The Great Lake, also known as the Black Lake, is a large body of water located to the south of the castle. It is about half a mile in diameter and the Hogwarts plumbing network drains into it. Creatures have made it their home from Merpeople to Grindylows, with even Moaning Myrtle occasionally taking a swim.
The most notable is Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid. While busy with his kin, it is not uncommon to spot him or possibly receive a helping hand should you slip in after enough callings. Boats and life vests mainly reserved for the First year's entrance and Graduate's departure still sit by the dock. With Mr. McLeod's permission you'll be permitted to use them for a lovely afternoon of sailing.
There are also several trees by edge of the lake. A Beech tree in particular with a hollow hole inside is filled with books that have been left there over time. If you take one, be sure to replace one in exchange to keep the system alive.

"Oh hey Tenacious." He brushed the dirt of his elbow and arm off on his jeans and flashed a smile at the guy.
"Yeah I'm good. Some start of term eh?"
So he's good? Tenacius looked at him for half a second more before roaring out ""AWESOME!" plus an exuberant slap pat on the shoulder. Alas, picking up on subtlety is a skillset he still has to learn. If he can.

He didn't hold her down for too long, like, he had his revenge but he didn't want her to drown or anything. So as she flailed, Zeke relinquished his arms from her back and distanced himself a bit. Last thing he needed was another dunking attempt from her. And again, he was wet, head to toe, most notably, his head. Shaking his hair out a little, Zeke wiped the droplets from his face before continuing in Amur's wake... leaving the lake.
Finally, they could---- huh?
Zeke caught his shirt with one hand, peering at it before looking down at himself. He was wet, his shirt was not... ergo, oh bother. He shrugged, slipping his shirt over his head and watching as it clung to parts of him. "You already said," he nodded. Was she blaming him for this??? Using his wand, he started drying it off. Not the most productive way of doing things, but they really did have to go. He still had to stop and grad his things, change over to his uniform and get over to the greenhouses. Doable, but he'd have preferred not to rush.
Grabbing his socks and shoes, Zeke stopped to ruffle Amur's hair before starting to jog back to the caste. "Catch you later!" he called.
Amur threw a glance under her arm back at Zeke as he responded to her words. Of COURSE he wouldn't think to dry himself off BEFORE he put on a shirt. Typical boy. Or was that just typical child behavior? Still, unfortunately, it had her stock still for a moment. Had the heat back in her cheeks.
She turned away quickly and gathered up her shoes and socks and wand. "Just wanted to remind you, in case the water between your ears muddled with your memory."
Straightening, Amur was the fortune of a rather unwelocme hair ruffle that left her with several knots and a rather wild look to match her expression of discontent at the action. That was to say, a squinty eye and a scowl. Still, it was Zeke and she couldn't stay mad at him for long, or for such a small thing.
"Not if I beat you there!" And with that, she bolted after him. Because, what was a better way of drying off than racing your friend back to Hogwarts?

Oh, but who is that?
The girl looked awfully familiar, that Jace simply must get to this person and see who it is. Catching a glimpse of her face, Jace grinned and gently tapped her shoulder. “Rachel-san? You did well in the Gobstone match. Congratulations.” He said tucking away his hands behind him. “Oh...what’s that you’ve got?” he asked, gesturing to her hands.
A stuffed toy?
Rachel stared out at the waters of the Great Lake. Should she go stand in the water at the edge? Just to let it splash over her feet would be a great feeling. But she also wondered if she was pushing her luck too far. "That's silly,'' she answered her own question in her head. "That old woman just likes scaring us.''
Mind made up, she was about to take a step towards the Lake when he felt a tap on her shoulder and heard the voice of Samurai Jace. Rachel turned to smile at him. "Thank you. You did eve better. Was that you first time playing, Jace?'' He certainly did not play as though it had been the first time but she thought she would ask anyway.
She looked down at the doll in her arms. "A doll,'' the girl said, holding it out to show him. "Isn't she beautiful? I found her on the Hogwarts express and so I'm trying to find its owner. Do you know anyone who lost a doll?"

See Tenacious was the sort of kid who would be responsible for parents banning children from sugar and carbonated beverages. Torrance was including in that batch too. He watched his buzz for a bit before shaking his head.
"I don't think we'll be able to pull that off again, on account of, I might be dead in a few days. Dax and I got into a whole bunch of trouble because of it."
That didn't mean they were going to roll over though. There were a lot of other ways that they could go about doing what they needed to do.
He rubbed his chin. "I think we could organise a balloon fight.....juuust not at the feast."

