It was early December and that certainly meant that it would be a nippy morning. However, Kay had seen to it that her classroom was warm enough for her students. She herself had built a roaring fire at the back of the class in the fireplace. Once you have been greeted by Professor Stewart who is standing at the entrance, you enter to notice the whiteboard poised at the front.
The seating arrangement is set up as per usual: there was a path in the middle of the room with an equal number of desks and chairs on either side. Towards the end of this path, you’ll recognise Kaysha’s laptop and projector set up on a small desk which you should NOT touch.
There are no indications about what today’s lesson will be about as yet. Take your seat and feel free to chat a bit with your friends.
OOC: Heya, guys! Welcome to the first OOC lesson! I hope you have read the rules before posting. We will move on in the usual 24 hours. Please keep chatting to a minimum! Thanks! CLASS HAS STARTED!
Oh, sweet! They were watching a movie for class? Henry already liked Muggle Studies for a variety of reasons but a movie would make it even better. He really hoped that it was one he already knew and liked, though watching something new might be good too. And the movie of discussion happened to be Wizard of Oz. It might not have been his absolute favorite, but it was one Henry was somewhat familiar with.
He wasn't sure that he could really say much about it other than what his classmates had already offered though. He had only seen it once. And should he be taking notes? Henry didn't usually take notes in Muggle Studies since he already knew a lot of it and he didn't really like taking notes, but he didn't know some of the trivia that the professor was putting on the board. Eh, effort.
And by the time he pulled out a notebook and found a blank page of parchment, the professor was telling them that they could put their writing materials away. Okay, then, no notes. But he did leave his notebook sitting out on his desk.
Getting ready to turn his attention to the film as it began, he leaned over and asked to the professor in a loud whisper, "Professor, do you have any popcorn?" Because, really, what was a movie without popcorn? Oh.. but one of the house elves had a different kind of snack instead, and that was cool too. "Thanks!" he grinned as the elf brought hot chocolate and cookies to his desk.
Now, back to the movie. He forgot how kind of boring the black and white part of it was. The color portion was much better.

Here came the elves! Kay was most pleased to see them even though she knew quite well that they would not refuse the chance to serve the kids. She beamed in their direction. “Pips, Nimma. That you so much for bringing the treats,’’ she whispered. “These look delicious!’’ She took a few cookies and a cup of hot chocolate. House elves were life savers!

She didn't put her things away because she figured if the movie got boring she could at least draw and doodle on her parchment. Maybe she could write a note or something.
Once the movie started she heard the comments from the others, but kept quiet as she watched. The black and white was a little odd, but soon enough it was full of color and it was pretty colors. She loved the ruby shoes and knew that the person and charge made the right decision on changing that from what the book said. Look at how they popped out at you and sparkled. She wondered if she could find shoes that looked like that. She knew a dress Kelly had in the closet that would be perfect for them.
Hmm...
Pulling out parchment she started writing;
SPOILER!!: don't mind us
Kelly,
Okay so I'm sitting in Muggle Studies. I'm assuming you are in here somewhere, but I got here late. Next time make sure I'm ready to go in time. Anyway did you see me fall? I can't even deal. At least it was dark so if certain people were in here they didn't fully see me face plant the floor.
Kay had taken a seat at the back of the class. Munching on her cookies, she surveyed her students. She could see some of them conversing (she hoped it was about the movie), some were watching raptly while others were eating. It was perfect!
Then there was Nat scribbling away. Was she making notes about the movie? Kay hoped so because she had seen the Slytherin paying attention to the movie as it had started.
SPOILER!!: Henry! <3

"No popcorn, Mr Whitebrook, but there are plenty of other goodies for you to try.'' Kay nodded encouragingly towards the elves. She was certain if Henry asked the elves would gladly get him some popcorn, however.
OOC: Dudes and dudettes! HAAAI! There are 24 hours left for the activity. I must say that I’m enjoying all the reactions to the scenes <3 Awesome job!
As he walked around giving students the food he was happy that they seemed happy. "You are welcome masters. Pips can give you more if you like some." As he turned to another row he heard master Henry say about popcorn.
"Pips can get it. Pips go get popcorn for masters." He set the tray down and popped way.

