It was almost the end of April and the air was certainly warm that morning. The windows of the Muggle Studies classroom were all open to let the fresh air in. The said class was set up as usual- with the white board up at the front of the room with its purple marker; the room itself was divided into two with the path down the middle. Professor Stewart’s laptop is missing today and there are surely no indications as to what the topic for the lesson will be. Not to worry! All will be revealed soon!
Your Professor is seated behind her desk as she awaited your arrival. She’s all smiles, excited to get the lesson started. Come on! Have your seat! Have a chat with your friends in the meanwhile but don’t be rowdy!
OOC: Hello, guys and gals! I know I originally stated that I would open the lesson tonight but since it’s my day off, I figured I’d do so earlier. Have your charries chat with their friends or even with Kay just don’t go overboard, please! We’ll get started in about 36 hours! CLASS HAS STARTED!
Miranda really didn't undestand the question posed at all... Of course anyone could live without magic.... And why on earth would she appreciate the muggles?... What was there to appreciate?... Not much by Randa's reckoning.. They were boring and always making life difficult in their mundane ways... But knowing full well that her opinion may not be taken too well . So, she decided maybe it was best if she kept it to herself...

What kind of question was that?? Skylar just stared in disbelief at the professor. Sure this was a class about muggles and sure the second year knew plenty of muggles, but asking her to picture herself without something was just ... no. "Before the age of eleven, we technically all live without magic. And even before the age of seventeen, we have to live without magic during the summer months. So yes, professor, I think we all are capable of living without magic, but why should we have to when it just makes things so much more.... convenient."
Perhaps she was being stuck-up right now but it was the truth. Magic just made life easier so even though they were capable of living without, they shouldn't have to and she was almost positive that had her muggle friends been gifted with magical abilities, they wouldn't want to either ...

Harvey thought about all the times he spend thinking about Muggles. Much of the Muggle world was still alien to him - it's not exactly like he'd grown up with Muggles around who could tell him more about it - but they were so fascinating.
"I'd probably say I prefer to use magic, but that is all I know. I mean, even before I could use magic, everyone around me did anyway, so I really can't imagine life without it. But I think I'd like to be brave enough to try to live without magic at least for a while someday. It must lead people to come up with such amazing stuff just because they don't have another choice," he mused aloud.
Was he the only one feeling awfully uncomfortable in class today? Henry knew that Muggle Studies was meant to be an appreciation for Muggle culture, or at least he thought it was. But the candid opinions of at least a few of his classmates really kind of bothered him. He wasn't Muggle-born himself, but his parents were, meaning that much of his family were Muggles. And he was really put off by people saying they pitied them or found them ignorant.
Henry took a deep breath and tried to think about a response that would defend Muggles but still be respectful of other opinions. Muggles were just people like them, just without the magical abilities. But some of the answers were just plain rude. It probably didn't matter at this point because the teacher was moving on anyway.
He didn't really agree with what Skylar was saying, because while it was true that they themselves could not use cast spells with a wand before age eleven and were not allowed to do so outside of Hogwarts until the age of seventeen, he would guess nearly everyone here came from magical families who did use magic around them and for them. It was not nearly the same thing as going without. But he did not feel like saying that, or answering the question either. He thought he could live without magic if he had to, not that he wanted to. But he knew what it was like to live like a Muggle - at least close enough.
To be honest, the general vibe he was getting right now was a little bothersome. For now he remained uncharacteristically quiet and doodled in the margin of his parchment. He was listening though, just didn't feel like contributing at the moment.

Paige was gaping at him. As in...she was staring like he'd just told her the Hufflepuff Common Room was on fire and she could hardly believe her ears. It left the Gryffindor blinking, obviously confused by her reaction. Was it something he'd said? Suffice to say that by now, the boy had actually forgotten the response he'd only seconds ago given. That was how insignificant it was. That was how little he cared.
Blaise's mind was drawn back to it, however, when the Professor tried convincing them muggles were fine because they made their own inventions. Didn't matter. Their inventions could never compete with wizarding technology.
Her next question got a quirk of his brow in response. It didn't escape him that her gaze landed on him as she'd asked it and as one could imagine, the Fourth Year already had his response lined up.
"I'd do brilliantly without magic. It's always easier when I go home because no one can make me do magic--it's a law and I'm underaged. Here, it's always 'where is your wand? Why isn't it with you? Why don't you just cast and get it over with?' I survive Hogwarts just fine without it when left unprovoked and to my own devices. I'm not saying I'd wanna live like a muggle completely, because that would mean I wouldn't have my quills or all the other cool stuff wizards have. I'm just saying I could live without casting magic myself. Easily." He did it all the time.

