Default Potions Lesson 1: The One with All the Stirring

Thank you Stefan

Art was stooped over his walking stick. It was all that was holding him up. He'd thought this would have been fun, a good idea, something to get a laugh, but he was regretting it now. The walking stick was shaking under his tremour. Even dear Madame Curie was looking at him, her little nose sniffing about in concern. He slowly, slowly pulled out his chair, walked around it, and sat down. It took him about two minutes to be able to lift up high enough to place his backside on the chair, but there it was. And hopefully he wouldn't have to move it this lesson. It would take a few hours for the potion to wear off.

The door was already open, and the ingredients were lined up under a charmed piece of cloth. Mostly so that he could be sure nobody had tampered with them, but also to keep the ingredients a secret. At least for now. He was starting to think about how he would manage to reach across the desk to lift the cloths... how would he manage that? Well, a class of students, he was sure he could ask one of them to lift it up for him.

  • 2g Hairy fungus, mashed
  • 2g Tortoise Shell, powdered
  • 5g Caterpillar, sliced
  • 1 Bat Tongue, diced

An aging potion was interesting considering the professor teaching them looked like he could literally drop from his seat any moment. Why would they want to do that? Note to self: Do NOT over do it on any of the ingredients. Problem solved. Perhaps they should be making some sort of youthful potion. She knew a certain somebody that would benefit greatly from that.

No matter.

She paid attention as best she could as the professor stumbled through the directions. He really was a cute man in that 'old grandpa' sort of way. AJ sort of wanted to pinch his cheeks, but she didn't know if he would recover. Instead she got up and gathered the required ingredients that she didn't have at her station. There. She was ready to get this show on the road.

Picking up her wand, she cried, "Scourgify." Perfect. Her cauldron and every piece of equipment that she would be using was clean. That was Potion 101. All it took was getting your potions vanished a couple of times for you to remember that little tidbit.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

The problem with resting your eyes for only a few moments was that you could never truly determine how long they rested. Let's face it, he didn't have a clock on the inside of his eyelids. Consequently, when he did raise his head again, he could not only see MOAR bubbles but his mixture was starting to look like semi solid muck.....which....gave him the impression that...that just maybe in that eight minutes, he should have continued stirring. Also. Um. That clock...unless he was missing something...um...so more than eight minutes had passed and ...he....okay. Don't panic Bellaire, just....start stirring again and maybe good things would happen.

WAIT! He was meant to remove this from the fire??? Holy kneazle!!! Quick as he could the burner was extinguished and the gooey liquid no longer bubbled about. This ...was salvageable, yeah?

The Gryffindor picked up his wooden spoon again, jamming it into the mixture. Don't panic. This could be remedied. How did he fix this? Where was the instruction manual? SWEET CIRCE!

Stir stir stir.

Uhhhhh........think Blaise, think. Did he just keep stirring til it thinned out....or...? Did he add the other ingredient and cross his fingers? In his indecision the boy just kept stirring until he either gained more muscle or the potion thinned out again. Either way, he was taking this as a decent sign and went on to add the caterpillar and bat tongue.

Blaise glanced over at his notes again. It said to keep stirring til it turned creamy green? Well. He got the creamy part right. Um. Just. Wow. Um. Uh. Okay. Slowly the colour change DID take place and the boy might have jumped for joy (figuratively of course) but 'cept this was telling him to KEEP stirring for 15 more minutes?????

Hah. No. No thanks. He was done. This potion could be whatever colour it wanted to be. He'd taken it as far as he could and was already sure the texture was off. If they had to test this thing for homework, he'd ask his friends to let him have a sample of theirs. This was not happening under any circumstance and he would not be ingesting this.

Being 'done' as he was, the boy scooped some into the vial and went about labelling it.

Right. First step was cleaning. He remembered that having clean equipment was a very important part of potions. He had his wand out and pointed it at his cauldron first. "Scourgify." That was easy enough and he'd practiced it plenty of times before in previous potions classes. He went ahead and made sure the rest of his tools were clean as well. And he was ready to get started.

Preparing the ingredients first. Good. He first went up and gathered the ingredients he needed, measuring them carefully. He started with the hairy fungus as the professor suggested. It wasn't too hard to crush. A bit required some harder work, but overall it went pretty smoothly. He was ready for the next ingredient. He sliced the caterpillar and diced the bat tongue. There, that was everything. He was ready to begin brewing.

He added the measured prune juice and red wine to the cauldron. Haha prune juice. Because it was an aging potion and old people drank prune juice. He lit the flame to medium, not too much and not too little. He tried listening closely to the professor's instructions at this part because it wasn't written on the board. But Olly was not the best at listening. He was trying though. Maybe it would have been a good idea to pair up with an older student. Oh well, too late now.

Stirring. That was easy. He used his stirrer to keep stirring clockwise over and over and over again. It was strange that there wasn't a set number of stirs like in most potions. In this one they just had to keep going? Until it boiled at least. Olly watched his potion carefully.

Azura watched the potion and the clock intently as she waited for it to cool.. and sure enough it cooled to a deep emerald green color!! She had done it!!

She carefully scooped some of the dark green potion into a vial and then carefully corked it and labeled it.

