Default Herbology Lesson II - Fiery Flower Friends

Paul had set up the portable dome greenhouse outside of the Hogwarts Greenhouses. The students absolutely could NOT miss it, and on top of that, he had given them notice that they had a lesson in the dome today. It had been here for a few days, now, though. Curious, really.

Upon entering the greenhouse, students would find it be stifling hot. Paul, dressed in a t-shirt and jeans along with running shoes, waited for his students with sweat beading down the back of his neck. But really, the climate in here had to be hot. He had warned them to dress comfortably for this lesson! He hoped no one wore a robe...they'd be dying! Positively dying!

Inside the greenhouse, there is a walkway where he students can sit, and on either side of the wide walkway are two different types of flowers.

On one side, there are these flowers:

A sign is posted in the dirt with the words 'SPECIMEN A.' These black flowers that resemble roses grow in bushes, much like roses do. They do not have thorns, though, and the petals and the stems of the flowers are all black in color. They do not have a smell, and their petals, as the students can see, smolder, producing an orange color emitting from the petals. Ashes fall from the petals every so often as the petals smolder lightly. The flowers crackle like the end of a campfire. The soil surrounding the flowers has turned a blackened color, indecipherable from the ash falling from the petals. Odd little flowers, aren't they? As the an enormous cloud covers the sun, the blossom part of the flower close up slight, and the smoldering lessons.

On the other side are these flowers:

A sign is posted in the dirt with the words, 'SPECIMEN B.' These are regular rose colors: reds, pinks, and whites. They are very visibly on fire; however, only the blossom of the flower is burning. The stem of these flowers are the normal green and are covered in thorns. These flowers give off a light rose scent, and the flames create a light whipping sound, almost like wind. Very light, though, hardly above a whisper. The soil surrounding these bushes of flowers is brown, the normal color of soil. As a cloud covers the sun, these flowers remain enflamed. The heat emitting from the flowers is...stifling. Good luck, students.

As students entered the Greenhouse, Paul pointed at board. "Come in and take your time to peek around the two different types of flowers, please. Once you have...explored them--please don't burn yourself all right? There is REAL fire--I would like you write ONE thing on the board--either under the similarities column OR under one of the two specimens. JUST ONE THING PELASE on what you observe about the flowers. I have buckets of iced bottle water if anyone feels the heat is too much!" Paul coughed a little, eyeing the enflamed flowers a bit.

OOC: Hello everyone! Welcome to Herbology Lesson II! Come on in, have your character look around if they so want, and if they do write on the board, make sure it is only ONE thing or Paul will fuss xD I'm probably gonna be moving on in about 24 hours or more!

No one else had anything to add? Paul smiled as he stepped up the board. “WELL I would like to look closely at the Rosa Igniferas first!” he smiled and gestured at that side of the room. The roses that were...on fire!

“Now, first thing about Rosa Igniferas is that they are not your typical hybrid plant. They are the result of a long time process of breeding fire bushes and mundane roses,” he began. “It’s taken years and years and years and YEARS but...they are they’re own breed now, of course, and they were originally bred by a man named Prometheus Rosier, what a name, eh? He smiled. “Interestingly enough, when they were first bred, they were used to incubate and hatch orphaned dragon eggs. As far as I know, that has fallen out of practice completely.” And no longer in use. “They only flame in MIDSUMMER,” he started, “And THIS is one reason why I put them in the Greenhouse,....where they can drink up all the sun. This dome greenhouse is very good at simulating deep summer weather,” he explained. “But they live year round..can survive the bold..they just don’t flame at those times. Look at normal roses, I suppose! They burn for several hours during the days in the summer...and when the sun goes down, their flames eventually burn out.

Was everyone getting this?

“Now, we’re going to get into simple handling of these bushes...before we move on to the Floo Flowers.” Paul was far more interesting in the grey-black cousins. He had left out ONE important detail about the fire roses, but he would CERTAINLY get to it at some point. “Handling these babies can be..difficult, since they do burn. The way herbologists have figured out how to do this is...keeping them wet.” He gave his wand a wave and sprayed a nearby bush with a well placed Aguamenti. As soon as the water hit the roses, the fire went out with a dying sizzzzzzzle noise. Paul kneeled down and touched the rose. “I can touch them and care for them all I want...see?” he smiled as he stroked the rose petals. “Now, as you can see...these roses are planted. In the ground. And I want them potted,” he stood up and stretched.

