The front of the train is the perfect seat for those eager to see, be seen, and get to school FIRST. Avoid the Prefects' Compartment, unless you're looking for trouble, but there is plenty of seating available in these compartments.

Though that would be awkward, well not for Felix she didn't take up a lot of room, but the girl might have a thing about personal bubbles. "I've just been trying to calculate how long it will take me to get to the center of this." She waved her jawbreaker at the girl. "My daddy says there is a surprise in the center but you have to get to it within a year and you can't cheat like keeping it in water. Who would put a jawbreaker in water that takes all the fun out of licking. Not a lot of people invest in proper licking technique. My baby cousin Cuba is a great licker. She once licked a baby snow leopard." Felix held out her jawbreaker. "How long do you think it would take to get to the center? I figure you have to divide the radius of the jawbreaker by the drag coefficient of the lick then square the day of the week."
Ariadne could tell she kind of took the girl by surprise when she opened the compartment door. Duh. Who wouldn't have been shocked to have a door suddenly fly open when they were least expecting it? It didn't seem to bother her too much and for too long, though. "Alright, cool," she said, plopping down into a seat and getting comfortable. She looked down at her feet and watched them swing back and forth for a bit. They actually touched the floor this time. Last school year, her feet just dangled above the ground.
"You're trying to calculate something about your candy?" she asked. "Sounds complicated." She started to ask if the girl was a Ravenclaw, but it also looked like she might be a first year. "So are you a first year?" She hadn't seen her around, and by this point, she'd seen about all the regulars. Her eyebrows perked up when she found out there was a surprise in the center. "Oh, well no wonder you want to know how long it'll take to get there!" She had no idea how long it would take to get there. "I don't know. How big was it when you started?" And... "A baby snow leopard? Why?"
...
"Divide the what of the jawbreaker and drag the what? That sounds like a really difficult piece of candy to eat," she said. "My mind hasn't figured out the school year's started yet, and I'm still in denial." She pulled out the first of her chocolate frogs. "I'm just concerned with the chocolate frog card that's inside and whether or not I already have it."

Raising an eyebrow at Charlotte's next comment, Dalton let out a small chuckle. "Oh, is that so?" He couldn't help but wonder if Char would prove herself to be unforgettable, and something told him she would. Was that a good thing? He couldn't yet decide.
Gosh, she was enthusiastic about her house, wasn't she? It wasn't surprising, but her next comment threw him off guard. Bastien was her cousin. Oh. Right. Well, it would be rude to think badly of him because he didn't technically know him, so Dalton wouldn't. "I know of him. I mean, I'm... friends with his girlfriend." Kelly and him were friends, right? Right. He thought so, at least. That was all he said, though, because he wasn't planning on dismantling and working out his feelings for Kelly with this person he'd known for all of five minutes. Because there weren't feelings there. Nope.
"Do you know Tim Kyle?"
"I did say so far!" Charlotte pointed out. As in he could prove himself to be a dolt maybe! If he wanted to! But so far he seemed smart enough that he could be good on the list. Maybe. There were other factors to consider.
He seemed surprised about her assertion that people didn't forget her and Charlotte just tossed her head confidently, setting her hair bouncing. "It IS so." He would see.
"Oh you are?! I haven't met her yet! But she's pretty, I saw pictures." And she teased Bast about it of course. In the loving sort of cousinly way. "Bast is cool! I bet you'd like him! And this year he's combat captain at Durmstrang! Well, deputy, but BASICALLY it means he's the toughest!" Which was cool because their other cousin had been combat captain before that. Char was proud of her family for sure. "I want to meet her though! You should introduce me!"
Tim Kyle?
"Oh yeah I know who she is! She's pretty too! Is she your girlfriend, Dalton?" Char hadn't yet decided if boys with girlfriends were okay to go on the list or not, but she would think about that more later.