She said with a smile.. Who knew how long it would last.. but if she got any chance to be older! She was going to take it! She carefully put two drops onto a spoon.. and then put it into her mouth!

She felt it move down her throat.. and for a moment.. she didn't feel any different.. but she looked down at her hands.. and then at her hair.. It looked.. longer?

She turned to the Professor.. an older version of her stood there.. "Did it work Professor? Was she older??

Daxton was fairly certain of the possibility that one of those comments from the professor had been addressed to him, but he was not one to acknowledge any sort of positive attention, and so he simply ignored it.

He had been working at crushing the tortoise shell for quite some time now, trying to get the task done as quickly as possible - due to the fact that his utter lack of stamina would have him tiring out quickly - but not wanting to rush the job and screw it up. The fact that he had very little muscle on his arms made this tricky, even after the onset of puberty had granted Daxton with a little extra unearned strength. On and on he went, using the pestle and his own innate aggression to grind up the shell in the mortar, not satisfied until he was left with a powder a little finer than the consistency of caste sugar. He put down both mortar and pestle and inspected his hands, both of which had now gone similar shades of red after working so aggressively.

According to the information on the board, that was all the ingredients prepped, though he still had replacements and extras set aside for any mishaps, strokes of brilliance, or surges of curiosity. Now, though, Daxton read through the instructions once more, thinking, calculating, and make an impressed face at the thought of all that stirring. If anything would have him failing this potion, it would be the stirring. Daxton tended to tire easily; his stirs would not be uniform if he managed to keep going throughout the entire potion, and the result would be sloppy. He did not like the idea of failing in a room full of people, not if he had actually tried. That was half of the reason he never attempted magic in class, but waited until he could be alone.

Maybe he would stick with experimenting. It was likely everyone would still think he had failed after trying, but he would know the truth, at least.

For the moment, Daxton sat and worked on his notes, writing down some theories, questions he was not able to ask out loud, and observations, things he had thought of or simply noticed happening in class from his quiet corner at the back of the room.

Aging Potion
Ingredients
- 100ml Red Wine
- 10ml Prune Juice
- 2g Hairy fungus, mashed
- 2g Tortoise Shell, powdered
- 5g Caterpillar, sliced
- 1 Bat Tongue, diced

Instructions
1. Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.
2. Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)
3. Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown) (Note: any stirrer is fine)
4. Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)
5. After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion for five minutes, until it changes to a creamy green colour.
6. As the potion cools, it will turn emerald green. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage.

Characteristics: Emerald Green
Level: Advanced
Information: The effects are dosage based; the more ingested, the older one will age

Notes
  • Theory: Continuous clockwise stirring, no anti-clockwise stirring. It is likely that stirring constantly and exclusively in a clockwise direction is what prompts the 'forward action' of the Aging Potion. That is, stirring clockwise mimics the forward action of the clock, winding the clock forward, moving time forward.
  • Theory: Would faster stirs - and therefore more stirs in the allotted time - mean being aged higher, or is this only dependent on the quality of the potion or the amount taken? Would any anti-clockwise stirs nullify the potion's effects?
  • Theory: Would exclusively anti-clockwise stirring create a variation of De-Aging Potion, perhaps with slightly adjusted ingredients? E.g.: the liquid ingredients are those often associated with an older age, would these need to be substituted? (To research later)
  • Theory: Could one be aged so much they are aged straight to their death? Is there a limit to the age one can reach using the potion? (Note: Newton aged sixty was aged to one hundred with the potion, is this the limit? Does the potion have a maximum number of years added, or is it relevant to the drinker's age?)
  • Theory: Could one predict the time of their own natural death, if the potion refuses to age their body past a certain point?
  • Are chronic and/or degenerative illnesses worsened/progressed with application of the potion?
  • Is every aspect of the body aged, including the brain and other organs? In the ageing process, does every cell regenerate and die? Is the aged version of the drinker made of completely new cells, as they would be if they aged naturally?
  • Note: Hadley Denaker de-aged. Why?
  • Note: Abby Valentine aged up after contact with the potion/without ingesting it. Why?

When all that was finished, Daxton sat back and looked right up at the professor, slightly annoyed. He had been thinking about trying to devise away to get the old man up and out of his seat, to see what he could do to make Newton - who seemed dead set on sitting and not moving - to move. But Hadley Denaker had got there first, and it irked Daxton. It would have been fun to try in lieu of, or in the process of, brewing the Ageing Potion.

Because he was still very much opposed to trying and failing in a room full of people. Daxton stayed sat at his workstation for the moment, elbow propped on the desk, leaning his chin on his hand, and continued observing the others in the class all the while wishing that none of them were even there. Mostly his attention was drawn to the situation with now much younger Denaker, the professor, and a fretting Katherine Moss.

Amusing as it was, Daxton was still ever so bored. He looked at his potion ingredients again, and again tried to decide between sitting out of brewing the potion, or trying and experimenting and thereby almost certainly intentionally failing. He furrowed his brow, deep in thought, trying to play out the various scenarios in his head, possible changes to make to the potion, all the while looking intentionally unapproachable should any older student think it was okay to come and offer their assistance.

Spoiler alert: it was not.

