Default Muggle Studies + Potions joint lesson

Right at the lake, on a cold, wintry December afternoon, Professor Newton and Professor Stewart had set up the equipment for their joint class.

It's nearing 5pm, and Art was standing with Professor Stewart, watching as the sun was setting over the lake. He was wearing a beanie, gloves, and a thick, woolen jumper. Madame Curie was safely tucked inside the jumper, her tiny little head poking out just under Art's chin. He had been ecstatic at the thought of a joint lesson with Muggle Studies, being muggleborn himself. He and Professor Stewart were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their students, with piles of wood, a stack of spare cauldrons, piles of stones, and a very large (charmed) esky.

Around the sand, set in a large circle, were logs huge enough for you to sit on. Go on. Have a seat! You'll be a lot warmer soon enough, we promise.

Please remember to follow Professor Stewart's rules & expectations and Professor Newton's guidelines, as well as the other SS rules.
Class will commence in about 20-22 hours. CLASS HAS COMMENCED!

Lesson Progression:
1. Build your own fire!
2. A Question from Ms Kennedy
3. Art getting started with the cooking/"Potions" portion
4. Addressing students and their questions
5. Jaemin, Fiyero, Miranda & an OOC update!
6. Serve yourselves!
7. Professor Art's spooky story!
8. Class update!

Azura sat down on the ground and put a cutting board on the ground in front of her, she carefully got out some of her supplies, a knife, her scales and her measuring cups were all on the board, and then she grabbed her cauldron..

She started to pull out the ingredients, and put the meat down on her cutting board first.. She looked at the recipe card to see what exactly to do.. Okay, she had to cut it into 3cm slices.. All right.. She started to gently cut up her meat, making sure the slices were neat and uniformed.. Really this was just like cutting up potion ingredients..

Once the meat was cut up, she put that aside and started to cut up the cabbage, after cleaning her knife using the water, and wiping it on her robes.. cause uhh she had no towels! Were they even allowed to use magic in a muggle studies lesson? Ohh wait.. She had another knife!

Haha..Oops.. She took out her clean knife and started to cut the cabbage, first she quartered it, just like Professor Newton had, and then she cut those into section, keeping the core intact! There! That was done!

She carefully poured water from the waterbottle into her measuring cup and then poured that into her cauldron.. She peered down into it for a moment before she started to layer her vegetables in there! First a layer of meat went down, and then cabbage.. salt and pepper.. Azura did this until she had run out of ingredients, and there was a layer of cabbage on top! There! She put the cauldron on the fire.. Poked it to make sure it was still warming efficiently, and then.. she put the lid on it!

Timer set for an hour.. Now.. Onto the bread!

Wait... they were COOKING?

Esme could get behind that, yep.

Forgetting all about the cold (the fire WAS helping), the Hufflepuff rubbed her hands together in anticipation. LET'S DO THIS. She didn't even care that she had never heard of the dishes before and couldn't even pronounce the first one... stew was stew and the sooner that it got in her belly the better. And what on earth was bushman's bread? Did they have their own special kind? So many questions... Shrugging, she got herself one of the tripod things so that she could set it up over her fire. Obviously her cauldron couldn't go INTO the flames, that would be rather silly and she would have to get another one. Yep, her parents probably wouldn't be very happy about that. Good thing that she was following instructions.

Once the cauldron was resting where it should be, Esme was ready to dig a hole in the ground by the fire. Not really having any idea just how big it should be she decided to look and see what her fellow classmates were doing and eyeball it from there. Seemed like a good system to her and she was rather pleased with the results. Smiling, she cleaned her hands and headed off to collect the ingredients that were needed for the stew.

Thank Merlin for the Professors setting everything aside for them in crates because even though hers was a little heavy, it was a lot easier for Esme to deal with in this cold than it would have been to collect everything by herself.

Olly went over and got a cast iron pot to put in the hole he had dug. He wasn't sure why that was necessary yet. Why wasn't it made above the fire like the other thing? Whatever, he certainly wasn't qualified to question the methods of things related to either cooking or potions. So he put the pot in the hole and looked at the recipe card. He grabbed his measuring cups first.

"Scourgify." He cleaned the one cup measure and made sure he had the right amount of flour before pouring it into the pot. And the salt next. A pinch didn't seem like a very specific measurement, because it could never be the exact same for everybody. But since it was salt it probably didn't matter that much. He pinched some and put it in, hoping it was good. Finally was the water. He cleaned his measuring cup again and measured out the right amount of water. There were only three ingredients in this bread. That was pretty easy but it didn't seem like enough. Could just flour water and salt really make something? Since it was bread it did seem likely to work and he wasn't too worried about it.

This part was done with his hands. Olly smiled and shoved his hands into the pot. He got everything mixed together and shaped it into a loaf as best he could. Could he shape it however he wanted? Could he have a loaf of bread that looked like a rabbit? That would be cool but he didn't think he was talented enough to do it, so he stuck with a simple oval loaf shape.

And finally he had to add some coals to the hole to actually cook the bread. Otherwise he would just have some bread dough in a pot and that wasn't really what he wanted. He carefully transferred some coals into the hole, careful not to drop any because that would not feel good. And it had to cook for forty minutes. Olly looked at the timer he already had going for the other unpronounceable food. There was just a little more than forty minutes left on that so it worked out well. They would be done at about the same time. He hoped the time passed quickly because he was getting pretty hungry.

Fiyero blinked disbelieving as Professor Newton started speaking. They were supposed to be COOKING?! Er... he wasn't sure how he felt about that. Cooking and him definitely didn't go together! The last time he tried to cook anything, he nearly set his grandmother's house on fire. Well, he'd been half-right about today's activity; cooking was sort of making potions without magic. And, hey, at least the teachers hadn't forgotten about dinner! He glanced at the recipe card Professor Newton had given him. Forry-something? Damper? Boy, these dishes had some weird names! He wasn't going to even try pronouncing that first one; as far as he was concerned, it was called stew. Oh, well... time to get started!

