The crisp November evening air may cause a bit of a chill as you step inside the Astronomy classroom, but even a ghost such as Marion Burbage has made the proper arrangements to ensure that conditions are not too uncomfortable for the living. Desks remain in the usual semi circle formation that returning students have become accustomed to, and besides the festive streamers strung about the classroom and single colorful balloons tied to the backs of each chair. The ghost herself is floating in the front of the with a pleased-as-peach smile on her face as she waits for her wide-eyed and bushy tailed students to enter, the framed photo of a gentleman displayed proudly on the professor's desk.

The Ravenclaw grinned at Azura in thanks for the Bluebell Flame. And as he did so, Jace caught Jasper’s expression this time, and knew immediately that he’d made a huge mistake by saying the word studmuffin. What? Is it a bad thing to say? Is it not...another term of endearment? It looks like Professor Burbage loves the guy to bits...so it shouldn’t be so bad, right?
He’d have to ask Jakub about it later. He was sure his brother would know.
Head snapping back at the professor, Jace gave the woman a polite nod, and stood up to write Mr. Studmuffin’s real name on the board. The Ravenclaw wrote it quickly but legibly since he has to take down his own notes for today’s lesson, seeing that the ghost professor can’t write things down on her own by hand or magic.
Jace returned to his seat quietly and started to jot down notes instead of doing their little experiment. He’d already figure that bit by reading his Astronomy book; so instead, he made a few more notes in Japanese to aide him in his revisions later on: Stellar Parallax.
Opting not to answer this time, Jace instead recorded Charlotte’s answer but gave it a bit of correction in his notes: 'Distance to Stars and other Heavenly Bodies is called Parsecs, or PARallax ArcSECond.'

He thanked Char for the bluebell flame with a grateful grin. Although if she actually tossed one at him, what would've happened eh? Guess they'll never know….
And well his answer wasn’t wrong, which was GREAT because he had no clue who the old gent was, and upon listening to the class he realized how FAR OFF his thoughts were. So the dude was some egghead that measured stuff and named that stuff on his own. Great! Where the heck did Green Lantern come up with Parallax anywho?
But oh activity time-- or sorta. They get to stretch see? Arms out in front like the Professor say, thumbs up, winky wink winky wink… yeah lengthy explanation but it made sense to him. Because explanation plus demo equals total win yeah!
But of course he cant help but notice everybody else doing what he's doing. And he just couldn’t help either when he GUFFAWED at the sight of them. People looked like they were flirting at the beach or trying to hitch a ride with the wind in their eyes. Bahahahahahahaha!
Next question. NO CLUE either-- too busy laughing to even think. Although Char yelled out parsecs. Oh so they're going from Green Lantern to Star Wars now? "Han Solo owns a ship that can do that." Probably an erroneous use of parsec, but that’s what he knows and that’s what he can share.
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes

Azura smiled over at her friends as they thanked her for the bluebell flames. She was just doing what she needed to keep her friends warm. She listened carefully to the Professor as she spoke and she smiled as she did the exercise that she had them do..
Huh.. it seemed like a simple concept, but to apply it to the stars.. That was brilliant!
She titled her head at the next question and was about to answer but Char answered first!
So instead she wrote the information down in her notes. Her guess had been light years, but that was the speed of light..not the distance between things..
Right?
Her hand raised though to ask her question. "Professor, what's the difference between light years and a parsec?" She asked her. Hoping that it wasn't dumb or anything.
Leesha stared stunned at the ghost/ahem, professor while she was talking and her mouth had almost dropped open AGAIN! It always happened during this lesson, no matter how often se had been in this lesson before, she never quite was able to follow the professor. This lesson was just so… Not her style! She understood what the professor showed them with their small practice but the rest? Hmm, Nope, already during the first question Leesha was lost and didn’t knew how to answer so she just leaned on her elbows while staring at the professor.

