Potions taught by the illustrious Potion Mistress
Kris Airlia

Basic Sleeping Draft

Use/Effect:
The basic sleeping draft is to be used before bedtime in order to aid in sleeping. However, it should not be used longer than a week or two or one may start falling asleep at odd times of the day.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • lavender (a pinch; crushed)
  • chamomile (a handful; crushed)
  • for nightmares: purslane (a pinch)
  • for more powerful brew: ginger (a pinch)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a slow boil.
  • Add lavender and stir 21 times, counter-clockwise.
  • Add chamomile and let simmer for 20 minutes (potion should be pale, clear, purple with a tint of green, though the green may not always be observable)
  • For nightmares: add a pinch of purslane and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise
  • For a more powerful brew: add a pinch of ginger and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise

Notes:
Potion can be stored for up to a month, though it is advisable to brew a fresh batch weekly.

Wit-Sharpening Potion

Use/Effect:
The Wit-Sharpening Potion is used to aid in concentration. It is especially useful if taken before an important exam.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • scarab beetles (coarsely ground; 2)
  • ginger root (cut; 5g)
  • armadillo bile (9 drops)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a delicate simmer
  • Add scarab beetles and stir 5 times, clockwise
  • Allow to simmer for 5 minutes
  • Add ginger without stirring and simmer for 20 minutes
  • Allow solution to cool, stirring 7 times every 3 minutes, alternating clockwise and counter-clockwise stirrings
  • When heat can no longer be felt when a hand is placed above the potion, add armadillo bile
  • Allow potion to sit for 8 minutes (potion will smell foul)

Notes:
  • This potion is sensitive to temperature so be sure to pay particular attention to the fire while brewing.
  • In order to make the potion taste more pleasant, put a peppermint leaf upon the tongue and then, sip the potion. However, do not put the peppermint in the potion itself as steeping peppermint in the potion could alter the properties of the potion.
  • Depending upon the brewing, one should feel the effects of the potion within 10 minutes, though it can take up to one hour.

Confounding (Confusing) Concoction: mild formulation

Use/Effect:
There aren’t many, if any, good uses for this potion, though it is not illegal. It could be used on prisoners or enemies but, as it has unpredictable effects, it is not recommended for such purposes. The confusing concoction is usually studied merely for honing brewing technique or to ensure proper brewing of the antidote.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • jobberknoll feathers (2 barbs)
  • leeches (juiced; 1-2)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a boil
  • Separate the barbs from the shafts of 2 jobberknoll feathers
  • Place barbs in boiling water and stir 12 times clockwise and 7 times counter-clockwise
  • Boil for 30 minutes
  • Add leech juice by squeezing one leech into the cauldron and stir in an unpredictable fashion
  • Keep stirring until potion should thickens (within 5 minutes)
  • If potion does not thicken after 10 minutes of stirring, add another leech and continue to stir unpredictably until thickened
  • If potion has still not thickened after an additional 10 minutes, start another brew

Notes:
  • This particular brew is a mild variation of the Confounding Concoction but, should be effective for several hours if an antidote is not administered.
  • It can be very difficult to discern whether one has ingested confounding concoction. Depending upon how strongly it is brewed and the person it is administered to, a person may only show a tendency to forget things and the effects will wear off in a few hours. Or, with a stronger version, a person can become completely confused and disoriented and could possibly suffer from amnesia.
  • There are no discerning smells or tastes so this potion can be easily disguised and given to the unwary.
  • One side effect of this potion is an increased thirst.
  • People under the effects of the confounding concoction can be very unpredictable.

Antidote for the Confounding Concoction

Use/Effect:
As the name implies, the antidote for the confounding concoction is a potion which counteracts the effects of the confounding concoction.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • jobberknoll feathers (2 shafts)
  • galangal (powdered; 5g)
  • leeches (dried, broken up; 1)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a boil
  • Add jobberknoll feather shafts and boil for 10 minutes with constant clockwise stirring
  • Light galangal powder on fire in mortar until browned and emoty into cauldron
  • Stir vigorously for 5 minutes counter-clockwise
  • Simmer for 15 minutes
  • Stir dried leech into potion (direction is not important)
  • Stir continually for 2 minutes
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool before ingesting

Notes:
You won’t be able to break the dried leeches up evenly but, it will not effect the potions efficacy.

Hair-changing Potion: mild formulation

Use/Effect:
The mild formulation of the Hair-Changing Potion is used to alter the coloration of a person’s hair.