He erected one of the long tripods over the flames, jiggling it a little to make sure it was steady. He pulled out his cauldron, giving it a quick "Scourgify" before hanging it over the flames. So far so good... no mishaps yet. What's next? A hole? Was he supposed to dig a hole with his hands?! That was dumb! It looked like the teachers would've at least given him a trowel or something... Still, he didn't complain. Peeling off the dragonhide gloves he'd been wearing to warm his hands, Fiyero started to dig a hole beside the fire. It was slow work at first - the ground was a lot harder than he thought - but he eventually managed a medium-sized hole. He hoped that was about he right size; he definitely didn't want to have to to that again! There, that was good enough!

He started to wipe his hands on his robes before he remembered there was a spell to clean them, Duh! Okay, now it was time to get the ingredients. He picked up one of the crates from the esky. Whoa, this thing was heavy! What did they put in there anyway?! He set the crate down beside his cauldron with a loud thump. Whoops... he hoped that didn't damage anything! He peered inside; it still looked okay. Good.

Brooklyn’s hope that the lesson was going to become more, well, normal faded as soon as Professor Newton had begun by mentioning a word she was fairly certain was Scandinavian. Maybe going on the field trip had more than one advantage, even though she still preferred the dragons over being forced to cook. Potions were one thing, but she only cooked when she felt like it. Part of her didn’t even care if it meant not eating, and the other part felt like pretending that she didn’t eat meat. Just to be difficult, but then she’d be forced to eat tofu or bean protein or whatever. Lamb sounded just a bit more appetizing, if she had to cook.

First, though, seemed to be setting up. It was much easier in the Potions lab, where everything was basically already set up. She collected a tripod, along with the recipe card, and made sure it was well-positioned over her fire, level and everything of the sort, before she eyed the ground near her fire. She really didn’t want to dig with her hands, especially if they were cooking later. She’d watched him making the bread after all, and she’d prefer not dealing with too much cleaning beforehand. Instead, she dug her hole with another piece of driftwood that hadn’t made it into her kindling, taking the little pot and making sure it fit before she went over to collect an ingredient crate.

Before she began preparing, though, she had to Scourgify. Taking her wand out, even if they were in Muggle Studies as well as Potions, she cast a thorough Scourgify on her cauldron, the cast-iron pot, and her cutting board, knives and everything else. She wasn’t planning on letting any errnt dirt get into her food.

Fiyero opned the crate and started to take out his indredients... a couple of cabbages, some lamb on the bone, a bottle of water, salt and pepper. It all sounded good! There was also a cutting board and measuring cup in there and a knife. Uh oh... he'd always been rather clumsy around knives. "Scourgify," he said, pointing his wand first at the cutting board, then the knife.

He cut the cabbage in half, then in quarters just like Professor Newton said. Cutting the quarters proved to be a bit more difficult, however. He tried to get four slices out of each quarter, but no matter what he did, it kept separating from the core. After a few tries, he finally got frustrated and slammed the knife down. Why did that cabbage keep falling apart?! He had to take a few deep breaths before he was calm enough to try again. Maybe it would work better if he settled for three slices per quarter instead. He sliced the next quarter into thirds; hey, it worked!

If Fiyero thought slicing the cabbage had been hard, that was nothing compared to slicing the lamb! He had to really push down hard to get the knife to cut all the way through. When he was finally almost done, the knife slipped on the bone and cut his hand. "Ow!" he winced slightly, clenching his injured hand around the sleeve of his robes to stop the blood. He looked around nervously. The teachers hadn't seen that, had they? He hoped not... there was no way he was going to walk all the way to the castle to see Healer Murdoch and then walk all the way back here! The lesson would probably be over by then...

But the question remained: how was he going to continue without accidentally tainting the food? Then he remembered the gloves he still had in his pocket. After giving his injured hand a quick cleaning, he put on the gloves. They were cumbersome and made his hands even clumsier, but it was better than the alternative. At least it was just measuring and layering now...

Fiyero gave the measuring cup a thorough cleaning with his wand before pouring exactly 500 ml of water into it. After dumping the water into his cauldron, he added some lamb and a layer of cabbage. He sprinkled some salt and extra pepper on top (because he loved pepper!), then repeated the process. Once he had the top layer of cabbage seasoned, he put the lid on his cauldron. Was he really supposed to just leave it there for a hour? It looked like it would need stirring or something...

Whoah whaddup whats cookin??

Good stuff that’s whats cookin!

One just couldn’t describe the elation that radiated from the Gryffindor Ace when he heard those words from the Potions Master-- or for this class-- the Iron Chef. They get to cook! Camping style! Out in the grounds with exotic meals and old skool techniques. Heck yeah!

Up he goes collecting all the supplies-- tripod, cauldron, that baking pot, and those wonderful wonderful ingredients. Of course he would eat meat, heck he would eat anything, and so he got a sampling of ALL the ingredients. Oh he be cookin' now hehe.

He shoved the tripod over his brightly glowing fire and made sure it was solidly set into the ground. It was gonna be carrying weight after all. Then he looked over the ingredients cards. Hmmm......he should start with the bread recipe first to give it a chance to rise before old skool baking yeah? Yeah.

He grabbed the cast iron pot, then measured out the flour and salt and gave it a mix. Mix mix mix mix mix. When he feels that the salt has been thoroughly distributed, it was then that he added the water. And now here comes the elbow grease! He scrunched and shoved and pulled and pushed the dough as his other hand guided the iron pot round and round, making sure he got everything off the sides. More kneading, a bit of flipping-- and done! Now he lets the dough rest and proceeds to work on the stew.

He prepped the lamb meat as they were told. Slicing it at the right angle and the right thickness yup. Seasoned it with salt n peppa now too. Too soon? Shhh no such thing if youre an aspiring Iron Chef. Flavor is everything! He glanced that the instruction card again. Salt, peppper and... That’s it? Well looks like it’s a pretty simple dish.

