The Eagles sit under a brand new navy and bronze banner representing their house. Their solid, shiny wooden table is nicely polished with all the place settings perfectly set. It was once said that the Hogwarts House Elves are the best in the world. It is up to your stomach to agree... but surely it will! Why wouldn't it like elf cooking?
If you're thirsty, there is also fresh pumpkin juice and water on the table, regardless of whether or not it is actually mealtime.

Rachel narrowed her eyes at Haddie; not in a bad way but in a mocking way that would make it seem as though it were bad and she disapproved of something. "Yes, you were.'' But Haddie was Haddie. There was no doubt in her that her friend would stop being herself so the most Rachel could do was try to keep her from getting in too much trouble. She was Haddie's keeper.
Rachel looked down at her own cupcake. "It's really fascinating,'' she told her friend. "Fred and George Weasley are really geniuses.'' She really had no inkling of the Canary cream's frosting modification. "I think you'll have to ask Professor Ichihara that because I have no knowledge there at all.'' Rachel fully supported Haddie's decision of wanting to be an Animagus and didn't see why the Professor could not have at least give Haddie more detailed theories on the topic if she didn't want to show her how to transform just yet.
"Apparently the cupcakes were laced with the Canary cream,'' the Eagle said to Mr Kitridge. "A prankster must have slipped them here.'' She stared around the Great Hall as though hoping the prankster would confess.
She looked back at her Head of House. She admired the look on his face when he spoke of his son and his wife. Or was it fiance? It was obvious he loved them both very much. "I am happy you got to see them. I imagine it is somewhat difficult to stay away from them.'' Just as it had been to stay away from her mommy and daddy.
Was Rachel a little disappointed? Yes, she was but she understood fully what Mr Kitridge was getting at. She simply nodded and followed his lead of eating in silence. For now, she would enjoy the company of her dear Head of House at the Ravenclaw table.
[B][I][FONT="Palatino Linotype"] Looking at the cupcake, Haddie couldn't say she wasn't tempted. But she shook her head, no. "I ate before I changed into a canary. Besides, I don't think I want to risk turning back into human mid-flight again right now, so definitely saving that for later." She didn't take her eyes off the cupcake though. The magic in them intrigued her greatly.
Haddie grinned at Mr. Kitridge, until she saw he was being serious. Then she sighed, shook her head and gave Rachel a look as if to say What are we going to do with him?"You should really lighten up, Mr. K. I was kidding." She decided then it would be her mission to find Kitridge a sense of humor.
Haddie picked up the cupcake and examined it closer for a moment. "I wonder how they work? It's clearly not basic transfiguration." Because if you transfigured someone into an animal, they had the mind of that animal, but she had kept her own mind as a canary. "I wonder if its related to animagus magic..." Well, besides being a part of transfiguration and everything. "Professor Ichihara said the training to be an animagi was dangerous... that's why she wouldn't train me this year, but the only dangerous part of becoming the canary was the landing. Do you think this sort of magic could be utilized to make animagus training safer?" It was something to look into perhaps.
So whomever was responsible had spiked the cupcakes with an extra high dose of canary cream. Interesting. Leo could understand Haddie's unwillingness to eat another one, and risk getting turned into a canary again. "You could bring the cupcake by Professor Newton. He likes to experiment and to figure out how things work and figuring out the dosage of canary cream used in the cupcakes to make you two fly around for an half hour would be right up his alley." Art could help Haddie out. Leo wasn't as interested in the magic at work to make the girls fly as he might have first appeared.
Sighing Leo laughed at Haddie's comment about lightening up and explained with light in his tone. "It's just how I'm wired. My default is serious. It's hard to joke and play around in the light of all the things that happens around here, but I can try." It was the best he could do. Many things required a serious approach.
Shaking his head he responded. "I doubt this canary transformation is related to animagus magic but you'd have to ask Professor Ichiara to get a certain answer." Nodding Leo affirmed. "Animagi training is dangerous and very advanced transfiguration and Professor Ichiara did right in denying your wishes to be trained. Normally animagus training is only offered to 3rd year students and up." And then it was offered to those that showed maturity and skill. Haddie had ways to go yet at least when it came to her own maturity. Her transfiguration skills Leo knew little about.