“Pots are in the back...number one rule is to KEEP THEM WET...if you see them starting to flare up, IMMEDIATELY shoot them with water. Second rule...when potting the plots, you need to scoot them up roots and all, so be careful not to harm the roots when potting them. THIRD RULE. You need to put soil in the pot, first, scoop out the bush, place the bush IN the pot, and then put more soil in.” He was going over it quickly mostly because they had learned to pot plants last term...he couldn’t remember WHICH plant he’d chosen to do it with, but yeah.

“Now, lets go!”
Paul would be potting one, too. “If anyone has any questions, PLEASE ask me. Don’t forget to wear gloves, my dears!”

OOC: OKAY sorry I am so late you guys >.< I was not feeling well yesterday at all. BUT HERE WE ARE and you all have a good bit to RP potting the plants. Take however many posts you want, ask questions IC to Paul or OOC to me if you need to me <3

PS. Paul DID cast a cooling charm earlier when Blaise asked. So. It feels much better in the dome now! Thanks everyone!

Ohhh so he got it right... kinda. But the Torch-y feature was a seasonal thing. Like cherry blossoms. Gosh he miss cherry blossoms...

When he heard the Professor say they were going to be placing these in pots even this Gryffindor had to pause. Because plants are on fire yo. Singed curls are not fun he knows that much ahem.

He went to grab himself a pot and the potting supplies then started to scoop some potting soil in. Oh wait a minute "Professor, do we need to add fertilizer to this soil?" Do fire roses even need fertilizers? Because fire and fertilizers can make quite a bombastic pairing in a manner of speaking....

Paige actually GASPED and came out of her lovestruck gaze of the flora when Professor Myers doused them with water and extinguished their flames. WAS THAT REALLY OKAY?! Well, obviously it was as it came herbologist approved, but the seventh year still felt bad - on top of her own fluctuating anxieties regarding that particular charm. It was a mental block, she knew that after the lengthy conversation her and Brian had had - multiple times - on the magic theory behind charms and transfiguration spells, as Aguamenti WAs in fact a charm and Charms was one of her best subjects. Even so....

Biting her lip as she listened to instructions and jotted down a few addition notes to her parchment, Paige slipped out of her seat to grab her materials and made a very pointed stop in front of Professor Myers before getting down to work.

"Um...professor?" she asked softly while shyly turning the pot in her hands. "Would...um...administering a Flame-Freezing Charm but suitable as well? In place of..um...Aguamenti?" Her eyes were looking down at her shoes as she spoke, not meaning any disrespect just...quite nervous about administering a spell that she could be quite hit and miss with. Particularly when working with such rare and delicate plant as these....on top of extinguishing something so vital to their existence.

She listened with interest at the professor. When he talked about her answer she realized she used the wrong wording when she meant cold. She realized with magic you could make it warm all year, but muggle greenhouses were colder during winter months. Her bad! Anyway... This had become very interesting and she was in love with the fact that it wasn't hurting them and they were beautiful in their own way. A broken beautiful. What you first see really isn't the case type of beauty. They might turn into her favorite flower, though pink roses would never be pushed down.

Pulling out her parchment she wrote down the steps.

SPOILER!!: notes

Water
Soil
carefully remove roses from ground
plant

After writing her notes she got up and went for a pot in the back. Bringing it back and setting it down on her workstation Natalia pulled on her gloves and then pulled her wand. The entire process was kind of soothing within itself. Pointing her wand, "Aguamenti"

What was FUNNY about her answer? Aoife sunk into her shoulders and frowned a little, mostly with embarrassment for asking a dumb question. At least they wouldn't explode, though. Shaking that off, Aoife listened carefully as the activity was being explained, to avoid any further embarrassment. She was going to rock this part, and show this professor that she knew exactly what she was doing.

Aoife pulled up her gloves tight, surveyed the plants once more, and then went to the back of the greenhouse to fetch herself a pot. She ALMOST went straight for her wand once she had gotten back to her work area, but then remembered the professor's specific instruction to put the soil in first. Easy peasy!!

