It's morning, but Rosalyn is wide awake and ready to start her lesson. Probably would have been worse if class was super early, but by now she had her coffee and feeling quite refreshed and energetic. Now all she needed was for her students to start arriving!
Sitting at her desk, she waits patiently. There is a plate of brownies laid out in front of her. These are for the students. By now they were used to her having snacks for them since she did this every lesson.
OOC: Hello, everyone! I will be starting my lesson in approximately 24 hours. Maybe a little later since I know it's American Thanksgiving. Feel free to chat among yourselves until class begins! LESSON HAS STARTED! No more arrivals. Please note that unless you want to suffer IC consequences it is best to pretend that you have been here for the entire time.

History of Magic was not necessarily Olly's best subject, but he wasn't always horrible at it. His dads were both wizards so they'd taught him a bit of history growing up. And while he didn't always pay attention to every bit of information that crossed his path, he picked some things up and did his best to pay attention in class. This was one question that he actually felt fairly confident about. He'd definitely heard the name Albus Dumbledore and knew a few things about him too.
"He was a former Headmaster of Hogwarts." Everybody knew that. He had not known, however, that he had started as a Transfiguration professor. "He was involved in a famous duel with the dark wizard Grindewald." Those were the biggest bits of information he knew.
Kat listened, it was like she was a complete expert on Albus Dumbledore. She wasn't. So She was just taking notes for now. Watching and listening to the other students. Doodling in her notebook.
Once all of the answers, or most of the answers that she knew were said. The third year raised her hand "Albus Dumbledore worked with Nicolas Flamel in alchemy."

Jacob raised his hand. Even overseas, Albus Dumbledore had quite the reputation. "If I recall correctly, Professor, he owned a phoenix," he said. He'd read that recently. That phoenix -- Fawkes, he thought -- had come to Harry Potter's aid in the Chamber of Secrets. Jacob wished he could have seen that... Although the other parts of the story sounded a bit scary, if he were being honest.

Rula was momentarily distracted from listening to the other students' answers when some boy said Dumbledore was the best headmaster. Um, no. Nooooope. There was CLEARLY a much better, more recent Headmaster candidate for that title. Not that she was biased or anything. Ahem.
But anyway.
She raised her hand. "He also discovered twelve uses for dragon's blood."