Parsecs. Fine. New term. Katy should probably write it down, along with all the notes she'd taken on how the dead guy was neither a hedgehog nor a ghost, but she was busy. She was busy, and everyone had already said the answer already.
So she'd just continue holding her thumbs up in front of her face and closing one eye. And then the other. One eye. The other.

"Hey," Paige whispered back sheepishly as she got her textbook and flipped it open. She would definitely be needing the use of it during the lesson...which was beginning now and the seventh year was just...going to hold on to her quill, tickle her nose every now and then, and try to keep up with note taking as best she could.
Quill moving furiously over the parchment, trying to write word for word what Professor Burbage was saying about Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel - including writing the word 'studmuffin' more times than she would realize until she went over her notes back in her dorm later that evening - because she hadn't a clue who he was based on portrait alone. Not offer up any additional information on the man. Well, not unless she became a true master of multitasking and were able to take notes AND flip through the pages of her textbook at the same time. She had literally just finished with notes and was turning towards the page about Bessel when ANOTHER question was being asked.
Again...not a clue...which was why she sheepishly began reading over the page on this particular astronomer and cross referencing her notes.
...to the discovery of Neptune in 1846 at Berlin Observatory....after Bessel's death...
Something about the fact the Brian of all people had brought up Neptune's discovery within this context struck a cord with her. At least there was a small distraction with this thumb business...which actually made the concept make a bit more sense to the Hufflepuff. But only just a bit.
And it was back to notes with the next question as well. Although she DID know what a light year was at least! That brought a faint smile to her features...even if it apparently was not the correct response. Why weren't astronomy terms as easy to remember as binomial names in Herbology?

Rula didn't know who the "studmuffin" was, so she definitely didn't know any extra information about him. She did jot down a lot of notes as she listened though - who knew what parts of this would be on her OWL? - and she participated with the others for the parallax demonstration with their thumbs. Which was kind of neat and definitely helped her understand a little better.
The next question she didn't know the answer to either, but that was okay since Char had already offered the answer. Rula scribbled that down and then waited to take more notes until Professor Burbage would elaborate on it. Since she probably would.
But at least this fifth year's hand could take a break from note-taking for a little bit.

Notes. SOOOOO. Many. Notes.
... But Olivia was paying attention, and that was really all that could be expected of her. No, she might not have known answers (or been able to contribute much to the general classroom discussion), but she was open to learning. So, perhaps her usually bouncy mood was best left out of this subject matter. It left for more time to focus ON the professor, than on everyone (her friends, namely) around her.
Also, not going to lie... A studmuffin sounded like a delicious pastry, reminding Liv that she was, indeed, very hungry. Just one more thing to add to her growing list for the day, really...
Lifting her arms, she adjusted her thumb and distance accordingly, going along with the others in this mini!experiment. It was interesting that something like this could aid in the explanation of something so... er, out of her wheelhouse. It didn't exactly give her insta!knowledge, but it was more than she knew beforehand. Also, it kinda gave her a headache.
Also, Princess Azula had a very good question. Everyone had heard the term 'lightyears' as some point in their life. Especially if you watched as much muggle television as she did. So, Liv tuned in, poised to write down the answer as soon as it was given.

