The crisp November evening air may cause a bit of a chill as you step inside the Astronomy classroom, but even a ghost such as Marion Burbage has made the proper arrangements to ensure that conditions are not too uncomfortable for the living. Desks remain in the usual semi circle formation that returning students have become accustomed to, and besides the festive streamers strung about the classroom and single colorful balloons tied to the backs of each chair. The ghost herself is floating in the front of the with a pleased-as-peach smile on her face as she waits for her wide-eyed and bushy tailed students to enter, the framed photo of a gentleman displayed proudly on the professor's desk.

Blaise didn't notice the Slytherin First Year who'd fallen asleep--and why would he?--but he DID the moment Professor Burbage got into her translucent feels. Airey had always been interesting in how he dealt with sleeping students and admittedly, it had left the boy curious to know how she would handle it. Point loss. Huh. The boy kept his gaze on the sky, outwardly giving very little sign he'd been paying attention to that little exchange but internally he couldn't help but sigh.
10 points? Sometimes he felt too much value was placed on such an intangible system of rewards. Couldn't very well go to Hogsmeade with the points he'd earned from the week and get himself a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Why fuss about losing them?
Blaise's full attention returned to her at the next set of instructions. Finding the stars with the same age as themselves sounded a lot like something Professor Morgan might have told them to do while she was here. Bless that woman. So nice. He was never wrong in her class. The Gryffindor's hand rose, even as he scanned the list of stars? "What will we do after finding these birthday stars?" If this drifting into anything like Astrology, he was sending Airey a strongly worded letter.

61 Ursae...Jace didn’t have to be told twice as he got up from his seat with his textbook and telescope in hand, and found a spot in one of the windows. Following his book’s instruction, Jace didn’t take long to spot the said star, and took down a quick note on why this particular star was being asked. 61 Ursae is like the point of origin, or the 0,0,0 in a plane axis where one can jump off to find the other values to pinpoint its exact location. Genius, really.
Now to find his star! The Ravenclaw opened his star chart, squinting as he did so as he pointed out the right stars. After getting an initial glimpse, he then jotted down the names and added important notes about it. He had, by the way, charmed his other parchment to record a second copy for his revision later on since he wasn’t too sure if Professor Burbage would return his work. He took a moment to review his work, and once he was satisfied, went up to place his work on the professor’s table.
How in Great Jupiter’s name would she flip through their work anyway? More importantly, how would she bring their work back to her office? “Uhm...professor? Would you like me to help you bringing these to your office?” It would only be a short distance from the classroom, and it wouldn’t be a long way from the Ravenclaw tower so he’d be quick and not miss curfew.

Dreaming nicely about hot chocolate the first year Slytherin smiled in her sleep, just when… Somebody was talking really loudly! How rude of that person! Then a cold shill crept through her and she opened her eyes startled, that she didn’t liked! Who was fooling around with her like that? Puffing her cheeks she looked up and saw the… Professor hanging before her? Oeh oeh, she was in trouble! Maybe the professor would send her out of the less, she would like that, the les was boring anyway! But… Her eyes widened only slightly while hearing her punishment and she looked angry. It wasn’t her fault that the lesson had been boring! She already opened her mouth to protest when the professor just… Ignored her? Listening to what the professor said she gritted her teeth, so she really needed to do the activity and she didn’t wanted to. She really, really didn’t wanted to!
“Stupid old ghost” she muttered darkly while thinking about something she could do to have her revenge, maybe something with the professor’s grave? Hmm…

Azura looked back at the Professor as she started talking again, she blinked a little as she heard the reason that they were looking up that specific star.. cause it was the same age as Professor Hirsch?

