Art was standing behind his desk with Madame Curie perched on his left shoulder. He was organising all of the ingredients into an order which would allow his students to easily come to the desk when it was time and collect them. His white lab coat was on, and all of his personal equipment was set up ready to be used, to brew the potion today.
As it was nearing 10:30, he opened the door to allow the students to come in and get ready for class.
Ingredients
• 6 cups water
• 15 fresh Belladonna leaves
• 3 dried Fluxweed sprigs, roughly crushed in mortar and pestle (picked during a full moon, and dried over one week)
• 0.5mL Wormwood essence
• 2Tbsp Lacewing flies
• 1tsp honey
• 1tsp water
• 0.1mL Boomslang venom
• 1 crushed Unicorn Horn
• 1 measure of your animal
Method
1. Add 6 cups of water to you cauldron, and light a small flame. Simmer the water for 5 minutes to slowly heat to an appropriate temperature
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise
6. Measure, with a 1ml syringe, your Wormwood essence, and add to the cauldron.
7. Measure 0.1mL Boomslang venom in a different syringe and place to the side for a moment
8. Clean the mortar and pestle, add one unicorn horn, and crush it to a fine powder, then add the Boomslang venom. Mix together (it will not make a paste) and set aside for three minutes, then add to the cauldron.
9. Simmer the cauldron for three minutes, then stir three times, clockwise
10. Clean the mortar and pestle, and add two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey, and one teaspoon of water, and crush until it makes a smooth paste. Carefully add the paste to the cauldron

He added the tiny amount of the boomslang venom to the mortar, and mixed it with his wooden stirrer. “Now just tip this onto a clean dish and put to the side for at least three minutes, just to let the ingredients work together. What we want is for the boomslang venom’s SLOW characteristic to give the potion a long lasting duration. But as it is venom, we need to counteract this with the purifying characteristics of the unicorn horn. It takes away the venom but… but for some reason it leaves the slow acting characteristic.” He loved that. Putting it aside, he cleaned his mortar and pestle again.
“Now, with your clean mortar and pestle, add your two tablespoons of lacewing flies, and then one teaspoon each of water and honey.” He measured out his ingredients, and commenced mashing it all together. “We want to mash it to make a nice, smooth paste, and then we just add that to the cauldron.” He carefully added the paste to his cauldron, preventing splashback, and checked the timer. Three minutes had passed, and he added the mixture of boomslang venom and powdered unicorn horn to the cauldron.

Personally he thought the following instruction was a little unclear. If somebody didn't pay close attention to the listed ingredient then they would likely have stuffed up their work by adding 1ml of Wormwood essence instead of 0.5mls... like.. that was just dumb.
At least he knew what he was doing, consider it a side effect to having an Ace Potioneer as a father. He was set.
Using the tiny syringe, Zeke pulled back the plunger to extract the Wormwood essence and was careful to drip only the 0.5mls into his cauldron.

Leaving the decision about whether Esme would join her or not, Rachel made her way back to her station. She also needed to keep an eye on Haddie. So far her best friend seemed to be doing everything right but that was as far as Rachel had witnessed while she had not been working on her potion or had been over by Esme.
The first year took one of the syringes and carefully measured out half a millimeter of wormwood essence into it. Then she added it to the cauldron. She decided she would keep the syringe for her kit since the Professor didn't mind if they did. She left it on her desk in one corner for now. She would clean it later because right now, she needed to move on to the next step.
"Aahhhhhhhh," Art said, nodding slowly in understanding. He looked around the class, noticing all of the owls. He hadn't taken into consideration his students fears. "W-well you can uhh... well... WE can help you move to Miss. Watson's area or... or you can come and join me up the front. There's only Madame Curie up there." No birds.

