Default the Office of Professor Flamsteed

Perhaps the first thing you notice as you enter Professor Flamsteed's office is that it is...clean. Ridiculously clean. While he is not exactly obsessive compulsive about cleanliness, Professor Flamsteed highly values organization and keeps everything in a specific location. Needless to say, if one of his quills is at an odd angle ... he will notice. The wood cabinets above his desk are filled with all sorts of reference books on all branches astronomy on the left side while the right side is filled with works of muggle science fiction ranging from Douglas Adams to H.G. Wells to Robert Heinlein and everyone in between. His desk is mostly empty except for some black accents and a comfortable looking pillow where the professor's pet rocks, Pebbles and Boulder, tend to rest. Beside this is a plant in a unique looking planter.

On the walls are a few framed pieces of abstract line and paint splatter artwork that Professor Flamsteed has collected over the years along with a drawing given to him by a former student in a black frame just to the left of another large gifted piece of artwork also in a black frame above the sofa. Beside it is yet another drawing, this one signed, in another black frame. There is a black sofa up against one of the walls with a pet house and a pet bed on the floor beside it where Pebbles and Boulder sleep when not sharing the pillow on the desk. To the right of the black sofa and is a wooden closet where Professor Flamsteed keeps a few freshly pressed suits from his extensive collection, just in case, and to the left of this is a rather impressive looking tie display case. Located opposite of Professor Flamsteed's desk is yet another display case, but this one is filled with all sorts of muggle science fiction models - one of which is sporting something on its head - that he has built and painted himself - a hobby of his when he is not busy teaching, grading, or researching. To the left of this case is what appears to be a muggle telephone booth, but upon further inspection of it you will find Herschel scurrying about within.

OOC: please do not post here without having been invited in by Professor Flamsteed from the waiting area or spoken with me OOC. Posting without doing either of these puts your post at risk of being unceremoniously deleted.

Dropping everything he was doing - well, not literally considering the man's desk had to be tidy and organized to his standards at all times - he left his research and frolicked over to the door and swung it open at once.

"I thought it may be you waiting out here, Miss Wright," he greeted the prefect. "Come in for some tea so we can enjoy those?" Yes?
It seemed like Professor Flamsteed associated the smell of baked goods outside his office with her. Interesting. She had been bringing him cookies for as long as she had been at Hogwarts, so he had probably come to expect that it would be her. "Yes, thank you Professor." Tea was always good. Penelope offered the plate of cookies to him.

Entering the office, Penelope looked around. Was the ferret here? He wouldn't try to attack her like those ferrets in the common room at the raffle, right? Why did Professor Flamsteed have a ferret anyway? Why did he like ferrets but not cats?

"May I speak to you about the actions of Mr. Blaise Bellaire and Mr. Bentley Moore?" Specifically the part that involved bothering the prefects. One of the boys had been especially annoying on the train, and the other had thrown food at her at the feast.

"With a reaction of that sort one could come to the conclusion that you were up to no good," the professor mused as he walked cautiously by the Gryffindor towards his office. He did stop, however, to adjust the framed magazine cover of himself that had become a bit off kilter thanks to the boy's head slamming into the wall. Once each angle was back to a perfect 90 degrees, and a ridiculously long lull in conversation while the man fussed to get the frame there, he turned his attention back to the young man.

"Oh, certainly. I was just about to head back into my office for a spot of tea which pairs perfectly with a discussion on astronomy." he replied, pushing open the door to his office and nodding his head inside. "Come on in."

OOC: you may post inside the office now <3
Again Thomas rubbed the back of his neck, he had been so enthralled with the picture he completely let go of everything which caused that reaction. Hearing the astronomy professor's response, he threw his hands up in protest. "NOO! Nothing like that..I was just admiring the map and became to fascinated by it." Sheepish grin, he just knew he was not going to easily live slamming himself into a wall..

"Sounds great." Tea was great, astronomy was great, offices were great, discussions were great, so it should be great. He followed the Professor into the office. The fifth year stopped when he saw the telephone booth, what in the world? Upon further inspection he realized it had a thing inside it. A ferret. He backed away thanks to a certain redhead he was put off of all things ferret. Sitting down the boy adjusted his tie before saying "So astronomy, recently I visited my uncle who is also an astronomy man and I had already been loving astronomy and spoke to my father who was giving me the your a young man talk." Aka the future talk where he tries telling you what your going to do. "I brought up Astronomy, I think it would be.." Fun, Enjoyable...What was the word he was looking for... Realizing he couldn't think of the word he started another sentence instead. "..I want to do something having to do with astronomy in my future but my father has told me there is nothing to do with astronomy except teach which wouldn't be a bad thing because teaching is really fun, but I was curious is he right?" Maybe he put to much faith in his father, or maybe he was looking to prove him wrong.

