The vast Hogwarts Library contains tens of thousands of books and hundreds upon hundreds of bookshelves lining the numerous narrow aisles. To prevent students to get lost admist all the different sections Mr Kitridge has put up clear glowing signs to lead them in the right direction and firefly lamps here and there for light. If you inspite of the signs get lost you can always ask the permanent portrait residents for help. Temeritus Shanks and Valeria Myriadd know all the inns and outs of the library almost as good as the resident librarian.
So why not go read up on dragons in the dragonolgy section, look up famous legislators in the legal section or see if you can find the invisibility section? Don't tell Mr Kitridge but word around the halls is that the labyrinth with its many dark corners and aisles is the perfect place to play hide and seek but only if you don't get caught!
Daxton had always had mixed feelings about the book labyrinth. He had wanted to avoid it, purely because it seemed far more chaotic than the rest of the library, and there were plenty of opportunities for people and things to hide around dark corners and jump out and attack him if they knew he was here. But Daxton had made it a goal of his to attempt to read as many books in the library as possible before he either graduated, left, or was unceremoniously kicked out (an eventuality that was seeming more and more likely these days). His ideal, potentially unrealistic goal was to try read every single book available.
So he had not avoided the labyrinth for long, deciding instead to always come here to look for books at a completely random time. That way, nobody could anticipate his comings and goings, and for once, the lack of structure felt safer.
Tiptoeing barefoot through the labyrinth - his preferred method of walking - Daxton managed to keep his footsteps light, and nearly as silent as he himself was. The lack of school robes helped; none of that awful swishing or rustling to announce his presence. He moved further and further into the labyrinth of books, memorising the path he had taken as he went, and looking out for any books on magical theory. Magical theory and science, to be precise, though he always liked to keep an eye out for more Defence books, and of course, his ongoing pursuit of knowledge about the many subjects that had captured his interest.

Leo pushed an overloaded book trolley with him towards the section that everyone referred to as in short 'the labyrinth of books' after breakfast in the relative peace and quiet before the students found their way to the library to study. No running feet. No voices. It was one of the times of day that Leo enjoyed the most. It was then that he could get a lot of work done without being interrupted. Don't get him wrong he loved the student interactions but sometimes they tended to just add to his list of things to do rather then make it shorter.
Could you blame a librarian for wanting to spend time with just his precious books and the smell of them? Probably not Leo reasoned as he headed for bookcases the stored the books on magical theory. That explained why things were as they were in the world. Gathering up a handful of books Leo headed into one of the aisles spotting a student at the end of it perusing books, barefoot and without school robes.
This student he however didn't need any school robes to recognise from a short distance. Stopping Leo called over genuinely curious. "Good morning Daxton, what book has drawn you here in the early morning without proper footwear or robes?" It had to be a special book, right?
Chloe enjoyed the silence that the library brought.
The castle seemed to vibrate from Gryffindor house's sheer existence and sometimes it was nice to get away from all of that bustle. The Common Room was preferred as well but with Halloween just around the corner couples were slobbering all over each other because of certain Halloween traditions. Costumes brought out the PDA in older students.
And so the blonde third year was absolutely hiding in the library. It was cozy, quiet and, typically, people left her alone when she was here. Save the one or two times people thought sitting in the library and studying was an open invitation to talk to her.
Newsflash: it wasn't.
Curled up with her book, she read through her Herbology homework.

Dante had some free time and figure the library was a good choice this day. He tended to avoid the place this year considering he was here way too much last year studying. Pretty sure one of the tables had his drool permanently on it from him napping while his head was in his textbook. Anyway he was here for books on gravity resistant trees.
Probably his favorite thing in Paul's greenhouses besides what is in greenhouse 4. Well he was until he saw Chloe.
Which he had not bothered since Bastien told him not to, so you are welcome. Still no harm in seeing what she was doing
"Fancy seeing you here Chloe. Not reading up on any more diseases are you?"

Chloe didn't know Bastien had told Dante off. If she did she would have gone ALL feminist crazy on her friend. Bastien should count himself lucky.
Regardless, she was not happy to see Dante. He made her eye twitch.
The third year crossed her arms when she heard his grating voice. "What do you want?" If her voice sounded chilly that was because it was. She was not keen on spending any time with the younger Barrington.

