| | Herbology Lesson II - Fiery Flower Friends Paul had set up the portable dome greenhouse outside of the Hogwarts Greenhouses. The students absolutely could NOT miss it, and on top of that, he had given them notice that they had a lesson in the dome today. It had been here for a few days, now, though. Curious, really.
Upon entering the greenhouse, students would find it be stifling hot. Paul, dressed in a t-shirt and jeans along with running shoes, waited for his students with sweat beading down the back of his neck. But really, the climate in here had to be hot. He had warned them to dress comfortably for this lesson! He hoped no one wore a robe...they'd be dying! Positively dying!
Inside the greenhouse, there is a walkway where he students can sit, and on either side of the wide walkway are two different types of flowers.
On one side, there are these flowers: A sign is posted in the dirt with the words 'SPECIMEN A.' These black flowers that resemble roses grow in bushes, much like roses do. They do not have thorns, though, and the petals and the stems of the flowers are all black in color. They do not have a smell, and their petals, as the students can see, smolder, producing an orange color emitting from the petals. Ashes fall from the petals every so often as the petals smolder lightly. The flowers crackle like the end of a campfire. The soil surrounding the flowers has turned a blackened color, indecipherable from the ash falling from the petals. Odd little flowers, aren't they? As the an enormous cloud covers the sun, the blossom part of the flower close up slight, and the smoldering lessons.
On the other side are these flowers: A sign is posted in the dirt with the words, 'SPECIMEN B.' These are regular rose colors: reds, pinks, and whites. They are very visibly on fire; however, only the blossom of the flower is burning. The stem of these flowers are the normal green and are covered in thorns. These flowers give off a light rose scent, and the flames create a light whipping sound, almost like wind. Very light, though, hardly above a whisper. The soil surrounding these bushes of flowers is brown, the normal color of soil. As a cloud covers the sun, these flowers remain enflamed. The heat emitting from the flowers is...stifling. Good luck, students.
As students entered the Greenhouse, Paul pointed at board. "Come in and take your time to peek around the two different types of flowers, please. Once you have...explored them--please don't burn yourself all right? There is REAL fire--I would like you write ONE thing on the board--either under the similarities column OR under one of the two specimens. JUST ONE THING PELASE on what you observe about the flowers. I have buckets of iced bottle water if anyone feels the heat is too much!" Paul coughed a little, eyeing the enflamed flowers a bit. OOC: Hello everyone! Welcome to Herbology Lesson II! Come on in, have your character look around if they so want, and if they do write on the board, make sure it is only ONE thing or Paul will fuss xD I'm probably gonna be moving on in about 24 hours or more! |

| ash ketchum-up xD Ability is nothing without Opportunity | | Creativity is Intelligence having FUN Oh ok so no fertilizers needed. Was he relieved? Sure... but also a little sad, because the THRILL of mixing fertilizer with a fiery plant-- yeah the Gryffindoring is strong in this one.
So he finishes off adding the soil in the pot and then tackling the fire roses. Keep it drenched and he should be ok eh? "Aguamenti!" he waved his wand expertly and drenched the roses became. Maybe the one good time his usually overly strong spell casting would be of use.
He dug the fire roses out, making sure to be careful of the roots, and transplanted them into the pot, covering up the rest of the way with more potting soil. Just in time too because he can hear the roses starting to sizzle up again. He paused long enough to watch the roses flame on. So preettttyyy...
But right now it was time for that smouldering roses. The Gryffindor listened to the Professor give the additional lecture-- so they get to have their personal Floo powder after all this? That is AWESOME!
Gloves on, mortar on his hand, Tenacius proceeded to pick the five petals from five different floo flowers then dropped them into the mortar. Then down the pestle goes, pound pound grind and POUND until the he's got himself some ground floo flower bits. And into the plastic baggy it goes.... Quote:

