Default Potions Lesson 1

Thank you Stefan

Art was sitting at his desk with Madame Curie in one hand. The other hand was giving her a good scratch. There was quite a strong smell of menthol surrounding Art, whose knees were playing up. He'd rubbed some cream onto them every morning since the beginning of term, but he was quite used to the smell. If you have a cold or a blocked nose, you might find your nasal passage and sinuses suddenly clear. On Art's table up the front are solid coloured containers full of the ingredients, all of Art's equipment already out and organised, as well as a vial of fluorescent yellow potion.

The door is wide open, and the room is nice and warm. On one wall, hooked over the pegs, are your lab coats. Some are still white, some are unfortunately pink (owing to Miffy). Come in, take a seat, and get ready.

SPOILER!!: OOC

  • Come on in!
  • The story behind some of the lab coats being PINK are thanks to the incident in the laundry. This happened IC about a month ago, and as the coats are used to protect your uniforms, they probably aren't washed too regularly. SOME of them were in the laundry and turned pink, others were ether washed before, after, or not yet after the incident. So feel free to grab a pink one if you want.
  • Please read over Art's guidelines
  • The ingredients are in solid containers, so you can't see what's inside them but you can come up and have a look at the potion and have a guess if you wish
  • Chat amongst yourselves! We will get started in approximately 22 hours. Opening a little early as I'm a bit unwell and might not be on when I originally planned on opening.
  • For those of you new to the RPG, WELCOME to Potions! IC we are in October, so this isn't our first lesson. We would have had about 2 each week since the beginning of term, so you'll already know Professor Newton and his rat Madame Curie.

SPOILER!!: Babbling Beverage

Babbling Beverage

Ingredients
  • 500ml Water
  • 5g Fresh Alihotsy leaves
  • 2 dried Billywig Stings
  • Pinch of powdered Erumpent tongue
  • 5ml Armadillo bile
  • 2 drops Leech Juice
  • 1 tablespoon Activated Charcoal
  • Pinch of ground Bezoar

Method
  • Clean equipment
  • Add water to cauldron, and bring to a simmer
  • Stew alihotsy leaves in simmering water for 20 minutes [prepare other ingredients whilst waiting]
  • Remove all traces of leaves, and return water to a boil
  • Add dried billywig stings and erumpent tongue, boil for 10 minutes, continuously stiring counter-clockwise
  • Allow to cool to room temperature (22 °C/72 °F)
  • Add armadillo bile, stir five (5) times counter-clockwise
  • Add leech juice, stir twenty (20) times counter-clockwise, and the potion should be light brown in colour
  • Bring back to a boil
  • Circle wand counter-clockwise over cauldron whilst saying the incantation ‘garrula lingua’ and bring down to a simmer
  • Add 1 levelled tablespoon of activated charcoal
  • Stir counter-clockwise three (3) times slowly
  • Add a pinch of ground bezoar
  • Stir once counter clockwise and remove from heat
  • As it cools, it will turn from a light brown colour to a fluorescent yellow
  • When the colour stops lightening, you may bottle your potion. It will be approximately ten serves, if stored in 20mL vials.
  • Label one vial for the Professor to analyse, and ingest another vial. Save the others for your own use, or dispose of.

Characteristics: Fluorescent, solid yellow
Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Information: Dose is 20ml. Smaller dose will limit effects, larger dose will have no extra effect due to the addition of activated charcoal and ground bezoar, which adds a protection to the drinker.

Class has officially started. Post late it you want, but you might get punished otherwise just pretend you've been here all along.

Oh, now this is very interesting.

Jace furiously jotted down notes in Japanese, and made additional notes as the professor spoke. He didn't mind getting the answer wrong, in fact, he was pleased with it because he got to learn more about the said ingredients. It made the Ravenclaw all the more excited to get on with Babbling Beverage.

As he finished jotting down notes, Jace's hand quickly shot up in the air and waved it around a bit to get the professor's attention. "Sensei, is the activated charcoal as universal as the bezoar? Can we add both ingredients to all possible potions to make it...safer to consume?" Because it's a breakthrough in the world of Potion-making, did he know?

As he waited for his question to be answered, Jace busied himself by collecting all the ingredients he needed.

Oh? Oooooooooooooooh.