Well someone was suspicious and all he did was ask a question and smile. Rude Ravenclaw. And what did he want. Right now a nap would be nice. But he would want to do that in his bed not here in the library. Also some food would be good. Other than those two things he just need to find the book he was looking for. But that could wait.
"A thousand galleons would be nice. But i doubt you have that."
He looked down at what she was reading and could only see the first question. Well you cant knock someone for doing homework.
"Also number one is wrong on your homework."
Dante replied smiling. Why he was trying to help her. Who knows.

If the footsteps had not given away that there was someone nearby, the sound of the trolley definitely had. Even as Daxton stared at the books lined up on the shelf immediately in front of his face, he focused more on the sounds that were slowly approaching, attempting to make a deduction on who was most likely to round the corner. Most likely was Kitridge, given the trolley, the weight of the footfalls, and the early hour. But it could just as easily been an over-eager seventh year, wasting their time by working in the library.
He did not have to wait long to find out the answer, and even as Daxton reached out to pull a book off the shelf at random, the Librarian came into view right at the very edge of his eye line. Daxton did not look up just yet, and instead chose to pretend to flip through the book he had picked out, which just so happened to be one he had read before. Scrunching up his nose ever so slightly, Daxton returned the book to the shelf just as he heard Kitridge call across to him.
Glancing over, and then back at the shelves straight ahead, Daxton gave an automatic shrug. Being so used to people pointing out his strange attire, he did not pay much attention to that part of the question, but became fixated at once on the idea that a specific book had drawn him here. Perhaps it was true, in a way; Daxton was always on the lookout for those perfect books, the ones that perfectly satisfied his ongoing quest for knowledge in any given subject. Such books were hard to come by, though, no matter how many times he had browsed even the enormous collection here at Hogwarts.
Eventually, Daxton looked over at Kitridge again, and gave a simple shake of the head, to indicate that he did not actually know what it was he was looking for. Not today, at least.
The remark about his shoes and robes went unaddressed, as Daxton had completely failed to pick on its significance. He pulled another book from the shelf - this time bearing a title that he recognised from his 'To Read/Research' list - and rifled through the first few pages.

"No, I didn't...." Why would he even ask that kind of question? Was he even on the same planet on as her? She was asking what he wanted, as in why he was there. Not anything to do with money.
Ugh. Dante.
She flushed red. This was why she hated Dante. Her homework was fine.

"It's not wrong," she spat back.
Was she trying to say something. Nevermind. Not like she would repeat herself anyway.
He could hear the dislike coming out from that remark.
"You sure because it looks wrong to me. But if you don't want help from someone not terrible in herbology"
Her loss. Dante shrugged

All conversations with Daxton since the boy had started Hogwarts 2 years before had been a challenge and a test. Given that the boy did not speak. Today it'd be no different Leo concluded as he pushed his trolley further into the section. The automatic shrug told him that he hadn't been the first person and probably wouldn't be the last person either to comment on Daxton's strange attire. He did however feel the need to ask and get it confirmed. "You wear proper school attire and footwear to classes, right Daxton?" He hadn't heard any grumblings about it from his colleagues though.
Gathering up some books from the trolley Leo moved from shelf to shelf to put the books back where they belonged in neat alphabetical order after author. Coming closer to Daxton, the trolley moving after him Leo commented as he put up more books. "Well perusing around among books can lead you to find a book you didn't know you were looking for until you set your eyes on it."
Watching as Daxton pulled out a book from the shelf and started to rifle through the pages Leo asked curiously. "What book are you looking at now?" If he knew that he could help him find other books on the same theme. Before Leo asked about the massive amount of points Daxton had lost already in the term.