Olly was watching his potion carefully as he waited for it to boil. It had to do that sometimes, yes? Soon? How long did it take for things to boil? Obviously he was not much of a cook. Just as he was starting to get bored he saw the first bubbles break the surface. Yay! It was done. Wait. It had to change color too. Luckily that didn't take much longer and Olly quickly added the hairy fungus.

Now stir again. For...TEN MINUTES?! That was a long time. Olly was not a very patient person and waiting ten minutes was not something he was really able to do. Plus he had to keep stirring the entire time? His arm was going to get tired. Olly groaned and propped his head on his non-stirring hand. He tried to look at the clock to see how long it would be until the ten minutes were up, but his mind was wandering. Of course it was, he had ten minutes with nothing to do.

Finally it was up. Finally he could stop stirring. He quickly added the tortoise shell to the cauldron while he kept stirring. His arm was a bit sore, so he switched to the other. He definitely needed to switch if he was going to have to keep stirring for eight (groan) more minutes.

Potions was easy for her because she literally just needed to follow directions. Now, some people might argue that she wasn't very good at following directions, but she totally could... when she wanted to. Starting a potion over didn't sound like a fun time to her even though she actually really enjoyed this lesson. Best to get it right the first time. AJ really wanted full marks too. She was a seventh year now which meant no goofing off. Orrrr keeping the goofing off to a minimum at the very least. Yeah, the latter sounded better. No need to completely lose yourself just because you were going to be better motivated.

Glancing at her notes, she saw the hairy fungus was the first thing up. Awesome. AJ chanced a quick glance to her right, and then to her left. Everybody seemed to be caught up in their own thing so....

SNIFF. SNIFF.

What? A girl couldn't help it. With her clean mortar and pestle, she got right on smashing. Smash, smash, smash. The consistency was pretty uniform and that was exactly what the professor was looking for so AJ was happy with her mashed hairy fungus.

Tortoise shell was up. This was not going to mash nearly as easily as the fungus, but this Valentine was always up for a challenge. She cleaned her equipment again just to be EXTRA sure, and started to mash the tortoise shell. Once she reached the desired result - powdered tortoise shell - the brunette glanced back to her notes.

Fiyero was a little unnerved when Professor Newton said they were doing an advanced potion, but he tried not to let on. That wouldn't be the Gryffindor thing to do! His eyes searched the room for an older student to work with, but they all seemed busy. It looked like he was on his own this time...

He whipped out his wand, pointing at the cauldron. "Scourgify!" He didn't see why he needed to clean a brand-new cauldron, but better safe than sorry, he supposed. He repeated the same spell with his mortar and pestle. So far so good... at least he hadn't messed up the wandwork! Fiyero consulted his notes:
Text Cut: Notebook
Ingredients
100ml Red Wine
10ml Prune Juice
2g Hairy fungus, mashed
2g Tortoise Shell, powdered
5g Caterpillar, sliced
1 Bat Tongue, diced

Instructions
Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.
Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)
Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown)
Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)
After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion for five minutes, until it changes to a creamy green colour.

Now came the hard part...

Fiyero carefully weighed the hairy fungus. Touching it sort of felt like petting his mother's cat... except it didn't go meow when he touched it. The instructions didn't really say how fine it needed to be ground, just mashed. Once he thought he had a fairly uniform consistency, he set the fungus aide and moved on to the tortoise shell.

This just got a lot harder! As soon as he brought the pestle down, the shell flipped out of the bowl and went under the table. Oops... nobody saw that, right? BANG! BANG! BANG! He had to whack the shell with all his might just to break it up into smaller pieces.

Fiyero's arm felt like it was going to fall off by the time he finally had enough powdered tortoise shell for the potion. He sighed. At least now he could move on to the chopping part. He'd helped Grandma Jones chop vegetables in the kitchen many times, so he was feeling a bit more confident about this part. He picked up a bat tongue, but all he could think of as he diced it was that now there was some poor bat flying around without its tongue. How was it going to eat?

As he weighed the caterpillars, his mind wandered back to Herbology class, and he laughed to himself. These caterpillars would've fit right in with Professor Myers's Alice in Wonderland reenactment! He sliced them as thinly as he could - they were supposed to be thin, right? - but they kept breaking apart. He groaned. Ugh, this was so frustrating!

Buuuuuubble, buuuuuubble, toil and... toil some more. Not that stirring was exhausting, but it was soooooo exhausting. Jaemin stared at the liquid in the cauldron rather pointedly, as if it would somehow get the hint and start to bubble sooner. Apparently things didn't work that way though, because it was just sitting there. Doing nothing.

Stir. Stir. Glare. Stir.

A BUBBLE. He had very clearly seen a bubble. Maybe. Hopefully? He stirred some more, leaning in a little to watch closer.

MORE BUBBLES. Definitely bubbling. And the colour seemed lighter, too. Which meant it was time to start adding things. Jaemin tilted himself sideways again to see the board before straightening up, snatching up the smushy fungus, and he carefully tipped it into the cauldron. One little bit stuck to the dish, and he scraped it out with a fingertip to drop it in after the rest. Now it was... more stirring, right? Professor Newton had said lots of stirring?