Only two individual hairs needed for a rat or a cat, and for an owl, cut the tip of one feather, OR stroke your owl until a small feather separates from the owl (do NOT pluck the feather). Stir with wooden stirrer three times clockwise, and leave for six minutes to simmer.
13. Scoop out the liquid into your phials and discard the stewed ingredients.
14. Drink one 10ml phial of potion and let the potion set in until you start to sense your animal speaking to you.
"Right," Art said, up the front of the class, after having added the paste of lacewing flies, water and honey to his cauldron. "Next we need to be a bit patient and stir our potion slowly for three minutes, clockwise. There's no exact need to time each stir, but about... hmmm, oh it should take about 8 seconds per stir." He picked up his wooden stirrer, set his timer for three minutes and said "Go!" and commenced his own stirring, approximating the 8 seconds per stir, and making sure he went clockwise. All the while, he kept his eyes on the classroom, checking that everything was going okay. No explosions or tears.
When the timer went off, he took his stirrer out, placed it down, and put his timer back for ten minutes. "Now we wait ten minutes," he said with a chuckle. "A lot of waiting with this one I'm afraid. But... but this time we can uhh, we can start to-to clean up our things, the ingredients you've already used, if you have spare you can bring them back to the front, or clean your equipment or...or write some notes." He shrugged. Whatever they wanted to do. Art commenced a quick tidy up of his desk, making sure everything was organised so that his students knew where things went. "When you've done that, it's time to prepare some of your animal. Now, with our fury friends, the rats, cats, and ferrets, we only need two individual hairs. What I like to do is wet my hand a bit, and give Madame Curie a bit of a pet. Quite often, some stray hairs stick to it," he said, running his hand under the tap of water, shaking off the excess, and giving his dear a little pet. His hand came away with a few stray hairs, and he gathered two, and put them down on a dish, and washed his hands to get rid of the other hairs. "Now with the owls, you can either give them a stroke to see if any small feathers come away, or you can get some scissors or something and cut the tip of a feather off. Just the hairs, not the... the... stem," they didn't really need that bit. "And for our frogs and toads, we just get our metal stirrer, and with the flat section, we give them a VERY GENTLE stroke, from the top of their head to the bottom of their body, and we stir that into the cauldron. Once the ten minutes are done. Now... for our hedgehog... perhaps we can try to get a small sample of hairs from their belly?" he scratched his chin. They had hair on their belly, didn't they?
The timer went off after 10 minutes, and Art added the hair of Madame Curie to the cauldron. "Now we add our animal specimen, and stir three times, clockwise," which he did, then set the timer for another six minutes. "And we wait, six minutes. This is the last step before we bottle our potion. It's just going to simmer, concentrate a little. In, uhh, in the mean time, you can pack up everything else, besides a scooper and your phials." He started packing up what other things he had out, until everything was easily organised and ready to put away. Once the timer went off, he picked up his scooper and carefully spooned it into his phials. "Now we want to have approximately 10 millilitres of the potion each time we use it, so use your measuring tools to get a sample out. Don't scoop the stewed ingredients, we can throw those away. We just want the liquid. And then, once you're done, you can clean your cauldrons and we can... well, we can try our potions!" he said, excitedly.
OOC: That's the last bit of the potion! 2-3 posts. The remainder of the lesson will be your students trying out the potion, but that won't be for marks, just for fun and RPs. So stick around if you want to, otherwise thank you for coming! I'll be closing the class in about 48 hours (so feel free to do your catch up posts), but we're still around and will make some posts in the mean time <3

After waiting the three minutes and adding the mixture into her cauldron it needed to simmer. There seemed to be low wait times with this potion but the wait times where more consistent. One minutes here or three minutes there. It did add up but when it was broken down like this it really didn't seem all that bad.
Setting her timer yet again it was another waiting game.
One minute. Two minutes. And then finally three minutes passed, the buzz of her timer signalling so. With the use of her wooden spoon which she was sure to clean beforehand Hady slowly stirred the mixture in a clockwise motion three complete times.