Gladly accepting the plate of cookies, the Astronomy professor paused for a moment to inhale their sweet scent before following the prefect inside his office and shutting the door behind them both. Wand at the ready, he waved it towards his tea set so it would prepare itself - water had already been added to the pot previously so it need only be heated - and pulled from one of his cabinets his collection of tea for Miss Wright to select from.

Oh? So it was straight to business then? Good, the man did not enjoy small talk when there was a clear agenda to be discussed. "Certainly, Miss Wright. I had been wanting to speak with you and Mr. Baines to get your side of the story," he nodded, having already heard the two Gryffindors' and not being impressed at all. "What exactly would you like to discuss?"

Well, he could relate to that. It certainly was a stellar map and had taken him quite some time to hunt down. Out of print for some 50 years now, so the man was rather fond of it.

"Don't worry, he doesn't bite," Airey assured the boy as he strolled over to his desk. "He may shed on you, however, but I have a stash of lint rollers in my desk that will take care of that. Been debating about leaving him at home with my..." But he ceased his thought there, instead clearing his throat to summon his tea set and filling it with a well placed Aguamenti. "But he seems to like my office so he gets to stay." Despite the fur.

Settling himself down in his seat and adjusting his suit's jacket a bit to minimize the chance of wrinkles, Airey listened carefully to what the young man had to share with him. Although he DID take a moment every now and then to check on the tea's progress. He wanted to ask if Earl grey was alright, but felt like a reflection of a poor bedside manner were he to ask that after all he had just heard.

"Not to speak ill of your father," he began, setting the lid back on the pot and beginning to pour himself and the Gryffindor a cup each. "But he is a bit misinformed, although it IS true that a vast majority of us in the field spend a great deal of time in postdoctoral positions in universities or research institutions before settling down into more permanent positions. What exactly is it about astronomy that fascinates you? So that I may better illustrate this."

Probably just him.

"Certainly, come on in, Miss Hanover. I'll put on some tea."

Okay, why was she nervous again? See. This was why Professor Airey was incredibly awesome. Not even a minute had passed and the redhead already felt better about things. She knew, just knew that her Head of House was the best person to talk to right now. ”Well, I didn’t want to take up too much of your time, Professor.” After all, there were lots of other Gryffindors and … well students in general. He was a busy man.

As she followed him and the offer of tea into his office, she took a deep breath and smiled. The office looked as relaxing and familiar as she remembered and it added to her calming down. As she the small girl slipped into a chair opposite his desk she smiled at him. ”Tea would be lovely, Professor. Thank you. … Has your week gotten better?” AKA, I hope Gryffindor hasn’t completely ruined your confidence in us - we can do anything we want to and will… Just like me. Hopefully if you will help me.

"Nonsense," he chuckled, a dismissive hand wave being tossed at her while he tended to his tea pot by filling it with water produced from his wand. With another wave, the pot was charmed to heat itself and he turned to grab his stash of tea from the shelf above his desk for Miss Hanover to select her brew of choice. "As cliché as it may come across, it is my duty as your Head of House to make time. No bother at all."

Pushing the selection of tea toward her, the astronomer settled into his set. Oh oops...how had that... As discretely as possible, Airey removed the Spock action figure from his desk and tucked it safely in his topmost desk drawer. "Considerably," he nodded with a bashful smile. "Quite the eventful start of term but, it is as they often say - never a dull moment at Hogwarts!"

And he was rubbish dealing with them.

Penelope looked through the tea bags and took out an Earl Grey tea bag. So he had wanted to get her side of the story? "Mr. Moore came into the prefects compartment on the train. When asked if there was a problem or any reason that he should be in the prefects compartment, he said that there wasn't a problem. When asked to leave the compartment, he did not immediately leave." That was her understanding of it. She had not been at all impressed that Bentley had been in the prefects compartment without a reason to be there. "At the feast Mr. Bellaire threw food that was directly aimed the prefects. I believe this may be connected to Mr. Moore being told that he shouldn't be in the prefects compartment." Revenge for being told that he couldn't be somewhere where he wasn't allowed to be? Or maybe they just hated prefects? Flamsteed knew what had happened after that, the food fight. The young Gryffindor boys were accountable for their own actions.