Huh.. that was certainly new and nothing they would have done should Professor Airey be teaching. Once again she missed her teacher and she bit her lip as she turned back to her textbook in order to find her star. She was nearly 14, in about a month or so. but still 13 right now. So 13 light years away.. ish.
She scanned her textbook and found several stars that were 13 light years away.. so she tried to narrow it down to one.. She didn't want to put all of them, so instead she got the one that was closest to 14 light years.. like herself.
She looked through her telescope to find the star she had picked and then started to write her notes

So Kitty's answer on light years and parsecs had been a little muddled. You could blame Muggle television for that. Upon further reflection Kitty realized that citing shows like Star Wars for scientific facts may not have been the best idea. Yet upon further reflection she decided that it was better to contribute a slightly wrong guess than it was to add nothing.
Speaking of which...what was with that first year Slytherin (Leesha) girl? Kitty stared at her for a few moments, wondering if she were sick. No, she didn't look sick - which made it all the more bizarre to Kitty that she would fall asleep in class. She would have been WAY too self conscience in her first year to ever even DREAM of falling asleep. And maybe it was since Kitty was a Ravenclaw that she couldn't understand how anyone could find listening to a teacher talk boring, but the lessons where you just had to sit down to listen (or read and write) and discuss were always her type of lesson. At least there was no physical danger or danger of being poisoned.
Oh well. Time to return to the lesson. Kitty averted her gaze from the younger Slytherin and began researching her star. The day after tomorrow she would be 15 so she selected OGliese 876...
"Dwarf star in Aquarius, the Water Bearer; has planets..." She read aloud.

Oh, this was a cool activity! Though, she still missed Professor Airey, Professor Burbage seemed really great! And this activity was really neat. Juno quickly pulled open her textbook and her star charts to find a star that was 15 to 16 light years away. She was going to be 16 in February so if she could find something that was 15.7 to 15.9 that would be perfect!
Luckily, she found one that was 15.9! She looked for the coordinates on her star chart, then positioned her telescope in the general area that the star should be in. Then she spotted it! It was absolutely lovely. She was really excited that she actually found it. Her birthday star! Well....her birthday star for now.
Juno found the star in her textbook, and jotted down notes about it on her parchment. As soon as she was done she rolled it up, and placed it on the Professor's Desk.

Birthday stars! That was cool... although it would be cooler if they could rename the star after themselves. Katy flipped through the textbook again, although it wasn't nearly as straightforward as the last assignment they were given. Most stars had pretty high numbers, which made you think... the light they saw from those stars had first shined years and years ago. Years and years and years. It was kind of like time traveling.
But there were a few that were basically Katy's age, and she thumbed through them until she found one she liked.

The particular star I have asked you to look for is 31 light years away...whiiiiiiiiiiich just SO happens to be the SAME as as your studmuffin of a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor making that starlight the SAME age as the man."
Wasn't that just darling? Oh ho ho hooo.
"Now, using your textbook and starcharts, I would like each of you to try and find a star with starlight the same age as yourself, meaning if you are 13 you need to find a star that is 13 light years away from our planet. Once you have found it and seen it yourself, please write it down on your parchment along with some important information - whatever you feel is significant - and set it on my desk. If you are feeling especially ambitious you may find more than one star IF possible. We will use our remaining time today for you to complete this. Keep in mind that some stars you see on your chart may not be visible with the naked eye and you will need to use your telescope to spot it. I am available for any questions you may have, dears."
Char had sort of... gotten lost in her own head. Sorry Burbage. She did catch the Blaise flirting accusation and laughed. Whaaaat was with the ghosts thinking that, huh? Sooo weird.
But the rest of what was happening.... there was a LOT of talking and Char had to concentrate to really pay attention. But she was happy to look for a star, that was okay. And since she was ALMOST/APPROXIMATELY fifteen, she would look for ALMOST/APPROXIMATELY fifteen year old starlight. It was easier in her head to think about it as the starlight than the star for sure.
After some flipping through her book and working through tables she found one. Gliese 674. Listed as 14.81 ± 0.10 light years away. Sooo that would work, right? Okay what other info could she.... oh it had a planet! Cool. She scribbled that on the parchment and then got up to get her telescope.

Char was almost ready for starlight spotting! Gliese 674 should be visible without the telescope depending on the time of year and depending on the location, right? And she coul.... oh. It was too far south to see! Ohhhh that was disappointing.
Did that mean she had to find a DIFFERENT one? But she'd been kind of enamored with this one! It was ALMOST fifteen like her! Maybe she could find another ALMOST fifteen?

