The Great Lake, also known as the Black Lake, is a large body of water located to the south of the castle. It is about half a mile in diameter and the Hogwarts plumbing network drains into it. Creatures have made it their home from Merpeople to Grindylows, with even Moaning Myrtle occasionally taking a swim.
The most notable is Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid. While busy with his kin, it is not uncommon to spot him or possibly receive a helping hand should you slip in after enough callings. Boats and life vests mainly reserved for the First year's entrance and Graduate's departure still sit by the dock. With Mr. McLeod's permission you'll be permitted to use them for a lovely afternoon of sailing.
There are also several trees by edge of the lake. A Beech tree in particular with a hollow hole inside is filled with books that have been left there over time. If you take one, be sure to replace one in exchange to keep the system alive.
"At least you're getting better and keeping with it though! That's the important part." Elora had always tried to look on the bright side of things. I mean, she had had a pretty great life and then this letter showed up and changed everything. So she had to be positive.
Elora thought about the mermaids. She had always wondered about the creatures in the lake but never really thought there were mermaids. She brought her thoughts back to dueling and spells. " Did you practice at all growing up? Or watch your parents?" One thing Elora wished she had had were her biological parents. Maybe then this whole witch thing wouldn't have been so life altering.
"I never practiced dueling before, no. My mom knows some dueling but my dad is a muggle. I don't think my mom has ever been in a battle, even though she's been in some tough situations. She's a journalist - I mean, she used to be a journalist and now she works for the Ministry."
Kitty was curious to know about Elora. "What about your parents? Do they duel?"

Elora's eyes widened. "Working at the Ministry sounds so exciting!" The thought of her parents dueling made Elora laugh.
"My parents are muggles. I was adopted before I could meet my biological parents. I can't imagine my parents dueling." Tucking her hair behind her hair, she continued, "My mom is a school teacher and my dad is an engineer. What about your parents? What does your mom do at the Ministry?"

"She works at the Department of International Magical Cooperation," replied Kitty with a smile. "She just got that job a few months ago and I'm not completely certain what it is that she does, but I know that right now she is helping to plan an international Quidditch tournament, at least that's what I think it is."
"Ooh I love Muggles. But isn't it hard to not tell everyone about magic?" Kitty cocked her head curiously as she asked this. "I wish I could tell people. Every time I'm in a place with Muggles people are always staring at me, and usually not in a good way."
Kitty temporarily switched the subject. "What is your favorite class here? I like then all a little bit except Divination."

"It was difficult at first, but I'm barely home now, so it's not too bad." Elora thought about her sisters and how much she missed them at this very moment. Her family were the only muggles that knew about her abilities. But she liked that. "I think my sisters and I look at as a secret only we know and kind of like that. Sure, we wish we could tell people, but it's kind of nice not having everyone know everything." Elora smiled.
She was sure she sounded crazy but afters years of social anxiety and suffering through thinking she was different, it was nice to have this all to herself." I love Arithmancy and Divination. Pretty much everything except Potions. It is not something I can do at all."

Kitty shrugged. "I guess it's cool to have a secret that no one else knows, but it annoys me that I could be arrested just for doing magic in front of someone. I don't have any Muggle friends, but what if someday I do and then how could I keep secrets from them?" But that was not something she had to worry about now, thankfully.
Elora was the second person Kitty talked to who liked Divination. Kitty was starting to wonder if maybe it wasn't such a bad subject after all and that she just hadn't had experience with it. "It must be terrible for you that we haven't had any Divination lessons this year. Hopefully next year we get a better teacher, one who is not trying to eat us! Honestly, I still get nightmares about that." She shuddered as she remembered the Hag and being dragged to the cauldron.