"Mr....Prince," Airey greeted with a somewhat pained expression. "Good day...what can I...actually...could you wait here...for just a moment? I'll be RIGHT back."

Leaving the door ajar, the professor made his way down the hall and towards the loo.

OOC: the door IS open

Just what Airey Flamsteed was doing, Daxton had no idea. But the door... the door was ajar, in the presence of Daxton, of all people. The professor knew of his record, and yet... the way into his office was clear. Daxton stood there for a good long moment, considering the open door, methodically going through every possible outcome of this situation. But it was a moment, he soon realised, that he was wasting, when what he had right here was an opportunity. Exactly what for was yet to be established.

So Daxton went inside, slipping through the just-open door and scanning the area. It was clean; too clean, too tidy. The kind of tidy which made it easy to search, but just as easy to notice anything out of place. A set-up more like Moxley's would have, in a way, been better even if more chaotic, though ultimately it would have been disappointing coming from Airey Flamsteed.

He was methodical about the search, fast, trying cabinets and drawers and the closet, even the tie cabinet, full of neckties that Daxton was eager to pick from and shove into his pocket. An obvious theft, but he was curious to see what would happen... not that it mattered, because everywhere was quite securely locked. Frustrating, but expected. Daxton cast a glance over at the large cage in the office, and the ferret alternating between scurrying around and watching him curiously (Daxton's eyes had been stinging since the moment he had walk into this office, and that creature was surely the reason why), and then he looked at the door. No Airey Flamsteed, but he had been gone for barely ninety seconds. Still, exactly what he was doing was un unknown variable, so he could be back at any second. Daxton was not as concerned by this as one might have expected.

He turned his attention to the research on the desk. No collector's cards or anything here - again unsurprising; such a high value item was sure to be locked away - but now that he was here, Daxton just wanted to take something. He rifled carefully through the papers, no doubt nudging from their original places as he scanned their contents, and eventually picked up an interesting looking book. It would be obvious, so very obvious, but that was exactly what he was going for. He took the book, hiding it half down the back of his school trousers, so his belt held it into place and his shirt covered it up.

That done, Daxton crossed purposefully to the cage with the ferret. He was still out of arm's reach when the urge to sneeze hit. The Ravenclaw blocked it with the crook of his elbow... then another... then another. He stood in front of the cage, trying his best to do the almost impossible and hold back any more. Allergies were ridiculous; the sooner Daxton could figure out how to brew the Antiallergen Potion without having to cast a spell to do so, the better.

When the first assault of sneezes appeared to have passed, Daxton reached down to pull his school shirt up and over his nose and mouth. He carefully pulled the ferret's cage open, listening closely for the sounds of approaching footsteps, ready to react at a millisecond's notice if need be.

It was around perhaps midday when a bat came fluttering in. It was shinier than it should be and perhaps if one looked close enough, one could see tiny gears and pieces of metal that held it all together. What was more interesting was the small brown parcel clutched in it's feet, big enough to fit about two cauldron cakes. Held closed with a simple white string, it looked innocent enough. The bat landed on the desk next to the dropped parcel.

No note on the outside, but it's messenger should have been familiar enough.

Hope made her way to the sofa. Looking quizzically towards the professor. [B]"are you OK professor? You seem a little.. Idk... Jumpy?"

She grabbed a cup of tea thanking flamstead as she began to sip it. She was getting even more nervous because of the nervous energy coming off of Him.

"I'm trying to deal with alot right now, but I'm trying my best." she fidgetted with the cup. She was gonna spill her guts about everything.

"My cousin is missing and I'm so worried about her. And then starting school without her here is almost unbearable. I know she wants me to do good here so I'm trying to do my studies. I've also made friends, so they keep me occupied. "

SPOILER!!: Penelope!

All interesting information, although most of it not new to the astronomer's ears. Although he was torn between amused and impressed by the sense of entitlement that had come over Miss Wright. Sweet solstice how much she had grown from that crying first year in his lessons. It was moments like these that sometimes made this profession worth it.

Sometimes.

Other times, read right now, it was a big of a headache because the man was beginning to feel like all parties involved in this had made some poor decisions that had ultimately lead to this outcome. Although he had no doubts that the majority of that fell on the two Gryffindors involved. Never tickle a sleeping dragon? Try never getting on the wrong side of a Gryffindor!