Okay, that last question seemed custom made for Kitty - it was too bad she didn't have to time to answer. She had just been about to open her mouth to sing the praise of Muggles when the lesson moved on to the next question. That was okay, she'd just have to answer both at once.
"I simply ADORE Muggles," Kitty said to Professor Stewart and the whole class. Of course the professor already knew that. "They are so clueless about magic and all its advantages, but they are still able to get along by using other means like technology. They've invented all kinds of things that we are able to enjoy, like music, movies, books, and different technologies. It's very unfair how some wizards and witches think it's funny to play magical tricks on Muggles just because they can't defend themselves. Really, Muggles are a lot like us in every way that matters. Anyway, they're awesome. I wish we could more of them magic, even though I know that's illegal." She sighed dreamily as she pictured being able to reveal her magic to Muggles.
On with the next question. "I think I could get along without magic. My dad is a Muggle and all my neighbors growing up were Muggles. We lived in a Muggle town. Even though my mom is a witch she only uses magic when it's necessary (aside from her quick quotes quill) and encouraged me to learn things without magic. After coming to Hogwarts I can say that my magic has improved and I've gotten quite used to relying on it, but it wouldn't be the end of the world to go back to just using Muggle things. The things I would miss most would be the healing spells and magic hair dye's." All true.

The Ravenclaw picked his quill up and started to write down his opinion regarding this matter in full blown Japanese. Jace couldn’t decide which one is better, when the answer is very clear: Respect. Why can’t they just peacefully co-exist? It’s doable too!
“Definitely, professor.” He said with a raised hand, “Because we have a choice whether to use magic or not. Muggles don’t have that option. They have to rely on inventions which could take ages to develop.”

Paige liked the Gryffindor well enough and thought he was a hard worker and great asset to her team - even if his quill got the best of his writing and caused her a real migraine at times when it came to editing - but she was having a VERY difficult time stomaching his opinion. That sort of thing, although her imagination had come up with some more colorful language, was precisely why she was so uncomfortable with the question being posed on the first place. Thus...the Hufflepuff was just gaping at him. Quite obviously as she was hardly subtle when it came to emotional responses.
So much so that she nearly missed class moving on and DID miss the professor's response to to entirely. Sorry, no offense meant to you, professor.
It was only after a few of her classmates answered did the Hufflepuff stop her blatant staring and quiet fuming to pay attention and kind-of-sort-of piece together what had been asked in the first place. Something about...being able to use magic...and...um...oh okay. She thought she had it.
Taking a moment to reflect on her own day-to-day use, the only magic that she really capitalized on was her ability to apparate. Which, in all honesty, since turning 17 had made certain private affairs so much easier and she was ever grateful for it...but could she live without it? Well, she wouldn't die if she had to use the train...so she supposed yes? But in her chosen field post Hogwarts, it was more of the knowledge of magic that was important rather than actual application. At least at the base level.
"Professor?" Paige said, hand raised and with the intent of asking a question rather than answering. "Do you mean just lacking the capability of performing magic but still with the access to the knowledge of its usage? Not just spells but...potions and other magical subjects?" She pause for a moment, looking around the class a bit sheepishly.
Which was really...asking the difference between living like a Squib and living like a Muggle...
"Because...when I was underage I honestly felt more for Squibs and appreciated the bravery of those who fought to integrate into wizarding society rather than escape to the Muggle because of the stigma placed upon that particular status in our society. Having all that knowledge and potential at their fingertips but without the permission - in my case from wizarding law and in theirs genes - to perform."
Was something wrong with Paige? Kay just barely caught her staring at Blaise with her mouth open. “Is everything alright, Ms Skeeter?’’ Possibly because Kay was asked a question. “Either will work. The purpose of my question was to find out how each of you would react to a life without magic. I’m sorry, I should have been a little clearer.’’
She couldn’t help but smile at the response. What a Hufflepuff thing of Paige to say! “Excellent response! Yes, I would understand that you may feel a lot more for squibs.’’ She really liked this answer but the lesson was geared towards Muggles.

