Default Private Practice Room

With the growing interest in learning how to cast various defensive spells outside of class time, Professor Hirsch has sectioned off another room just for this practice. A room not linked with any sort of class spells going on and a more guarded room than some of the others, save for his own office, of course.

This well lit, circular room is scarce of anything remotely normal for a normal classroom: meaning that you won't find any desks or chairs here. Instead, the room has been split up into a number of different sections where you can practice in the peace and privacy that the Dueling Arena doesn't provide. Want to practice in groups? The sections can expand to fit however many people you want to practice with. A number of dummies - surprised? - sits towards the back of the room, ready for you to practice your spells on. These could take the form of whatever you need it to be but be warned: they will NOT have the same effect. A dementor!dummy won't suck out your soul.

From time to time, Hirsch will hold practices in here in small groups outside of class hours. If you'd like to join in, you're more than welcome to. If not, be polite and try not to disturb anyone else practising in here. If you want to practice on your own here, you're welcome to do so. Just make sure to fix anything you break, okay?

OOC: Sooo this thread is a thread in which Hirsch/I will be holding out-of-class classes for those wishing to learn something extra. This room is free for people to RP around in but because of the small group classes aspect, just make sure to let me know? ^^

It didn't take long to reach the new door that was near the Dueling Arena itself. It was one he'd sectioned off himself and rearranged due to the number of students that had approached him for private practices on defence. He had to accommodate, after all, and this was the best way to do it.

Approaching the door, the man took out his wand and gave it a few rhythmic taps. The door swung open to reveal a well lit room that was split up into different sections. Another flick of his wand and a few windows opened up by themselves. No one could work in a stuffy room, least of all him.

Smiling to himself, the man headed further into the room and towards one of the larger sections before turning to the two young students he'd led here. "Welcome, Haddie and Jaemin, to the Private Practice Room. This is where we're going to start practising the Patronus Charm." Because, well, it was just better. And they were free to come here whenever they wanted since he knew why they wanted to be here in the first place.

"So.........." he started, clapping his hands, "Now that you have your memory, I want you to put it into a box in your brain, ready for you to pick up later. For now, we're going to work on the actual incantation. Get you to perfect that because it's the simplest part of this spell." Was this too fast? Probably.

"Repeat after me: Expecto Patronum. Ex-PEK-toh Pa-TRO-num."

The thirteen year old was practically brimming with excitement while following Hirsch. The journey was starting to wearing on her patience. Though it was an incredibly short trip, to the young, eager Ravenclaw it felt like they were walking to the other end of the castle, rather than taking a few short steps. Even something as quick as tapping the door a few times seemed to take forever.

FOR. EV. VER.

She was about to chide Professor Hirsch to hurry up when the door swung open and Hadley burst through the door like it was a race. And then, Happy Day, the lesson began. This was it. What she'd been waiting for since last year. Okay, first thing to do was put their happy memory in a box. Easy-peasy. Hadley closed her eyes and pictured her happy memory floating into a giant birthday gift. Then she wrapped that box and tied a bow around it. "DONE!" Oh, that was sorta loud. "Done," she repeated at a more normal voice.

"Expecto Patronum." Incantation time! "Expecto Patronum." Did she have this? "Expecto Patronum." Yeah, she definitely had this. "Expecto Patronum."

He'd never been in this room before.

Jaemin looked aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall around as Hirsch led them through a door that, in well over a year of being at Hogwarts, he had never seen before. It was nice and quiet and comfortable, especially after he opened some of the windows. The small Slytherin stepped himself up next to Haddie and focused all of his attention on the professor, fighting his urge to explore the new space.

Put the memory... in a box? A metaphorical box in his brain? Jaemin wrinkled his nose and did his best to visualise this... he could easily picture a box, closed and latched, but he wasn't really sure if his memory was in there. How could he fit a whole memory into a little brain box? But he'd tried his best, so... on to the next part.

He would have been lying if he said he hadn't read and re-read the incantation at least a handful of times since the beginning of summer. Being unable to practice magic, and being overly into the idea of learning it,, meant that he'd done a lot of reading when he was at home... however, he hadn't heard the spell spoken aloud very often at all, and he focused himself on trying to make sure he could speak it well.