But any aspiring Master Chef will always ask this "Professor... Do we have other spices in store? Like... Oh maybe some garlic, onions, some peppercorns, maybe a bit of cumin and rosemary?"

With her Fårikål all prepared and already cooking Hadleigh was ready to move on to making the Damper. First she went about digging a nice hole near the fire but not to close to burn herself while doing so, using the shovel that had been provided for her. Once it was deep enough she set the shovel aside and used her wand to cast 'Scourgify' to clean both her hands and the shovel before making sure the cast iron pot was indeed still clean. It was.

Picking up her measuring cup she carefully measured out only one cups worth of flour adding it into the pot. Next came a pinch of water and then a 1/4 cup of water which she got from the water bottle she had used and set aside earlier. Now came the icky but fun part of preparing the Damper. Sticking her hands into the gooey mess Hady mixed all the ingredients up until it all blended together.

She then formed it into a small loaf like shape keeping in the center of the pot. It looked odd but hey she wasn't a professional at this. After washing the dough off her hands she placed the lid onto the pot. Nearly finished but not quite just yet. Using the shovel once more she very carefully scooped up two shovels worth of hot coals and ash dumping it into the hole she had dug a few minutes earlier. Then she set the cast iron pot right down into the hole onto of the hot ash to allow it to cook. Her other small timer was then set to forty minutes exactly.

With nothing more to do while she waited for her food to cook Hady went about cleaning all her supplies and putting everything away that she was finished with. No point in sitting around and letting time go to waste.

The thought of building a fire didn't really faze her to much. It was simple enough really. Gather wood. Stack wood. Light a match. Light the wood with the match. Hence fire. Easy really. What they would be doing after they had made their own little fire she didn't know and really she wouldn't worry about it just yet either.

Getting to her feet she gathered the proper amount needed before returned to her seat. Stacking the five pieces one on top of the other didn't take much time at all. Picking up the matchbox she took out one match and quickly struck it along the side until it caught aflame. With her now lit match in hand she dropped it onto her pile of wood watching as it slowly caught on fire the flames growing until it was burning brightly before her. Not that she really needed it much seeing as she wasn't cold but at least it was pretty to watch for the time being.

Oh, a Heating Charm. "Very thoughtful, Ms Lynch,'' Kay said approvingly. It was thinking like this that made her happy. "Three points to Slytherin for thinking of your fellow classmates.''

SPOILER!!: Jaemin! <3
Quote:

"It's Song. My name is Song," he said, irritation tingeing his twelve year old voice. It wasn't even the difficult part of his name! It was a word, in English too! It was December already, for Merlin's sake. Surely that was long enough that she could get his name right. "I'm not past tense."

Trying to ignore the annoyed prickling in his skin, Jaemin went about attempting to set his fire. For someone who loved plants and nature, he had never been big on camping and stuff like this... but he was sure he knew enough to get it going. He set up a few logs, then went about shredding a piece of paper, because starting fires was so much easier with kindling. A matchstrike later and the small pile of paper atop one of the logs was burning merrily, slowly but surely spreading its warmth to the logs. Jaemin kept his hands away from it, however, tucking them inside his pockets as he watched the fire grow with a frown.

Sung. Honestly.

Yes, she knew his name was Song. Kay was puzzled for a moment until she realised she had mispronunced Jaemin's name. She could have face palmed herself. "I'm sorry, Mr Song. I made a mistake.'' Whether he accepted the apology or not, it was up to him. The look alone that he had given her was rather hurtful. Whatever happened to persons sometimes made genuine mistakes?
*******

Kay moved around among the students, checking to ensure they were all getting along just well. She kept her eyes especially on the younger ones. They had all seen how she struck the match to start the fire so she hoped that none of them would sustain any injuries.

"Excellent work, all of you! Take a moment to warm yourselves up.'' It was certainly warmer now that quite a number of fires were lit. She trusted that the ones who had a difficult time with the cold felt better now. At that moment, Art stepped in to give his instructions to everyone and Kay gave him her full attention. She would be making this dish too. Just Art talking about the foods made her hungry. She really wanted to try them both as she never had before.

Kay set up her tripod then gathered her ingredients, eyes frequently checking on the students. She manually cleaned her cooking apparatus. "Remember to use the rags provided when cleaning,'' she called to the class. She had heard a few Scouring Charms being class but would let that slide since this was also a Potions lesson. She focused on her cabbage, cutting it as required. Next, she added water to the cauldron.

The meat was cut and added followed by a layer of cabbage. Both had been seasoned. The process was repeated until all of her ingredients were used then she put a lid on the cauldron and allowed for the meat to be cooked. While she waited for this to be done, she moved on to doing all the necessary for the damper. When she was done with everything, she once again set out to interact with the kiddos.

Igredients (serves 6)
2 ½ kg lamb on the bone cut into 3cm slices OR a meat alternative for vegetarians
2 green cabbages
500ml water
Salt + pepper

Method
Cut the cabbage into quarters down the core and cut each quarter into 3-4 wedges (keeping part of the cabbage core intact on each quarter, to hold it together).
Pour the water into the cauldron.

Place a layer of meat/vegetarian protein, then a layer of cabbage into the pot, seasoning each layer with salt and pepper.
Repeat this layering process until you have used up all the ingredients. The final layer on the top should always be cabbage.
Cover with cauldron lid.
Cook for 1 hour until the meat is tender.
Serve with damper and juices from the bottom.

Food! That sounded great to Olly. He knew that he was going to get hungry really soon, even if he was feeling fine right now. It meant that the potion - er, dinner - would be done right about when he most wanted it. Hopefully. He went to get a tripod stand from the professor and set it up above his fire. It was pretty cool. He had sort of been wondering how exactly they were going to be able to make a potion, but it all made sense now. The digging of the hole was not completely clear but he supposed it would be eventually. Everything always had a reason. His job was just to follow the rules, and he was usually fine with that. So he dug the hole.

