IC Date, Place, Time: Friday October 28th, 2pm, Divination tower classroom
Entering up through the trapdoor you are met with the usual tea lounge classroom layout. The 50 or so circular tables along with cretonne covered arm chairs and fluffy blurbs in strong colours are scattered around the classroom. The lighting is provided by the many lamps on the tables that give off a weak crimson red lighting. Having taken into consideration her students well being Professor Vance has toned down the scents and warmth slightly for this class.
The cupboards along the tower walls are closed shut, but on top of them several big glass tanks rest full of hundred or so slug individuals in different colours, sizes and forms with and without shells that are all moving around in their current habitat.
On the blackboard behind Professor Vance's desk a big poster of a slug has been pinned to the board.
As the students come up through the trapdoor Laurel points to the glass tanks on top of the cupboards with a sunny smile pursing her lips. "Come on in and take your time to peek into the many glass tanks. Once you have explored them all to your hearts content then please take a glass jar from the cup boards below the tanks and select one slug for yourself that will be your companion for the remainder of the lesson and find yourself a seat. None of the slugs are off the flesh eating or fire variety so there should be no danger. They can be slimey though so be creative with how you lift the slugs without injuring them. If you have any problems then let me me know." With that said she moved across the classroom to stand by her desk.
OOC: Hello everyone! Welcome to Divination Lesson 2! Come on in and peek around the glass tanks and then select ONE slug and place it into a glass jar which your character brings with them back to their chosen seat. The slug of choice will be your characters companion for the remainder of the lesson. I will move on/start in approx 24 hours from this post.

Azura entered Divination and let out a soft sigh of relief as she found it was less warm and stuffy in the room. Perhaps it would help her think better and not seem like a total dunce in this class, yeah?
"Hello Professor Vance, how are you today? " She asked her with a warm smile as she directed her purple eyes towards the walls to look at the slugs..
Oh Fwoopers..She really hoped they weren't going to be divining the future using slugs. She did not want to have those things crawling all over her.. just to interpret their trails along her arm.
She carefully peered into the tanks and found a prettt bright blue slug thing with a shell. "Hello, you are going to come with me okay? " She said softly to the slug as she gently reached in and softly took a hold of its shell and pulled it upwards..
There!
The Ravenclaw set it in her glass jar and then moved to take a seat near the front. She peered at her slug for a moment before looking up at the Professor and raising her hand.
"Are we going to be telling the future using slug trails?" She asked curiously.
Jonas couldn't help but laugh as he walked in. He heard something about slugtrails. He was one of the majority that always thought divination was a joke. He just shrugged and nodded and the professor silently. He then wnet over to the tank. These weren't slugs, they were snails. He picked one up by it's shell though and put it in a jar. Taking the jar, he found a seat.

Kimi entered the classroom and said "Hello Professor Vance" Kimi made his way over to the tank and took a snail out of the tank and put it in a jar and found a seat near the front of the classroom and waited for class to start
Kitty entered the classroom and waited until her eyes adjusted to the change in lighting in the room. "Hello Professor Vance," she said cheerfully after her eyes had adjusted and she made her way over to the slugs in their tanks. Was it just her or were many of these slugs very familiar??? Hmmm...
"Ooh!" Kitty exclaimed with a jolt of surprise as she realized that these were the exact same slugs she had helped the professor collect in the slug pit. "Are these the slugs from the slug pit Professor?" she asked as she chose a blue slug and placed it in her jar. She selected the blue one because it was one of the ones she had personally handpicked in the pit.
After she had collected her slug she went to sit down next to Azura. "Hey Azura," she smiled at her friend as she looked down to see her slug. "He's cute. I helped Professor Vance collect these slugs from the slug pit just a little while ago, did you know that? I didn't think she was going to use them today though, but now it makes sense. I'd never seen so many slugs in one place!"
Miranda made her way into the class room and greeted her Divination teacher, " Hello, Professor Vance.. Nice to see you again..."
She saw the board and went to go and have a peak at the snails in the tanks. She was definitely not looking foward to having to pick one out and put it in a jar.. OR about having to be it's companion for the class... The thought made her gag a smidge.. Yucky slimy things they were... snails.
But class was class.. Here there wasn't much choice if you wanted the credit for showing up... She thought for a moment... And then she smiled a most clever smile.
She took a glass jar from the cupboard and tok out her wand* she pointed it at one of the snails, " Wengardium Leviosa... " Up floated the little shelled creature at the direction of her wand and her unbroken concentration and into her jar.
After capping it she made her way to her usual spot near the back...