Pahahaha! Jogging. Paul nodded. "I...will try to get into it again. I can't go home at the end of term looking terrible after all these months--Milton won't love me anymore--" he was joking, of course. Milly was his FOREVER.
"I just don't know what's up with him, really. I don't remember him being THIS annoying back when I was here..but that was forever ago. It's just all so odd." He kept saying this word, odd. It was ALL so odd. But that's exactly what it was! ODD! "Ha! I hope he doesn't fire back with anything...too dangerous or...terrible for you, Julien."
So just pick up and place in the jar. Julien looked around and decided he'd start over to the left of Paul. Moving closer to the lake he looked down, "Haven't seen the squid this term, have you?" He wasn't sure that the thing even lived in the lake after all these years, but he often thought about the creatures in the lake that he use to watch as a child. Yes the compost, "Anything from my office that can go there will." He nodded as he bent down and picked up the slimy mess of the seaweed. He really wasn't a fan of picking it by hand, but he wouldn't argue with the expert.
Julien looked at him for a moment before chuckling. He wasn't one to comment on a males appearance, but he was sure Paul looked fine for his partner. "Well I usually try to go around seven if you are interested." He had Lili to look good for as well and children to keep up with, so he knew what wanting to be fit was like. Though his running was just as much for mental as it was for physical.
"He drove me crazy when I was a child. I couldn't stand the chaos that came with him. Surprised aren't you? I remember a professor teaching us that charm, so I just payed it forwards. I hope it helps the students get to study a little better without him around to bug them too much." He wasn't sure Peeves could do any worse to him then he already had. "I'm not sure the students are fond of my lessons though, so they might want Peeves to cause more issues with me." He chuckled knowing he was not a fan by some, but not caring either.
Kitty shrugged. "I guess it's cool to have a secret that no one else knows, but it annoys me that I could be arrested just for doing magic in front of someone. "Sometimes I wish I could tell people, but then that whole thought of being arrested crosses my mind. So I think twice." Elora laughed. " There was one time we at a playground, and I was pushing my sister on the swing. I may have accidentally levitated her...Thankfully, our parents were around and snapped me out of it.But that's the only real instance I can think of. Have you had any slip ups?"
Divination was definitely something Elora missed about Hogwarts... but at the same time..."I do miss it, but I really couldn't think of adding more to my schedule right now. Just trying to balance the few classes I have has been exhausting. I'm kind of a nerd and need to study a lot." Elora looked away. This was always the part where she lost friends... for being a nerd.

"That really scares me though, AND annoys me," said Kitty with a frown. "I'm not hurting anyone if I tell my friend that I can do magic, am I? It's not fair that I would be arrested just for not keeping secrets from friends. If I ever do become a reporter or a politician, then I'm going to talk to the Minister of Magic about it."
"Well, none of us could take Divination this year because of the Hag," explained Kitty. "But I totally get where you are coming from. I love studying too, it's just the physical activities that I'm not very fond of."
And speaking of studying. "Hey Elora, you know that Tapestry near our tower? Do you know the backstory to it?"
Angel was totally confused, she had no idea why but she had been so busy lately and that meant that she felt like she had totally ignored her friends, something that she thought was really bad. She looked around the lake and sighed soon she would be finishing this term and then she would only have one more year left, how had time flown so fast, it just wasn't fair at all.
Angel went over to the water edge and looked down, seriously she had changed so much since the first time she was here, she was trying to figure out why time was flying so much, but in the end she couldn't figure it out and she decided that she was going to enjoy the next year and a bit because after that she was going to be going to uni and then it would be off to explore plants.

They were in May and Leo could finally discard his coat for a lighter jacket when he headed out on the grounds for a stroll in the sun. Brushing a hand through his curls the librarian let his feet him lead him where they wanted. Leo had no goal. He just wanted an hour away from the castle. To clear his head and regain some energy for the afternoon that would undoubtedly be busy with students needing his assistance in some way.
Coming down to lake shore Leo spotted Angel Valentine standing a few meters away looking pensively down at the lake surface. On impulse Leo strolled over to stop a few meters way to not scare her. "Hello Angel, do you see anything interesting in the water?"

Angel was just staring down at the lake when suddenly someone spoke to her, she looked up and saw the librarian a few meters away from her. "Hi Mr, Librarian, Sir!" Angel had no idea why she still used that nickname for him, but she had found it cool when she was younger and it had stuck in her head.
Angel then turned back to look down at the lake, "I'm trying to see if there's any treasure in the lake." Angel lied, she didn't want to tell the Librarian her real reason for just staring at her reflection, trying to figure out where things had gone wrong in her young life. "There must be some treasure around here, surely a ship will have got lost in the lake at some point."

