The Great Lake, also known as the Black Lake, is a large body of water located to the south of the castle. It is about half a mile in diameter and the Hogwarts plumbing network drains into it. Creatures have made it their home from Merpeople to Grindylows, with even Moaning Myrtle occasionally taking a swim.
The most notable is Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid. While busy with his kin, it is not uncommon to spot him or possibly receive a helping hand should you slip in after enough callings. Boats and life vests mainly reserved for the First year's entrance and Graduate's departure still sit by the dock. With Mr. McLeod's permission you'll be permitted to use them for a lovely afternoon of sailing.
There are also several trees by edge of the lake. A Beech tree in particular with a hollow hole inside is filled with books that have been left there over time. If you take one, be sure to replace one in exchange to keep the system alive.
It was mid-February. It was cold. Extremely cold, actually, so Paul, today, would not be dipping into the lake to forage. He'd have to sweep the lakeshore for what he needed for little Mr. Song's plants. One of them would benefit greatly from a seaweed compost, and he'd told the boy to meet him here soon. Bundled up, hopefully. At least it didn't look like snow today. Paul was in no mood to deal with that, not at ALL!
He had a couple of jars clinking on his on his waist, and he began to scan the sand and dirt for anything he could use in a compost.
BURRRR.
Paul shivered a bit. He didn't mind the cold if it was the good of some of his plants, though.

Song Jaemin's entire life was a tragedy. It was obvious from the slope of his shoulders as he walked down to the lake, visible even through the bundling inside a coat and a sweatshirt; his face was half-hidden in his scarf and his hair was hidden under a hat, but the visible part of his face was turned down toward the ground. His little gloved hands floated almost aimlessly by his sides, and there was absolutely no bouncing to be had. Today was the Saddest Day of His Life. The day Hogwarts had absolutely betrayed him beyond all reason and understanding.
The incident between his classes ending and his coming down to the lake had taken all of the pep out of him. But Jaemin wouldn't let that make him miss his meeting with the professor; the small boy had gone back to the dorm, taken some time to pout and be sad, and then had bundled himself up nice and warm to head outside. He wouldn't miss the meeting, but that didn't mean that he wouldn't be a little Sack of Sad for a good long while. Professor Myers probably couldn't even shake it out of him.
"Hi professor," he murmured as he approached the man. He did try his best to manage a smile behind the scarf, but the expression didn't reach his eyes which rendered it completely pointless.

Hi PROFESSOR? Was that all Paul Myers got from Jay?! JAY SONG? The student who normally BOUNCED when he saw the man....looked like a limp noodle today. Limp. Noodle.
"Hello, m'boy. It's wonderful to see you on this...cold, blistery day!" he smiled at Mr. Song. "Are you feeling okay? We could always forage another day if you are not feeling quite yourself," he didn't need the boy getting more sick if he was already feeling ill! Those nasty colds had been going around campus for a few weeks now! Paul had done his BEST not to catch up. Poor poor Charles Fluffington had a slight sniffle, though.

Was he feeling okay? Jaemin looked up at Professor Myers, the sadness still evident in his expression as his face came out of the scarf a bit more. He wasn't sick, if that was what Myers meant. Just... a very sad, sad little first year.
"Today's my birthday," he managed, voice coming out very small and soft. "And there were nifflers all over the kitchen when I went... but they all ran away and I didn't even get to pet one, professor. Not one."
He couldn't even bring himself to point out the fact that all he wanted in this world was a niffler for a pet. Despite Haddie's insistence that he not be sad, he was soooooo sad about the entire thing. One didn't just recover from a three year dream being shattered in a day, you know? He had been cheated.
"We can do the thing today though..." it was okay. Plants were his favourite distraction, after all. Far ahead of nifflers.