With that kind of enthusiasm for the AWESOME Han Solo, Tenacius didnt care if the lady spectre wasnt a sc-fi fan-- she knew who Han Solo was and that all that matters! Thats two thumbs up in his book!
But right, it was all about parallax and light years. Light years! He knows what those are! But then it was time to move to the windows and off he goes, with his telescope and his book and looking for the 61 Ursae Majoris..... whats so important about it? He wouldnt know, because he was too busy trying to find where in the sky it was. Stargazing noob? No, he knew how to work a telescope-- he has his own out on the deck back home-- thing is, often it wasnt pointed at the sky. Ahem. Boys will be boys eh?
Oh so this star thing was as old as Professor Hirsch?? Well whaddya know, theres a star out there that is practically a Hirsch-y twin. And much to his own delight-- they get to look for stars that have the same age as they do. Cool! So whats his star twinsies?....
........ ok apparently stars arent a big thing around the time he was born, astronomical ones anyway. Because he really had to go through the list of looking for one that was about 13-14 light-years old, because he was 13 going on 14. Seems like there were more stars around his dad's age. How typical.....
--But oh! He finally found a set of stars around his-- red dwarf stars. Ok not the most exciting, if anything its the most common, and for a hot pumpin ball of fiery gas, its relatively cool-ish.
But hey he has a star twin thingy and he's pretty happy with that.
SPOILER!!: notes
Star: Wolf 1061
Distance: 13.87 light years
Location: Ophiuchus constellation
Points of interest:
Has three planets orbiting around it, one of the planets, Wolf 1061 c, is is very Earth-like in its potential to support Magical kind. (and yeah Muggles too)
the Ophiuchus constellation got its name from the Greek word for serpent-bearer (and my Dad was a Slytherin, so I think this is significant)
Ophiuchus is also called the 13th zodiac, but Astronomers like Professor Flamsteed and Astrologers like Professor Vance are forever arguing about things like this.
A guy named Wolf discovered this star. My dad's patronus is a wolf. Thats just awesome!
A Red Dwarf is also the name of a space ship from a old Muggle tv comedy.
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes

Her attention was waning now. This was hard. All the good ones seemed to be something she wouldn't be able to SEE. Charlotte sighed and listlessly turned through the pages.
......... there were a lot of stars with Gliese in front of the name. Oh hey what about Gliese 687? Would her telescope even be strong enough for that? Well, wouldn't know until she gave it a try!

Sighing dramatically because she already had lost all her interest in the lesson she took her textbook and the necessary tools to do what she was told and looked up at the sky but there were reaaaaly a lot stars! Puffing because she didn’t wanted to work hart today she looked with a sour look in her eyes at her textbook and searched for the right start. She was eleven years old so she needed to look for a star eleven light-years away. Hmm… She had found one! “Procyon” She muttered to herself while looking more intently at the chart in her textbook to see how she could find the right star but… Well… It looked really hard and again, she didn’t wanted to work hart today! It was already evening and she wanted to relax in her common room!
Taking her telescope she looked up at the sky and searched for twenty minutes before she found the star she was looking for! Ha! Satisfied that she had done it she quickly looked at the instructions what she needed to do next.
Hmm, that didn’t sounded too hart, just writing something down! That she could do… Deciding that one thing could be enough she slowly made a note about the star she had found.
Quote:
Name star: Procyon Light-year distance: eleven point four Extra information: It’s the brightest star in the constellation of Canis Minor.
What exactly Canis Minor was she didn’t knew but she was too bored to really be interested so she didn’t searched for more information about it. This must be enough she decided, she already had done more than she actually wanted! This lesson was sooooo bored! Sigh…

Oh. Well he supposed that didn't sound too horrid. Alright. Sure. Fine. A piece of the galaxy he could be connected to. The boy turned his attention back to the list of stars in his text.
There were so many that he clearly...er...shared the galaxy with. He supposed all he really had to do was pick one. Best way to do that? Random selection of course! Blaise closed his eyes and brought his finger down onto his book, opening it only after he could feel the paper beneath him.
Wolf 424, how very fitting.
The Gryffindor wasted very little time scribbling the information he found relevant onto a piece of parchment then headed for the desk the Professor could never use to drop it off.
"All yours."
SPOILER!!: Parchment
Star: Wolf 424
Constellation: Virgo
Light Years: 14.2
It's one of those systems that's got two dwarf stars in it. They're among the dimmest stars within 15 light years of the sun which is a shame really. The two stars actually orbit each other. I'm not completely sure how that works but there you have it.

