Chapter Twenty-Five: First Vowel, Cornerstone, and Capstone

The Transit Cycles
The Transits are found among the individual letters of your name, and are used in conjunction with the Essence Cycles to provide additional information about your year ahead. Your Transits predict, in a general way, the events which are slated to befall you in life.

Finding Your Transits:
The Transits are the individual letters and individual influences derived from your first, middle, and last names at birth (the one that was recorded on your original birth certificate.) ONE (1): You will now begin an entirely new phase of your life. You are on the threshold of a new beginning. Not only will fresh ideas come into your life, but you will accept and even embrace them. All inefficient methods will have to be eliminated from your life. In the same way, you must let go of relationships that no longer serve your future. Your leadership qualities will rush to the surface. Your environment will demand that you stand up to challenges, and face difficulties head on. You can no longer hide from the truths of your life. You are all-too aware of your shortcomings as a human being. This can drive you more deeply inward. You are extremely self-conscious. There may be feelings of failure and self-recrimination. These must be kept under control. All of this stems from an element of shock present in your life. The very ground upon which your personality is based seems to have experienced an upheaval. This psychic quake can often be replicated by some event in your life. Consequently, your identity is shaken.

It is a time to search yourself. Are you happy with what you are doing? Is your work directly in line with your higher values and talents? This is a period of self-review in which you will have a great opportunity to set your life upon a more deeply spiritual and lasting foundation. Consequently, you can make much progress and experience a great deal of future happiness as a result of this period. There is a realignment occurring that is putting you in touch with your deeper nature. The inner and the outer are now becoming one. It is a period of quickened psychological and spiritual growth.

Your intuition now will guide you safely from the storm. While your emotional life may be turbulent, your intuition gives you a sense that you are on the right track. In fact, you have not lost direction, but taken a quantum leap along your path. It can be a bit jarring, but altogether positive.

SIXTEEN (16): There are edifices of thoughts and behavior patterns that keep us from experiencing our true natures and the deeper happiness within. By some great benevolence of the universe, these edifices collapse from time to time. You are now in one of those benevolent periods. This is the proverbial dark night of the soul. You will find many things not working out as you had planned. There can be many unexpected, turbulent, and shocking events. There are debts to be paid that may seem unduly harsh or imbalanced. The time is confusing and you may feel that you have lost direction entirely.

Your challenge is to surrender to the larger forces that now seem so threatening. Let the transformative powers redirect you. This is the surest path out of the confusion that now dominates your life. The 16 Essence is very like a storm that seems, on the surface, to be knocking down buildings, but is in fact rearranging your life so that you emerge healthier and happier than before. The 16 Essence usually does not last long. You will find yourself on much sounder footing and in much better circumstances once it passes. You are experiencing the night that will surely bring the dawn. With it will come a new life.

Part of the lesson you are learning is gratitude. Take time to truly examine everything that has been given to you. You are overlooking the love in your life, the talents you have been given, the good things that have been added to your life without your acknowledgement. There is something of a blind spot in you that has brought about the current period of confusion. Now is a time to self-reflect and to truly take stock of your life. Gratitude is one of the keys to a healthy transformation. Offer thanks to the Universe for all that has been provided you. This is an act of true magnanimity because you likely feel that you have been treated unjustly by the greater forces. But such thinking is a delusion that has blinded you to your true nature and destiny. Open your heart. Accept that your vision is not of the infinite, but of the relative world. This will cause you to open up to the higher planes and allow them to guide.

Now is a time to develop faith. The power of faith can help you feel secure in the midst of change. Faith allows you to feel that you are heading in a good direction, even when you do not know what that direction is. Faith is the key to your happiness now. Meditate, pray, do regular spiritual practices. Take care of your health with sound diet and exercise programs. Try to eliminate all unhealthy attitudes and practices. Live a more enlightened inner life. Trust.

NINETEEN (19): You are in a struggle for independence and possessed by personal ambition. You will feel the need to work hard to establish yourself and your foundation. You are forward looking and even visionary, but for personal gain. This is a period of struggle. It is a time when you may feel torn between your personal desires and your concerns for others. It can be a time marked by stubbornness and rigidity, characteristics you will have to keep in check.

This duality between the lower desires and the higher realms of love can cause you much internal conflict. People may perceive you as greedy and self-centered. Because you are driven by ambition, you may be attracted to people who have no other priority but personal gain. For some, this will lead to shady business practices and even brushes with the law.

This can be a time when you feel a need to pull back from others and become less social than during previous years. But this can lead to isolation. You may also feel frustrated because your ambitions want instant gratification, which the time does not allow. The challenge during this time is to strike a balance between your worldly needs and your inner spiritual nature. The time requires much soul searching and a willingness to accept the perspective of others. Don't shut yourself off, or become jaundiced to your more idealistic brethren.

At the conclusion of the 19 Essence, the person is often better off materially, and far more independent, but there may also be a sense of disconnectedness from friends and loved ones. Therefore, it is important to work at maintaining close ties. Be open to others, and recognize that "man does not live by bread alone."