Paul thought young Matthew could figure out if the flowers were dead or not...and if he couldn’t, then Paige--well, yes, there she went, explaining things. Good girl! He nodded at her to show her he had seen her finish up the potting process for the roses. Olivia, of course, had a good question! Paul smiled gently. “I suppose it doesn’t really matter. Some people prefer to cut off an entire flower from the bush and use all the petals on that flower--I, however, did not feel like dealing with cutting off flowers today. SO we did it this way,” he nodded. He eyed Matthew, again, and wondered if the boy hadn’t heard him correctly or…? He wasn’t fussed, really, more...well, that poor flower.
Pfft. “Yes, yes they do, Kitty!” he said with a smile once more. He was glad the students at least seemed to be enjoying the floo flowers. He wished they could have done more with them...however, being very delicate, they probably couldn’t have done much.
Once students looked like they were wrapping up, Paul cleared his throat. “Good good, everyone, just place your baggies up here on the table!” he called out. “I’ll have them shipped off to the Ministry where one way or another, since the recipe for floo powder is STILL secret, your petal dust will be turned into that very substance!” he beamed, and hopefully they thought it was neat. HE thought it was quite neat!
“Now, as Kitty mentioned, floo flowers turn to dust in the fall but the FLOWERS themselves grow again from the seeds that come from their ashes,” Quite cool, eh? “And speaking of their ashes….the funny thing about floo flowers is that...and this is ANOTHER reason why we keep them separated from other plants--if their smolders...or any of the ash that falls from the petals were to be picked up by the wind….touching another plant, magical OR mundane, the ash would then pollinate that plant...and give it some of its own very properties. It’s very dangerous to let them do this because other plants react so unpredictably to floo flowers…” he cleared his throat and took a deep breath. “The same...well, the fire roses have a similar property! Their smoke...does the same thing as floo flower ash!” All very...interesting. “Did everyone get that? Because it’s VASTLY IMPORTANT--”
Paul checked his watch and OH MY. :O They were SO LOW ON TIME. Where has it all GONE? He glanced at the door to the greenhouse and then back at the students. “I am afraid we are running out of time before I want to get to weird stuff--however, we can start it...and I’ll announce to you all later what we’re going to do. SO if everyone will listen to closely--keep in mind everything I just told you about the floo flowers and the fire roses pollination! And….go into the Greenhouse, any of them (be CAREFUL!) and pick a plant. Any plant. Jot the name down on a piece of paper with your name and hand it to me before you head out--quickly now, go go!” he shooed at them.
BECAUSE YEAH TIME CONSTRAINTS. “I’ll tell you more later, I promise!” OOC: OKAY GUYS I AM SO SORRY. I had a hectic week and then I went out of town (still am out of town) but I wanted to wrap up my lesson--it might seem unfinished or a QUICK ending, but that's okay. I'm gonna post an extra credit assignment shortly (this week, hopefully) that has to do with this lesson. IT WILL BE INTERESTING SO KEEP ALOOK OUT. Again, SORRY FOR MY SLOWNESS! I love you all <3
You can post however many times you want with your character going over to the greenhouses and picking a plant....go in pairs, groups, friends, IDC. I'll be keeping this open for a good bit...24-36 hours! Any questions, ask me or Paul! Muwah!

Alright so step one was put the bag on the table. Jonas got up and went to go put the bag on the table. Okay. Now what was supposed to be done? Oh right, pick a plant, any plant. Okay...though which one? They all seemed awesome. Okay, gotta pick one, gotta pick one. Ahah, a normal dandilion plant...yeah. He wrote down the name on a slip of papper and headed up to give it to the professor. Quote:

Hogwarts RPG Name: Silas Rainier Montesh Jr First Year | 1 of 4 Amigos Don't underestimate me! Oh nifty.. Their floo flower petal dust was going to be sent to the ministry and turned into floo powder. Miranda could hardly wait to be able to bring hers home and show her mother... She knew she'd find it pretty neat too...
Randa brought foward her little labeled baggie with the powder inside up to the front and placed it where instructed.. she smiled up at her professor.. this had been a pretty interesting class today and she was glad for having shown up for it...
Then as they had been told about the seriousness of the cross pollination she wondered if they too would be choosing a plant to have crossed with one of these two insanely groovy flowers?.... that would be neat, but the professor had JUST said how dangerous and unpredictable these cross breed flowers could be.. But she shrugged it off.. the teacher knew what he was doing , right?.... Cripes... She hoped so.. the idea of going and selecting another flower for such a purpose did make her nervous, but she did as they were told regardless.
she exited the domed greenhouse and went looking for the greenhouse she knew housed the Tentacula plant.. She wanted to see what would become of this hybrid if it pollinated well... She wrote the name of it on a piece of parchment and ran back and submitted her selection to the teacher...

| Baguette | there is no D in my name | TRAITORclaw | Queenie of Narnia The lesson was almost over already? That certainly went by a lot faster than Rula realized. Nice.
So now they needed to go pick a plant. Any random plant. Sounded easy enough. She wondered briefly what it might be for and decided to head to Greenhouse One to choose her plant. The ones in here weren't too bad.
She wasn't going to pick just a mundane flower though, even though those were her favorites. Definitely a no on the Fanged Geraniums and Honking Daffodils. Hmm...
Oooo. The Color Changing Roses. Yes, those seemed appropriate!
Rula wrote down that name as well as her own, then headed back to give Professor Myers her bit of parchment. "Here you go, Professor."

