Arithmancy Lesson 2

The windows are flung wide open today in the Arithmancy classroom, tempting the fickle breeze into the castle with little success. The professor who opened the windows is currently putting finishing touches on things for this practical lesson. The room's desks are nowhere to be seen, but instead there are rows of pedestals. Identical black pieces of pottery that resemble urns top each column at about waist height.

Hopefully students that enter the room will be wise enough not to touch anything.

Steelsheen 07-24-2016 07:43 PM

Once again this Curly Top nearly missed this classroom because devoid of chairs. But after Charms he knew to check closer before declaring an instant free time for himself.

The big reason why he even entered this room was because of the rows of columns with black pottery resting on top of each one. It’s such a striking sight see. He wouldve also poked and peeked at them too if he didn’t suddenly spot the Professor in the room. "Hiya Prof!" the Gryffindor Ace greeted the woman as he moved away from the curious things.

MunchyBubbles 07-24-2016 08:29 PM

Azura blinked a little as she walked into Arithmancy and there was a lack of..chairs. But the rows of pedestals seemed to explain why they weren't there.. Though now the young teen was a little at odds of where to put herself..

"Hello Professor Tanner. " She said with a warm smile as she waved at her before moving carefully to the side of the room, she didn't want to touch anything or knock anything over, so by the way was safest!

She smiled at the other occupant in the room. "Hey Tenacius, how are you today? " She asked him with a smile as she ever so casually leaned on the wall.

Goblinfrog 07-24-2016 09:26 PM

Kitty followed Azura into the Arithmancy classroom and made her way to the front of the rows. "Hello Professor Tanner," she greeted the professor cheerfully; her gaze going over the interesting black pieces of pottery. Wonder what they were for?

Oh, here came the students! Or student, rather. "Hello, Mister Salander! Good to see you today."

And Azura was closely followed by Kitty. "And Miss Valentine as well! Welcome welcome."

Skylar didn't mind Arithmancy too much; it made sense at least which was always a good thing when trying to learn a new subject if something makes sense. However she did double-back when she entered the classroom because of the lack of desks... They seem to have been replaced by pedestals and pottery. What this had to do with Arithmancy except for the fact that the Greeks invented both, Sky had no idea.

"Good morning, Professor!" Sky exclaimed looking around nervously and wondering where she should sit or stand ...

Saz Hale 07-25-2016 12:15 AM

Abby walked into the Arithmancy classroom and said "Good morning Professor Tanner"

Daydreamer11 07-25-2016 01:29 AM

Janelle was no longer surprised when she entered a classroom that was out of the ordinary. At Hogwarts, you learned to expect the unexpected. Pedestals, not desks.....ok. No biggie. Making her way to her seat, she offered greetings. "Hello Professor Tanner", Janelle said cheerfully.

Janelle sat down and took out her parchment, quill and textbook. Then she took a moment to clear her mind. Arithmancy required focus, so she needed to get her brain ready for the numbers she was sure to encounter. When her preparation was done, Janelle just waited for class to begin.

WhittyBitty 07-25-2016 01:30 AM

Soooooo this was different.

For a moment Esme felt that she might have walked into the wrong room because this was not the usual set up for Arithmancy. Weird stuff liked to happen at Hogwarts, however, and this subject wasn't an exception apparently. She would just go for the ride and hope that things didn't get too crazy though really HOW crazy could numbers be???

Refraining from asking about the pedestals and urns because they would be explained anyway, Esme smiled at the Professor. "Hello, Professor Tanner." Waving at everyone, she took her seat and waited for the lesson to begin.

ginnilie 07-25-2016 03:11 AM

Arithmancy. The most confusing class ever. Even if she didn't understand it, Arielle was always excited for class. First year jitters got her excited for everything. The urns that were in the room looked very expensive and fragile, so Arielle kept her distance. She really just wanted to sit down, but stood waiting for Professor Tanner.

Symphora 07-25-2016 09:17 AM

Henric entered the classroom, greeting the professor with a smile. "Hello Professor Tanner, lovely to see you again." He turned around only to find there weren't any desk to sit. Hmm? Where should he sit? Henric was careful not to accidentally bump into those pedestal-looking things. Why were they there? He had no clue.