She extended the greeting to the boy.
Charlotte looked up when the compartment door opened and smiled brightly.
"Hi Genny! Did you have a good summer? This is Dalton, he's a Slytherin, we're friends now." She announced, both for Genny's benefit and in case Dalton hadn't realised. He didn't get a choice in the matter, but then nobody ever did.

Mel looked down at her clothes and shrugged her shoulders. “I would have asked about the cat stockings if it were me…but eh flannel is comfy?” She shrugged her shoulder. “And it was clean…I mean I only just got back to England” she explained with a sigh.
It wasn’t long until she heard the nickname Tenacius used for her and turned to look at him before laughing. “Girly times?” Mel asked as she heard his question and smirked…girly times what even were those? Mel raised her eyebrow a little as she saw Hadley moving over for Tenacius. She was about to comment when she heard Kitty’s voice.
“HEY! Of course come join us!” She beamed at the Ravencalw girl. “Her bangs do look awesome don’t they!” Bangs were better than… she stopped mid thought to look down for a bit then looked back at her friends. “Kitty! We need to do more things together this year…maybe have a dueling club of our own? Practice spells and be epicly awesome?” Mel grinned at her other Ravenclaw friend. “And I obviously say you can join us!” She grinned and shifted so there was space on either side of her. There. Anyone could join them now.
“My summer was…well, awesome? I went to music camp for a bit but ended up getting lost and confounded by this barrier thing” she frowned a bit. “Apparently I took a wrong turn and almost ended up on the boy’s side” she laughed.

I'm Evie it's my first time too." She moved closer to the window so that Demean could choose which ever seat he wanted. "Are you excited to be going to Hogwarts?" She hoped that she could extort information out of a few of the other kids before they got to school.
She folded her hands in her lap and sighed inwardly, wishing her father had been there to show her off on the train. She would have given anything to have seen his face once more before she left London. But Christmas wasn't so far away. She couldn't wait to see him again.
"Yeah, but the stockings are just more...you," she said with a shrug. "Well, to me at least." Sure flannel shirts were comfy, they just didn't strike Hadley as Melbourne Johanson. But, then, honestly, what did Haddie know. Ninety percent of the time they'd been together has been spent wearing black robes. "It's nice. I like it."
Hadley smiled warmly as Kitty entered. Aaaaand there was the question. Her smile fell. She knew she'd have to talk about her summer, at least minimally at some point, but she was still hoping to put that off as long as possible. Because for as agonizingly miserable as it was, it sounded decisively less so. Hadley didn't say anything in reply to the question, at all. In fact, she was perfectly content to play it off as if she hadn't heard it, and watched the landscape go by outside the window.
Still there was the matter of the compliments she was getting on her bangs. Hadley looked back at her friends, with a grin. "Thanks, I like how they came out." Then she focused a bit more on Kitty. "I think I found my style." Took her exactly a year to answer the one of the first things Kitty had asked her, but she finally did.

Selina boarded the train suddenly nervous about going to hogwarts, which wasn't like her at all, but there were just so many people on the train and milling about the station, so many people with families to see them off. For the first time probably ever, she felt absurdly out of place.
She wandered along the corridor of the front car trying to find an empty compartment so she could regain her usual composure.
Head up, eyes forward. relax, relax, relax, she thought to herself, her heart beating at an unusually fast pace.
Selina straightened her white dress, adjusted her wand holster on her dress belt, and ran a hand through her long silver hair so it rested down her back
.
Finally she'd come to the conclusion that none of the compartments were empty, and chose a compartment with only two occupants. A boy and a girl, around her age she thought.
Head up she addressed them, "Do you mind if I join you?"
There was a slight shake in her voice, but they wouldn't have noticed that would they? She looked stunning standing there all in white right? Like royalty perhaps? She hoped so.