"Ex... pecto... Petro..." wait a minute. "PAH Troh nam... num."

This was, to him, somehow the hardest part. Jaemin frowned lightly and murmured it to himself a few times more, putting stress on each syllable to make sure it came out right. "Ex PEK toe Pah Troh NUM. Ex PEK toe Pah TROH num. Expecto. EXPecto. Pa.Tro.Num."

It was frustrating, a bit, to still have such a problem with speaking spells. He'd been doing magic for practically forever now... there was no reason he should still struggle so much...

But he'd gotten it. The boy looked at Hirsch and, very pointedly, said it again. "Expecto Patronum."

MOVING OOOOON.

The excitement, the eagerness....... those were exactly the kinds of things the man liked to see in his students. After all, it was a lot easier to teach someone who actually wanted to be there and learn, rather than someone who was barely listening to a word you said.

It was a definite perk to teaching.

So as it was, Hirsch simply watched them as they practiced, only pausing to shift some items aside in case they needed some more space. It wasn't necessary and he doubted they could cast a corporeal patronus just yet but it helped to keep him busy and active. He didn't like just standing there doing nothing, it was why he moved around a lot while he was talking about a spell or dark creature.

When they were ready - which took a little while longer for Jaemin but he didn't interfere - he nodded at both of them and launched into his next few words. "Okay, so next, the wand movement is incredibly simple: it's a circular motion. It's almost as if you're drawing circles around the area you want your patronus to go. Your target, if you will." And he doubted that they needed a lot of practice in how to draw circles in the air.

"Okay, so to conjure a patronus, you need to use the incantation, the wand movement and the happy memory I made you think about in my office. You need to have enough drive to make your shield come out." Pause. "When you're in a situation where you need this, thinking and focusing on that happy memory is going to be the hardest thing you do because the Dementors or whoever else will try and drown it out. That's why this happy memory needs to be a really strong one." And corporeal Patronuses don't come from weak memories.

"Okay, so that's enough of me talking. I want you to bring back that memory you locked away and try and use that along with the incantation and wand movement to produce your patronus." Watching this was going to be the hardest part.

Hadley nodded eagerly as she listened. This was it, she was learning how to cast the patronus. Oh, of course she was realistic about her chances of actually casting it, so she'd not be overly disappointed if she failed. But she was also confident she'd succeed. If only because in magic you needed to be confident and sure, and believe that the spell you're casting will work. Or it wouldn't work.

Picking a spot on the far wall, Hadley began tracing a circle around it with the tip of Kira, her wand. She pictured a silvery white animal shooting out of wand and then focused all her concentration on the happy memory she'd thought of minutes ago. Letting that memory fill her with joy.

"Expecto Patronum!" The room was hauntingly still and silent. Nothing moved, no shimmering light. Just stillness. She tried again. "Expecto Patronum!" And again. "Expecto Patronum!" And still nothing. It was a bit disappointing to be honest. "Professor? Is it my technique, or my memory?"

Right. Right into the casting part. Jaemin shifted a bit nervously, biting at his bottom lip as he felt in his pocket for his wand. The movement was easy enough, but he gave it a few practice tries anyway. Never hurt, right? As he traced the circles, his lips silently moved in the pattern of the spell, and he watched the tip of his wand as it completed a circle.

Was timing important for this one, like it was for the gravity spell? Hopefully not. Hirsch would have mentioned that, surely. And considering it was a defensive sort of spell... a lot of them couldn't have really convoluted rules, right? If they did, they would be a bit useless. When you had to defend yourself, you usually didn't have time to do a bunch of complicated wand movements.

It wasn't working for Haddie. Jaemin watched her intently, head tilted to one side, wand still held up despite the fact that it had gone still. What was her memory? He looked at Hirsch questioningly before deciding that it was his turn. Time to unlock his happy memory and go to work!

"Expecto Patronum," he said, as clearly as he could. Nothing happened, and he frowned, thinking about his memory even harder. Be happy. "Expecto Patronum!"

HMMMM. Nothing. HMMMMMMMM.