Ten minutes of it. Which meant... Jaemin spent ten minutes staring very pointedly at the small enchanted clock he brought with his potions equipment to each class, counting down the minutes and seconds and even the milliseconds at some points while he slowly stirred the cauldron concoction with one hand. He didn't look at the cauldron as he stirred, as he was too fixated on the clock, but he had watched Art start at stirring his and was doing his best to keep his stirring on pace with the old-gone-older man's.

Seven... six... five... four... three and a half... three... one and three quarters... ZERO. FINALLY. If there was one thing about potions that frustrated the small, energetic boy to no end, it was that it took so looooong and kept him tied up with inane tasks. LIKE STIRRING. Which he was going to have to continue to do... while adding the tortoise shell powder.

Tearing his eyes away from the clock, Jaemin picked up the small, measured out bowl of shell powder. It didn't look like much of anything, but... it had to be important if it were going in a potion, so Jaemin whispered a quiet thank you to the tortoise that had sacrificed its hardened exterior for science and sprinkled the dusty substance into his now soft purpley-brown potion.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand stir. His arm was getting tired, but he had to keep going for another EIGHT WHOLE MINUTES this time. His eyes flickered from clock to cauldron, back and forth rather rapidly as the potion's colour began to fade. HMMMMMMM.

EIGHT MINUTES!

Rooney gave himself a mental clap on the back as he moved onto the next part of this circus...taking his cauldron off of the heat. In fact, he put out the flames and then put his hand in the area to uh...check that there was no imminent danger. No burns, either. Because he didn't TOUCH anything. He was honestly smarter than that. Not smart enough to avoid putting his life on the line by swinging from a wire on stage...but smart enough to avoid burns on his hands that would prevent him from that exact swinging required for a Tarzan role.

Now, he wasn't sure whether to add the caterpillar or the bat tongue first, but decided to stick with the order given in the instructions both on the blackboard and Professor Newton's voice over. In went the caterpillar, all five grams of it..followed by the bat tongue. Roo honestly couldn't get around the idea of someone using his tongue in a potion... It was such a weird thing. Had anyone inspected their tongue? The bumps on it? The colour? Rooney had. He had looked right up close in his preparation for his first kiss with Miss Charlotte. Not the nose kiss. Because his mouth hadn't been involved in that as much...

Still.. His tongue was not able to be a potions ingredient.

He continued to stir clockwise, only pausing to swap his hands over as the left one was getting complete and utter cramp. Honestly... Why was there so much stirring involved and why hadn't anyone taught him how to get his spoon to stir itself. He did write that down on his notebook as 'further learning'. As a green colour crept into his potion alongside the cream, Roo finally gave up on the stirring as required and began to stretch out his fingers.

More swinging workout. Fingers and wrist and elbows and shoulders. It really was a tiring experience.

Now he waiiiiiiited some more.

Sky was lost because they were brewing a potion that was deemed as advanced for her very first potions lesson. Not that she was new to magic; she'd been around magic mostly her whole life, but she was new to trying her own hand at brewing and magic spells, which was why she felt lost. But she was also determined to try and do well in lessons despite the struggles. She was well adept at reading, which meant that was exactly what she was going to have to do it seemed.

First things first, she needed to gather all the ingredients she would need for the aging potion. She did wonder if the aging potion came with effects of more wisdom and knowledge in the area of potion brewing and spells. Because if so, could she take some BEFORE she had to brew her own?

Eh, probably not.

Cleaning charm. She must have seen her mum use the charm LOADS of time, however, when it came to using it herself, Sky just blanked. She knew the incantation, sure, but it was a lot harder than simply a swish of the wand and saying a magic word. It required real focus. "SCORE-GEF-EYE" Sky practiced aloud. How would she know if she even said it correctly? Was there some sort of magic light that came from her wand to tell her she did it right? Would she see dust and grime magically float off of her cauldron? She glanced around hopefully at her peers for some kind of insight...

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Scarlett had been surprised at how much she enjoyed potions last term - it hadn't exactly been very high on the list of subjects she had been excited to try. BUT she had been surprised at how much she enjoyed it, and now she was excited to try some of the more ADVANCED stuff. Plus the aging potion sounded like SO MUCH FUN!

She walked up to the front and got all her ingredients. It was...definitely an interesting list of ingredients, that was for sure. She took a beaker and then poured herself the wine, measuring out 100 milliliters and adding it to her tray. Now the prune juice...gross. Taking another beaker, a smaller one this time, she got herself an additional 10 milliliters of that as well. She then took her other ingredients and decided to prepare those at her table instead of just taking up space at the table and bothering other people.

She carried her tray back to her station and placed the wine and prune juice to the side before taking the hairy fungus and putting it in her mortar. She took her pestle and began to mash it up, and once she thought it had been mashed enough, she measured out two grams on her scale and then set that aside next to her beakers. She then cleaned off her mortar and pestle before adding the tortoise shell to the mortar and crushing that as well, making it into a fine powder. Once that was done, she measured out two grams of that as well. Four ingredients down, just a few more to go...