Alright, now it was time to actually make the potion. Food. Why were they making food again? This was potions class, not cooking class. Oh well, Olly didn't care, he was getting food out of it. Food that he couldn't pronounce, but food nonetheless. He took the ingredient crate, and then took out all of his supplies. Scales and other measuring equipment were the most important at the moment because he needed to make sure he had the right amount of ingredients. And a chopping board, that was very important too because it was time to chop the cabbage.

He cleaned his knife with a quick "Scourgify," and started chopping. Quarters and then wedges. He got four wedges out of most of the quarters, but only three out of some of the others because the sizes of the quarters were not exactly uniform. He repeated the process for the second cabbage. And he had to cut the meat too. He put that on the cutting board and cleaned his knife again. He cut it into slices, doing his best to get each of them as close to 3cm as possible. At least if it wasn't exact, it wouldn't matter as much in cooking as it could in potion making.

Next was putting water in the cauldron. That seemed easy enough. Olly took out his wand and was about to cast the spell when he saw the professor using a water bottle. Sure enough there was one in his ingredient crate. He raised his hand. "Sir, why can't we just use aguamenti?" That's certainly what he wanted to do, but since the professor didn't, he wasn't going to either. He cleaned his measuring cup - "Scourgify." - and measured out 500 mL from the water bottle to pour into his cauldron.

Hearing Oliver's question, Kay stopped by him first. "Since this is also a Muggle Studies lesson, Mr Thomas-Borzekowski,'' she replied with a beam. "You're doing a great job so far. Keep it up!''

SPOILER!!: Miranda! <3

Kay was utterly puzzled. Why was Miranda standing there with her arms crossed and not making an effort to begin cooking. "Ms Blaze, is everything alright? Do you need help with something?''

Hearing the outcry of pain, Kay whirled around? Which one of the precious students had gotten hurt? "Mr Jones.'' Her eyes had found him because the cry seemed to have come from his direction. "Did you hurt yourself?'' She couldn't see any injuries...

SPOILER!!: Curly Top Tenny! <3

Hearing another question, Kay directed her attention to Tenacious. She shook her head. "None, Mr Salander. Salt and papper are the only flavours for this recipe. She was certain Art would want to stick to the traditional one.

All right, now it was onto the bread. Azura put her cutting board down and stacked her utensils on top of it neatly, before standing up, brushing herself off and moving over to grab a cast iron pot, a lid, and a shovel!

The near teen moved back over to where she had set herself up, weaving through her other classmates to do so.. She could see them hard at work and could already smell some of the delicious smells coming from their cauldons! Her stomach rumbled slightly..

Was she actually hungry? Food hadn't tasted good in awhile to her.. it tasted like ash.. or perhaps just sand or dirt.. Nothing really and it was hard to swallow, but perhaps making it with her own hands was taking her mind off of everything?

Whatever it was.. she moved over to her fire.. and then took the shovel and made her hole in the ground a little nicer and bigger.. Then she dug around in her ingredients and measured out what she needed for the bread, 1 cup of flour went into the pot.. and she picked up a pinch of salt and sprinkled that in, before measuring out her water and pouring that in as well. There! She rolled up her sleeves and then stuck her hands into the dough and started to mix it!!

Blech.. okay.. kinda gross.. but she kept mixing up the dough until it was all mixed together, she had baked bread before, but never like this! She formed it into a round loaf and then pulled her hands out and put the lid on!

All right, now for the hard part..

She picked up the shovel and ever so carefully put some of the embers and the ash into the hole! EEKKK! It was hot! She could feel it on her face as she pushed the shovel into the fire and then moved a heaping shovel full of coals into the hole.. and then carefully repeated the process.. Once she was done.. She put the pot in the hole over the coals.. and set a timer for 40 minutes!!

There!

She then started to tidy up her workstation, she rinsed off all of her untensils and measuring cups with the remaining water in her bottle and carefully wiped them clean with rags and stuck them back in her bag.. She put the ingredients back into the crate, she had some left over.. and then grabbed some marshmallows..

There!

Now to wait!

Right... they were making food. And apparently they were making a lot of it. Jaemin blinked at the recipes that Art had handed out to them, wondering why the portions hadn't been sized down for the sake of class... he wasn't going to eat six servings of this stuff, and surely there wasn't enough space for so much leftovers in the kitchen? And they didn't have fridges in their dorms... did they? He looked around suspiciously, as if maybe he had just been missing it all this time and the others hadn't bothered to tell him.

But. That was whatever. If they were supposed to cook this much, he'd... cook this much. Maybe Professor Newton had a plan for it or something. The small Slytherin went about gathering his supplies, heading off for the tripod thingy first and setting it up a bit clumsily. He much preferred the little burners from class to this... it was much more controlled. But once he had the tripod set up and the cauldron over the fire, he wasn't so bothered about it anymore. He would just go step by step and hope everything turned out okay... or he'd be stopping in the kitchens to bother some house elves right after class.

Now to dig a hole. It didn't seem like it had to be very deep... Jaemin looked around himself and finally found the small trowel for digging, and went at it, making sure the hole looked as similar to Professor Newton's as possible.

Whether he accepted the apology or not, it was up to him. The look alone that he had given her was rather hurtful. Whatever happened to persons sometimes made genuine mistakes?
Hmm?

"Once is a mistake," he murmured when the Muggle Studies professor spoke to him again. She'd said his name right this time, at least. "Twice or more usually isn't. You wrote it like that on my class report when you gave me failing marks for not drawing, too."

Which had doubled the sting of failing a class for reasons that didn't seem fair to him. The small Slytherin shrugged, clearly not caring to carry on the conversation, and stood up to get his ingredients. Got cooking to do.