Now.
He ran a hand through his fluffy white hair and looked out at the lake. "None of our predictions are real. Miss Black was merely messing with us.." that cackle was piercing through his heart right now.
"NO one is a goat sniffer!" Paul raised his voice slightly. "You two should not be insulting each other! You're both upset by what you heard--how in the world is insulting each other going to make EITHER of you feel better?" he was trying to appeal to logic, here, kids. He put a hand on each of their shoulders. "David...Julia...Miss Black wasn't being serious. I promise. I'm not frightened..."
HE WAS OWLING MILTON ASASP. AHEM.
"And...I want you both to say something nice to each other. Come on, you can do it. It's not that hard." Just to get the positive vibes back and all.

...whatever he meant by it, it distracted her enough that all the big, gloopy tears in her eyes didn't actually fall. They reabsorbed in that weird, tingly way that tears do. But, she supposed she was willing to forgive David for telling her the Grim was real, if the professor promised them that none of the predictions were true.
"Because I bet she wouldn't have given me the Grim if Daaaavid hadn't been so rude to her." Julia stuck her tongue out at the boy.
...and now she had to say something nice to him. Did it have to be something nice about him, or just to him? She supposed it was the former, and grudgingly commented, "You have nice shoes."
Which she'd noticed while attempting to stomp on his foot.
...wait, so sniffing goats was cool now? Was that a thing? When had that become a thing? David was getting mixed signals from the professor here. Did HE sniff goats? No, Julia was the only one in their group who sniffed goats, CLEARLY, because she had brought it up. You all know the saying, the one about who smelled it... sniffed it? Er?
David shook his head and kicked another pebble. He didn't like seeing his favorite professor yell. It was weird. SUPER weird. Miss Black HAD BEEN MESSING WITH THEM then! He noted that the professor didn't comment on whether she was or was not hiding anything in her office tent, but let it go. For now. He looked up when the professor touched his shoulder again, most of his anger having dissipated in the last few seconds and with the professor's PROMISE that nothing bad was going to happen to them.
And plus Julia apologized first. So. He wins.
"Yeah yeah, whatever, it was a fake prediction so it doesn't even matter," he somewhat smirked at her. And yes, he DID have nice shoes. He was almost surprised she had noticed. Mum bought 'em. "Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu," David drew out the word while he thought of something worthwhile to say, ".....were pretty brave going into that tent." Even though he could tell she'd also been scared, she went in anyway. So that said something about her, HE SUPPOSED.

Since when was goat sniffer even an INSULT? Merlin, children. He cleared his throat a little. "Well...maybe she wouldn't have been so rude if we wouldn't have been rude first, yes...but that is in the past." He waved his hand as if to push some air out of the way, you know, to show that it was IN THE PAST. But he took a deeeeeep breath.
Aww.
Look at their love! Paul beamed. "See? That was very nice of you both." he nodded. "I will give you both 3 points for being very cooperative with me, and willing to push your disagreements aside and see the good in each other." He pat both their heads. "I'm proud of you both." More beaming from Paul.
"Now...are we all "cool" with each other, then?" he asked softly.

Jace, who would like to keep himself clean all the time, was actually surprised when he took the initiative to step up to the plate and play Gobstones. It wasn’t his first time, since it was introduced to him by his papa a few years ago...and people could tell that he didn’t like it one bit...especially when he lost to his dad, the ball squirting putrid substance on him. “No.” Jace grinned and shrugged. “I guess I got lucky. The Ravenclaws wouldn’t be able to win it without you though. You’re really good!” Jace beamed, nodding enthusiastically. “By the way, did you see Ravenclaw’s record for Gobstones? We haven’t championed since...18 years ago! You reckon we can snag the cup this time around?” Jace asked, sort of...implying that they should continue to play for the team. Their house could use more trophies, right?
The Ravenclaw had to lean back just a tad, when the doll was shown to him. It was the typical western, porcelain doll Rachel was holding. Not as attractive as the dolls he’d usually see during the Doll Festival back in Japan. “She is.” Jace lied. He was more attracted to the Hina Dolls since it looked more oriental. “No, but that’s odd.” The Ravenclaw said, scratching the back of his head as he examined the doll’s face. “Why would someone just lose it on the train? It looks expensive to be just...missing.” His mother has her own Hina doll, and he knows it to be very expensive since it is made of porcelain too. She’s very particular about it, that Jace found it rather silly. "Maybe we can make a poster about it, and...ask the other prefects to post it in their House's announcement boards? We can ask TiaMarie-san to help us!" Jace suggested. "We can also post one in the Student Bulletin Board? That way we'd be able to maximize our advertisment?"