Oh goodness! Paul hadn't even KNOWN! What a terrible, horrible professor he was! "Oh gosh....Jay! I am so sorry--I had no idea! We must celebrate!" he smiled a little. "After we forage--celebration! You're twelve now, I take it?" he asked softly.
Hmm. Listening to Jay's story...hmm. "That sounds odd...why were there nifflers in the kitchens?" Did James know about this? "Maybe we can...walk over there later and see if..Professor Draper will let you pet one? Explain it's your birthday and whatnot..." and also inform the Creatures guy that his animals were loose? "Are you...sure there were nifflers?" It felt silly to ignore that...to collect seaweed from the lake???
Paul didn't feel like going over there yet though UGH

The little boy shook his head at the professor's apology, hands wrapping around the scarf over his chin and holding onto it to keep it down. It wasn't the professor's fault he hadn't known. Even if Jay had told him, there were so many students here that it was probably hard enough keeping names straight, much less birthdays.
"I didn't tell anyone until today..." it was his first birthday away from home, and it was a little... well, it felt weird. He loved his birthday, of course, but at Hogwarts there were no parents to celebrate with, and that made it strange. So he'd sorta just... ignored that it was coming, and then today he'd tried to make himself happy enough for everyone who wasn't there as well. He nodded when the professor mentioned his age. "Twelve. Four thousand and three hundred and eighty days."
In case he'd been wondering.
He didn't really know... how to explain the Nifflers. "They were taking all the silverware. They like shiny things." That was what they had been doing, but as to how they had gotten in, and where they had come from, and where they had gone? Jaemin had absolutely no idea. The idea that they were Professor Draper's hadn't crossed his mind, simply because there had been so many of them... while the man might have a few around and about, Jaemin couldn't imagine him having the horde that had been inside. Or not noticing that they were gone. "They were definitely nifflers, Professor. I like nifflers more than any other animal... we tried to catch one of them so I could keep it, but it escaped. They all ran away and disappeared."
They were smart nifflers, who didn't care about sad little first years who were having a birthday. It was a real shame. The boy looked in the direction in which he knew Professor Draper's stuff was all set up and built, biting down on his lip. Would he let Jaemin pet a niffler? It'd... probably make this birthday not awful.
"I didn't even know Professor Draper had nifflers..." Jaemin squatted down and, pulling one of his gloves off, picked up a bit of squishy seaweedy stuff that had washed up out of the water. "I hope he lets me hold one, if he does..."
They looked so soft and cute. It made him so much sadder, remembering how cute the one in the pot had been and how he hadn't even gotten to pet it because the others had tried to get Haddie's wand...

Paul frowned. "Why didn't you tell anyone? You could have had a little picnic party or..something, m'boy..." he said gently. He felt really badly...and also like..he needed to brighten Mr. Song's day just a little? "Twelve...wow. You're so close to being a teenager, you know," obviously, as if the boy didn't know how numbers worked, Myers.
Um, okay. That was just plain weird. "You...know nifflers aren't supposed to just..be inside the school right? I think we should.." he sighed. "I think we should skip the foraging for today, m'boy," he said softly, appreciating the small piece Jay had already managed to grab. "Come on--I'll go inform Draper--and we can ask about petting a niffler."
Paul's concern was probably apparent. "He might...we'll see. Let's hope...he has some there..." he glanced down at Jay. "You ready? I promise-we can forage this weekend, all right?"

"It's my first birthday where I'm not at home..." he shrugged lightly, turning the seaweed stuff over in his hand to look at it. "It feels weird... so I just didn't tell anyone."
And now it was an even sadder birthday, which probably made it a good thing he hadn't told people.
He was veeeeeery close to being a teenager, yes. Three hundred and sixty five days away from it. Which was also something he was not quite sure about, in the grand scheme of things. Being a teenager seemed like it would be cool, but also... some of them were weird. Like really weird. He'd seen soooooo many weird teenagers, both at home and at Hogwarts. He didn't want to be one of the weird ones. His obsession with plants and nifflers notwithstanding, Jaemin was sure he was fairly normal, and he wanted to stay that way.
They were going to skip foraging today, and do more niffler-related stuff. Jaemin nodded slowly, looking up at the professor, still holding the clump of seaweed in his hands. They could go to Draper, but he was totally taking this with him. He wasn't done looking at it.
"There were a whole bunch of them. It was like a niffler army." He started in the direction of Draper's setup, looking a bit less down with the prospect of petting a niffler put before him again. "They were running all over and taking all of the spoons and stuff..."
It would be awfully funny if they got to Draper's and there was a bunch of silverware being buried in his front yard. Jay could only hope.