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf ...wait. Wait. WAIT. WAAAAAAAAAIT!
Had she just heard Professor Myers correctly? The seventh year's blue eyes instinctively shot around the classroom in search of Brian. THIS WAS WHAT THEY DID! Neville and Flick were products of their experimentation in this VERY field. ONLY NOW THEY COULD PERFORM EXPERIMENTAL CROSS BREEDING WITH AN INCREDIBLY COMPLEX SPECIES OF FLORA. CRAZY UNPREDICTABLE GLORIOUS CROSS BREEDING!
The Hufflepuff's face was far too small for the eager grin that had spread across her features and the bouncing she had been performing earlier in the lesson was nothing but a warm up to the dance she was displaying at present. This was...wow...she couldn't just pick any plant to go with floor flowers. She needed to weigh her options carefully...methodically...was it enough to just use one of her favorite plants for this assignment? That would leave her with either sunflowers or dittany...which both had their appeal.
BUT WAIT AGAIN. There were...two species of magical flora they had been working with today...surely that meant that she could pick at least two plants of her own to attempt the cross breeding process with...yes? Four would be best, so she could pick two mundane and two magical per ash pollination plant...
Getting out a piece of parchment, Paige decided to take the push the limits a little - she couldn't help it, her eager curiosity was getting the better of her - and scribbled down her first two thoughts as she wandered about the greenhouse some more to clear her head and draw inspiration from the appearance both floo flowers and fire roses...but then Brian's voice was echoing in her head about the quality of her experimentation. Yes, the flowers had their similar properties but NOT the same genetic make up - really, she was sounding more intelligent in her thoughts than she really was - so she ought to stick with just two...
But then she got to thinking about dittany as a choice and began second guessing herself. Yes, it was her favorite with its healing properties...but another magical plant came to mind. One that she had a more clear visual as to a possible product of the cross breeding with these flowers - particularly floo flowers.... Quote: FLOO FLOWERS & FIRE ROSES CROSS BREEDING EXPERIMENTATION SELECTIONS
magical: puffpod and maybe also dittany because I struggled with picking between the two
mundane: sunflower
Biting her lip as she wrote, Paige scribbled down her choices. Satisfied, for now, she scampered back to over to Professor Myers and slipped him her parchment.

| Zombie Apocalypse Team Leader ★ ★ in a crown of pepperoni and artisan cheese Olivia had actually been floating about the classroom, cleaning mortar and pestle sets, to keep herself busy. There was all this odd nervous energy building up within, and she felt it had to keep busy or else she'd combust. It was still sticky hot in the dome, but... the heat wasn't making her drowsy, as it might usually have. Oh! Professor Myers was answering her question. "So, basically, in the sense of simplifying, you only wanted us to deal with the flower petals and not with actually pruning these plants? Is that a hard process, sir? Do the plants react drastically to being snipped?"
... but before she could inquire further, loads of information was being given and she dashed to get it all written down. "They're like a Phoenix!" You know, rising from the ashes of their previous selves. AND ALSO, WOW....... They... basically could mutate other flowers just be their "spores" touching them?? Olivia regarded the Floor Flowers again, her interest anew.
ANYWAY.... they were nearing the end of the lesson and Professor Myers was suddenly all kljsflkjdsk about them going to pick a random plant in the greenhouses. Given the information they'd just received, Liv wondered if he'd be mutating whatever plant they chose with these Floor Flowers.... Or the other Flaming Roses, but the blonde found herself not as intrigued with them. Her tastes were very selective and finicky. Oops. Gryffindor problems.
Packing her things away, she went to investigate sans her bag, coming back several moments later with a plant name in mind. The Flesh-Eating Fir. Liv had chosen them for their cream-colored leaves. When touched by moonlight, they lit up completely, as if they were containing a million fireflies within its skin.... Such a lovely thought... Quote: Olivia Lynn Phillips Gryffindor Third Year Plant Name: Flsh-Eating Fir Commonly referred to as: Cannibalistic Christmas tree Type: Magical "Thank you for a wonderful lesson, Professor Myers." Hogwarts RPG Name: Solana Selwyn Slytherin Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Selene Diana Evans Ravenclaw Seventh Year | Snow Miser | Munchy | Molly Hooper | T | Hey, you | Phantom | Mrs. Chris Evans | Brat Pack | Tristalen Azura tilted her head a little as she listened to what they needed to do.. they were going to cross breed flowers! Ohhhh! That sounded super fun!
The little Ravenclaw was on her feet in no time and she hurried out of the sweltering dome and moved towards greenhouse one.. if she was honest.. she sort of wanted to pick the color changing roses.. because how cool would that be? Roses that changed color while flaming or smoldering?
Fwoopers it would be so beautiful..
But.. a rose was a rose.. and despite her penchant for the flower.. she decided to step out of her box and look around at the other plants she had to choose from. The purple eyed girl carefully walked around the greenhouse for a few moments before making her decision and walking back to the dome..
She knelt next to her stuff and rummaged around for her parchment and quill and then wrote : Quote:
Azura Luna Snow

