Default Office of Professor Hirsch

If offices were meant to show the essence of someone's personality than boy oh boy, did this room show what Roderik Hirsch was like. Everything was sleek, from the orange tables to the seats and even to the teal coloured desks. There was a certain gleam to everything, as if it had been well polished in advance.

Upon entering the room, the first thing you see is the desk sitting towards the middle of the room. Sitting upon the desk are a number of things: pieces of parchment, quills, ink, your everyday mundane wizarding equipment. What wasn't mundane was the picture of the Hirscch family gathered together at their most recent holiday, where everyone had been forced to wear ugly jumpers. (Thanks Ma)

The one thing the office seems to be in abundance of are chest of drawers. They seem to be everywhere from along a side of a wall to behind the desk and underneath the desk itself. There are also a few Defence books stacked up along the shelves on the left side of the room. Ask nicely, and you might get to borrow some. Might.

Hirsch himself can usually be found sitting behind the desk with his feet propped up onto the desk and shuffling through some piece of parchment or another.

Please make sure you've posted in the Seating Area first and have been told that you can enter, either by Hirsch or by me.

Like now, for example.

Sure, he was still in his office, so to speak, but he was just strapping on some boxing gloves when the knock came and made him pause. His eyes found the door and he stood there for a moment, almost as if he was trying to look beyond the door itself and at the person knocking - rather heavy knocks they were, too - on the other side. Could this wait......?

"Come in!" he called, almost before he could help himself. What if it was about something important?

OOC: NAME TWIN! Kind of You can go ahead and post in the office thread now ^^

Well this was a bit of a pickle.

Zeke wasn't going to lie, he had hoped the door would be opened for him. Hirsch? Help a brother out?

Unfortunately for him, Hirsch's voice indicated that it wouldn't be the case and that he'd have to gain his own entrance - though the temptation to keep knocking was strong. Freeing up a couple of fingers, Zeke fit the door knob into his palm and used whatever traction he could get to swing the door away from him. It wasn't a smooth effort, but it worked and the bacon was still in his buns! #winning

"Food for your thoughts, Sir?" he asked tentatively as he closed the door behind him. Only after that did he realise that Hirsch wasn't exactly dressed for breakfast. "Or should I come back another time?"

For Daxton to do that, he had to write - which got extremely tedious, extremely fast - or the other person had to know how to sign.

Instead, Daxton's remarks and sarcastic comments were kept to himself, perhaps inadvertently protecting him from an outburst that might result in serious trouble. If Daxton could speak as freely as he sometimes wanted to, his words would certainly get him into no small amount of bother.

Needless to say, he completely ignored the remark about having someone to talk to. Aside from not wanting to share anything, he did not need anyone's help.

But the matter of fighting, well... that was worth his attention. Daxton found the matter quite amusing, though his amusement could not quite translate to his expression, other than through a slight glint in his eye. He had managed to get away with a fair few misdemeanours, hadn't he? Daxton had been wondering how long it would take for them to notice.

Resorting back to the notebook again - because he had no other option in this situation - Daxton provided Hirsch with his explanation, writing the answer much faster than before, but just as neat as ever. He held it up again.

'I like to fight.'

Well, that was the simplified answer - and very simplified it was, too. The one that was least likely to reveal too much about Daxton; he was always very careful in what he agreed, always keeping valuable information to himself, revealing what was necessary whenever it would benefit him most. Daxton knew how to play this game.

It wasn't probably a good thing that Daxton was keeping any sarcastic answers to himself because, yes, that really would've gotten him into a lot of trouble, even if he was talking to a man who secretly loved sassy answers. Just ask Dante Barrington.

Right now, Hirsch was starting to feel quite a bit frustrated. He kept glancing down at Daxton and the notebook on his lap, as if he was searching for the first sign which told him that he was going to get an answer. But no. Nothing. Instead, the boy just looking at him, as if the words had gone through one ear and out the other. It was starting to feel too much like he was talking to a brick wall and the man didn't like that.

