Default The Seating Area Outside Professor Flamsteed's Office

Several comfortable looking black leather sofa chairs await you in the small nook outside of Professor Flamsteed's office. The walls are bare save for a framed magazine cover and a large map on the wall opposite of the sofa chairs. Since the Astronomy professor keeps his door shut at all times, you will need to knock if you wish to speak with him. You could try to remove the protective charms placed on the door and break in, but that would not be very wise on your part as you would walk away with lime green eyebrows that won't fade for days and hair growing out of your ears down to the floor. While you wait to be invited in, why not read the latest issue of one of the many astronomy magazines stacked neatly on the wooden coffee table? StarDate Observer or Meteorite Mementos anyone? Do be careful as you take a seat, though. Despite the valiant efforts of students last term you are likely to walk away with a sparkly pink bum thanks to some left over glitter wedged between the cushions.

OOC: Please post in this thread FIRST, by having your character knock on the door. When the professor is ready to invite you in, I will post here letting you know and then you can post in the office. You may RP with friends here, but please try to keep the chit chat to a minimum. Thank you!

So. This was the only option.

With a deep breath and a regathering of her courage, and the hope that the Professor's suit wouldn't be too blinding, Amur rapped her knuckles on the door. Then, not knowing how long it would be, she ambled over to the first thing that had caught her attention. The map. It made astronomy look so much more interesting than she could ever imagine it sounding.
Sitting at his desk looking over a few personal effects, wearing a perfectly normal grey pinstripe suit, Airey looked up when he heard the knock at the door. Knowing he had no scheduled appointments at this time, he stood and strolled over to it hoping that nothing in the form of teenage angst would be waiting for him on the other side.

"Miss Neverwinter," he greeted, spotting the Gryffindor admiring the map on the wall. "One of a kind, you know. Been out of print for quite some time now."

She heard the door open, and Professor Flamsteed's voice. Really, she did. It was just a bit hard to retract her attention from the map. It really was something else. Something absolutely fantastic. Something that she had never, EVER thought astronomy could be.

Thrusting her thumb at the wall hanging, Amur turned her attention warily to the Professor, relief overcoming her when there was nothing jarring about his person. "How come astronomy never sounds as interesting as it looks?"

Why was it that this term, more than any of his previous nine terms here at Hogwarts, was every moment an episode of Students Say the Darndest Things?

Sweet solstice.

"Come again, Miss Neverwinter?" he asked calmly, giving her the opportunity to qualify her inquiry in a slightly less offensive manner.

It was only when Amur turned from the map, and saw the look on Flamsteed's face, that she realized perhaps something had gone amiss. She wasn't entirely sure what, but given the way he had somewhat of an expectant look about him, and his selection of words, she suspected it had something to do with what she had said.

Come again? But he had heard her, surely. It wasn't like she had mumbled. Then again, perhaps the hearing her was the problem.

A thoughtful frown etched onto her brow as she considered the towering man. Her words, came a bit more carefully chosen this time. Delicate minds needed delicate conversation she supposed. Perhaps he was more delicate than he let on?

"How do you keep all this straight in your head?" She motioned back at the map. "Visually it sorta makes sense, in the less confusing manner of things, but verbally it just seems overwhelming. Does your head not hurt with all of the....."

Knowledge? Wisdom? Insight?

"...All of it?"

Clearly hers did.

Yes, that was better. Far less insulting but not any less difficult to answer.

"I suppose I could ask you the same about creatures, Miss Neverwinter," he chuckled while taking a few steps towards the poster and reaching out to touch the glass covering it. "Each of us is wired differently and different frequencies resonate with us. Similarly to why your Gryffindor tie appears crimson and gold whereas a Slytherin student's appears silver and green. You have the umbrella term of knowledge, call this our white light, and it is there for each of us to absorb. Just as light is made up of a rainbow of colors wavelengths, knowledge comes in in a variety of shades as well - in our situation, we are discussing astronomy and care of magical creatures. Now, some people absorb some information and reflect others, the same is true for objects and colors. Your tie appears the color it does because the dye molecules in the fabric have absorbed the wavelengths of light from the violet-blue end of the spectrum. Red light is the only light that is reflected from the shirt. So, depending on which way you choose to take that metaphor, you could say that violet-blue is my astronomy."