She had been listening…yes she had been. Astronomy just wasn’t her strong suit so Cassie tended to do better listening, and reading outside class, then trying to guess answers. Which was why she had been quiet for the most part during the course of the lesson. The Ravenclaw having found the star in question just as Professor Burbage brought their attention back to her as she moved on with her lecture.
Stars that were the same age as them?
A cool concept…so she would have to look for one 13 years, well lightyears away from them. Cass opened up her textbook, flipping through where various stars that were considered ‘near’ were given, scanning for any one that fit the bill. Lacaille was just a little too young. Gliese was too old. But there were a handful that seemed about right. She turned her attention to the star charts to see where they might be. There was no guarantee any of them would be noticeable from where they were but she wasn’t the only 13-year-old in the room so hopefully at least one was.
First by plain sight…then by telescope.
THERE!
Wolf 1061.
Taking a clean sheet of parchment that she could turn in, Cassie wrote down what she could find about the star in question as well as trying to give her most accurate description of where she had found it.

Blinking. There was lots of it going on right now - insane amounts really - as the Hufflepuff both tried to retain SOMETHING that was being thrown at them in the cornucopia of information while also trying to follow instructions with their telescopes and finding their own birthday stars. She was...just going to try to focus on the latter of all that for now...finding a star that was 17, almost 18, light years away. Shouldn't be too difficult, yeah?
Only as her finger trace down the page she was only finding things in the 16 light year range and then jumping to 18 light years...which meant she needed to reason a little with this, yeah?
"Sigma Draconis," she read aloud, looking at the 18 light years away star first. Well...18 and nearly 19 light years away, really. As appealing as this one felt, because finding a star in association with such a strong constellation was the sort of boost she could use, it wasn't right. Which is why her blue eyes then fell on the 16, almost 17, light years away star - which she supposed was closer to her actual age and therefore a better suited fit. "Altair..." she whispered, flipping through her textbook to read up more on the particular star, finding it a bit ironic that it was a part of the constellation Aquila considering her fear of flying...but the more she read the more enthralled she became with the particular star. For reasons that, judging by how Professor Flamsteed had felt about the subject, were not suited for this particular classroom.
Quill out, Paige set to scribbling down some basic facts - keeping the more...whimsical aspects of her findings to herself.
SPOILER!!: parchment
Paige S Skeeter February 27, 2073; 17 years of age
represents the bird who carried Zeus/Jupiter's thunderbolts in Greco-Roman mythology
the twelfth brightest star in the night sky
one of the closest stars visible to the naked eye
associated with the sign Scorpio
Deciding she best turn her parchment in before she spiraled off into the Scorpio mindset, Paige duplicated her work with a wave of her wand - so she could spiral on her own back in her dormitory later - and quickly got to her feet and set the parchment on the professor's desk and then went back to her spot by the window and began packing up her things.

All the scientific lecturey stuff was a little lost on Henry but he did take his telescope and textbook with him as he got up to take a place by the window. It wasn't that the topic wasn't interesting. It very much seemed like time travel which was a really cool concept but it was also a lot of explanatory stuff that he wasn't as interested in. But he did want to try to find that star, 61 Ursae Majoris, as he did enjoy the practice of star-gazing.
It took all of his concentration and focus to find the star, using his textbook to find the coordinates and location, but he was fairly certain it was the correct one when he did. The Hufflepuff was fairly accustomed to using a telescope, after all. But.. what were they supposed to do after they found it? Henry sort of forgot and the ghostly professor was talking about something else now anyway.
Another star, this time finding one that had a similar age as his own. Considering that he would be 15 in just two months, Henry wondered if he could find one that was almost 15, or if it did have to be just 14. Flipping through his book and cross-referencing with his star-chart, Henry found a couple with the name Gliese and a different number. As he tried to decide just which one to choose, he started to wonder why there were several with the same name but different number - why not just give them a completely different name? - and just how Gliese was pronounced. Like Gleece, Glice, or Glee-ess.. or some other variation. Maybe it didn't really matter, but if it was his star, at least for the purposes of this class, he wanted to know how to say it correctly.
Deciding on Gliese 687, Henry wrote down a few semi-interesting facts about the star before he'd start looking for it. It was in the constellation Draco, which he was pretty sure was one that could be seen all year-round and that was promising. But his book did say that he would need a moderately sized telescope. Hopefully his was strong enough and he began searching the coordinates.
SPOILER!!: Henry's notes

