Apparently Hirsch had some kind of twisted sense of humor.
Not that Maggie minded per se. Honestly, there were few things she'd rather do than hit Maddie with few good spells. And without getting in trouble too! But there was still the issue of mutual friends and the way it would make her look if she actually enjoyed this too much. So she was going to be professional about this. Totally. This was just like any other duel.
And she was going to WIN THIS!
Giving the Ravenclaw a polite nod, Maggie waited for the other girl to get ready before bowing to her. Manners, she had them. Absolutely. Once all the dueling etiquette things were done, she straightened up rather quickly again, just in case Maddie was going to hex her right away. Which would be rude, considering. Ladies first and all, right? And Maddie definitely was NOT a lady.
Which was why Maggie was the one who got to cast first and while it was 'just' a Trip Jinx to start them off, she put some real effort into casting.

If Maddie had the ability to read minds, she'd actually agree with the lesser M on one thing. She was indeed not a lady. In fact, as far as titles went, the eighteen year old was a self-proclaimed queen from the age of eight and though she was speaking much less about her desire to reign these days, it was still there tucked right beside her desire to be loved. So yes, not a lady, not ever. Queen Maddie was just that and today, a formidable foe.
She'd observed Maggie's duels last term. It was clear that the younger girl was agile, but also quick to anger. While this could assist the blonde with some added oomph behind her spells, it could also work to Maddie's advantage as keeping a clear head was always helpful in situations like these, and the brunette's head was clear as crystal today.
After a polite nod of her head, brown eyes found blue ones and the Ravenclaw watched and waited, curious and alert. The slightest movement of the Slytherin's wand had her sidestepping the spell, her face rather unreadable as she reacted. She didn't want Maggie to know what she was thinking, so as not to give any clues about what she might do in retaliation.
Just as quickly as she'd moved, she was aiming for her opponent. "Cantis." Maybe Maggie's voice was nicer than her personality. Here's hoping.

...they would never know if her voice was nicer than her personality.
Because while Maggie had a tendency to let her emotions cloud her judgement, right now she wasn't agitated enough for that yet. Or at all really. She was being totally zen about this duel. Just a duel like any other. Even though winning would be even MORE satisfying with her current opponent. That was it though. She wasn't going to let her dislike for Maddie affect her dueling.
So she too sidestepped the first spell the Ravenclaw sent towards her. With eaaaaase. Like pls. That had been way too easy.
Maggie wasn't going for anything too strong or offensive just yet so for now she was mainly just trying to embarrass Maddie. Make her look dumb in front of Dima the audience watching them. Which was why she sent a Sardine Hex at the other girl next while she kept moving around the room. A moving target was in fact a lot harder to hit after all.
She'd been doing this for a few years now.

Starting off simple was all well and good but Maddie found herself feeling underwhelmed. They could cast and dodge the simpler spells all day long, she was sure, but it wouldn't make either of them better at the end of the day and she doubted Hirsch would be impressed by their current performance. With this in mind, she uttered a firm "Protego,"deflecting the sardine hex back at her opponent. Maggie might be a moving target but Maddie had excellent aim and her eyes never left the blonde.
Seconds later, Maddie's eyes still trained on the Slytherin, the cheering charm was said with conviction and sent her way, too. Now, she hoped, they could stop playing around and just get down to it.

Maggie HAD in fact expected the spell to come back at her - there was no denying that Maddie knew how handle a wand after all. Nonetheless, she'd apparently underestimated just how fast it would come back at her so in the end all she could do was jump out of the way. Which was done very gracefully however. Very gracefully indeed. Like, she even added a small twirl on the spot to make sure she was facing the Ravenclaw again.
Grace, it was an important aspect of dueling too. Yes.
It was NOT due to the twirling - not at ALL - but somehow Maggie wasn't fast enough to protect herself from the next spell heading her way. It simply came way too fast for her to react. Ugh. What kind-
Aw, wasn't Maddie just the prettiest? "I really like your hair!" Absolutely. It was really nice the way-
Okay. Focus, Traulton. This was NOT happening to her again. No way. She still hadn't entirely forgiven Zeke for that stunt he'd pulled last term. That had been a whole other level of cruel. So nope. Taking a deep breath she quickly cast "Finite!" on herself before narrowing her eyes at her opponent slightly. Okay, it was ON! Like so totally on. Maddie wouldn't know what hit her.