Because he absorbed it. Like a sponge. Absorption of waaaaaaaaaavelengths.

Default I need to do this before too much time passes. Ugh.
be curious, not judgmental

The day after the first class of the term, Callum arrived outside Airey's office with the first parchment he wrote on in class in his hands. Not only had the first year written something he wanted the professor to see to show him that he was involved during class despite his muteness, the professor had even asked for him to come visit. Airey had said he had some sort of opportunity for Callum, and the very idea had made it difficult for him to sleep last night.

What kind of opportunity would the professor have for him after only knowing him for a few days?

As he moved toward the door, his attention was caught by the other things hanging outside. The magazine cover in particular made him smile, finding it to be a very flattering picture of the professor, and then he took some time to study the map. Curious, it was, and Callum had loads of questions about it the more he looked at it - so he had to make a conscious effort to pull himself away to knock on the office door solidly three times.

After he did so, he looked down at the unfolded parchment in his hands, reading over the words and considering the various ways this meeting could go and what he would say and what Airey might say and every possibility he could possibly come up with for the coming conversation.

Steady breaths in and out, Kettleburn.

He could ask her the same about creatures, but Amur would and was going to maintain that creatures were hardly comparable to astronomy. They were much simpler and even if you couldn't understand them fully, they were cute or pretty to look at. She was about to tell Flamsteed this too, when he started on....

.....Well she didn't really know what he started on. Something about ties and colors and absorptions. Problem was, absorption and Amur didn't always go hand in hand. If she had heard his thoughts about sponges, she surely would have told him she'd been identified as being closer to a wrecking ball or a hard boiled egg.

Her thoughtful, and somewhat puzzled frown, said it all. "You know....you could have just said you understand it better than other people." Or he could have just said no, his head didn't hurt.

Still, the way he talked was both mind throbbing and intriguing. His mind was both of those things combined. Like a curious clock she'd never seen before. Amur watched the Professor closely. "But....why is astronomy your violet-blue?"

She'd try to go along with the metaphor.

Doing nothing of any real importance in his office - not to the outsider at least. The man liked to think building model rockets by hand was rather significant - the professor looked up when he heard the knock at the door and set down the payload door and tiny brush he had been using to paint on some details. Neglecting to remove his head magnifier from his head, the method he preferred to use opposed to magical means when he was truly working with his hands, he opened the door and peered at the Gryffindor.

Mr. Kettleburn! What a...large head you have? Potions accident?

"Good day, Mr. Kettleburn," he greeted with an awkward lean back to try and see the young man's entire head. "What can I do for you?"

She had, after all, indulged the man and her follow up question even indicated that she had been listening. See? She had even learned something. Fifteen points to Flamsteed.

"I am not sure that I can provide you with a clear answer to that, Miss Neverwinter," he responded with sincerity. "But I suppose you could say that from a young age I recognized that we are personally a way of the universe experiencing itself, that we are all made of star stuff...as one of my favorite astronomers put it. Knowing and understanding the stage on which our life is being played is crucial for any existence to have real meaning. The opportunity that astronomy provides, well, it spoke to me as a young man and continues to to this day."

Was that the sort of answer she had been seeking? Perhaps not.

He paused to look at the Gryffindor. "Was that what you came to my office to discuss?"

He was not left waiting long, and when the door opened... Callum peered up at the professor curiously, his eyebrows raising slightly in alarm.

Odd man, he was.

"Hi, sir," the eleven-year-old replied a little timidly, all the words he had intended to say suddenly catching at the tip of his tongue and making his mouth feel awfully dry. "I..." He paused, looking down at the note in his hand, then extended it for Airey to take. "I wanted to show you what I wrote when you asked us why we study astronomy in class yesterday. I... prefer to keep to myself in a classroom setting, but I wanted you to know that my silence was not from a lack of interest or attention."

That was an important distinction, one he thought Airey would see as quite valuable.

Sir. Right. He ought to nip this little habit in the rear.

"No need for sir, Mr. Kettburn," he replied the young man. "Professor will do just fine." Or simply omit that formality period. He wouldn't be fazed either way.