She tipped a good amount of soil into her pot and then faced the Fire Rose. And she staaaaaaaared at the BURNING FURNACE. For a good five minutes just wondering what the heck she needed to do.

Agua-(not aqua)-menti.

Aguamenti.

Well, since it wasn't going to explode, Aoife bit the bullet and pointed her wand at the plant. "Aguamenti." The flames sizzled into nothing, which was a bit sad actually. Definitely lost it's HUZZAH after that. Aoife tapped her chin as she mustered up a bit of braveness to actually touch it.

Hmm, so she needed to stop the burning if she wanted to handle the roses? That was bad, she liked them burning! Sighing she first made a few notes about what the professor had told them to make sure that she wasn’t forgetting anything. Then, when she was done with her notes she pulled took her wand in her hand and walked over toward the roses. “Aguamenti” she said with a disappointed look in her eyes and watched how the roses she had chosen stopped with burning. Hmm, this was really not fun at all anymore!

Putting on her cloves next she sighed again, it was time to work! Grabbing one of the pots she filled the bottom with some soil, exactly like the professor had told them to do and then she looked at the roses again to check if they still weren’t burning.

Ohhh so they were going to put the flaming roses into pots now.. That looked like it could be a bit of a chore. You know.. with them being on fire and all. Az wasn't feeling like getting burned right now..

Thankfully Professor Meyers showed them how to work with the flowers! Water.. that seemed obvious.

Azura thankfully remembered all the steps from the lesson when they had reported the Screechsnaps and the Honking Daffodils..

First step, grab a pot! Azura headed over and grabbed a pot, and then set it in front of the Flaming Rose she had decided to re-pot. She pulled on her gloves, took out her wand and aimed it at the rose.

"Aguamenti!" She said softy as she clear water came from her wand and she ran it gently over the flaming plant. A smile came to her face as the fire quickly died and she was left with a soggy rose. Right then! "Finite! " She stopped the water coming out of her wand, put it away and moved on to step two..

She filled the pot about halfway with dirt she scooped up with her hands from around the base of the flower.. There! She leaned back and wiped her face with the back of her glove, leaving a smudge of dirt there that she wasn't aware of.

Tap, tap, tap...

Aoife took this opportunity to gawp at her fellow students to see how they were doing before she continued, and to see just how safe these plants really were. But it seemed everyone else was either taking it suuuuuper slow, or chickening out, just like she kinda, sorta was. Aoife rolled her eyes and, again, got the job done. Like a baws.

She dug her fingers deep to get a good hold on the roots of the plant. She held her hands there for a moment to adjust to the temperature of the rose in her hand. Just to make sure it was actually cool enough to touch. She was becoming aware that the more she dragged this out, the more likely the plant was to engulf itself in flames again. That in her mind, Aoife pulled it up and plonked it down into the pot that she had half filled.

It looked... wonky. Wonky, yes. Aoife's head tilted a bit as she studied the Fire Rose, but as soon as she put a bit more soil into the pot to fill it up, it managed to straighten out a bit.

Hmmmmmmmm.........

ARGH...!?!

"Aguamenti!!!!!" Aoife spluttered quickly as the Fire Rose seemed to grow a speckle of fire dust on the top. It was soon extinguished, even though she'd already finished the potting so it wasn't really necessary.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Such. Awesome. FLOWERS.

Who knew flowers could be this cool? Not Matt. Maybe this whole going to school and learning stuff wasn't so bad and boring after all. Look at what he got to do now!! Awesooommmmmeeeeeeee.

While the professor and his classmates yapped about, Matt kept watching the fire-y flowers, especially the one combusting. He wanted to play with it while it was on fire like he used to do back home with matches and candles.

When they were given the okay, Matt leaped and went to get a pot PRONTO. He rushed back to where he was before and placed the pot next to him. He had his gloves on him, but he didn't want to use them just yet.

Wiggling his fingers, the Gryffindor quickly moved his hand over the fire-y flowers. Not too close to the actual flowers, of COURSE - Matt wasn't STUPID -, but high enough around where the fire was starting to dissipate.