Her eyes moved from her parchment to the screen. The tin man was kind of fun, but she only looked up because the flying monkeys were coming up. She really wanted to have monkeys to do her work for her. That would be such a great thing. She could stay in her room and just have them get her everything. She watched as the monkeys went flying off.
With that so did her interest again. Snatching a brownie as the elf came past she nibbled on it a bit before looking down at her parchment again. Her eyes scanned thte room in the dark. How had she missed the best friends. Maybe one of them were there or maybe even... him?
Bloody hell why was it dark.
It was time to start writing on her parchment again. She had things to tell Kelly and this would be an easy way.

At least it was dark so if certain people were in here they didn't fully see me face plant the floor. Can you believe we are watching this movie? I just don't know how anyone even likes it. More important thing though. Since the bloody music room is locked and it doesn't seem we can get in, where are we going to practice now. Should we try the room of requirement or maybe just our dorm room? The room of requirement might be best then we can have instruments.

Paige simply smiled towards the house elves when they appeared, but made no movement towards taking and of their offerings despite her stomach advising her otherwise. She had some hard hitting analysis to take care of and pausing now and then to sip on hot chocolate or lick cookie crumbs off her fingers could potentially cause her to miss something vital.
Feeling a little less disappointed now that she understood the technicolor choice and usage - it really DID fit the descriptions from the source material in juxtaposition to the coloring used for Kansas - Paige's brows were furrowing once again when Glinda made her appearance and introduction. Wait...WHY was the change in direction necessary? In the book...Dorothy had the help of three magical women: an unnamed Good Witch of the North, Glinda the Good Witch of the South, and the Queen of the Field Mice. But now there was just Glinda...the Good Witch of the North...which means that...wait...what?
Jotting down THOUGHTS on her parchment, the seventh year was sufficient distracted by this song - follow follow follow follow follow the yellow brick road - and bounced a little in her seat to the rhythm. Of course, it wasn't anything spectacular nor heart conducting compared to the one Dorothy had sung while still in Kansas but it WAS catchy.
But still...why the change from South to North?

Movie and snacks? Okay this class was actually pretty great. Olly took back all he had thought about it being boring up until that point. He was excited to see this movie that he had never seen before, especially since it meant not having to do any class work. But it did sound good, from what he had been hearing from those around him who had seen it before. He lost all interest in the debate about silver or ruby shoes or whatever because he did not care at all.
Why was it black and white? How old was this, exactly? Very old. It must be good if people still knew what it was even when it had come out so long ago. But hadn't the professor said something about technicolor? This did not look technicolor. Hey a dog! He liked that it started out with a dog right at the beginning. And there was a mean woman trying to get the dog. He thought it would probably turn out alright because this was a movie after all, but he was still a bit worried. He was glad when she had the dog back but interested to see how she'd be able to keep Toto. And, oh yeah, when was it going to be technicolor?

Oh goodie!
They would be watching the movie in its entirety for today. Looks like she wasn’t going to have to wait until the holidays to see it again. Cassie but away her notes and such to settle in for the viewing, mildly curious as to who Professor Stewart meant by visitors. Guess they would find out eventually. Instead her focus returned to the projector when the movie was restarted so they could view it from beginning to the very end instead of the brief clip from before.
As she knew from previous viewings, it started out as black and white. Well rather brown and white. In a simple rural setting…Kansas. And there was Dorothy, with her little dog. And oh! The mean Miss Gulch! Wishing to cause harm to a poor dog that you really couldn’t blame for getting in someplace that didn’t have a proper fence. Or just harming an animal period.

Azura sniffled as she leaned back and wiped her eyes.. she was barely though the movie and already she as losing it! Okay.. she just needed to breathe..
And maybe this summer ask her mother if they could watch this movie together.. until then.. she just needed to focus..
She took a breath as she focused back on the movie and smiled as Dorothy started to follow the yellow brick road.. she sometimes wished she had a road that she could follow to know what to do with her life.
Though hers would be the purple brick road!
She grinned to herself as she watched as the scarecrow came into view! Yay! She liked him and she glanced over at Jazzy and nudged him a bit.. it was him!