Rachel confirmed what Leo had already figured out. Eating the cupcakes was what had made the girls transform into canaries for a while. From his point of view it was Haddies fate currently to get herself in trouble and for Rachel to save her or at least smooth things over. It was just the nature of their friendship. He wondered idly if Haddie would do the same for Rachel if the situation ever occurred?
Sipping on his tea Leo smiled. "It was nice to see them," Nodding he affirmed. "Yes on some days it's harder than on others to be away from Prof Cassie and my son, but imagine it's the same for you too. Don't you get homesick and miss your parents at times?" He had certainly had times in his years at Hogwarts when he sent more than one letter home a week because he had ached for home and had wished that his parents could come into the dorm and give him a hug.
Eating up the last of his toast and finishing his yoghurt he asked "So with the year sprinting towards summer, have you gotten fond of any subjects yet? Or found any that are difficult?" Leo wasn't going to say hated. It was a too strong word and Rachel had just begun her magical education.
"Animagi training is dangerous and very advanced transfiguration and Professor Ichiara did right in denying your wishes to be trained."
The young witch's eyes narrowed at Mr. Kitridge. Her jaw clenched. She stood up dramatically, swung her legs over the bench, narrowed her eyes once more at Kitridge and stormed out with a Hmfph!
Three seconds later, she stormed back, grabbed the cupcake she wanted to save for later and stormed out again with a repeat Hmfph!

She tried to give Haddie a warning look but before she knew what was happening, Haddie had huffed off. Rachel watched her go and then watched her come back to snatch a cupcake. "I am so sorry for her behaviour, Mr Kitridge,'' the dark haired eagle said with a sigh. "Haddie really wants to learn to be an Animagi and I agree with Professor Ichihara about not wanting to teach her so early but Haddie doesn't understand.'' So many things could go wrong. "But I also think that the Professor could work in teaching her the theoretical aspect of it in the meanwhile.'' Rachel saw nothing wrong with this and it was just her opinion.

"So I understand perfectly how you feel.'' On the up side, they got to see their families sometimes. It was better than no times at all.
Rachel bobbed her head. "I love Herbology! Professor Myers is such a sweetheart and he makes the subject even more interesting. I found out that I enjoy Arithmancy very much too. It's just Potions that I am bad at. It makes me nervous about making mistakes that would ruin the brewing process so that I would have to start all over again.''

Today was her first day of being a FREE WOMAN. Free because after THREE WHOLE YEARS she was now single, and woman because... of other womanly reasons (for which she had been so SURE she was going to die that she wrote her LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, it was THAT horrifying). Flipping her long hair back, Charlotte skipped toward the Ravenclaw table, intending to have breakfast RIGHT THERE with her BFF4EVA, David Truebridge.
He wasn't here yet though, so Char claimed their usual spot and mentally ran through her last tragic conversation with Wesley, her EX-boyfriend. He was going to BEAUXBATONS now, even though his twin brother was staying HERE, and it was actually sort of a good excuse to break up because she had been thinking about it because he just WASN'T pulling his weight with their snail babies anymore, and when some of them died, the tragedy should have brought them closer together (she knew this from hearing adults talk about such things), but it just drove a BIG OL' WEDGE between them.
She wasn't COMPLETELY SURE why Wesley had looked so relieved about it all either, but Char just brushed it off as unimportant.
As she relived the conversation in her head, Char made all the various dramatic expressions to go along with it.
We just want different things, Wesley....
Sigh. It was SO HARD letting boys down easy.