Divination was a class that Natalia didn't mind. She kind of enjoyed the humor of it, though she did slightly believe in it. Making sure she had her bag with her quill and parchment . Climbing the ladder to the classroom she looked around the room. The scents never bothered her, but the new tank was a bit suspicious. Not that she was afraid of things in a tank, but she wasn't a big fan of them either.
Moving to the tanks she noticed they were slugs. SLUGS? "Do we really have to touch them?" They had slime, did the professor know that slime would get in her hair. She glanced around at the people that were already there. Maybe she could convince one of them to pick it up and put it in her jar for her.
Looking at the tank she watched the others get the slugs. EWWWWWW shew as going to have to touch one, wasn't she. Nope! "Anyone want to pick up my slug for me. My nails are still wet." They weren't but hey if she didn't have to touch that slimy thing she wasn't going to.

Cassie didn’t much mind divination, even if she herself seemed to not have much luck with the subject. The Ravenclaw was still curious about it and the various types as some seemed quite…out there. So when she entered the classroom from the trap door and spotted all the tanks and their slimy inhabitants, the third year really shouldn’t have been surprised. Nor that the professor was asking them to take one to work with for the lesson.
Great…one sluggy buddy.
“Good day, Professor,” she greeted before setting down to the task of picking one. At least there was no danger which was a small blessing. Just had to deal with a creature one might normally handle with gloves in either COMC or potions with them. Cass scanned over the remaining options, finally taking one out of its current home as carefully as she could. They were majorly slippery after all. She then made her way to a seat to deposit her belongings and her chosen slug safely on the table as she sat down ready for the lesson.

Well...today seemed as though it would be rather straightforward. Or so Paige thought as she stepped into the classroom and took note of the tanks filled with colorful gastropods. Creatures known as a universal symbol of stability and steadfastness ... the flow along the Journey of Life...and their sticky trail? Some would argue that it was beautifully iridescent and an ethereal trail of knowledge. Paige was...not one of those people. Divination methods using creatures not being the sort of form in her arsenal, but at least she was not squirmish around this particular garden pest. Quite used to handling them really and easily enough to clean one's hands after touching.
"Good day, Professor Vance," Paige smiled at the professor as she moved towards a seat, just the tiniest bit of bounce to her step - a bounce that had become a little more pronounced as the term had gone on, but still a bit timid.

Setting her owl shaped backpack down first, the seventh year made her way over towards the tanks and selected her own slug - slug because sans shell - and set it in the palm of her hand. Smiling, she was about to head back to her seat when she heard Nat's plea and her hand returned to the tank - this time selecting one of the tiny creatures with a shell. Shell ought to help a little, wet nails or not. "This one matches the color," she smiled, handing the little guy over to the Slytherin. Well, sort of. The shade of the shell and the shade of Nat's nails were not entirely the same but did...er...compliment one another?
Meanwhile, her own slug had taken to inching across the palm of her hand ever so slowly with its little eye sockets looking around curiously at its now tankless existence and leaving a slimy trail in its wake.

Okay, so... Divination was one of those subject that Ms. Olivia Phillips had slight attitude about. On the one hand, it was a nice thought... being able to predict one's future, but on the other... she just couldn't understand how any of it was accurate. Like, yes, they were witches and wizards and magic WAS very really, but... nothing she'd personally predicted had come true. Liv was a girl that responded to RESULTS! Things needed to happen to make her a believer, because her optimism could only be stretched so far.
.... AND SNAILS. There were snails. WHY was there snails? In Divination?
Taking a tour around the room, regarding each tank in turn, Olivia found herself in awe of the brightly colored mollusks. So many colors... She was reminded that one of her closest friends, Charlotte, had a deep fascination for the creatures. At one point, it'd been all the girl could talk about... Hmm.
Moving to collect a glass jar, the blonde decided on a snail (with a shell *rhyming*), colored a vibrant, fire-engine red. It was a GRYFFINRAWR snail, you see. Clearly meant JUST for her. Also, collecting said snail was no big deal, as she was a witch and had a wand. All that was required was simple levitation. Which she did in the next moment. Poising her wand, Olivia muttered "Wingardium Leviosa." carefully guiding the mollusk up and out of the tank... and into her awaiting jar. See? Easy peasy!
Now.... where to park herself....

