Once allowed inside the office, one of the first things you may notice is the sudden drop in temperature. Though there is a fireplace resting along the back wall of the room, Professor Draper prefers the cold, thus the fireplace will most likely remain unused all term. And if the cool air wasn’t the first thing to draw your attention, perhaps you've found Merlin sitting on a cushion beside the Professor’s desk.
As for the room itself, aside from the seats meant for student visitors and the few lamps that light the room when it’s dark out, most everything is made of wood. The office is quite simplistic. Professor Draper doesn’t see the need in excess or clutter. Instead, preferring simplicity and believing in minimal decor. He does, however, keep a few journals on a shelf behind his chair, along with a book or two sat on his desk at all times.
Best get comfortable on your own, the Professor probably won’t offer you anything while you’re here.

Standing up as tall as she possibly could, Janelle said, "I'm a fifth year professor." Then came the hard part. Why did she think she'd be a good crup owner? This was serious business, but Janelle lips involuntarily turned up slightly in the beginnings of a smile. "Well........I know I could be a good crup owner. I have experience caring for dogs and some other pets and I have done a very good job at that. Even though I haven't cared for crups, other than my brief time with Mikey, I would do whatever it takes to learn whatever I need to know. Mikey and I bonded during class and I think he really likes me. I know that I like him.......a lot. I'm not sure of all of the requirements for owning a crup, but that's part of the reason I'm here today. I was hoping you could tell me what I'd need to do. I'm very responsible and reliable professor and I promise, if I can adopt Mikey, I will give him the best home ever."
Whew. Janelle knew that she was rambling on. Since Professor Draper had seemed kind of minimally interested when Janelle first explained her intentions, she was afraid that he had tuned out during her monologue. Anyway, she was on a mission and she meant to make it happen. Hopefully she had convinced the man in charge.

James found it interesting that the Ravenclaw hadn’t gone ahead to take a seat. And being one that didn’t normally extend the offer, he was just going to assume that she preferred to stand. Whatever worked. James wasn’t complaining.
Folding down the corner of the page in his book, he gently pushed it aside as he leaned further back in his chair to “listen”, sort of. Fifth year? Good. Under the staring gaze of Professor Draper, Janelle was feeling a little uncomfortable. Her confidence was starting to fade, but she was trying to remain positive. When the professor mentioned the crup's tendency to be aggressive towards muggles, Janelle's head dropped, along with her hopes. "My father's a muggle. He's in the Navy, so he isn't home very often.........but, I guess that would be a problem." A big problem. Why hadn't she thought of this. In her enthusiasm to adopt Mikey, Janelle had overlooked that very important fact. Her father didn't come home often, but he did come home.
As for the extra study and exam. Janelle wouldn't mind that at all. She was willing to do whatever it took to have Mikey be hers. The muggle thing though, that might be the deal breaker. "Professor, are crups always aggressive toward muggles? Is there any way that Mikey might like my father?" Janelle couldn't imagine her crup not liking her father and vice versa. Could they maybe be the exception to the rule? "If there is any way you think this could work, I'll do whatever needs to be done. I don't mind extra study. I'd want to learn everything I needed to, to take good care of Mikey." So to answer the professor's question, yes.......yes, this was something that Janelle wanted to do. If it could be done, yes.

James raised his brows only slightly and only for a few seconds before he returned his gaze to that of his normal-difficult-to-read calm. He didn’t speak right away, rather allowed for the gears in his head to keep turning. Knowing very well what he had to say on the matter, but letting Janelle steep in the possibilities for a few minutes. Was she nervous yet?
”A problem, yes,” he nodded. ”An impossibility, no.” Catch his drift?
With that, he pushed the papers he had fished out of his drawer earlier toward her end of the desk, without any real explanation. Well nothing other than, ”Of course you’ll need to fill out some basic paperwork.” Did she see what was happening here? Paperwork about the adoption, of course. ”But before anything is made official, you’ll have to take the exam to obtain the proper license. You’ll also be required to train with me for the remaining months of the term, as to make sure that Mikey will behave when around your father.”
With training, that situation should be just fine. ”And the crup will need to be housed in the barn during the school year, understood?”