Accepting the parchment, the astronomer did not yet begin to read it over and instead listened to what the first year had to say. It was almost endearing. Almost. But the Head of House could play along as though he truly found it to be. He was feeling more sentimental recently. "Rest assured, Mr. Kettleburn, that I did not doubt your motivation," he assured the boy. "I know scintillation when I see it." Meaning the first year's innate interest in the subject matter. "But I appreciate you bringing this by to show me," he continued, his blue eyes only reading over the first third of the boy's writing. "You show incredible insight and understanding."

He paused to continue reading.

Was that the sort of answer she had been seeking? Perhaps not.

He paused to look at the Gryffindor. "Was that what you came to my office to discuss?"
And judging by those two opening statements, Amur suspected that simplicity was not going to be a thing in this conversation between them. Which meant that she was going to have to try and hold her ears and eyes wide open to even get a faint glitch of an understanding from her professor.

Needless to say, his explanation made her eyes go a bit wider and a bit more spinny. "Star.....stuff." That was new to her. Even with her father's articles, that was unheard of. Amur's brow knitted and she pulled back, trying to make sense of it as she considered the poster again.

"I'd say doing things of meaning is the only thing that gives existence meaning." Was it okay to disagree with a Professor in such a way? Maybe. Perhaps not. But it was a mumbled sentiment based on the foundation of really not comprehending what Flamsteed was talking about.

But his question had her shaking it all off. It wasn't what she came to discuss anyways, and the sudden return to her purpose had a small spike of guilt for disagreeing with the man so openly. Amur shifted her weight and chanced a glance at the man.

She cleared her throat. "About the feast......" Another shift. "Did...you know who was involved, or responsible, for the food fight when you came to the table?"

Star stuff.

Perhaps the only instance that the man actually appreciated the word. It was a selective process.

"Precisely," he grinned at the Gryffindor. See? She understood his sentiments completely. Or at least that was his interpretation of things. Students really just should not ask him these sorts of questions as he tended to answer in long winded riddles.

He shook his head. "Not initially," he replied. Although he did not feel like this was an appropriate subject of discussion with a student. "I only witnessed Mr. Blaise throwing food at the staff table and then went down. Seeing the majority of the house's involvement influenced the punishment at the time. Afterwhich, further details were brought to my attention and dealt with."

Amur's blinking turned into a flat stare. Did the man know he made no sense? Between him and his pet rock, it was a wonder that a normal conversation could be had. Unless, she had not just engaged in a normal conversation? And really, what was the fun in a normal conversation?

At the very least, Amur knew her head hurt a little with trying to keep up. Maybe she'd understand when she was older and had grown a few more brain cells and connections, and when Flamsteed was older and had lost a few of his own. For now, she'd just......nod slowly.

As for the issue of the feast, there was some relief that it wasn't painted in a weirdly constructed analogy about photosynthesis and sugar production. There was less relief in the fact that Amur still had to shift her weight, and couldn't quite look the man in the eye. He'd sort of known. So why hadn't he ----

"You didn't call anyone out on it, right then and there. Not even Blaise. Some people weren't even involved, and it was obvious they weren't." Here she was most definitely talking about the few that had simply sat in place and become decorations for flying food. "But you made everyone take responsibility." Her brow furrowed and her nose wrinkled. She finally peeked up at the Star Man made of Star Stuff. "Why?"

Airey was not particularly good at reading between teenage lines when it came to these matters. So if Miss Neverwinter had some sort of agenda behind all her questions she was going to have to come clean with them. Or she could leave the man in complete ignorant bliss as well. He had no problem with that.

"I didn't and I never had the intention of doing so at that time," he nodded. "I am not at liberty to discuss the matter in depth, Miss Neverwinter. Student-professor confidentially you see. But I never saw the point in humiliating and drawing further attention to those causing the trouble. It dwells on the past and glorifies the act in some cases." Of which he had done in the past, making it known precisely who was at fault and results had not been as fruitful as they were this time around. The chaos in the Great Hall that night was hard to pinpoint precisely who was what, especially when looking at things from the staff table. He HAD been dealing with that hag of a woman, after all. More than a little distracting. "You are not the first to express some..dismay over how things were handled, and you are entitled to that thought." Even if he thought students threw the THIS ISN'T FAIR card around a bit to often. "But those actions reflect poorly on the house of Gryffindor so it is as a house that we receive punishment. Perhaps next time there will be more caution given by everyone and another embarrassing mess like the opening feast prevented."