"I see," he nodded after a few moments. This was all in line with what the two young men in question had shared with him at the end of the feast. Of course, both stories were not entirely the same and what was the honest to goodness truth would probably be something that the professor would never truly know - the whole situation was muddled with too much teenage angst by this point. "I assume you are familiar with Newton's Laws by now, Miss Wright," he continued. A rhetorical question, hence why he hardly paused to allow for any sort of response. "Specifically the one which states for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Now, one may argue that what transpired was a result of this law of motion." May argue, as incorrect as said argument may be. "Students being somewhere that is, technically, off limits to them as it is one of the earned perks of your position. This then prompted you both to act in accordance with what is expected of you and asked them to leave. Said request was then perceived as rude entitlement which then prompted the retaliation witnessed at the feast. Now, what Newton's Laws do not take into account is the variable of human choice and human emotion. I am by no means implying that you and Mr. Baines deserved what happened and I assure you that both boys are being dealt with accordingly, but I am reminding you that with that badge comes the responsibility of assisting Hogwarts faculty in keeping things in order and there will always be those who oppose that authority."

And he would know. He HAD been one of THOSE students during his time at Hogwarts.

"You can commit no mistake and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life. You just have to do the best you can."

Had there been no mistakes committed by all parties involved? Surely not. And there had been no mention of the other prefects involved in the exchange between the Ravenclaw prefects and Mr. Moore and they had still been targets in the food fight. So where were they in this picture? Airey wasn't too sure it entirely mattered. Choices, however, certainly did.

"How you and Mr. Baines choose to carry yourselves after this incident will speak light years of your character, so focus on that rather than what has already passed."

Because all that was being taken care of. Thoroughly.

Ah sweet sweet sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet release!

No longer at risk of leakage, Airey made his way comfortably back towards his office with a content look about his face. Although this look faded when he arrived in his seating area to find that Mr. Prince was gone and his office door still ajar.

"Mr. Prince?" he called, giving the room a look over before reached out for the handle on his own office's door. Huh, perhaps the Ravenclaw had changed his --- "OH, there you are," he greeted upon seeing the young man standing in from of Hershel's cage...covering his nose and mouth? Sweet solstice, had he neglected getting a house elf or two up here to handle the cleaning for too long again? "You're welcome to take him out, if you'd like," the astronomer offered, eyes carefully scanning his office for...well...the second year did have a bit of a track record and the professor was not daft. Although he would be lying if he said he had not had his hopes up that everything was precisely as he had left it.

But, regrettably, it was not. Although the man showed no indication of having noticed this fact.

Even if the selection Mr. Prince had made was a rather good one.

"I'm trying to deal with alot right now, but I'm trying my best." she fidgetted with the cup. She was gonna spill her guts about everything.

"Not at all, Miss Summers," he lied with a dismissive wave of the hand. Nothing to see here. Nothing at all. Ahem.

"Yes..." he nodded gently. "I want to you know, Miss Summers, that Hogwarts faculty are here to assist you in whatever capacity you may need during this time..."

Merlin he should have asked Marion to help with this meeting. She always knew the right sort of things to say at times like these.

The bat landed on the desk next to the dropped parcel.

No note on the outside, but it's messenger should have been familiar enough.

THE PARCEL
Lounging on the sofa with his shoes kicked off, the Astronomy professor was taking a moment to himself and doing another read through of A Brief History of Time and therefore was unaware of the bat's presence until the soft thud of the parcel landing on his desk drew his attention towards it.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, his tone a smidgen annoyed as he had been reading one of his favorite parts before the interruption. Moving over to his desk, shoes still lying on the floor beside it, he recognized the bat at once as one of Medea's creations, which meant he knew precisely who the parcel was from.

Ears reddening as he undid the string, he expected to be wafting sweet scents of baked delights once the lid was removed...but was greeted with no such thing. "These aren't cauldron cakes," he grumbled disappointingly as he began to inspect things. The contents had become a little disheveled in transit, the card stuck to the side for the time being unnoticed, so the astronomer's eyes first fell on the tiny human garments. A gift for Pebbles, perhaps? Although the manner in which his heart was now pounding and surging within his chest silently screamed at him to stop being a naive fool. Hands trembling as he returned the white tiny human garment to the box, he dared not pick up the black one despite it eliciting a small tight lip smile.