MAN, that was still pretty hot. Hot enough for him to wave his hand frantically after his little stunt, but not hot enough for him to yelp or anything. It wasn't THAT bad. He had suffered worst burns before. See, it didn't even make his hand terribly red. Just a little.

HE COULD TOTALLY HANDLE THIS, ALRIGHT. It was cool.

...

He kind of wanted to do it again before starting to work, though. So. COOL.

Okay So... Repotting of fiery roses... JOy!... this was going to be fun... and with luck Miranda would be able to leave this lesson... Eyebrows intact not smoldering.... And yes she knew full well how to repot a plant.. She had remembered everything from those particular lessons in the past....

so, she mad her way over to where the pots were stored and grabbed one... Then took out her wand and pointed it at the Fire rose bush she had decided would be easiest to transplant and spoke clearly.

" Aguamenti!..." Dousing the rosebush until the flames were expired.... A loud hiising sound was audible as the heat from the once flaming flowers made steam of the water droplets pouring from the end of her wand...

Once she was satisfied that bush would not reignite she stopped the flow of water spewing forth from her wand with a simple, " Finite". That being the easiest counterspell she'd ever learned... It worked for practically anything you wanted to disist...

Looking around she found a shovel and began to work her way around the bush slowly loosening it's roots from the tangle roots surrounding them..Every so often the roses would start heating up again and threaten to burst back into flames and she'd spray the bush with water again and contiue to work it out of the ground...

After what seemed like an eternity Miranda finally had the roots free enough to pull the rosebush from the earth and put it into the pot that she had already put a bit of soil into... Gently she set the bush in and took and snuggled it in with more soil... Finally, She took her wand and once again said ..

" Aguamenti! " and watered the newly potted rosebush... She stepped back as she dusted off the dirt that was stuck to her gloves that she had been wearing.. Of course she had put them on before starting to pull that bush out of the ground.. That plant was full of thorns.. She wasn't about to have her hands torn to shreads...

All right, now that they pot was half way filled with dirt it was time to move onto the next steps. Azura carefully eyed her flower for any signs of bursting into flames again, but all she saw was smoldering petals.

All right. Here she went. She carefully took a hold of the stem, right under the bloom, making sure that she wasn't damaging any of the leaves as she gently tugged the plant upwards..

She could feel the roots loosen a bit and she gently siphoned some of the dirt from the roots of the fire roses into the pot..

Okay, now! Azura tugged upwards again and she carefully pushed her fingers into the soil to cup the roots of the plant in her hands.. She was using all of her concentration in order to be extra gentle! The last thing she wanted to do was harm the flower!

She gently tugged and finally got the plant free!

Yay!!

She transferred it into the new pot and was carefully filling it with dirt when Ack!! It burst into flame again! Whew! She was glad it hadn't done that sooner!

"Aguamenti!" She said as she pointed her wand at the plant and carefully wetted it down again.. "Finite. " She said as she stopped the water.. before a question came to her mind..

"Professor Meyers?"" Azura leaned back on her heels and turned her dirt smudged face forwards him.. "Do these plants need water? Or is there another way to feed them? I was just curious seeing as water puts fire out. "

Alright, left with a soggy plant and a half-filled pot of dirt, Jonas took the plant by its' base...roots, whatever and put it in the pot. Careful, he put some more dirt and packed it down. Was he supposed to water it??

And her guess about the plants needing warm temperatures had not been correct. Oh well. The other answer also made sense, and Kitty was actually very grateful that her answer was wrong because otherwise the cooling charm Blaise asked for wouldn't have happened. Still, even though it wasn't hot anymore, Kitty decided not to put back on her turtleneck. That would have just been distracting for everyone and she didn't mind tank tops.

Kitty listened attentively to Professor Myer's instructions on repotting fire roses. Okay, seemed easy enough. First she gathered one of the pots and brought it close to where she and the fire roses. She selected a white one and pointed her wand at it. "Aguamenti!" The petals sizzled as the fire went out. "Finite." She said as soon as that happened. Next she started putting soil into the pot like the professor had described.