Slugs!
After giving the pretty Professor his greets, the Gryffindor Ace rushed for the slug tanks and peered in. Yeah he was a bit disappointed that none of these are flesh eating or firey types, but slugs are COOL!
So they got to get one in a jar. Well that would be easy-- he just grabbed the biggest slimey within his reach. No gross reactions here, the boy looked like it was Christmas morning.
So into the jar it goes, along with some bits of leaves and twigs from its habitat. Because he dont want to let his slug get bored innit?
Also naming is totally happening "Hey there Jabba!"
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes
Snails, was the first thing she seen as she came though the trap door of the Divination tower. Surprisingly Divination was one of Katerina's favorite subject. To her surprise what was once a class she had dreaded signing up for, was one she was always ready for now.
Kat smiled, and looked around at all of the snails in the room. Trying to find her snail. It was very important that she find the right one. Grabbing a glass jar as she passed them, she took two or three good looks at all of the snails. Before going back and finding the smallest, yellow and red snail that she could find.
Opening the jar first and sitting the lid down. She wasn't afraid of touching a snail. She reached into the glass, on her tiptoes and pulled out the tiniest snail she had ever seen. "I'll call you squishy and you shall be my squishy." Yes, she totally stole that line from finding nemo, no big deal. She put her squishy into the glass jar and headed to take a seat.

She was looking around trying to seem a bit hopeless with her nails not really being wet, but wet, when Paige came to her rescue. She smiled as Paige picked up the one with a shell and placed it in her jar. "Yes it does match my nails Thank you for getting it for me." She barely looked at the thing, because it grossed her out to look at. They were just slimy and she didn't see the point in them.
"I have a confession." She looked at Paige feeling kind of bad she fell for the lie. "My nails aren't really wet, I just really don't want to touch those disgusting looking things." Giving her friend a sorry look before she looked to find a seat. "I guess we should find a place to sit." She headed for the tables and found an empty place.

Olly was not generally good at noticing things, but he definitely noticed the slugs when he walked into the Divination classroom. They were definitely not a regular fixture in the room. He was glad that the professor was explaining their purpose, and he made sure that he was actually paying attention.
He made his way closer to the slug tanks and studied them closely. To be honest he couldn't really tell a difference between one slug or another. They were just slugs. Actually, now that he thought about it, if he had just walked into the room without an explanation he probably would have thought they were snails. "Professor, what's the difference between a slug and a snail?" Did it really matter? No, but he was curious now.
Olly grabbed one of the clear jars from beneath the cupboards to coax a slug into. It was not too difficult, but he did have to nudge the little guy in. "Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you," he said. "Come on." When the slug was all snug in the jar he carried it to a desk. Olly set the slug in front of him and started thinking about names.

It was a relief to know the Professor had started going easy on the incense. While the option was there to crack the window open, that would only let the cold in--which would then require heating charms which would just allow the strong scents to travel around the room more and in horridly suffocating fashion. So yeah, this was good. This was tolerable.
Blaise stepped further into the classroom, taking special notice of the slugs in their tanks. The Fourth Year was marginally disappointed when the Professor mentioned them not being flesh eating but he supposed he'd have to deal.
The boy grabbed one from the tank and reached for a jar to place him in. If the slime bothered him, it wasn't at all apparent. "Hey Professor." He greeted, turning to find a table for his new, slimey friend. On the way, he bumped Livvy's chair in greeting with a smile before plopping down at Olly's table. "What'd you think we'll be doing with these? Can slugs tell the future?"
It wasn't something he'd ever really thought about before right this second.

Laurel was watching a forest green slug move across the length of her desk leaving a trail in its wake when Azura walked in, already eyeing the slugs tanks along the walls. Smiling she responded. "Good afternoon Azura! I'm good, thank you for asking. How are you?"
Stopping the snail before it dropped over the edge with a gentle nudge she looked up and nodded in affirmation of the Ravenclaw's question. "Yes that is exactly what we are going to do sweetie but not right away." First they had to discuss why.

She almost whipped her lesson notes off her desk in reaction to Kitty's jolt of surprise. Expecting the worst, Laurel was reaching for her wand when she heard the prefect's question. Releasing her grip on her wand and exhaling sharply she reprimanded slightly. "Oh sweet Circe. Please Kitty warn before you exclaim again. I thought a glass tank had broken."
Taking another breath Laurel nodded, keeping her tone steady. "Yes, these are the same slugs that you helped me collect from the slug pit in the dungeons."

It was with some relief that Laurel focused her attention on another students arrival with a smile still on her lips. "It's lovely to see you again too Miranda." She noted silently that the badger didn't dance over to pick out a slug for herself, but she did it and used her wand as any proper witch should to lift the gastropod without having to physically touch it. Especially if the creature made him or her uncomfortable.

