Spring is coming and the temperature is getting warmer. It's such a perfect weather to have another outdoor class again. Jordan had set up the creature backyard area with the standing blackboard and desks. There's no sign of any creature that he would teach about today, just like usual.
The CoMC professor was standing there with his second (or third?) cup of coffee today, a cup of Americano from the finest Ethiopia Yirgacheffe coffee beans. Come on in, take a seat and hope that you will enjoy the class.
OOC: welcome to your second lesson of CoMC! Please keep in mind that this is not your second IC lesson, and feel free to join. Class will be started in 20-26 hours.CLASS HAS STARTED, FEEL FREE TO JUMP IN BUT DON'T ANNOUNCE THAT YOU'RE CHARACTER IS LATE (UNLESS YOU UNDERSTOOD THE IC CONSEQUENCES)

Care of Magical Creatures was one of Olly's favorite classes. It was outside, which was fun, and the magical creature part was of course always fun. He was glad that the weather was getting warmer, so it was comfortable for the outside lesson. While he didn't necessarily mind the cold, being warmer was always better. And not as many layers were required.
Olly tried to think of magical birds. The first one that he thought of was, of course, the Phoenix. But of course somebody beat him to it. Olly raised his hand to give a different answer. "Owls aren't technicallyy magical, professor, but they are used by wizards. They're very smart and they're able to bring letters to whoever we want to send them to."

Ohh, magical birds! Ariadne knew a decent amount about them, causing her mind to begin racing to come up with an answer. A few others had already shared, so Ariadne tossed all information about those birds out of her mind and tried to come up with something new. Hmm...
Her hand shot into the air, and she waved it a bit before saying anything. "There's the birds belonging to Cliodna," she said. Cliodna was a druidess featured on one of her chocolate frog cards. Apparently, she had also discovered moondew. Anyway... "There were three magical birds that followed her around. It's said that the birds cured the sick by singing them to sleep."
So now that class had begun Katerina selttled down. Magical birds. Well she did know a thing or two about them. She listened as some of the other students answered.
Once she decided what her own answer would be she raised her hand. "Augurey. They were once believed to foretell death with their cry, but it was researched later that it was about to rain when they cry." Which was cool that they could predict the rain or death either way both reasons of their cry was kind of useful.

Ooooh, magical birds? Katy perked up from her spot in the crowd, and she listened with interest as her classmates shared a whole list of birds. Most of them she knew, but there were a few that were new even to her. Did her mum know about those? Her dad? She should write to them.
Katy's hand went up when there was a lull in the activity. "That jobberknoll, Professor. It's quiet for its whooooooooole life, and then when it dies, it will sing back every sound it ever heard." Imagine how long and wild that song would be?

She grinned at him with his comment. "I think it's all in who you trust professor. We'd trust you with coffee any day sir." Nat was a regular at the barns so she had come to know the professor and trust him more then she did at the beginning. She still had a ways to go with him, but it was at least not jumpy scared anymore.
As the class started and he spoke she looked to the sky as if birds would just appear. Not that they really would, but one said birds she just looked to where she usually saw them. Putting up her hand she smiled, "The phoenix is a gorgeous magical bird that has red and gold feathers, when they become old or ill they will die and then catch on fire. A new phoenix will rise from it's ashes." They were the prettiest birds in the magical world. She always enjoyed looking at pictures of them.
Once she was finished she gave Miranda a small smile and a wave. She felt bad she didn't get to talk more before class started, but there would be time to talk after.

Magical birds. Cool topic. And not a hard question. Phoenixes and golden snidgets got mentioned which were certainly the most popular or obvious choices at least to Cass. The Ravenclaw tried to think of her own answer as those and more were added to the list. The options certainly seemed to be dwindling for unique ones but then he had an idea and raised her hand.
“Would an Occamy count?” She seemed to remember mention of wings but not if it was a type of bird,