Paige couldn't help but breath a sigh of relief when the truth was revealed. Controling the effects of the brew. THAT wasn't bad at all and now Paige could focus on preparing the potion without living in quiet terror of testing it with Maggie sitting right next to her and the consequences of that. Babbling nonsense - that was safe and may even be, dare she say it, a fun experience to share with the Slytherin. Or perhaps she was once again skipping down the yellow brick road of optimism.

Probably.

Before gathering her ingredients, the seventh year copied down what was on the board and added a few additional notes. Once satisfied, she headed to the supply cupboard and took out what she needed, returning to her station and carefully laiding everything out in the order of its use - double checking the recipe to make sure she was recalling things correctly.

Wand out, Paige cast a silent Scourgify on her cauldron after setting it on her burner - one of the few spells she COULD perform silently - and then stood to peer inside to administer an Aguamenti to fill it with the appropriate amount of water. Eyeing the line carved on the inside indicating 500 ml, the Hufflepuff cleared her thoat before uttering the incantation. "Aguamenti."

To her delight, her wand DID produce water...only the pressure in which she had done so was NOT the desired result. Conjuration was difficult, okay? Even if this particular spell was within her wheelhouse of charmswork as well.

Solid jet of water shooting forth, Paige was nearly knocked off her stool and cauldron nearly off her burner - although she managed to grip by the rim before it did that, which really only made matters worse as the water struck the bottom of the cauldron with enough momemtum to shoot right back in her face.........................

Genny did not listen attentively to the professor, instead she started scribbling lazily on her book.

SPOILER!!: Genny's Textbook

Babbling Beverage
'annoying talkies all day long'

  • 1 tablespoon Activated Charcoal 'good for drawing'
  • Pinch of ground Bezoar 'life savor'

It's special because:
  1. Shiny!
  2. Can't kill us because magic secret stuff added to it.

Once the professor ushered them to go on with their potion. She sat up straight and rubbed her hands excitedly. Time to get down to practical work! With her wand in hand, Genny started cleaning all the equipment sitting on her table. She messed up a few times and had to re-do the charm quickly before anyone noticed but all was good in about three minutes. She pushed her textbook to the side and looked at the second step she had to follow. "First, boil the water." She held up her wand and 'Aguamenti' into the cauldron...

... a tiny sprinkle started dropping from her wand. Drop drop drop drop...

Genny flopped down on her seat and waited for the insanely little sprinkle to fill the cauldron to the desires amount. Ugh. So embarrassing.

Even if Maggie was relieved about the fact that it was 'only' a simple Babbling Potion, she didn't show it. She was though. Especially considering who she was sitting too. Of course, there were worse people she could have been trying out potions with, but Paige was definitely NOT on her list of trustworthy partners regarding that.

ANYWAY, a simple Babbling Potion wasn't so bad.

Still simply ignoring Paige next to her, Maggie quickly made a list of the ingredients before taking that list with her to the supply cabinet. Making sure she didn't forget anything and all that. At least it seemed they didn't have to use anything TOO gross for this potion. Somehow after seven years of Potions class even Maggie had gotten used to using leeches and bile. It was just part of the job. Besides, gloves were a thing.

Once she'd gotten everything, Maggie returned to her workstation, laying out her ingredients in the correct order that she would have to use them. Okay. Cleaning everything wasn't too hard. She even did it nonverbally. Like, she was cool like that, you know. Now. Onto adding the wa-

So many notes to be taken! Thankfully Hady wasn't a slacker in this area and had started on taking notes the moment questions were asked and instructions appeared on the board. As she took down everything on the board she was also listening very closely to what professor Newton was explaining to them. This was all very good to know. If not enough of the potion was taken nothing would happen and if to much was taken they wouldn't get sick either. Thank you activated charcoal and bezoar!

Finishing off her notes she set the parchment aside but where she could see it and headed to the front of the room. Collecting only the ingredients she didn't have with her but needed Hady then made her way back to her desk. Setting everything out neatly first she then pulled out her wand and once more made sure everything was cleaned. Once it was she cast a soft, "aguamenti" directed into the measuring cup filling it to the 500ml mark before cancelling the charm.

Pouring the water from the measuring cup into her cauldron she then set the cup aside. Aiming her wand beneath the cauldron she cast "Incendio" to get the flame started keeping an eye on it until the water inside the cauldron began to simmer lightly. Once that was happening Hady measured out the 5g of fresh alihotsy leaves adding it into the simmer water. Now she just had to wait twenty minutes for the leaves to stew.