StarShine 07-25-2016 08:47 PM

Of course Katherine was wise enough not to touch anything... if she was in the right classroom.

She walked in directly, without really looking at the door or anything because she knew where she was going after 2 years in this castle, but?? Was this..? Only after seeing Professor Tanner was she sure. "Hello, professor," she said and... just picked a random pedestal to stand beside.

"Good morning yourself, Miss Diggory!" Tiara replied.

The students just kept coming, which was excellent. "Welcome welcome!" she answered cheerily.

Next in was another Ravenclaw. "Hello there, Miss Guidry." This eagle proceeded to walk over to her normal spot and sit on the floor in lieu of a desk. Interesting. It didn't look comfortable.

Another one that looked a little unsure of the setup. Understandable, to be sure. Tiara wondered what her students were guessing about the vessels.

Ah, the Head Boy was gracing them with his presence this morning! "And it is likewise lovely to see you, Mister Nicolei."

Confusion once again in the demeanor of a student entering the room. Really, they should be used to odd things in classrooms at this school. "Hello there, Miss Moss," she said cheerily.
CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.

Tiara brought her hands together several times to signal the beginning of class. Any stragglers would just have to bring themselves up to speed. "Today I thought we would deepen our understanding of curse breaking and get in some more practice." No fancy, attention-getting intros today. She wanted them to have as much time to practice as possible. "I would like several of you to tell me one thing you remember learning about curse breaking in our previous lesson."

OOC: Tiara is referring to this lesson. If you didn't participate, it may help you to skim through posts from myself and Kita (hermionesclone) to get caught up. Your charrie can still answer the question if you didn't RP in the lesson!

ChanceCoeur 07-25-2016 11:59 PM

Arithmancy was not one of Noelles best subjects. In fact, she could be downright poor at it. Luckily though, Az was in her class. It was always better with her.

So Noelle was a little side tracked when she walked into the room and the usual desks were no where to be found. Instead, pedastools with some funny looking urns stood on them. Noelle looked around the urns and saw Az with Tenacious. She wasn't about to bother them so she skimmed through the class, trying to find an urn that looked different.

Unsuccessful.
So instead, Noelle took a spot in between Henric and (Arielle) a girl she had seen before in classes but never had spoken to. "Henric!" She said and waved in his direction and then turned to the other side and offered her hand to the girl. Hi! I'm Noelle." Noelle just got her introduction in before the professor was walking in.

Hmmmm. Curse-breaking. This might be a fun class after all.

Noelle remembered how hard it was to break the curse last lesson. But one thing thing stood out to her about that lesson. "I remember a human can't touch the box if a human put a curse on it." At least she hoped that was something. She's forgotten to bring her notes from the last class.

MunchyBubbles 07-26-2016 12:06 AM

Azura saw Noelle and she gave her a brief wave as she turned her attention to Professor Tanner.. She tilted her head a bit as the Professor spoke and she smiled, she had loved that lesson.. Even if she had overthought her numbers a bit..

She raised her hand at the question and spoke. "Curse breaking is dangerous and you need to be constantly vigilant and not trust anything. Your life could depend on it." Yup.. That much she had learned..

WhittyBitty 07-26-2016 12:18 AM

Oh, so they were continuing with curse breaking. Esme wasn't surprised since it was a complex subject and they hadn't managed to cover everything that was needed to know in the previous lesson. Of course they couldn't learn the entire science, but the basics so that they had a fundamental understanding. Something that she was still struggling with in all honesty.

Thinking back on what she had learned, she raised her hand. "I remember that in order to break the curse you need a proper understanding of it." Which could be done with that handy spell they had learned.

PhoenixRising 07-26-2016 01:47 AM

And they were beginning!!! It seemed they would be discussing more deeply into curse breaking, well yay for continuity !! As for what Skylar remembered, well she supposed nothing was not a valid answer and was moderately untrue too.

Thinking a moment as she listened to her classmates, Sky raised her hand "A knowledge of numbers and their meanings is important to the fundamentals and deciphering what curse you are dealing with and how to break it."