“Thank you for your responses, everyone. They have enlightened me a bit on your opinions.’’ Even if a few of them had been silent, she didn’t mind. Perhaps they were not ready to share their opinions and that was just fine. “Some of you have said that you would be able to get by without any form of magic. I would be inclined to agree since you could adapt to the Muggle way life. Earlier it was also mentioned that Muggles have come up with inventions to assist in their everyday lives. These inventions have helped with keeping them occupied, making certain jobs or tasks easier or bettered their lives in some way.’’
Kaysha moved towards the whiteboard. “Can you give me a few Muggle inventions that you particularly are fond of?’’ she asked as she uncapped the marker. “You may also give a brief reason why you enjoy them.’’

Jace somehow knew that the discussion would lead to muggle invention. It was quite obvious to the 14 year old, because...why the heck would they discuss something that is political in nature. Adults do that.
Alright, inventions! Jace got his hand up and answered the professor's question. "Internet, Microwaves, and electronic toilets we use in Japan." he said as he reached for his quill, ready to take down notes. "All three are very convenient to use...and it isn't time consuming."

Still thinking over the previous question, Paige found herself feeling a bit sheepish when she finally registered the next. Her exposure to muggle 'inventions' was not as widespread as some of her classmates seemed to have. Yes, her mother had remarried to a muggle and had some exposure during those weekends she had had to stay at their home rather than with daddy...but most of her true exposure had only come recently. She still wasn't sure how exactly to use a computer or laptop, although she really did enjoy watching muggle films on them while all snuggled up, and electricity was certainly useful...but her own mind kept going back to the first time she had had a lecture on magical vs muggle methods of healing and they had been allowed to try their hand at using an X-ray generator. That had just been...eye opening for the seventeen year old - although she had been fifteen at the time of the experience - even if the lecturer was always referencing muggle doctor's methods as being primitive.
She would have answered with electricity...were her thoughts not drifting to her healing seminars and future studies. She was, at present, outlining the next four years of coursework in her dormitory when she could not focus on her NEWT studies. Which was admittedly most of the time these days. She had about five different variations of class schedules to fulfill graduation requirements at present and found the whole educational mapping...a little too addicting.

She grinned as Tim as she sat down next to her. They would catch up after class. Right now class was starting and the first question caught her attention. What do you think of muggles? Well she felt many things about muggles. Everything was good, but she was shocked by the rude some people had. Did they seriously live in a world that people still had to be so hateful and mean. She wanted to comment, but decided it was better to just be quiet.
Why on earth would anyone pity them, they were brilliant in their own ways. Technology anyone? It was a great thing they had that we didn't. Plus she had seen more compassion from muggles then she ever did from wizards as a small child. She sat quiet not even trying to hide her irritation with the discussion that was going on.
Her hand finally raised with the next question, "Their electric guitars and radios. The internet is a great communication and faster then owls. " That was the coolest part about them.
Miranda knew instantly what her favourite Muggle invention was even though there were so many wonderful options to choose from... Still, her hand shot straight into the air .. why she had this burst of enthusiasm for the lesson was a mystery to her but she loved the thing that was waiting to be shared at the tip of her tongue as she waited to be called on...
" Ma'am, My absolute favourite object ever invented would definitely have to be television... Or even films... It's fascinating how they're able to transfer live action into a non magical moving sound filled picture.." , she beamed... It really was something the way it had been mastered.. She thought whoever was responsible for it's existance was truly a genius...
"Gosh there are so many!" After saying it she knew she had just used a common Mugge expression (Gosh) instead of the wizarding one (Merlin). She wracked her brain to try to arrive at just one invention, but two popped up more than anything else. These were ones she'd experienced a lot of herself while growing up in her mansion and they really were things she couldn't imagine living without.
"My two favorite Muggle inventions are movies and the internet. Actually, the internet is an even faster way of communicating to someone far away than owls are. I love owls, but communication is definitely something the Muggles are advanced with than we are." Stressing the part about her love of owls just so no one thought she was advocating giving them up. "And movies are awesome. Even if you don't particularly love the movie you are watching, as long as you don't hate it it's enjoyable. Like when we watched Wizard of Oz."