So, he took a raised his eyebrows at the boy and decided to continue onwards, hoping that he was actually listening along. "If you have any student you're close to, try and talk to them about any issues you may be having. You might find that it helps you more than not." A good friend, mind you. [B]"If not, consider the therapy. Only any life-threatening issues will get back to me so everything is confidential."[/B

What was that? An answer? Finally. At least it told him that he wasn't just talking to himself here. And what was more, this answer was probably the most useful answer he had gotten so far. It told him everything he needed to know about the Ravenclaw's reflex technique, something that was very important in terms of defence.

He liked to fight? Huh.

"I have some punching bags in the Training Area if you wanted to vent out your feelings by fighting. Or the dummies, even." They could be replaced but human beings? Not so much. "But I can't let this behaviour continue. You need to find a good outlet for your fighting instinct and not let it out on other people. As stupid and unrealistic as this sounds, Hogwarts is meant to be a safe place and while there are times when it's not," Something he wasn't really pleased about. "You picking fights isn't helping. Do that in the real world and you might find yourself facing someone you'll regret crossing and then you'll be in much deeper trouble than you are right now."

Pause.

"Consider this your very last warning. I do not want to hear that you've gotten into another fight or have done much worse otherwise the consequences will be severe." He fixed Daxton with a look to show that he wasn't joking either. "Take these few weeks to take a breather, if you need to. And try to put in some more effort into your schoolwork." Who knows, it could give him the distraction he needs.

"If you don't want to discuss anything else, you may go."

It wasn't the question that made him look up - though it did help - it was the smell. Bacon. Even though he wasn't exactly hungry, the smell was enough to get him salivating. Sausages were his go-to breakfast option but bacon wasn't a bad choice either. Maybe a breakfast roll wouldn't be a bad idea. One with extra sausages on the side to suit his appetite.

...........

What were they talking about again?

Right. Food. Thoughts. Zeke was here.

The man wasn't meant to have favourites and he tried his hardest not to let it show but Zeke was most definitely one of his. "No, no, you're fine," he said, moving to take off his boxing gloves, "This," The one boxing glove he'd managed to take off was currently being waved a bit. "Can surely wait."

When both of them were off, he set them down on his table and moved to sit down, gesturing for Zeke to do the same. Sit and enjoy that breakfast roll, kid nearly-an-adult. "So why have you come here making me hungry?" he asked, giving the Gryffindor a playful smile, "And what's in that bun apart from bacon?"

The more Hirsch spoke, the more tempted Daxton was to throw the notebook right at his stupid, attractive head. He just would not let the matter drop, would he? All this 'therapy' rubbish - even the word put Daxton on guard - and talking things through with people. He had done that, hadn't he? Sort of. Not really. But Char knew plenty about him, and Daxton had not exactly done a lot of opening up there. She tended to guess, and guess correctly, and that was as close to any of that as he was ever willing to go.

Really, if Hirsch thought that taking aggression out on one of the practice dummies was any substitute for a real fight, he was sorely mistaken. Daxton thought back to one of his first Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons with Hirsch, wherein he had done just that, and practically beaten the innards out of the dummies they had been fighting sans magic. All it had done was rile him up, draw the anger and the aggression to the surface, and left him to find a better way to deal with it after the class had ended.

It would have been hard not to laugh at Hirsch's comment about the 'real world', had Daxton not been so invariably impassive in his outward expressions. There was an implication there that he had never experienced the 'real world', or its consequences, which was just so... funny.

'Very last warning', 'consequences will be severe', yes, yes, Daxton did not doubt any of that. What he lacked was the ability to care about it.

No, nothing more he wanted to discuss. He had been very slightly tempted to bring up the topic of Legilimency, trying again with a different professor than last time, but ultimately, Daxton was still unwilling to ask for any sort of help. He considered the meeting done, and was quite ready to leave this appallingly decorated office. Without a single word - written or spoken - he got to his feet and walked straight back through the door. Perhaps he still had some time to find some of his regular customers to sell some sweets to before everyone disappeared off to their common rooms.