Ingredients:
  • water (500 mL)
  • belladonna (2 g; crushed)
  • nettles (5 g; dried, powdered)
  • moonstone

Instructions:
  • place moonstone in cauldron and add water
  • boil water for 5 minutes
  • add belladonna and nettles
  • boil for 5 minutes
  • reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes
  • stir, 20 full strokes clockwise followed by 20 full strokes counter-clockwise
  • place the clear potion in a goblet
  • dip the very tip of wand in potion and incant, "Coloro!" while concentrating on the color you want the hair
  • rinse hair in 200 mL of potion
  • wait 5 minutes for color change

Notes:
  • Belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade) is highly poisonous and this potion should not be ingested.
  • Remaining potion should be used within 24 hours.
  • Hair color will remain for 24-48 hours.
  • Moonstone may be reused.

Deflating Draft

Use/Effect:
The deflating draft is the antidote for the swelling solution. It decreases swelling and size.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • wood sorrel (whole; a handful)
  • sagebrush (whole; a handful) Lafay's addition= Substitute with 2 snargaluff pods for faster/stronger results
  • aloe (fresh; 10 drops)
  • galangal (powdered; 5g)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a boil
  • Add wood sorrel and sagebrush. Do not stir but, ensure that they are completely submerged and boil for 10 minutes.
  • YANK the 2 snargaluff pod from the flesher by themselves without being eaten in the process.
  • Add whole pods in also making sure they are submerged and boil for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Lower temperature to simmer and add freshly squeezed aloe.
  • Allow to simmer but, for no more than one hour without stirring.
  • Light galangal powder on fire in mortar until browned and empty into cauldron.
  • Stir vigorously for 5 minutes, counter-clockwise.
  • Take cauldron off fire to cool

Notes:
This potion is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Swelling Solution

Use/Effect:
The swelling solution causes objects or parts of objects to swell and enlarge. However, it does not work on non-living things.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • houndstongue (ground; 0.5g)
  • ginger (roots, thinly sliced; 5g)
  • lionfish quills (whole; 3)
  • rattlesnake fang (crushed; 1)
  • dragon saliva (1 drop)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a slow boil in a pewter cauldron.
  • Add houndstongue and stir 22 times in a steady clockwise motion.
  • Add lionfish quills but, do not stir.
  • Allow solution to slowly boil and after about 5 minutes, the solution should be a dull yellow.
  • Add dragon saliva. It will remain on the surface for a few minutes. Wait for it to sink before adding the next ingredient.
  • Crush the rattlesnake fang and mix with ground ginger before adding them to the potion. Stir clockwise for 2 minutes.
  • Remove from the fire and continue to stir for an additional 10 minutes.

Notes:
  • This potion is for external use only and should not be ingested.
  • The swelling solution is not like the engorgement charm. It is an irritant, not just a swelling in size.
  • Where ever this potion contacts the skin it will cause swelling.

Anti-Love (Delusting) Potion from last term
  • bring 500mL water to a boil
  • add 5 drops essence of violet and stir clockwise 5X
  • add 7 drops essence of rose thorn and stir counterclockwise 7X
  • reduce heat to simmer mixture for 10 minutes, stirring counter-clockwise 2X every 2 minutes
  • add 2 raven feathers and boil for 5 minutes while stirring counter-clockwise
(stopping point: remove cauldron from heat and cover, mixture will be viable for up to one month)
  • add 20 translucently thin slices of skinkroot
  • simmer for 10 minutes or until potion turns pink
  • add 3 rat eyes
  • remove from heat and stir until black streaks appear

Love Potion #12
  • bring 500mL water to a boil
  • add 7 petals from a red rose
  • add 5 drops essence of violet and stir counterclockwise 12X
  • add 4 cloves and reduce heat to a simmer for 12 minutes, stirring clockwise 3X every 3 minutes
  • bring mixture back to a boil for 7 minutes, without stirring
  • add 2 canary flight feathers and 4 canary down feathers
  • reduce heat to a simmer, once more, for 10 min, without stirring
  • add 3 newt eyes, remove from heat, and stir counterclockwise until the potion is cooled. You should end up with a light pink potion

Potions taught by the prominent Potion Master

Fire-Breathing Potion

Use/Effect: Tickles and warms up the person you've breathed on pleasantly, cures the breather from small illnesses like flu and fever

Ingredients
  • 3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
  • 5 centimetre square of parasites (mycosis fungus)
  • Roughly 2 centimetre square fire-crab shell (prepared)
  • One fire slug
  • 8 drops of salamander blood
  • Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants—no more than a tablespoon)

