Default History of Magic Lesson One

As you walk into the History of Magic classroom, you will see that the room is set up as Professor Finch normally has it. There are small tables each with four chairs set up throughout the room with the student name tags that have been there sine the beginning of the year. Though he does like the alternative layout that the table and chairs provide, he also appreciates the order of the arranged seating.

Professor Finch is found leaning casually against his desk at the front of the room, waiting to welcome students back to class after the holiday break. Find your seat, class will begin soon!

OOC- Even though this is our first RPed History of Magic class of the term, this should not be your character's first History of Magic class this term! Your character should have been in class since the beginning of the school term in September =)

Okay. Alright. No debating with the class or each other, which made this activity, like, ten times easier. Finch's answer also calmed his nerves a ton, thankfully. If all they had to do, together, was think of three great reasons Hogwarts should require all students to take music classes, they'd be done long before class was supposed to be over! No big deal.

"Alright, bro!friend, so let's just think up three points for our argument." Oliver pulled out a new sheet of paper parchment? and titled it with their argument thing and a brief description. Brian was tired and so Ollie just figured he'd write what he thought and Brian could add in and proof read...and make it sound smart (because Oliver was not).

And this was the difficult part. Oliver knew music was really great for students and whatnot...but...putting the reasons why into words was hard, especially under a time limit. He tapped his pen against the desk and scrunched up his face in thought. Why were words so hard?????

"Uh....you think...saying that requiring students to take music class will broaden their horizons aaaand...open them up to...new experiences....both magic and non-magic related sounds okay?" Maybe the wording was weird...or off...but this was why partnering with Brian would be so great. Even when he was tired, Brian was still one of the smartest people Oliver knew.

The moment Professor Finch said they would be proposing a law for today's assignment, Fiyero knew exactly what he was going to do.He was going to tackle the dumbest rule on the books at Hogwarts: the no broomsticks for first years rule. but settling on a topic was the easy part. He soon found that coming up with three points to support his position was a lot harder than he thought.

Why should first-years be allowed to bring their own brooms to school? Well, for one thing, it was unfair that older students who couldn't fly a broom to save their lives were allowed to have one while younger students with a talent for flying weren't. Permission to have a broom should depend on ability, not age. And allowing all students to bring brooms might encourage more students to learn to fly (and maybe take an interest in Quidditch too!).

But he still needed a third thing. He absentmindedly tapped his quill on the desk, trying to think of a final point, but he was drawing a blank. If nothing else, Quality Quidditch Supplies would probably support the rule change. More students allowed to buy brooms would mean more sales. Wait, that was it!

Fiyero whipped out a piece of parchment and started writing as fast as he could:

Text Cut: Fiyero's Proposal

Name: Fiyero Jones
House: Gryffindor
Year: First

Let First Years Fly!

Flying is a practical skill that all young witches/wizards should learn, in case they ever find.themselves in a situation where other methods of transportation (floo powder, portkey, apparating, etc.) are unavailable or unreliable. The.rule barring first year students at Hogwarts from bringing their own.brooms to school makes it more difficult to learn this skill and should be reevaluated for the following reasons:

1. Unfair discrimination based on a student's age. Under the current rule, older students with no inclination toward flying are allowed to bring their own broom to school while first years with a talent or interest for the subject are denied. Permission to bring a broom.should be assigned on a case by case basis that takes things like interest, skill, and character, rather than just age.

2. Promoting interest/practice of flying.Allowing first years to have their own brooms would eliminate the need to borrow brooms.from the school to practice. Easier access to brooms would encourage more.students to take an interest in flying.

3. Stimulating sales of brooms. Shops like Quality Quidditch Supplies would financially benefit from the rule change. More people allowed to have brooms.means more broom sales.

Fiyero read over what he had written; he was beginning to feel less confident. His reasoning sounded a lot better in his mind than.it did on paper, but it was too late to change topics now. He didn't even want to know what his classmates would think of his argument! Could he just hand it in without having to share with the class?

Suddenly, Janelle thought of something that she hadn't thought of before. She had to add it to her notes. But now she definitely had too many points in her writing, so she would have to condense and elaborate. That was kind of contradictory, but she needed fewer point and more explanation. Janelle picked up her quill and began to rework her argument.

SPOILER!!: Janelle's notes
Proposal: Students should be required to take at least one class focusing on the arts.

If you think that studying the arts is not for you, think about what the arts include: music, singing, playing an instrument, dancing, drawing, painting, photography, acting, sculpting.......I could go on an on. That's just the tip of the iceberg. If you think about it, I bet that you could find at least one area of "the arts" that interests you. Besides the fact that studying the arts could be fun, there are a lot of benefits that you could receive, just from taking one little class.

-Studying the arts will help facilitate your creativity and self expression.
No matter what form of the arts you study, you will have the opportunity to
create something that is original and unique to you. Whatever you envision in
your mind, can be turned into a song or a dance or a painting. You can express
yourself through the arts. They can be an outlet for whatever you are feeling,
whether it is happiness, sadness, anger or anything else. The arts are often
used for therapy to help people deal with their feelings in a constructive way.
The way I see it, it is a win win.