Janelle picked up a fresh syringe and the Boomslang venom. She placed the syringe into the container and drew out the required .1ml of venom. She was getting pretty good at this because this time, she had measured accurately right away. As instructed, Janelle placed the syringe on a clean dish and moved it to the side.
Janelle had already cleaned her mortar and pestle, but she Scourgified it again anyway. Next, she was supposed to add one unicorn horn. When she read the directions, Janelle began to smile. Crush to a fine powder.......yes! She'd been hoping. Janelle got her one unicorn horn and placed it in the mortar. Then grabbing the pestle, she went to work. Crushing was so much fun and she crushed the horn to within an inch of its life. Her powder couldn't be any finer. To top things off, Janelle felt much more relaxed. She always did, after getting her good crush on. After checking her notes, it was time for the next step.

Rachel dearly hoped that Esme would come work at her station. She smiled in Professor Art's direction. "Thank you, Professor.'' Then she turned back to Esme. "I really want you to come work next to us but it's okay if you don't want to.'' Rachel wasn't going to force her friend into a decision.

The Eagle looked up from her notes she was making, a tiny frown playing on her face as she looked at Haddie. Why was she apologising now? Rachel had thought they were past this situation and every time David's name cropped up, she would become uncomfortable. She bore this nagging fear that Haddie might fight with her again as was quite keen their topics of conversation away from him. Resisting the urge to cast her eyes around the dungeon for the second year, she said, ''It's alright. What happened has happened.'' She smiled reassuringly before drawing her attention to Art as more instructions were given.
Rachel picked up her stirrer again and slowly began to stir the mixture in a clockwise direction, taking her time to make each stir last approximately eight seconds. It was painstaking work bust she focused all of her attention on it. Even the three minutes seemed to have dragged by but then finally, they were over. During the ten minutes they were to wait, the Eagle cleaned up her workstation, returning excess ingredients to her kit and added notes.
She also had time to acquire two hairs from her pygmy puff.

Janelle retrieved her syringe of Boomslang Venom and squirted the venom into her mortar. She mixed the venom and the unicorn horn powder together until they were well blended. Having a fine powder made that part easy. Now came the part that Janelle liked the least.......waiting. At least she only had to wait for three minutes this time. She checked her watch, not feeling the need to set the timer. Janelle didn't really have anything else to do at this point, so she just watched the clock.....at first. Boring.
To kill time, Janelle looked at her notes to see what she would be doing for the next few steps. It looked like she was in the home stretch of brewing this potion. She was really anxious to test it out. It would be so awesome if it actually worked. Although she could not imagine what kinds of things her Pygmy puff might be thinking. Then, time was up and Janelle added her mixture to the cauldron. This time though, she did set her watch's alarm for three minutes.

Haddie shook her head as she stirred. Her blonde locks, which was now much more soft and naturally wavy since Hirsch had to regrow her hair after she lost it all in the last duel --it was enough to forgive losing her dyed ends over-- bounced to and fro as she did. "No." Rachel, being the amazing friend she was, might be willing to let it go just like that, but she wasn't. It had been bothering Haddie for months, something she didn't realize until just now, when she apologized. "It's not alright."
Stirring done, Hadley sat down and turned over her minute glass for the first of ten times. She watched Asher lovingly for a bit before speaking again. "I was horrible to you, and you didn't deserve it. And I'm sorry..." She could see the tension in Rachel though, and frowned. That said more than her words could say. That pang of guilt settled in her stomach like a stone. "I'm such a hag," she added, arching her eyebrows at her friend as if daring her to disagree. She was also hoping to get a laugh, or at the very least a little lopsided grin from Rachel, break the tension. "Worse than a hag. I'm the worst...worstest!" Which everyone knew was worser than the worst. "So anyway," she sat up a little and turned her focus back on Asher and the timer. "Sorry for that. And... it's okay, you know? If you like him and want to be his friend. Or more than friends or something. And I won't be a horrid hag from now on. Promise."

Rachel blinked. Clearly Haddie was very upset over what she had done. The dark haired Eagle listened to her without saying a word though she cracked another smile at the comparison of the hag. "Oh no. No one can be as bad as the hag and definitely not you, Haddie.'' She was momentarily surprised at what was said next. "Thank you for that. You'll try to be his friend too?''