Leo was raising his teacup to take a sip when Haddie stood up from the table dramatically, narrowed her eyes at him and stormed out of the Great Hall with the cupcake in hand. She was clearly angry and upset at him for agreeing with his colleague in the animagi matter. Leo sighed and took a sip of tea. Haddie had to learn patience. She'd get her chance to study animagi soon enough. Now she was too young.

You don't need to apologise for Haddie's behaviour. She has to do that herself." It was the only way that she'd learn. It was a part of growing up and maturing.
Nodding he agreed. "It's clear that Haddie really wants to learn to become an animagi but she needs to work on her patience and how she reacts in the face of letdowns." It was a part of life. You couldn't always get what you wanted right when you wanted it. Life didn't work like that. Thoughtfully Leo admitted. "It could be a compromise if Professor Ichiara would be willing to let Haddie learn the theoretical aspects of animagi, but that is something that Haddie has to take up with Professor Ichiara herself." Meaning it was not Rachel's place to do it. Haddie had to do it by herself. It was her wish and thus her fight.
Reaching out to pat Rachel on the arm he smiled "We're both doing all right and in just a few months we'll get to see our loved ones for the length of the summer break. So hang on to that." Leo was secretly counting down the days and months until he got to see Cassie and Jackson again.
Smile broadening slightly he said "I'm glad that you've found some favourite subjects even if it's a slightly odd combination of plants and numbers. Potions can be tricky sometimes. Just remember to take it slow and follow the recipe to the letter."
Finishing his breakfast, Leo said "It was nice to enjoy my breakfast in your company Rachel. I think you should be a good friend and go look for Haddie now and do something fun with her." He had work to get to in the library.

His priorities were on getting some food, because as his mum would say, he was growing like a weed. So food first, other stuff later, and/or he could stuff bread in his mouth while she talked.

"Daaavie!" Yesss everything was always instantly better when he was around, did he know? She slung her arm around his shoulder and reached for a slice of toast, half dragging him with her before settling back to munch on it. Thanks to the lasting lip gloss from aunt Ells, she didn't have to worry about messing up her latest make up efforts either, even if she was still getting Chloe to help her put it on.
She tried to make her munches sound ponderous and sad. At least ponderous and sad enough that Davie would oblige her and ask what was wrong so she could share her important news.
That was how it was supposed to go. She sighed to help him take the hint. Ask. ASSSSK MEEEEE. ASK MEEEE WHAT IS WRONGGG DAVIEEEEE TRUEBRIIIDGE.
"Oh." She said, trying not to sound too gleeful when he did. "Nothing much. I'm just.... living the single snum (snail mum) life."

"I know,'' Rachel said with a sigh of resignation. She loved Haddie but the other girl needed to realise when she was being rude or immature. Honestly, Rachel was not forcing Haddie to do this. No, she was confident her best friend would see it someday. She was confident of this.
Listening to Mr Kitridge, Rachel drew from his words that it was Haddie's battle to fight. An idea occured to her- perhaps she could help Haddie with the theory of Animagi. Haddie could then speak to Ichihara some more on the topic and maybe the Professor would be so impressed with her vast knowledge on the topic that she would finally agree to teach Haddie. Yes, this sounded like a plan and Rachel would talk it over with her friend later on. "I appreciate your thoughts, Mr Kitridge, I really do.''
How had she not thought of that? Her Head of house was right. They needed to hold on to the prospect of seeing their families in a few months again. "That will make thing very easy.'' Then she was giggling. "Odd combinations are not so bad.'' But she nodded. "I will certainly do so,'' she said, feeling a rush of gratitude towards the man for his words of encouragement.
The dark haired girl swallowed some pumpkin juice before standing up. "I think you're quite right. I will see you later, Mr Kitridge. Have a good day.'' With another smile, she gracefully departed her House table.