But then there was that piece or parchment, the one that he had not seen until now, and he softly peeled it away from the side expecting to see Medea's signature smiley face drawn there in her graceful calligraphy. But he was once again incorrect in his assumptions.

And usually he despised being incorrect.

"Special delivery Flamsteed juni---" He inhaled sharply, his lungs choking on the sudden intake of excess oxygen, and horizontal wrinkles appeared on his forehead as every one of his features elongated. One hand holding the parchment the other to his forehead, Airey stumbled sideways until his hip collided with the corner of his desk. There would be a bruise there later, but he felt none of the sting right now. All senses clouded for now, the only thing he was even moderately sure of was his heart beating in his chest.

But even that was questionable as it seemed to skip several beats here and there and then even seem to stop completely.

Slowly, other feelings began to return. His feet pressed into the bottoms of his shoes. The way the parchment felt like the finest of silk ties in his hand. The smell of his Earl grey tea that was now growing cold on his coffee table. The sting in his eyes from not blinking for several minutes. And then, just when it seemed like all his senses were returning, his vision blurred and he blinked away what he assumed was merely his tear ducts reacting to his eyes being held open for so long.

About the man and assumptions? Today they were ALL wrong.

His vision was still blurred, despite the series of rabid blinks that ensued. His chest heaved a bit and now his heart wasn't just pounding, but swelling. "Stupid...dust..." he laughed to himself as he sunk to the floor beside his desk with a smile on his face, wiping his eyes with his free hand. Reading the words over for the...well...he had already lost track at this point, he lifted the note up to show Pebbles. "Look," he chuckled softly, those pesky dust molecules making his eyes water more. Lowering the note once more, Airey knew precisely what he wanted to do next. His limbs, however, were less than cooperative.

He would just need a moment....or hour...or several hours...and then maybe he could move. Until that time came, well, he would be buffering on the floor in his office with a dopey smile on his face NOT crying from dust and trying to keep his heart from going supernova.

Smiling happily at the waving hand that was being pushed in her direction as he busied himself making tea, Marsha got comfortable in the chair she had chosen. Might as well attempt to make the chair as comfortable as it could be as she might be here a little while. Not into the hours - but maybe half an hour? Who knew really… it would depend how Professor Airey took to her news… and everyone knew that news could potentially be dangerous for her Head of Houses’s nerves and heart.

Looking into the box she leafed through a few flavours, completely missing him moving the figurine of Spock, before finding an apple & cinnamon blend. ”Can I have this one please?” She asked Admiral Airey as she looked back up at him with a smile as she lifted the packet from the large box of tea… how amazing was that by the way? ”Well… either way, I appreciate the time you give us.” Another smile was aimed at the man in front of her and she nodded as she said her piece.

The short Welsh girl couldn’t help but laugh at that. ”No… That’s true, there never is a dull moment at Hogwarts.” Anyone who said there was, didn’t realise that in that split second, something was probably brewing… and she wasn’t talking about tea.

There were the footsteps, and there was the sound of his name being called.

Daxton, who had had the cage open by this point, and was working on coaxing out its inhabitant, quickly shut the door again in the very moment that Airey Flamsteed entered the room (had he already got the ferret out, he would no doubt have hidden it inside his own shirt). That meant his hand was still on the cage when he quickly looked towards the door of the office for the astronomer's arrival.

At the offer, Daxton looked back into the cage, at the curious creature inside, but decided against it. He had as little love for animals as he had for most things, and his allergy to any and all fur solidified that; the only appeal in taking the ferret was that it belonged to Airey Flamsteed, and he had been curious to see how the man might react to the obvious theft. Ferret-napping the thing right in front of him, however, was a little too obvious. In any case, he still had the book. There would be other opportunities.

So Daxton stepped away from the cage again (suspicious? maybe), pulling his shirt down off his face and rubbing at his stinging and itching eyes even while looking towards Airey Flamsteed again and catching the tail-end of his scanning the office. If smiling came easily to him, Daxton would have had to fight one at that moment. As it was, his amusement remained under the surface, while his expression remained as blank as ever. The reason? Like Daxton Prince, Airey Flamsteed was not an idiot. He would no doubt have noticed the missing book, and so far had said nothing. He knew. And Daxton knew that he knew. But did he know that Daxton knew that he knew?