“Thanks,” Cassie said as one house elf…Nimma she remembered…passed out hot chocolate. The girl taking a sip of the warm liquid as she debated what else was up for grabs. Pity no popcorn, or perhaps there would be, Pips disappearing with a pop in answer. Anyway, the Ravenclaw snatched a cookie, dunking it her hot chocolate mug as she resumed watching the movie with her full attention. The hurling, twirling movement of the tornado now plastered across the projection as the farmhouse was taken up into it and everything else followed around.
The chickens…the cow.
Gulch turning into the Witch!
WHOMP!!!
The house had landed with a thump which Cassie had to admit would have had to have some kind of protection charms on it to remain that intact if it wasn’t a movie. But it was and the house was intact and Dorothy was uninjured as she stepped out into the now-colored world outside. Talk about a grand surprise! Forget the appearance of little people that soon followed.
Or the floating woman in a pink bubble that changed sizes and disappeared as seemingly needed.

There was a boy talking to her. Char wasn't sure what for though. What was she waiting for? No idea. She might've smiled at him but it was dark so probably he wouldn't see anyways. She watched the movie and had an OHHHH moment when it went colour after the twister bit.
........... Oz was kind of weird huh?
How come that fairy godmother lady was the boss and telling people to come out? And why were those munchkins singing? And how did the munchkins know what happened to the house while it was in the twister? Lullaby League? And what WAS the lollipop guild? And did Dorothy even have anything useful in her basket?
OOOOOH there was a HAG! LOOK. DID EVERYONE SEE THE HAG???
Ohhh..... oh pooor witch! That was her sister? Ohhh! And those weren't even Dorothy's shoes! Glinda was kind of mean, huh?
...... this was veery confusing!

For as much as he was trying not to disrupt the movie for anyone else, Blaise couldn't help but snicker at Genny's suggestion. Muggles were sometimes an indecisive bunch making the excuse just as legit as any other. "I bet the people in the theatre way back then thought it was really neat." What with the advent of technology and all that stuff, they couldn't have been too used to seeing stuff like this. Come to think of it, they might have been blown out of the park.
And this was actually interesting--not the girl who'd just found herself hopelessly lost in a completely different world and was handling it QUITE calm under those circumstances, but rather this muggle practice Genny was explaining. Did Bentley know about this?
He didn't think to question her leaning away, oh no, he had questions otherwise. "But then why pay to watch the movie? Do the people that work there just...let them?" He got that the cinema would be dark and all but he still imagined it'd be a bit awkward.
While Genny signaled the elf over, Blaise found his gaze shifting momentarily back to the film. He wasn't entirely sure what was going on--having been only occasionally glancing at the screen every now and then--but WHAT was that lion? "This is practically scandalous." He decided. A cowardly lion sure but that guy on screen was a downright awful mess! Circe.
Genny averted her eyes towards the screen to see where they were in the movie. She was glad her little joke made Blaise laugh, not many people laughed at her jokes. "That's exactly what I thought too!" She squeaked!whispered back to him when he said her thoughts out loud. Again, not many people spoke her thoughts out loud! Genny was basically giddy and glad she changed seats to sit next to Blaise. Ace was too busy manning the monitor anyway.
Dorothy looked like someone Genny would get along with, what with handling this lost thing as an adventure instead of curling up under a tree and crying herself to oblivion. Although the shoes thing was.... meh. Genny was still not sold on it, but she didn't want to upset Paige so she refused to dwell too much on it. Speaking of Paige, she didn't look as happy as one would think considering she had opinions about this movie.
Blaise's questions sounded like Davie's, of that of a Ravenclaw. "Uhm." Who cares? Did he honestly skipped over the fact that people snogged there to question whether they were caught or not? Genny paused only for a hot second before hazarding a guess. "Guess they weren't caught often... or that it's not illegal... unless things got super hot and they were disrupting the others with their, uh, sounds." Genny's cheeks were not as pale as they used to be a second ago. She didn't like that this had this effect on her so she frowned to look more serious and nonchalant. "I think I'd like it if it was not allowed. It's similar to us snogging in the broom cupboard I guess-- not us us, but students us. Wizard students us." She clarified quickly. Ahem. The lion thing was not remotely as important as this conversation though so she didn't react at it.