Symphora 07-26-2016 02:44 AM

Henric waved back at Noelle, "Hey fighter!" He moved a little for her to stand in between him and another first year Slytherin. He cast a charming grin at the both of them before returning his attention back to the professor. Soon the class was starting and a question was thrown at them. To be honest, their last lesson was quite complex. Arithmancy wasn't his strongest subject, but he had learnt so much from it. Henric raised his hand, "We need to have a proper approach or defense against them. Most of the cursed objects are meant to cause harm so we have to be very careful with them."

MadMadamMalfoy 07-26-2016 03:53 AM

Ha, knew it! As soon as Fiyero saw all the funny-looking black urns, he was sure this was going to be another lesson in curse-breaking. Maybe that meant he wouldn't be as completely lost as he normally was in Arithmancy class... or at least the hoped so!

He was staring intently at the urn in front of him, wondering what kind of curse it held, when Professor Tanner started speaking. While listening to some of his classmates' answers, he thought back to that other curse-breaking lesson they had. So what did he remember about it? Finally something vame to him and his hand shot up. "I remember that you can use a sequence of numbers to figure out what kind of curse is on an object," he said.

Steelsheen 07-26-2016 04:49 AM

Oh hey AZ in da haus! "Hey Az, I'm good! You good?" she seemed sad sometimes he noticed, but not today, or at least not now. Which is a good thing. Ace didn’t like his friends being miserable.

Oh so this is a carry over from the last cursebreaking class? Good because he really want to hone his skulls further. But what did he learn from the last time? "Read instructions carefully, and its better to be over cautious than under estimate the curse then boom your dead."

Jean Granger 07-26-2016 06:38 AM

Arithmancy! Carl liked this subject, even if it could be complicated sometimes. He was surprised to see rows of pedestals and pieces of pottery instead of desks when he walked into the classroom. They were going to do something fun, he knew it! Seeing as the lesson was about to begin, he greeted Professor Tanner with a grin and a nod and quickly found a spot to stand in.

Curse breaking. The Second Year had enjoyed the previous lesson ... but could not remember specifics. He tried hard to remember something and raised his hand. "The spell arithmos revelio scindo helps you get the series of numbers." He said.

"On the right track, but not quite, Miss Summers," Tiara responded. "Only certain curses are activated by human touch, not all of them."

Very true, that answer. "Numbers are the very essence of deciphering and breaking a curse. Though we will be dedicating our time more to the deciphering than the breaking, which is Professor Hirsch's territory." Just as a side note of what to expect.

"Indeed, caution is duly merited, Mister Nicolei." She hoped for a better answer next time from the Head Boy, who was (rightfully or not) held to a higher standard because of his badge.

Another generic response that could be given without even attending the prior lesson. In fact, none of the answers so far had been highly enlightening. She was hoping someone would give some specifics soon. "I trust we will not have anyone going 'boom' today however, right Mister Salander?" At least he hadn't called her 'sir' again.

Finally, someone mentioned the main tool in their arsenal! "Excellent! And remember, class, whilst speaking the incantation, you move your wand from its starting place pointing at the object upwards in tighter and tighter spirals." One of her favorite wand movements, actually.

She flicked her wand and writing appeared on the left side of the board.
Quote:

Parts of a Curse (in order)
Basis - What the spell affects
Kernel/Core - What the spell does
Range - What/how the spell is activated
Cline/Type - What kind of spell it is (2 single digits)
"The different parts of the curse are posted for your ease of access." Because she knew they did not all have their textbooks, their notes, or either of the two. Once more she flicked her wand, and a second list appeared on the right.
SPOILER!!: Number Meanings List
0: Decay, nothingness, cessation
~Hyperventilation, panic
1: Beginning, independence, innovation, leadership, verbal expression
~Numbness, cold
2: Harmony, unity, relationships, collaboration, duality, humans
~Blisters, burning
3: Imagination, house elves/house elf magic, complex thought
~Itching, pain
4: Endurance, sober-mindedness, practicality, complexity
~Warts, pustules
5: Change, freedom, physical world, physical touch
~Shaking, tingling
6: Balance, nurturing, family focus, domestic and work issues, stability
~Dizziness, disorientation
7: Analysis, wisdom, spiritual focus, magic
~Nausea, vomiting
8: Authority, self-mastery, fluidity, movement
~Fever, thirst
9: Endings, metamorphosis, power/strength, short-lived, immediacy
~Weakness, fainting

"This was the list of meanings given to you. However, you may notice that it looks a bit different because I have now added to the list." She did not want to overwhelm them with too many options right away in the first lesson, after all. "The words in red are specifically to be used for the kernel only, and they help to tell what kind of attack you will be under. In reality, there are whole separate lists for each part, but we are sticking with the basic lists for now." And any curse she threw at them would only use these meanings, so that was all they needed.