Default Post 1 - Preparing Fårikål
♥ Belive ♥ Slytherin ♥ 08/01/14 ♥

Did someone say food?! Niomi loved food. She was glad she will get food out of this class. Also, the food was foreign! She was excited about this. Food and cooking where something she always loved! So far, she is loving this joint lesson!

Now, she needed to gather the ingredients for Fårikål. BUT first, she needed a tripod stand. Getting a tripod stand, she placed it above the fire, like Professor Newton did. NOW, it was time to get the ingredients. Niomi needed:

Quote:

She read every ingredients carefully off her note card. Niomi gathered all the needed ingredients. Niomi watched closely how Professor Newton prepared the food. Now, it was Niomi's turn.

Looking at the lamb, Niomi got grossed out. She was never the one to prepare the meat, others did that step. She had to get curious to do this. After looking at it for a while, Niomi picked it up, with an unhappy face, and placed in on the cutting board. "Why me," she questioned to herself. Taking the knife she began to cut the lamb into 3cm slices. She loved meat, but not to prepare it. Once that was done, she was happy and relieved! Time to move onto the next step.

Taking the 2 green cabbages, Niomi started to cut it up, starting from the core. This was very easy thing to do. Niomi visited it fast and set it aside. Next, another easy set, measuring the water. 500ml water was measure and poured it into the cauldron. Once the water was in the cauldron, Niomi continued the layering process. One layer of meat, a layer of cabbage, sprinkle or salt and pepper, and then repeat. On the last layer, Niomi added the last of the cabbage and the salt and pepper.

Preparing the Fårikål was now finished. Niomi put the cauldron lid on top. Taking the timer, she set it for one hour. It would not be a good thing to forget about the Fårikål cooking. With the timer set, she moved on to the next disk, preparing the Damper.

Carefully Esme checked the quantities of each ingredient as Professor Newton had asked them to. Everything seemed accurate so there was no need to make adjustments. Good. She could get on to cooking then.

Knife, cutting board, scales, and measuring cups were set up in a little working area and everything got a thorough Scourgifying. Even though she had cleaned her cauldron previously it probably could do with one too, so she quickly got that out of the way as well. There. Professor Newton couldn't say that she was being a bad student because she was upholding the rules of using clean equipment. Not that he was like to call her a bad student in the first place... Still, the fact remained that he would be rather pleased to see that she took good care of her equipment.

The lamb was set on the chopping block, Esme making a face because she didn't like the feel of raw meat. Bleh. It always felt disgusting. Her least favourite part of helping her mother cook was always handling the raw meat; thank Merlin she wasn't asked to do it that often, instead being in charge of vegetables. Continuing to make a face, she proceeded to cut the lamb up into slices that were as close to 3 cm length as they were ever going to get. Onto the scale the pieces went, and she weighed them until she had 2.5 kg worth. Into the bag the remaining bits went and it was time for her to slice the cabbage.

Cutting board, knife, and scale as well as her hands were giving another Scourgifying and she was ready to proceed. Keeping in mind that the core needed to remain attached to each slice, she cut the cabbage in half starting across its core then each half was cut in two and each quarter cut into three pieces. That done, 500 mL of water was measured out and added to her cauldron. A layer of lamb was added to the cauldron and covered with a later of cabbage before getting a sprinkling of salt and pepper. This process was repeated until there was cabbage at the top.

After placing the lid on her cauldron, Esme gave her hands and equipment another thorough cleaning before putting everything that wasn't needed for the next part away. In an hour her stew would be ready and she couldn't wait to eat it.

SPOILER!!: Recipe Card
Fårikål
Ingredients (serves 6)

First the iron pot. Niomi walked over to grab an iron pot and brought it back over to her station. Before she placed the iron pot down and got right into cooking, she need to dig a hole in the ground.

Niomi began to dig her hole. Once the hole looked close enough to put the pot in, she took hot coals and ashes from her fire and placed them in the bottom of the hole. Then, she grabbed the iron pot and placed it into the hole. Now, time to gather the ingredients. Once again, like when she cooked the Fårikål, she read her note car on what ingredients she will need.

Walking over to the ingredients area, she gathered all she needed and returned to her cooking station. Once Niomi was back in her spot, she read over the method to make the Damper. Even if she watched Professor Newton cook and prepare the Damper, she wanted to recall what to do first.

SPOILER!!: Method

Add salt to flour.
Add 1/4 cup water.
Mix and form into a round loaf.
Dig a foot-deep hole near a fire and add 2 shovels of hot coals and ash.
Add damper mixture to a camp oven (traditional cast iron round pot with lid).
Cook for 40 minutes.

First, Niomi added salt to the flour and then a 1/4 cup of water. Taking the mixture, she began to mix it together until it was round. This was very easy. Niomi didn't expect it to be this easy. All she had to do was make the loaf. Niomi shrugged her shoulders and moved on to placing the loaf into the iron round pot. She placed it into the pot and put the lid on top. Looking at the recipe card, she saw it needed to cook for 40 minutes. She set a second timer for 40 minutes.

The cooking was done. Niomi paused for a moment and took a deep breath. Time to clean up before she ate any marshmallows. Maybe someone will join her, while the food cooks.

Janelle periodically moved close to her fire to warm herself up. She was feeling a little better now that all of the fires had been lit. Then Professor Newton explained what they would be "brewing". Dinner! Janelle was in. Anything that had to do with food was ok with her. Although, this meal plan did sound a bit labor intensive. She was no stranger to cooking, but this was something that was not in her repetoire.

Pen out, Janelle took notes as the professor went through the important information. Fortunately they were all given recipe cards, so she didn't have to write that part down. It was time to get the show on the road, so Janelle went up and got a tripod. Returning to her work area, she put it aside for a moment and prepared to clean her equipment. Since this was part Muggle Studies, she figured she had to do things the old fashioned way.