She took her blade and began to slice up the caterpillar, adding it to the scale as she went and stopping once she'd gotten to five grams. She cleaned off the blade and then took the bats tongue, which was SUPER small and probably the most difficult thing to cut, and began to dice it. Good thing she remembered what dicing meant...she'd helped her mum do some cooking over the summer when she'd gotten bored, and thank goodness her mum had taught her those basics!

Alright, ingredients DONE and prepared!

Glancing at the recipe, Esme saw that the first thing she needed to put in the cauldron was the red wine and the prune juice. This was obvious since Professor Newton had explained that there would be no water in the potion and liquids were always added first - at least as far as she knew from experience. She wasn't exactly an expert potioneer.

First the wine was added and then the juice. Using her wand, Esme lit a fire under the cauldron and turned the heat setting to medium. She was supposed to start stirring now, right? After glancing around the classroom for a moment she shrugged and then picked up her clean wooden stirrer. Working in a clockwise direction, she stirred away, watching the potion as she did so. The colour was starting to lighten up a little so she supposed that sh was doing things the way that she was supposed to. A nice start, though of course there was the all too real possibility that she would mess SOMETHING up down the road. This was an advanced potion after all.

Once she saw bubbles beginning to form, Esme stopped stirring.

SPOILER!!: Esme's Notes
AGING POTION

Still stirring, Janelle entertained herself by thinking about what she would do after class was over. Lost in thought, she heard her watch beep softly and knew that her ten minutes was up. Looking into the cauldron, Janelle saw that her potion was indeed lighter in color. Relieved that things seemed to be going well, she was ready for the next step.

Janelle knew that she had to keep stirring. To give her arm a break, she transferred the stirrer into her other hand and resumed her clockwise stirring. Now it was tortoise shell time. Picking up the bowl containing the shell, Janelle poured the powder into her cauldron. Then she quickly set her watch to time for eight minutes. The stirrer mixed the powder into the rest of the liquid and after several minutes, it became a nice creamy color. It was kind of like adding cream to coffee. It had a sort of milkiness to it now. Why was it that Janelle could always find a way to relate everything to food? Oh well, back to task.

This time, Janelle figured that she would watch her classmates while she waited for the timer to go off. That should keep her attention for a few minutes at least. Glancing over at Zeke, she saw that he was moving along quickly and was well ahead of her in the brewing process. Everyone else seemed to be moving along. No one had blown anything up yet, so that was a win.

Janelle checked her watch, even though she knew that her time was not up yet. Of course it wasn't, there hadn't been any beeping. Wishful thinking, yeah? At last, the watch signaled the end of the eight minutes. Yay!! Janelle extinguished the flame. She was nearing the finish line. Soon, but not yet. While continuing to stir, she reached for her bowl and poured the caterpillar into the cauldron. After that, she added the bat tongue to the potion. Then she set her watch timer for five minutes. Five minutes and no more stirring. But for now, stir, stir, stir and wait, wait, wait.

It was so strange that potions had to be timed like this. Like really strange. Then again, apparently food was a bit like that, when you were cooking... he didn't cook, because on the rare occasion he was without a parent, there was always a ton of cereal in the house, but his mom cooked all the time. All of her recipes had very specific timing. He wasn't sure how good he would be at cooking... he would have to have so many timers. Cooking took much longer than this stuff did, sometimes.

Eight minutes finally passed, and his potion was a nice warm creamy colour now. Thank goodness, because he had a vested interest in this turning out right... he really wanted to see what he looked like when he was 25 or so. He had to see how much taller he would grow! The small boy bounced a little in his seat and reached to switch the burner off, carefully turning the cauldron away from it. Still had to keep stirring... but now he could add the caterpillar and bat tongue, yes? That was what the instructions said, right? Yes. Good.

He scooped up one bowl to dump it into the cauldron, then the next. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand stir stir stir stir stir. Five more minutes of it and then it would be DONE.

He counted down the minutes impatiently, watching the colour. Was it starting to go green? Maybe a little? His arm was getting worn out, Art. WORN OUT. Did he understand?! But Jaemin wouldn't stop stirring, because if he did then it would mess the whole thing up and that would be the worst.

five... four... three... two... DONE. He timed it down to the second, just in case, and plucked the stirrer out. Now he just had to wait for it to cool down and change into a pretty pretty green. He really liked the colour of this potion a lot. Hopefully it would taste as good as it was pretty...

Speaking of people trying their potions, it appeared that other students had already. There was a girl that looked super duper old how... and was that Hadley?! A teeny tiny Hadley Denaker?! Jaemin slipped out of his seat and sneaked a little closer, looking at her curiously.

"You're little," he whispered, almost gleefully. Cute little itty bitty Hadley! This was so cool! How had she done that?!

...hopefully his potion wouldn't do the same to him.

No... Still stuck kinda on this turtle shell thing. So instead he finished grinding the fungus and made sure to make 6 grams worth... Ok, now back to the turtle shell. He sighed and tried to crush it up with the mortar and pestle, pushing as hard as he could. Philipe blinked slightly, the shell starting to crack after about two or three minutes of pushing. He nearly had given up hope with this potion. But still, he had to make it somewhat smooth, which would take some time. He looked at it, wondering if he could jump between two of the jobs, because his arms were tired of crushing the turtle shell up.

