If you happen to try one of the doors near the end of the sixth floor corridor, you might just find yourself in a handsome (if not dusty and aged) office of a large size. The faint smell of crystallized pineapple seems to linger in the air of the room, which contains numerous side doors and nooks and crannies... all of which remain firmly locked.
Although the room is devoid of any office-like furniture, or any furniture at all, there is still an impressive, but faded, rug before the large fireplace and long mirror hanging over that to boot. The spare office is still a cool place to hang out, practice some wandwork, or do some light reading. Just don't linger too long; the office's famous owner was only fond of certain guests... and only as long as they didn't ask prying questions.
He always wanted an extendable ear? Now this was perfect. Her business plan was already going to boom wasn’t it? Thank you Cutty. She just grinned…well smirked at him. “I was thinking of practicing spells on the trunk? Shrinking it down and tucking it into a window” she nodded.
“…” what did she plan to do with the ears? “Well…I was thinking either sell them or plant them around the school and sell the information gained from them?” She offered with a nod.
Honesty could help…eitherway she needed all eyes and ears for that part of it. “Do you want to join me in that venture?...be like a private investigator or something?” She asked excited…she was too excited….”oh and the candy I’ll eat too much of it if I don’t stop and then I’ll need braces or something like that” she frowned. “and if I had braces I’d totally sound like an idiot if I tried to say ‘these aren’t the droids your looking for’”….it would probably be full of lisping and spitting with braces.
Matt soon got bored of the mirror because it seemed like it was just your regular old Muggle kind of mirror. Nothing special about it, so he turned around for good and forgot about it.
She was going to practise spells on the trunk. "Fair enough!" Matt didn't question anymore as her explanation was good enough for him. And she was going to maybe just maybe plant some extendable ears around the school??? "That sounds BRILLIANT!! And we would be able to tell what everyone was saying about everything and they wouldn't be able to hide anything from us!" The boy automatically included himself in the plans because it was only natural. She was planning to do it, he was there not doing anything more important soooo he might as well join in. Surely she wouldn't mind. "Yeah, we should do that!" Matt liked the second option better than the first one.
AHA, SEE. She asked him to join. "YEAH!" He answered, even though he was already considering himself in. Private investigator? Matt had never considered THAT, but it sounded fun! And sneaky enough, so he was IN!
Then she went on about the sweet and braces. The boy gave her a confused look. "They give you braces if you eat too many sweets?" And OHSWEETYODANEVERMINDTHAT. "WHAT did you just say???" Oh, Matt had heard, alright. He just needed to be sure. HE WAS JUST MAKING SURE HE HEARD RIGHT.

The boy unzipped his sweatshirt and squirmed out of it, dropping it in a little pile near the wall (and upsetting a bit more dust in the process) after retrieving his wand from the right sleeve. It seemed safer to keep it there than his pants pocket, considering... well he didn't want to break it, was all. Rubbing his nose, he looked back at the professor and nodded, holding up his wand.
"Ready!" he said, stepping closer so he could watch the professor carefully. He had to see everything so he could get it right!
Airey noticeably winced at the complete disregard for the sweatshirt - WHAT had it EVER done to you, young man?! - and couldn't help but march over to
abused garment and pluck it from the ground. Giving it a few firm pats with his hand, the astronomer neatly folded it up and set it down on a desk.
There. Now he could focus.
Minus 10 points to Slytherin for disrespecting clothing? The thought was tempting.
"Right. Well. To start the incantation is Derivo Gravitatem," he instructed, eyes tearing themselves away from the sweatshirt and to Mr. Song. "We'll get to the wand movement in just a moment. Just make sure that the incantation rolls off your tongue with relative ease before we do."