It was moments like these that cemented his respect for Professor Hirsch. Other Professor's might have hushed him off, told him to make an appointment, whatever, but no... not Hirsch. The man was dependable. He followed through. "You're a lifesaver, thanks." Really, THANKS. Especially because he might not have extended the same courtesy to some people should they have tried intruding on his own boxing sessions. Some would say he took his training too seriously, they were probably right.

ANYYYWWAAAAYYYY....

Food, and things.

Completely at ease in Hirsch's office, Zeke made himself comfortable in front of Hirsch's desk, reaching over to hand the man his bun. He grinned, "Just, wanted to ask you some things... I dunno, for perspective I guess?" Something like that. Regarding Hirsch's follow-up question though, "Bacon, egg, spinach, tomato relish." AKA The Best Breakfest Bun EVER. "I don't know what the elves put in the relish, but it's amazing." Seriously.

So yes, the quill could stay. He was just going to ignore it.

If he was completely honest with himself, he half-expected the Gryffindor to give him a sassy answer in return. An answer that was reminiscent of the lesson they had just had. So, when the fourth year actually spoke, Hirsch was actually pleasantly surprised with the answer. Though, he hardly thought it was a joke in any sense but this was a better answer than he had expected so he was going to brush the joke part aside.

"Exactly," he said, nodding his head slightly, "Not only were you talking while I was teaching, which is disrespectful I'll have you know, but you insulted a guest and mocked an apology instead of saying a simple 'I'm sorry'. Which then fuelled another argument and upset quite a few people." Pause. "I don't care what the history behind that mockery was and it doesn't bother me that you dislike the Toussaints but there's a time and a place and a lesson isn't one of them. In these situations, you need to learn to swallow your pride and hold your tongue." Understood?

Deep breaths.

"I...... am going to have to impose some kind of consequence because of this."
Sweet Circe, swallow his pride and hold his tongue? Oh Merlin, that sounded painful and horrible and every other awful word his quill could probably come up with. Did people actually do that? Was it a real thing? Blaise blinked at the man, his scepticism evident. He wouldn't be openly protesting but....very very very concerned Gryffindor sitting right here.

"Right, of course, yes. Swallowing my pride." It wasn't a coincidence that Gryffindors were lions and resided in a pride Professor. This was no easy task to ask of the Fourth Year. Blaise wasn't entirely sure he was even capable of such feats.

"And I understand there'll be consequences." As he usually did. The thing was to calculate the risks. Did they outweigh the benefits? Well, in this case, it would all depend on the next few seconds. "I'm fully prepared to accept those consequences and in fact am willing to give a few suggestions if you'll take them."

See? He was willing to meet the Professor half way with this. No stubborn tantrums or insistence that he did nothing wrong--although did he? Did he really? It was meant to be funnier than anything else. It was hard to miss when he made an actual attempt at being malicious but yeah, meeting halfway and all that noble stuff. He was ready.

Hirsch was used to the silence of this boy. He'd been teaching him for three years and this was the very first time he'd read anything the boy had written. But this silence? This left quite a bad aftertaste and he didn't like it one bit.

So, he watched Daxton leave before resting his elbows on his desk and his face in his hands. With every bit of luck, the 'last warning' part would end up working for the boy because if not...... he didn't even want to think about those consequences.

A lifesaver? As great of a compliment as that was, Hirsch doubted it. All he'd said was the truth: boxing could wait for later because this was currently more important, even if Zeke was only here to have a chat. "You're very sweet, thank you."

And there was no such thing as taking your training too seriously.

The sight of Zeke making himself comfortable amused the man but he said nothing of it. It was just a sign as to how many times the Gryffindor had been here. The handing over of the bun confused him slightly but he took it and looked under the main bun portion. Curiosity, you know. But not as curious as the statement made him. "Perspective?" he asked, looking back up at the boy, "Perspective about what?"