For once, Livvy had seemed as unenthused about a lesson as he did--if her grunt was anything to go off of. A grunt. Did he grunt back...? Was this a thing now? In the end, the boy settled for a friendly nod before his attention returned to the ghost and the picture Charlotte (no surprise there) already knew about. What in Merlin's bloody beard was a parallax guy and how even was it a thing?
Studmuffin too?
It took everything in the boy not to raise his hand and ask if they'd get points for writing that in their exams. If they couldn't, there was no point dangling it in front of them like that. Really though, Blaise had no idea who that guy might have been, leaving him little choice but to have his quill take notes on any and everything his classmates might otherwise have had to add.
Parallax, honestly. Who named these people?
As it turned out, Livvy was having growing pains and Parallax man had a proper name; Freiedrich Bessel. Go figure. The boy leaned over to check that his quill had gotten that, adamantly or perhaps defiantly refusing the idea of bluebell flames; casting them in particular. Didn't matter that Char was offering to make them. It wasn't that cold, honestly. It felt fine to him. The flame would only make him toasty.
Blaise's attention snapped from the flames to the Professor when she gave the instruction to have their hands up. Yes, up, his were up...aaaannnddd...stretched out in front of himself. Thumbs up, lots of squinting from one eye to the next. He wasn't sure where this was going, if he was being honest, until she told them to move their thumbs closer and do it again. Granted, he STILL didn't know where this was going but it was a neat trick nonetheless.
By the time the demonstration was done, Blaise's attention span refused to suffer the block of explanation that followed. Yet another thing he would let his quill take down. There was really only SO MUCH embellishing this thing could do. He was sure he'd still understand it and be able to transfer it to proper notes by putting it into his own words. The boy found that helped him to learn and remember.
"Professor at this point I'm willing to say that if Char says it then it's the right answer." Parsecs? Sure. That could be the answer--because Char said it and he'd never seen her wrong in a class. Of course he didn't attend Charms OR Transfiguration so those were sketchy but everything else. Mhm.

Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel. So that was the name of the dashing gentleman with green hair. Kitty wrote it down in her notebook along with a note: Need to research this guy in the library later. Then the lesson had moved on.
Stretching her arms over her head and closing her right eye and looking up her thumb - surely Kitty wouldn't have been caught dead in this position if she were the only doing it, but it was less embarrassing with all them at once. With all of them doing this at once it seemed like they were taking part in a Muggle mediation class, not that Kitty had ever been in one - but that's it looked like from movies she saw.
The question of the correct terminology of distance between stars on the galactic scale was something Kitty thought she was well prepared for. "Perhaps in the wizarding world there is a different word for it, but in the Muggle world 'light years' is the common terminology - also known as parsecs."
Katerina was starting to think that her dislike for astromony or her failure at it had nothing to do with Professor live long and prosper, it was completely her. Other than the bluebell flame the Hufflepuff was lost. Conjuring her own bluebell flame, since that was the only thing she knew she could do.
She had know idea who that guy in the picture was. By the way Kat didn't think the dude was much of a studmuffin. Nope. She was sitting beside one possibly... no who was she kidding. He was. She tried not to do too much inner flailing. This was the best part of the whole class right now.
Wait... she knew this answer No nevermind or did she. She raised her hand and nearly fell right out of her seat. "Lightyears? Ugh she should just sit quietly and take notes if the right answers. Maybe that would help.

Slowly accustomising himself to the way that the ghost was speaking to them, Jasper had quickly scrawled down his notes, trying to make sure that he got any important information that the ghost was saying. Thankfully, courtesy to Jace being a successful Ravenclaw, he'd already had the heading of the Astronomers name.
Tilting his head to the side, Jasper raised both of his hand up, keeping thumbs pointed at the ceiling as directed. He started by closing his right eye, then switched, and switched, and switched.
About 10 seconds later he put his hands down, no longer intrigued by the movement that he saw. He was wondering whether he could somehow display that in a piece of art thought.
That'd be an interesting project to work on.
Quickly he went back to scrawling notes of Parallax Arcseconds, though he didn't understand what he was writing... maybe he could ask Jace later. Jace seemed to understand what this was.
Staring blankly at Professor Burbage when she asked her question he waited for her to confirm that someone's answer was correct, so that he could write down the right thing in his notes.
so TERRIBLE sorry for the delay, dears. And for just addressing some of you