Maddie was going to contribute her momentary lapse to the fact that Mags had said something nice to her. The amusement was evident in that moment and the brunette took a second to think about how she could use that moment to her advantage in the future, but it had been a second too long. She wasn't ready for the Imediment Jinx that had been cast her way. It knocked her back, causing her to stumble slightly, though she didn't hit the ground. Well, okay then. This was the duel she'd been hoping for.
Having righted herself rather quickly, the Ravenclaw kept her feet moving, circling the blonde. She wanted to increase her chances of a hit and she knew exactly how to do that thanks to all the studying she'd been doing for NEWTs.
"Incarcerous!" It was said clearly and in conjunction with the Homing Spell, which would increase her chances of hitting her target substantially. Her eyes never left the Slytherin, her expression eager, waiting to see if it worked.

Well, okay, not quite but close enough. The spell had hit Maddie which was satisfying enough for now. And despite the fact that Maggie was trying VERY hard not to look too smug, she....just didn't quite succeed. Seeing her offensive spell hit the Ravenclaw was just too good. Unfortunately, the other girl hadn't fallen-
OMG!
Ugh, seriously. She had to stop getting distracted by her own awesomeness. It was bad. And counterproductive. To escape the spell Maddie had sent her way Maggie first threw herself onto the floor, landing on her back (OUCH!) but the spell was following her. Like....no. That was bad. "PROTEGO!" Wow. Okay. That was close. Very close. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. And what made matters worse was that Maggie was now literally on. the. floor.

If Maggie was going to use the smoke to her advantage, so was Maddie. The seventh year decided that her opponent's inability to see what she was up to was beneficial for several reasons. It gave her time to take a breath, evaluate her performance, and to cast a quick and quiet Disillusionment Charm on herself. She then proceeded to move away from where she'd been standing before. When the smoke did clear, Maddie cooper would be no where in sight.

There were probably people who would consider casting that spell a bad move but at least it gave Maggie enough time to get up off the floor unharmed. Quickly tucking a strand of hair that had gotten loose back into her pony tail, she then started moving again while she waited for the fog to clear. Now, she was ready to hit Maddie back. Just a little longer...she should be able to see her in just a-

Nooooooooooo.
Maggie bit her lip just in time to keep herself from literally groaning out loud in frustration. All she ended up doing was wrinkle her nose. Like, seriously? SERIOUSLY? Invisible. UGH! Hopefully the other girl wasn't sneaking up on her right now. Ugh Ugh Ugh. She tightened her grip on her wand and turned on the spot once, pointing it at every possible direction just in case Maddie was already sending spells her way.

The satisfaction one could feel because of an enemy's reaction was immense and Maddie found herself grinning as Maggie realized what she'd done while she wasn't looking. She could almost feel the frustration radiating off the blonde and she couldn't blame her, not really. She'd have been frustrated too had the roles been reversed. Lucky they weren't.
Maddie was prepared for Maggie's next move and expecting it, she was able to position herself behind and to the left of the sixth year so she had a good position to catch her off guard when the spell she'd cast revealed her. "BOO!" She said loudly, almost teasingly. Moments later casting a series of spells at her opponent.
"Calavrio!" From what Maddie knew about the younger girl, this particular spell was one she'd want to block at all cost. She imagined the Slytherin couldn't deal with being seen with no hair so she was banking on her focusing her energy on not being hit by this particular spell, giving her more of a chance to successfully cast another on her.