Rachel dropped the hairs into the cauldron then proceeded to stir three times clockwise yet again.
One stir.
Two stirs.
Three stirs.
That done, she left the mixture to simmer and to pass that time, Rachel packed away her remaining potions and ingredients as well as updated her notes. Once the six minutes had passed, she added the liquid to her phials. The stewed ingredients were thrown out. Pleased with herself, she cleaned out her cauldron as she tried to decide if she would take the potion now or another time.
Hadley opened her mouth unsure of how to reply. "I'll, uh..." Oh look, her ten minutes of simmer was up. Welcoming the distraction, Haddie wet her finger in the still full measuring cup and stroked Asher. The ferret wasn't exactly pleased at the impromptu bath, but he'd get over it. "...Not to, uh, call him a Dodo bird?" she suggested, peeling a few hairs from her finger and dropping them into the cauldron. The rest she wiped off on the side of her robes.
Hadley stirred the cauldron, three times, yet again, all the while considering Rachel's question earnestly. She shrugged as she removed the stirrer and flipped her minute glass. Six more minutes of waiting. Yippee! "No, I'll... I'll try." The Californian Eagle nodded, more to herself really. "I will," she promised. "But he has to try too." The first minute ran out, and Haddie quickly flipped it, almost as if she was glad for something else to focus on, even if just for a second. "And, uh... if we can't be friends, I'll bite my tongue or something. And give you two some space whenever you need it. Or something." The second minute ran out and Hads flipped the glass again. Just four more to go before she poisons herself. Yippee!

Glimpsing over at the instructions on her parchment Hady knew what came next. Grabbing up her wand she cast a simple 'scourgify' on both her mortar and the pestle. Things had to always be clean.
Into the mortar went to carefully measured tablespoons of Lacewing flies along with a teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of water. All measuring instruments used were all cleaned before she added each ingredient. Using the mortar Hady crushed up everything until a smooth paste was made. A gross looking mixture it was but it was as it should be.
All that was left for this step was adding the paste into her cauldron which she then did carefully. That done she went ahead and cleaned all her items once more while she had a moment to do so.

While Janelle waited for her second three minutes to elapse, she cleaned her mortar, pestle and syringes. Might as well be productive, Janelle thought. It was nice of the professor to let them keep the syringes if they wanted.
By the time her watch beeped, Janelle was finished with her cleaning and ready to go. She took her stirrer and stirred the potion in a clockwise direction. "One, two, three", she counted. Done.
Now that that part was finished, Janelle began to gather the materials that she needed for the next step. Lacewing flies, honey and her tablespoons. Her mortar and pestle were already clean, so she didn't need to do that. Janelle cleaned her measuring spoons and stirrer. Then she was all set.

After adding her fluxweed, the next step just included more waiting. More specifically, Tia needed to just let her potion simmer for three minutes. Which wasn't as bad as in the first step when she had to wait for five.
So Tia took the time to observe any changes to her potion and jot down a few notes of her own on brewing the potion. The difficulty of crushing fluxweed to the point where it wasn't finely crushed but JUST barely crushed. Basically everything she'd done thus far in the potion brewing which admittedly wasn't very much.
One minute passed. Then two. Then three. Almost a third of the way done.

Janelle measured out her two tablespoons of Lacewing flies and put them in her mortar. Then switching to her teaspoon, she filled it with honey. She poured that into the mortar as well. "OK, two tablespoons of lacewing flies and one teaspoon of honey", she said to herself. "Got it." Firing up her wand, she said, "Aguamenti". She only needed one teaspoon of water so the spell was quick. "Finite", Janelle said, ending the spell when the spoon was full.
Now that she had her last ingredient, Janelle added it to the other two. Then it was crushing time. Janelle picked up her pestle and had at it. She mashed and crushed the ingredients together, mixing them into a single mass. When she finally had the desired paste, she was done. Janelle scraped the paste into her potion and breathed a little sigh of relief. Then she cleaned all of her dirty equipment while she waited for further instructions.