Wonderful, just wonderful!
Rosalyn was VERY pleased with her students for their knowledge of Albus Dumbledore! Even though this was a subject that some knew a lot about, she felt that it was important that they learned more about the person who was considered to be one of the greatest - if not THE greatest - wizard of all time! "Very well done, everyone!" Smiling, she turned her attention to the board so that she could start writing this stuff down. Best to group things together so that it was easier for everyone to follow!
Feeling that her hand was going to end up cramping up, she started off recording things down in the Muggle way:
Quote:
- Sorted into Gryffindor
-Considered the most powerful wizard of all time
-Only wizard Lord voldemort feared
-Taught Transfiguration for a time
- Headmaster at Hogwarts for a long time (considered by some to be the greatest)
-Headmaster of Harry Potter
-Helped train Harry Potter to defeat Lord Voldemort
-Always thought the best of his students
- Studied Deathly Hallows with Grindelwald at a young age to find immortality (became enemies)
-Famous duel with Grindelwald
-Defeated Grindelwald in 1945
-Founded Order of the Phoenix
-Owned a phoenix
-Worked in alchemy
-Discovered 12 uses of dragon's blood
-Enjoyed knitting patterns
-On a Chocolate Frog card
-All three Deathly Hallows passed through his hands (not all at the same time) so didn't master death
-Killed by Severus Snape under his own orders in 1997
-Lived to be 115
There! Her hand was starting to hurt, but Rosalyn was sure that she had managed to get everything down. She would feel bad if she had accidentally missed something that one of her students had mentioned!
She turned her attention back to the class. "Okay, so we have quite an impressive list so far. I won't get TOO much further into things here since there is A LOT of information on Dumbledore and I don't have the time to cover everything during this lesson." Not if they were going to do an activity that is. Besides no one wanted to be barraged with a lot of information at once. She knew what that was like because she had been a student at Hogwarts once upon a time!
"Albus Dumbledore was born in the summer of 1881 in a place called Mould-on-the-Wold. That's a mainly wizarding village in England." One with a strange name, but that was besides the point. "His younger years were marked by the tragedy of his younger sister, Ariana, was attacked by a group of muggle boys who were frightened when they had seen her performing magic. This event left her both mentally and emotionally scarred and her magical abilities were greatly effected by it. Dumbledore's father went looking for personal justice and was sent to in Azkaban where he ended up dying. He hadn't wanted to name why he had attacked the boys as it would have led to his daughter being taken away.""Dumbledore moved to Godric's Hallow and never mentioned his father and sister around others." Tragic stuff that she didn't want to dwell on for too long, but she felt that it was important for them to know about this because it had a big impact on his life. Childhood was an important part of development.
Rosalyn looked at her watch and saw that they were running lower on time. She needed to move on to the next question if they were going to have time for the activity!
"Now you guys did a great job covering a lot of stuff from his time after graduation and his history with Grindelwald. I would love to do a lesson covering his relationship with Dumbledore at some point so I won't go into it further at the moment." She was just pleased that some of her students knew about it. "Also great job covering some of the information on the Deathly Hallows! That is another topic that I would love to teach exclusively at another time." Sadly classes could only be so long!
Time to move forward!
"I have a couple more questions though you only need answer ONE of them unless you want to do both." Rosalyn wasn't going to stop them if they wanted to contribute! She loved hearing what her students thought about these matters. "Now as you can see Dumbledore has made quite a few accomplishments." Just look at the board because it listed them! "What do you feel was his greatest one as far as impacting generations after his time and WHY do you feel that way?" That was the first question, now for the second one: "Knowing Dumbledore's mentor relationship with Harry Potter, do you think that he was right to hide information from the boy the way that he did?"
OOC: Great job, everyone. Loving the answers. I am so sorry if I missed anything but I did try my best to include everything. As Rosalyn said you only need to answer ONE of the questions unless you feel that you would like to do both! This is just to generate more thought in the lesson! Once again I will be posting in approximately 24 hours.

Azura was quiet as she listened about Dumbledore, he was one of her favorite people in History, Harry Poter and the Weaeys were her others.. She always wondered what it would have been like to have such a large magical family, so many brothers and sisters all in the same house.
The fourteen year old snapped from her thoughts as she heard the questions and she decided to answer the second one. Dumbledore had Fwoopers knew how many accomplishments and there was no way she could pick just one.
Azura raised her hand and spoke.
"I agree with his decision to keep things from Harry, I feel like he was trying to protect him, not to mention wait until he was old enough to handle all of the information he knew. Parents try to protect us in different ways, I feel that was what Dumbledore was doing. Even if it was a bit selfish. "
Her mind flew to her own mom, but she pushed that thought away for now.

Yep thats a mighty impressive list of accomplishments right there, which made this young Lion cub mighty proud and also a tad bit overwhelmed for his fellow Gryffindor. So which among those had the greatest impact for generations to come?
His bright blue-green peepers strayed on the 3rd point. The only guy Voldemort feared. But there wouldnt even be a Voldemort if not for Dumbledore isnt it? A sad realization dawned on him. So the Curly Top raised a tentative hand, not really thrilled to have to point this out "Professor, I think Headmaster Dumbledore's most impactful contribution to the Wizarding World is actually discovering Voldemort. I mean... if he didnt find him in that orphanage, paving the way for Tom Riddle to study in Hogwarts... maybe we wouldnt even have had a Voldemort..... And Harry Potter would still have his parents and wouldnt have to live with those cruel Dursleys."
Which now he realizes why Dumbledore valued Harry as such-- he was trying to correct his own mistakes.... by using the life of another. Sheesh suddenly the ol Headmaster wasnt as heroic as he thought he was a few minutes ago. So given the Professor's next question-- "Uhm well.... he was trying to take down the monster he helped create, so I guess I can see why he didnt say anything to Harry, because hey if my hero said he needs help and that it would likely cost me my life-- even I would have second thoughts.... " and Tenacius was as Gryffindor as they come. "So Dumbledore keeping his cards close to his vest makes a lot of sense strategically in the war with Voldemort."
But wait he's not done yet "Ethically though-- that was a dastardly move by Dumbledore to keep Harry in the dark. I mean sure they really REALLY need to end Voldemort once and for all, but yeah... that was just nasty and I dont like it."
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes

Natalia had been listening, she had, but she hadn't been talking. This topic wasn't one she was fully up to date on. She knew who Dumbledore was, she knew what he was about. She had read all the books, even in Australia they touched on him in the greatest wizards of all times, but still she didn't have much to say on the topic since the more local students seemed to be experts on it.
Instead she listened and she doodled on her parchment. Glancing around the room and listening as students talked about his huge accomplishments and how great he was she wished she could go back in time to meet the man. See what hew as truly like. Sometimes history had a way of changing when written down. Depending on the persons view who was writing it. Was anything ever truly unbiased?
When the class was asked though if he was in the wrong Nat did have an opinion on that, "Professor, I think it was horribly wrong. You should never keep people in the dark and almost lie to them. I get it was to save so many other people, but to lie to someone isn't right. If he knew more information maybe he could have been more helpful or trained better." She didn't know the real answer to how it could have been better or worse, but one of her biggest pet peeves was lying and hiding things even is she herself had done it before.

His most impactful accomplishment? How could anyone even begin to rank them? Albus Dumbledore had done a lot of things. Olly carefully read over the list, some of which he'd already known but some of it was completely new to him. His defeat of Grindewald had definitely had a great impact on the wizarding world, otherwise who knows what else the dark wizard could have done? But was it the greatest thing Dumbledore had ever done? Finally Olly settled on something and raised his hand. "I think one of the most important things he did was create the Order of the Phoenix. Without them Voldemort would probably have been even more powerful and done more damage and even been in power longer. But we can't say for sure someone else wouldn't have founded it if Dumbledore hadn't."
Once Oliver was done speaking, he reached over and tapped Juno on the shoulder lightly and waved at her with a big smile on his face. Though they didn't hang out much, he really enjoyed being Juno's friend. She was great.
Then Oliver wrote down notes on what everyone was saying and made a list similar to the one the professor had on the board. Everything people were saying was much better than his lame ol' fact, but oh well. He would just have to do better next time. Although maybe next time wouldn't be for the next questions being asked because they weren't the simplest to answer. He looked over the list and tried to decide which one of those things was the best one but...how could anyone do that? This was Dumbledore they were talking about.
Moving on to the question about Harry Potter, Ollie figured he could figure out his answer by talking through it. He raised his hand and said, "Well, regarding his work with Harry Potter, I think.....well....I guess Dumbledore's reasons for not telling Harry anything was probably...a good thing? Though I know if I was Harry I'd be very upset." He paused for a moment to gather his thoughts in a way that made sense. "Anyway, so, it's probably a good thing Dumbledore didn't say anything because if he had told Harry everything, Harry could have, I don't know, done something or everything differently and that could have led to Voldemort winning and ruining everything forever............does that make sense?"
Jacob listened as others in the class answered the two questions at hand. He agreed with some of them, others less so. He thought for a moment and then raised his hand. "I agree with you," he said, gesturing to a Slytherin boy who'd just spoken. He didn't know anyone's names yet. "The Order of the Phoenix was probably one of Dumbledore's greatest contributions. He organized people to band together secretly, as well as organizing a double agent who was so effective that he even fooled Voldemort," he continued, thinking of Severus Snape. "Not just anyone could do that, I think."