Janelle got some bottles of water and rags. She washed her hands and then she set to work, cleaning her cauldron and the other items that she felt necessary for the task. As she washed, she flashed back to summers washing dishes at her grandma's house. Good times. Her grandmother would probably have no trouble cooking Fårikål. Hopefully Janelle wouldn't either. Once the clean up was done, Janelle grabbed the tripod and set it up. She placed her clean cauldron atop the tripod and made sure it was steady. Then she knelt down beside the fire and dug a small hole, just like the professor had done. Finally, Janelle went and got a crate of ingredients for herself. She washed her hands again and deemed herself ready to cook.

Now that she had her crate of ingredients, and had cleaned all of her cooking and cutting equipment, Maddie settled down and started slicing and dicing. Rather monotonous work, to be honest, but important to the recipe.

She wasn't particularly fussed about dealing with the lamb as she'd used more than her fair share of stomach turning ingredients in potions, though her nose did wrinkle slightly at the noise it made when she set it on her cutting board. As she worked, the Ravenclaw made sure to be as precise as possible with her measurements, wanting her slices to be as accurate as possible. She was a bit of a perfectionist that way, you know. It took her a bit longer because of this but once done, she measured the meat, set the pieces aside that she'd need, and returned the rest to the bag and then crate. Next she cleaned the board and her knife. Her hands, too. One never could be too careful when dealing with meat.

Cabbages came after and Maddie made much quicker work of cutting those, finding that she was more confident in her measuring abilities given the size requirements listed on her recipe card. She set the wedges aside, too, cleaned her hand, and then moved on to fill up her cauldron with water.

After filling her cauldron, the measuring cup making the work that much easier, the brunette cleaned the equipment she'd used and set it aside. Then she began the layering of meat and cabbage. Meat and cabbage. Meat and cabbage. Again, monotonous.

Each layer had been seasoned with salt and pepper, and each received a thoughtful glance from the seventh year. That was a lot of lamb in her stew and she wasn't sure why the layering was necessary but would inquire about that later.

Covering the cauldron with the lid, Maddie considered the time and then started prep on the bread.

Cooking. Rooney was torn between tending to his fire and looking at the recipes that were being given out. It was definitely questionable why they were making so much food. Each of them were making a portion that served six people. How..was that right? There were probably so many other uses for all of this food. And Roo had eaten between classes, just before coming to this one. So he was particularly full and not really up to wating…whatever this was. And cabbages were not his favourite of things. Especially so much cabbage that it involved layers. There really was such a thing as too much cabbage, dear Professors. He spared a moment to look between a second year and the Muggle Studies Professor sharing a little…something. Gosh.

He let it pass, ignoring it, because he had stuff to get doing. Like setting up his tripod and cauldron and hole digging. Seriously… Hole digging. This was a ridiculous class. Rooney didn’t know if it was his new perspective on things or…whether this really was a dreadful combination of classes. Maybe Professor Stewart was Professor Newton’s daughter or granddaughter or …wife?? Was that possible? Either way, she really was everywhere and it seemed like the only part of this class that connected to Muggle Studies was not being able to use their wands for the fire of the water. Not…really worth it, in his opinion. But he set everything up as required, and dug a hole for whatever he would need it for. And when that was done, he checked over the recipe once more. Right. Sure. He had this. He was good in the kitchen. Miss Sophie Brown had told him that when Ravenclaw house had their cooking thing a few years ago.

Together with other students, Rooney collected his crate of ingredients and headed back to his fire to put it nearby, and went back to get himself enough water for the recipe and more to clean everything down. He gave his cauldron a scrub with a rag and the rest of the tools he thought he’d knew that he would need for cooking. And then washed his hands. Digging was a dirty task and so was cleaning other things. Food prep was supposed to be sanitary. Hand needed to be cleaned. And he needed to get on with the cooking right now.

After cleaning the cast iron pot and considering that said pot would make an amazing makeshift weapon in the event that such a thing would be needed-one never knew at Hogwarts-Maddie placed it next to the hole she'd dug and raised her eyebrows. Bread cooked in a hole. Okay, then. Muggles were interesting creatures.

Using a clean measuring cup, Maddie added the flour and then the pinch of salt, mixing that first. Once her cup had been cleaned, she measured and poured in the water. Her hands were cleaned again before she made any attempt to mix the dough, noting just how much of the elements could get into her food and spoil any attempt she was planning on making to eat it. Cooking outside really was rather silly. Messy, too. She was not a fan of mixing the dough by hand and wasn't even confident it was getting mixed as well as it should've been but she did what she could and cleaned her hands once done.

Placing the cover on her pot, Maddie got up and retrieved a shovel so she could go retrieve some hot coals and ashes from the fire which had been going for a while by now. She was careful not to burn herself of disturb her cauldron in the process. After adding the mixture to the hole, the pot was placed on top and her bread was officially ready to cook.

More cleaning occurred and Maddie found that she wasn't really hungry for marshmallows. She did, however, wish that there was hot chocolate. She could go for some of that.

Janelle peeked to her side and saw that Echo seemed to be doing just fine with her cooking. Turning her attention back to her work, she opened the crate of ingredients. Janelle put her cutting board in front of her and a bowl and her scales to the side. Then she got her lamb out of the crate and placed it on the cutting board. Janelle got her clean knife and began to cut the meat into what she hoped were 3 cm slices. She sliced and sliced and then weighed the meat. 2 1/2 kg of lamb went into the bowl. There was a little bit left and Janelle put it away so it could be returned to the professor.

Part one completed, Janelle washed her hands yet again because.........raw meat and all. She also washed her knife because she would need it to cut the cabbage. All ready for the next step, she retrieved her cabbage and cut it into quarters. Then she washed the cabbage because she wasn't sure whether or not it had been cleaned before. When it was clean, Janelle cut the quarters into three wedges each and placed everything to the side. She picked up her measuring cup and took out a bottle of water. Janelle poured water into the cup, until it reached the 500 ml mark. When she had the right amount, Janelle poured the water into her cauldron and checked her notes for the next step.