It was the disgusted tone of another girl that had just walked in that made Laurel look up from her notes and smile broadly."Good day Natalia, yes, you have to touch the slugs Natalia, but you don't need to lift one up with your bare hand if you don't want to. You are a witch remember, so you have other options too." Would she get the hint?
Like a true snake though Natalia solved her dilemma by asking for a peer to lift up a slug for her with the excuse that her nails were still wet. Time would tell if anyone would be a good Samaritan and do it for her.

"Good afternoon Cassandra." Laurel chirped warmly as another Ravenclaw girl came up through the trapdoor. She watched in silence how the young girl tackled the task of picking a slug buddy. In the end she lifted one slippery slug with the use of her hands. It showed that she wasn't scared off doing what was required.

"Good afternoon Paige!" Laurel smiled warmly to the badger, noting that the girl seemed to have more bounce in her step than usual. Was it an effect of their talks and seer training? She watched the senior pick out a slug for herself and one for Natalia which was commendable. She'd remember that for when she gave out point after the lessons end.

Laurel was stealing a look at her watch when Oliver entered and asked her a question which was related to slugs. Smiling at the snake boy she responded. "Good day Oliver, interesting question. Since this is Divination class and not CoMC it won't be essential to the lesson but i can tell you that snails and slugs prefer different habitats and diet among other differences. To get a more full answer i advice you to talk to Professor Hernandez." It was after all not Laurel's area of expertise.

It wasn't something he'd ever really thought about before right this second.
Laurel was aiming to start when Blaise Bellaire graced the classroom with his arrival through the trapdoor. Nodding her head at him she greeted cheerily. "Good afternoon Blaise."
Deeming that it was time to start Laurel pulled her wand from her holster and used it to close the trapdoor. Any stragglers would need to file in quietly at the back or she'd think up a proper punishment.
Putting on her most cherry smile Laurel straighted and adressed the class."Welcome all to another lesson in the nobel art divination! Today which I assume you've all figured out by now, since you've all successfully have acquired a slug companion from the glass tanks, we will focus on divining our futures with the use of slugs.
Slugs are a very ancient tool for divination and they have provided numerous people over the centuries with their etheral trail of knowledge and they are often considered to be sacred. Slugs are also seen as communicators on all levels from the physical to the mental.
Does anyone know or can give a guess on what slugs are the universal symbol for and also what signficance the spiral on a slugs shell has?"
OOC: The lesson has started! You are all most welcome to join in late, just post as if your student charcter has been there from the start otherwise they will face IC consequences. I will move on again in approx 24 hours from this post.
Jonas had no idea and he wasn't one to be in the mood for talking. Even the professor called these snails slugs. Like seriously? None the less, Jonas resided his hand to speak.
"Maybe the diffferent shell designs tell us about a certain future? Like the lines on our palms?"

Well this was going to be interesting.. Azura was kinda interested in this lesson now.. due to the fact that it was rather unusual.. She looked up at Professor Vance as she spoke and she looked down at her slug for a moment before raising her hand..
"I heard they were the symbol of steadfastness.." She said as she looked down at her little slug.. it certainly seemed to be trekking it's way across the glass.

The Gryffindor was sufficiently distracted with Jabba the Slug that the Professor starting her lecture was like music in the background-- he can hear her, but not really focusing on her words. Jabba was such a big flat slug and oh!... its just about done munching through the 2nd leaf he dropped in. Lookitdat!
But oh.... there was a pause in the music-- the Prof was looking around expectantly, she just asked a question didnt she? Instant recall come on brain!-- Slugs. Universal Symbol. Go!
"Professor, they are the universal symbol for SLOW." Like really say your as slow as snails in any language and they'll know exactly what you mean.
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes

Juno, staring at her slug in the jar, thought for a moment. There were many different meanings and symbols that slugs represented. But to there was one more likely answer than others.
Juno raised her hand, and when she was called on answered, "I've heard that the spiral on the slug shell is symbolic of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth as well as many other things. But to me that is the most significant." She said with a slight shrug.