What did Paige know about magical birds? Only that she admired them greatly. Even if Oliver had just pointed out that, technically, owls were not of the magical variety...they were still considered her favorite creature period - and now she was missing Lionel. After all, owls were capable of becoming familiars to wizards and that was a sort of magical bond that was not easily achieved and a rare gift. Not to mention how effortless they made flight look ... and their bright eyes...
The seventh year was getting a bit too caught up in her thoughts about owls to raise her hand and offer up other fowl names - phoenix and snidget being the others she knew a lick about it - but her hand still went up.
"Professor, is a cockatrice considered a magical bird?" The whole lizard's tail and a rooster's head ... and being a sister species to the basilisk was a bit confusing.
Speaking of confusing...another question...or plea...or both...
"As Oliver mentioned...many may argue that owls are mundane...but is there really no magical blood in them?" she asked, her own eyes widening like that of an owl's in an almost say-it-ain't-so manner. "While they do not possess healing tears and the ability to carry heavy loads like a phoenix...nor 360° rotational wings and speed of the golden snidget...they are capable of becoming magical familiars and their ability to trace and track witches and wizards is beyond impressive...so they possess an innate bent for magic? Or...is this more of a trait they have received because generations of their ancestors have been domesticated and trained by witches and wizards for centuries? It just seems...unusual for a creature like an owl to be purely mundane if it quite literally takes incredibly strong Repelling, Disguising or Masking Spells...and protective magic... for a witch or wizard to become untraceable by owls."

Taking another sip of his coffee, Jordan saw a Slytherin just walked passing by him without greetings or something like that. Not that he's making a fuss about that but well, that was just plain rude. "Good to see you, Mr. Emery. Such a polite gesture to come in here without any greetings." Cannot help with that sarcastic comment, not sorry.
Blinking his eyes, a red tint started to coat Jonas' cheeks. He guessed the good weather had put him on cloud nine, he completely ignored the teacher.
"Sorry," he muttered quickly. But it was too late, the teacher had moved on to the other students.

Now his coffee had finished, Jordan checked his watch. Okay, it's time to start the class. "Good morning, students!" He greeted all the attending students. "Welcome to another class of mine, and I'd like to day that it's a beautiful day to learn about Magical Creatures." Pretty sure that he was stealing those catchphrase from someone else with a little bit modification, but he didn't remember from whom.
"Now, could you guys name one type of bird that considers as a magical creature?" Straight to the point, he opened his lesson by asking the students about magical birds. "Don't forget to raise your hand before answering. If you know their magical properties, it would be better if you also mention it."
Birds. Right uh....would the obvious one be a phoenix? What about an owl? The second one was kind of out of the box.
"Um..." Jonas started to say as he raised his hand. "They may not be magical but would owl's count? I mean, we use them to deliver our mail so I suppose..." he trailed off.

His classmates were in a good mood today, yes? Look at them give the question a go! Jace simply sat back and stayed quiet as he took down notes, and wrote down the things he know about each creature.
The topic for today could be any from the list, right? The Ravenclaw's mind automatically jumped to the activity they will be doing today. Last time, they had a great time with the Winged Horses...maybe this time they will get to...errr...groom a magical bird? Or perhaps try their hands on domesticating a Phoenix? That would be super awesome!

The lesson began rather quickly after she had found herself a seat. Almost the minute their professor had finished his coffee in fact. Right into the days topic the man jumped as well. Well alright then.
Hady reached into her bag pulling out a sheet of parchment and her quill. For several moments all she did was take down notes on what her fellow mates were saying. Some really good answers to the question. One after another everyone was replying saying something different. When there was a brief pause Hady raised her hand. "What about the poisonous duck, professor? It's bred in the Ministry of Magic." She knew about it mostly due to her father and aunt both working there but also thanks to her love or reading about all things creature related. Chances were this wasn't the answer the man had been looking for but she liked to be different and not say what everyone else was saying.

"Yes, phoenix." Jordan responded to those students who mentioned about phoenixes. It's such a very popular one so no wonder why it also got mentioned here. "Besides the healing powers from the tears and the ability of rising from its own ashes, the feather of phoenix tail also can be used as the wand core."

Owls. He knew that there might be some students would mention this familiar. There were still some debates about owls being a mundane or magical creatures. "Owls are considering as magical creatures." The CoMC Professor spoke. "Magical owls are known by their ability to deliver stuffs without an answer, also for their speed and discretion." Those mundane owls might not have those abilities.
But cockatrice? Hmmm... "We know that some of the magical creatures are breeds from two or more species, just like cockatrice. Therefore, we can't really decide if it belongs to the bird group or not. But if we looked at its habit, I think it's more taking a lizard form than the rooster one."
Moving on...