Stirring time.
Three minutes worth.
Hadleigh reached for her wooden spoon and dipped it down into the contents of her cauldron. Slowly she began the process of stirring it all in a clockwise motion. When one was stirring something up three minutes seemed much longer and it had added a smal dull ache to her arm. Not that she would complain about it at all.
Removing her spoon and setting it aside a second she set her timer for ten minutes allowing the potion to simmer as it was needed. While that was being taken care of Hady grabbed her quill and checked off each thing she had already done.
It looked like she needed to hairs of Hagan's fur. Well alright then. Slipping from her chair she knelt down on the floor in front of her cats cage and unlatched the door reaching a hand inside. Gently she pet her furry friends head being rewarded with a purr. What she needed was some kitty fur however. A few more pets was enough to leave a few stray hairs on the palm of her hand. With a small grin she locked up the cage once more and returned to her desk with the furs in hand.
Finally the timer went off when the ten minutes were up and the snakette added the measure of fur into the cauldron, two hairs from Hagan.
Taking the wooden stirrer again she stirred the potion once, twice, three times clockwise before setting the timer again. This time for six minutes.

Kitty stirred the cauldron for three minutes clockwise. Her arms were starting to get tired from all the stirring by now, but she knew she was almost finished. When the three minutes had passed she sat back and waited for the ten minutes to pass. While she waited she opened the cage for Olaf. He/she jumped out into the table. Kitty carefully cupped her hands around him/her so that he didn't jump and away and lifted her/him.
The metal stirrer lay just to the side. The didn't idea of scraping Olaf with it made her uncomfortable. She had never handled toads before and she was worried she might accidentally hurt him/her.

When Professor Newton revealed the next set of instructions, Janelle groaned. More waiting. "I hate waiting", she said to no one in particular. Alas, complaining would get her nowhere. She copied down the steps and got back to work.
Janelle picked up her stirrer. This process was......interesting. They would have to stir in slow motion for three minutes. Yikes. Janelle put the stirrer into the potion and beeeeegaaaaan tooooooo stirrrrrrrr. Eight seconds per stir? That was almost painful. Around and around she stirred in a clockwise direction for what seemed like an eternity. It was amazing how long three minutes could seem when you were moving like the Six Million Dollar Man. Yeah, Janelle had a thing for old muggle TV shows. And what?
At long last, the three minutes were up. Thank Merlin. Janelle removed her stirrer and set it aside. The potion had to simmer for ten minutes. Janelle set her watch to notify her when the ten minutes were up. Then she set about cleaning up all remaining dirty equipment, plus the vials that she would use to store her potion. When ten minutes had passed, Kitty (with Olaf confined her left hand) picked up the metal stirrer with her right hand and very, very gently patted Olaf's head with it. He squirmed a little. Then she lowered again and pressed down just a little harder, and brought it down his back. "Sorry!" Yet it didn't look he was hurt. Kitty gently put him back inside his cage and stirred three times. Then she began to stir clockwise for three minutes, her hands still a little shaky from relief that nothing had gone wrong.

At the moment Rachel was being he lifeline and Esme appreciated it a lot. With a sigh she hugged her friend back partly out of gratitude and partly out of the need of something to hold on to.
As she pulled away she looked over to where Rachel was working with Haddie and the girl named Sam. It would be nice to be with friends but was that enough to make her feel secure? Even though THEY hadn't brought owls or any other type of bird didn't mean that OTHERS hadn't. In fact they HAD. Daring not to glance over to the creatures, she shook her head. Professor Newton's suggestion sounded safer to her; not only would she be further away from the birds but she'd also be near a Professor who could rescue her when and if the evil things escaped and launched an attack. Shaking her head at the thought, she tried to turn her attention back to the decision at hand.
"I really appreciate it and would love to sit with you but I think that I'd feel more secure at the front." Esme knew that Rachel wouldn't feel affronted by that. "Looking out for me really means a lot." She gave her friend a small smile. Rachel was one of her best friends and they had each other's backs.
By the time that she had moved her stuff up front Esme was really far behind on her potion but that didn't really bother her. She was feeling stressed out as it was because of the birds and didn't really care if she ended up failing this potion or staying after class (when the owls were gone).
Taking deep breaths, she went about writing the remaining steps into her notebook. Her hands were still shaking but at least she wasn't looking at birds anymore. That was a plus in her book and she would just have to try her best not to focus on them and instead on what she was trying to do with her potion.
With her shaky hand she went about measuring out the correct amount Wormwood essence with a syringe. Once it had been collected she added it to the cauldron.

