Arithmancy Lesson One: Life-Path & Vibrational Numbers It’s already mid-December. A few short days until the train arrives and everyone can go home and see their families for winter break – if they are leaving that is. To celebrate the cheer of the end of the season Professor Carraro has left foil wrapped orange flavored chocolates on all of the desks. Question One: What is Arithmancy/What is the Purpose?OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Raf's Rules as well as with SS Site Rules before posting. Please note that this is NOT your first ARITHMANCY lesson of term, even if it's the first one being held by me this term. |
Azura walked into the classroom and smiled as she saw the chocolates on the desks. It seemed like the entire castle was getting into the Christmas Spirit.. Everyone except her.. she still had mixed feelings about the whole thing..due to last year.. Anyways she kept a smile on her face as she greeted the Professor. "Hello Professor, how are you?"" She asked as she settled into her usual desk near the front, on the left. She wrote her name on her name tag.. Quote:

"Hello Professor." he said and grabbed a chocolate. Not wanting to eat it right now though, he set it on his desk as he sat down. Alright. Now what? Oh name tags right. After writing his name and stuff, he started to open his chocolate. |
Though this isn't the first time to attend Professor Carraro's class, Jace was still amused by the fact that this man has a thing for drool. Did anyone paid any attention to his rules? Also...when did Jace every recite from his textbook? That isn't even a Ravenclaw thing to do, is it? With nothing else to do to while away his time, the third year 'Claw gathered all of his Arithmancy things and went straight to the classroom. Upon entering, brown eyes immediately saw a familiar head up front. And...where was the professor? Was he too early for class? Probably since it was just him and Azura inside. Sitting next to his best friend, Jace eyed the box of chocolate first as he stowed away his bag underneath the table. Hmm. Professor Carraro is too kind to do this, did he know? Unless it was part of the class discussion that is. Moving his attention away from the chocolate, Jace read the instruction on the board...and eyed the stag. "Do you reckon the stag drawing would come alive any minute?" Jace said leaning closer towards Azura. "It could be our professor." Just a wild and probably a clever thought. "Oh and...happy birthday again. A belated one this time." he added giving Azura a grin as he placed his nametag on his left chest. Quote:

She still didn’t understand why Arithmancy was a subject she needed to concern herself with. Yet Brooklyn had made her decision to test the professors, and that meant she had to make sure all of them respected her. Even the Arithmancy professor, but that didn’t change her general opinion on the subject. Professor Carraro’s rules hardly did much either, aside from oddly remind her of both Professor Bellaire and Professor Flamsteed at the same time. So far he hadn’t done anything to particularly irritate her. Aside from maybe the chocolate. Besides, she did appreciate the hug ban. She had ignored the chocolate orange on her desk as she took her seat. Instead, she moved it to the corner of the desk as she applied herself to writing her full name yet again on the nametag, wondering if the professor truly had that bad of a memory or if he was just too lazy to even try to remember. The stag hardly caught her interest either. Even at Hogwarts, she had yet to see a drawing come to life, aside from portraits. They didn’t take three-dimensional form, and she doubted the stag would either. Quote:

Kimi walked into the classroom and said "Hello Professor" as he took a seat and noticed the chocolate sitting on the table he smiled and wrote out his name tag Quote:

Magical Maths time..... The Gryffindor Ace swooped into the classroom and promptly hopped off his cruiser, giving a short salute at the Arithmancer "Heya Professor--" oh what is with the Stag chalk art "Nice!" he pointed at the board. That looked like a lot of time and talent went into doing that, which he always appreciated. And like always he makes his name plate thingy
Oh whats this? Chocolate orange? He read the instructions on the board then proceeded to do just that, cup hands over orange ball and SMACK!.... * S C A T T E R S * Whoops. Guess he doesnt know his own strengths eh.... |
Okay, he knew the holidays were coming up but honestly what was up with all the Professors trying to feed them? Didn't they think the elves were providing enough at meal times? Did they think that if they did it enough the more skeptical among the student body would lower their guard, giving them the right opportunity to finally mess with the food again? Well he wasn't having it. Blaise took his seat, followed closely behind by his quill and notepad. First order of business was removing the unwanted 'gift' from his desk. It was easily done, the boy simply reached over and plopped it onto the desk just in front of him. Two chocolates for whoever ended up sitting there. Good for them. "Hello Professor." Nice to see they were still using name tags. Three months of this and Blaise was beginning to think the man had no intention of ever learning their names. It was just as well, he supposed. If worst came to worst, it was always better when the Professor didn't know who you were unless you had a tag that gave a helping hand. Quote:

Professor Carraro finally made it into the room and leaned against his desk as he tossed his still wrapped orange up into the air – catching it before tossing it once again. The students were starting to file in and well, that was good right? SPOILER!!: textcut All right. It was time now wasn’t it? Shoving himself off of his desk Rafael walked over to the board and simply tapped on the blank expanse of board next to his intricate stag drawing. Which, truly had just been there for the heck of it as had the chocolates. ”Good morning class,” he grinned to everyone, ”I trust you all are ready for break?” Maybe they were more ready for the weekend? He didn’t really know or care truly what they were looking forward to. Twirling his wand in his fingers he stood there by the board before tapping his wand into the board. As the tip of his wand so much as graced the board the previously hidden words appeared. “Alright class…today I had planned on talking with you about curse breaking and using numeric coding to break them but with the up in rise poltergeist activity I felt it safer to discuss something far less dangerous.” That and frankly he didn’t want to bother having to fix all of the blunders they would cause…seriously, Hogwarts was like a deathtrap in and of itself. Sending the students a smile he began to speak again. ”Now for the theoretical potion of today I want all of you to really think about these questions.” he leaned against his desk once more and looked out at all of the student’s faces...as he watched them he was starting to mentally list the people he thought would likely fall asleep he wasn’t sure…but really, he wouldn’t hold it against them theoretical Arithmancy was the scholarly equivalent of taking a sleeping pill while rocking on a hammock. ”First question, can any of you tell me what Arithmancy is? Now please feel free to elaborate and even tell me what it means to you and what you believe the purpose of it is?” he asked as he still tried to compile his list of people that would sleep…and drool sleep usually was followed by drooling and that liquid was quite positively the most disgusting of the bunch. Kitty raised her hand and gave the textbook definition, modified somewhat."Arithmancy is a study of the magical properties of numbers, which one can use to do such things as predict the future (similar to Divination) but is more commonly used to learn things about yourself and others around you. In previous years we studied 'birth numbers' and what they mean to you." |
It was December but Cassie still didn’t know what to think of Arithmacy. She managed not to get too bored or feel stupid while working out things but she wasn’t super skilled at it either. Mediocre maybe. Yet she wasn’t giving up on it, just wasn’t holding her breathe on the matter. And thus she was still attending classes, her feet making their way to the appropriate classroom when it was time, the girl making her way inside and taking note of things. “Good day, Professor,” she greeted, making her way to her seat. Making up her name tag, full name as instructed, Cass set it on the desk before eying the orange. Maybe later when she earned it with doing her best at what they were presented with. She didn’t want to get distracted with food and get completely lost. Soon enough the man began class anyway and the Ravenclaw was listening as he spoke and described his plans. No cursebreaking it seemed but something else. Bloody poltergeists. But questions first…always questions. “Arithmancy would be the study of numbers and their various meanings,” she answered after raising her hand. It certainly felt right and her own words. “Its purpose would be…um…to try and find a connection between yourself and the world and numbers around you.” Okay, maybe not the best with that one. |
They were being asked what Arthimancy was? Was he kidding? Was this a joke? It was December and they were being asked what Arthimancy was? Well this took the wind out of Natalia's sails and she slid in her seat. She had come early, she had sat int he front. This was her subject, this was the thing she knew she liked. Not the other subjects, but numbers. She loved numbers. She pulled out her parchment and began doodling, maybe she'd write a note. The younger students probably needed the reminder of what it was. Arthimancy to her was stability, numbers didn't change. It wasn't the definition everyone else was giving. It was so much more to her. So for now she sat quietly and waited for it to become more challenging. |