SPOILER!!: Hady's Notes!

Getting her wand under control, Paige finally honed her magic well enough to create a steady stream of water into her cauldron and quickly filled it up to the appropriate level all the while bowing her head and offering meek apologies to everyone who happened to have suffered from her lack of focus and confidence.

.........................................including Maggie.

She was just about to offer a personal and sincere apology to her......when she went and said THAT. Normally, Paige Skeeter would have just rolled over, accepted defeat, and gone about her business. But apparently this was just not one of those instances.

"And just what, pray tell, is THAT supposed to mean," she huffed at the Slytherin, pointing her wand at her burner and setting it ablaze with no awkward side effects this time. "It's just a little water and will dry soon enough with everyone's burners being on. I didn't do it on purpose."

Water, and other things, at a simmer, Paige placed the alihosty leaves in her cauldron so that none were overlapping each other and floating neatly on the surface before noting the time.

Oh. So she wasn't right. But that was okay. It was what they came to lessons for. But listening to the Professor, Hattie decided she wasn't exactly wrong either. It just wasn't the answer he was looking for. Hattie smiled though. "I would really like to help you find out if it's right..." She nodded. But they were getting to brew now. So she quickly forgot about her questions, and turned her attention to brewing. She loved this part of potions! First of all she wrote down on her notes, so that she knew how to follow.

As it cools, it will turn from a light brown colour to a fluorescent yellow
When the colour stops lightening, you may bottle your potion. It will be approximately ten serves, if stored in 20mL vials.
Label one vial for the Professor to analyse, and ingest another vial. Save the others for your own use, or dispose of.

And now she could begin. Standing up, she took her parchment and went and collected all of her ingredients. She was careful, and made sure that she could them all. She didn't want to mess her potion up just because she couldn't read. That would be silly. Carefully she headed back to her bench. She placed all the ingredients onto the bench, and arranged them in the order that she needed them. "Perfect" She murmured with a smile.

She re-read her instructions, before beginning to clean her equipment. She wiped down her knife, and the stirrer. All nice clean. And now onto her cauldron. Pointing her wand she said "Scourgify." She'd had a lot of practice at this spell, and she knew she could do it. And now the cauldron was nice and clean.

Now to begin. Carefully she picked up her measuring jug, and said "aguamenti" and filled the jug up, to the correct level. Placing her wand down, she carefully poured the water into her cauldron. Smiling, she pointed her wand underneath her cauldron, and lit a small flame.

Hattie then peered into the cauldron, and waited for her potion to start simmering.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

After guessing the potion wrong before the lesson started, Mason let out a small sigh as he had been sure it was Felix Felicis and went to sit near the front where an empty space was left. When class started, the Ravenclaw placed his notebook on his desk and got his quill at the ready as the first question came.

What was this potion. Seeing as he had already guessed wrong, the fifth year decided to stay quiet and listen to what the other students would guess. Of course some like him had been wrong and he actually felt good about that. But some had it right and the teenager had to flip his pages to see where the babbling potion was in the book.

Looking up from his book , he saw that the ingredients and instructions had been revealed on the board and he decided to copy them down in his notebook first. He was sure that in a moment, the blackboard would be hard to read with all the smoke soon. So after writing down the instructions and double checking that he got them right, the Ravenclaw grabbed his cauldron and with a wave of his wand he cleaned it with a “Scourgify” then he pointed his wand inside the cauldron and filled it with water using Aguementi and made it simmer for a moment.

Leaning over his textbook, he checked the next step and searched for his scale which stood next to him. He cleaned it first and then weighted the alihotsy leaves until he got the right measure and added it to the simmering water to stew for twenty minutes. Speaking of which, he quickly set his alarm clock on his watch so that he would not forget the time.

Default Professor and mentions of Paige and Maggie..
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

"I don't mind trying it out Professor." She shrugged not minding to test it out, it wasn't like it was a potion that would really harm her. If he wanted her to experiment she could later on or here today. Save some without the extra ingredients? Could be an interesting turn of events.

Speaking of interesting turn...

Nat went to get her ingredients and as she was on her way back she couldn't help but hear certain words come from a certain table. Her brown eyes jumped towards Maddie and she couldn't help but giggle. It was just water, really? "Don't mind her Paige she gets her robes in a knot anytime there is liquid falling near her." Giving a smirk towards Paige she turned back to her table. Her eyes glanced at Maggie's lap buddy when she turned towards her work station again.