Because his SUIT had been horribly wronged. HORRIBLY.

Amur was dead quiet. Throughout the Professor's explanation that was, as he said, not a full discourse, and even afterwards. Just, silent. Watching him in that way that only kids could. With that expression of consideration that only kids could master.

Her brow twitched a little bit, her words coming out carefully. "I....I'm not dismayed over how it was handled." Another brow twitch and finally, she came out of her thoughtful thoughts. A small smile touched the corners of her lips. "I thought it was very admirable. Noble even."

A little shoulder shrugged, Flamsteed's words about dwelling on the past and glorifying it rattling around in her head. She wanted to chew on that for a good long while. Really chew on it.

"I just...wanted to understand why. 'Cause I didn't at the time." She still didn't fully, but that was again, likely a need of growing a few more brain connections. Either way, she came to a quick and sound conclusion. For all his analogies, Star Man was honorable. And she liked honorable people.

Her smile widened into a grin. "Thank you, Professor. For indulging my curiosity. And for.....not turning us all into frogs." There was that too. That would have been absolutely horrid.

Her response was...a surprising one. Or perhaps it had been because had written her off far too early. It had been one of THOSE terms thus far and the added pressure from his personal life was making things feel as though the Earth and Jupiter had switched gravity permanently. Even if such a thing were physically impossible.

"Oh, I see," he responded with an airy chuckle, folding his arms one over the other and leaning casually against the door frame. "Transfiguration is never a form of punishment." Where had he heard that line before? Hmm. "So rest assured that such a thought was never even entertained."

Nor would he be able to perform that on such a massive scale.

"Is there anything else I can do for you today?"

"Is there anything else I can do for you today?"

It.........wasn't?

Amur eyed the man. Somehow, she didn't really believe it. What could be worse than being turned into a frog? Sure they were cute and all, but that was to hold, observe and otherwise appreciate. Having four legs, hopping around and croaking with warts on ones face sounded like a very decent sort of punishment to her. Maybe though, the professors were afraid that students might get mixed up with the real frogs on the grounds? She could see that.

Still, she wasn't going to put it past them to try. Just because such a thought never was entertained, didn't mean it wouldn't be.

So, in simple enough response, so as not to give any of her internal musings away, Amur simply nodded with a noise that sounded a bit like an 'Ah' and a 'Uh' combined. It was curious to say the least, and deserved a throat clearing at the end of it.

That, and a shake of her head. "No Professor. Thank you. That was everything." Just a curious little Gryffindor trying to figure out the heads of the much taller and older adults. There was still a lot of growing to do, and not just in inches.

Giving the man a polite smile, Amur added on a slight wave as she turned to leave. "Have a good day, Professor."

....Awkward.

Clearing her throat, Amur nodded slightly. At least she was agreeing to come with. Truth be told, as much as she would never verbally admit it, she had not wanted to step into that hallway alone. Who knew if the creepy voice and shoe owner would suddenly pop out of the dark. It looked dark down that hall, and Amur's courage felt very small.

"Well.....I hope you're right." For once. For once she hoped the girl's opinion and apparent knowledge was true. As much as they were butting heads already, she didn't want to see Kaycee's hair fall our or her fingernails grow exponentially. Or, whatever other curse could be administered on one's person via a shoe. Toe hair, perhaps?

Sucking in a deep breath, Amur turned into the hallway and started them forward at as fast a pace as she could manage, without looking like she was lagging or trying to run for her life.
Kaycee lead the way out into the hall... down the stairs... then to the astronomy tower. She was doing her best NOT to think about the shoe and the empty hallway. Every time she tried to think there was a reasonable explanation, it seemed less likely.

But... it had happened, right?

As soon as they got to the office, she knocked on the door. "Professsssor!" she called while knocking.

Professor! One of the kids out here was freaking out!

She then turned her attention to the younger girl. "Still have the shoe?" she asked in a quiet voice. Just wanted to make sure.

He would no doubt be seeing her at dinner time in the Great Hall. Sans all the food fighting, he hoped.

With his copy of Usa Major's Guide to Raising Usa Minor: an astronomer's guide to parenting in his hand, Airey took a long sip from his Earl grey tea and turned the page in the book. He wasn't sure that reading about all this was actually helping him with his anxiety.

