The Observatory

Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. The huge telescope that former Hogwarts Astronomy professor, Professor Anteres, had put in years ago is still here and fully operable. Students are very welcome to try and use it. If you need a hand Professor Flamsteed is always somewhere close by and can lend you assistance. If the giant telescope is too much there is always smaller telescopes stored away in the cupboards around the room which you can borrow and use as you please as well as other astronomy objects.

Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.

Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Professor Flamsteed showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.

The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any teacher or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Professor Flamsteed isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean he isn't watching what is going on.

OOC: you do not HAVE to RP your character asking permission from Professor Flamsteed in his office before posting here after hours and may pretend that you received permission. Also, please keep in mind that while looking at the stars can be a romantic endeavor, that is not the purpose of the observatory and any mischief may result in points being deducted or detention.

Anyone? Just shoot me a VM

After having talked to Bastien about stars... well Dora found herself up in the Observatory that evening. She really did like the stars! Bundled up tightly she wandered about, looking at the charts, a small smile on her face.

Idly, she wondered why no one was up here. It was one of the coolest places at the school, after all!! And Admiral Starman totally was nice about letting people come up after hours. Lost in thought she continued to wander around, not quite ready to do the actual star gazing just yet.

Whenever something was bothering Haddie, she paced. Well, it was more of a wandering sort of pacing. At home, she would pace through the whole house, back and forth, upstairs and downstairs and back again. The issue with Hogwarts was there was a lot of castle to wander pace through. A lot of castle.

Naturally, Haddie found herself drawn to her favorite place to think. The Tower Patch, which was way, way, way too cold this time of a year. So instead, Haddie found herself wandering the Astronomy tower, aimlessly. She wandered into the observatory and paused. "Sorry, I didn't know anyone was in here." Oh, the other girl was Gryffindor. Haddie almost sighed with relief. Gryffindor her true house; her people. Always good for fun and distraction. "I'm Haddie," she said, introducing herself.

Okay... did she, for a BRIEF moment wish that was someone else's voice calling out? Yes. But only for a MOMENT, see? Turning toward the person speaking she smiled a little. "It's fine. I have permission to be up here after hours. Have you?" Not that she really cared at all, but it seemed the logical question to ask... and Ravenclaw kids liked logic, yes? Yes!

"Hi Haddie. I'm Dora." Seeee, she was just following the other girl's lead. MHM. Now she was done with the niceties, yeah? "Why are you up here this late? Do you like the stars? What's your favorite constellation?"

Haddie raised an eyebrow at the girl... a Gryffindor that was a stickler for rules? That didn't seem right. Maybe she was like Haddie was, placed in the wrong house by a brainless hat. The first year eagle that wasn't really an eagle shrugged and shook her head. "Didn't know we needed permission." Which was true. But then again, Haddie didn't really care now that she did know either. This was clear by the complete lack of concern on her face over having broken the rule.

"I, uh... huh." She paused, thinking for a moment. "No idea why I'm up here." Though she had been herself long enough to have a reasonably educated guess, which was, she was pacing. As obvious as that should be, it's not. Haddie only ever paced when she was so deep in thought over something that was bothering her that her body went on autopilot. As if the moment it realizes it was free of her will, her body tried to escape. Her body was a jerk sometimes. She shrugged, choosing to focus instead on the other questions asked. "Stars are alright I guess. Pretty and all..." Did she have a favorite constellation? No, not really. Except her mouth seemed to think otherwise. "Draco," it answered for her. Huh? Guess she did have one. Learn something knew everyday. "What's yours?"

This Gryffindor was a stickler for the rules when it concerned her Head of House, yes. She had an overwhelming urge to make the man LOVE her. She needed that kind of reassurance in her life, yes. EVERYONE HAD TO LIKE HER. Except Phillip Romalotti, of course. He didn't like her and she could not care less anymore. HMPH. "To be in the observatory after hours, yes, but I don't care either way. It's your behind on the line, not mine." Legit, she didn't care.

Stars are alright? Pretty and all? Was this girl FOR REAL? Ridiculous. "Yeah, real pretty. Burning balls of gas are always pretty." Dora SNORTED a bit. SNORTED! But this was not the time for telling the girl why she thought that was a dumb statement to have made. Nope, she would let it slide. "Cassiopeia is my favorite." Yep it was. Giving a small smile she waved the girl further inside. She could keep Dora company if she didn't say anything else too dumb. Mhm, she could.

"Cassiopeia?" Haddie took the wordless invite and made her way further into the Observatory until she was next to Dora, the celestial explorer. "Beautiful, but vain and arrogent. I prefer her daughter honestly. Andromeda." Though neither would really rate as her favorites. A horrible mother and the quintessential damsel in distress.... yeah, there were better. "If I had to choose between them, I mean." Although, she did love the name Andromeda. If she ever had a daughter, she'd name her Andromeda. Especially now that it wouldn't be out of place. Gotta love the Wizarding community.

"But then, I much prefer the myths that gave us the constellations." That was Haddie, closet Mythology buff. Not too many people knew that about her though. She rarely advertised the fact, but there were subtle hints her friends might have picked up on if they were paying attention. "Do you know the myth?"