Bacon, egg, spinach and tomato relish. The words were enough to get his tummy rumbling slightly. "Those house elves really do know how to make their meals." He'd need to make a mental note of this combination when the holidays rolled around. "Do you mind if I......?" His voice trailed off as he nodded down at the bun in his hands.

The look of scepticism wasn't overlooked by the Defence Professor. In fact, it was one that amused him, given the type of boy he was talking to. Blaise clearly fitted into his house and this might have been asking for too much but it was true: there was a time and a place for these things and a classroom was not one of them. Especially a classroom where there were numerous students ready to defend the other person.

Really, pick your fights better, Bellaire.

"Try it to the best of your abilities," he said, nodding at the boy. Key word? Try.

..........

Offer a few suggestions? That was suspicious.

Hirsch furrowed his eyebrows as he looked across the desk at the fourth year. Offer a few suggestions. Very few people would come in here and offer suggestions for their consequences. It was the same as laying down your wand in the middle of a duel and telling your opponent which spells you think they should use to defeat you. Was he not going to fight his case?

"What kind of suggestions?" Curiosity was getting the better of him.

It was a shame he couldn't use Hogwarts's address to order takeaway. Some chicken wings would do him good, no doubt.

It was just as the man was getting up from his seat and taking a stretch that the sound of some heavy knocking came. His eyes flew over towards the door, all thoughts about food now driven out of there. Was this important? Did they have to come now, when he needed food? Could this wait?

Hirsch waited a moment or two before striding over towards the door and pulling it open. The result of seeing who was standing on the other side was instantaneous: the look of tiredness - it has been a long day - was gone and instead, there stood a man wearing a wide, dimpled smile on his face. "Natalia! Come in, come in."

Food could wait, then.
If Nat would have known she had interrupted his time to head to dinner she would have let him just go and spoke to him later. She wouldn't have bothered him, but since she did not realize she headed into the office after he said it was alright. "Thank you sir, I hope you don't mind me stopping by." Now that she was in the office she felt a bit nervous about being here.

She didn't fully go in and sit down either, she would wait until he would suggest the action, but maybe she wouldn't even have to sit. "I wanted to thank you again for being a contact for my possible internship with Mind's Eye's Record." Her smile grew as she said this. "I really do appreciate the fact that you would let me do that. It was a big help in the process."

Oh, how he enjoyed the sassy nature of his students. He didn't expect it too much from the girl so this was a pleasant surprise. "Is that a challenge for me, Noelle?" Dante Barrington would be proud of this.

It was a good thing that they did share the same drive. Sort of in the same way that him and Hadley Denaker did as well. Jokes were made left, right and centre and that was fine.

This was starting to sound like a heavy question, wasn't it? And, if he was completely honest with himself, he wasn't entirely sure how he was meant to answer. Surely, after everything, she wasn't starting to doubt herself? "Unrealistic? No. Not in the slightest, in fact. Yes, you've started this process early but in doing so and in keeping up with it, you've shown how determined and passionate you are about your chosen path." So hers was far from unrealistic. "You've been working exceptionally hard for this path and I'll do my best to see you through to it but I do think you can make it. No doubts about that."

Did that answer her question?[/COLOR]
Noelle's face was probably about to shine right off her face. She was ecstatic that her favorite professor had such faith in her. She wasn't about to let him down. She beamed at him before tucking her papers into the bag she brought and stood.

And yes, indeed it did answer her question.

"Thank you Professor, I better get going. Im sure other students need you. Thank you for talking with me. You gave me the little boost I needed." She gave him a little wave and then proceeded to head out the door.

"Professor Hirsch!?" Char peeked around the door and then skipped on in. She HAD been summoned after all. What was it about? Who knew? She hadn't done anything bad, she didn't think, so she was cheerful about the summons. "You wanted to see me?" The blonde might have just gone ahead and flopped down in one of the chairs, and then promptly rearranged herself with her legs underneath her body.

Yup. Ready to listen.

Sweet wasn't what he was aiming for... but... sure, he'd take it. Something to brag to Maggie about later - no doubt she'd be jealous.