The question from Kitridge was, perhaps surprisingly, very difficult to answer. Daxton, who dealt mainly with facts and concrete concepts, was often thrown when it came to more subjective matters. What exactly was meant by 'proper attire and footwear'? If Kitridge was asking whether Daxton usually wore robes and shoes to class, then the answer would be no. But Daxton did wear his uniform... just not all of it. More notably, he was not always called out on it, meaning it could not be terribly improper. In the end, Daxton just nodded his head, but avoided looking directly at Kitridge. It was hard to know for sure what the correct answer was, and it was hurting his head trying to think of it right there on the spot, so Daxton had decided to simply default to the answer he was sure Kitridge wanted.
As far as Daxton could tell, the book he had found might be of some use. His interest in the science behind magic had steadily grown more and more pressing. It seemed to him that the more he understood about why magic worked, the more likely it was that he would be able to harness it. He had read plenty of books and articles from the school of thought that magic and science were utterly separate, but Daxton firmly disagreed. At the heart of magic, at the heart of everything, there was science. It was just different to non-magical science, obviously. Likely a whole new set of rules. How anyone could not be interested in that, Daxton did not understand.
Kitridge's voice drew his attention once more, and he looked back up again, unable to keep from noticing how he was not quite so imposing now that Daxton was steadily catching up to him in height, but still imposing enough. After regarding his Head of House for a moment, Daxton obliged, holding up the book and showing the title on the front cover: Elemental Magic: The Science of Spellwork. Had he been able to, he might have chosen that moment to launch into an explanation of his interest in the subject, but for obvious reasons, he could not. Writing it all down just was not the same.
Not that it mattered, because in the next few seconds, Daxton's eyes had drifted back to the shelves of books and he had spotted a familiar title among them. At once, Daxton reached out and quickly snatched it up, staring at the cover as though he could not quite believe what he was seeing. This was a book all about non-verbal magic, the 'ins and outs' of everything, and he was fairly certain there were a few chapters on wandless magic in there too. For the past two terms, Daxton had searched every inch of the library for this book, and never once found it; all the copies had probably been hoarded by older students. For the past two years, Daxton had made do with other, lesser books, and plenty of them. But now he finally had his hands on this.

The interesting and equally challenging about conversations with Daxton was that because he didn't speak you had to read body language and gestures. You had to be a code breaker. Leo interpreted the nod of the head as if to classes Daxon at least wore shoes, school robes and his uniform. But outside of classes he didn't wear his full uniform since Leo assumed Daxton thought it wasn't required. Something to ask Headmaster Sahnoun about the next time they conversed over dinner or met in the staff room.
Grabbing an arm load of new books from the trolley Leo started to shelf them as Daxton showed the book he was flipping through. Elemental magic: The sience of spellwork. Leo read silently to himself. Turning his gaze to Daxton he said "I didn't know you were interested in the theory of how spells are constructed? And elemental magic? Do you want to learn more about spells and charms connected to the elements like for example earth, wind, fire, water?" If he was Leo could understand why. He had also been fascinated with those things when he had been in school.
Gathering up a new collection of books Leo walked closer to Daxton he saw that the boy had all his focus on the books on the shelves. His eyes scanning the titles. When he snatched one book off the shelf and stared at it Leo couldn't help but glance curiously at the title and then comment to Daxton thoughtfully. "Learning non-verbal magic I think would really help you out in classes and make it easier for you to learn spells as well." Leo wished he could have thought of that to help Daxton with his studies earlier. But it was what it was.

The nod seemed to have done the trick, and it appeared to Daxton that he had given the answer that Kitridge had wanted, enough that the matter was not pushed any further. He shuffled through the books he now held, considering them, as though deciding which he might choose to take out of the library, though in actuality he knew full well that he would take them both - and, indeed, any others that might take his fancy. A fast reader, Daxton could get through large books with heavily specialised terminology in a short enough time that only taking out one book at a time was highly illogical.
To Kitridge's question, Daxton gave only a shrug. Truth was, his real interest lay in the technical make-up behind the magic. The question of 'why' was what drove him forward... of course, he would never say no to learning any type of practical magic at this stage, what with knowledge being power, and power being of utmost importance.
But it was the acknowledgement of non-verbal magic that really drew Daxton out of his introversion for a moment, ever so slightly. He looked right up at Kitridge at the mention of it, then retrieved his notebook and pen, flipping to a new page and writing out a long message for his head of house to read, a message that could not be conveyed through simple nods, shakes of the head, or shrugs. Once he had written it down, Daxton held up the notebook for Kitridge to read, keeping a firm hold on it as he himself looked back to the shelves once more.
'I have been researching and working on casting non-verbal magic since my first year. Most people seem to think that it is possible without mastering the verbal incantations beforehand, but I do not think it is impossible with sustained effort and a long time of practice. I think most people cannot do it, because they are so used to talking and casting spells verbally because they can, and they are impatient and not powerful enough.'
The underlying message of what Daxton was trying to say was, of course, that he did not think himself like everybody else. He thought himself quite capable of mastering non-verbal magic without first managing the incantations, if it came to that. That was not to say that he was not trying to cast the spells verbally in his own time, but that as he simply could not get the words out, his chances would be better this way. Of course, given the amount of control he had had over his magic before Hogwarts, without ever saying a word, he was much more confident in this matter than he was willing to admit.
Looking away from the bookshelves, Daxton turned his eyes to Kitridge once more, searching his face for a recognisable expression, but with his gaze frequently flitting elsewhere - making him seem much more shifty than he was (which was saying something - and never quite looking him in the eye.