"I'm just concerned with the chocolate frog card that's inside and whether or not I already have it."
With her feet stuck straight out in front of her she nodded. "Yeah I'm a first year. I want to be in Slytheirn. My daddy, my aunt, my great-aunt and my grandfather were in Slytherin. So its like a family thing. Though Ravenclaw wouldn't be so bad but I look better in yellow so Hufflepuff is ok. Well I like red and gold so Gryffindor wouldn't be so bad, but I think my dad would be disappointed if I weren't in Slytherin. He wants me to pull better pranks than he did." She licked her jawbreaker a few times.
She smiled. "Oh I just started. My daddy gave it to me last night. My grandmother would be really upset she says a little girl should not be 90% candy, but what she doesn't know won't get me in trouble." Felix nodded. Not that she would tell her grandmother that.
She looked at the girl. "Well because it was there and Cuba is a baby. Babies lick things." Did the girl really need to ask that. Didn't everyone know baby liked to lick everything?
Felix cocked her head at the girl. "No the candy isn't complicated to eat you just have to keep licking. I wonder if I can lick in my sleep. I just want to see if I can calculate how long it will take me to get to the center. How long can you be in denial if you know you are in denial. Is this like Schrodinger's cat. If you open the box school has started but if you don't open the box it hasn't so you just hold the box and wait for it to explode?" Felix inched away from the girl incase her mythical box did explode.
She licked her jawbreaker and wrote some complicated maths down in her notebook. "My aunt Paris is on a card. I've got three of hers. I've got more cards than my daddy. How many do you have? Do you go to the trading card tea parties. I went to the last one and it was a Mad Hatter theme I got to wear a green and purple stripped top hat and a orange waistcoat. My aunt said my outfit gave her vertigo but it so was so much fun. They had teacakes and jam sandwiches." She gave her jawbreaker another lick.
Felix offered the girl her hand without the sticky jawbreaker. "Felix Greenwood at your service. I'm a hoot at parties and I've got bubblegum that can change your hair color." She offered the girl a cheeky grin.

"The only thing I'm expecting is a shoddy year at Hogwarts." Blaise turned to the boy, horrified by the fact he'd chosen to sit. This meant he wasn't going anywhere...didn't it? Thinking this a good thing, his quill and notepad perked up, ready to scribble everything it heard and Blaise didn't have the motivation to tell it not to.
Just...whatever.
"Being alone to wallow is the optimal solution here, yeah. It'd make feeling sorry for myself that much easier and less restricted." Couldn't very well mope when Mr. Prefect was sitting right there. He had his pride and...and his reputation to maintain and even HE could tell he was in pretty pathetic shape right now.
"Aren't you expecting company? Don't you have friends to sit with for the ride?" Because...well....he wasn't gonna wrestle him out of the compartment....but he couldn't stay the WHOLE ride either. Nope nope nope.
Well, well, well. It seemed someone wasn't in a happy mood to be going back to Hogwarts and Hugo expected to be the opposite considering Blaise was a younger student. Although it surprised him that he hadn't told him to leave 'cause Hugo was pretty sure after his question the Gryffindor wasn't going to answer and just tell him to leave. He wondered why he was in such mood.
"It shouldn't be that bad. At least you aren't doing OWLs or NEWTs" and that was good. Hugo didn't wanted to know anything about those, he had enough with the OWLs and this year was going to be easier. Or at least he thought so.
He shrugged "They must be somewhere around. I can ask you the same"

Demean didn't had much sleep last night, but right after he walked in he saw another girl, already in the compartment with Evie. "Nice one D, open your eyes in the near future please" he thought. "Sorry, I didn't noticed you" he said completly embarassed.
"Does anyone want some Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans? I happen to have some but I'm afraid to try them alone!"Perhaps the idea of sharing candy with his newest friends would make the second girl forgive him for such early rudeness.