Thus, the knock on the door was a welcomed surprise.

Jumping to his feet, Airey swung open the door and peeked outside.

"Miss Neverwinter, Miss Richards," he nodded, still just a head peeking out of the door. "How can I help you?"

At least there had been no backpedaling or second questions about what they were doing. Amur could admire that about Kaycee at least. When she said she was going to do something, she did it.

Amur, on the other hand, had several thoughts about dumping the accursed shoe out a window or flushing it down a toilet. Problem was some poor bird would probably snatch it out of the sky or it would poison the water system. So, she was stuck with carrying it at arms reach.

So when Kaycee asked that question, Amur couldn't help but give her a dead flat expression. Seriously, she seriously thought she was that irresponsible that she would drop it. Or was it simply that she was afraid it had suddenly disappeared?

That....that was a good question.

Hesitantly, Amur opened the sweater wrapping to peek inside. She was so terrified of what she might see that when Flamsteed opened the door and addressed them, it startled her bad. A squeak and jump, and almost dropping the shoe and.........it was just Flamsteed. As scary as he was, the shoe wouldn't fit him and hadn't been left by him.

She swallowed hard. "We had a creepy visitor." With that, she held the sweater out towards him, the shoe resting inside.

A...creepy visitor?

Airey wondered if he needed to pay a few of the portraits a visit to check in with them on the happenings inside the Gryffindor common room when he wasn't around, but when he was greeted by a tiny shoe all he could muster to show any inkling of concern was a raised brow.

"A...shoe?" Could the pair be any more ambiguous about what was going on. "One of you like to start from the beginning?" And fill in all the gaps because all he had was there was a shoe, a freaked out Gryffindor, an indifferent one, and a professor.

Which sounded like the set up for a terrible joke.

"We were just sitting on Amur's bed, talking about how we couldn't free the house elves..." Which, was important to note. Kaycee still needed back up on that. So, feel free to give a no there, Professor.

"Then there was knocking at the door." She went quiet for a second trying once again to remind herself it was just some other kid. "There was laughing. Well, giggling. And then the voice asked if we wanted to play."

And then... "It stopped pretty suddenly after awhile."

See, Amur could admire Kaycee's go-getter attitude. What she couldn't admire, however, was the slight bending of the truth. A frown settled on her face as she shifted her hold on the sweater.

"We were talking about the morality of freeing the house elves." That was quite different than talking about how they couldn't, because in Amur's mind there was little reason they couldn't, so she wasn't about to just up and let that one slide.

The rest of the story however, got a nod of approval. Her gaze turned back to the Professor and she held up the sweater a bit more, because he was tall and well, she was still short. "And we found this outside the door. No one there. Nothing. Just this. And it's tiny. Like, baby tiny."

Her gaze went over to Kaycee, a bit of concern etching onto her brow. "Kaycee picked it up, but I think it might be cursed, so....." Well so nothing. What did the Professor think?

It'd better be good. His trust was on the line.

"It was...pretty creepy." Just so he knew. If he didn't, she'd invite him to go into his office and they would do a reenactment for him.

"It was...pretty creepy." Just so he knew. If he didn't, she'd invite him to go into his office and they would do a reenactment for him.

House elves. Right. He had nearly forgotten given everything else this term that he had tasked the two with something regarding them, so it was nice to know that they hadn't forgotten.

But house elves aside for now.

"Hmmm," he said while pursing his lips. "Sounds like a new Zonko's product...if I am being honest. The sort meant to scare the victim as as a prank..." He reached forward and plucked the shoe from the sweatshirt and gave it a look over. He briefly recalled the time he and Maddox had given detention and the astronomer had supplied a porcelain doll that wore similar shoes to this one. Which now made him tempted to blame Daphne. She was the sort to send him dolls as a reminder of how much poltroon she found him to be.

And she would try and scare his own students so they would come crying to him. She knew how he was with tears.

Thankfully, it had found its way to two Gryffindors who were not shedding tears.

Assuming there was a connection to Daphne at all.

"Well..." he continued, giving his wand a bit of a wave over the shoe. "I see no remnants of cursework or any sort of enchantments...so I wouldn't dwell on things. Perfectly harmless shoe you've got here."

And then he offer the shoe back.