Swallowing hard as he saw the professor, Jace inclined his head immediately wishing he could take back what he said. Well, at least Professor C isn’t mad at him, right? “S-sorry, professor.” He said in almost a whisper, sparing Azura a glance. Merlin. When did the professor arrive? Was he too enamoured with other stuff, lately? It doesn’t help, however, that Christmas is just around the corner. Three weeks off of school, and just hanging out with his family and friends in Japan? It sounds exciting! However, the idea of side-apparating didn’t appeal to him. He ought to ask his dad to book plane tickets instead. Clearing his thoughts, and banishing the idea of vacation, Jace leaned back on his seat as he listened to the professor. Merlin, if it weren’t for Peeves and Miffy, they would’ve learned something about curse-breaking. A highly logical topic, that would surely satisfy Jace’s brain. After letting the others answer, Jace raised his hand to answer. “Arithmancy, to me at least, is not just about connecting numbers to ourselves. It is about exploring the magical properties of each number, and use it to counter or enhance a spell...like in breaking a curse...or to augment one.” He said scratching the side of his head. “Perhaps, one could treat it like...how Runes work...sans the galdr portion.” Now...was that a textbook response? He was sure it wasn’t. But...it may have made the others sleepy. Not his fault though. Arithmancy can be boring, especially if one is not that inclined to magical maths. Again, not his problem. |
Even if there wasn't always a lot of spellwork associated with the subject, Arithmancy was a class that Henry thought was alright. Even if it wasn't math like he learned in muggle elementary school, numbers generally came fairly easy to him. Curse breaking actually sounded pretty awesome, but he was rather disappointed when the professor said that they wouldn't be talking about that today because of the poltergeists. Even if they seemed to be more of a presence than usual, he didn't know why they would change the planned class topic. So they were going to do a review instead? That wasn't nearly as exciting. It was his second year taking Arithmancy, but even for those who just started taking it this year, they had been in school for three months now. Hopefully everyone in the class knew what Arithmancy was by now. It was a basic answer and he didn't have more to contribute other than what was already said by his classmates, so he took to doodling numbers in different font styles on the edge of the parchment. Hopefully he could be more engaged with the next question. |
Of course they were all looking forward to their holidays, Professor. Was that even a serious statement? The sooner he could get away from this place, the better it would be for him. Blaise absolutely adored the holidays; they meant he didn't have to be at Hogwarts. The Gryffindor turned his gaze to the board as the Professor began the lesson. What was Arithmancy? He was pretty sure he already had notes on that somewhere closer to the front of his previous notepad but what the hell, why not have it in this one too? Especially with Kitty offering the definition his textbook had been telling him since the start of the year. Funny how things like that didn't change much. Blaise leaned back in his seat, pondering whether Professor Carraro's question was rhetorical or not--because he asked what it meant to them and the Fourth Year couldn't help but think that the man would be upset if he gave an honest answer. Honesty tended to bother a lot of people around here, as he'd come to realize. Maybe....maybe he'd just....keep his thoughts to himself. Just in case. |
Numbers. Heh. Olivia was not.... confident about how this lesson was going to go for her at all. She simply wasn't talented when it came to this particular subject matter, and to be honest, she'd been struggling since the beginning of the year. Given that this wasn't their first Arithmancy lesson. So, it was like an hour of stress and disappointment every week. Where was Ethan?! She was in desperate need of him.... Also, they'd already filled out nametags, as again, this wasn't the first lesson of the year. So, Liv took hers from her bag and plopped it down on the desk she'd chosen for today. She'd smeared glitter on it in her free time. Quote:
"it's hard and confuses me." The blonde Gryffindor was already so defeated, couldn't you tell? "They were invented to confuse and stress people out. They should be ashamed of themselves, honestly." |
Whooooops! Pick pick pick them scattered chocolate pieces. And GOBBLE. Yeah 5 second rule whatever whatever GRYFFINDOR GUTS can take ANYTHING YAH! But oh ok class was starting "Its Magical Maths!" he replied, thats what always been in his head and now he's articulating it. Thats always a good thing right? And what is its purpose? "To look impressive!" because MATHS. "I mean just look at where it can be applied on-- curse-breaking, tangible divination, even creating arts and music...." pretty darn impressive to him. |