Ahhh.
That made sense. He understood why the boy was sad...and he put a hand on Jay's shoulder. "Hey...we all care about you here, Jay. Even if you can't be home for your birthday..you have friends here who, I'm sure, would love to have celebrated your birthday and made you feel loved," he said gently.
"Now..let's...go..come on, m'boy--" Jay had started in that direction, and Paul briskly brushed past him, patting Mr. Song's head as he did so.

Brian had spent all morning thinking about what food to bring to the annual best friend picnic because it was his turn to host it this year and he was going to make sure that all the food was great. Not that anything the elves ever made wasn't great, but just... extra great. Which was why he'd spent the past half hour running around the kitchens gathering all her favourites. ALL OF THEM.
Because he was just the best friend ever, obviously.
And now he was there, early. Talk about miracles, he was hardly ever early for anything. But he was. So he'd just lay out the blanket and nom on a peach while waiting. She'd be here soon, right? She wouldn't forget this important event. Nope. He had total faith in his bestie.

She was a little late. Not too much. Mostly by just a few minutes. But it wasn't completely her fault. Some kids were hoging up the waffle makers in the kitchen and Tim finally threatened them and managed to take one from them. Quickly making her way to the lake, the blonde was grateful for putting her hair up in a bun today and not letting it loose as per usual. Bouncing on her tippy toes as she drew nearer to Brian; who was only a few feet away, Tim sang to herself and sat next to him. "Did I keep you waiting too long?" She asked, setting down her small basket and smiling down at him.
Hello friend.

Paul was foraging. Seaweed and the like, you know? Water. Plants. Salt. Was there salt in the lake? It was something Paul should have known, but didn't, and so he didn't dwell on his lack of knowledge there. He was a Ravenclaw, after all.
Once he had filled up one of his jaws with seaweed, he placed it on the grass next to his backpack and went back to wading, ankle-deep, in the lake. His shoes were neatly stacked next to his bag as well.
It was a nice day for foraging.

Julien needed some fresh air. The castle was stuffy this time of year and the germs were just visible. Maybe they weren't but to Julien he felt he could see the germs jumping through the air. The weather was changing back to warmer days and the students of course weren't going to dress appropriately out on the grounds. He wondered how many would miss his next lesson because they were ill at the healer.
Walking a bit further he noticed someone near the lake and stopped to watch for a moment. At first he didn't recognize the Herbologist but as he moved closer and he came into focus Julien realized he was mistaken on who it was and went closer.
"Hello, beautiful day out isn't it?" Glancing around he was a bit curious as to what was going on, "Are you harvesting already?" He thought harvesting was always in the fall to crops, but he wasn't fully sure what Paul was doing so it was a guess he had.

Paul didn't hear Julien approaching. He was busy wiggling his toes in the...sand? that coated the ground in the water. Squish squish. Hehe. It reminded him of the beach trips he had taken throughout his life...except with white, fluffy sand in clear blue oceans and not the murky lake that resides outside of the wonderful Hogwarts.
However eerie the lake may be, Paul found it quite peaceful on days when the surface resembled dark glass.
But the voice rang out at him, and Paul smiled as he turned to face the Charms Professor.
"Harvesting? No no--foraging. Seaweed, actually. I need a lot of it in my storage...for various things. Composts, mostly." He sighed. "It is pretty out today." It made him miss Milton ;__; "How are you doing Julien? Out for a stroll?" he smiled.