TWENTY-TWO (22): This is a period of enormous demands and, consequently, the chance to achieve greatness. You will find yourself at the center of some larger movement or social cause. Power has come to you, but you will need every ounce of strength to accomplish the task that lies before you.

You now serve some greater social good. Selfishness, pettiness, and timidity will cause you much trouble. They are antagonistic to everything that you have set your sights on. Now is a time to build some great and lasting edifice. That edifice may be physical - a building or a business, for example - or it may be social -- advancing a truly worthy social cause. The Arrows of Pythagoras
The Arrows of Pythagoras is a form of grid Arithmancy. The Pythagorean Number System, whereby value and meaning is assigned to different letters of the alphabet in a name or a word and their reduced sums. Each number from one through nine has a symbolic meaning associated with different life stages. The Arrows of Pythagoras are also known as Full Number Planes or Full Number Lines. They are similar to a form of Chinese Arithmancy known as the Lo Shu square and are, in fact, a refinement of this method.

The Arrows of Pythagoras give us a quick insight into an individual’s personality and are indicative of specific traits. They are, when interpreted in conjunction with other Arithmancy calculations, a useful way of identifying strong positive traits and character flaws.

Finding Your Arrows of Pythagoras:
Write on the top of your grid paper, your name, your year and house, and your birth date. For the Arrows of Pythagoras we use a 3x3 grid which fits the numbers 1-9 within it. Starting in the bottom left corner and working bottom to top and left to right we end up with a grid like so.

Chapter Thirty-Two: Chien Tung

Chien Tung
Kau Cim, or Chien Tung, is a fortune telling practice that originated in China. The practice begins where the person asking the questions requests answers from a sacred oracle lot. Traditionally, it's performed in a Taoist or Buddhist temple in front of an alter. But more modernly, it can be performed even in the comfort of one's own home.

The Practice of Chien Tung:

The flat sticks are stored in a tube and resemble wide, flat incense sticks. Often they are painted red at one end, with a single number, either Arabic numerals or Chinese characters or both, inscribed on each stick. In the traditional set, there's a total of 100 sticks, although the variation sold in most stores has only 78 sticks.

The practice begins with a person kneeling and silently thinking or whispering their question to the diviner, while holding the cup between their palms. The question in mind should be decisive and non-hesitant. The next part consists of the shaking of the tube, tipped slightly downward, which result in at least one stick falling out onto the floor. If multiple sticks drop out, those fortunes would not count and the process must start over. Each stick, designated by a number or character, is representative of one fortune.

Following a successful fortune, interpretation may be needed to comprehend the answer.

Chapter Thirty-Three: Paragrams
[Numbers in Literature]

Paragrams
Number mysticism got its start in Ancient Greece, with Pythagoreas & the Pythagoreans in the sixth century B.C.

Paragrams could be considered a type of wordplay, which is to say that they imply words to be graceful, well-placed even. They are derived from a Greek phrase meaning "jokes by the letter". Hobbes in 1674 said on paragram usage; "... paragrams, that is allusions of words are graceful, if they be well-place." It is commonly used in literature, in particular, poetry with all lines having the same sum; it is a small extension to constructing parallel passages. It provides an example of the power of numbers. Numbers have power, but numbers do not control events and coincidence happen.

Paragrams are an art form that sprang from Gematria, which is the practice of assigning numbers to letters and thus words to better understand their mystical significance.

How they work:
Use the Pythagorean Number system to assign numbers to letters in words. Then add up each letter's value to find the value of the word. If done correctly, there should be some symmetry between word values and phrase values, when compared to subsequent phrases in a paragraph.

Common Uses:
Paragrams are more about symmetry, for instance, poetry with all lines having the same sum and construction of parallel passages.

Chapter Thirty-Five:Chaldean Method

Chaldean Number System
Also called "Mystic Numerology", the Chaldean method is the older numerology of the two numerology systems. Despite being more accurate, it is less popular because of its difficulty as the alphabet values are not in any systematic order. But when analyzing a name under the Chaldean method, it gives a more occult or metaphysical flavor to the person's destiny and character. It plays a role in recognizing the hidden forces or invisible strings. The Chaldean method was developed by the Chaldeans a very long time ago in the southern part of Babylonia.

The name analyzed under the Chaldean method should also be the name you're most known by rather than necessarily your birth name. The method takes both your name and birthdate into consideration and the system only uses the numbers 1 to 8. The number 9 was omitted under this system because the Chaldeans felt the 9 was holy, sacred and thus to be held apart from the rest. HOWEVER should your name total 9, then the 9 remains.

How it works:
In the Chaldean Number System, the letters A-Z are assigned numerical values of 1-8 as follows:

Compound numbers:
Single numbers simply represent the physical outward appearance of a person's name, whereas the compound Chaldean numerology represents the deeper, metaphysical, hidden influences or forces behind the name.

The date of birth is the next most important number to Chaldean numerology after the name, because it is unchangeable and thereby a constant. A person may undergo name changes over the years due marriage or adoption, but the birth date remains the same.