It figured that a Gryffindor would request it be cooler inside the greenhouse. Not that Brooklyn had wanted it to stay stifling. In fact she did appreciate that it was much more bearable in the dome, even if there was still slight heat coming from the plants. She had stayed quiet during the discussion portion, by choice as usual, although she had slid her gloves on almost at the very second they had been told they were going to be repotting yet again, or in this case just potting. She wasn’t getting any dirtier than she had to, even if they hadn’t been told not to forget to wear gloves. That hadn’t been something she had to be reminded of.

She had continued to watch the fiery roses even as she had gotten up to retrieve a pot, returning to her original seat to set it down before approaching the roses. Choosing a bush, she flicked her wrist to loosen her wand from its holster before silently casting Aguamenti and sending a stream of water to douse the flames. Now she could transfer the bush safely, but first she had to loosen the soil enough to take the plant out correctly. She hadn’t neglected the instruction to keep the roots intact.

A soft finite could be heard as Hady canceled the water flowing from her wand. The small area of rose bush she was currently working with was wet enough. Picking up the shovel that was beside her feet she scooped some soil up and into the pot filling it a bit.

Next came the rose bush. She carefully dug it up from where it was roots and all sticking to a bit around the plant. Setting down the shovel she used her hands now to pick up the plant getting down under it and bringing it up out of the soil along with all it's roots.

It was then set down gently put quickly into it's new pot. A small flicker of movement and bright flashes caught Hady's eye just in time for her to pull her hand out of the wand and grab up her wand. "Aguamenti" she asked softly allowing the water to trickle down onto the roses that had just begun to ignite themselves. When the soft sizzling sounds of the fire burning out was heard that was when the canceling charm cast. There would be no accidents happening here today.

All she had left was to top it off with some more soil. This was done rather quickly with the shovel and lightly patted down to keep nicely in place. Was that all there was to this? It seemed....easy? Then again they were only moving them into pots, not breeding them or anything like that.

Anyway. Not her problem. And it was a bit cooler now, so bonus.

"Do you think anyone has given someone one of these to someone for Valentine's, Professor?" Kaycee asked going to fetch herself a pot. It seemed like a relevant question.

Paul shrugged. “Perhaps! What better way to show the person you love that you’re just BURNING with passion for them?!” he held his chest dramatically. “I think it’d be quite the romantic gift, don’t you?”

Paul shook his head at the boy’s question. “Nope, not these bad boys. They survive quite well without any of that stuff...sometimes they grow in the wild, too…” especially given the nature of these flowers..which again, Paul would get to in due time.

SPOILER!!: Paige

He turned to Paige as she spoke, raising a quizzical eyebrow in her general direction. “I suppose, yes? The water does not hurt the flowers, though, just a general FYI!” he said loud enough for all to hear. “But that would work…” he supposed it was probably some Herbologists’ choice to use that over aguamenti...but the way Paul saw it, they needed water anyways. It saved an extra step in there.

SPOILER!!: Azura

“Well, they need water….and as of right now, they intake it when we water them...putting their flames out doesn’t harm them in any way, though?” he thought he’d repeat it, just for reiteration. “But so far...yes, they need water.” Especially with their flames burning up a lot of energy--it probably helped that their flames only came out in the summer, when they could soak up all the Vitamin D that they wanted!

“If anyone has anymore questions, do not hesitate to ask!” He smiled and nodded, making his way to the back to grab himself a pot so he could get his hands on one of the Fire Roses, too!

OOC: Moving on at some point later today! <3

Relief. It was practically instantaneously washed all over her apprehensive features with the simple utterance of 'yes' by Professor Myers. "Oh, I understand, professor," she nodded while once again adjusting her hold on the pot. "I just...have more confidence and accuracy with the other charm...and given how delicate and rare this species is..." Well, she could trail off there and let her Head of House understand the nuance of where she was going with that thought, right? "Thank you, professor."

Now with her eager smile once again tugging on her features, Paige found herself a spot along the Rosa Igniferas and set her pot down beside her before carefully selecting which she would be replanting. Working mostly without tools, as per usual, Paige dipped her fingers into the soil until she found a patch she was satisfied with and scooped some of it up to sprinkle at the base of the pot. Not much, just enough to leave a bit of a cushion for the roots not to feel too cramped with the base of the pot. Smiling - and a SUPER eager one at that - Paige's attention moved to her wand as she opted to perform a Flame-Freezing Charm on her specimen. Pocketing her wand once she was done, the Hufflepuff reached out and ran her fingers through the flames to test the potency of her charm - which resulted in a content giggle as the flames licked her skin with a pleasant tickle.