Now on to her own potion. Looking at the work and the ingredients Nat sat them all aside and grabbed her cauldron. Pointing her wand she cleaned the cauldron to make sure it was good and ready. Potions was one of her more average subjects. She wasn't great at it, but she wasn't horrible either. Once her cauldron was clean she pointed her wand, "Aguamenti" Filling her cauldron with 500 ml, "Finite" Her eyes moved back to steps she was to complete.

Pointing her wand once more, "Incendio". She watched as the flames started under her cauldron.

It didn't take long for the water to simmer up and that made Hattie happy. She hated waiting around. She really was not a patient person at all. Looking back over at her notes, Hattie ticked the first instruction, before moving onto the next one. Carefully she added her alihotsy leaves into the potion. Now to stew them for 30 minutes. She left the heat as it was, as her potion was simmering away quite nicely.

Hattie had learnt from last year, and had made sure she'd brought a timer with her. She carefully set it to twenty minutes, and place it on her desk. There would be no losing track of time this year! She was determined to improve her time keeping in relation to making her potions. Whilst her potion was simmering and brewing, she used the time to prepare her other ingredients, making sure that they were all ready to be used. This would be useful, because then she wouldn't need to prepare them when she was doing the rest of the brewing

Before she knew it her time was dinging! It had been twenty minutes already. "Wow... time goes fast" Hattie murmured, as she looked at the next instruction. Carefully Hattie took all the leaves from her potion, and used her wand to turn the heat up, so that the potion went back up to a boil. She peered inside again, watching as the potion bubble away. It looked pretty cool. She was happy with it so far.

Following the instructions, she carefully added the billywig stings and erumpent tongue to her potion, and then set the timer again, this time for 10 minutes. Placing it on the desk, she picked up her stirrer and began stirring counter-clockwise. She really needed to learn how to get the stirrer to this by itself, because she was about to get a achy arm.

Hopefully this 10 minutes would go fast.

Ah, time for work! The first year Slytherin smiled widely, she liked this lesson but to be honest, she wasn’t exactly good at it, not yet anyway! It was just a matter of time, she was sure of it! So when it was time for the class to get started to opened her textbook at the right page for extra information beside the one written on the blackboard and started to prepare her work.

Looking concentrated she started to clean everything what needed to be cleaned before filling the kettle with 500ml water she looked intently at the instructions so that she wasn’t going to make a fault, she didn’t wanted to make faults because she WANTED to be good in the lessons she liked. She needed to prove herself because she was a muggle born and she wanted to show everybody that she was better than anyone else and that it didn’t mattered who her parents were, not that much people knew about it…

Using a spell to create fire so that the water in the kettle would start to heat she smiled, nothing was more fun than to be allowed to make fire without consequences! She made the fire at first a little too hot, just because she could but then she remembered where she was and her grin disappeared, she couldn't play with the fire now, she needed to work! With a sigh she lowered the fire to a normal before starting to work again.

Ah, the water had started to boil, that was good and not that difficult! But, she knew from her own previous experiences that this was only the easiest part and that it would get hard really soon! “Oh no, what are the alihotsy leaves?!” She muttered to herself, worried and irritated by herself because she already had made a mess of things by not labeling her ingredients while taking them to her working space. Sighing she quickly searched in her textbook for some help, refusing to call for the professor already this soon after the start of the lesson and she found the right leaves and added them to the cauldron while following the right instructions.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

While the potion was simmering, Mason used this time to prepare the other ingredients by putting them in order in front of him. This way he wouldn’t make a mistake and put in the wrong ingredient in the cauldron. It had happened at Durmstrang once, only once, and he had gotten extra homework and had to write a whole essay about the dangers of potion making. It had been insightful when he had looked up the information but he still did not want that to happen again.

Checking the ingredients one by one, the Ravenclaw then checked his watch and noticed that he still had some time left. He took this time to look at the classroom itself. He might have spaced out a bit because when his alarm went off he jumped a little in his seat.

Checking his notes, he read what he had to do with the leaves and removed the alihotsy leaves from the cauldron after putting on his gloves and before returning the water to a boil. He waited a couple of seconds before the potion inside was bubbling up. Next up were two? He checked his notes again, yes two dried billywig stings which were added to the cauldron and the pinch of powdered erumpent tongue as well. Who ever had caught this deserved a medal. He added this in too and began to boil them for ten minutes. Setting his alarm yet again, Mason then took a stirrer and stirred counter-clockwise.