Raising her hand, Sky offered her own opinion, "I think that Dumbledores greatest achievement might have been when he was killed by Severus Snape under his own orders in 1997. Well she didn't know all about it but she was learning. "I don't think it was illogical for Dumbledore to keep secrets from Harry. The man was wise beyond measure and it's not as if he did it to deliberately harm Harry, but because he wanted Harry to discover the secrets for himself. If he had just handed Harry the pile of information, Harry would never learn. But by forcing Harry to discover for himself, that is where true learning took place." and probably why her teachers and family stressed on her to learn from her failures .... and mistakes weren't bad

Now Albus Dumbledore had to be one of the most well-known people of Hogwarts history besides the Founders themselves and the likes of Harry Potter and Tom Riddle. Cass simply listened to what all her classmates said about the man, wizard and headmaster, jotting down into her notes any that hadn’t readily come to her own mind, the list Professor Newton was writing herself on the board helping anything she wasn’t hearing for any reason.
As for the further questions posed before the class, Cassie supposed she should give some kind of answer herself. The Ravenclaw thinking the topics over as she listened to what others had to say. “I believe his greatest accomplishment, in a way, is simply becoming staff here at Hogwarts,” she started with after raising her hand. “From there he not only taught hundreds of students in transfiguration, but interacted with Voldemort when he was developing himself. And his role as professor led to his role as headmaster where his thoughts and decisions impacted even more generations of students both good and bad…” Especially Harry Potter and that particular class of students.
“Further creating a name for himself in the history of Hogwarts and the Wizarding world.”

As Azura spoke, Rosalyn listened carefully and nodded along. She loved to hear all the different perspectives that her students had on matters. That was why she asked these kinds of questions in the first place! "Very insightful! Dumbledore DID indeed see Harry as a part of his family so that very much clouded his judgement. It was selfish but understandable." Who among us didn't do everything that they could to protect someone they loved? Even if it wasn't always 'right', it was understandable.
SPOILER!!: Tenacius :)

Well, that was a different perspective! Rosalyn liked it though; she liked hearing new perspectives on things. Plus Tenacius was a good student. Not that she ever played favourites or anything.
"Interesting. I can definitely see where you are coming from there. So you feel that it would have been better if Dumbledore prevented Tom Riddle from attending Hogwarts?" Would not attending Hogwarts have prevented it though? She had to wonder... This would probably remain something that they could never answer for sure though she DID see his point. Very good answer!
And as to the rest... "Yes, I think that played a part in it as well." On top of wanting to protect Harry that was. Human beings were complicated things and they could have conflicting motives and feelings.

It was nice to see someone mention The Order of the Phoenix since Rosalyn was quite fascinated by that group! They had played a big part in dealing with Lord Voldemort! "Indeed though I like to think that if Dumbledore hadn't have ended up dying when he did and Voldemort had stayed in power, that he and Harry Potter would have founded a group together." Just was something that she liked to imagine! Of course it would only have worked if Dumbledore was more open about things...

Another one for The Order and Rosalyn was pleased to see Severus Snape mentioned as well. "Very good! I am glad that someone mentioned Snape. Yes, his playing double agent for Dumbledore had a huge impact on things even if in the end it cost Snape his life. If he hadn't been working for Voldemort, Voldemort never would killed him for the Elder Wand... which Snape hadn't even possessed." Another fascinating historical figure even if he had been a terrible teacher! She had to admit that it took a lot of bravery to do what the man had done and that was something that he could be admired for even if he had been terrible to Harry Potter.

Oh! Another answer that she liked.
Rosalyn nodded. "The sacrifice that Dumbledore made and desire to keep Draco Malfoy from committing murder was a big one, I agree." It had saved that boy from going down a path that he never had TRUELY wanted to. "I think his trust in people was one of Dumbledore's best attributes." Trusting people was a GOOD thing though of course it was good not to go overboard with it because there were times when people SHOULDN'T be trusted!
"Yes, discovering things on your own learning from experience DOES help a lot." That went for everyone really. "Could there have been a way for him to tell Harry more without giving everything to him?" Just wondering! It was okay if Skylar didn't have more opinions on the matter.