Probably a very good thing that Sniffler hadn't actually been in his pocket that day. He was pretty sure this particular professor might have died of horror if the small creature had presented itself while he was busy folding up the big snuggly sweatshirt. He spent a lot of time sleeping in the warm, dark pockets of Jaemin's clothing, which meant Jaemin had gotten used to just taking things off and letting them lay in places where the hedgehog wouldn't wake up and fall to his death while wandering about.
You got lucky today, Airey Flamsteed!
Derivo Gravitatem... the small boy's nose wrinkled a bit at the spell. So many syllables. Gave him more of a chance to get one in the wrong place. Still... it'd be better with practice, which was exactly what he did just then, pronouncing each syllable rather forcefully and not at all like he was trying to cast the spell, doing this instead to make himself remember it. "Derivo... Gravitatem. Derivo Gravitatem."
He repeated this a few times in a rather not-like-a-spell way before nodding to himself. It was there now, and engrained. He could work on saying it the right way now, and this he did as well. He'd been getting much better at making these words come out right, at least lately; it was like magic was a language, and it hovered somewhere in an awkward space between the two he already knew, clashing with them whenever they brushed up against one another.
"It isn't as hard as some other spells, to say," he murmured after repeating it a few times in the way the professor had said it.

Melbourne was grinning as she looked down at the trunk of wonders. Really, it was lucky she had grabbed the right trunk today and not the one filled with the flea collars and jars of well…fleas. “Yeah I want to have a well…head quarters for the terms to come” she grinned over to Matt….HAD HE JUST SAID WE? Mel’s grin broadened as she thought about how absolutely wonderful this could be.
They’d be the Gryffindor Wunderkinds. Well maybe not exactly that but they’d be absolutely unstoppable. “Exactly! I’m planning on…getting some of the other houses to attack them into their common rooms” she grinned over to him. “and imagine if we got them into Professor’s offices?” She practically bounced where she stood the possibilities…oh they would be able to do whatever they wanted…well almost.
So he was in on it? That was great. “well…I’m not sure my brother threatened me with them once?” She shrugged and then he was asking what she had said. The short brunette just tipped her head at him for a bit and assumed that he probably hadn’t heard her…”oh,…I just said these aren’t the droids your looking for…it’s from this film I watched over summer with my friend Tenacius” she nodded over to him. Yep.

Indeed. There would have been some unfortunate screaming and tumbling over the backs of chairs and desks. Hedgehogs were vicious creatures, you know?
"Thank you," he chuckled as he waved his wand to clean off nearby seat so his suit trousers wouldn't get dust and Merlin knew what else on them. "It does roll off the tongue surprisingly well despite the length. Not entirely a happy coincidence, I assure you." The astronomer did always tend to be long winded in almost every aspect of his life. "Wand movement is three slow counterclockwise circles above your head. Each time you should say the incantation, closing the circle on 'tem' each time."
Timing was rather important for this particular charm, but nothing catastrophic had ever happened during its experimental phases...so it was highly unlikely that anything too awful would happen if the Slytherin was off. Worst case gravity would increase and they would be smashed into the ground. Not smashed like bugs smashed, mind you. Just too much force being pushed down upon them that standing would be very difficult and, in extreme cases, impossible.

Ahhh. This was one of the spells with a very specific wand movement. Jaemin had come to learn that while some were general and could be cast with a mere flick, there were many that needed you to do something extremely specific for them to work. He supposed a flick was a specific wand movement as well... but it was much simpler than things like this, and he wondered how stuff like this was decided.
"How do the wand movements get decided?" he wondered aloud, looking at the professor. That was likely a very long conversation though, and right now he was busy learning a spell.
Three counterclockwise circles above his head. That meant... he had to hold his wand up over his head, right? Jaemin turned his wand in his hand a bit, making sure it felt comfortable, and then held his arm straight up. And we're off!
"Derivo Gravitatem," he said, extremely deliberate as he tried to time his circle with the spell. It went a little too fast though, and the 'tem' came out a long moment before the circle was completed. Jaemin frowned, and tried again. "Derivo Gravitatem!"
This one was just a half second too late. He frowned a little more and very pointedly went into the last one. The final 'Derivo Gravitatem' managed to land much closer to on time, though it was still off.
...and nothing seemed to have happened at all. Jaemin looked up at his wand, still in the air, and then at the professor. He did it wroooooooong. Pout.