-Studying the arts can help a person develop discipline. Anyone who doesn't
believe this should meet my sister Jasmine. She is a dancer and she is the
most disciplined person I know because of it. Being an "artist", no matter what
kind requires dedication, practice, time management and a bunch of other skills
that will transfer over to real life and help make you a better person.

-Studying the arts can help a person become more well rounded.
It is very important to study your basic school subjects. This is information
that you need to function in the real world, well most of it is. But, studying the
arts can make a person more than book smart. I believe that a person should
be well rounded and branching out into the arts can help you achieve this.
Besides, studying the arts can make your overall brain smarter. Ok, I'm
paraphrasing, but I did read something like that. Look it up.

I think that you should support my proposal to have students study some form of the arts. Try something new, challenge your mind in a new way and become a better person because of it. Take time to discover the arts, you won't regret it.

Janelle read over her work. It was better, but she wasn't entirely satisfied. It would have to do, for now........unless she came up with another bright idea. Putting her quill down, she sat back to reflect on her writing. Finally, she decided to go with what she had.

The presentations had begun and when the next speaker finished talking, Janelle raised her hand to volunteer. Better to get this over with......sooner than later. When she was called on, she grabbed her parchment and stood up. Trying not to read her notes word for word, Janelle presented her information to the class. She added in a few extra things off the top of her head, for good measure. She really believed that the arts would be great for all and hoped that came through in her presentation. When she was finished, she sat back down and listened to the rest of the class present.

When the last student had made their presentation and class was dismissed, Janelle went up and deposited her parchment on the professor's desk. It had been an interesting class. It made Janelle think and that was always a good thing. "Thanks Professor. See you next time."

Alright now Echo needed to write a new law, what should it be about?? ohhh a great idea popped into her head. Taking her quill and parchment she wrote her notes.

3. why not learn how to use their technology? keep up with the times in the wizarding community as well as the muggle
Echo thought that this was a good law, shes always wanted to know how things worked, and it would be a good place to learn it because they need to learn to blend in.

Moving her way up to the front of the class she Gave her argument, She knew that not everyone would agree with her but some students would.

Right... make three points, present your law to the class. No debating, which was good, because... that could make people upset or angry, and that would suck. Jaemin nodded lightly to himself and went about scribbling down some more stuff, chewing on his bottom lip.

Text Cut: notes
Language Education Law - Jaemin Song, 2nd Year Slytherin
Make a course in Latin mandatory for at least the first three years of Magical Education. Offer a course or courses that focus on how spells might be different from country to country and language to language.

-- Spells are based for the most part in Latin (I think) which means taking courses in it would help kids learn not only the spells themselves but why spells are the way they are

-- There might be other ways or spells to do things that are better than the traditional ways that we learn here. Lots of Muggle stuff is different from country to country, so why wouldn't magic be, too?

-- Learning different languages makes people more open to other people and cultures, and it helps people to not mispronounce other peoples' names and then get mad at them when they're corrected.

There. That would do. Jaemin waited his turn before heading up to the front of the class to present his law, standing up to his full 4'5" and doing his best to look authoritative. His best wasn't enough, because he still was a very small boy, but he plowed right into the presentation anyway.

"I believe that every student should be required to take language courses, and have the option to take further language courses, either by owl or in the school. Our spells are based on a bunch of old languages, and learning some parts of them at the very least could give us a better understanding of magic and why some spells are the way they are." He nodded, looking down at his parchment for a moment before looking back up at the other students. "I don't think everyone has to be bilingual, but I am, and knowing English as well as Korean cause that's what I am makes it easier to understand and say some of the spells we learn. Knowing Latin on top of that would be even more helpful because English is based on Latin, but isn't fully Latin, so some things are really really different and I think that's why some of the spells we learn can be confusing to say. I think we should also have optional courses on magic in other countries, because spells might be different depending on where you are in the world and it'd be really cool to see how different they could get. I just think that languages should be mandatory, just like stuff like History class, because it helps you learn about who you are and who other people are and makes it easier to get along with people."

Had he rambled enough? He looked at Finch and gave the man a light, nervous smile, reaching to scratch at his ear before setting the parchment on the man's desk and heading back to his seat.

Ansley would have liked to have a proper debate with the class had they had more time, but perhaps they could use the arguments they began today for their next class and do that very thing. But they were unnervingly quiet today and seemed to just have barely enough time to write out their points, let alone present them. That's the way it went sometimes, he supposed.

He listened to a few of the groups present their proposed "laws" and corresponding arguments, allowing the class to applaud if they wanted and nodding approvingly to each one. He didn't say whether or not he agree with any of them, he more wanted them to think for themselves about the process and to come up with valid reasons. And so far most of them did great.

Jaemin would be the last student to present, considering their time, and he listened thoughtfully to his ideas. Once he was finished, Ansley gave him a reassuring smile as he set the parchment on his desk and he turned to address the rest of the class.

"Good work, everyone. But unfortunately our time is up for today. If you haven't already, please place your parchment on my desk and you can gather your things and leave for your next class." And since not all of them were as forthcoming with presenting today, he decided to give bonus points for those that volunteered their thoughts. He appreciated their willingness to share. He nodded his goodbyes, then once the last of the students were gone, he locked up and headed to his office to get those papers graded.