Ooh. They were talking about muggle inventions! Harriet was quite fond of her muggle technology. She used a lot of magic, or well her parents did at home, but she did still like the muggle stuff. It was like they had their own little bit of magic, that made some elements of life so much easier.
"I personally love the hair dryer" Harriet murmured as she raised her hand into the air. "I mean... having to hang around with wet hair isn't cool, and the hair dryer literally dries your hair in minutes. It's pretty great"

Oh, there were plenty of Muggle inventions that Henry enjoyed and he perked up a little at the question. In fact, his parents had several at home, including some of the ones mentioned. Maybe that would help some of the cultural appreciation, knowing how cool some of those could be.
Henry raised his hand. "In addition to some of the ones mentioned.." Because television, movies, and the internet were some of his favorites, and he didn't want to repeat answers. "I really like to play video games sometimes. And airplanes are pretty cool too." Yes, he knew that wasn't three, but to be fair, most of his favorites had already been mentioned.

Could she live without magic in her life?
Cassie wasn’t sure if she could or not for she had never fully had to. Though it wasn’t like she abused magic or took too much advantage with it in everything she did. She still moved to retrieve items instead of just summoning them to her. She still cooked and cleaned up and did chores at home without the use of magic, and her mum would have likely made that a rule even if the statute of underage sorcery wasn’t in place. And she used electronics which didn’t work well with magic anyway. But before she could even think of giving some kind of answer, they were moving on to the next train of thought.
At least a majority seemed to think like herself it wouldn’t be too hard to be a muggle as they as students technically did during the summer unless one was in Diagon Alley surrounded by Magic.
Now what inventions did she have a fondness for. “I’d have to say the radio and any musical inventions for sure,” she answered after raising her hand. “And e-book readers." To be able to have both at your fingertips as you travel was awesome. And she was surprised by how much could be kept in small space, especially the portable readers.
Her hand finally raised with the next question, "Their electric guitars and radios. The internet is a great communication and faster then owls. " That was the coolest part about them.
Tim was quietly listening and taking down notes. She didn't feel like giving an opinion on muggles. She liked them. They interested her. And now that she was living in the muggle world, she was still fascinated by them. But some of these comments were just plain rude, even for opinions. The blonde softly rolled her eyes and stuck to her notes. She took Nat's paper and wrote some down for her too. Nat wasn't big on taking notes sometimes so Tim did her the favor. As for the professor's next question, Tim had to think hard. There were many things she wondered about what the muggles had invented.
Sitting up properly, she smiled to herself and thought of how to break down her mental list. "I'd go with internet, video cameras," That was just off the top of her head.

Cars are fun as well.. Though Apparating is much better.." She said with a smile

"I personally love the hair dryer" Harriet murmured as she raised her hand into the air. "I mean... having to hang around with wet hair isn't cool, and the hair dryer literally dries your hair in minutes. It's pretty great"

Cassie wasn’t sure if she could or not for she had never fully had to. Though it wasn’t like she abused magic or took too much advantage with it in everything she did.

As each student gave their answers when they were called upon, Kay wrote them on her white board. She became more and more impressed at the growing list. “Excellent information, everyone. My favourite would actually be the internet. As Ms Valentine and a few others would have mentioned, it’s a really fast and almost efficient way of communicating.’’ The marker was capped again (for now) then she moved closer to the students. “Each of these inventions…’’ Kay indicated to the board. “Have helped Muggles and even some of you.’’ She knew that quite a few of her students used Muggle technology in some form. “We will explore a few Muggle technologies in the not so distant future so you can look at this as a gateway to that topic.
“For now, we have delved a little on the broad topic of Muggles and before we move onto today’s activity, I would like to ask you… what would you do to keep a good relationship or build one with muggles but at the same time still keeping our secrets?’’