Drumming his hands on his thighs, the astronomer smiled at the young man's inquiry. "I don't pretend to be an expert, although I did major in Experimental Magic at university along with Astronomy, so I can really only tell you about this specific wand movement," he began. "If you are truly interested. Bit of a long winded explanation, however." Although students ought to be used to that sort of thing from him by now seeing as they would soon be approaching the Christmas holidays. "A lot of it, in particular with this spell, is to help channel not only your magical energy, but to begin stimulating the very air you are about to influence with that energy...hence the sweeping and elaborate movements to try and touch as much as possible with the energies coming from your wand. The rest acts as an almost magical chemical reaction with each singular air molecule."
On the most basic level, that is.
"Fascinating field you know, Experimental Magic and Experimental Charms," he nodded, probably being a right awful distraction to the poor first year that just wanted to try out a bit of new magic. "You begin to notice a trend when studying wand movements. Combat spells have the trend of having wand movements that are quick and pointed." Just some more food for thought.
Oh, right. There was. Right.
Just to be sure, the astronomer removed a tennis ball (light and with extra fibers to catch the lingering bits of magic in the air should they be present) and tossed it into the air. The result was an expected one, giving that it was the young man's first attempt and a pretty advanced bit of magic. Especially someone the Slytherin's age.
"That's alright, Mr. Song," he applauded, tennis ball back in his own hand. "Can't expect everything to be perfect on the first go. Give it another try."
And this time he promised not to talk so much. Read: at all.

Jaemin listened with rapt attention as Flamsteed talked about why the wand movement was the way it was; it made sense, when explained. He didn't know much about molecules and stuff like that, so that part didn't really get through to him, but the rest stuck, and he looked at his wand questioningly. Was that how a lot of magic worked? Stimulating the air and molecules and stuff? Maybe later he'd bother the professor more about it, or the librarian... surely he'd have books and stuff about that, that Jaemin could read.
Why didn't Hogwarts have classes in Experimental Magic for eleven year olds to take? It sounded so cool. He would totally be in that class, making spells and wand movements and all that stuff. It would be GREAT.
"I wonder if I can learn that and Herbology at the same time," he murmured to himself, bouncing on the balls of his feet as he watched the tennis ball. His spell didn't work, obviously, so the tennis ball did exactly what tennis balls do. He was almost a little discouraged. Almost.
Then he remembered that it had taken him several tries to do the basic spells they'd learned in class so far this term, and he felt a little better. It'd take a little but he was sure he would get it! The small boy settled himself, a determined look crossing his face, and held up his wand again. Another try.
"Derivo Gravitatem." He said the spell with careful deliberation, and the circle was only ever so slightly off-timing again. Frowning a bit, Jaemin went right into the second one, repeating the spell. The timing fell exactly on this time, and he tried not to let that please him too much because he still had to go one more time!
One last repetition of the spell, and one last circle. This one was a repeat of the first, with the circle closing ever so slightly before the spell did. The boy blinked, then looked at the professor.
"Is there anything that's supposed to happen... if it works?" Like in Transfiguration, the Familiar spell with the blue glowing.

Alright. So he would have to talk a little then.
Although the astronomer did miss the comment about Herbology the boy had muttered under his breath, but would have advised the young man that it was possible especially if he were to look at the branch of experimental magic with emphasis on earth magic and those spells that held influence over flora. But that was not his particular area of expertise.
"That is looking much better, Mr. Song," he nodded approvingly. "Nothing like a jolt of light that you are accustomed to seeing. It's much more subtle, almost like a gentle mist made of white light."
So go on and give it another go.

A 'gentle mist made of white light'. The small boy frowned a little while nodding, because that had definitely not happened just now when he'd done it again. He wasn't sure if it was because of his timing, or because of the fact that he was so young and inexperienced... maybe both? Probably a combination of both, he decided silently. But the professor seemed satisfied with how he was working, so he wasn't terribly worried... the spell would come to him eventually! He could make it work.
"I'll try again," he said with determination, holding his wand up. No distractions this time... all of his focus on making the timing match up, because that was the first hurdle to overcome. He started the movement, speaking the spell softly but clearly; the first one ended right on time, with the spell and circle coming to completion at the same time. Yes, good. He started the second round... and he managed it again.
Just one moreee. The boy moved quickly on to the third circle and third intonation of the spell, eyes set on his wand as it moved so he could make sure the timing was spot on. He'd managed to make three circles right in a row! He was grinning almost immediately, but the grin faded a bit and he started squinting instead.
"...is that..." the vaguest hints of white light, possibly? Or were his eyes deceiving him?