Eyes lifting to the screen again she saw they had the lion now. Hmm she missed the part that the rumor had been about that she heard from the muggle kids at the bowling alley once. No matter really she didn't care either way, but she was just sitting their watching for a moment or two. When the other elf brought drinks around she kindly grabbed one and said thank you. It was nice of the professor to have them bring snacks. Nat had been snacking lots since being back. It was now her stress relief, ice cream being the best one to have.
Turning her eyes back to the movie she couldn't help but thing the yellow brick road would have been done in a different color. She wasn't a fan of the yellow for some reason, but it wasn't her movie so she just stayed quiet. Her quill began to move again as she continued with her note she was writing.

Also remind me to tell you later about Miami and Cal things. I thought things would be different now that I'm back, but I feel like some things have just picked right back up again. Not the awful things, but the people things. Oh and I still haven't told you about Alex, make sure I tell you about that too. I still can't even deal with that. Maybe I need to talk to Zay, but I but Zay so much that I'm afraid he'll be the next to stop being my friend.
Kitty was watching the scene where Dorothy sang "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." In her opinion it was the best of the songs in Wizard of Oz, though "The Merry Old Land Of Oz" was very exciting. She could absolutely understand why Dorothy would run away, in her situation Kitty would do the exact same thing.
"Toto's cute," she muttered to no one in particular as she sipped her milk.
Then the storm began. It was fun watching all the things that Dorothy saw inside the tornado, like her friends from the farm and the lady who had been trying to take away Toto. When she had first watched the movie her mom had to explain to her that they were not "really" in the tornado, that Dorothy had just been imaging it.

In all honesty it made perfect sense for people back then to be awed by something that kids nowadays might almost have considered tacky. Blaise himself didn't watch very many muggles things but when he got to, they were always very...uh...how did he describe it? There was always a lot of colour and stuff that looked unreal--but in a cool sort of way and just....NOT like how this was looking right now.
Being sure to keep up with the movie, even as he was keeping up his whispered conversation with Genny, Blaise couldn't help but think that he'd never go adventuring with this Dorothy girl. Bad choices and poor luck made someone a BAD travel companion. Let's forget she only just met these people and decided to follow some yellow brick road for a second, how did she decide everything else was her problem?? Getting sent to that wizard guy, deciding they were going to defeat the wicked witch of the west--offensive really--then getting herself captured. Someone needed to tell her she wasn't doing this right.
Of course, he wouldn't be the one to tell her, both because it was silly to talk at a screen and because he was very busy talking to one Geneva Tate. In the dimly lit room, he didn't realize the way her cheeks had gained colour but he was certainly interested enough otherwise. "Paying for a place to snog. Muggles have some of the strangest ideas but uh...." Ahem, when she put it like that"yeah...maybe they aren't very disruptive so it's fine." The boy could feel a steady warmth creeping up the back of his neck and his ears at the thought and Genny's mention of a broom closet didn't help one bit. "I think I get it now." And the movie, he was getting the movie too....sorta...kinda...for the most part. "Have you been in a theatre where that happened?"

Jace clasped his hands together as he sat back and waited for the movie to start. To be honest, he wasn’t that interested in the movie, but was curious enough to know why some of his classmates react to it as if their life depended on it. Was it a classic bedtime story in England, and has become part of their childhood? He would never know...but he would discover soon enough why this is such a huge deal to some.
As the house elf offered cookies and other goodies, Jace got himself a small share from the batch and nibbled it quietly as he watched the movie.
Head slowly tilting to the side, the Ravenclaw wondered why they had a much older kid portray an eleven year old in a book. No 17 year old, in real life, would actually sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, right? She’d actually be on her way to search for it like any reasonable teen. But then again, it was muggle fiction. What else did he expect?
Also...who actually ate cookies during a movie? Ace was right about the popcorn though. A warm paper bucket of salty goodness would be nice right about now...