Jonas blinked his eyes a bit and tilted his head in confusion....he wasn't entirely sure what she said. He had to replay the words in his mind over and over again for a bit...ooooh now he thinks he understood.
"I think it's best that you should have a good relationship with a muggle?" Jonas said raising his hand. "Cos' you gotta have trust in a relationship so to make sure they won't tell anyone else?" He thinks that sounded right.

"I think it would be hard..." Hattie murmured with a little shrug as she thought about it. "I mean I think we'd have to keep our magic a secret, regardless of how close we are to the person. Because we just don't know if they are going to tell anyone or what they'll do with the information" So that was a thing. "But like Jonas said.... we need to be able to trust each other" So they would need to get around that. She was silent for a few moments as she thought a little more. "In that case... I believe we'd have to be good talkers. Branching around the subject, so we can get them to trust us. But maybe not do too much magic to help with things, when we are off age obviously, because then we won't look suspicious"

Muggles and Magic. Heh. Naturally Tenacius can survive without magic because his folks made sure he can. It wasnt an excuse in his household that he cant wash his own dishes or make his own bed regardless of wands or house elves. It wasnt just about raising him not to be dependent on magic, it was about not raising him to be lazy.
But right what can he do to build and keep a good Muggle relationship? Trust? Well sure.... he nodded when Jonas and Hattie said them. But there was the matter of that pesky Statute of Secrecy, which quite frankly was more a bane than a boon as the centuries pass. But working with the Statute is in his blood-- the Astors have built an empire on both sides of the Secrecy divide. So if he could maybe borrow a page from the ol Astor playbook.... "Stories Professor. Muggles love good stories!" Nod nod mmhm he knows "I mean sure we may know of Muggles that would be very trustworthy in keeping secrets, but that Statute of Secrecy kinda doesnt care about that." which is why their clan generally despises it, among a list of other things "But yeah Muggles like stories, we can start to build relationships with stories that to us may be fact but to Muggles, its so fantastical they think its fiction. And Muggles always like the fantastical, it entertains them, distracts them, makes them feel good before going back to their Muggle routine. So we can still keep and grow these Muggle relationships but still keeping safe within the boundaries of the Statute."

Randa watched as the professor wrote their answers upon the board and asked the next question...
Hmmm? She thought for a moment about how to answer this... It was actually alot harder than Miranda first thought... To be honest she didn't really know or even associate with muggles. So, really the question was mute to her, but for the sake of the lesson she pondered how she may maintain some sort of relationship with a muggle or muggles should she find herself in such a position...
Raising her hand when she felt she had an appropriate response, she said when she was called upon, " I'd wager if I were to have the need to maianain a friendship or something with a muggle I'd be just as I am with my magical friends.. I don't see any real difference in us other than the fact that I can use magic.. And seeing as how we first learn to live in a mundane way do to the restriction of underaged magic usage... It'd be easy enough not to reveal the fact that I can use magic..."
She was a bit long winded and she hoped that she was understood as she fell silent.. But she was satisfied enough with her answer..
That was an interesting question. Henry thought a moment before raising his hand. "Professor, I have quite a few Muggles in my family. Some of them actually do know about magic.." His grandparents specifically as they had magical children. "Or.. a little bit, I guess. But most of them do not." His grandparents' knowledge was fairly limited from what he knew at least. It was pretty much on a need to know basis. And the rest were not permitted to know anything. He was told that from a young age.
"My cousins, for instance. They don't know that I'm a wizard, but I still try to hang out with them when I can over break." Unfortunately, he did have to cut them out of a big part of his life and he didn't feel as close to them as he'd like. "I can't tell them some things, and sometimes it feels a little bit like lying," he admitted. And sometimes he actually did have to lie, or at least hedge his way around answers. "But they're still loads of fun and there is still plenty we can do together that does not involve magic." People were people, y'know?