Pointedly ignoring the matter, Daxton rubbed at his stinging eyes a little harder, before forcing himself to cease and desist. He had a reason for visiting this office, and would not be vanquished by allergic reactions to the slinky-like beast running around its giant cage. The Ravenclaw began digging through his pockets for something, being careful not to disturb the book still tucked into his waistband lest it should fall to the floor and give him away. After a moment, he with drew two notes, one from each pocket, each of which got a cursory glance, as though Daxton was double-checking something before proceeding.

"Apologies," the astronomer said nonchalantly towards Hershel without drawing too much attention to the boy's situation. He had never been the best pet owner to the ferret and it was probably for the best that he leave it with Medea the next time he stopped by home. "But perhaps this can help a little with that." Wand out, the professor gave it a wave towards the second year to produce a Bubble Head Charm around the boy. At least it would deter further contamination.

He stood there, his gangly suited frame a temporary barrier between Mr. Prince and the exit. Just in case, well, the young man wanted to come clean with anything before it was too late. Although the man was not terribly optimistic that the odds were in favor of Mr. Prince keeping his hands in tact. "Yes?" he prompted, nodding his head towards the two notes in the second year's possession.

Being patient was so much easier when one was not resisting a spirited potty dance performance.

Smiling across the table, Marsha scooched around in the chair a little to get comfortable (it was HUGE and her feet dangled a good bit from touching the floor) as she waited for her tea to steep just like her Gran had taught her. Looking up at Professor Airey as he spoke to her again she nodded and licked her lips slightly, nervous but not really… Which was a really weird feeling.

”Well, I’m not really sure where to start… so I guess I’ll start at kind of the beginning?” Seemed about right. ”I love running.” Simply put… maybe expand more on that? ”My Tad has always helped me to learn or attempt any type of sport that I have wanted to try but I’ve mostly stuck with running, judo and horse riding.” She added, as if that was important. It probably wasn’t though, she just was struggling to think straight. Whoops.

”I get up every morning and run before breakfast and classes… I ran with Adi, and Reagan and a lot of the other older students, they pushed me to run faster and faster and now I really like running long distance. I love pushing myself to do it in better and better times.” Was she making any sense? Probably not. Sorry Admiral. ”Well, this Summer, one of the coaches for the British Youth Athletic’s Team saw me running.” There… did that make more sense now? Potentially.

"Yes?" he prompted, nodding his head towards the two notes in the second year's possession.

Being patient was so much easier when one was not resisting a spirited potty dance performance.

Daxton looked from the note in his left hand to the note in his right, then back again, over and over, considering them closely. It was during a moment that he glanced up that Daxton noticed Airey Flamsteed pointing his wand straight at him. A sudden surge of alarm and adrenaline went through him, and he flinched automatically, bracing for... something.

But nothing came, nothing sinister in any case. Only the Bubble Head Charm. Daxton, eyes slightly wider in residual surprise, looked uncertainly at the professor, then reached up to inspect his own face. He prodded at the bubble, finding it curious, attempting to test its limits and boundaries, seeing if it might give in and disappear or burst if he pushed at it too much, working out just how much leeway it gave. It served as a decent protection, the Ravenclaw noticed, from the allergen in the room that took the form of a ferret.

He blinked, and looked up at Airey Flamsteed again, prompted out of his reverie by the man's single word. After a moment, he handed over the two notes; the one in his right hand ('I want to read about the science of magic. I checked the library but I thought you might know or have a good one and that I could have it for a while.'), and the one in his left ('I want to move to Gryffindor.'), and went back to poking at the bubble around his face, still consumed with intrigue.

No admission about the other book came, the one he had hidden about his person to steal. Though Daxton knew that Airey Flamsteed knew, he was not prompted to give the book up in the slightest; it was far too tempting to see what might happen if he did not.

Yes. Let's start at the very beginning.

A very good place to start.

When you read you begin with...

Wait. Listening. That was what he was supposed to be doing right now, not singing silently to himself inside his head.

Refocusing, Airey locked his eyes on the Gryffindor and attempted to cease all further musical numbers from entering his mind - but it was rather difficult when they were so catchy. He was well aware of her passion for running, it was hard not to notice the routine she had established for herself over her few terms and he had seen her on a few occasions while taking Pebbles out for her routine walk. But he was not sure where precisely she was going with this...

AHA! There it was!

"DID they now?" he effervesced, setting his cup down more permanetly now and folding his hands on on top of the other on his desk. "And?"
SPOILER!!: stop with the feels .___________.