Water, and other things, at a simmer, Paige placed the alihosty leaves in her cauldron so that none were overlapping each other and floating neatly on the surface before noting the time.

Excuse YOU?!?!?!

Since when was Paige talking back to her? Not sending in her so-called friends to fight her battles. When had that happened? Really? Not that she was particularly intimidating or anything. It was still...well, Paige. Paige, who would probably apologized if Maggie hexed her right now. Paige. Paige, who had just drenched her in water. And why on EARTH was Nat talking to them?

"Professor?!" Maggie said, her voice shaking slightly as she turned to face Professor Newton, a pout on her lips. "They're-" She vaguely gestured towards first Nat then Paige. "She did it on purpose." At this she looked down at her coat and uniform. Which was still DRENCHED. As was her hair. "Look at this." She bit her lip, tugging on a strand of very sad looking WET hair before looking down at her shoes.

Like, it was obvious she couldn't STAY like this. It was a DISASTER.

Waiting 20 minutes was boring, even when busy with preparing a few other things she needed to do because no matter what, 20 minutes were long and she needed to wait with some things. "Stay inside my pocket Flam, it's dangerous for you so close by the kettle" spoke Leesha with a firm voice toward her rat and she pushed the small animal deeper in the fabric of her school robes to protect her pet. Looking at her watch she saw that it was time for the next step so she started to remove the leaves out of her potion, something she didn't liked to do because the damp coming from the potion was hot. But she managed to do so without burning herself and she waited until the water started to boil again. Okay, up until now she didn't had done that much wrong so she had made a good start. "What shall I do next...?" she muttered softly while looking again at the instructions and she frowned. Dried billywig stings and erumpent tongue? bah, she didn't wanted to touch those things but she had no choice then to grab them and add them to the potion but she didn't liked it. Those ingredients were really not her favorite to touch.

Looking again at her watch to see the time she waited again 10 minutes and she made use of the time to again prepare a few more things now that she was what further with brewing her potion. Ah! It was time! Looking up at the instructions again she started to stir the potion but, unknowingly that she was doing it wrong, she stirred in the wrong direction and she continued with the potion, unaware of her mistake.

Reading the next step she let the potion be and waited until it had cooled down enough to start with the next step, convinced that she was going to make a perfect potion for the first time during her first year! Now she added armadillo bile and stirred exactly 5 times counter-clockwise, counting out loud to make sure that she was doing it right and then she looked down at the notes again.

Here is where text should be

Nat had already been busy working when she heard Maggie call the Professor. She didn't pay much attention until she heard this on purpose.... She couldn't help it, but the loudest snort laugh came out of her that she had ever done. "Are you kidding me?" She turned to look at Paige and Maggie. "Did who do what on purpose? Paige would never hurt a fly let alone spilled water on someone." She looked at the professor and then back at Maggie and back to the professor.

"You seriously don't believe her that Paige would ever do that on purpose." Though Paige should be awarded like fifty points for getting her wet. "Don't worry Maggie you aren't made of sugar so you won't melt."

Seriously was she a puppy afraid of a bath? It was just water!

So it WAS the Babbling Beverage and the activated charcoal along with the ground bezoar made sure no one could over done on it. Well that made perfect sense.

Az smiled up at the Professor as he said that they could get to it and she carefully grabbed the proper amount of all the ingredients that she needed and headed back to her table. She got out her cauldron, measuring spoons and cups, stirrers, knives along with a mortar and pestle and lined them all up..

"Scourgify." She said as she waved her wand in the appropriate S pattern over all of her equipment. Once she was sure they were nice and clean, she put her cauldorn on the burner and then said "Incendio." to light it.

There.

Next she carefully measured out exactly 500ml of water and added it to her cauldron.

As she waited for the water to simmer she arranged her other ingredients and got out her scale as well.

She peeked into the cauldron and smiled as she saw the water simmering. Perfect! The Ravenclaw carefully measured out 5 grams of alihotsy leaves and then put them into the cauldron, careful to keep it simmering. After adding ingredients the water had a tendency to cool just a bit.. so she up the little clicker just the tiniest of bits.. There..

Perfect! She set her timer to 20 minutes and started to prepare her other ingredients.. Placing them carefully on her table in the order she would use them. She was in her own little world, only paying attention to her potion and what she was doing, that she didn't notice the ruckus going on in the rest of the class.