When Professor Hernandez asked them to name a bird that was considered a magical creature her hand shot into the air. There were several magical birds she knew about, but she could only give one answer so she picked her favorite. "A Golden Snidget." She answered, before adding. "It's a spherical bird that can fly very fast. They can change speed and direction almost instantaneously."
"Yes, golden snidgets." He nodded. "They were introduced first in 1269 in a quidditch game and whoever could catch them will be rewarded 150 galleons. But now they're being replaced by golden snitch." He added a little bit trivia about that creature. Such a pretty impressive bird.

Thunderbird?

Poisonous duck. He did hear about those though about being bred in the Ministry and stuffs. "That also counts. He nodded.
"Good answers, everyone. Unfortunately that we might not gonna be able to learn about all of them today due to limited time, so we're just gonna discuss about Fwooper." He spoke. - Classified as XXX (competent wizard should cope)
- Has bright-colored feathers
- It song can drive people insane -> Silencing charm is required and has to be reinforced monthly
- Their feathers are useful as quills
- The four colour varieties of the Fwooper are used to represent the number four, in the runic alphabet
- License to own the fwooper is required
He underlined the statement at the bottom. "Why do you think that we must have a license to own a fwooper?" He threw the next question to the students. Was it because of the classification or something else?
OOC: Your answer can be based on the facts or just make it up, it's okay. Creativity is necessary Class will be resumed in approximately 24 hours or so.

They were going to discuss Fwoopers today? The purple eyed Ravenclaw was in heaven and the smile hadn't left her face! Also this was like the third time she had unknowingly predicted the lesson and still no points?
Fwoopers!
Anyways! Back to the question at hand!
Azura's hand went into the air at the question and she started to speak. "I would say it's because of how their song can drive people insane.. you need to prove you are capable of handling the creature and of keeping the silencing charm on it. Having a license proves you are responsible enough to own one. "
Miranda didnt have a chance really to chime in on the bird question because so many others were saying the answers she would have given .. But the next part about the Fwoopers she had to think of for a few minutes before formulating an answer that was worth piping up about...
Hmmm.. Deep in thought as others began to answer.. She finally came up with one and raised her hand, hoping against all hope that she wouldn't sound like a moron..
" Professor... A liscense is required I'd think because of the dangers they can inflict on others around them.. I mean if you didnt know your neighbor had one and you went walking by their window as it began to sing you could lose your mind if you don't know how to quelch the effects from it's song..."
Merlin she hoped that was understanable.. It made sense to her so hopefully..
"The Dodo bird, Professor," said Kitty, though everyone else was talking and she hadn't it said very loudly so it was unlikely the professor heard. Oh well. That was okay, and she had a feeling that someone else had mentioned it already under a different name.
Her hand sprang into the air and she spoke in a louder voice this time so as to be heard. "I agree with Azura and Miranda's answers," she said. "The only dangerous thing about Fwoopers is their song, so that has to be why they have the classification of XXX. It makes perfect sense that you would need a license to own one, so that you prove that you are able to use the silencing charm."
"Professor, I have a question. Does the Fwooper's song drive animals insane also? No wait, I have two questions." Her hand went back up. "Are the affects of the Fwooper's song reversible with magic?"

Olly had heard about fwoopers before, of course, but he didn't know the song could drive someone insane. Or maybe he had heard that but he'd forgotten? No it sounded like something he would have remembered. He just hadn't paid much attention to fwoopers before. It might have been the name that distracted him. It was a pretty distracting name. Fwooper. Wait it was happening again.
You needed a license to have a fwooper. That made sense to him. Olly raised his hand. "You need to have a license in order to own several different magical animals. Crups for example." He knew that because he had a crup! He did not have the license though because he was only fifteen. His dad had the license. "You have to be able to prove that you're capable of taking care of this magical animal, especially if you might live in a muggle area. Crups prefer wizards and don't like muggles very much, are fwoopers the same way? Or if you were in a muggle area you would have to keep it hidden so muggles don't get suspicious. And of course you have to properly perform the silencing charm." But others had already talked about that so he didn't have anything more to add.