Satisfied, Paige dipped her fingers deep into the soil around the plant and began to move them gingerly around the roots in a clockwise rotation to loosen the earth around it so she could more easily remove it in one fell swoop. Hands completely vanishing beneath the soil, the seventh year bit her lip and very VERY carefully began to lift upwards while watching carefully to make sure none of the roots were damaged during the transfer.

"Here we go..." she cooed softly to the plant as she placed it in the pot. Her hands returned to the dirt, scooping up more hardy handfuls this time, and adding it carefully to the pot and gently patting it all down while relishing in the feel of having dirt under her fingernails.

Now that the water was on the roses and they looked like normal flowers, Natalia began to work. She scooped up some soil and put inside the empty pot. She made sure only to do it up so high so that the roses roots could easily and safely get set down inside. Her eyes moved to the roses and she assessed how far the roots might be in the ground based on the maturity of the plant.

Using her wand she made a circle around the roses to that she new a safe place to start digging them up. Working cautiously as she moved dirt and began to lift the plant. As she pushed the dirt away she noticed a little flicker and set the plant down quickly. Pulling her wants she soaked it with water again. It was certainly a trickier plant to do now wasn't it. She did not want to get burned as she worked with it.

Moving the dirt and digging it up again, Nat moved the plant up out of the ground and carefully checked the roots. Once she had it all out she moved and set it carefully into the pot. Bringing over a bit more soil she covered the rest of the roots and filled the pot so that it was sitting nicely and then with her wand added some water to the new soil.

Hoping secretly that the roses were still burning she was a bit disappointment to see that they were still smoldering so with a sigh she started to dig in the ground in a attempt to get the roses out of the ground. She worked for a few minutes before she finally was able to get the roses out of the ground but when she had it she looked satisfied. But just when she wanted to put it into the pot she saw that they started to burn softly again and… It was so cool! She was holding a burning flower IN her hands! Putting it down quick she placed the roses into the pot and looked how the fire started to burn harder. But while she watched the fire she realized again that she wasn’t supposed to just watch them, no… She needed to stop the fire so with a sad look in her eyes she pointed her wand again at the roses and spoke slowly; “Aguamenti” and a slash of water hit the roses, extinguishing the fire immediately. “Finite!” she said when the roses were wet enough again and she put her wand back into her pocket and started to work again.

Quick she filled the pot with the ground until she couldn’t add more to the pot and with a sigh she looked down at her work, wondering if the professor would allow her to have one of them someday! Burning flowers…… She REALLY wanted to have them!

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Matt didn't want to put the fire out... fire was too cool to be put out, and those flames weren't causing any HARM. They were just there, on the flowers, looking cool and stuff. Surely they wouldn't get in Matt's way while he repotted them rose thingies, YEAH?

Psshhh, of course they wouldn't. Matt would be FINE.

So he didn't use Aguamenti. He DID put his gloves on, of course - again, he wasn't STUPID - and he started to work on it. First some soil. Lalala.

Easy peasy.

NOW to the actual fiery flowers. Muehehehehe, COOOOOOOL.

Being careful enough not hit his face in the process, Matt stretched his arms and reached to the roots. The stems were a bit taller than he remembered a normal rose stem being - not that he knew much about roses, but still - and the third year did struggle a little.

Okay, he struggled a lot, because guess what, pulling roots out, and CAREFULLY, was harder than he expected, especially since he had to not destroy the things. Uh.

Uuuhhhh...

...

Aaand they were out! Boom! And ohey, hair on fire. LOL. HAIR ON FIYAAAHHHH!!!

Matt did NOT drop the flowers, ALRIGHT, but he did wave them about. Woops? Haha.

FIYAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH, RAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Okay, so she wasn't TOTALLY right, but whatevz. It was all good. Besides, it was super hard to think clearly with how stuffy this greenhouse dome was..... which was remedied when Professor Myers blasted them all with a cooling charm. That... was super helpful and wonderful. Thank you very much, Professor Myers.