Zeke was definitely not shy, he'd had too much exposure to Hirsch to feel shy. In a way, the man had become as close an ally to him as Sabel had been (and still was)... and allies were always appreciated. As such, Zeke simply nodded at first regarding 'perspectives' letting the idea sink in a little before continuing. "About my future... I guess?" Yeah, he sounded uncertain, and maybe he ought to be, but really his head was just a bit of a mess. "I mean, I'd settled on studying Curse Breaking, but, I don't know, I guess I never really considered any other options. Are there other options?" For him?

It wasn't that he was indecisive, on the contrary when he picked something he tended to stick with it, for good... but the question still needed to be raised. "What made you decide you wanted to teach?"

Regarding the food though, who was he to make the man wait? People could talk through food perfectly fine in his opinion. To show as much he nodded, taking a generous mouthful for himself as well.

The man didn't mind waiting a while longer to get some food. After all, the house elves weren't exactly going to say no to making something for him, were they? He could always pop down there and ask them nicely enough, preferably something with chicken in it. Besides, he didn't think he had the heart to turn the girl away, not when she looked fairly happy right now.

"No, not at all!" he said, gesturing towards a seat by his desk. He, himself, went to sit down on his own seat on the other side of the desk while she talked. It was funny how the girl had come to him to ask for a reference when his knowledge on the subject was pretty scarce. There was only so much he could write on the reference concerning music.

But her words? Her words were relieving, to say the least. "You're very welcome. I was worried that the reference might not be up to par but I'm glad that it has proved to be useful." No need to mention how little he mentioned music. Nope. "How did the meeting go? Did they like your piece?" Was it still called a piece?

It was very sweet of her to be thinking of the other students, did she know? He doubted very much whether someone needed him right now, unless there was an emergency, but that was still nice of her.

"You're welcome, Noelle. Keep up the great work and try not to doubt yourself." Otherwise she could risk falling behind which would be a tragic outcome after all the effort she had put into this.

Raising a hand, Hirsch gave her a quick wave in return as she left.

Hirsch was ecstatic. His usually calm persona was broken with an excitement that made him tap his feet incessantly and steal impatient glances at the clock every now and then. When he wasn't looking at the clock, his eyes found the letter that was open on his desk: the letter that was the very reason he'd called this student to come to his office. He'd read it over multiple times, sure, but he couldn't help reading over certain parts, as if he was re-reading his favourite snippets in a book.

Ah, there she was!

Looking up, Hirsch's face broke into a wide, dimpled smile as he saw the Gryffindor there. "Hello, Miss Kettleburn! Yes, do come in." A request that was useless since she was already making herself comfortable in his office. Did he mind? Not at all.

"So, I called you here because I have received a very interesting letter regarding you." At those words, he slid the letter towards her for her to read, even if he was going to summarise what it said. "The British Youth Duelling Association comprises of the best duellers in the country and they host competitions - duelling competitions - against other champions across Europe. They've written to me to say that...... well,"

He paused for a moment for dramatic effect and to smile widely at her.

"You'be been chosen as a representative!"

While Hirsch may have initially been happy to see the Gryffindor here, the words 'my future' were enough to get his mood to plummet. He knew, when he became a teacher, that you shouldn't get too attached to your students. They needed to grow up and leave the institution and you had to let them go through that journey because frankly, it was selfish to expect them to stay. However, he couldn't help but feel quite sad at the idea of not seeing this particular Gryffindor in his office next year. It just wasn't the same.

See? Selfish.

Clearing his theist, Hirsch decided to concentrate on the part about his choice for the future. A choice that was Defence-cantered and, therefore, made the man very happy. "Curse-breaking will be a really good choice for you. I don't doubt that you will succeed in this." After all, hadn't Zeke insisted on not wearing any armour during Hirsch's first taught lesson here?