Time to get things moving. Taking out her wand she cleaned all her tools and equipment "Scourgify" she said while everything was cleaned instantly. Echo added water do her cauldron by saying "Aguamenti" when she had enough water she ended the spell and then pointed to the cauldron with her wand and said "Incendio" to get the fire going under so the water could boil.

Making sure she didnt bring the water to a full boil because the instructions stated a simmer. so leaning on her elbows she watched the water..oh right she needed to prepair her other ingredients, taking her eyes off the water she noticed it was at a simmer now. phew.. perfect timing. Echo added the Alihotsy leaves and finished getting all the rest of the ingredients done and ready... 20 mintues to wait seemed like a long time to her.

the 20 minutes was over and she removed the leaves carefully and now let the heat boil the water.

Art walked over to Mr Reed as he asked his question, leaving his Alihotsy leaves stewing for the 20 minutes. "W-well uhh... it-it takes time to alter a potion. This one, in particular, took a lot of trial and error, and it wasn't until I added the little incantation of 'garrula lingua' AND with the counter-clockwise wand movement that it worked as I planned. In theory... yes, I'd say so. It just takes a lot of time." And his ONLY reason for doing so was to make sure his own children didn't try taking too much, and have any issues. "If you ever feel curious and wish to try it sometime, I'd love to help you," he added. Another little test to experiment on.

There was always a shower at least once a year in Potions class, and this year was no exception. Except the yelling between girls. Art made his way over there, not hearing the words being said. "What's going on?" he asked, just as Miss Traulton started telling him. From what he could gather, Miss Skeeter's wand simply... was over excited and showered on both Miss Skeeter and Miss Traulton. And... Miss Traulton was not happy about it, and now Miss Franks-Mundie was there too. Art looked between the three girls. Art DID look at what Miss Traulton was showing him. She had been in the way of the water and was wet. "Oh Miss Traulton, it's j-just water. D-do you want to sit up front with me where it's dry?" he asked. He wasn't... entirely sure what else he could do. "T-take the coat off and we can hang it out to dry, and I'll get you a spare one to wear," because it was nice and warm in here, it would dry quickly. He gave a little smile to the girls, trying to show them that he wasn't mad that there was water everywhere, or that some of them had been wet. He didn't realise THAT was not what the girls were worried about, of course, but the older man was never good at picking up these things.

Miss Paton got a grin from the Potions Master. "Excellent Miss Paton! Well if.. whenever you have some free time, you can meet me in the spare lab if you'd like." He was curious to see what happened in their experiment of course. Miss Franks-Mundie was also interested in trying out her little hypothesis too, which Art gave a warm smile to in return. "Excellent!" he said.

In the twenty minute block he had, he walked to make sure everyone was okay. He noticed Miss Tate's little dripping coming from her wand and went up to her. "Miss Tate, try repeating the incantation with a little more... more... uhh oomph. Not too much, or you'll turn the classroom into a pool," he said with a chuckle.

Miss Lynch was getting on with things as per usual, and Art walked past with a smile not wanting to disturb her. As was Mr Winslow, and Art paused for the briefest moment to observe his working. He could see the determination and concentration, which was a great skill of a Potioneer. He smiled at the young man and walked off. Walkking up to Miss Griffel, as she appeared to be speaking with her own Rat, Art chuckled slightly. "Flam wanting to observe things?" Art asked the young Slytherin. "Madame Curie is much the same. I can put Flam up the front with Madame Curie if you want?" he asked. Next he paused at Miss Snow's area, always enjoying her method of potion making. "Good work Miss Snow," he said quietly. On his way back to his desk, he paused over Miss Duchanne's work, giving her a smile, and a "Good job," and returned to his desk.

His ingredients were already prepared, so he strained out all traces of the Alihotsy leaves, and tampered with the bunsen burner to get it to a hotter flame. Within a minute, the rapid bubbles were breaking the surface. He added the two dried billywig stings, and the pinch of powdered erumpent tongue. He pulled out his wooden stirrer, put it into the cauldron, set his timer for 10 minutes, and stirred counter-clockwise.

Default post 1 and QUESTION FOR PROFESSOR o.O
YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers

Skylar was moderately okay when it came to potions, just as long as she wasn't asked to tell the theory behind why she was doing something. But in Sky's mind, Potion brewing was similar to cooking and she always watched in awe of her mum or anyone else cooking.