The beaming grin suddenly fell "Dead? Why you sick?-- Oh. Right well yeah, every party has a party pooper." he shrugged. Such is the nature of the whiney. "Like what kinda trouble? Howlers? Parents meeting the Headmistress?" That can get kinda awkward he must admit. But wait-- "Who's Dax?"
"Well sure not at the feast, somewhere where theres a lot of water-- like here!" the curly top beamed a he swept his arm across the expanse of the lake "In fact, if it was here, we wouldn’t have to limit ourselves to water balloons, with all this much water we can do anything!"

Arista pulled her cardigan down on her shoulders and shrugged her shoulders oh well if he wanted to think that he could go on thinking that. "Whatever helps you sleep at night." She looked over her shoulders and laughed he was a weird one that was for sure!
She stepped back a bit more when he yelled, but was thwarted when his hands gripped her arms. Having no choice she walked a bit closer that way as to not hurt either of them. Sighing she blew some hair out of her face. What did he mean memories?! "What do you mean memories, is there really something special about today that I am not remembering!?" Well she was a terrible girlfriend, scratch that she was a terrible person. She pulled away right as his hand touched her cheek.
"Of course I'm not okay, your acting strange, I'm forgetting a very important date and you are acting weird! Wait I already said that!" She chuckled before realizing this was a serious time and there was no time for laughter.
Thomas nodded it did help him sleep at night, something about being ridiculously handsome just made him sleep like a baby. He grinned at Arista who was sending him a funny look. It was the truth she just needed to stop denying it.
He laughed still finding it funny that she wasn't getting it yet. "Nothing to big, just a little day that is on my top ten happiest memories." He grinned again if she thought she was getting it out of him that easy she had another thing coming. Plus this was kind of fun her getting all worked up, what wasn't fun is that she was taking it way to seriously. Guess he would just have to give in. Dang all the fun gone.
Once again he chuckled and said "Today is the day we met for the very first time. Silly right. Its not even our first date but today was a really fun day for me all those years ago. I mean you did push me into the lake and punched my brother." He laughed recalling how mad he had been at her for that until he found out why she did it. He stood up and looked over at the redhead who no doubt was furious at him for being so dramatic but could she blame him she always was. He learned it from the best. "Still think I'm acting weird."

It seemed as though both Ravenclaws were trying to be modest. Rachel liked this trait of both of them. "So are you, Jace. You should accept the complement.'' She smiled at her friend. "I played a bit during my Primary school years. It was really fun but I've never really thrown myself into it.'' She nodded. "Isn't it simply awful? That would be approximately the same time we last won the House Cup. If we all work hard, I think we can snag both Cups, don't you?'' What an exciting prospect this would be! Especially for dear Mr Kitridge. Rachel wanted to do this for him. He deserved it. "Are you going to play in the Championship match, Jace? I know I will be playing and trying my best again.''
Rachel bit her lower lip at the suspicion that seemed to be coming from her friend. "Possibly they didn't realise they had dropped it but I was also wondering why now one reported it missing. I certainly haven't heard anyone asking around about it.'' She listened with interest to his suggestions. "Mr Kitridge suggest flyers too! Putting them up on the student board and in the common rooms are a bonus. Thank you for the suggestion. Would you like to help me make some?''
Azura nodded as Trixie spoke. "I guess you are right, we will have to get used to accidents.. and it makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who is clumsy! She said with a warm smile at the other girl.. There were so many people here, there was bound to be someone more or equally as clumsy as she was!
She nodded a bit as she spoke about her dad.. "Ohh, that sounds.. mysterious?" She said with a warm smile before grinning.. "My Dad works for the ministry, in Accidents and Catastrophe's.. He usually goes out to clean up magical messes.." She thought at least! But with all the times he came home with something magical wrong with him because of work.. she was sure he did that!
Good thing her mother was a Healer!
Azura's purple eyes lit up.. "Yeah, let's go see if we can! She said with an excited nod!
"Oh I'm sure that there are plenty of clumsy people here." There were bound to be at least a couple more. Azura couldn't be the only one among so many students.
Trixie let out a little giggle. "Well I'm not sure I would call it mysterious." The stuff her dad invented was pretty much junk. And when Azura told her what her father did, she let out another laugh. "I bet your dad has had to go out and clean up one of my dad's messes. Probably more than once." Wouldn't be funny if their father's had actually met before. Trixie would not be surprised if they had. "I've lost count of how many times my dad has blown something up." At least it was never the house.
Grabbing hold of Azura's hand, Trixie tugged her new friend down to the water's edge. "How do we call it?"