Aoife did a mental air grab at her "good" answer. But oh, they weren't discussing Diricawls.
She didn't know much about Fwoopers, other than they came in pretty colours, didn't they? She glanced at the board, and obviously the only thing that indicated them to be dangerous was their song could cause insanity. Upon hearing her classmates answer, her lip pursed a bit, and she ended up asking a question instead of giving a proper answer. "Aww, is it's song really that bad? What does it sound like, professor?"Aoife sure did hope that he had a Fwooper stashed away to show the class.

Sheeeeeeesh kebabs, there were some people there that were such know-it-alls. Matt stopped himself from rolling his eyes, but he did end up shaking his head as some classmates went oon and oon and on and on about birds and ACTUALLY, Matt was going to mention Fwoopers himself and say one thing about them but they had said EVERYTHING he knew already.
Oh well. Matt shrugged and kicked his feet a little because he was starting to get bored. Again, people had already answered the question and said everything he knew. Maybe he should make a point and be quicker and louder than everyone the next time.
...
Nah. It wasn't worth it. Besides, he wanted the activity already because just talking was boooriiiing.
SO. The Gryffindor sat back and relaxed, humming the tune that kept playing in his head, sometimes even singing a little louder than just a hum because... well, 'cause he felt like it, lol.

Fwoopers. They were interesting enough, and probably a really excellent way to get rid of an enemy or someone you wanted to keep quiet. Didn't even have to hurt them, really... just let a bird loose in their yard and they'd go mad and everything. Boom. Insta-solution.
Not that Katy would do that, but it was interesting to think on. She raised her hand. "Professor, I think it's probably one of those ways the Ministry likes to exert dominance on citizens. Or maybe a politer answer is that they want to keep track of who has a fwooper and what they're being use for since they're all so dangerous to people who aren't careful."

There wasn't really anything Juno could add to the answers already given, but she did agree with them. Fwooper songs were very dangerous to humans. Kitty's question was a really good one...well two questions were both good...anyway, yeah.
Juno raised her hand and waited to be called on, "I agree with what everyone else has said. If their song is that dangerous, in order to prove that you are able to properly maintain a Fwooper, a license is a good way to prove that you are capable of doing so." She said with a shrug. She was kind of excited to see the Fwoopers...hopefully no one would go crazy.....

In all honesty...the professor's reply only had her MORE curious. Terms like 'considering' and 'magical' felt a little contradictory - they were under consideration as to whether or not they were magical? But then the professor said magical owls implying that there were nonmagical ones...so how did you tell? Was there something to be revealed with the egg before an owl was even hatched? Did that mean that owls were more like people when it came to magical blood? Could be 'muggleborn' owls? Paige's hand had shot right back up to ask for clarification...
...but he had moved on to fwoopers and discussion had already begun there so the Hufflepuff decided to drop the topic. Confused as she was. Creatures were not her forte.
As for the question being posed, wasn't it the same as every other license required in their world? To prove that one was competent and responsible enough? Although Katy's darker response also held its merit as well. Simple as the charm was, the fact that owning a fwooper came with the promise that it would be reinforced every lunar month - thirteen times a year - made them high maintenance and being able to prove your competence and hold a licence to prove said devotion as well as be used for accountability should, well, the worst happen.
But, to be honest, Paige was still too hung up on her owl theories and speculations to offer up a verbal response to this question. Her classmates had mostly touched on her thoughts as was anyway.