First Bubble Head Charm, it would seem. Although the astronomer's attention was not focused on the young man's interaction with the enchantment but rather on the two pieces of paper he was now being presented with. Accepting them, he read the the first note - the one about the science of magic - and pursed his lips. Which level of magical theory was the Ravenclaw referring to, he had to wonder? He had in his possession several magical theory books, none of which bore the title of the book Mr. Prince had currently tucked away under his shirt, and each focused on a slightly different aspect of the molecular and metaphysical aspects of magic.

"There is The Fabric of Magic by Robert Waffling and Magic from Nothing by Bernard Throckwaddle are good places to begin," he informed the Ravenclaw as he placed the first note behind the other and read it and his eyes widened significantly. Not because what he read there was shocking in a bad way, it was just...surprising.

And unfortunately not something that the professor could deliver, but surely Mr. Prince already knew this.

"What makes you ask this?" he said, returning the piece of paper to the young man so he could perhaps write on the back of it.

Recycling at its finest, you see.

Hope took a sip of her coffee grinning into it. Professor Flam was a bit of a nervous man. She could tell that this wasn't a very easy or comfortable conversation for him so she decided to help him out.

"It's fine professor. If I have any problems or questions or concerns I will come to you... or another professor for help. Thank you for your concern."

She gave him a smile. She added the other professor part so he wouldn't feel obligated to help her out. So he could keep it calm. she could sense that he didn't like having these kinds of conversations.

As she got up to leave she turned to him, "Do you know if they have found her or Sabbath? I really miss them and I know they need to be here. They are just kids like me. The aurors should have found something out by now. No disrespect or anything. They have been missing for over 75 days. I hope they are still alive." With that she turned to leave. Her heart was starting to break again. She missed her cousin so much.

After only a few short moments, Daxton's intrigue with the Bubble Head Charm evolved from the limits of the spell to the very fabric of it. He ran his fingertips over the surface of the bubble, trying to get a better look at it at the same time and going slightly cross-eyed in the process. It was not an offensive texture, about what he would have expected it to feel like; almost like a balloon but not as unpleasant. He wondered what the 'barrier' was constructed from, and what made it so like a regular bubble yet not as inclined to burst at the merest touch. Was magic somehow woven into it? If so, did that mean that magic was a substance that could be viewed and therefore studied on a molecular level?

Speaking of the fabric of magic, Daxton's attention was diverted by Airey Flamsteed's literature suggestions. He looked up at the man, considering those titles, filing them away in his memory and making a note to check for those books in the library, first and foremost. There was little chance he would find enough information to assuage his hunger for knowledge on the subject in just those two books, but it would be a start. He gave a simple nod of acknowledgement, and awaited a response to his second point.

Realistically, Daxton had known that his statement had been a pointless one. At least, it was pointless on the most basic level, pointless to anyone who might neglect giving it any deeper thought. He had phrased it quite deliberately as a statement, and not as a question or a request, partly because he knew that a house transfer had never once been accomplished in the history of the school and therefore would not be granted to him, but for other reasons also. Reasons that had more to do with why he had even brought up the subject in the first place, reasons that had nothing to do with actually procuring an impossible house change, and everything to do with... well, even he was not yet entirely sure.

Yet that was the question he was being posed, and even though Daxton had expected it and thought his response through (and had indeed mentally rehearsed many potential outcomes of this interaction), he hesitated. One moment passed, then another, before he finally took the paper back, retrieved a pen from his pocket and wrote his response on the reverse, using the palm of his right hand as a sub-par writing surface. When he was done, he handed it back, keeping his expression quite impassive as though he was not fully aware of his dodging the question.

'I did not ask anything.'

By now, Daxton was quite finished investigating the effects of Bubble Head Charm, even though there was much more that could be learned from it. Instead, he watched Airey Flamsteed closely.

He had no doubt that her words were sincere, but whether or not they were entirely truthful was another matter all together. Not that he was any sort of expert on such things. But at least she did not appear to be on the verge of tears right now.

"Anytime, Miss Summers," he confirmed.

Aaaaaand it seemed like that was it, painless enough, and the professor stood to escort her out when she turned to continue to speak. Oh sweet solstice. How did he respond to that sort of inquiry? Something told him that being the realist and telling her to hope for the best but prepare for the worst would go over to terribly well. "I am sure they are doing everything they can," he nodded sincerely. "And may not be at liberty to discuss their progress." In fear that the kidnappers change course when they catch wind of Law Enforcement's movements.