The astronomer nodded his head to the Slytherin with a faint, but present, encouraging smile. Airey was beginning to think that they would not leave here today without the young man having at least moderate success. Mr. Song was practically secreting ambitious intent right now and it would only help him find that success with this advanced bit of magic.
He nodded his head with each completed circle traced in the air and refrained from making any comment about the timing being more spot on that previous attempts. No distractions, the professor knew how that went with practicing magic...even if he was often a distraction onto himself and needed to lock himself in a room with literally nothing in it as a student to achieve anything. The Room of Requirement had been an incredibly convenience to him - even if some would argue that the shape it had taken for the young astronut bore a striking resemblance to certain rooms in St. Mungo's.
Jumping to his feet, tennis ball in hand, Airey approached the Slytherin with a sideways grin. "Only one way to know for sure," he mused while holding the ball up high above them. Waiting for the traces of light to disappear, Airey released the ball and watched it fall. It wasn't a terribly significant change, but still a noticeable one. "Well done, Mr. Song," he nodded. "I'd say you reached approximately Venus level gravitational resistance there." Give or take a few meters per second.

Yep.
"So like, we'd listen to everything from here? Is that because there will be people from other houses joining us to listen to other people's conversations?" Was that why she wasn't setting that up in the Common Room? "Who'll join us??"
Into PROFESSORS' OFFICES! "I can help with that!" Matt wanted to go into professors' offices and mess them up leave them a little something. Hehehe. "Who'll be the first? Professor Flamsteed? Professor Myers? OH, PROFESSOR NEWT?? Imagine if we heard all of his conversations with his RAT??" HAHAHAHA! Creepy.
Ah, her brother. That was what brothers did, so Matt nodded and left it like that. Besides, there were more important things to discuss like what she had JUST SAID. "Yeah, I KNOW!! It's Star Wars and it's the best film EVER! I have a blaster! And a lightsaber! I'm Matt SOLO!"

Mungo's.

"I'd say you reached approximately Venus level gravitational resistance there." Give or take a few meters per second.
The tennis ball again. Jaemin stared at it, biting his lip a bit. Though he didn't realise it, he was holding in a biiiig breath... one he let out excitedly when the tennis ball didn't fall as quickly as it would normally. He had really done it!
He grinned up at the professor, bouncing on the tips of his toes and clutching his wand in both hands. "I did it!" He had done advanced magic. "This is so cooooool! It really worked!"
He jumped a bit, to test it. Just like the tennis ball had demonstrated, it wasn't anywhere near as good as the Professor had done... but there was still a change, and that was all that mattered. It was something. A starting point! And it was the first bit of advanced magic that he had succeeded in doing. The small Slytherin beamed, practically glowing with happiness.
"Is there a way to choose how much the gravity changes? Is there something I need to do differently to make it stronger, or does it just go on intent?" He could tooooooootally intend for it to be stronger! He had sooooo many questions, and he wanted answers to them aaaaaall, Professor. "Is there a specific spell to turn it off, too? Does it turn itself off after a certain period of time, or does it stay until someone fixes it? Does it only work in closed rooms, or can you do it outside too?"
"So like, we'd listen to everything from here? Is that because there will be people from other houses joining us to listen to other people's conversations?" Was that why she wasn't setting that up in the Common Room? "Who'll join us??"