ANIMAL WHISPERER POTION
Ingredients 6 cups water
15 fresh Belladonna leaves
3 dried Fluxweed sprigs, roughly crushed in mortar and pestle (picked during a full moon, and dried over one week)
0.5mL Wormwood essence
2Tbsp Lacewing flies
1tsp honey
1tsp water
0.1mL Boomslang venom
1 crushed Unicorn Horn
1 cup of Armadillo Bile
15g Ginger, crushed
1 Shrivelfig, scooped out seeds
1 measure of your animal
Method 1. Add 6 cups of water to you cauldron, and light a small flame. Simmer the water for 5 minutes to slowly heat to an appropriate temperature
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise
6. Measure, with a 1ml syringe, your Wormwood essence, and add to the cauldron.
7. Measure 0.1mL Boomslang venom in a different syringe and place to the side for a moment
8. Clean the mortar and pestle, add one unicorn horn, and crush it to a fine powder, then add the Boomslang venom. Mix together (it will not make a paste) and set aside for three minutes, then add to the cauldron.
9. Simmer the cauldron for three minutes, then stir three times, clockwise
10. Clean the mortar and pestle, and add two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey, and one teaspoon of water, and crush until it makes a smooth paste. Carefully add the paste to the cauldron
11. Stir slowly for three minutes, clockwise, and then leave the potion to simmer for ten minutes.
12. Add one measure of your animal’s fur or, if a toad, a gentle scraping from head, down the body with your metal stirrer, then stir three times into the cauldron. Only two individual hairs needed for a rat or a cat, and for an owl, cut the tip of one feather, OR stroke your owl until a small feather separates from the owl (do NOT pluck the feather). Stir with wooden stirrer three times clockwise, and leave for six minutes to simmer.
13. Scoop out the liquid into your phials and discard the stewed ingredients.
14. Drink one 10ml phial of potion and let the potion set in until you start to sense your animal speaking to you.
Ding! After the three minutes were up, Austin added his mixture to his cauldron. Now all he had to do was reset his Dragon Egg Timer to 3 minutes, and wait again. There were a lot of threes in this potion. Three stirs, three minutes. He wondered how significant that was. Numbers meant a lot in Potions. That's probably why he was so good at Arithmacy.
As he waited for his timer to go off again, he took the time to clean his stirrer and Mortar and Pestle. A quick "Scourgify" on each solved that problem. Now, A teaspoon and tablespoon were utensils he did have in his kit. When his mom went through the period of muggle baking, she realized how useful they were, and passed them on to him. His measurers were beautiful. Silver, with a fancy floral pattern. But now was no time to fawn over craftsmanship.
He added the two tablespoons of Lacewing flies (Tablespoons are the larger ones His mother's voice rang in his head). After that, he added the one teaspoon of honey and the one teaspoon of water, making sure to clean his spoon between measurements.
Ding!
Before he could get to crushing, his timer went off. "Three times clockwise... one... two... three..." Mumbling to himself again, he stirred his cauldron with a clean stirrer. Once that was done, he got to work on mixing his paste.

