| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger There were a few things that went through Nicky's mind when the pairings went up. The first was that she was being (unjustly) punished. Making her face a YATI! The second was realizing that Maggie had not been assigned one and was instead dueling another student, which had made her smirk, and led to thought three which was that this was an expression of confidence from Hirsch. Thought four was that Nicky would finally get to try out some spells that might have been.... risky with a peer. But this chick was trained to take care of herself, right?
So Nicky stepped into the duel calmly, confident in her own skill but not cocky. She knew nothing of this woman's approach. Nicky has first move, and so she was had considered it far more than any prior duel. She didn't anticipate having much time to think. The blonde has finally settled on seemingly random and unorthodox combinations, that hopefully the woman wouldn't anticipate.
Bows made and places taken, Nicky silently held her wand aloft. Verbal sparring was not on the menu for today. She opened with a nonverbal colloshoo aimed squarely at the woman's feet and followed by a burst of green sparks at eyelevel to hopefully distract or disorient. Finally, she muttered a quick bat-bogey hex before getting her feet moving. She would not be a static target.

| ½ of Lauralie | Koala | The being in Ern's pocket | Baby Smurf | Prouf member of The Flock Amrita hadn't fought a teenager since she was one herself. Though, granted, that was three months ago, but neither of them were in school. And both were training to take down people trained to take them down. And she wasn't very sure of the type of students Hogwarts spat out, despite being surrounded by the lot of them, all the time now. The castle was big, much much larger than Durmstrang's, but the people in it were so diverse. It was strange - disorienting. And absolutely exhilarating. Bow taken, counting to five before she opened fire, she saw her opponent slide into offense almost immediately. Perfect. The wand was aimed straight at her feet, and Amrita knew full well that what spell was coming. A protego was almost instinct, and the stickfast jinx and green sparks fizzled without rebounding. "Not these shoes! Nice wand, by the way." She didn't get paid much, and shoes were expensive.
And, well, distracted she was. And didn't duck out of the way of the bat boogey hex, which was massively uncomfortable, really. "Oppugno bats," she muttered at the creatures attacking her and flicking her wand to direct them at the girl on the opposite end of the arena. And while they were flying at her, she'd just disllusion herself.
Amrita Sanhu? More like Amrita Sand-where?
Speaking of sand. the YATI aimed at her opponent's feet and cast a non-verbal Orbis at the floor. |

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger Perhaps it would be to Nicky's advantage that she was a transfer student. She had no idea what her opponent had been told of Hogwarts' student preparation, but whatever it was, it didn't apply to the Castelobruxo transfer.
Truthfully, she hadn't expected the stickfast to, well, stick, but she allowed herself a small amount of pleasure seeing the bats swarm. "Those shoes are tacky. I'd be doing you a favor," she called back. She let the comment about the wand pass, though she did take note of the similarity in their wood. But all those thoughts were short-lived as the bats reversed course and headed her way.
That was a nice move, she'd give her that. She threw a quick shield up, watching the bats pop against them as she continued to move in the area. And it was a good thing, too, as the orbis hit right behind her and she narrowly avoided it. In the split second she'd taken her eyes off her opponent, the woman had disappeared. A muttered obscenity passed Nicky's lips as her eyes scanned for any hint of movement... a footprint, anything.
She weighed her options. She could shield, anticipating an attack, and wait for Amrita to reveal herself. She could try to cancel the disillusionment and attack herself. As she considered, she continued to move around the arena, keeping her back to the edges best she could, lest the woman sneak up behind her. "Aparacieum," she muttered, finally deciding that she needed to see the woman.
Once she figured out where she was.... she could do something else.

Amrita was insulted. Extremely so. Tacky? Her shoes? Excuse you, child. "If you insist, dear." However, she wasn't particularly invested in insulting her opponent. Unlike some of us in the ring, she had class. Insulting your opponent was anything but classy, and really, just a diversion tactic that one used in the hopes that their opponent would be sufficiently distracted trying to find a comeback that it would buy you time to find a hex to use.
Shame.
Amrita had cleared herself halfway across the room, steering clear of the sand by the time Nicky had decided that it would be fit to cast a revealing charm. Unfortunately, that would leave her in clear view, so the YATI had to resort to other measures. Like, perhaps, a teleportation spell to a spot facing away from her, followed quickly by a scorching spell in a ring around the girl, flames dancing just high enough to obscure her from view. "Fumos," she said, under her breath - once, twice, three times, forming a few clouds of smoke across the duelling arena, not ceasing her movement. Now, which one was she in? Good question.
Really, it was so sad that she couldn't play around with more fun spells, but there were reasons for rules, and she supposed the professors here were not fond of liability issues - rightfully so. So she'd just stick to the rules. Didn't need to lose her job. Amrita was quite fond of it, despite the lack of place to put her stuff. |

The word grated against Nicky's ears and her nose wrinkled. Condescending. The lot of them. She refocused on the matter at hand, however, refusing to let her earlier conversation distract her in this moment.
In split second after her charm was cast, Nicky realized that the woman should be visible but was not.. that could only mean... the young blonde turned rapidly, catching just the slightest glimpse of her opponent before the flames rose and the smoke obscured her again. Nicky's raised her free arm instinctively, shielding her face from the heat as she cast a bubblehead charm. At least the smoke wouldn't be a breathing issue now. Think, Nicky, think. The conversation from earlier was ringing in her ears now, keeping her from rapidly firing off charms to try to locate her opponent within the smoke. No. This woman was playing hide-and-seek and Nicky randomly firing off spells wouldn't solve that.
From her spot within the ring of fire, Nicky verbally cast ventus duo, causing the flames in front of her to dance but also the blow all the smoke to one end of the room. This was partially to expose her target but it was mostly to cause a distraction. Non-verbally, Nicky cast a homing charm on the YATI, so that her next spell would hit true even as her target moved. She pointed her wand off in a slightly different direction, however, hoping to cause a bit of misdirection as she muttered the incantation for petrificus totalus. The homing charm would redirect it to the target, and, Nicky hoped, the bubblehead charm, her low voice, and the roar of the flames would have muffled it enough to conceal her actual move.
Then, and only then, did the blonde extinguish the fire, skin red from the heat and brow dotted with perspiration.

| urine trouble | Pat's Strong Confident Other Half | Pees Like a Champion Unicorn Racehorse See, Hirsch had a reason for choosing the students he chose for these special duels. They'd shown quite a bit of magical ability even if, especially in the case of Miss Iver, they were more........ dangerous than expected. So, this was going to be a challenge to her as it was to anyone else. And he kind of wanted to see just how much she could stretch that magical ability of hers when faced with new competition.
Just saying.
He was very much glad that Miss Sandhu was giving Miss Iver the challenge that she needed and he was even more glad that the girl wasn't backing down. Though, what was it with the aurors and their use of fire and smoke? Was this something that had been discussed between them? If so, it was interesting but hey, surely that was something Miss Iver had no problem with?
Hirsch let the girl use it to her advantage before moving forwards to stop the duel. The shield was up, just in time for the Ravenclaw to rid the flames herself. "Excellent! Very well done!" he said, coming to a stop somewhere between the two duellers, "Thank you for your time, Miss Sandhu. I look forward to hearing your verdict."
As for Miss Iver, he turned to her and smiled before saying, "Excellent display of magic, I have to say. I hope the duel gave you a nice little challenge."