When Matt asked about how things were going down she grinned. “I’ve already given a Slytherin guy some extendable ears because I’m planning on also selling them?” She grinned. “So yeah, we’d basically have to find people we trusted to et them into the areas we cant enter” she admitted.
“like…we could say put them in all of the dorms but there might be things we don’t want to hear” obliviously because what if she said something about people being attractive that would be bad…but that wasn’t important now, now was it? “But yeah…I was thinking of getting some into Hufflepuff as well and I’m sure that Haddie my Claw friend would be up for it” she grinned. “She’s basically a Gryffindor.”
“oh my gosh…” she grinned “that would be hilarious…you know we could always get them into all of the err Professor’s offices?” She offered with a grinned over to him, “I think maybe maybe we could hear things if we put things in their uh…seating areas and maybe if we put it in gifts?” She offered with a grin.
“What do you think Matt?” She asked because obviously he was her partner in this now. When he mentioned star wars she just grinned. “YOU’RE MATT SOLO?” She asked and beamed “I mean…ive heard a bit about you mainly that you are well…Tenacius and Tory’s roommate!” She beamed. “I’m Sam’s roommate…I also kind of grew up nextdoor to Ace…” looking at the ground for a bit she grumbled “sometimes he calls me Smelly?...cause it rhymes but I’m not trust me it was only one time cause I fell into this mud bogg in the woods off the path we made between our houses” she admitted with a grin. “But everyone else like called me Melon or Mel or Burny” she admitted with a grin.
“we should all get together over summer and have star wars marathons!” She beamed.

Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. EXCITED BOUNCE.
The astronomer grinned. There really wasn't much more that needed said on the subject, was there? Aside from an encouraging round of applause which the man was more than willing to offer. Clockwise, for the record.
"Mostly intent, although the speed at which you rate of rotation plays some influence as well. The slower you move the stronger the effect," he nodded. Meaning that there would appear to be less gravitational influence the slower the rotation, but not always. Intent would always trump the wand movement but together could help yield stronger results. "The spell requires an enclosed space and windows will add an element of difficultly but not impossible. Although I would recommend that you keep all windows shut."
Such curiosity. Airey greatly appreciated it.
"A simple Finite will remove the effects of the spell. Finite Incantatem will work as well."
Had he covered everything? It was hard to keep up with the machine gun like fashion of the Slytherin's question asking.

Aaaaaaall the answers. Jaemin listened very closely, nodding along with each answer given and unconsciously fidgeting a bit with pent up energy. So he couldn't do this outside to mess with gravity, just inside... and he'd have to do it in windowless rooms because that would make it easier to experiment with. There were specific ways he could make it work better than he already had. Good. These were all things Jaemin could work with or on, given time and opportunity. The small boy held up his wand and, after giving one last jump for good measure, murmured "finite" to make the gravity fix itself.
That was a spell he'd gotten good at, more recently. Heh.
"Are there spells to make the gravity... er, more?" More gravitier? How were you supposed to say something like that? Flamsteed would understand what he meant, right? The opposite of what he had just done, you knooooow? He gripped his wand a little tighter. "...what would happen if someone opened a window in a room after you had cast it?"

This was vital information.
"...can I try it again?"
"To simulate an increase in gravity?" the astronomer clarified, although it was a rhetorical one. "There is, but it can create catastrophic results when performed incorrectly." Surely the Slytherin could create a few lucrative images in his mind as to what those may be. The astronomer, on the other hand, had witnessed this first hand on a jar containing a single leech during his laboratory work at university.
He had not felt like eating lunch nor dinner that day.
"Quite the similar result one has when they poke at a soap bubble in the air. The outside influence of additional unaffected air molecules creates a unique set of vibrations that can, and the majority of the time does, break the enchantment."
He offered a firm nod of the head. "Try as many times as you would like, Mr. Song. Although..." he paused to check his sundial watch. "...as many times as you would like in the next 20 minutes. I do believe you have a lesson once this period is over and I will not be writing you a late notice." His tone was light, but also incredibly serious.

Yesss. Those were the words. Jaemin just hadn't known how to get them out the right way. He tilted his head as Professor Flamsteed spoke, frowning a little and scrunching his nose. That... yeah, that could totally go suuuuuper badly. He probably shouldn't experiment with that one. Squished Jaemin was not a good Jaemin.
He had sorta suspected that opening the window would break the spell... especially for him, considering he wasn't anywhere near as good as the professor was and wouldn't be for at least... a few years. Maybe. He nodded thoughtfully, looking around the room when Airey mentioned the time constraints.
"I just wanna make it work one more time today," he said happily, smiling. "And then I'll go. It... it takes me a little longer to get places than it does for other people sometimes."
He had very short legs, you know?
Still, he was sooooo ready to do it again. The small boy bounced himself into the center of the room and held his wand at the ready again. He just had to get the circles on the right timing, and it would be soooo much better this time.
"Derivo Gravitatem," he started, putting all the force in his little body into the spell and making sure the words and the circle matched up well. He repeated it again, stretching up on his toes as he closed the second circle. One more... he scrunched his nose up again and went right into the third circle and intonation.
The light looked a little stronger this time, or at least he thought it did!