Other options? Hm. "Well, teaching is one of them. Auror is another good choice and one that would suit you as well. Franklin Paton is looking towards that as well, as I'm sure you know." Those two were probably the most obvious options. "You could also work for the Ministry in the Law Enforcement section and not be an Auror. Granted, Auror is the more exciting option because you're out on the field a lot more but there are other areas of Law Enforcement that need people who are good with Defensive magic. Security is one of them. People would pay good money to have someone come and secure their building or organisation against a threat." Just saying. "There are also those who duel professionally and get paid to, essentially, out on a show. They take part in competitions where they can duel and they make a name for themselves depending on how good of a show they can put on while taking out their opponent. It's a flashy job, that one."

"You could also look into being a bodyguard for some famous celebrities since jinxing and defence would be useful there. It sounds like dull work and not somewhere where you could challenge yourself." Shrug. "There are some less obvious choices as well: Magizoologist, Healer, even someone who is simply travelling a lot. Defence is applicable in everyday life so it's important wherever you go." Not a good answer, was it?

What made him want to teach? Simple. "Between you and me, I prefer conversing with students to most adults. I like the idea of influencing young minds and teaching them something they probably didn't know. It's not the most exciting of jobs but I like teaching Defence because I love Defence. It's a rewarding job." Hopefully, that answered his question a little better.

A LETTER?

Who would write a letter, that was interesting, about her, to Hirsch? What had she DONE? Charlotte, before she'd even glanced at the letter or listened any further, racked her brains for any misdeeds that may or may not have been done, but she couldn't think of anything that would be letterworthy. Her mind caught up with her ears a second later and she stared at the professor in astonishment, eyes going wide.

WAIT. WAIT. REALLY?

She almost fell off the chair. Then stood up. Then sat down again, scooting right up to the edge of her seat.

"REALLY?" Whaaaaaaaa!!! "OHMYGOSH!"

THISWASHERDREAMOMGITWASBEGINNING.

"Thank you so much professor! CAN I HUG YOU? I'm GONNA HUG YOU!" She was, watch out, here it comes. Char shot up and darted around the desk and launched herself at the professor for squeezy, determined, overwhelmed, thankful, gleeful hugging. "This is amazing!"

WHEN DID IT START? WOULD SHE BE FAMOUS? WHO DID SHE GET TO DUEL FIRST?

.... probably she should read the letter instead of bouncing eagerly up and down.

He wasn't sure what it was about his question that seemed to dampen the mood, but he felt it... and didn't disagree with it. While on the whole he was ready to leave school, spread his wings and dive into the unknown... he would miss things about this place. He would miss people. Hirsch, was one of those people. So call him selfish too, but he had every intention of staying in touch with his mentor.

The initial support of his choice was pleasing to hear, simply confirming that it was well-suited. He liked to think it was... but then there was more. A whole lot more. And perhaps the best advice he'd received in some time.

Zeke nod his head at intervals as Hirsch lay it out for him. Options. At first he was mostly nodding to be polite, but a job in the DMLE was not for him. Once upon a time it might have been, but he'd seen the other side of things, the privatised side... and frankly he knew which he preferred."I grew up with Aurors, but if I go that avenue, or security, it won't be with the DMLE." As much as he wanted to go things alone and prove his own worth, working for his mum's company seemed a far better option. As it was, he already had plans to do just that, part-time, if his apprenticeship fell through.

What did get his attention was professional Duelling, his brows arched as he listened carefully. He'd watched some rounds before, but never considered it as a career for himself. "You think I could?" he asked without thinking. Of course he knew he'd have to start at the bottom, an amateur league or something, but... it was a neat idea. "I mean, you know I love the sport, but making the big leagues..." he let out a low whistle here... "that's something else." He was hungry though, and not just for his breakfast bun, but for the thrill of the sport. Would Maggie even support the idea of it?

The bodyguard business was acknowledged but otherwise overlooked - he didn't much care for celebrities, but the paying kind he would get plenty of through his mum's business. If she let him get near enough to those cases. The other travelling careers were all well and good, but his healing skills were satisfactory and not at all on his list of things he enjoyed doing. Perhaps his options were this limited. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing, he had direction.