Leo stood and looked out over the lake when Angel acknowledged his presence and called him by that nickname she had used for him since first year. An irritating nickname in his opinion but he kept that to himself to not risk hurting Angel's feelings.
Turning his attention to Angel when she spoke Leo shrugged. "I doubt there is any treasure in the lake. If there were at some point in history then I bet the merpeople have taken a hold of it." Raising a brow he asked "Why the sudden interest in buried treasure Angel?" Was it just a smoke screen for something else that was bothering her?

Angel looked at the Librarian as he spoke about there being no treasure in the lake. "Surely in this massive lake there must be some and even if the merpeople have taken hold of it, we can get it right." she was totally not telling anyone the real reason why she was looking into the lake because well it was sad.
"I just...." she was trying to figure out something to say. "I just..." she was struggling now, come on brain do your magic and come up with something. "I just want to see what treasure looks like." she said the first thing that popped into her head.

Leo studied the shimmering lake water for a few moments before he focused his attention on Angel by raising a brow at her and asking. "Why the sudden interest in finding treasure all of a sudden? Has something happened?" Was it to throw him off what was really bothering her? Given that Leo didn't have any specific plans for his walk he decided to go to the bottom with what was clearly troubling Angel.
Pulling out his bag of honeydukes sweets from one of his jacket pockets Leo gestured with it towards a beech tree nearby and offered. "Let's go sit down over there and talk and share some candy. Treasure can look different to different people." He was not planning to talk eons about treasure. Leo was biding his time. Hopefully Angel would tell him what was wrong eventually.

Angel looked at the Librarian. "I just think it would be cool having loads of treasure." Angel lied, seriously why was she still near the Librarian, couldn't she just run and hide somewhere, she didn't want anyone knowing her problems. "EH..." Angel wasn't paying much attention. "No sir." Angel lied, there was something bothering her but she didn't want to talk about it.
Angel went and followed the Librarian, seriously why was he just so good and easy to talk to, this was just so hard. "Mr Kitridge." Angel said as she sat down. "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" Angel was starting to worry about her sisters, they never spend time together like they used to and it was making her feel sad.

Some people were better at lying than others. Angel was not one of them. Leo had resolved that the not so young anymore lioness had a problem. He was going to get to bottom of what that problem was since it clearly had nothing to do with treasure. How long Leo would be away from the library depended on how long Angel decide to keep talking about treasure instead of what was eating at her. "I see, well treasure can buy you many things, but it can't by you happiness." Leo pointed out with a meaningful look. So stop lying!
Taking a seat under the beach tree, resting his back against the tree-trunk Leo pulled out a sour green gummy bear from his bag of sweets. Plucking the bear into his mouth, he offered the bag of sweets to Angel as he responded. "Yes I do. I have two sisters. One is called Rose and the other is called Ariel. You've got two sisters too right? AJ and Aubrey?" Was it a sisterly conflict that was on Angel mind?

Angel saw the meaningful look that the Librarian was giving her and she knew that she wasn't fooling him with the talk about the treasure. "That's true Professor, but you could travel far, maybe even make a rocket and travel into space." Angel wasn't sure why she was saying that but it sounded cool at first but now it was sounded weird.
Angel took a gummy bear out of the bag of sweets that the Librarian offered her, he was so nice wasn't he and now he was answering her question, which was cool and odd because Angel had a feeling that he wouldn't have answered it. "Do you get to see them?" Angel was worried that when she left here and start exploring plants that she wouldn't be able to see them all that much which was just not cool.

Could they toss the treasure topic in the lake and talk about what was really bothering Angel? Leo wondered. He'd bet all the gummy bears in his bag of sweets that treasure was the last thing on Angel's troubled mind. For the sake of it Leo pointed out for hopefully the last time. "None of those things are fun if you don't do it together with someone, someone you can share the experience with." But that was just Leo's take on the matter. You could find happiness on your own but sharing it with a special someone was in his opinion a 1000 times better.
Normally he didn't talk about his family with the students but Leo felt like this was the right time to make an exception considering Angel's state of mind. Smiling he nodded "Yes, I do. I find time to see my sisters when I'm home from Hogwarts. When I'm away at work I exchange letters with them. Is that's worrying you? Not getting to see your siblings after you've graduated?"
