The second she'd found out Henry not only signed up for dueling club but been partnered against her, she'd given him a great big hug (maybe a few smooches) and excitedly talked his ear off about how much FUN it would be. She wasn't about to underestimate him, even if it was his first year in the club. Char knew how smart he was, and the fact that he knew her so well meant it was possible that could be an advantage for him.
Probably he wouldn't be easily distracted by her feminine wiles either, given he knew full well that he could get more kisses after the duel was over.
"Are you ready?!" She bounced up and down a few times, shook her shoulders out, and saluted him, bowed, took her paces and turned around in her favourite dueling stance. The first thing she cast at him was Purple Firecrackers, as soon as she had turned around. Then, as was her favourite strategy, she cast featherlight on herself and followed this up with a new spell, something different just in case Henry had been watching her in the past duels, doing her best to gauge where he'd end up after the firecrackers attack.
"Fulgari!"
It was on!

What were the odds that his very first official duel would be against Charlotte Kettleburn? Henry couldn't help but to wonder if Professor Hirsch purposely paired them for his own amusement, but he knew that couldn't be the case. Teachers didn't really do that kind of thing, did they? But being his first real duel in the club, he was kind of nervous to go up against Char, even if he tried his best to not outwardly convey it. She was the best dueler in their year and being his first year in the club - not to mention his first actual duel - he was somewhat worried he'd do poorly in front of her.
And though that might have been his initial thought, Henry was also rather excited to be dueling against Char, especially after talking to her about it. Hugs and kisses from her were a definite bonus, and he knew she was right. No matter what, they would have a lot of fun in the dueling arena together. In fact, the more he thought about it, he was sure she was the best person to have his first duel with. He might've not had the chance after his first one anyway, plus he knew he could learn from her expertise, just as he had learned from some of the practice he did with Noelle.
He tried to clear his mind as he entered the arena, just as his friend had suggested, and he gave the girl across from him a grin. "I'm ready!" He stretched his arms a bit behind his back, before bowing to her as well and walking a few paces and turning back with his wand drawn.
The sound of firecrackers at his feet took him completely off-guard and he jumped out of the way in surprise, even if he had been a tad late in his effort. Henry noted that Char cast featherlight on herself which reminded him that Noelle had once told him of that strategy. But before he could cast it on himself as well, another spell was sent his way.
Fulgari? What did that do? Henry wasn't sure he knew that particular spell himself, but his first instinct was to cast a shield charm. "Protego!" He thought himself fairly decent at the defense spells at least, and he used it to deflect her own spell back to her. And figuring an offensive spell was necessary in a duel as well, depending on whether or not she blocked his deflection, Henry also sent Rictusempra her way as well. That was a fun spell.

With the fulgari bindings coming back at her, Char cast Diffindo at them, her first instinct, in a slash. The luminous cords split and harmlessly went past her.
"Ventus!" She cast, bringing her wand back around, a blast of wind heading straight at Henry hopefully with enough power to knock him around a bit. Followed in a quick one-two by, "Muffliato!"
As the incantation left her lips she herself was hit, by an extreme bout of tickling. Tears in her eyes and giggling she tried to fight it off and fight through it.
"Ohhh HeeEEEeeenry!" GIGGLE. TEEEHEEE. She doubled over and giggled.

Once he had sent the tickling charm her way, Henry used the brief reprieve to cast featherlight on himself. He'd really need to remember to do that one right away next time. If and when there was a next time. But perhaps he had cast it at an inopportune moment because not only was he not quite quick enough for the ventus jinx, but his lighter weight seemed to make Char's spell even more effective on him as he stumbled backwards and was knocked over by the force of the wind.
From his spot on the floor, he cast Salvio Hexia to deflect her muffliato, and he quickly got to his feet again, his wand at the ready. Maybe it wasn't the best choice for Henry to cast Rictusempra on Char though, because he got slightly distracted at how cute her giggles were. And he should have known how contagious her laughter was because he couldn't help but to chuckle a little himself. "You're okay though, right?" There were much worse spells though.
And he had to remind himself that this was a duel. Henry's instinct was to stop the spell for her, but he thought that she could manage to do it herself through her giggles. Otherwise, he would. But for now, he cast Fumos, producing a dark cloud that obscured where he moved to stand, hoping to catch her off-guard for a moment before the smoke cleared.