Watching the man with some curiosity Juline finally stopped in front of him and looked as he explained what he was doing. "I could help if you'd like." Why not, he was outside and he didn't have anything else going on at the moment. "Compost? Do you have a compost pile?" He could start sending stuff there, did he know that? Maybe he did and forgot. If that was the case he felt sort of ridiculous that he hadn't been sending his trash that could go there out all term.
Looking up at the clear sky he nodded, "It is. I'm glad to see the warmer weather coming back. My jogs are never as good when it's cold. I tend to start hibernating and then the lazy starts to kick in." He couldn't have that, no a man of his age still needed to work hard to stay in shape and stay healthy.
"I needed out of the castle, it always seems when the weather starts to change the colds and illness picks up. Too many students running around infecting each other in there for me." He did a small chuckle at how ridiculous that sounded, but it made perfect sense to him.

Hello friend.
Brian had taken to leaning against the trunk of a tree, conducting an imaginary orchestra playing various pieces from Swan Lake because he was just that bored. Also occasionally eating a bite of the peach. There were lots more in his basket anyway. But when the best friend person came, looking pretty good too, he bolted upright immediately and grinned at her.
"Eh, I lived." Grin. Hi bestie.
Are you going to sit down? " 'sides, more than makes up for the times I was late."

Paul nodded. "You can help if you like. I don't mind. The more the merrier!" he grinned and bent down to pluck some drifting seaweed from the water once more. "And yes, I do compost. I even taught a lesson....when was it..." last term? "Sometime in the past on composting. I think it's very important for humans to compost...recycling and whatnot, you know? Good for the Earth." He smiled broadly and tucked the seaweed away into the glass jar.
"At least you do jog," Paul smirked. "I...am on and off in my exercise endeavors. I'll want to get in shape, try to jog for a few months...and then just...yeah no. I am on that break right now," he shook his head and laughed lightly at himself.
Ahhh yes. Sick students. "I am sometimes glad I live out here...on the laaaand," he joked. Because he lived inside and not on the land at all. That hag, though...had been another story, heh. "I don't get sick nearly as often as you castle-dwellers do." And thank Merlin for that!
"I heard...Peeves has been giving you a rough time recently?" Another good thing about living out of the castle--he didn't have to encounter that poltergeist ever.

It was the first time in months that Kitty bothered putting on her makeup before going outside. Before it was too cold to walk around without a scarf, and her scarf always ruined her makeup - and besides, it was too cold to be hanging around outside anyway unless you were going back and forth to classes or to Hogsmeade.
But now the weather was getting warmer and Kitty wore white face paint over her already pale face, contrasting it with dark lips and eyeliner, with long black hair which she kept loose over her shoulders.
The Gothic girl kicked a small stone into the lake and started humming merrily to herself. She pulled her wand from her robes and pointed it at the Great Lake.

The Gothic girl kicked a small stone into the lake and started humming merrily to herself. She pulled her wand from her robes and pointed it at the Great Lake.
"Cantis!"
Elora walked along the shore of of lake, keeping her head down so as not to attract any attention to herself. Second year was hard and this whole "not too many friends" thing was getting old. But she still couldn't break out that confidence. All of a sudden, the lake began to sing...
She popped her head up and saw a fellow Eagle standing by the water. At first glance, she did not look like Elora's friends back home, but she decided it was time to branch out. She walked over to her, and with a quiet voice said, "Hello. I'm Elora."
While waiting for the girl's reply she nodded toward the lake."I wonder who did that. Seems silly, but entertaining at least." She flashed a kind smile at the girl.