WHICH had been the answer she had been aiming for, but her bumbling mind...hohoho OOPSIES!
"Also true, my dear an CLEARLY I need to do a bit of clarification as I have bewildered a few of you."
Again...oopsies?
"DOOOOOOOOOOO forgive me tears. My poor wording has caused a bit of confusion. Please permit me to go into a bit of detail...all of which can also be found in your textbooks should you require a bit of revision later," she began. "A light year is the distance light travels in a year which is about 9.5 trillion kilometers given that we knooooooooow light travels about 300,000 kilometers every second and there are about 31.56 million seconds in a year. Now...a parsec is far more complicated than that..." And SURELY she would lose a few of them as she explained, poor dears. "A circle can be divided into 360º, and each degree can be further divided into 60 arcminutes, and each arcminute can be divided into 60 arcseconds... in astronomy, we use small angles to talk about sizes and distances against the background of the sky. As Earth revolves around the Sun, we see distant stars from slightly different angles. In January a star might appear to be in one position, but six months later its apparent position has changed. This is called a parallax shift - WHICH is precisely what you all just demonstrated moments ago with your thumbs and closing one eye. A parallax second, or parsec, is the distance a star would have to be from Earth in order for it to appear to move by one arcsecond due to our viewing it from different sides of Earth's orbit. If you do the geometry right, you'll find that a parsec is equal to about 3.26 light years. So if the galaxy is about 100,000 light years across, it's about 31,000 parsecs across." LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG PAUSE. "Now, as Miss Valentine suggested, they are often seen as being interchangeable...and it IS true that astronomy books written for amateurs almost always use light years, but professional literature frequently uses parsecs."
ANOTHER LOOOOOOOOOONG PAUSE.
"Unless there are more questions, I would like to move on. Everyone...telescopes out and take position by a window," she chirped while floating towards the nearest one herself. "Please bring your textbooks with you as well. I would like you all to find a star for me...61 Ursae Majoris...you MAY be able to see it with the unaided eye...but if not please use your telescope. Star charts are in your textbooks to assist you. Once you have found it, please tell me ONE little nugget of information about it and perhaps WHY you think I asked you to find this particular star."
She would bet 10000000 galleons that none of them would be able to guess though. HO HO HO!

Juno wasn't a hundred percent sure on this one but she raised her hand anyway. When she was called on she replied, "I believe that would be a Parsec, Professor." She was pretty sure that was it.
When she heard other people say Parsec and light-years, she was pretty it was the former. But she would wait to see what the professor said.
Hah! She was right it was a Parsec afterall!
Juno quickly grabbed a telescope and found an open area to set up. Once she was set up, she turned to the page in her textbook about 61 Ursae to look at the star chart so that she could properly find the star. She re-positioned her telescope to the area in the sky that 61 Ursae should be. She knew from looking in her text that it would be an orange-yellow color.
It took a little time, but she finally spotted the star. She quickly raised her hand and waited to be called on. When she was, she replied. "We know that 61 Ursae is smaller than our sun." Yep. That was pretty much what she knew....other than the color.

Reason: OOPS! I didn't refresh before i posted -__- so catching up and answering.
Blah blah blaaaaah! That was what Leesha was hearing while trying to listen what was being said. She absolutely remembered again why she always had so much trouble with her homework, this lesson was so boring! Sighing out loud she closed her eyes for a few minutes, it was already dark outside after all and she wished to be back in her common room, nice before the fireplace with a nice hot chocolatemilk...
The sounds of the classroom faded and she fell asleep, just when everybody started moving.

Aahh! They had finally got to the bit that Hattie was excited about! Harriet loved looking at stars. Star gazing was amazing. But she was really excited to learn more about looking at them properly. That was why Harriet literally jumped up onto her feet, and practically skipped after the Professor with her telescope. She was really excited to see a star!
She set up her telescope, and listened to the Professor. She didn't want to get it wrong. Smiling, she began to look for the star. It took a good few minutes to find it. She wasn't too used to this yet, she was only a second year. But she soon found it. "ooooh...." And she liked it. But now she needed to think of a fact. She did have a little sneaky look in her text book. That was the best place to find out information after all
Smiling, Hattie put her hand up in her air. "This star has served as one of the stable anchors by which other stars are classified" So that meant it helped classify other stars. That was pretty cool. "And....did you want us to look at it because of that? Cause it's kinda important?" She wasn't sure really, but she'd given it a go.