He nodded in agreement with himself and took a small break turning to the caterpillar. So cut it as thin as he could without it falling apart? Sounded easy enough... He grabbed one of them and tried to cut a very small part but sighed as it came off uneven, and the top of it wasn't staying together too well... Ok... The fourth year turned the bug's body and tried again.... it came out a little thicker than what he wanted but it could work right? It couldn't be more than two centimeters right? That should be fine... The professor never said anything about how thin they had to be to his knowledge... Not super specifically anyways.

He kept cutting the bodies all about the same size, making sure he got about 15 grams all together. Should he mess up with the potion and had to start all over he had enough for three tries... Hopefully it wouldn't take that long.

But for now, back to the turtle shell for a little bit and if his arms got tired before he was happy with the texture he'd move on to the bat tongues. For now though he just pushed and crushed as much he could, hoping to get it to at least be slightly grainy and no so many thick shell parts that he was stuck with now.

He carefully measured out exactly 100 ml of the red wine and 10 of the prune juice - BLECH! - and added it to the cauldron. Now it was time to heat it up. He'd seen several if his classmates light a fire with their wands and decided to give that a try. "Incendio!" he cried, waving his wand with a dramatic flourish. Suddenly flames shot up around his cauldron.

Whoa, too much fire. WAAAAAY TOO MUCH FIRE!!! Fiyero frantically tried to muffle the flames with his robes, but it didn't work. He was starting to panic. There had to be a way to out out the fire -and fast! Wait, what was that water spell he'd learned in Professor Myers' class?

;Aguamenti!" He pointed his wand at the fire, dousing it before the flames could engulf the table. Grest, now U'm going to have to start over, he thought as he picked through his potion ingredients, trying to salvage whatever wasn't wet or scorched. His bright blue eyes narrowed as he scrutinized his cauldron. There were no obvious signs of damage, but somehow he doubted being surtounded by a fireball was very good for it. "Is this cauldron still useable?" he wondered out loud, though he didn't expect anyone to answer.

Eight minutes up, Brooklyn extinguished the flame under her cauldron and carefully moved it away from the burner, just to make absolutely sure it wasn’t going to absorb any residual heat that might damage the potion. She wasn’t about to risk failure this close to being finished, and she glanced at her notes once again just to check what the next step was. Obviously there were still the last two ingredients to add. She didn’t really find it that surprising that adding them was the next step, but she also wasn’t planning on breaking the stirring cycle any more than it had been due to her moving the cauldron.

Instead, she took the stirrer into her hand again, beginning to stir yet again, still clockwise and at the same tempo as before. Using her free hand, she added the caterpillar and the tongue carefully, wanting to avoid any splashing or anything else that might be dangerous. If anything, the potion was still hot, so it might burn something. She wasn’t about to deal with a burn on her arm, or a hole in her uniform. Five minutes later, as her arm began to tire again, she glanced at the potion and smiled a little at the creamy green color. First, she appreciated the green, and second, it meant the potion was acting like it should. She hadn’t lost her ability.

Except now she had even longer to wait, for it to cool. She wasn’t about to just sit there doing nothing for twenty minutes, so she reached into her bag and pulled a book out. Time to read until it was time to bottle up her potion.

SPOILER!!: notes

At last, Janelle's watched beeped. What a beautiful sound that was. She looked down into her cauldron and was happy to see that her potion was still creamy looking, but now it had taken on a green color. A smile slowly spread across Janelle's face. She could stop stirring now and she did, thankfully. Janelle took a moment to stretch out her aching arms. Now all she had to do was wait for the potion to cool. Twenty minutes of non stirring time. Yeah, she could do that. Setting her watch to alarm in twenty minutes, Janelle looked around at the mess she had made.

Twenty minutes would give her just enough time to clean up said mess. Gathering up her dirty equipment Janelle began to clean everything one by one. "Scourgify", she said repeatedly, cleaning everything from the stirrer to the dirty bowls. Usually Janelle cleaned as she went along in Potions, but the constant stirring required, prevented her from doing that. Slowly, she began to make a dent in the madness. Last, but not least, Janelle cleaned the vial she would use to bottle her potion. That way she would be all ready when it had finally cooled. Checking her watch, Janelle realized that she still had a few minutes to go before her waiting time was up. She used this time to wipe down her work station. This would make things easier for her because she would only have to do a small final clean up, once everything was finished. Just a few more minutes now.

A quick glance around the room proved that she was moving entirely too slow. How much time had passed? It couldn't have taken her that long to smash two ingredients. She still needed to slice and dice and don't even get her started on the measuring. Okay. That was dramatic. It wasn't that bad, and it would take her no time at all to get caught up, but she needed to speed up the progress just a teensy bit. The younger kids couldn't be done before her. They were all in a competition. Did they know?

AJ made quick work of the caterpillar. It was sliced just right. In fact, she was quite impressed with how even her slices were. They were dead on. Perhaps she could be a chef? Nah. She already had enough of an eating problem. No need to add fuel to the fire.

One long slice of the bat tongue.... SNIFF ....and then she diced it up. By the way, the smell wasn't what she expected. Really, she didn't pick up a smell at all. Weird. It was sort of disappointing.