She had wanted to get right to the practical, and so they would. "Right then. You have what you need. The rest of the class is time for you to practice. You may pair up or work alone, and feel free to call me over if you need me!" Like, if they thought they were about to pass out or something, they should check with her first. "I do have potions ready to take that counter the effects of each curse if something gets triggered, so no worries about permanent damage! Also.. each vessel contains various flavors of Honeydukes fudge, so the more the merrier!"

OOC: This is really an open RP, so be creative! If you want your charrie to get blisters all over, go for it! To help me, please title your posts with the numerization of the curse you're currently working on so I don't have to hunt. This lesson thread will be open until Friday or Saturday depending on you guys. Feel free to VM/PM/Skype me if you have questions or I forgot to include something!

Possible curses your charrie could encounter:
~2 7 15 4 4
~62 65 15 9 9
~2 22 57 4 9
~23 34 27 9 4

Arielle shook Noelle's hand and said, "I'm Arielle," giving a slight smile. She listened to the instructions Professor Tanner was giving, and then looked at the numbers on the urn closest to her. She read off the numbers "23 34 27 9 4" and then turned back to the girl that stood next to her. "Wanna pair up?" she asked her. Arielle then took out a piece of parchment and a quill from her bag, and sat on the ground, as there wasn't really anywhere else to write. She wrote the numbers on the urn at the top of her sheet, and alongside the Basis, Kernel, Range, and Cline headings. Then she stood up, leaving her parchment still on the ground, so she could look at the board for the meanings while examining the urn.

SPOILER!!: notes

They were jumping right to the activity and Esme was more than fine with that. Also, it would be a disappointment if she ended up with chocolate fudge. Of course she would end up giving it to her sister in that case so really it wouldn't be TOO bad... The challenge was the main appeal to her, however.

Since she felt that curse breaking was an important skill to have on the off chance she came across a cursed object - which she knew was slim to nil but that was besides the point - Esme decided that it was best to work alone. This way she could determine what needed to be done by herself and see where her skill level lay. That would be more difficult if she had a partner even if said partner was her sister. At least she had some practice from the previous lesson and that helped her feel more confident in her abilities than she would have if she was shooting in the dark.

Choosing one of the urns to work with, Esme did that fancy wand movement that they had been taught. "Arithmos Revelio Scindo!" With a smile she was pleased to see numbers form above the urn, floating in mid-air:

62 65 15 9 9

Now that she knew which curse she was dealing with she needed to figure out what the numbers meant and go from there. Shouldn't be too difficult. Hopefully.

MunchyBubbles 07-28-2016 02:32 AM

2 7 15 4 4

Azura looked over at the Urns as Professor Tanner spoke and she smiled a bit, she had enjoyed the cursebreaking during the last lesson, though she had over Ravenclaw'd and felt a little dumb about it after words..

Who would have guessed she could have just.. gone right up and just opened up her box? Not her!

Sometimes she wondered if she was put in the right house.. Maybe she should have been a HufflePuff? She sighed a little as she took her wand out and moved towards an urn near the back of the room.. She didn't want a partner, she could do this herself! She did last time!

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, and then.. with her wand starting at her waist she made an upward spiral movement and said "Arithmos Revelio Scindo!" The lovely twirly motion.. Which was really amazing.. Probably the best wand motion she knew up.. ended up at her shoulder and she opened her eyes and smiled as she saw Golden numbers there, floating in the air above her.

2 7 15 4 4

Ahhh.. All right..

"Well, now that I know the numbers, it's just you and me curse.. Let's figure you out."

Yes, Azura was talking to her urn..

Oops?