Janelle's hopes were fading fast and the long pause before the professor spoke again did not help. Crickets. Crickets were chirping and Janelle was almost afraid to breathe. This was it. He was going to tell her that she couldn't adopt Mikey. She knew it.
And then.............An impossibility no? No? She still had a chance. Janelle's head snapped up. "You mean........I still have a chance to adopt Mikey?" Janelle stopped talking and listened. Fill out paperwork. Ok. Take the exam. No problem. Obtain the proper license. This all sounded do-able.
When Professor Draper said she would have to train with him for the rest of the term, Janelle broke into a smile. "Of course I will train with you. Yes, yes he nodded. Maybe all the suspenseful buildup could have been avoided, but it made things more interesting. And he'd be lying if he said he didn't actually live for the excitement that emanated off students when they were really invested in a creature. Yeah, but he'd never admit that out loud. That'd mean showing that he had a heart. HA. Not likely.
"Excellent," he replied, leaning back easily in his chair. "I suggest heading to the library, never too early to start studying for the exam." Though... Honestly the exam itself wasn't all that hard. He wouldn't tell her that though, didn't want to encourage any slacking off. "As for training... We can begin this week. One afternoon per week should suffice," how did all that sound?

"Good," normally he didn't care all that much about making others wait on him. It wasn't like he was here to serve 24/7. Just during scheduled office hours and then some in between. When he was being generous. However, with a few of his students... He didn't mind. The few that truly cared about the subject material and made an effort. Hadleigh Lynch included. She was among those few he didn't mind all too much. That was a compliment, by the way.
"Well then, you've come to the right place," he had a few come to ask about adoption actually. It was refreshing to see the kids feeling so reenergized and passionate about something they wanted to learn more about. That and... Honestly, who could resist a pup? Not even James Draper, that's who. Walking towards his door, he reached for his key and gave the nob a little jiggle. "After you," he held the door open expecting that Miss Lynch wouldn't mind sitting down for the rest of the visit. They had a few things to cover.
Hady smiled softly. Waiting hadn't been a problem at all. A few minutes was hardly anything and this was about her little crup so it was well worth the couple of minutes spent sitting there.
She had come to the right place. Well of course she had, where else would she have gone? Even so the girl laughed quietly getting to her feet. "Thank you," she answered at the door being held open for her and slipped inside the office taking a seat on one of the familiar chairs, hazel eyes drifting over the room to see if Merlin was around. Such a cute dog he was. She would have to wait for Draper to explain what all needed to be done as she had no idea really. Was this gonna be harder or easier then when she had taken Kyreo home last summer from the creature rescue reserve?

He waited for the sixth year to step inside the office before closing the door behind him and heading over to his seat. Carefully, he stepped over Merlin (who was quite unhappy about being cooped up inside but very excited about having some new company). "This shouldn't take very long," he said as he reached into his drawer to pull out some necessary papers. Formalities, y'know? They made him keep record of these things.
"Are you aware that owning a crup requires the obtention of a license?" He was sure that she was, in fact, aware... However, it was something he had to ask. In case she wasn't. And they could move forward from there.

"I am. I actually adopted Kyreo an orphaned crup last summer from the rescue reserve in Ireland." He knew all about that since he was the one that had informed her of that chance. "However I transferred over ownership to my aunt and cousin since they were caring for him while I'm here and my cousin loves him." Being away at school meant she was away from her pets and if the crup made her cousin happy it was okay. The important thing was that Kyreo had a wonderful home.

Had she not mentioned she had adopted Kyreo? She honestly couldn't remember anymore who knew and who didn't. If it were left up to her chances were she'd have a zoo of creatures. Luckily that wasn't all to possible for her to have.
After speaking she fell silent to listen to what Draper would need from her this time around. His first question wasn't at all a surprise. The mandated exam was something she had to take last summer before bringing the orphaned crup home with her. It had been easy to pass since she had learned about crup care first hand from the healer there at the rescue. "I have. Last summer." The propose of the exam somewhat made sense to her but really a crup wasn't that tough of a creature to handle.

"Just your common sense," he answered. He gave her a firm nod in response to all of that other stuff she said, deciding not to comment further and unintentionally prolong this meeting. There wasn't much more to it, yeah? She just had to show up on the proper days to go over some basic training and then she could adopt her cruppy in peace. All very painless and James didn't mind going through the process if it meant giving a creature a good home.
Merlin, if half his students had the same drive as this one... Teaching would be a much more enjoyable experience. Not that he hated it or anything. But it'd be more enjoyable.

Why didn't they happen more often?
James nodded, taking back the forms and giving them a quick look over. "Looks like you're all set," he replied. "While I will keep you updated on the status of the adoption, are there any other concerns or questions you have right now?" If not, James may be able to call it a day EARLY tonight. Thank Merlin. This type of thing never happened.