Eh....she was probably the only one who knew what so she took the item out of the box. "Who wants some Jelly Slugs?!" she beamed. Candy was THE way to make friends right?
Selina stared back at the girl who had so rudely just stared at her. What did she want, that was hardly any form of invitation to join the three first years in the compartment. Yet neither had she been told to leave. So Selina continued to stand in the doorway, neither inside or outside of the compartment, and sighed.
The staring girl then dropped her gaze to produce a box of candy out of her bag. Candy, Jelly slugs to be exact according to the girl. Selina wasn't entirely certain if the candy was being offered to her as well or just the other people in the compartment, so she did not answer. Instead she opted to just shake her head slightly. She wasn't a fan of the particular offered candy anyway.
Deciding that it was far too awkward to just stand in the doorway, Selina decided to take the candy offer as an invitation to join them in the compartment, and took a seat in one corner near the doorway, the furthest from the three.

Much like the Prefect, the younger boy also shrugged at the mention of his friends. He did miss them, but he hadn't thought to go looking for them when he'd boarded, far too busy sulking. "Reckon they must be somewhere on the train, excited about going back to school and stuff. I might find them later or I might wait til the feast." Another shrug was offered. No concrete plans outside of slowly expiring til June.
"What'd you like so much about Hogwarts?"

Harriet was really excited! Hogwarts! She was going to Hogwarts today! She'd loaded all of her luggage into the luggage big, and now she was going to enjoy the ride to school. She had told her brother she would be fine. It wasn't like the could get lost on the train. And he surely didn't want to spend so much time with her. She was the 'annoying' little sister after all.
So now she just needed to find somewhere to sit. Hattie hummed as she wandered down at the front of the train. She was just going to look into a compartment when someone bumped into her. "Oh... opps!" she murmured, stopping her walking. "Are you okay?"

Hattie tilted her head to the side at the boys words and then laughed. "That song is like super old" She mused with a laugh. And that guy really could not sing. But that was okay. Nobody could be good at everything. "I'm okay" She mused with a little laugh. "I have a big brother, and two sister's. I'm made of tough stuff" So she wasn't going to get hurt easily .

"some people like old songs." he stood up and noticed he was slightly taller than the girl. "like my mum and dad... they love that old stuff " then again, they were old so it seemed like it fit well. I have a little brother.. no wonder I never hurt him too badly." Levi's as made of tough stuff, it was decided.

"didn't say I didn't like it..." Hattie mused, sticking her tongue out a thim. She kind of liked that song too. Her mom didn't let her listen to Wrock music yet. So she listened to old muggle songs, and the new ones. She liked muggle music. "Hey! ouch! That hurt!" She murmured, swatting at his hand. "I'm not made of metal. I'm a girl. Not a robot." She murmured, clearly not happy at the pinching. "I only have one little sister. My other two siblings are older than me. But none of us are made out of metal"

Even though Hady was alone in the compartment, one could never be sure. Maybe she was having a conversation with herself? Kelly had heard that, that was healthy somewhere.
Sitting down on the across the fellow snake the fifth year sighed a little. Her trunks were really heavy and she was glad she didn't have to look after them anymore. "I haven't seen anyone else yet but i am sure they'll spot us when they come by." Now that would be fun, to have the band here in the compartment. The ride would certainly fly by if they all joined them. They could have a singalong or something.
Just as the blonde was gonna suggest that the compartment door opened up again and a blond dude stepped in....she had seen him before but the slytherin wasn't quite sure were to put him. Hmmmm....
OHHHHHHH!
It was Hady's boyfriend Frankie. Of course! How could she not see that immediately? Kelly Rose Flenegan , you fail. Hady was so lucky to have her boyfriend on the train with her. It kind of made her sad thinking about how Bastien was on the ship to Durmstrang right now and she was here. Hundreds of miles away from him. But they could do this, it would be fine. They had owls and he could visit. She'd sneak him in whenever.
Giving Frankie a smile, she observed the conversation that was going on between him and Hady. They were adorable.