Next, she measured out 10ml of red wine, and was just about to move on to the prune juice when she realized that she had her measurements wrong. SO WRONG. She had almost mixed the two measurements up. For all she knew she would be as ancient as the professor. Fixing the measurements just right, she ended up with 100ml of red wine, and 10ml of prune juice.

Let's get this potion brewing!!

Hady was never one to complain much about anything done during a lesson. Today though she had to say that her arm was getting a bit sore. All the constant stirring and only in one direction made for some sore muscles.

As she continued to stir she once more reached out and set the timer but this time for eight minutes. And the time sure did move slowly and she found herself humming very quietly under her breath to herself to help pass the time. If it weren't for the rest of the class the sixteen year old would probably be tapping her foot as well.

Oh so slowly the time ticked away.

The ding of the timer found Hady using her wand to shut the flame off below her cauldron. Continuing the clockwise stirring of the potion the girl added the sliced up caterpillar and then the diced bat tongue. Gross!

Stirring, stirring, stirring.

With her eyes on the clock this time rather then a timer she watched as five fully minutes went by. Gosh her arm was hurting now. The contents of her cauldron though were now a creamy greenish color. Now all she had to do was allow it twenty minutes or so of cooling time so it could change to a emerald color and then bottle it up.

Easy enough. Twenty minutes was a long time to wait though. So while waiting Hady took the time to fully clean everything she had used with the cleaning charm before putting it all away. She also returned any extra ingredients back to the professors desk before returning to her own. Only a few more minutes left to wait now. A quick glance into the cauldron showed it was turning a deeper green as stated in the instructions.

All of her ingredients were sliced and diced just right. The liquids were the correctly measured...now. Ahem. Thank goodness for doubling checking. A bonus star for her should be given because that wasn't something she did all that often. In fact, she went as far as to check herself ONE more time. Wow. The dedication was really showing... but, was it for her work or fear of having to start over? Either way, the desired results were attained. She had stopped something bad from happening.

Now that she was super sure, she poured the liquids into her cauldron. Fire was needed obviously, and lighting it was her favorite part because FIRE. She suddenly had an urge to roast some marshmallows, but -darn the luck- she left them in her other bag. It was probably for the best. She wasn't exactly up for sharing.

Fire was lit, and on medium heat which was just the way the red wine and prune juice liked it - apparently. According to her notes she just needed to stir clockwise until bubbles appeared which meant no timing was needed. It really didn't get any easier than that. Plus, the professor was demonstrating.

Stir, stir, stir.

BUBBLES. Bubbles were happening. It was always a huge relief to see results. She must be living life just right. Oh, the color was now a purplish brown? Yeah. It definitely was. Hairy fungus was up. She plopped them into the cauldron and continued to stir. This time she did have to pay attention to the time. Ten whole minutes. Her arm was going to fall off.

Were you really this adorable when you were a kid?" She fired off questions one after the other without barely any pauses in between.

It had to be potions.

She also didn't see that the slices had got bigger, because she was busy cutting her own caterpillar (which deserved about five points for being so BRILLIANT at it, Mr. Newton).

"You're welcome, Denaker," she said and smiled back. She knew 'Moss' wasn't her surname!Moss, but she was going to take it so.

Anyways, she had added wine and prune juice now, so it was time for stirring slowly clockwise (always clockwise) and watching out for bubbles. She realised that they were going to stir always and never stop, so she focused on the speed of her stirring for a bit. For a perfect potion, she had to keep it at the same speed. This... was fine, it didn't tire her arm much, so she started to watch out for the bubbles. The colour had also begun changing, and soon enough, it was dark purple/brown as foreseen, with bubbles forming. Her left hand was still stirring as her right grabbed the FIRST ingredient in line - which was, of course, the mashed fungus - added it carefully, and grabbed the five-minute hourglass. She would just reverse it once it was up.

Arranging all this with one hand while keeping stirring had been VERY hard, and Katherine could see why it was an advanced potion, but she managed all with success - except, of course, while doing all of this, she completely missed Haddie's mistake of stirring in the wrong direction. Because honestly, she sometimes thought that everyone was like her and that they read the instructions 738 times before carrying them out. Anyway, when she did look over, Haddie's potion was going well as well, so she felt even more confident and proud. She - no, they - nono, SHE was going to do it. She was going to brew two PERFECT advanced potion, and then she would get an invitation to The Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers.

Ahhhhh.

When the first round of her five-minute hourglass was done, she reversed it and after ten minutes were up, at last, she noted the faded colour and grabbed the second ingredient: tortoise shell. She added that and side-eyed Haddie's cauldron. She was glad to see she was still going well. She set the one-minute hourglass first like Haddie did and after about two minutes, her potion did take a creamy colour. She was going to do it!!! Although, her arm was beginning to get tired, and even though she was SURE there was a spell for stirring, she didn't know what and it was so tiring... nononono, she kept the pace. She wasn't about to give up, just when she was about to get an invitation to MESoP. It was HER fault for not looking up the spell before coming to this class. Next time, she would look it up, but for now, she had to keep up. So she mentally quit her own mentally whining and focused...