Rosalyn couldn't help but smile at this answer because Professors DID have an impact on things. As one herself, she liked to think that she helped her students learn more about where they came from even if they didn't love the subject. "Very well said, Miss McNally!" She couldn't have stated the importance of it any better.
Glancing at her watch once again, she saw that it was time for them to start on the activity portion. This was something that some would love and some would hate. Maybe. She wasn't sure yet. At any rate she wanted to see some creativity from them and this was a new way for her to do it! Something that she hoped they enjoyed...
"Lovely job so far, guys! There is A LOT of information on Albus Dumbledore out there but we managed to get to the heart of things that he is well known for." Even if they hadn't gone way into depth they still had covered quite a bit! "For the activity I would like you to write a song about Dumbledore. There is no required length for it, it just needs to be about him! Could relate to his defeat of Grindelwald, his death, his relationship to Harry Potter... his life in general! Anything you choose just as long as it's related to Dumbledore." If they needed help with this, she could clarify further! "You CAN work with a partner for this. You are also allowed to rewrite an already existing song. If you choose to, please make sure to note the song you are using so that I know."
She headed back over to her desk and took a seat. "If you have any questions or need any help, just let me know and I will do my best to assist you."
OOC: So this is the main activity, guys! There is NO required post count and you can work with a partner if you choose to! All that is needed is a song about Dumbledore be it original or a rewrite! You have until 6:00 pm EST on November 30th.

Well this could get interesting. Sure she could probably sit down and compose one if she was asked and had a few weeks, but she was awful with lyrics.. it had taken her three months to write lyrics to the song that Chris had given her.
All right! She could do this! She hoped..
She pulled out her paper and started to think of songs she knew that she could possibly rewrite..
A few instantly popped into her head and she bit her lip as she shook her head.
Well this was going to be interesting.. and she mentally apologized to Dumbledore, she hoped he wasn't going to roll over in his grave when he heard the song she was going to rewrite for him..
She pulled out her parchment and quill and started to get to work.

Song to rewrite: History - One Direction
Verse 1..
Hmmm.. the chorus was in her head.. but not the verse... she tapped her quill on her lips as she thought.

Oh goody! So the professor had gotten what she had been saying and not just rambling. Cassie was glad that Professor Newton approved of her answer. But then they were moving on and the woman was explaining what she wanted out of the them for the rest of the lesson. Was it just her or were the professors really interested in creative writing and the like a bit more than usual this term? Muggle Studies was writing a letter or poem of appreciation to muggles, and other classes were writing up this and that. Now they were to work with Albus Dumbledore and see what they came up with.
And once more Cassie was stuck.
Being creative on a whim was one thing…being asked to do something on demand was harder. And picking a song, while offering help, also made another thing to chose from. Maybe she should find a partner to work with and jump start her creativity. “Anyone want to partner up?” she asked aloud, looking around to see if anyone reacted to her question. Anyone…?
Alright, activity time! Yay! And it was about Jonas' favorite aspects of History of Magic. He loved learning about the time of Harry Potter. It was so awesome. Let's see...he had learned that Albus Dumbledore had been a well respected man. Alright...That much was clear. Now then...Jonas got out a piece of parchment, a quill and ink bottle and started on his poem/song thing.

No...no...this didn't sound like a song at all, it just sounded like an essay...

Juno felt a tap on her shoulder and turned towards Oliver who smiled and waved. He was such a sweet guy, she understood why Esme liked him so much. She gave him a small wave and a smile back.
Oh, this would be a fun activity! She turned to Oliver, "Hey, you want to work together?" She asked with a grin. The didn't get to hang out much so this would be the best way to do so.
Juno was already thinking about songs they could re-write to make a new song about Dumbledore. There were too many options!! But maybe Oliver would have a good idea of what to use.

Ollie appreciated Professor Newton so much. He knew what he had said didn't really make much sense, but she was still nice enough to kind of lead him in the right direction. Not that other professors wouldn't do that, but he normally didn't ramble when answering a question. "Yeah, something like that! Or, maybe he'd try looking for the horcruxes sooner than when he was ready...I mean, imagine a first year going off looking for something that dangerous. It wouldn't end well." And if Harry had died before Dumbledore had...well, that probably wouldn't have been good either.

Oliver beamed at Juno and nodded. "I'd love that! I'm always weird about asking people to be my partner." Maybe he was oversharing, but it was true! Unless it was someone he was extremely close to, he kind of just wouldn't even bother asking.
He scooted his desk closer to hers and pulled out a fresh sheet of paper. "Okay, so...any ideas? I'm thinking something upbeat." Mostly because singing something a song about someone so important to the tune of Gangnam Style would be kind of hilarious. Dum-ble-dore.