"I'm okay!" Charlotte giggled again but the effects of the rictusempra were starting to wear off now and she straightened up, only to be faced with a whole lot of smoke. Well... she couldn't attack with that could she? Because she couldn't see what was going on. She cast an Anti-Jinx on herself, followed by the footwear traction spell and then silently moved in the smoke herself, not wanting to be caught out when the smoke cleared.

Although Henry hadn't been too worried, knowing that Char was the best dueler in their year, he was glad to know that she was fine through all those giggles. But he tried not to be too distracted as he quickly thought through to his next course of action.
He crept quietly through the smoke, starting to make his way around the arena as he kept to the wall. Of course, once he heard Char's spells on herself, he realized that she might do the same while it was smoky. Well, maybe they'd both be surprised by each other's change in position once the smoke cleared, which was starting to happen.
He sent green sparks from his wand to his left, hoping Charlotte would see them through the fading smoke and think he was a little to the left, while he took two large steps to the right. Featherlight had been a good choice as he felt so weightless moving back.
Seeing her silhouette through the quickly disappearing smoke, meant she likely saw his and Henry first cast Herbifors then sent the babbling curse her way, hoping one or the other would meet its mark. Maybe they'd be distracting or make incantations difficult to speak.

Char saw the sparks though they weren't close enough to get her, with the smoke blocking Henry's vision but she didn't think he was trying to hit her, so what was he trying to do? She took a gamble and moved to where the sparks had just been, going left, not because she expected him to be left, but because she didn't think he'd expect her to go right where he'd aimed in the smoke.
The clearing smoke meant that he was suddenly visible, and there was already something coming at her! Charlotte bounded out of the way and whirled around with her wand up.
"Armanto!" Just in time, too. His next spell, the babbling curse, clashed with her shield and bounced back towards him, hard and fast. Following this Char pointed her wand DOWN at the ground and cast "Skurge!" The idea being that the slippery surface would spread out and Henry would slip. She herself with the traction spell on her shoes wouldn't be effected.
Whew. This was tough.

Once the smoke was clear, Henry could see exactly where Charlotte was standing, and it was fairly close to where he thought and had sent his spells. But he knew she was smart and would be waiting for him, so it wasn't too surprising that she'd be ready to defend herself so fast.
Her shield deflected his spell so fast though and his immediate reaction was to jump off to the side, but the momentum set him off balance. And with a slippery floor from her next spell, Henry wasn't able to regain his balance, causing him to fall hard on his side, his wand slipping from his outstretched grasp.
"Ow."
He wasn't really hurt, more surprised by his sudden meeting of the floor with his body. He had gotten hurt much worse playing Quidditch. But he did quickly scramble to get a hold of his wand again.

Well that had worked quite well! The floor was slippery but the traction on her shoes from the earlier spell meant that Char wasn't skidding anywhere or falling over.
"Are you okay?" Because it had looked as if he had fallen pretty hard. She wasn't one to play dirty, so she just waited for him to gather himself... even if she was a little tempted to try and summon his wand!

His wand was just inches away from him on the floor and Henry reached just a bit further to grab it again. "I'm okay!" he told her with the hint of a grin as started to get up. No worries. He could handle a little fall. But he did think it was rather nice of her to not take advantage of the situation. "Thanks though!"
Before he could fully rise to his feet, he cast Henshu on his own shoes so he wouldn't slip and fall again from the slick floor. And once he was on his feet again, he quickly flicked his wand to conjure a stream of bubbles Charlotte's way, hoping to distract her as he quickly took a step to the side and cast Cantis behind the bubbles.

Hirsch really loved a great duel and that's exactly what this duel was shaping up to be. Not just good, but great. Something about seeing the spells flying back and forth and both participants being challenged made him quite happy. Maybe they couldn't tell just yet but his face was lit up with a wide smile. In fact, he'd go as far as saying that he almost forgot that he was refereeing this duel.
Almost.
The duel had to come to a close before long and, when it did, the man struck up the shield rather reluctantly. "Excellent! Really and truly excellent!" Could they see the smile now? "I'm very pleased with the efforts from both of you. Especially you, Mr Whittebrook." He didn't expect that kind of talent from a, he assumed, first time dueller. "You've put up a great fight but the Dueling Champion reigns supreme." For this round, that is.
Stats: Charlotte Kettleburn: 95.33% Henry Whittebrook: 51.8%