"Of course," the professor nodded as he shifted a bit in his seat to get a little more comfortable for observational purposes. "Your dormitory and general Slytherin common room are also optimal locations for this spell." Dungeons and all that. "Just be careful not to do anything that will upset your Head of House or I'll never hear the end of it." Cecelia and he had a relationship not unlike Sir Nicholas and the Bloody Baron when he thought about things. Perhaps the only person among his colleagues left that had anything close to resembling friend status - outside of Meri-berry, of course.
"Just some food for though should you seek to practice outside of this room and without my supervision."
The first year seemed driven enough to be able to handle matters on his own. Nothing catastrophic had happened thus far and that was a pretty good indication of things.
"Here, you do the honors this time," he grinned as he leaned over a bit to offer the Slytherin a tennis ball.

Heels clicking along the stone floor, Nana quietly led young Kettleburn to the spare office. Her own felt... sterile, and too quiet for this rather sensitive conversation. It was... Frankly a little bewildering. The young girl was very clearly distressed over her snails (snails? What sort of pet was a snail, anyway, you couldn't play with a snail) and though Nana was as sympathetic as she could be, there was no getting around her lateness.
Opening the door into the spare office, Nana waved a hand for the young girl to step in. "Take a seat, miss Kettleburn." She simply said, clearing her throat. This ought to be fun.

Ohhhhh, he so hadn't thought about that. The professor was right... his common room was a nice, sealed in little area. The windows couldn't be opened or anything, either. He could sooooo have fun with this. But not enough fun to make Healer Murdoch upset! He wasn't about that life. He grinned.
"I won't do anything bad. I promise!" He didn't want to get Flamsteed in trouble with the other professors, because then he might not teach him more magic like this. That was reason enough to not get in trouble ever, honestly. He bounced on the tips of his toes, and reached for the tennis ball excitedly. "I hope it's more this time..."
He tossed the ball into the air and watched it float down. It wasn't as fast as it was the previous time, but it wasn't as slow as it would have been in the classroom either. He looked up at the professor expectantly. Where were they now, professor?!

It was with a dramatically listless flop to the floor that Char followed instructions and took a seat. Cross-legged on the dusty carpet, sending up a cloud of it that settled in her crazy, wind battered hair. That was what climbing out a tower window and shimmying around to the next window on a blustery, windy day did to you, but Char's hair was the least of her concerns right now.
Her HEART WAS BROKEN. Snoken! (Snail Broken!)

Reminding himself that that there was absolutely nothing wrong with encouraging curiosity - it was practically written in the job description of being a professor, after all - the astronomer tapped his nose in reply to the first year's promise. "Just be clear of your intent and the magic should resonate accordingly," he instructed softly. The boy had done well thus far, after all.
And look at that!
Grinning, the astronomy offered the young man two very enthusiastic thumbs up. "Stellar work, Mr. Song," he praised. "I know that it may not seem like much, but you have made great progress with this little bit of magic today."

If there was one thing Jaemin wasn't doing now, it was underestimating how awesome it was that he'd been able to do this spell at all. It was the best. He was over the moon about it, though not literally because his gravity wasn't reaching quite that far yet. SOMEDAY THOUGH. Someday he would be able to make literal moon gravity. Just you wait, Slytherin Common Room world!
Jaemin was positively beaming by now, especially when the professor praised him. He liked to be told he was doing well, even if he knew he was doing well, you know? It made it that much better. He bounced excitedly again, the change in the gravity making his feet take ever so slightly longer to return to the floor.
"Thank you for showing me how to do it, professor!" He was gonna practice it, very carefully and only in places it wouldn't disrupt people, so he could get better and better at it. And then he'd really have something to be super excited about. "When I get really good at it, can I come show you? And maybe you can tell me what place the gravity is like then?"
If he knew. He probably did know. He probably knew everything there was to know about every planet that had ever been discovered.