Oh Merlin, they'd just lost points? Rula looked over at the Slytherin that Professor Burbage had scolded for falling asleep, and it looked like a much younger girl, probably a second or first year. So...Rula wasn't too upset over it. Ten points wasn't too bad anyway; they could make up those points pretty easily.
Turning back to listen, it appeared they were now looking for stars the same age as them. Okay, that sounded fun actually! That was a really neat thing to think about too. She was totally on board for this.
Skimming over the pages, she searched for one that was 15 - practically almost 16! - light years. There appeared to be a few, but nothing really caught her attention at first...
Why were star names so boring? Why didn't they have pretty or cool names like the planets in their solar system did? There was nothing interesting about just a random bunch of letters and numbers.
But then one finally jumped out at her that had a somewhat interesting name - Groombridge 1618. Groombridge sounded like a cool word. And it was around 15 light years away, so it worked.
Flipping through some more pages in her textbook to find out more about it, she wrote down whatever sounded interesting or important to her.
Text Cut: Rula's parchment
Rula Botros Age: 15
Star: Groombridge 1618 Light years: 15.848
Groombridge 1618 is in the Ursa Major constellation. It got its name from Stephen Groombridge, who wrote about it in his book A Catalog of Circumpolar Stars. It was entry number 1618 in the book, so I guess that's why it has that number in its name. It has an orange-red color, is a dwarf star, and is also a flare star.
That seemed like enough, right? Looked good to her at least, because a lot of the other information had a lot of numbers in it, and she didn't feel like writing all those down.
So now, after she set the parchment on Professor Burbage's desk with the others, she could look for it. Shouldn't be too hard since it was in the same constellation as the other star they'd looked for, right?

Oh ho ho ho and part of the constellation Ophiuchus!
And yes, another warm smile to you, Azura. Thank you, darling.
OOC: no more than 24 hours left, my dears, to get in your star viewing posts.
Olivia was giving Professor Burbage her undivided attention, which was VERY difficult given that she really wanted a chocolate chip cookie, and maybe a spot of that wonderful Gryffindor tea Professor Newton had created. Gryffindors and food, you know. They just went hand in hand.... Like peanut butter and jelly.
Man, she was hungry.... which was probably more than obvious, given the way her stomach was screaming. Screaming.... growling? Same thing. It was being LOUD.
"Thank you for helping me." It was simply polite to say as much, and Liv toted her telescope back over to the tower window afterward; trying to track down her very own birthday star. Professor Burbage had suggested number 36 on the star chart... named Wolf 1061. Huh, WOLF. Like... haha, when she used to be in the Wolfpack. The ONLY girl, which was the highest of the esteemed honors, mind. But no thinking about that right now. It only made her sad how far she'd fallen out with her closest friend.
Was that it? Peering through her telescope, Liv thought it might've been...
Huh. It was so hard to say. UGH. THIS WAS A HARD FLIPPING SUBJECT. How did you know if you were looking at the RIGHT star. There were literally MILLIONS...
Eh.... Filling out her parchment with facts she'd gotten from the textbook, she trekked back towards her desk, dropping the parchment for Professor Burbage.... Actually, how the heck did ghosts grade papers? Did they get assistance from other professors? Student leaders? It was a stray thought, but one that would plague the blonde well into the next lesson block.

The good thing about this Gliese was like the first Gliese she had looked at, it had an exoplanet, soooo she could just go ahead and use that original fact, with just changing the number accordingly.
Finding it though, that was harder. Charlotte spent a few more minutes looking before giving up. She wasn't inclined to pretend she'd found it when she hadn't though.
"Professor Burbage I can't find my star!" She said cheerfully, even as she put the parchment down on the desk. But she'd found out a thing about it, at least! And she was almost out of time, right? So maybe she could look for it later?