Natalia listened to everyone's answers. She was very interested in animals and birds was not something she was very knowledgeable about. So hearing all the many different birds she was finding already very educational. As the professor moved on and spoke more she realized they must be learning about Fwoopers she got excited as well as a little nervous. The professor would just leave the charm on it, right?
No need to drive the students fully insane today. Nope, they didn't have to go there. She was just having good days lets not ruin it with this birds song. Writing a few things down. Everyone seemed to have hit the nail on the head with their answers and everything she knew about these birds so she didn't answer and let the others have their turn.
"Ohayo, sensei." he said giving his mug a quick glance. The sudden urge to have tea came to his senses, but Jace was quick to turn around and took a seat next to Henry. The older boy got a nice grin, and slight bow of his head as Jace settled in. "Hello."
Henry grew a little bored while waiting for class to begin. Not that he had gotten there all that earlier, but he was normally a restless kid and, without having had sat next to one of his friends or without having any animals for him to look at, he zoned out a bit as he contemplated what they'd be learning today. He was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard a voice next to him.
"Oh, hey.. how's it going?" he grinned back at the boy as he turned to see who it was. Jace, he was pretty sure his name was. "So what do you think we'll be talking about today?" And would they get to handle such creature? But class was getting started, so Henry turned his attention to the professor.

Oh, types of birds? Henry wondered if they'd be talking about a specific type of bird for class and he thought about ones he knew. He thought he might know snidgets and phoenixes best, and he had raised his hand to mention something about one of them. But as the professor began calling on other students before he got to him, Henry slowly started lowering his hand back down. The ones he knew were already getting mentioned and he wasn't thinking of much more. He might have been able to come up with another fact or two, but he really didn't want to repeat an answer, so he lowered it completely as they were moving on anyway.

Pausing for a while, Jordan copied what Azura had mentioned to the blackboard and also added more information about this bird.
He underlined the statement at the bottom. "Why do you think that we must have a license to own a fwooper?" He threw the next question to the students. Was it because of the classification or something else?
So they were going to discuss fwoopers. Henry was familiar with them of course, but he had never seen one up close. Might they today? His eyes fell on the words written on the board and the brief thought that maybe he should write that stuff down flashed through his mind. Nah, he could remember it.
But why did one need to obtain a license to own one? Not having wanted a fwooper before, he never had need to think about it. But he would assume that it would be because their songs were said to induce insanity in the listener, and that the owner needed to cast a silencing charm. Didn't someone say that though? Uhh.. He raised his hand. "Maybe in addition to some of the things said, it's also to make sure someone knows how to cast a silencing charm and also knows when to cast it and renew the charm to keep it silent." Magic wore of eventually of course, and he knew that a silencing charm was pretty basic but it didn't mean that everyone could cast it. But that meant a question. "Do prospective owners take a training class to know how to care for one before they get their license?"

Fwoopers. This wasn't one of the creatures she had worked closely with but she did know her research on the bird. Research was just that though, research. It wasn't one on one with the creature for real. A true interaction with a creature was completely different then what you got from a book.
What she knew about the bird however had already been said by those around her. Therefore Hady choose to remain quiet for this question and simple took down very detailed notes. As each person listed something about the Fwooper and why it was best that only licensed individuals owned one she nodded her head in agreement. Everything being said made sense to her as she owned a license to own a Crup and that wasn't even all that dangerous of a magical creature. In fact her Sammie wasn't dangerous at all but that wasn't important to this lesson.

Azura's favourite creature!
Jace turned to where Azura was and gave her an approving grin while she answered the professor's question. He didn't have anything else to add to what the others have said about the creature so he got his parchment and self-inking quill out and scribbled away in Japanese.
But...a license to own one? Well, it is quite obvious as to why, but...there must be another reason for it? Jace paused for a moment, and slowly raised his hand to answer, "Perhaps...it's for tagging purposes professor? I imagine it would be easier for the merchant to track down the person who bought a Fwooper from his store. That way, he or she will be easier to track down if things go wrong? Or is it...to make sure that he or she won't...illegally breed it?" Ermm...oops? He really didn't mean to answer and ask a question at the same time, professor. He's just being...Jace Reed.
Jace picked his quill again and started to doodle on his parchment. Nothing to see here!

Olivia peered around at her classmate and yawned. She'd been so very tired today... she'd totally spaced out and missed that first question. Bleh. What were they talking about??..... Birds? Fwoopers, actually...
She chanced a glance at Azula. Everyone knew of her fondness for these particular creatures.
"I feel like... if anything is being regulated it's because they're dangerous. Otherwise, why regulate? So, whether it's to protect the owner of the creature...." The blonde Gryffindor paused. "Are we going to get to work with them today?"