First things first, bring all the ingredients to the bench and make sure had everything. She glanced over next to her at Hattie who was already well underway with her potion. How on Earth did her friend get started so quickly? Oh nevermind, she shouldn't race because that was when one lost focused and messed up and maybe forgot to add something.

First things first was to clean her cauldron and equipment she would be using, which the second year did without too much trouble unlike that older Hufflepuff over there who sprayed water everywhere. But who was she to judge? Even though she'd mastered the water spell and the cleaning spell, there was still plenty of spells she struggled with, so the girl got a sympathetic smile, but nothing too much because well, Sky didn't want to embarrass her anymore than she already was.

Now onto filling her cauldron with water. And adding 5 grams of fresh alihotsy leaves, which she'd premeasured. Time to let simmer while she prepared other ingredients? Uh, what exactly did she have to prepare? Everything seemed ready to go. Oh, use her mortar and pestle to ground the Erumpent tongue into a fine powder.

Keeping a careful eye on her cauldron, she placed a bit of the Erumpent tongue in her mortar and began to ground it up as she read further down the protocol for what else she had to do. That was when she had a question about how much of something. While carefully still grounding, she raised her hand to signal for the professor. "Hi uh ... Professor Newton? I'm just curious about something. The protocol asks for a pinch of Erumpent tongue and then a pinch of ground Bezoar, but um my pinch size might be different from like someone with larger hands and well, does this matter? Or should I use two pinches to compensate?" You know, cause it was kind of important on how much of something to add.

As they were released to begin brewing, Brooklyn had nearly tuned out everything else. Potions took focus after all, so accidents didn’t happen. Accidents like, apparently, Paige’s loss of control of her aguamenti spell and splashing Maggie, which honestly amused the redhead a little. It didn’t surprise her one bit that Maggie was blowing it out of proportion, either, but she didn’t comment. Instead, she simply went up to gather the ingredients she was going to need before returning to her workstation. She didn’t need to comment, nor did she need to concern herself with Professor Newton’s method of dealing with the blonde.

Sitting back down, she took her wand out and carefully Scourgified her cauldron and the tools she would need for the potion. Once that was done, she Scourgified her cauldron again for good measure before she pointed her wand inside. “Aguamenti,” she cast, focusing the jet of water inside the cauldron until she had enough gathered inside. By now she figured she knew what 500 milliliters looked like. Ending the charm, she turned her attention below the cauldron and cast a quick Incendio to light the flame underneath. Boiling wasn’t required, so she kept the flame rather low and waited until the water was simmering. Once that was done, she added the alihotsy leaves to simmer while she pre-measured out the other ingredients. It kept her from thinking about waiting for the twenty minutes required, yet that didn’t mean it took the entire time to prepare.

Once twenty minutes had passed, she carefully removed the leaves from the water before she adjusted the flame so she could bring the resulting liquid to a boil. Continually checking on it, she gently added the billywig stings and the pinch of erumpent tongue once the potion was boiling. Checking the time, she slipped a clean stirrer into the cauldron and began stirring counterclockwise. Every few minutes, she switched hands to prevent herself from getting tired, but the ten minutes seemed to go by quickly either way. Thankfully. Once that was done, she removed the stirrer, Scourgifying it again before laying it on her station, then used her wand to lower the flame so the potion could cool.

Art made his way over to Miss Diggory to listen to her question. He nodded, went back to his desk, and came back with a measure spoon and a little bowl of powdered bezoar, something he had a great deal of. "Well a very good question, a pinch is about an eighth of a teaspoon," he showed her the teaspoon measure. He scooped up an eighth of a teaspoon and showed her, then put it back. With his thumb and forefinger, he grabbed a little of the powdered bezoar and sprinkled it into the measuring cup, showing her that it was an eighth of a spoon. Mostly. "Just have a practice with this if you want, or you can just measure it out with the spoon."

Art walked past Miss Andrew's desk, trying not to appear to be stopping. She was another one on his radar, one he sometimes liked to watch brewing. Her methodology with brewing potions was faultless. He didn't speak, not wishing to disrupt her concentration, and moved on.

Daxton Prince. Tak allowed the name roll around his mouth before letting it slip off his tongue quietly. Daxton Prince.