It was time to layer, so Janelle covered the bottom of her cauldron with slices of lamb. Then she carefully laid wedges of cabbage on top of the meat. Once she had her first two layers, Janelle sprinkled them with salt and pepper. Not too little, not too much. The secret to cooking was knowing how to season food properly. Janelle hoped she had gotten it right. When she finished her seasoning, she alternated layers. Lamb, cabbage, salt and pepper. Lamb, cabbage, salt and pepper and so on until she finished with the last of her cabbage. Janelle gave her last layer a sprinkle of salt and pepper and was thankfully done. She reached over for her lid and placed it on top of her cauldron. And now she had an hour to wait for the stew to be done. She couldn't wait. Janelle set her timer and reviewed her notes for what she needed to do next. She would wash her dirty things and then proceed to her Damper.

Now that he was ready to get cooking, it was time to start. And get on with it, because he knew there was an hour that he needed to be cooking it for and it was going to be even colder out here by that time. He wouldn’t want to be out here at all come then. And hopefully he was still full and wouldn’t have to eat whatever monstrosity they were making in class. Placing out his cabbages onto his chopping tray, Rooney took his knife to them and sliced through the core and cabbage in a cross shape. Quarters. What was next? He had to cut that again? So he did that to both of the cabbages and made a face as he cleaned off his knife. Cabbage wasn’t his favourite thing. Really.. Grooooossss.

Once that was washed, he set it aside to dry off a little, and poured a whole 500ml of water into his cauldron, making sure that no water got onto his fire. That would have been disastrous. Because his cauldron had been heated thoroughly and it was ready to get on with the water that had been added. Heated water had no bacteria. Boiled water, anyway. Roo wished that he was indoors practicing for the auditions he had coming up. They were really important to him and cooking like this – things he wouldn’t make ever again – just weren’t. Moooooving on. Stuff to do. Time to crunch. Touching meat was Rooney’s least favourite thing, especially lamb. He found it to have a different texture when cutting, and he had to cut it off of the bone. Absolutely ridiculous. Couldn’t someone have done that for them? He liked meat. He wasn’t one of…the strange people who didn’t. But there was something animalistic about ripping it from the bone. In the outdoors.

They looked like animals.

Once it was sliced up enough, Roo placed a handful of the meat into his cauldron, followed by a similar amount of cabbage. And then he topped it off with a a pinch of both salt and pepper. This carried on until Rooney had used up all of his meat and cabbage and could take a deep breath. He wouldn’t have to deal with this cabbage for an hour now! Except it was going to be soggy and moist now. Even grosser than the meat. He covered up the cauldron with it’s lid and set his timer for an hour. Finally, finally, finally! No more cabbage for an hour.

‘Remember to use the rags provided when cleaning’…Brooklyn had heard that. Just as she had disregarded it, merely because she felt like following the same procedure she’d done for every Potions lesson ever. She hadn’t heard anyone being reprimanded for using the charm, either, which meant that it wasn’t really that big a deal. They weren’t making the meal anywhere at risk of exposure to Muggles anyhow, so one little charm didn’t hurt anyone. Instead of worrying over what they’d been told, she had applied herself to going through the ingredients crate that she’d brought over to her little fire/workspace.

Yes, there appeared to be two timers, but Brooklyn didn’t see why. She disregarded both for the moment, instead taking the lamb out and carefully slicing it as they’d been instructed to. Occasionally she stopped and cleaned the knife with the provided rag, just because it was there. In any case, after a few moments she had the correct amount of sliced meat, measuring it just to make sure. She left it on the bowl of the scale for the time being, as she took out the cabbage and started cutting it. In half, then in half again, then in thirds. All she had to do was pretend that she was in the Potions lab, following the instructions for a potion. It was that easy, really, beginning with measuring out the appropriate amount of water from the provided bottle and adding that to her cauldron.

Once the cabbage was cut, she started the layering process, starting with a layer of meat and sprinkling it with salt and pepper before layering the cabbage on top. She added more salt and pepper, and then continued layering in alternate meat and cabbage layers until she finished with a layer of cabbage. Sprinkling more salt and pepper, she then set the lid on the cauldron and went back to her timer.

One hour set, and now she was going to see if she could mix up the bread in twenty minutes.

Okay, Damper time. Janelle went and got a cast iron pot. Then she found her leftover washing water and rag and proceeded to wash her pot and lid. Janelle looked around to make sure that everything else that she needed was clean and it was. She reached into the crate and got out the flour. Her water and salt were already at hand.

Was that the stew she was smelling or was that her imagination? Janelle was hungry and the aroma was definitely tempting. She tried to concentrate on her Damper and forget about the fact that she was starving. Janelle got her measuring cup and measured out one cup of flour. Then she poured it into her pot. Having a one pot dish sure did make things easier. Less to clean up........was always a good. Thing. Janelle took a pinch of flour and added it to her flour. Now she just needed water. There was just enough in a bottle to fill her liquid measuring cup to the 1/4 cup line. Janelle poured the water in with the dry ingredients. She put her hands into the mixture and began to work it together. Feeling the separate ingredients come together and become dough, Janelle kneaded it until it felt just right. When it was good she formed it into a loaf and patted it until it was perfectly smooth. She centered it in the pot, put the lid on and it was ready.

Janelle got one of the shovels and went over to her fire. She scooped up a shovels worth of coals and ashes from the fire and carefully carried it to to her hole. She dumped it in and put the shovel aside. Picking up her pot, Janelle put it into the hole in the ground. Done. She set her watch for 40 minutes. It looked like the stew and the bread should be getting done at close to the same time. In the meantime, Janelle got a marshmallow and a stick. She pierced the marshmallow with the stick and stuck it into the fire. When the marshmallow is nice and black, she took it from the fire. After it cooled, she popped the crunchy, gooey mess into her mouth. Mmmmm. Just like she liked it. Janelle took a moment to clean her remaining dirty measuring cups and then went for another marshmallow.