.... and just between us, Olivia wished they were focusing on the coal!black roses first. They were black, which suggested death and misery, but there was also something so beautiful about them as a whole. Especially given the way they were almost alight within thanks to their burning nature. The blonde found she couldn't really look away from their strangeness, which also wasn't a diss. She LOVED anything that was unusual and different. She'd also chosen her friends according to this personal philosophy.

Anyway, the flaming roses...Hmm. 'Keep them wet'. That didn't seem too difficult. Besides, she had the water spell well in hard. So, how could this go wrong? How, indeed.

Toddling off towards the back to collect a pot, Liv hefted one up; using her legs and leg muscles to take the brunt of the weight. Ha. Ha. It hurt. Not going to lie (even though they weren't that heavy), but what could one do? She simply didn't trust her levitation spell as it wasn't 100% effective. Anyway, with some grunting and the like, she got her pot back to a work station; fresh, clean soil already layered into the bottom of it.... which could've also added to the weight of it. Oh, well. Small successes, anyway. Now about these roses...

Slipping her gloves on, the Gryffindor utilized a gardening spade to assist her in the removal of the plant. After a well!placed Aguamenti! spell, she drove the spade's tip deep into the soil, pushing it inward to dig beneath the roses and their roots. One could only hope that this was successful given that she couldn't really SEE down into their current soil situation. It felt deep enough.... so, she was hoping for the best. Scooping the fiery roses out, Liv went about gently placing them, (roses, roots, and all) into the larger pot she'd just collected. And just in case, she doused them with another watering spell, before toddling off once more to gather a bit more soil. That was right, yea?

Brushing her hands off on her skirt, Paige removed her wand and began mentally preparing to offer a gentle trickle of water towards her newly potted fire rose when something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye.

A mass of flames much larger than those that should belong to the flora present, to be precise.

.................................................. ..............................

"HOLY HONKING DAFFODILS!"

Eyes widening, the seventh year nearly dropped her wand trying to point it at the Gryffindor - she didn't, but it was a little touch and go there and she did almost end up flinging her wand at him - and showed no hesitation before casting a surprisingly well aimed Aguamenti at the younger student. Well aimed...but in her panic...well...there was a clear display of unnecessary amounts of magical force.

A strong jet of water erupted from the tip of the Hufflepuff's wand, one perhaps strong enough to knock the boy over, and blasted him right in the face. But...at least it would extinguish those flames?

..........oops? Sorry? You're welcome? All of the above?

Default post 2and question for Professor Myers
Mischievous Niffler

Kitty listened (as she gently pulled the roses with the roots outwards) to the questions her fellow students had for Professor Myers. Kaycee's question about the rose flowers especially intrigued her. "What a scathingly brilliant idea," Kitty said, joining in on the conversation. "Professor Myers, where can we get some these?" She didn't have a boyfriend but if she did have one she imagined this would be the type of Valentine she'd love to receive.

Then the plant roared to life, just as it was halfway out. "GAA - oops!" Kitty squealed as the petals caught on fire. "Aguamenti!" The fire went out. "Finite!"

Phew! Now that that minor catastrophe was over, Kitty hurried to finish re-potting the plot.

She wasn’t about to risk taking too long and letting the roses light again. Brooklyn wasn’t about to risk ending up like others who had apparently not been concerned about their own safety. Instead, she’d quickly but still gently scooped up the bush she’d chosen and moved it just as swiftly to set down in the pot she’d brought to her work area. She had made sure it was partly filled with dirt beforehand, so it was easy to just begin filling in around the root ball. Keeping an eye on the blossoms at the same time, of course. At the first sign of a flame, she’d backed away and flicked her wand out of its holster again, casting another silent Aguamenti in order to send a soft shower over the roses and ensure at least another few moments of fire-free potting.

When enough dirt was in the pot, she carefully pressed it down to make sure the plant was secure but not stifled in any way. Glancing up as the mention of watering was made, she used her wand again, this time focusing the stream of water over the soil and making certain her rosebush would be happy in its new pot. Even though she eyed the blossoms again as another flame burst into being. The bush was already planted, so she ignored it. She was done.

Sprinkle a good bit of soil into the pot, check.