He could feel the pain as his nails dug into the centre of his hand, hear the professor go on about the potion that they were going to make, but none of it mattered.

He only thing that mattered was how much the other boy would pay.

Finally, tearing his eyes away from el Diablo himself, Tak turned to Liv. "Water...is the first thing right?"

Default Professor >_<

Looking up from her work when she heard the professor talking she was surprised, she didn’t had heard him coming! Her eyes quickly darted down toward her pocket where Vlam still moved restlessly and she nodded while pulling her rat out of his hiding place. “Yes, I think that he will like that” spoke Leesha happily because that way her rat would have some time to play while she was working on her potion. But before she handled her rat over to the professor she looked stern at the small animal. “Don’t bite in his fingers or there will be no cheese for you tonight” she warned, knowing how her rat could misbehave if he wanted to. Vlam looked in a lot ways like Leesha and she knew it so she was very carefully with her warning. “Thank you professor” she spoke while she handled her rat over to the teacher, watching closely if her rat really wasn’t going to bite, just because he could.

Looking back at her potion a few minutes later she started to work again while becoming more and more convinced that this potion actually was going to be a good one! Up until now she didn’t had made any major mistakes so that was good, really good! Adding leech juice to the potion she quickly stirred the way she was supposed to, one, two… five… nineteen… twenty times counter-clockwise. While she was stirring the potion she looked intently at her potion and she started to frown, was the potion supposed to have this color? The potion seemed to be slightly brown but it was more orange than brown to be honest and she wasn’t sure if that was a good thing. It was slightly brown but… Not completely brown!

While waiting for the potion to start bowling again she shook her head, wanting to know if she still was doing the right thing and she raised her hand to get the professor’s attention. “Professor, is the potion having the right color right now? It’s a little brown but orange too” she spoke worriedly.

It got really boring watching those drops if it weren't for the drama with the older girls. Genny watched absently before she realized that Paige was basically being attacked by the Slytherin blonde. She made a silent gasp and righted her sitting position ready to defend her friend before another girl (Nat) did that for her. GOOD. Now the third year could observe and make a move if Paige needed help or saving.

That was completely ruled out when the professor set things to their right terms and... oh he was coming her way now!

"Uhm, okay, professor. I am very good at charms usually but I haven't been practicing conjuration spells at home because dad said they're too risky. So, I still need working on those." There was her life story. Ahem. Now Genny kept trying the incantation over and over again until she finally had her cauldron full and a small flame lit underneath it to heat. Once the small bubbles appeared, she dropped in the leaves to be ready in 20 minutes. Instead of waiting for them to brew(where was the fun in that), she spotted Brooklyn working silently and alone as usual a few tables ahead.

"Hi." She stood in front of the older girl's table, smiling. "So, how's the potion going with you?" It was impossible for a beginner to spot anyone's progress in potions. Also this was just an ice-breaker.

Harvey was a bit worried to be left to make his own potion. Again. As he'd suspected, this class wasn't his strong suit. Even though he really wanted it to be! It jus required... care. Patience.

He'd take books any day.

Right, ingredients. That was the easy part. He could get all that easily.

1. Clean equipment.

Well, that was fine, too - he always kept his stuff clean (no knowing what kind of smells might develop if he didn't)

2. Add water to cauldron, and bring to a simmer.

He could do that. Simmering was fine. Totally fine. It was all under control.

As he waited, Harvey flipped through his textbook. The potions in there had some fascinating names, like...

It was boiling! Like, bubbles popping like crazy kind of boiling!

But boiling was almost the same as simmering, right? The water was hot. That's what mattered, right?

It was close enough, Harvey decided, opening his book on the right page again and lowering the heat under his cauldron to eliminate the jumpy boiling bubbles somewhat.

3. Stew alihotsy leaves in simmering water for 20 minutes [prepare other ingredients whilst waiting]

Harvey glanced at his watch as he threw in the alihotsy leaves again. Great, 20 minutes free! As long as he didn't forget what time he put the leaves in.

Looking around the class, he wondered why everyone seemed so busy. If they all had 20 minutes to wait...

Glancing at the instructions again, Harvey almost groaned. He was so good at skim-reading he could barely make himself read carefully these days anymore. And he'd totally missed that last part. Ugh.

Reading down the list of ingredients, he began preparing everything else as he waited, trying to keep the dejectedness out of his movements and wondering if the new book he'd asked his parents to send over would arrive with the post the next day.