Did they hear the pop again? Pips was back within minutes of leaving and this time popcorn was filling the room. He moved towards master Henry and lifted the bowl. "Popcorn just like you asked sir. Pips makes sure you get what you want for snacks. " He reached up and honked his nose in triumph of getting this done, but soon realized it probably was a distraction from what the students were watching.
"Pips sorry ma'am, he didn't mean to honk his nose loudly."

Olly wasn't big into musicals, and he kind of zoned out when Dorothy started singing. It ws dark and warm and...he probably shouldn't fall asleep. But was she ever going to be done singing? His mind wandered for a bit but his attention snapped back to the movie when a tornado started. That was exciting. There was a lot of running and action, except Dorothy wasn't there. Was she going to make it back in time? Apparently not. She should have run faster, or not ran away right when it looked like a tornado was coming. Seriously she did not plan very well.
Olly seriously doubted that a real twister would ever be strong enough to lift up an entire house. But he quickly forgot about that thought and watched the things flying through around the house. There was that mean woman again, and now she was a witch?? He was liking this a lot better than the beginning of the movie and he hoped it would stay at that level of interesting.
Watching her fellow classmates reactions to the film was as fun as the movie itself. Many of them had already seen it (by the looks of things) but Kitty occasionally glanced sideways to see their expressions anyway. Nearby Blaise and Genny were talking in low voices about snogging, though Kitty didn't catch the other words they said. Ooh were they dating?
Her attention was diverted back to the movie as Dorothy landed and the screen changed. The munchkins were always fun to watch. She wondered to herself what rules the Wicked Witch had enslaved them by. Kitty enjoyed listening to the song, and then watching as the Wicked Witch's sister disrupted things. Soon she was banished by Glinda (in a stylish bubble) and Dorthy was off on her quest.

And the movie, he was getting the movie too....sorta...kinda...for the most part. "Have you been in a theatre where that happened?"
Dorothy was getting more annoying the further the movie went. She related to Genny at first, what with her trying to get the attention of everyone around her but everyone was so old and so busy? That was definitely Genny. Even when she protected her dog and was ready to bite the old woman for it, but now? With the dramatic gasps and the trembling in front of a giant green face known as Oz? No. That was not Genny. The singing and the dancing was terribly bad, too, so she was less of a fan of Dorothy now.
She turned her attention back to Blaise when the Oz sent the company away. The movie had that childish sense to it that didn't hook her, even the metaphors or so-called wise words were lost on her. "I've never been to a theater, no. But mom would take me if I asked." Genny clarified. "There are theaters in the outside, too. Muggles come to watch in their cars to a giant floating screen." The floating was done in a magicless way, she assumed. "I saw that on a flyer in muggle London once. It looked nice." But judging from this movie, Genny wouldn't be a movie junkie if she was a Muggle.
The next several scenes Kitty watched in cheerful contentment. Actually, the songs were not really her type of music. They were okay and she could appreciate their quality and that other people loved them, but it wasn't really her thing. That didn't mean she didn't enjoy watching it with her classmates though, and she couldn't help but giggle a few times in the Cowardly Lion's song. Only one instance in the movie made her annoyed at Dorothy. That was how she annoyed the trees and tricked them into throwing fruit at them. Not that it was the end of the world, but Kitty thought that she would have been more respectful to the trees (they were sentient after all) than Dorothy had been. On the other hand, she probably would have done the same thing if her negotiations didn't work, but she wouldn't have given up so quickly. Surely there had to be one sympathetic tree who could be coaxed into giving them apples, right???
When Kitty was halfway finished with her milk she ate her cookies. Then she finished the milk. Really delicious.
Finally Dorothy and her friends arrived at the merry old land of Oz. One of Kitty's favorite scenes in the movie was when Dorothy and company were enchanted by the flowers. Going with the assumption that the entire thing was a dream, Kitty found herself wondering what would have happened if Dorothy had fallen into a deep slumber in the field. Would she have woken up safe and sound back home?
Then they were off to meet Oz. Kitty began to wonder if she should have defended Oz so passionately earlier in the lesson. While she stood by her sympathy for him, she wondered why or why did he send Dorothy to face the Wicked Witch unprepared. He was king of the world! The LEAST he could have done would be to send a few guards with her. Today was the first time that thought occurred to her. She still liked him, but she could definitely see his faults here.