As soon as the five-minute hourglass was up, she extinguished the fire, pleased that Haddie did the same, and while STILL stirring (though she might have slowed down a little), she added the bat tongue and caterpillar. Five more minutes of boring stirring...

...did she still have an arm?..

She quickly passed the stirrer to her right hand and stirred and stirred and stirred. The first thing she would do after class was learning the stirring spell, but for now, she tried to do her best.

FINALLY the time was up! She removed the stirrer more or less at the same time as Haddie, checked the colour (creamy green, YAY!) and looked at Haddie's.

It would turn emerald soon, right?

"You're welcome," she said, smiled and once her own potion was the emerald green the professor had mentioned, she poured some into a vial for him to grade. She carefully labelled it and turned to watch Haddie. She didn't want to drink the potion right away, though, in case anything went wrong and since Haddie was willing to demonstrate since she first had to clean her working area, so she started re-cleaning all her equipment and putting them away in her bag as Haddie got ready to drink. She readied a very smug but also polite smile for the congratulations of the professor. 'Thank you, Miss Moss, for helping your troubled friend. She had improved dramatically under your supervision. I'm sure you'll be a great potioneer one -

................??????????!!!!!!!!!!????????????

NO. NONONONO THIS WAS NOT HOW IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN! Katherine watched the CHILD!Haddie with big, frightened eyes - she wasn't frightened for Haddie, but for herSELF. She then looked at the professor with the same dread - no, - and felt her eyes burning with rage/despair/disappointment/hopelessness.

"Sir!" she rushed to the man, "I swear I was looking and her potion was going WELL and I don't even know where she made wrong IswearIwaslooking but I don't know what happened oh -" She stopped talking abruptly to look AGAIN at what was supposed to be an older Haddie with the hope that if she looked HARDER, Haddie would just GROW.

If this was a sick prank of Haddie Denaker to make Katherine look stupid, she was DEAD.

"You're little," he whispered, almost gleefully. Cute little itty bitty Hadley! This was so cool! How had she done that?!

...hopefully his potion wouldn't do the same to him.

The seven year old blinked at the much older kids surrounding her. Where the hell was she? Was this some sort of strange cult of fashion victims? Because that's what it seemed like. Was she their latest victim? Were they trying to convert her?

And most importantly, could she explore this castle? 'Cuz obviously it was a castle. Duh.

On top of the weird, really old dude with the rat, she was having her space invaded by a new teen girl (Kitty) and probably the biggest fashion victim of them all...I mean, robes and goth make-up? She'd actually feel sorry for the girl if she wasn't yelling and being way too freaky way too close. Kid Haddie's eyes grew wide at the approaching, and yelling girl, and she scooted a few inches away before regarding the girl like she was some sort of freak.

Because, honestly, everyone in the room kinda was...

Half the girl's questions were confusing. Didn't she just say she was Haddie? That was, Haddie assumed, how the teen knew her name. She'd just heard her say it. "I'm seven." Her tone matched the look she was giving Kitty exactly. Duh. "And I'm not little! I'm perfectly average height!" Thank you very much!

And suddenly there was another girl (Mossy) shooting her looks like she was trying to will Haddie to explode or something... uh, no thank you. The seven year old shucked off the ugly robe she was wearing and noticed for the first time she was holding a stick. A black wooden stick with silver and gold--were those eagles?--inlaid into it. The eagles turned into silver and gold streaks that spiraled to the tip.

It was pretty and already in her hand, so she was keeping it.

Free of her robes, Kid Haddie stood to her full 3'9" height. Perfectly average for a seven year old thank you! She was swimming in her ugly school uniform like clothes, and had to adjust her belt a lot to get the skirt to simply stay on. What, they couldn't dress her in ugly clothes her size?

Not too much to ask, was it?

The second girl was muttering something frantically to the old dude with the rat, but Haddie didn't care enough to pay attention. Something else caught her eye. To dolls sticking partially out of a canvas messenger bag. Unknown to the seven year old, the dolls belonged to her--a gift from Rachel representing the two of them. All Kid Haddie knew was one of them looked like her and she wanted them. And then there was another kid (Jaemin)...no, he was just a really short teen, showed up, whispering about how tiny she was.

She was quite done with this freaky cult of the badly dressed thank you very much! Haddie looked at him, then the others, then back to him. "Yeah, so are you." She snatched the dolls out of the bag and ran for the door.

Roughly twenty minutes later and her potion was a wonderful shade of emerald green. Hady grinned and grabbed an empty vial from her bag filling it with the potion stoppering it tightly. With the use of her wand she vanished the remainder of what was left in the cauldron before cleaning it with 'Scourgify'.

Hady picked up her quill and neatly wrote out the label.

Putting her quill away she stuck the label onto the vial. Walking over to the Professor she handed over her labeled potion. Her eyes catching the commotion of a tiny name twin of hers. Oh geez... What in the name of Merlin was going on?! One second the little blonde was talking and the next she was dashing out the door! Hady frown and glanced back at the Professor knowing he wouldn't be able to go get the child in the state he was in due to the potion. "Professor may I go follow her so nothing happens to her?" She knew the girl well enough and could hopefully keep an eye on her until the potion wore off.