Azura nodded solemly at her new friends words. They were wise. There HAD to be other clumsy people! "One of my friends claims he is clumsy, but I think I may be more of a klutz than he is!" She said with a bit of a laugh as she looked over at Trixie, oh sure Garreth CLAIMED he was clusmy, but until he fell over for no good reason.. She was still the Queen!
She giggled a bit. "Really? That would be pretty funny if he did! He does have to clean up a lot of messes, wizarding ones, muggles ones.. He met my mother when he went to St.Mungo's because a backfired curse literally had his insides in knots." She said with a happy smile. She loved her parents.. they were so cute!
Azure let herself be tugged down towards the shore and she knelt down a bit, and looked at the water.. "That's a good question.. I don't suppose moving our hands in the water would work." They probably needed food or something like that!
Its so relaxing.
Little Jessie plopped down her petite body on top of the grass.
She staring at the surface of the lake. Let the breeze touch her face. The tip of her pointed nose turned into bright red. So does her cheeks. But she didn't mind it.She likes being here.
Her hand raised to her buns and pulled out the ribbon. Freed her long wavy hair. Combed her locks with her finger slowly.
She remembered how her mum did the same. Always taking care of her. Make sure her hair always so smooth, her clothes always clean, and be save.
Jessie missed her mum so much.
Then her dad. Still unconscious in St Mungos. Jessie felt her eyes watery. She can't crying now.
No!
She isn't alone here. She has created many friends already. Met awesome professor who saved her from the tendril of Devil's Snare.
Have a boyfriend.
Jessie must be happy.
But still, she missed her parents. Maybe she'll owl them later. Sounds like nice idea.

He and his wand were going to get from the castle to the lake without any issues with his bag. It would stay out of puddles and mud (so would he) and he would have mastered another spell that kept defying him after only ten seconds. Ten seconds that had already happened more than six times, as the Ravenclaw now had mud skids on his knees from diving to save his bag from the floor.
TECHnically, it hadn't hit the floor yet. So he hadn't failed. Yet.
This was the last time he was going to try though. The last time he was going to even attempt this for today.

Grinning at the tall boy… man? … Slytherin …. who was jogging next to her, she laughed. ”Are we crazy going running twice in one day?” It was a Saturday… and they would likely be lazy… ish for the rest of the day - but still, she had run for almost two hours that morning so having just completed another run with Bastien was likely insane, but she had to keep up her training and it wasn’t even a drag when you had someone to run with. Especially when they were a good match for you… as much as she wouldn’t like to admit it.
”Wanna swim?” She asked him, although this time she didn’t have her bikini, it didn’t really matter. She would swim all the same in her underwear. As long as she could get into the water that was… but it was only October, and she had swam in it when it had been colder than this - so really Marsha wasn’t all that worried about the water. She simply had to convince Bastien to come with her… and usually that wasn’t a hard job.
He was almost as crazy as she was when it came to exercise.

Ah.
The little first year was just wandering around when she heard it. The splash. Something had fallen into the lake…turning she watched someone with their wand out and immediately walked over to the kid unaware of the sinking bag…”what are you doooing?” She asked happily.
“Did someone go swimming? Isn’t it a bit cold for swimming?” She asked again and leaned closer.
“are youuuuuu going swimming?” She asked because why else would he be at the great lake? Was he trying to talk to the squid she’d heard that it talked a lot…”I’m Melbourne.” She added at the end with a BIG grin.

"Crazy for never doing it before." He grinned at his running partner. Typically he didn't run more than in the morning because he was training for combat, and that was an intense six hour training that took up all his free time. But since he didn't have a tournament to train for, he could allow a little slack in his regime, yeah? More running wouldn't hurt him.
Swimming. That.... he wanted to? But last time he sort of got distracted, and it made him feel weird. Staring was rude. But impossible not to considering. "What are you gonna swim in?" He sprinted for the lake anyway. Even if they didn't swim, they could sit by the lake to rest their legs.