There!
Azura picked up her bag and put it over her shoulder and moved to hand her parchment to Professor Meyers "This was an amazing lesson Professor. Roses are my favorite flower. " She said sigh a grin. "Have a good rest of your day. " And with that.. she was off. |

| Ability is nothing without Opportunity | | Creativity is Intelligence having FUN Oh so waitaminute.... they get to pick the plant they can cross polinate with the fire roses or the floo flowers??
Oh the combinations abound!
Tenacius bolted from class and entered the greenhouse, looked around, then bolted back into the dome. Greenhouse plants were pretty and all, but there was only one plant that he would really like to see all smouldery and fiery!... and yeah rosey too, because why not making it pretty can only be a step up from how it is now. It would become the Galadriel of trees-- beautiful and terrible all at once.... Quote:

| Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something... Natalia listened to the Professor. When he said about bringing the bag to the front and laid it with the rest. Going back to her seat Nat listened to him talk about experimentation on other plants. That sounded interesting enough. Sitting their thinking about what would happen if they picked more dangerous stuff compared to more calm things she lifted her hand. "Professor should we stay clear of some of the greenhouses though, like the Venemous Tentacula." She wanted to make sure she understood the direction and that possibly some of the younger students did as well. No one needed eaten today, especially a first or second year.
Once the students were allowed to get up, Natalia got up with them and headed into Greenhouse one. She knew exactly what she wanted to work with or to try if that was what they were doing. Looking around the greenhouse for the puffapods she picked one of the pots up and headed back into the area with the rest of the class. How interesting would it be to see what would happen once the ashes would touch it or the smoke.
This lesson had become very interesting. Natalia was glad that she hadn't freaked to much seeing the burning roses and stayed to see what was going on. Quote:

| Unforgivably Cursed | adultescent So they weren't going to do anything else today? Henry was caught between being glad class was over and wishing they could do more things, because he actually did like Herbology, especially when they were doing something fun and interesting. And he thought these flowers o'flame were indeed quite interesting.
The fifteen year old took his labeled baggy to the table, then returned to his seat to listen to the rest of the instructions. He really kind of wanted to do weird stuff now, but he was awfully curious about what they would do later. Pick a plant.. hmm.. what should he choose? Henry hopped off his stool and headed into the greenhouse for inspiration.
He wasn't sure exactly what they'd be doing with their selections as Professor Paul didn't really say, though the thought of a cross breed did cross his mind as it seemed like the professor was hinting at that. So that meant he needed to pick a really cool plant to go with it. He looked at the rows of plants, his eyes stopping first on some of the musical plants. Singing lilies were an interesting sort and he almost wrote that down, but from what he remembered of them, they were hybrids of hybrids. Would that make creating yet another hybrid even more difficult? Same with chiming bluebells too and he wasn't sure if he wanted to use honking daffodils. But maybe they weren't even doing what he thought and maybe he was overthinking things.
And so he did what he always did when he overthought things - avoided it completely and moved on. A different plant entirely might be just the thing. He wasn't sure how cool alihotsy was, but he did find it so interesting that the leaves were meant to induce laughter. That's what he would choose so he could get on with things. Quote:
Henry Whittebrook
Hufflepuff, Fourth Year
Plant: Alihotsy
Returning to the class area, Henry dropped off his piece of parchment to the professor before gathering his things and heading out. "Thanks, Professor Paul. Have a great day!"