What exactly do you think I'm doing in here...singing to myself or something?" She was teasing of course. As she had been known to sing to her cat before or drum her hands on her knees during many occasions.
"They better. How could they miss to gorgeous girls sitting in here?," Hady answered with her usual smirk. There was no denying that The Sirens were some beautiful girls. And getting all five of them together in one compartment would certainly make for one entertaining train ride.
The Lady snakes attention was pulled away by an odd sounding cough. Shifting her eyes towards the compartment door the smile on her face grew larger when they fell upon the blonde his arms pilled with sweets. "It would be very sweet of you, come sit?" she commented patting the spot nearest her or well as near as she could get with Hagan at her side. "You do remember what Professor Ichicara had said about sweets though...right?" Her cheeks might be slightly pink at the cute little name the boyfriend used but she pretended not to know. They weren't supposed to be eating them or at the very least counting back on sweets majorly. A very huge problem for the two of them.

The most important part was to find a reasonable excuse for weird behaviour. For friends only obviously. Who cared about strangers?!
"Two gorgeous girls? Now someone is in a good mood." The slytherin couldn't help but giggle at that. Obviously she knew her friends were some of the prettiest girls around but it was funny to hear someone say it out loud like that.
Kelly watched her fried and her boyfriend with a smile on her face. They were so cute together. It was about time that she had gotten to see them in action. It was like watching a a romcom, a really really cute one. The blonde got why Hady liked Frankie so much. He brought her sweets! Such a good boyfriend. Maybe she could steal some from her friend later...when she was busy kissing her boyfriend. Yes that was a good plan. Also a good plan because, kissing would make her feel sad and awkward because her own boyfriend wasn't here to kiss.

The brunette grinned at her fellow snake. "Of course. I have no reason not to be," She answered flashing Frankie a bright smile. They were headed back to Hogwarts, her summer had been amazing, she had her boyfriend at her side and a band mate across from her, yep she was happy.
Hady knew all about Kelly's boyfriend and the boy returning to Durmstrang. That had time be hard. She couldn't imagine not being at school with Frankie, the weeks apart during the summer were bad enough.
A couple chocolate frogs slipped out of his hold and onto the compartment floor by Kelly's feet. Whoops! The blond would have bent over to pick them up, but that was just an invitation for the other candies to meet the same fate. So he gave the girl a sincere look, and then he walked beyond the doorway and into the compartment so he could drop all of his goods onto the seat.
"Oh, come ooooon. What Professor Ichihara won't hurt her," Frankie said to Hady, giving her a wink. "A few sweets every now and then won't hurt anyone. Am I right?" He directed that question to the other girl in the compartment. "Besides, Hads, I got some of your favourites. It'd be such a waste if you didn't divulge a little."
Frankie gave her a pouty face. Did she not want at least one sweet? Just one? Did Kelly want anything?
"Whatever is left over I can share with the prefects when I head back to my compartment, or I can save a few for a rainy day," he added with a shrug, looking at both girls as he sat down. The Gryffindor then looked at the pile and grabbed one of the pumpkin pasties.
Dalton chuckled drily as Charlotte repeated herself. "I know, but I feel that people display their idiocy pretty early on, don't you?" To him, you could just tell when people were, in her words, 'dolts'. But he probably thought that about most people. He definitely thought that about most people. Not her, though, Dalton couldn't help but realise as he watched the quill wave in her hand and her hair bounce slightly. Her confidence made him chuckle drily again, as did the other realisation he had: he didn't actually mind her company, enthusiastic as she was.
And he minded most peoples company.
"He's moved to Durmstrang?" His eyebrow raised slightly at the notion, thoughts wandering back to Sharky's cousin's girlfriend. How did she feel about him moving? Dalton made a mental note to ask her about it when he next saw her, and lost in thought slightly, nearly missed Char's next comment. "Huh -? Oh, yeah, sure I can introduce you." How odd that her cousin hadn't himself. But then, maybe they hadn't been together for long. He wasn't sure.
Shaking his head slightly at her next comment, Dalton responded, "Tim? Nah, she's seeing someone called... Erm. Well, someone who's not me. Besides, I don't see her like that. She's a friend." Even if Aled insisted she was the prettiest girl to ever exist, and if she had been his own first kiss. Which he'd never actually told anyone, and didn't plan on doing so: it was no one else's business.
He offered a nod to the younger girl as Char introduced her. Friends? Was she even sure she wanted to be friends with him?