Ohh! Her question had gotten answered. She was happy about that.. and now she sorta knew the difference between Light years and Parsecs.. Sorta.. She had scribbled down as much as she could on her notes.. but she might have to come back later and ask the Ghost for more information.. Just to make sure it really sunk in..
She smiled as they were instructed to go over and find a certain star.. So she moved over to a window and grabbed a telescope and then set it up and then.. The third year flipped through her text book to try and find exactly where they star was..
Ahh.. There it was..
She looked back at the Professor as she spoke and she raised her hand.. "I know it's in the Ursa Major Constellation which also has the Big Dipper in it." She said with a nod as she bit her lip a little as she wondered why the Professor had asked them to find this star Specifically. Though Hattie spoke up before Azura had a chance to speak again.. That sounded like a good answer..Though Az had another one.. she hoped.. "It doesn't have any stars that orbit it?" Ohh.. Was it lonely?
What.... wait? She was right? She was right. She was so confused by the professors question though, AND she still got the answer right. Maybe she wasn't as terrible as she thought she was. She did know her stuff. Stars moons everything!
As soon as the professor told them to get up Kat was up on her feet. It had been killing her sitting and being cold .At lease now she could get up and get warm. She bounced by her desk to get warm again, tighten up her sweater, grabbed her textbook and telescope. Joining the others, she tried to find it with her bare eye. Nothing, maybe just a tiny speck. Maybe not even that much. Setting up her telescope, she took a look. THERE IT WAS! Thinking about what her reply was going to be, they were just talking about lightyears. So maybe... "Is it because its so far away that its barely noticeable with the naked eye?'

Er.........No doubt his quill had taken that down but it was the lesser of his concerns. "I'm not flirting Char, Professor........" What even? "She's my friend and she knows things in class." Just gonna.....eye the ghost for a little longer. First the Friar and now her. Sweet Merlin.
He wished he could say it was enough to distract him from the explanation that followed but he'd only be lying. The idea had already left his mind and the Professor's words STILL weren't readily accepted. More technical stuff he'd have to review later. Good thing his quill was taking notes. The boy had never been one to swallow blocks of information whole.
At the end of it, Blaise grabbed his telescope and made for a window. Text laid before him, he got to looking. "You've got a soft spot for bears?" Seemed as legit as anything else. It was just a star.

Katy wasn't immediately familiar with 61 Ursae Majoris, but she WAS familiar with how text books worked. She grabbed a telescope near bestie!Kat and flipped through the textbook in search of... 61... Ursae... thingy. Did that mean there were 60 previous Ursae thingies? How many were there total?
Ah, there it was. Katy shifted her telescope slightly to point it in the right direction and took a squint through the lens. Star. Got it. And back to the book. "Professor Gho... Burbage? Like what Hattie was saying, 61 Ursae Majoris is sort of like the spectrum baseline that other stars are measured against."

Olivia, who had honestly been zoning out (sorry Professor), sat up abruptly when her booming voice accused Blaise of flirting with Char. Hehe, sorry Blaise... but this was kinda funny. And listening to her friend trying to defend himself made it leagues funnier. Doth thou protest too much, Bellaire? DOTH THOU?!
She smothered her giggles, returning once more to the ridiculously long notes she'd been forced into writing. Merlin, could they just get on with it, then? Astronomy wasn't all about science stuffs. WHERE WAS THE MYSTIC? Merlin, she'd read books, you know? This simply couldn't have been everything there was...
Meh, it hurt her brain.
Also, her knees. More walking and standing? Really, professor? Olivia grumped, digging her telescope out of her bag... before trudging (regrettably) towards one of the tall windows lining the walls. Also with book in hand, she looked up the recommended star chart, peering up into the quiet night sky thoughtfully. She was still very annoyed, mind. It was just that Astronomy was super difficult, and it frustrated her because she wanted to do well in all the lessons this year. Paired with stupid growing pains, she just wasn't in the best mindset for this lesson. Or subject. Ever.

"True indeed, dear," Marion nodded.

"A VEEEEEEEEERY good point, my dear," the ghost applauded. LOUDLY. "Certainly an important little nugget of information for ALL to take away from this little observation."