Vaguely Kitty wondered why she thought she would find moonstone powder in the library. But the potions storeroom was locked... She had to look. The light's wants and needs had to be attended to.
It was weird being in the library now, especially after hearing accounts of how she supposedly removed all the books off the shelves a month ago. Apparently all the books had been put back, so how true or not true those stories were, Hadley wasn't sure. But it still creeped her out being here right now.
And she probably wouldn't be here if she didn't need more information on how to become an animagus. Well that what brought her here. Right now she wasn't entirely sure where she was within the labyrinth. That wasn't true, but pretending she was lost made it an adventure and somehow made it less unnerving. Shrug.
But seriously, where was the section on animagi? Did Kitridge move it? With a sigh, Hadley tucked her dark red hair behind her ear and made a left at a fork in the labyrinth.

And just around that fork, leaning against a shelf and snoozing away was Maddie Cooper, exhausted from her latest study session. A session that'd taken place in her dorm, mind you. Napping in the dorm, however, was strangely not as inviting as napping here. Something about the lighting and being surrounded by books was comforting to the eighteen year old, even if her current position was blocking the path of anyone trying to get by her.

Unfortunately the second year teen was more focused on scanning the subjects of the books than looking for any obstacles in her path. Hadley's foot collided with Maddison's leg, half-tripping on, half-stepping on the seventh years leg. And down Hads went. Hard.
Anger flared in her, like it did so easily these days and she had to take three deep breaths to keep from snapping at the older student. She had enough Ravenclaws that hated her, she didn't need any more. "Okay," she said at last. "That wasn't entirely my fault." As if to emphasize the fact, Hadley gave Maddie a very pointed look.

Daxton was too introvert for his own good Leo had concluded a long time ago. That he didn't speak made conversations with anyone; peer or adult an interesting challenge. Especially since you had to focus most of your attention on the boy's body signals like shrugs and head shakes. Leo had been interested in the how and why magic worked but at a slightly older age.
The mention of non-verbal magic from Leo caused Daxton to surprise him by actually looking right up into his eyes, for a moment before he retrieved a notebook and pen and started to scribble down a long message for him to undoubtedly read. He had managed to catch the boy's interest and draw him out of his bubble for a little while at least. Leo felt just a little accomplished. This was worthy of Cassie knowledge later that night.
Taking the notepad from Daxton he read the message through silently before he handed the notepad back and responded quietly. "I agree with you. Nothing is impossible if you are willing to put down the effort needed to practice hard and consistently. You might be right that non-verbal magic would come easier to you then to your peers who talk and cast spells verbally every day. You have another view of things than many of your peers do and you should use that to your advantage. Do the professors give you extra time to master the spells being taught in classes?"
Leo did hold a silent hope though that eventually Daxton would be able to speak verbally with those around him. He just needed more practice and more confidence in his voice and abilities. "If you are interested I can help you practice non-verbal spells after dinner a few times a week? Like a private tutor?" Why Daxton's gaze kept flitting elsewhere, around them at the other books made Leo wonder if he was up to something fishy.

Having been unceremoniously stepped on and then chastised as if she were a small child, one could understand why Maddie might not be the most cheerful claw as she sat up and rubbed her legs.
"Yes, I can see how you not looking where you're going would be my fault, too." The seventh year nodded solemnly, looking past the younger girl to see if anyone else had witnessed this injustice.
Noting that she'd have a lovely bruise in the morning, Maddie pushed herself to her feet and considered the situation. "Where were you off to in such a hurry?" Perhaps if she had a good reason, the brunette wouldn't be as bothered.

"Yes, I can't possibly see how blocking the aisle contributes to someone tripping over you." the girl snapped in a vaguely mocking tone. "Merlin! I didn't say it was all your fault, only that it wasn't all my fault." She sat up, annoyed. "There are chairs to sit in you know?" Some big and comfy and perfect for napping even!
The nerve of her! Just because she's older doesn't mean she gets to push around Hadley. Nosireebob. Hadley took a few calming breaths, feeling her temper subside a little. She got up after the girl and brushed herself off. Then she rubbed her shoulder which took the brunt of the fall. "I was looking for the animagus section. Have you seen it?"