...Why couldn't they just clean the syringe and use it again?
Esme did not really get potions. She could brew them all right but the finer point always managed to allude her. Would something terrible happen to her if she didn't do everything correctly? Well, she already felt terrible enough as it was so she didn't really want to play with fire and tempt fate. This was just like the muggle chemistry classes when they did experiments to make things like goo and whatever else they got up to. It was hard for her to say since she had never gone to a muggle school being a half-blood and all...
Keeping her back turned to the owls made her feel antsy about a behind attack but she knew that Professor Newton would be on the lookout and stop anything as it happened. He HAD to since part of his job was making sure that the students were doing things correctly and not blowing things up or melting their cauldrons.
Shaking her head at that thought Esme measured out the Boomslang venom in another syringe and set it off to the side.

Okay, now she's ready to move on to the next step. After reading the next steps on her journal, Ava then grabbed the wooden stirrer and made sure that it was clean clean clean by using the scouring charm. Okay, now the wooden stirrer has been cleaned so.... Time to stir the potions, three times, clockwise direction.

Picking up her wand, Esme used Scourgify to clean both her mortar and pestle so that she could get to work on crushing the Unicorn horn.
It was a good thing that she knew now that no Unicorns had been harmed in the process because she could not work on a potion where an animal had been hurt or killed in the process. Dying of natural causes was one thing but there was no need to murder creatures in order to use them in a potion. Birds... she was less concerned about them; the fewer on the planet the better in her opinion. They were EVIL. Though she wouldn't use one in a potion if her life depended on it...
Dropping the horn into the mortar, she began to cruuuuuuush it into a powder. Cruuush. Cruuush. Cruuuush. Her arm was getting a bit of a workout and she was glad when she finally had a powder. Setting down the pestle, Esme grabbed the syringe that she had set aside previously and added the Boomslang venom. After mixing them together she set it aside and turned her attention on the clock, making sure not to look behind her no matter how paranoid she was feeling.
Three minutes.
Two minutes.
One minute.
As the time ran out, she gave a sigh of relief and added the Unicorn horn and Boomslang venom to the cauldron. She was getting closer to being finished this potion and away from the classroom. If only she had a timeturner and could get out of this place in a snap.

After a few minutes, Austin checked the consistency of his paste. It was smooth, like the professor wanted, so he figured that was enough mixing. He made sure to carefully add it to his cauldron, careful not to let anything splash. If there was one thing he learned, it was that letting the potion splash could cause one of two things. One: you could throw off the balance of your potion, and mess everything up. Or two: you could burn yourself. Both have happened to Austin in his five or so years of potion making, and neither were fun.
Once that was added, he took out his stirrer, cleaned it, set his timer for three minutes, and began stirring clockwise. The professor said there should be about 8 seconds in between each stir, so he went to counting. "One of Merlin's beard hair... Two of Merlin's beard hairs..." and on it went until he reached the number 8. When he reached the number eight, he reset to number one. On and on it went until the three minutes was up.

Looked like she needed to do some more waiting.
What was with this potion and the number three? There HAD to be some significance to it because it wouldn't pop up so many times by mere coincidence. If she wasn't feeling so on edge and scared at the moment she would probably asked the Professor about it. As it was she didn't care enough and just wanted to get this potion over with. Shame because she rather enjoyed the subject even if she wasn't exactly gifted at it. The class was fun on the most part and Professor Newton was nice even though he seemed rather shy. It was actually rather endearing.
Partly to help pass the time and partly because she felt that she should, Esme set about cleaning her wooden stirrer since she would need it shortly anyway... Look at her being a good student and everything.
Once the three minutes were (finally) up, she stirred the potion 1... 2... 3... times clockwise before cleaning the stirrer again. Might as well get that part out of the way since she'd be doing more stirring a bit later.

Once with the stirring, it's time to move on to the next step. Oh look, the tiny syringe! Didn't the muggle doctor used it to scare the kids? Like you know... "If you behave badly, you're gonna get a shot from the doctor!" Hehehe... Yeah, it was her own true story.
Was it already cleaned? Well, maybe she needed to clean it again once more using the scouring charm. And then, Ava used the tiny little syringe to measure the wormwood essence, exactly 0,5 ml just like the Professor had said. Then she dropped the essence to the cauldron. By the way, could she keep it? She could use them as a property for her upcoming Halloween costume maybe. Hehehe.