The professor's encouragement to use a rag to clean their cauldron didn't go unnoticed by Dot, who had used magic, but she wasn't in trouble. That was the good news. The bad news was the giant head of cabbage that needed handling, and here was Dot with her puny potions knife. She slumped off to grab her ingredients, thinking wild thoughts about how to cut her cabbage in an intelligent way with limited cutting space and a puny knife.

And no magic, because the Muggle Studies part of things was making itself known.

Cutting the meat was easy enough, although once again, Dot really wanted to wash her hands. Vigorously. Handling raw meat just made her feel grubby. Once the meat was cut, she turned her attention to quartering the cabbage in a way that left the core intact but didn't mangle it completely with her knife. It wasn't pretty, but at least she'd managed to complete the task in a reasonable facsimile of the professor's instruction. She filled her cauldron with water and layered in the meat and cabbage. Cabbage on top, and then the lid went over it all.

One done, and now she could pay attention to the bread problem.

Making bread was much more along the lines of the type of cooking that Dot had tried before... and it was the kind of cooking that she'd failed miserably at before. It wasn't even a hard recipe, with less ingredients than she had fingers on one hand and it all just went into the pot, but the measurements were precise, the cooking time and heat were vital, and there was room for error. But if she thought about it like a Potion, it seemed less overwhelming. Dot measured out her ingredients, mixed, and set the cast iron pot into the hole she'd dug.

She was cooking in a hole. That was really weird.

Fiyero's blond head jerked up at the sound of Professor Stewart's voice. He took off his left glove, revealing the cut across the palm of his hand. "Just a little cut, Professor" he replied. It had finally stopped bleeding, at least for the time being. It was probably going to be fine. "Nothing to worry about." Please don't send me to Healer Murdoch! he thought silently.

After setting the timer for one hour, it was time to move on to the damper. He still thought that was an odd name for a food. Why did they call it that? Oh, well... no time to think about it now, he dismissed the thought as he went to get one of the cast iron pots. Now what? He consulted his recipe card. So this thing cooks in a hole full of a bunch of ashes and embers? Yep, this recipe just kept getting weirder and weirder...

Fiyero decided it would be a good idea to wait until after he had the dough mixed to shovel the coals into the hole, just in case they went out before he was finished the prep work. Pulling his glove back on, he picked up the measuring cup. Did he have to clean it again before using it? He assumed now, since all he'd put in it the last time was water... He measured a cup of flour into his pot before adding a pinch of salt. He hoped it wasn't too much... salty bread would taste nasty!

He cleaned his cup - the muggle way this time, as Professor Stewart had reminded them - before adding the water to the mix. Seriously, why did he have such a hard time remembering not to use magic in her classes?! He peeled off his right glove and set to work mixing the dough. Trying to do everything one-handed was hard, but he didn't want to chance contaminating the food with the cut (or the glove) on his other hand. Once he'd managed to form a nice round loaf, he dropped the dough back in the pot, placing the lid on top.

Now it was time to dig the hole. After putting his other glove back on, Fiyero grabbed the nearest shovel. Gripping the handle irritated his injured hand, but he wasn't going to complain about it. He quickly transferred a couple of shovelfuls of embers into the hole before putting the cast iron pot on top. He glanced at the timer for the stew... forty minutes left. It looked like both dishes were going to be ready at about the same time, and not a moment too soon! His belly was already growling...

He hurriedly cleaned up the utensils he'd used, taking extra care around the knife this time. The muggle way of cleaning was taking forever! He didn't understand why he couldn't just do another scouring charm; it would make things go a lot faster! After putting the equipment away, he rummaged through the crate to find a bag of marshmallows. He popped one onto the end of a stick he'd found at his feet and held it over the fire. Finally, snack time!

Soooooo it wasn't until Esme had finished preparing the first meal that she remembered to use the muggle way of cleaning things. Haha oops? Looked like she had been so caught up in what she was trying to do that she had forgotten. In fact if it wasn't for glancing at some of her fellow classmates she wouldn't have known to do it in the first place.

DUH, Esme. This isn't JUST Potions class.

Sorry, Professor Stewart.

Ehh. Shrugging it off, she set to work preparing the bread that they were going to eat. She couldn't remember what it was called, but it was Australian. She knew that much. Thank Merlin it was simple because she didn't know how much longer she could go without eating and her mind was starting to wander to food. The stew smelled sooooooooo good even though it had only started cooking. Why couldn't it be ready??? Pouting, she got herself one of those cast iron pot thingies because it was needed. Apparently once the bread was prepared it was going to be placed in the hole that she had dug. A little odd but who was she to judge? So long as the method worked and the food turned out delicious she was game to do whatever she was asked to. In this case it was to add all the ingredients and then mix them together with her hands. Right. That didn't sound difficult.

First went in the cup of self-raising flour, followed by a pinch of salt and 1/4 cup water. The simplest recipe for bread in the world - or at least she thought as much. Not like Esme had ever made bread before. Whatever. Her hands got right in the mixture and she set about working it into an even and doughy consistency. Nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty when not dealing with raw meat. It was actually kind of nice and soon she had a nice round loaf. The lid was placed on top of the pot and it was time to go into the hole though of course the coal and hot ash had to be added first.

Two shovelfuls of the coal and ash from her fire went into the hole she had dug previously, and the pot was set down. In 40 minutes the bread would be ready. In the meantime she set about cleaning her hands the muggle way (did you see that, Professor Stewart??) and got herself a stick and marshmallow. Yep, she was going to be eating roasted marshmallows until her food was ready.

SPOILER!!: Recipe Card
Damper
Ingredients (Serves 4-6)
1 cup self-raising flour
pinch of salt
1/4 cup water

Method
Add salt to flour.
Add 1/4 cup water.
Mix and form into a round loaf.
Dig a foot-deep hole near a fire and add 2 shovels of hot coals and ash.
Add damper mixture to a camp oven (traditional cast iron round pot with lid).
Cook for 40 minutes.