Maddie simply smiled, amused. This one was easily angered, wasn't she? She'd be keeping that information in mind in case she ever needed to use it. "I'm aware." Of the existence of chairs, that is. Truly inspired invention.
"I haven't. I'd suggest asking one of the portraits. Word is they're experts on all things relating to this place." See? She was being helpful. Even after being stepped on.

Kitridge's statement was met with a long pause from Daxton, followed by a very small, almost imperceptible shrug of the shoulders. There were plenty of impossible things. To say that nothing was impossible was inaccurate, and that was true even with magic introduced to the equation. But even the things that were possible with the right amount of effort and hard work, not to mention intelligence, were practically impossible for the majority of people in the world, because most people were utterly useless.
Nevertheless, it was true that Daxton was likely to find non-verbals much easier to accomplish than his classmates. That was just simple logic; his entire world was non-verbal, and he had a very strong mind, and he knew it. He did not need anyone to reassure him of what he could accomplish. To Kitridge's question, about extra time in lessons, Daxton simply shook his head. He was neither allotted, nor did he require extra time in classes. In fact, he tended to avoid practical classes the majority of the time, but if Kitridge did not know that, Daxton would not be the one to tell him.
While they stood there before the bookshelves, Daxton again turned his attention to the books he had collected. He moved his own notebook to the bottom of the pile, before opening up the now-on-top text and flipping through some of the pages. Looking busy, looking occupied. It was not lost on Daxton that he was currently alone with his Head of House and it was clear that Kitridge might take advantage of this situation to bring up some of the trouble Daxton had recently found himself in. Though he was not necessarily scared of any further repercussions, it just meant hassle. Aside from anything else, Daxton was still very much on his guard.
With this in mind, he started to take half a step away from Kitridge, but the last question had him stopping in his tracks, and looking up in surprise. Working on non-verbals with Kitridge? A private tutor? Even Daxton could not deny that that would be of some benefit, and might even speed the process along. But there were definite disadvantages too, including opening himself up for more opportunities to be questioned about any trouble he might end up in, or inadvertently letting Kitridge learn more about him, more information that could be used against him. Not to mention that accepting the offer would mean accepting help, which was something that Daxton would outright refuse to do.
It was for that reason that - despite wanting almost nothing more than to manage non-verbal magic - Daxton shook his head fervently, denying the offer of help in favour of his dignity. It was not unlike his refusal to let Primeaux give him any assistance; Daxton wanted nobody to claim credit for any future greatness. In his stubborn and troubled teenage mind, the most important thing was to rely on nobody, to be totally independent, no matter what.

The shake of the head Leo interpreted as a no from Daxton. He didn't get extra allotted time in classes for spell practice but then again he knew that Daxton had done his best to chose non- spell practical electives which seemed sensible given that he was trying to teach himself non-verbal magic instead. Understanding Leo still felt the need to state. "There is nothing wrong with asking for more time or some extra assistance from professors or staff, i hope you know that Daxton? It's a child's right." As a kid you weren't always supposed to be able to manage everything by yourself. You were allowed to rely on people and depend on people and most off all you didn't need to be in dependant when you were just in your early teens. Somehow he did get the impression though that Daxton felt like he had to do that. He had to manage things on his own and count on nobody. It was sad.
When Daxton turned his attention to the books he had collected Leo took a moment to continue to put up the books he had lying in his trolley on the shelves around them. He paused with a book in his hand as he saw the surprise in Daxton's eyes at his offer to tutor him in non-verbal magic. As Leo feared the boy declined his offer to help him master non-verbal magic quicker. Why Daxton was so stubborn he didn't understand but it was ultimately his choice. If he didn't want tutoring help then he wasn't going to push it on him.
It seemed like a high time to ask Daxton about his detention and heavy point loss last week. It had not gone unnoticed. Putting up a book in the DADA section he asked turning to look at Daxton again. "Can you enlighten me as to why you were in detention last week and lost Ravenclaw so many points for your actions?" He knew why since the professor involved had filled him in but Leo would like to hear Daxton's version of events and give advice even if he doubted that the boy would care to listen.

Azura lumbered slowly to the library.. Her head tilted at a weird angle as she stiffly moved towards the library.. Surely book had to be here? Place full of books!
Azura started to rummage through the stacks, tossing books over her shoulder as she looked at them briefly.. "Azura must find book.. " The purple eyed teen was murmuring to herself as she clumsily threw books over her shoulder..
"Not book, not book..Azura find right book.."
She giggled softly to herself as she threw books carelessly.