Jace has never been to Kansas before, so really, he didn’t have anything to compare to. He was more than sure though that wherever Dorothy was, it was a whole lot better. You know...talking objects...wizards, witches, that lot. It would be like muggles discovering the wizarding community.
Hmm. Dorothy must’ve been obliviated in the end where she’s not sure if it had been a dream or not. If only Toto could talk, yeah? Would’ve been very convenient for everybody really.
The smell of popcorn filled the room the moment Pips came back. He’d seen the house elf offer a bowl to Henry and wondered if there was more.

At this point in the movie, Blaise could no longer be sure of what he was watching. Sure, he got the CONCEPT behind the movie but Merlin's soggy beard was he the only one who realized how easily half this stuff could have been avoided--and how laughable it was to expect the merry band of misfits to successfully carry out a rescue mission based on everything else the movie had shown? For all their good intentions, life didn't work that way.
The shoes...he would liken to the Elder wand for the sake of his own sanity but sweet holy kneazle killing for a pair of shoes? Couldn't she just....make another pair....? Or....remove the feet? That would kinda be like disarming, wouldn't it?
The Gryffindor didn't have much time to ponder this however, as Genny went on to explain about theatres being outside on floating screens. "Muggle theatres? Floating screens? I didn't know they could do that sort of thing." Floating...was typically magic, wasn't it? That was something to ponder."I've never been to a theatre either but now I'm thinking I'll need to visit one during the summer." This class didn't count as a theatre. Hardly. Not even when the elves brought popcorn that he would also be having none of.
Merlin, he'd only looked away from the screen for a moment and now the witch was melting. What...how.....why....? Huh? "Do you think we should even question it at this point?" Melting. Wow. Right then.

Forgetting the bowl of popcorn, Jace cradled his head in his hand and continued to watch the movie. His attention was on Toto seeing how cute and behaved the dog was all throughout the movie, until the Scarecrow came to the scene. Alright, more singing and dancing and tumbling about. The Ravenclaw tapped his parchment with his index finger, following the beat of the music.
...And my head I’d be scratchin’ while my thoughts were busy hatchin’ if I only had a brain...
...I’s unravel every riddle for any individual in trouble or in pain...
The music and the words brought a grin on Jace’s face. Even if the scarecrow wanted a brain for himself, he was fine without it. He’s got heart at least. “That fellow doesn’t know what he’s asking for...” the Ravenclaw shook his head as the thought amused him.

The dark forest was one of coolest scenes in the movie, at least in Kitty's opinion. Everything from the crow to the flying monkeys was well done. "Wicked!" she exclaimed quietly as they came upon the guards chanting what seemed like "Oreo, Oreo!" The scene with the hourglass was the darkest in the movie, though of course Kitty was much too old to be frightened by it. You could hear her clapping when the Wicked Witch was melting. "Sorry," she muttered afterwards in case that bothered anyone.
Kitty knew the movie was coming to a close as they returned to Oz. That was too bad because watching a movie with her friends while eating snacks was probably the best type of lesson she'd ever experienced. Hopefully they could do this again next time, with another movie of course.
Oz's secret was discovered (thanks to Toto!) then and he explained his story. Kitty strongly disagreed with the advice he gave the Tin Man, but she knew he meant well. To his credit he offered to take Dorothy back home in his balloon, but unfortunately his balloon floated away before she could enter and poor Dorothy was stuck. Everything was fixed by Glinda. Dorthy clicked her shoes and said 'There's no place like home," and she was back home.
Jonas watched the movie as it went on....he had seen it before but he forgot a lot of it. Oh! Flying monkeys! Here's the bubbles that one girl was talking about....taking another sip of hot chocolate, he smiled.