The moment her own spell was in effect, Maggie let out a small shriek in surprise. OF COURSE Maddie was behind her. But unfortunately not where she'd pointed her wand. Nope. The other side. Ugh. Of course. This was very embarrassing and the little wince she hadn't been able to contain wasn't exactly helping either. UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH! The other girl got a glare for that. NOT FUNNY! Not funny at all. If she knew of ANYONE who'd just laughed at her then she would probably hex them. For sure.
As it were though, the only person she COULD hex right now was Maddison Cooper.
WHO WAS CURRENTLY SENDING HORRIBLE SPELLS HER WAY!?!!
"Protego!" Maggie cast the spell so forcefully that when it hit her shield it deflected back to the other girl. Let's see how Maddie liked having no hair! HA! Stepping backwards and to the side she took a moment to think over which spell to use on the Ravenclaw. Like, she'd learned from her mistakes. No impulsive-
Oh no.
Maggie did not anticipate the spell headed her way AT ALL. It wasn't fair either. Like, it was a non-verbal one too. UGH. UGH. She heaved. No. This was so gross. Could she like die right then and there? Without thinking of possible consequences, she turned around and leaned her forehead against the wall. Mostly so the people watching wouldn't be able to see her throw up slugs.
Ugh. Hopefully the effect would wear off enough for her to use her wand again soon.

Maddie wasn't fast enough to block the rebounded spell and even as her hair started to fall out, the balding brunette kept her wand trained on Maggie, waiting and watching to see if she'd start to vomit those disgusting slugs. Ew. Yup. There they were and honestly, if Maddie didn't find her opponent to be such a horrible human, she might've even felt sorry for her.
...Maybe not.
Her hair was falling out, yes? Back to that. Lucky for Maddie, her face was aesthetically pleasing enough to rock even the no-hair look but still, it wasn't ideal. It didn't do anything to her ability to cast spells, though, and they were still in the duel.
"Expelliarmus!" The eighteen year old threw everything she had into the spell, just wanting this to be over as the image of the blonde vomiting slugs was starting to make the Ravenclaw a bit queasy. Perhaps it was the sound more than the sight. Blergh.

Oh, yeah, also while dueling someone you did NOT like at all and are currently losing to due to the throwing up of slugs. Yeah. That was the worst feeling ever. Wasn't there some kind of rule that Maddie had to wait for her to NOT BE DEFENSELESS like this before attacking again? WAS HIRSCH SEEING THIS? WHY WAS HE NOT JUMPING TO HER DEFENSE??
THIS. WAS. NOT. FAIR.
Maggie heard the spell and while the heaving was slowly becoming less frequent she still didn't have the strength or agility at the moment to defend herself. Feeling her wand leave her hand she couldn't really do anything about it. Instead she groaned softly, her forehead still resting against the cold wall. Was it over? Could she like die right here? Yes?
The worst part was that she couldn't even appreciate Maddie without her hair. Ugh.
elephant-astic•wanderlust•stay in the ninedaaays the original Taco Belle•look at the flowers✿
Moving quickly, Maddie placed her foot on Maggie's wand and gently rolled it towards her half of the room and out of the blonde's reach. She wouldn't put it past her to be acting and there was no way she was going to touch her wand, in case it'd landed in some of those thrown up slugs. Yeah, yuck. No thank you.
Next it was time to remedy this no hair situation. "Finite." There, that was better. She felt more like herself already.

What was it with the sixth - and seventh, in the case of Miss Cooper - girls and their need to be, well, less civil towards each other? This wasn't the first duel in which this was happening and frankly, the man was slightly alarmed.
But hey, at least no one was seriously injured this time. Even if there was more hair loss.
Hogwarts students and their hair.
That didn't stop the man rushing towards the two girls, particularly Miss Traulton who was too busy to notice the end of the duel. He avoided the slugs being vomited up, though, but that didn't stop him from sliding a little on the guck and slime that was there thanks to the appearance of the slugs. He cast a Finite Incantatem towards her which, hopefully, was going to deal with the slug vomitting issue. "Miss Traulton? How are you feeling?"
Oh, and he needed to say something to Miss Cooper, didn't he?
Turning to the Ravenclaw, he shot her a small smile. "Excellent display of spellwork. Both of you. And well done on winning your first duel, Miss Cooper."