A song? They were doing a song? Was she not hearing this correctly? She sat there listening to the professor her thoughts were mixed feelings. This was right up her alley. She had been writing songs for years now, but she just really started learning how to really write good ones and tweak and fix the ones she had wrote that could be saved. So this wasn't something everyone could do, but she had done it so this was an advantage. The other thought was writing songs wasn't something that just happened and it was hard. So was this even possible.
She looked at her notes and then back up at the board. She was a bit bouncy at the thought of writing another song, but torn on what to write, how to start, and what flow it should go in. She thought about it quietly as she tapped her quill.

They wuz gonna be writing a song?
Tenacius didnt know if he was about to squee in delight or horror. Song writing is a challenging thing in and of itself, writing lyric to capture even a sliver of the greatness that was the former Headmaster was something else entirely.
But oh has this got the wheels in his head turning. He grabbed a parchment and started scribbling down a few song titles off the top of his head, all the while flipping through his textbook on what could inspire him of Dumbledore's well live life....
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes

Now that she knew what they were doing Nat tried to get focused. She had to think of words to use for this song. Dumbledore didn't truly have to be used as long as people realized it was him, but at the same time did the professor want his name in it. She sat and thought about this trying to decided exactly what to do. Tapping on her desk she started to hum a bit. Maybe if she found a tune to use first that could work. With it just being a assignment not a long song probably would work. So maybe she'd use a kid song.
SPOILER!!: notes
Row, Row, Row your boat
gently down the stream.
Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, Merrily
Life's about a dream.
Now that she had a tune maybe she could just change the words to make it go to Dumbledore. Part of her felt she was half doing it since she wasn't coming up with the tune as well as the lyrics, but truly they didn't have enough time for that. Class would end before she really figured out one note.

Sure, Henry knew who Albus Dumbledore was. He was a fairly famous figure in Wizarding history. But he didn't know anything more than what was offered by his classmates and so he didn't really have anything to offer when any of the discussion questions were posed. Instead, he took that time to take down some notes when the important points were written on the board.
And now for the activity. They had to write a song about Dumbledore? Groan. This wasn't really something the fourth year felt he was very skilled in. Though maybe he could just use an existing song and change the lyrics to fit the old Headmaster. That might make it more bearable, but it was still a writing assignment. And maybe he could work with someone, that might help things too.
Looking around, he noticed that many of his friends were either pairing up already or seemed to be getting started on their own. At least the ones that were sitting closest to him. Hearing someone asking aloud for a partner, the fifteen year old turn his head to look that way. He didn't know that particular Ravenclaw, but he was always open to meeting someone new. And maybe she had some decent ideas. "Hey, I could use a partner if you wanted to work together," he called over to her as he grabbed some of his things and took a seat over by the girl. "I'm Henry."

All right.. here they went..
Azura took out her parchment and quill and started to scribble down the actual words to History.. because yes she knew them by heart. She sank a little lower in her chair as her quill scratched quickly over the paper..
She really hoped no one saw this, or you know.. laughed at her for it.

He's one of the greatest wizards to ever walk this earth
Though he was very strong,
He couldn't go on..

Huh.. she was actually all right with that.. it sounded not bad? While she was writing she was singing as well,, she had to stretch some of the words.. but it was working!

Hey
Cassie turned in the direction it had come from, brightening as the boy grabbing his belongings and coming towards her was offering to help and willing to work together. “Awesome...!” she replied in all honesty, hoping maybe between the two of them they would come up with something useful for the project they were supposed to be doing. “I’m Cassie,” she returned at his greeting, “Nice to meet you.” A Hufflepuff roughly her age, she noted as he sat down as she took note of his house patch.
As for said project… “So… do you have any ideas?” the Ravenclaw asked. “What I thought is we should definitely use an old song as I’m not exactly a song writer.” Unless he was of course. That was a possibility she realized and would make life oh so easier in this event if he was willing to supply something to work with. “Maybe something on his dragon uses…” That seemed like something no one else had thought to use and there was plenty of material with how many there were, over ten if she remembered correctly.