Compound Number Meanings

14.This is a number of movement, combination of people and things, and danger from natural forces such as tempests, water, air or fire. This number is fortunate for dealings with money, specula*tion and changes in business, but there is always a strong element of risk and danger attached to it, but generally owing to the actions and fool hardiness of others. This is a number of occult significance, of magic and mystery; but as a rule it does not represent the higher side of occultism, its meaning being that the persons represented by it will use every art of magic they can to carry out their purpose. The Golden Ratio
The Golden Ratio is known by many other names, such as the golden mean, the divine proportion, or the golden proportion. It is represented by the Greek letter Phi (φ), and is an irrational mathematical constant approximately equal to 1.6180339887.

The Greek mathematician Euclid defined the golden ratio over two thousand years ago, in 300 BC, while working with ratios present in geographic figures. For those who forget what a ratio is, it's a proportion used to describe two things, mathematically speaking. For example, 12 is to 4, what 6 is to 2. This statement is valid because the relationship that exists between 12 and 4 (12 divided by 4 equals 3) is the same as that between 6 and 2 (6 divided by 2 equals 3). Particular attention was being given to the structure of the pentagram, due to the magical properties being attributed to it. During his calculations, he defined what is now called the golden ratio:

"A straight line is said to have been cut in extreme and mean ratio when, as the whole line is to the greater segment, so is the greater to the less." ~Euclid

How it works:
What this means is that if you divide a line into two segments, the ratio of the larger of the sections in relation to the entire segment, is equal to the ration of the smaller section, to the longer section. Or, if you were to look at the above line, and create 2 segments within it according to the golden ratio, the total length "a+b", is proportional to segment "a" in the same way that "a" is proportional to the shorter segment, "b".

What is incredible about this number, and what freaked out many mathematicians of the time, is that the number is irrational. There is an infinite number of decimal places, which is really mind-boggling if you think about it. The reason why Phi is such an intriguing number, is that it has a phenomenal way of popping up where it is least expected. In fact, our entire view of the world is changed by the fact that everything and anything can be represented by a number or a fraction, such as phi.

Examples of where its found:
The number phi is frequently found in geometry, especially in figures that have a pentagonal symmetry. If you look at only one point of a five-pointed star, you are looking at an isosceles triangle, which means that two of its sides are of equal length. If you draw a line down the middle of this triangle, such as you would to obtain its height, the ratio of the height to the base of the triangle is none other than phi.

People often wonder why certain shapes are more appealing. While we don't know for certain, there is tremendous evidence that the Golden Ratio is omnipresent in the natural world. In fact, some people have called in Nature's perfect number.

Look at your fingers closely. If you measure the length of the longest finger bone, and then the length of the finger next to it, and then divide the longer length by the shorter one, you should get a number close to 1.168. All parts of the human body are proportional to this number. In fact, if your face is symmetric and follows this ratio, you are often said to be of exquisite beauty.

Chapter Thirty-Seven: Numbers in Art and Music

Tesselations
The word "tessellation" comes from the Latin word, tessella, which means small tile.

How it works:
Tessellations are collections of shapes that fit together to cover a surface without overlapping or leaving gaps. They are typically composed of simple or regular polygons such as squares seen on a tiled floor, but they can also be composed of irregular shapes. They have two classifications; regular or irregular. Regular tessellations are composed of congruent shapes such as triangles, hexagons, or squares.

How to create at Tesselation:
You may apply one of the following geometrical principles in tessellations, which include: reflections, glide reflections, rotations and translations.

Examples of where its found:
Found in tiled floors, mosaics, and general artwork. Escher designed many famous tessellations.

Music
Sound is a traveling wave that oscillates through matter.

How it works:
Thus music is an arrangement of sounds in a particular order. When a string is plucked on a musical instrument, it generates waves by vibrating back and forth. Frequency is the number of times per second that these waves hit our ears, which is measured in Hertz (Hz). The more waves per second, the higher the pitch; fewer waves produce a lower pitch.

When the right numbers come together with the right musical frequencies, chords and harmonies are created. Chords are a group of notes which are played together at the same time. The ratios between the notes will determine whether the combined notes will sound good when played together.

Examples:
Depending on where you pluck a string determines where you should then hold the string to get a complementary note. For instance, plucking a violin string at its center, you need to hold the string at 2/3rds it original length for a complementary note. The string then vibrates 3/2 as fast as it was originally - meaning frequency went from 60 to 90 Hertz. Some of the ratios which exist in relation to musical notes are:

Octave = 2
Fifth = 3/2
Fourth = 4/3
Major 3rd = 5/4
Minor 3rd = 6/5
Major 6th = 5/3
Minor 6th = 8/5

Any of these ratios produce complementary sounds which enable us to produce harmonies and thus more appealing sounds.

One – The Sun | aggression, action, ambition

One primarily deals with strong will, positivity, pure energy. The number One reflects new beginnings, and purity. Such elements are seen in arenas where success is obtained simply because of dogged determination and repetition.