Of course. A misstep that the astronomer should have not only foreseen but avoided. Precise language, right. Ravenclaws especially seemed to be basking in that this term. Pinching the bridge of his nose, Airey tried his best not to look amused by Mr. Prince's answer.

"No, no you did not," he chuckled. "Allow me to rephrase." Not that the man was actually asking permission. "Why do you want to move?"

Want. The boy's own word. It was...an intriguing choice.

The thing was, Daxton could watch Airey Flamsteed as closely as he liked, but that did not mean he understood the man's reactions in the slightest. The most he could do was make an educated guess, or at least file information away to review on a later date, when he had learned more about people and their general social behaviours, or to predict the outcome of future interactions.

Right now, Daxton could not be sure if he was being laughed at or not. The chuckle said that he was, yet he had said nothing that could possibly be considered funny, at least not to his understanding. Not that that had stopped people laughing at him in the past.

His thoughts on the matter were interrupted by the rephrased question, and for a long moment, Daxton simply stood there and did not react. That had been the question he had been expecting, had prepared for, but now that it had been posed to him out loud, by Airey Flamsteed, no less, Daxton suddenly found that the reality of his mentally rehearsed conversation was not only totally different to what he had expected, but way out of his comfort zone. Not until it had actually been asked of him (rather than a hypothetical question in his head) did a new thought, a new answer he had not yet considered, suddenly spark in his mind. It threw him entirely.

Daxton looked away from Airey Flamsteed at once, frowning in thought as the new possibility set off hundreds of tiny sub-thoughts, which in turn set off hundreds more. He felt something tighten in his chest as the unexpected train of thought threatened to overwhelm him, and he very quickly pushed it all to the back of his mind. Looking back to the professor, focusing on his tie instead of looking anywhere near his face, Daxton fixed an unreadable expression onto his features and gave a shrug, followed by a shake of the head. No reason. Nothing.

Nothing. Nothing. It was nothing. Absolutely nothing and it did not matter at all and Daxton did not care because it was nothing.

The Ravenclaw gestured to the bubble that still surrounded his face, trying to non-verbally communicate that he wanted Airey Flamsteed to get rid of it now.

The response had not been what the astronomer had been expecting, but it was not surprising either. Although the man had thought that instead of a mere three words on the paper that diminished the purpose of the Ravenclaw's visit that he would instead read some kind of blunt reasoning about housemates being unsatisfactory or some other judgmental remark to make the switch desirable.

Perhaps it was better that the man keep that assumption in his mind rather than know the truth? Only Mr. Prince would be able to know that answer. Assuming he knew what the professor was thinking.

"If you're sure," he nodded, returning the paper to the young man and retrieving his wand to comply with the silent request. With a wave of his wand, the Bubble Head charm was removed and he returned his wand to his enchanted breast pocket.

Did that mean they were finished here? Seemed incredibly abrupt, even for Mr. Prince.

Having taken the paper back from Airey Flamsteed, Daxton busied himself with folding it up exactly so and slipping it back into his pocket while the Bubble Head Charm was removed. He knew it was not wise to look away while there was a wand pointed right at his face, but simply standing there waiting for the spell to be lifted felt just as wrong. By the time his hands were free to check his face again, the bubble had gone.

Which meant that there was no longer any reason for Daxton to stay. He had asked about the books, he had brought up another topic which had in turn set off an unanticipated and unwelcome spiral of thoughts, and now it was time to go.

He did not make any sort of goodbye gesture - though that was normal for Daxton - and besides heading directly for the door, he did not give any other indication that he was leaving. The way Daxton saw it, the physical act of leaving would be enough of a clue, and the issue of manners, of thank yous and goodbyes, did not even enter the equation. Even if they were something he usually paused to think about (and they were not), Daxton was far too busy focused on his own thoughts to grace the external world with what he would have considered pointless niceties.

Of course, the book he had taken from Airey Flamsteed's desk was still hidden up Daxton's shirt, and the act of walking towards the door had him distracted by thoughts of his earlier plan. He hesitated mid-step for only a fraction of a second, then simply continued making his way towards the exit of the room with even more purpose than before. He braced himself for any inevitable security measures that might strike once he passed the threshold, or potentially the professor himself mentioning the stolen text first, seeing as he already knew, and Daxton in turn knew that.