Az shook her head at Jace as he settled down next to her.. "My birthdays isn't for a few days silly, the 22nd!" She said with a smile, right in time for break so no one could celebrate it with her.. ehh Maybe she could have a party when they all got back? Who knew.. she bit her lip as the Professor spoke to Jace and she gently squeezed his hand.. hoping to reassure him that everything was all right.. All right Professor.. here came the text book version.. she apologizes in advances.. honestly! She raised her hand and said "Arithmancy is the study of the magical properties of numbers.. it can also be used to predict the future by way of Numerology.." She said with a nod.. "For me personally it's challenging due to the fact that I struggle with numbers, but the magical aspect helps out and last year with curse breaking it was facinsting.." Oops.. she talked too much.. sorry Professor.. |
Well shoot. Everyone started saying answers and reasons. All Jonas did was sit here then. He saw the look on the professor's face. Yo! He remembered to take a name tag eventually didn't he? Yeah so ha! |
Sitting in the classroom she slowly made her name tag and place it on her table. Quote:
But when the first questions were asked she immediately decided to keep silent and to just listen to what others were saying, she wasn’t good in this lesson so why making a fool of herself by saying something stupid because she didn’t understood a thing about this whole subject? |
SPOILER!!: ”magical numbers” SPOILER!!: ”silent ones” Looking out at the students in his charge he paused for a moment. ”Now I want to bring something that Miss Phillips said about Arithmancy having the purpose to confuse people, I get this. I used to be confused by mathematics as well when I was your age” okay that was a lie but he was still going for it. ”Miss Phillips, I want to thank you for your honesty and bravery in bringing it to my attention and the classes attention that Arithmancy confuses you – this is why I have open office hours that all of you are welcome to use.” he smiled over to her. ”Miss Phillips, thank you for your bravery – I would like to award five points to gryffindor for your bravery…as I know from experience expressing anything that may feel like an inadequacy takes the uptmost bravery.” There. It was the nice thing to do right? Promote the kiddos to be more brave and honest in his class?OOC: class will move along in about 12-hours - please feel free to join in if you haven't posted yet |
Azura tilted her head a bit as the Professor spoke and she bit her lip a little in order to try and figure out what Arithmancy was connected too. She raised her hand after a few moments of thinking. "It's connected to Defense against the Dark Arts, we used it last year to help with curse breaking. As well as Divinatiin, due to the Numerology. Using numbers to predict things seems a bit more reliable though. " Not that dripping egg whites in water wasn't fun.. but how was that supposed to tell your future? |
Rafael grinned at what Miss Snow was saying and nodded. She had a point Arithmancy was highly connected to Numerology in fact it was a subset of Numerology…but that was really getting into the substructure of the word and what it meant now wasn’t it? OOC: I’m moving us along a bit because we only have a few days and I want to be able to describe the new subject matter to the uptmost of my ability. Please feel free to catch up if you missed the posting window for this previous question. The class will be moving on to learning about the activity in about 12 hours. |
Astrology? As in Divination Astrology? Jace tilted his head, a bit amused by the topic given that Professor Flamsteed was no longer teaching in Hogwarts. If he was here though...he'd probably have a fit. Well, what did he know? Maybe the former Astronomy professor has passed down the same hatred for the subject matter to one of his Gryffindors, hmm? Astrology and Arithmancy? Hmm. Jace raised his hand and offered his answer. "Both can serve as guides for us in predicting our future, professor." Astrology is the study of planetary arrangement according to your birth sign...whereas in Arithmancy, it talks about numbers that govern each individual based on his birthday. Hmm. Astrology huh? He thought that subject was banned in this school for reasons... |
Catching up. ....She'd been given points for admitting that Arithmancy scared her and stressed her out?? Well, I mean.... that obviously caused the blonde to perk up slightly. Huh. It never cost her anything to admit these things. It wasn't like she felt ashamed. If anyone wanted to tease her about it, they could face her in a duel and she'rock their world. Ahem. "Runes, sir. Couldn't they be used with Runes? You mentioned the Curse-breaking stuff. I do know that Runes can cause curses." They'd not had any Runes lessons in her day, thanks to the subject just making its return, but she'd heard that somewhere. So, it could've been wrong. Don't quote her or anything. Also, Astrology. If her former Head of House could hear this now, he'd of had a fit. "Astrology is more about horoscopes and the like, right?" |