The brunette was already laughing. Chocolate frogs may have been on the compartment floor and the boyfriends arms were still holding way to much sweets. And Hady found this funny. It was so funny to her that she didn't even bother to pick them up. Sooner or later the candy would get eaten.
Training was important and she was taking it very seriously but some candy couldn't hurt. Not when it was- Wait. Had the blonde just said he had gotten her favorite? Hady grinned at him right away forgetting everything. "Alright, alright but don't let me go crazy," She gave him a pointed look. A crazed sugar high right now wouldn't be good. Now just stop pouting, he knew she couldn't say no when he did that.
Moving Hagan onto the floor Hady shifted on the bench leaning against the boyfriends side. "Kelly we might need some help eating some of this," She smiled at her friend. "You remember Frankie, right?" Of course she did. They all knew each other's boyfriends.
Reaching over the blonde she was currently leaning against she snagged herself a chocolate frog. Not jolly ranchers but still yummy.

Kelly couldn't help but aww inwardly as she watched her band mate interact with her boyfriend. They totally had to go up for cutest couple. Nat and Roman were going up as hottest couple. This had to happen. How cool would it be if two of her band members won? Like...obviously they would win. "I sing under she shower", the blonde giggled and shrugged," the shower can't escape. but i don't believe that you can't sing. I've heard you hum." Humming was almost singing wasn't it?!
Even though the slytherin was in kind of a bad mood because she already missed Bastien, Hady's mood was uplifting. There was something so positive about her right now and maybe that was just what Kelly needed. " That's true. Next term is gonna be eventful i can totally feel it." Well hopefully it would be so she would be distracted from her boyfriend being away and being busy with combat stuff. Man was Kelly proud of him to make deputy captain.
A soft laugh escaped her lips as the sweets landed in front of her feet. Adorable. " Don't worry about it Frankie. I'll take them and keep them as reward for picking them up." Sweets were always welcome. After all the fifth year had a sweets pyramid in her dorm....unless the houseelves had eaten it all over summer.....but houseelves weren't mean like that. " I can never say no to candy. No better way to start Hogwarts than with a belly ache cause too many sweets." There were definitely worse ways. A sweets binge was very welcome.
"Of course i remember Frankie", Kelly winked, " soo good to see you again Frankie. I am sure this ride is gonna be fun. Just tell me if you...want some privacy." She would understand that since she had wanted privacy too when she was on this train last...now wasn't the right time to think about it.
"I see you have a thing for sweets too Frankie?" Opening one of the chocolate frogs she had picked up the girl gave him a wink. Captain obvious was here.
You have bewitched me body and soul, And I love- I love- I love you

Glad that Evie had understood the reason why she had already put on the uniform, Rebecca nodded her head , agreeing with her that she looked more official now and she sat up more straighter. She never had to wear an uniform before so this was new to her. “Oh!” she suddenly laughed again as she saw Evie inspecting the sleeve. “I was changing and got startled when the compartment door opened up. I thought I had locked it , it was embarrassing “ she scratched the back of her head and turned her attention to the door when it opened again.
Bec looked up as well, pouting slightly when the new boy only addressed Evie but that was soon forgotten because the idea of more people entering the compartment meant more friends to make. And it would be easier for her as well because now she didn't need to walk around introducing herself everywhere. She listened to Evie agreeing to let him in and Rebecca started to search her bag when the door opened up yet again.
Woah....what was up with this girl's hair? Had she dyed it silver or was it her real hair? Rebecca stopped searching her bag and stared probably rudely at the same aged girl. Could she touch her hair? please?
Shaking her head to refrain herself because that would be a rude first meeting, Bec smiled at the new girl as well and tuned back to her private task. Where was it!? She opened up another pocket in the bag she was searching through and suddenly yelled out.
"I FOUND IT!"
Eh....she was probably the only one who knew what so she took the item out of the box. "Who wants some Jelly Slugs?!" she beamed. Candy was THE way to make friends right?