“are youuuuuu going swimming?” She asked because why else would he be at the great lake? Was he trying to talk to the squid she’d heard that it talked a lot…”I’m Melbourne.” She added at the end with a BIG grin.
Why did people come over to him when he least wanted it? It was hard enough being the person that had just lost his satchel to the lake, than to have people witness it and ask what he was doing. "Just...chilling." That was a lie, a total lie and it was written on his face. He was -- wait. HE HAD LOST HIS SATCHEL TO THE LAKE. What. Why hadn't he properly realised this?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. NOOOOOOOOOOO. NAOOOAOAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
"My satchel. MY SATCHELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL." Everything was in there.
And then without even acknowledging the question that came from the little girl, Rooney accio'd his satchel. And was hit in the face with a water plant.

It was getting to be chilly out now as November was creeping into the Grounds. Still though, it was fairly nice out today for Justin to park himself by one of the trees and watch over the Lake. Maybe take one of the books out to read while he was at it.
After settling down by one of the beech trees, Justin first checked on his mirror looking into it. As vain as it appeared he smiled at the sight before relaxing.

Pulling down the cap down over his ears, adjusting his coat and gloves Leo made his way out onto the grounds on this nice November day. A perfect day to get some fresh air and stretch his legs. The library could take care of itself for a few hours without him.
Taking the path down towards the lake Leo walked unhurriedly in a slow pace admiring the changes to the trees and grass that the fall was making in preparation for winter. He had almost past by all of the beech trees when he spotted his friend Justin sitting by one of the trees. Waving to him, Leo called over "Hey Justin!"
Leaving the path Leo trekked over to Justin with a warm smile pursing his lips. "Would you like some company?"

HELL NAH.
He did not look like he was just chilling…and then the yelling. HE WAS THE NOTEBOOK KID. YES that was how his face looked familiar. “Did you lose your satch—ew.” She made a face at the plant that was on Rooney’s face.
“You need help, I can swim for it” she offered and simply put down her bag and took her shoes off before grabbing her wand and running barefoot into the lake. Yep. She was doing it. Wading into the creeeeeepy waters for a stranger’s bag.
“ew…its slimy” she laughed and moved forward feeling something on her foot she kicked whatever it was up only to dislodge the satchel. “I found it!” Yep. She had it. Well…it had her foot.

This was very relaxing to Justin as he casually leaned against the base of the tree. In the mirror he looked, he could see his young daughter, sleeping soundly. He had smiled at the sight though to any onlooker it would appear as though the Groundskeeper was just as satisfied with his own look.
His head turned away at the sound of his name to see his fellow Librarian approaching. "Hey Leo." Company? "Sure," Scooting over to share his comfy space, "What brings you out here today?"

Ellery was busy. EXTREMELY busy. She was trying to see how many times she could flare her nostrils at a constant rate. The current rate was about 15 per minute, as she was counting in her head the seconds while counting on her fingers how many times she could do it. She only laster 73 seconds, and then she collapsed onto the lawn.
The October air was almost chilly, but still only a slight zephyr. It was nice. Olly would be joining her soon, and they could talk and catch up, and she could ask him about everything that was going on in his life.

Olly had had quite enough of girls thank you very much. He didn't want to have to see any more of them for a while. Except Ellery, of course. She was his sister so it was different. And he always wanted to spend time with her. So, he snuck out of the school all stealthy-like. Hiding behind whatever he could so nobody spotted him or followed him or anything. Luckily he did not have far to go.
Finally, he was by the lake. And there was Ellery, lying on the ground. Alright, that worked for Olly. He flopped down on the ground right next to her. "Hi Ells." He grinned. How long had it been since he'd seen her? Not very long. Like a day. Less than 24 hours probably. But any amount of time was too long. "How are you?"
She moving her gaze into the sky. Imagine about her future in Hogwarts.
Hope wandered out to the great lake. She hadn't been here yet. It was very relaxing. there were a few students around. she loved how care free everyone was around her. She spotted a girl about her age sitting by herself. She looked like she had something on her mind. Being Hope, she decided to introduce herself.
She walked over to the girl who, by the way, had amazing hair and gave her a smile. "Hi, I'm Hope. How are you? Is everything ok?" Hope had a little of her own problems going on. With her cousin and friend still missing. It was tearing her up inside, but she kept it at bay until she got to her dorm. There was where she let her emotions out.