So there was a little difference between a snail and a slug. As soon as she suggested he go ask a different professor Olly lost most of his interest in the subject. Did the difference really matter? He might look into it more someday but for now no, he did not really care. He'd almost forgotten the subject anyway because he was busy trying to come up with a name for his little guy. He decided to go for the irony angle and call him Flash.
Slugs were a universal symbol for something? Olly could not think of what for. He agreed with that Gryffindor boy. What else could they stand for except slowness? And sliminess maybe. Olly had heard about the shell spiral standing for something before, but he couldn't quite remember. "Does it have something to do with perfection?" Was there a word for it? He couldn't quite remember. He felt like the answer was on the tip of his tongue, or he might not actually have any idea.
Miranda watched as the professor closed the hatch to her classroom signaling the start of the lessen. She looked down at the icky creature inching along the bottom of it's jar. she listened to the opening comments about the mystifying slugs before them.. She found it extremely hard to believe that a slug could be used for anything... Especially divining the future... As if that was even a real thing.. But anyway.. she had to be here so she figured on making the best out of the uncomfortable situation...
Once finished their teacher posed to them a question... A simple one in Miranda's view, but then she read alot and had soaked up alot of information as a result of her ravenous reading habit.. straight away her hand shot up into the air and when she was finally called upon she answered,
" Professor, the spiral on the sides of a snail shell signify the infinite.. No beginning with no end... Or the cycle of life... the circle itself is the same... No point of inception with noe of conclusion..." Randa sat back. She was proud of herself for having been able to see first that that is definitely what the pattern on a snail shell stood for... How could it not?

He'd been half listening when Olly asked the difference between snails and slugs, thinking the Professor would touch on it even briefly. When she said it didn't matter, the matter became miniscule to him. Frankly, he didn't much care what the difference was but he did find it curious how at the end of the Professor's explanation she mentioned the spiral's on a slug's shell, when slugs didn't have shells at all.
The Gryffindor might have said something, but she'd said it didn't matter and he figured she must have been using the two interchangeable. It wasn't clear why, given they really were different but this not being CoMC, the boy honestly couldn't see a point in raising such concern.
Instead, he placed his head on his desk and listened to the suggestions of the others. Slow seemed the most accurate if you asked him. Blaise, himself had nothing to contribute, nothing but staring his snail--because shell equal snail--in the eyes and waiting for the class to move on. It was clear his slimey friend liked him. Just look at how he was slowly but eagerly making his way to this side of the jar. Bonding, that was totally a thing.

Olivia smiled brightly at Professor Vance as she officially called the lesson to order. Good... the blonde was eager to get started and throw herself properly into whatever they'd be doing today. You know, to keep her mind off of her own personal drama.
So... Yep. Snails and slugs. Let's go.
At being asked what they symbolize, the answers varied, but Ace's was the only one that registered for Liv. These mollusks DID move super slow... but she felt it appropriate to add... "Like Ace said, they represent being slow... but maybe more like... Moving at your own pace? Not rushing into things unless you feel ready?" That seemed very Divination!like. Yes, she was being mildly calculating, seeing as she kinda struggled with this subject.
... But also, this DEFINITELY applied to her own life right now. So, perhaps that was why it was on her mind.

She barely looked at the thing, because it grossed her out to look at. They were just slimy and she didn't see the point in them.
"I have a confession." She looked at Paige feeling kind of bad she fell for the lie. "My nails aren't really wet, I just really don't want to touch those disgusting looking things." Giving her friend a sorry look before she looked to find a seat. "I guess we should find a place to sit." She headed for the tables and found an empty place.
...........oh.
Smiling sheepishly and biting down on her lower lip to suppress a meek giggle, Paige just surrendered to her naive nature on such matters and let the moment pass. It had seemed like a legitimate excuse and picking up an extra snail was really not much of a fuss to the Hufflepuff. Although she did think disgusting was a bit of a strong word. They were a vital part of the ecosystem, after all. "You're...probably not going to like how this lesson will likely go then..." she whispered in warning to Nat as she followed her back over towards the tables and sat down in the seat she had set her bag next to earlier.

Lesson beginning, Paige kept her attention on the slug in her hand that was still slowly making its way across her palm. Professor Vance's inquiry left her concerned, however, as the seventh year had elected to pick up a slug rather than a snail knowing that the presence of a shell would be more appealing to her classmates who were more like Nat when it came to these tiny creatures. It also hit her that her decision had also referenced her ambition to become a Healer, seeing as slugs were considered ethereal beings with healing powers by some cultures.
The initial question brought a subtle flush to the Hufflepuff's face, the answer she would provide being among the very thoughts she had had as she had entered the classroom. Universal symbol of stability and steadfastness and, in a snail's case, carrying one's home with them - because of the shell. Her classmates were already touching on possibly significances of the shell - again...should she be concerned she picked up a slug and not a snail? - and its spiral and while Paige had more to offer on that subject, she chose to back up a bit and focus on the universal symbol of the creatures in their possession.
"Because slugs and snails have species that exist on both land and water, it is said that they bridge the gap between the elements of Earth and Water. Creatures that accomplish this, bridging two elements, are believed to also possess the ability to bridge the gap between the mundane and the spiritual worlds." Which was why they made for strong vessels and tools for divination...if one were in tune with such methodology...which she was not.