"Does anyone want some Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans? I happen to have some but I'm afraid to try them alone!"Perhaps the idea of sharing candy with his newest friends would make the second girl forgive him for such early rudeness.
That girl had a curious look on her face, and Demean replied: "I don't really know what to expect, I should be going to Durmstrang, but I have no relatives left in my home country, the only person I have his my cousin, and he is working at the ministry here.
Evie shrunk back in her seat as more people joined her compartment, she hadn't really ever been around a lot of people. Crowded and noisy. Those were the only two words that could best describe the current situation of the Hogwarts Express. Trying to politely push through people was one of Clara's least favorite things to do, and yet she really had no choice in here.
She noticed that the front seemed slightly emptier than the middle and the back, so she narrowed down her options. There were little groups here and there and her eyes had to try extra hard to find an empty compartment. It wasn't that she hated people, it's that she hated feeling left out. Having gone the first four years of Hogwarts without a -real- friend, it was starting to feel incredibly lonely. Sure, there were acquaintances here and there, and it wasn't like she didn't know anyone. In fact, she had a knack for remembering faces and names way better than anyone ever should. Unfortunately, having temporary friends can get a little saddening when you're looking for an open seat. It's like a bunch of oranges at the supermarket, and you're that one orange that keeps getting looked over, time and time again. Okay, maybe that's a little overdramatic, but this was all in Clara's head, so shouldn't that be okay?
Realizing that she was in the way and that there were a few students behind her trying to scope out their buddies that they've missed, Clara quickly scanned for an empty compartment - nope, no not that one - voila! An empty compartment was greeting her with a smile and she sat down as hastily as she could, relieved that she now had a seat. Now she could finally enjoy that pumpkin pasty she got on the food trolley earlier...

Platform 9 3/4 was already bustling by the time the Ryder/Jones family arrived. So this is the Hogwarts Express, Fiyero thought, gazing up at the train in front of him. He vaguely heard Stefan and Killian, two of his older cousins, arguing whether he'd be sorted into Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, but he wasn't paying much attention. He was too busy rummaging through his school bag for his new camera to snap a few shots of the train.
His cousins were still arguing as the train whistle sounded, and a horrible thought occured to Fiyero. "What if I'm not in Gryffindor?" he asked as he hugged his mother goodbye. Almost everybody in his mother's family went to Gryffindor; they'd probably be disappointed if he didn't.
To his relief, his mother smiled. "Don't worry about that, Fiy," she assured him. "We'll be proud of you, no matter which house you get." She ruffled his blond hair, giving him one last hug, and Fiyero waved back at her as he boarded the train.
After changing into his Hogwarts uniform (well, half of it anyway. He hadn't put on the black robe, and he wasn't going to button up his cardigan or tie his tie until he absolutely had to!) and a quick stop at the food trolley - because he could never have enough candy - Fiyero decided it was time to find a seat. His other cousins, Zira and Zarina, had offered to let him sit with them, but listening to them talk about girly stuff wasn't the way he wanted to spend the train ride.
He soon happened upon a compartment where four people who looked about his age were sitting. They seemed friendly - and they had candy, that was always nice. Maybe they'd let him sit with them... or maybe not. It looked kind of full. He slid the door open, and poked his head inside.... just in time to hear one of the girls (Evie) ask a question about the houses. "Hi, everybody! Room for one more?" he said. He turned to the girl who had just spoken. "I couldn't help overhearing... The houses are like dormitories. They're assigned based on personality. The brave kids go to Gryffindor, and the ambitious ones are Slytherins. The Ravenclaws are all super-smart, and the Hufflepuffs are honest and loyal."
He suddenly remembered he hadn't introduced himself yet!"I'm Fiyero Jones, by the way," he added quickly, "but everybody calls me Fiy."