Instructions
  1. Fill your cauldron 1/3 with water.
  2. Add powdered goose feather.
  3. Stir clock-wise until it looks homogenous.
  4. Turn the heater to high.
  5. Get your pestle and mortar, crush the parasites, fill the mortar halfway with water and add it slowly to the potion.
  6. Stir counter clock-wise for 7 times and turn off the heater.
  7. Let it cool until no vapour is seen. This should take about 5 minutes.
  8. Do not add the fire crab shell! Hold it with a metal spoon, lower it nicely into the potion just inside the surface—make sure it doesn’t splash water AT ALL—then start stirring 1 time clockwise, 1 time counter clockwise for 12 times in total. Each stir should take about ten seconds for it to spread thoroughly. Once done with stirring, get it out and put it away.
  9. Wait for another minute, then add the slugs—stay away from the cauldron as far as you can. If you’ve done everything correctly, the surface should explode harmlessly and start burning. Put it out with your breath ONLY.
  10. Add 8 drops of salamander blood.
  11. Alternate between two stirs counter-clock wise, two stirs clock-wise. Take two seconds’ break between each group of stirs. Repeat for four times. (So you should stir 16 times in total.)
  12. Add flobberworm’s mucus to keep it in your mouth better (no more than a tablespoon)
  13. Enjoy.

  3. Add 0,2 litre of seal milk to the cauldron.
  4. Turn the heater to high for a minute, then lower to medium.

Strength Potion

  • 2 snake fangs

  3. Wait until it boils and add pomegranate
  4. Turn the heater to medium and wait for five minutes. In the meantime, mix re’em and salamander blood in a bowl and stir them five times clockwise and five times counter clockwise and crush griffin claw (doesn't have to be a perfect powder - just crush as well as you can withOUT magic).
  5. Add the blood mixture slowly and THEN, the powdered griffin claw IMMEDIATELY.
  6. Wait for ten minutes and add one snake fang
  7. Put the fire out and add the other snake fang
  8. Stir counter clockwise once
  9. Drink a cup of the potion in one go, while still hot

Extra Notes
  • Tastes like metal

  • To conserve for a week after brewing, add a cup of ice from pure water
  • The colour is bright yellow
  • For the first few minutes after drinking, sit and let your body and muscles adjust to it. Once you feel fresh, go around being super strong, and don't worry: you can control it.
  • You can omit the heart part by adding a glass of water, counting to 18 and adding pomegranate. You can also not mix Re’em blood at all and add another pomegranate instead, but this will reduce the effect to one tenth.

Amortentia

Effect: Love potions cause a infatuation or obsession for the brewer or the first person seen. Amortentia is the most powerful.

Ingredients
  • 8 flower heads of sneezewort (seperate the petals beforehand)
  • 8 berries of atropa belladonna
  • 8 chopped leaves of Alihotsy (prepared beforehand)
  • One frozen ashwinder egg broken in 8
  • 8 tea spoons of powdered moonstone
  • All the thorns of 8 roses
  • 8 drops of salamander blood
  • 8 table spoons of peppermint

Instructions
  1. Prepare the sneezewort, alihotsy and moonstone.
  2. Fill the cauldron with purified water and add the sneezewort petals
  3. Light a fire under the cauldron and set it to maximum
  4. Add the heads of the sneezewort
  5. Stir 8 times clockwise with a metal stick
  6. Add the berries of atropa bellandonna one by one
  7. Sprinkle Alihotsy leaves in a circle in clockwise direction

  12. Stir vigorously clockwise with a metal stick until the colour is purple
  13. Sprinkle the moonstone in the middle of the cauldron
  14. Throw all the thorns in quickly
  15. Add the drops of salamander blood one by one: with each drop, observe that the potion turns to its distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen.
  16. Add the peppermint spoon by spoon. Stir clockwise with a metal stick slowly until it dissolves.
  17. Wave your wand again.
  18. Put off the fire when you see the spiral steams and smell its aroma.

Extra notes
  • The duration of the effects (usually up to 24 hours) vary depending on factors such as the weight of the person drinking the potion and the attractiveness of the person with whom the potion is supposed to make the drinker obsessed. The effects wear off naturally over time, but can be renewed by administering further doses of potion. Therefore, there is no overdose.
  • The effect is near instantaneous: the drinker appears "pale and sickly" and becomes obsessed with the brewer or the first person seen and excited or dangerously unstable towards others.
  • A hate potion can cancel out love potions and vice versa. There is also a proper antidote.
  • The brewer doesn't have to be present for the effect if it's that sort of love potion.
  • The drinker does not forget what he or she did while under its influence.
  • Love potions mature over time; so the longer it is kept, the stronger it will be.
  • Amortentia's characteristics are a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen and spiral steams. Its aroma is different for everyone and reminds each person of the things that they find most attractive, even if they don't acknowledge or are unaware of their fondness themselves.
  • The smell of Amortentia can change as you see new things and people.
  • Life advice from Blaise Bellaire: You should NEVER give a love potion to a girl who's bigger than you and throws a harder punch 'cause when it wears off she'll remember everything and beat the living Circe out of you. It causes strong dislike after.