Gently dig the rosebush out...AFTER having cast aguamenti? Check.

Paul hummed to himself as he worked, eyeing the students around him to make sure no one was catching fire, or trying to sneak the roses out of the greenhouse...absolutely not, kiddos! It seemed that just when he thought he’d make it through the lesson without ANYONE catching fire at all, a Gryffindor happened.

Of course.

He didn’t even have a chance to continue his conversation with Paige Skeeter, no, because the badger had sent a, well, perhaps TOO well placed aguamenti on the boy. He covered his mouth to keep from laughing.

“Wow, Miss Skeeter...that was...enthusiastic! An enthusiastic hero, eh?” he smirked, but soon enough his eyes caught sight of ANOTHER FIRE EMERGENCY?! Paul was about to help her out when Kitty seemed to get it under control…’Be careful Miss Valentine..” THEY WERE DEALING WITH FIRE.

Abandoning his pot before finishing the potting process, he merely nodded at Paige. “Finish that up for me,” he whispered before moving to the front of the room to proceed with the lesson! ONWARD!

“Now, once everyone is finished up with their fire roses...leave your pots where they are and move your bodies AND your attention over to the black flowers--the FLOO FLOWERS--” he wiggled his fingers ominously, as if this were the REAL treat of the lesson [s]which, come on, it was![/I] “There are a few things I want to go over about them before we actually get started with what we’ll be doing with THEM.”

Ahem.

Meaning, take notes!

“Now, Floo Flowers have been around...for a good long time. A witch named Ignatia Wildsmith, however, is the reason we have floo powder! It’s rumored that she had been toying with the idea of both of these flowers--” he gestured at the floo flowers and then at the fire roses. “But for whatever reason, she picked floo flowers. And that is why we call it floo powder!” he explained. “Now, the flowers only begin to smoulder in the summer time...and as the season goes on...they slowly crumble into ash,” he sighed a bit. It was...a beautiful image. “If any of you ever get the chance to witness it, I highly recommend it. It’s...beautiful,” he said gently.

They ARE hot to the touch! And we get floo powder from their petals...by grinding their petals up. NOT from the ash they produce. As you can see,” and Paul bent down DRAMATICALLY to SWEEEEEEP up the ashy soil from which the floo flowers seemed to spring out of, “The soil floo flowers rest in start to develop a very ashy quality from housing these guys. Floo flowers ARE also a cousin of the fire roses, as I explained before! "

He let the soil drop from his hand back onto the ground.

“Now, I thought it’d be...interesting if we procured from these floo flowers the petal dust needed to make floo powder...and I would simply send them away to the Ministry, to the Transportation department...where all the rigamarole involved with making floo powder can happen. But...then each of you gets a small jar of the finished product from the petal dust you yourself produced!” He smiled. “SOOO...since the flowers are hot to the touch, if you could put your gloves on…” he put his back on. “And...go right in, pluck the petals GENTLY from the flowers. Five petals...from five different flowers, please, if you can manage it. There should be enough flowers for all of you do that with!” He took a deep breath. “Once you have your five petals, grab one of the mortar and pestles from the front...and grind up your petals to a find dust. Once THAT is done…” Paul whipped a little plastic baggy from atop the table that was in front of the blackboard. “GRAB THIS and put the dust in here. Label it. Place it back on the table here…”

He grinned.

Once that was done...they could do the COOL THING he wanted to do.

OOC: SORRY I'm taking so long guys! Busy Uni week for me, unexpectedly O_o Anyways! I'm giving this about 24 hours, all right? Whee! Easy enough, <3

Okay, so maybe her answer didn't quite hit the mark, but it was still a good guess. Bella quickly tried to jot down a few notes as Professor Paul explained the plants in more detail. She was very intrigued to learn that they lived year around and that they wouldn't die if the flames were to go out. In fact, it helped to care for them if you extinguished the flames first.

Once the instructions on what they would be doing first was finished, Bella got up to retrieve a pot from the back to get started on potting a flaming rosebush. “Aguamenti!” She pointed her wand at the bush as a jet of water poured from her wand and dowsed the flame. She then moved on to putting some soil into her pot, not thinking that she probably should have did that first before putting out the flames because her bush started burning again.