Kitty turned to look at the second year Ravenclaw who had snuck up on her. She seemed nice. "Hi Elora. My name is Kitty DoGray Valentine, but you can call me Kitty. It's nice to meet you." She extended her ever so pale hand to Elora to shake.
There was some sort of singing sound coming from the lake, but it was muffled and it was unclear whether actual words were being said. It was possible that her spell had hit a fish or even a mermaid. Slowly however, the spell wore off. "I didn't think the spell would work, but it's my all time favorite spell. I tried using it in the dueling club against both of my opponents but they both dodged." She sighed. "I'm actually really eager to use Cantis on someone and I will eventually..." She twirled her wand in her fingers as she spoke, smiling a little slyly at Elora.

As the spell wore off, Elora's smile faded. The muffled music was kind of nice. Maybe that's a spell I can use in the future. she thought to herself. Elora shook Kitty's hand saying, "Nice to meet you! Dueling club?! I could never be in a duel. I don't think I could think that quickly." Elora laughed.
"Is that something you do often?" She smiled as she shoved her hands in her pockets. This whole making friends thing was getting easier. She just had to breathe and keep talking.

"Actually, I know EXACTLY what you mean," said Kitty in reply to Elora's statement on dueling. "I didn't even want to be in the dueling club, but my mom forced me too. At first I was really scared, and I lost both of my duels and even got my knee twisted in the second one. Butt was an accident and I'm getting better. Still, it's not really my thing." Makeup was her thing, and talking to friends.
She giggled when she was asked if Cantis was something she did often at the lake. "This was the first time I did it on an inanimate object, but it was funny wasn't it? I didn't think it was going to work, maybe I hit a mermaid who is now very angry." It was funny to imagine. "But I do that spell loads on myself."

"At least you're getting better and keeping with it though! That's the important part." Elora had always tried to look on the bright side of things. I mean, she had had a pretty great life and then this letter showed up and changed everything. So she had to be positive.
Elora thought about the mermaids. She had always wondered about the creatures in the lake but never really thought there were mermaids. She brought her thoughts back to dueling and spells. " Did you practice at all growing up? Or watch your parents?" One thing Elora wished she had had were her biological parents. Maybe then this whole witch thing wouldn't have been so life altering.

He smiled broadly and tucked the seaweed away into the glass jar.
Julien looked down, honestly he didn't know what he was doing, but it was a nice day out so he would help. "How do I go about getting this, just picking it with my hand or is there something special I need to be doing?" Plants weren't his thing, but they couldn't be that hard. He did have a compost, "I'll remember that and start using it more often. It's always good to help our environment." Yes he was aware of the need to help out. Not too much of a snob to do that sort of thing.
"You are more then welcome to join me any mornings for a jog if you like. I usually to about three to four miles if I have time. It's always are great way to wake the mind and body." Get it ready for the day was always something he strive for.
"Well yes I could see the benefit of that. I try to keep up with vitamins and potions to stay healthy. I don't need to have to be down with illness." He didn't want to deal with that. "Ah, yes he has been a bit more crazy these days it seems. I used him though for my last lesson. I'm hoping the students will use the charm to annoy him back for me." A rare grin did cross his lips like a boy that just conquered his first quidditch goal. The thought of the students zapping peeves with the charm brought joy to the man.

Paul laaaaaughed. "Just pick the seaweed up and put it in the jar--" he held out his glass jar. "I know some people don't like touching seaweed, though. It's slimy." Paul didn't mind. He'd had to deal with worse when it came to plant life. "I don't mind if all of you give me stuff to compost...or just...composted compost!" he laughed a little. "Whatever you can manage is fine."
Pahahaha! Jogging. Paul nodded. "I...will try to get into it again. I can't go home at the end of term looking terrible after all these months--Milton won't love me anymore--" he was joking, of course. Milly was his FOREVER.
"I just don't know what's up with him, really. I don't remember him being THIS annoying back when I was here..but that was forever ago. It's just all so odd." He kept saying this word, odd. It was ALL so odd. But that's exactly what it was! ODD! "Ha! I hope he doesn't fire back with anything...too dangerous or...terrible for you, Julien."