Penelope wandered into the great hall reading a charms book, not bothering to look up until a few flakes of snow fell on her book. What was that? She looked up, noticing that it was snowing throughout the great hall. Why was it snowing indoors? Although this was highly unusual, she had seen far stranger things at Hogwarts. Lately with the doll stuff and the painting in the window she had sensed that something was up. Something strange and unsettling was going on, but Penelope wasn't sure what exactly it was.
After putting her book away so as not to ruin it with snow, Penelope cast a warming charm around herself and continued to the Ravenclaw table in search of food. She brushed the snow off of a seat and sat down at the table. Putting her notebook on the table in front of her and opening it to a blank page, she took note of the snow in the great hall. Was it magical snow? Intentional? Caused by the magic of the castle itself? Something else? There were strange energies in the castle, and nobody really knew the full extent of the castle's secrets and what sort of magic was contained within its walls. Maybe the castle absorbed magical energy. The world was a wonderful place, full of wonders that could not always be fully understood. Penelope highly doubted that anyone would ever know all the secrets of Hogwarts. Anyway, food...
.... Were you hoping the snow would cease? alas, you're in for a quite a disappointment, for if anything...... It only appears to be falling ever-quicker and heavier as more and more time passes, without showing nary a hint of stopping....

Merlin, this snow was getting so bad that it reminded her of when she had been buried in snow under the Whomping Willow when she was a first year. Surely it couldn't get any worse in here than it had been outside the year of the chort induced blizzard. It would probably be good to find a professor who knew stuff about weather modification now. Oh look, there were professors up at the staff table. Would they be buried in snow if they didn't stop it? After putting away her notebook, shoving a few snacks in her pocket for later, and grabbing a sandwich, Penelope headed towards the staff table to see if anyone could help wit the snow situation. Naturally, the professors would already know about the snow because it's hard to miss an indoor snowstorm, and they were probably just as confused as Penelope.
Kitty skipped towards the entrance to the Great Hall merrily. She was going to ask for permission to bring her worms to Hogwarts next term later today, right after eating lunch. Seeing al the other pets that students had brought with them to the Potions lesson gave her confidence that the answer would be yes.
But Kitty's thoughts were interrupted as soon as she walked into the hall and found herself buffeted with snow.
"GAAAAAAAAHH!!!"
She lost her footing and stumbled headfirst into the snow.

The snum life? Did she mean the scum life? "Now, Charlotte," Davie looked up from selecting some fruit to add to his plate, certain that he was going to have to build his best friend up... but instead, he was distracted by the falling snowflakes.
And WOW were they falling. Davie hurriedly tucked his legs up on the bench, reaching out to grab his BFF's arm at the same time. "ARE YOU SEEING THIS, CHAR?!" It was winter all over again! HOW COOL WAS THIS? Pun intended! It was freezing in here!!!
"We should probably go get an adult... or get out of here, or see if this is isolated just to the Great Hall..." Davie leaned over and scooped up a handful of the snow, just to see if it was even REAL.

As advised by the professors, Penelope had returned to the Ravenclaw to announce their imminent departure from the great hall. Everyone needed to get out before the snow situation got worse. Even though they would be leaving the great hall, Penelope would make sure that all the Ravenclaws got something to eat. Penelope approached the end of the table where everyone who was looking her way would be able to see her and spoke loudly so everyone would be able to hear her voice. "Due to the heavy snow, all students will need to leave while the professors try to resolve the snow problem. Please finish eating quickly or grab some food that you can take with you." Couldn't let anyone go hungry. She would have to go make rounds at the other house tables to make sure they got the message.
"I'm coming Penny!" Kitty shouted to be heard over the snow. She was so cold that she didn't care if she ate or not. She could visit the kitchens later. Kitty stood up from the snow and made her way over to Penny so they could leave.
It's as if the sound of the Poltergeist's words of praise ignited something else, something different and yet oh-so-familiar. If you listen closely enough, over the sound of the hustle and bustle of the Great Hall, you might just hear...
