Also remember to be as realistic as possible with your charrie's age and ability.
First person mentioned in the thread title is the first person to start off the duel.
Chloe looked very put together, even pretty in her opinion, today. Because today was duelling club and that meant that Hirsch was going to be watching. And she wanted to look the nicest she could manage. For him.
He was so handsome.
She also wanted to pull out all of the stops because Merlin knew that as soon as the actual duel started she would clam up so fast. In her experience duels were embarrassing and made her look incompetent. The least she could do was tip the scales in her favour so Hirsch didn't think less of her. She really didn't want that.
Also anxeity about confrontation was a thing.
The blonde prepared for the match and saw it was Bentley. She gave him a nod......
......and then blanked. Because a Hirsch walked by. She needed to do spells but she suddenly couldn't remember one. Focus, Newman.

Wow his first ever dueling club. Bentley wasn't sure why he hadn't started back when Blaise and his friends started but he was here now to see what the big hoopla was about. He had to admit that this was all pretty cool.
He wasn't banking on going up against Chloe though, especially on a day when she looked particularly.....like someone he'd give his chocolate cards collection to...and maybe even his favourite camera lens.
He turned her nod and just sort of stared at her...
"Umm...do you want to start first?"

Hirsch was so stupidly handsome. Beautiful, even. The kind of beauty only a man could possess. It made the third year want to run away. Like staring after him was going to make her look so silly that she would have no option but to run for the hills. Chloe was very adept at running away.
A special skill on her resume.
A voice broke through and she blinked in Bentley's direction. Oh right. She was here for a reason that did not include staring after her professor. That was just a wonderful, glorious perk.
She needed to cast and cast quickly but now that she was honed in on the duel she was blanking for completely different reasons. She did not like looking stupid or confrontation. And by delaying she was flaming one fear and by engaging she would have to deal with another.
Panic. She was panicking and so she drew her wand and said the first spell that came to mind, "Mobilicorpus."

Even if he said he was ready, Bentley wasn't sure he was really ready for this; not with Chloe.
He'd heard...things...about her and dueling and kinda thought he was at an unfair advantage which explains why he let her go first. What he didn't expect was for her spell to actually work. "Whoa." Chloe had him levitating in the air before he had a chance to bow or do anything else his cousin had told him about dueling club.
Awkward bowing was attempted but with him levitating like this he soon gave up. "Real nice, Chloe." Lucky he could get good aim from here. "Aguamenti!"

Chloe was not good at duelling-- she was decent at panicking and responding according-- but it seemed neither was Bentley. He complimented her. Which just did not feel like proper duelling etiquette. She wouldn't say no to some good PR, though, especially since Hirsch was near. Was he listening? Merlin, she hoped he caught that.
Her semi-pleased demeanour did not last.
He shot water.
At her face.
The face she had put her makeup on. The makeup she had SPECIFICALLY DONE to impress Hirsch. And now it was a soaking, dripping mess. Her eyeliner was streaking down her face and she was not pleased. In fact, she was really upset and embarrassed. Her face was a horrible shade of red.
She lifted her wand again and cast the first spell that came to her mind, "Petrificus Totalus!"

Since he was up here chilling..err..dueling he's just swimfly out of the way of spells. It wasn't very fun dueling with Chloe and he knew intent when casting a spell or charm was everything and since he had no intention to hurt or maim her, this wasn't going to work out with him so he'd do the next best thing--dodge. She could get her practice in while firing shot at him and he'd have some fun dodging them.
It was a win win in his book.
When Chloe shot the petrifying spell at him he floated a bit to the left to dodge it. Whoop!
"Nice shot."

Why was he not dueling her? She knew she was terrible at dueling but this was super embarrassing. At least when she lost usually it was because she was a bad dueler. There was something more embarrassing about someone avoiding every shot, taunting her.
And Bentley was doing JUST that.
She crossed her arms over her chest for half a second and levelled him with a look before she grew self conscious. She didn't want Hirsch to see her pouting.
Instead, she refocused her energy and shot spiteful water in his face, "Aguamenti!"

Hirsch didn't mean to be distracting, it just sort of happened. And even so, he didn't realise the effects he was having simply by walking past the two duellers and towards his usual spot. He did, however, realise that he was being looked at and looked up in time to catch Miss Newman's eye just before she looked away. Did this mean that the duel was starting? Good!
.............. What in the name of?!
There was being nice and then there was............ this. Hirsch blinked at the two players, wondering what was going on. Miss Newman was busy casting spells but Mr Bellaire wasn't fighting back? Did he realise that this was a duelling club? Or was he waiting for the right moment? The man hoped for the latter.
But there was no time to tell because the time for the duel came to a close all too soon. The magical barrier went up, saving Mr Bellaire from being hit by the Water Spell. Shame. He'd wanted to see the Gryffindor's duelling style. "That was........ an interesting duel. Very interesting," Very unique, too. "There can only be one winner, however, and you've claimed that title, Miss Newman. Congratulations! And well done on getting through your first duel well, Mr Bellaire." Dimpled!smiles to both of them.