That was so sad..
"Mmmmhmmmm true statements," she replied with an encouraging nod.

"It's diiiiiiiiiiistance is certainly significant," she giiiiiiiiggled. A bit TOO profusely really. "Speciiiiiiifically when it comes to light years."

Not flirting? HMMMMMMMMMMM. Marion would silently beg to differ, but not call out the young man further.
"Oooooooh I suppose in a SENSE I doooooooo," she beamed, remembering her dearly beloved husband in his prime.

"Mmmhmm. That IS a very important bit of information to latch on to." And in any normal lesson would be THE thing to hold on to, but things were just a tiny bit abstract today. Abstract and a bit light and therefore...

The sounds of the classroom faded and she fell asleep, just when everybody started moving.
...................................
WELL, OF ALL THE NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERVE!
Marion prided herself on being an understanding spirit, but such RUDENESS would NOT be tolerated in her classroom.
Huffing and puffing and gliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiding through the air quickly towards the Slytherin, the ghost wiggled and jiggled in annoyance for a moment before opening her mouth.
"EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE YOU," she fussed, decided that THE best way to wake the girl on her own was to just pass riiiiiiiiiight through her and give her a bit of a chill. "That will be 10 points from Slytherin for such RUDE behavior as to fall asleep in the MIDDLE of class."
There was also some flapping of the arms like a hen fending off a fox from her chicks occurring.
"Now if you are quite DONE," she fussed some more, turning her attention to those ACTIVELY participating. "Let us ALL continue." She paused to clear her throat. "All very good points, my dears. "As we have been discussing, astronomers use both parsecs and light years to measure the distance of stars and it is thanks to our studmuffin of the day that light year measurements were even fathomable. Now, as already said, one light year is the distance light travels in one year. Theeeeeeerefore if you look at a star ten light years from Earth, the light you see from it left ten years ago making that star ten years old. The particular star I have asked you to look for is 31 light years away...whiiiiiiiiiiich just SO happens to be the SAME as as your studmuffin of a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor making that starlight the SAME age as the man."
Wasn't that just darling? Oh ho ho hooo.
"Now, using your textbook and starcharts, I would like each of you to try and find a star with starlight the same age as yourself, meaning if you are 13 you need to find a star that is 13 light years away from our planet. Once you have found it and seen it yourself, please write it down on your parchment along with some important information - whatever you feel is significant - and set it on my desk. If you are feeling especially ambitious you may find more than one star IF possible. We will use our remaining time today for you to complete this. Keep in mind that some stars you see on your chart may not be visible with the naked eye and you will need to use your telescope to spot it. I am available for any questions you may have, dears."

Hattie just beamed as the Professor talked. She was happy that she had kind of been right. She was especially happy since she hadn't really known about the star. But she would do some night time reading about astronomy, so that for the next lesson she would know more! That was important. She wanted to learn as much as possible
But onto the next task. She was really excited about this! To find a star that was the same starlight age as herself. So she was finding a star that was 12 years old. That couldn't be too hard right? Or at least she was hoping that it woudn't be. She was excited about finding a star. Stars were cool.
Harriet began by looking in her textbook. So that she could find a star that was 12 years old like she was. She leant in pretty close to the book, so she could concentrate really hard on it. So there was Tau Ceti which was 11.9 light years away, which she figured kind of made the star 12 years old. She double checked to make sure there were no other stars before she picked that one, but she decided to go with that one. Before looking for the star Hattie began to write her notes down
SPOILER!!: Hattie's notes
My age is 12 so the star I'm looking for is also 12.
Name: Tau Ceti Light years away: 11.9 (so basically 12)
Important information
First star to be looked at by radio astronmers searching for signals from intelligent life. They found nothing
Has a magnitude of 3.5
Similar to the sun, but smaller.
As it's only 12 light years away is quite close to our solar system
Closest g-class star to us.
Happy with her notes, Harriet moved on to looking for the star. She began by trying to spot it with her naked eye, since it was pretty close. But she wasn't sure it would work, but she gave it a try for now.
