Art was standing behind his desk with Madame Curie perched on his left shoulder. He was organising all of the ingredients into an order which would allow his students to easily come to the desk when it was time and collect them. His white lab coat was on, and all of his personal equipment was set up ready to be used, to brew the potion today.
As it was nearing 10:30, he opened the door to allow the students to come in and get ready for class.
Ingredients
• 6 cups water
• 15 fresh Belladonna leaves
• 3 dried Fluxweed sprigs, roughly crushed in mortar and pestle (picked during a full moon, and dried over one week)
• 0.5mL Wormwood essence
• 2Tbsp Lacewing flies
• 1tsp honey
• 1tsp water
• 0.1mL Boomslang venom
• 1 crushed Unicorn Horn
• 1 measure of your animal
Method
1. Add 6 cups of water to you cauldron, and light a small flame. Simmer the water for 5 minutes to slowly heat to an appropriate temperature
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise
6. Measure, with a 1ml syringe, your Wormwood essence, and add to the cauldron.
7. Measure 0.1mL Boomslang venom in a different syringe and place to the side for a moment
8. Clean the mortar and pestle, add one unicorn horn, and crush it to a fine powder, then add the Boomslang venom. Mix together (it will not make a paste) and set aside for three minutes, then add to the cauldron.
9. Simmer the cauldron for three minutes, then stir three times, clockwise
10. Clean the mortar and pestle, and add two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey, and one teaspoon of water, and crush until it makes a smooth paste. Carefully add the paste to the cauldron
OOC: Hi everyone, welcome to lesson two! I hope you remembered to bring your characters pets in their cages, and put on their lab coats, which are lining the wall, ready for class.
OOC: Class has officially began! Just pretend you've been here all along.
When he was satisfied that his owl was satisfied, and after the timer went off, he turned back to his cauldron. A quick "Scourgify" on his wooden stirrer cleaned it up for his potion. "One... Two... Three..." He did as he always did, and mumbled to himself, making sure the amount of stirs was correct. And yes, he made sure his stirs were clockwise, just like the instructions.
The one thing Austin didn't have in his 'kit of parts' was a syringe, and it was something he would have never thought to have. There were so many things he could learn from Professor Newton. With the syringe he grabbed earlier, he measured out 0.5 mL of the Wormwood essence. After a quick double check on his measurements, he added it to the cauldron.
The Ravenclaw took a second to glance at his owl. She was hooting happily in her cage, interested in what Austin was doing. It was weird to think that he could hear her thoughts. Or at least understand her. Athena was someone who had been in his life since day one of Hogwarts. She was always with him, and seemed to understand what he was feeling. Over the summer, when he was sitting on his roof, thinking about his mom, she would fly out of nowhere and land next to him. She didn't need some potion to understand that.

Crush crush crush..
Azura looked at her mortar and panted a bit more.. Close enough!
There were no big chunks in there at all and it looked pretty fine! She gave it a couple more crushes for good effect before emptying it into a separate container and then she added the boomslang venom!
She stirred it around and eyed it for a moment.. Sure enough it wasn't a paste!
She set her timer for three minutes and then glanced up at the board to see what the next step was!
Her hands were shaking as she picked up the other syringe. The closer she got to the Boomslang venom, the more they shook and Haddie had to put the syringe down and a take a few breaths before she could continue. Finally, when she felt ready, she picked up the syringe again. Her hands still shook but not nearly as bad. She could do this, she told herself. She'd get it right, and not kill herself with an overly venomous version of animal telepathy...
Right?
A strangled little panicked noise escaped Hadley as she drew the Boomslang venom into the syringe. 0.23ml... CARP! She emptied the syringe. That wasn't what she had been going for. She only meant to empty it a little, preferably 0.13ml... but instead all 0.23ml had escaped before she could react. Haddie drew more into the syringe. 0.16ml. Come on! Her hands were starting to shake a lot more now. Emptied. 0.04ml. 0.18ml... emptied. Haddie let out a small, frustrated sigh. Now that her hands were shaking a lot again, it was harder to draw just a pinch into the syringe than it had been. 0.3ml. 0.24ml. Emptied. 0.07ml. 0.13ml... Haddie paused. It was close enough right? Maybe as close as she was gonna get it to 0.1ml... but... she had an inkling that was just gonna get her poisoned.
Haddie emptied the syringe and set it down. She would take a minute or two to recompose herself before trying again.

A look at the list of steps that rounded out the latest grouping, Olivia noticed another wait of three minutes. This potion was chock full of them or just threes in general. No matter, she resumed her seat briefly to wait out the three minutes as she looked over the next step that would be what needed to be completed once the simmer was done. More with the mortar and pestle so the first year decided to be ahead of the game and clean everything ahead of time in prep.
“Scourgify” she cast on the mortar and pestle again. Bye bye any remnants of boomslang venom and crushed unicorn horn. “Scourgify!” she cast again on the stirrer even though that hadn’t been mentioned. And then when the timer was up for the three minutes, she gave the potion three more stirs clockwise.
After three minutes had passed by, Kitty pointed her wand at the cauldron. "Incendio!" The flame roared to life, becoming three times larger than she had intended to. Kitty gasped and jerked backwards in her chair, but within moments the flame had gone back to normal. Phew!
She looked at the other students and the professor in an embarrassed sort of way before moving Olaf's cage farther from the cauldron. "That was too close! Don't worry, you're safe here." Olaf simply stared at her with the same expression on his face. Soon she would get to know what he was thinking. Hopefully he hadn't been too scared by her accident.
Turning back to the potion, Kitty stirred three times clockwise just as the instructions said. She re-read the instructions to be certain and then Scourgified the Mortar and Pestle again.
One more step to go.

The Ravenclaw scribbled in his notebook, which by now, was almost as damaged as his previous book. It was holding up, but he was in need for another one after this year. There were just so many things to put in them. Like how the venomous properties of snake venom can be counteracted by mixing it with Unicorn horns. "Genius!" Something new was always around the corner, and he was ready to learn about it all.
Looking at the next steps, he grabbed a new syringe, and filled it with 0.1 mL of the venom. What would happen if you had more? Would you need more Unicorn Horn? Did you need one horn for ever mL? These were things he wanted to figure out. Although, messing with venom could be dangerous, especially when being administered to ones self. The last thing Austin wanted was to be poisoned... again.
Coming back to reality, he pulled over his Mortar and Pestle and wooden stirrer, and did a quick "Scourgify" on all three.

Well, now it seemed like Azura would have to do a lot of waiting.. Three minutes for the horn and venom to mix.. And then her potion would have to be simmered for three minutes!
So in the meantime She cleaned her mortar and pestles and made sure she had the rest of her ingredients in order!
When her timer went off. She tipped the horn/venom mixture into the cauldron and then set the timer for another three minutes..
Once that was done..ans she gave it three clockwise stirs.. It was onto the final step
Ahhhhh. So some of the stuff in the potion sorta... countered the poisonyness of it, a bit? Jaemin nodded slowly as the professor answered his question, blinking up at the man. He supposed stuff like this always came down to how much was involved... cause belladonna was used for other things too, but then it wasn't poisonous. It was weird, and something he would have to look up later to figure out more.
It had been five minutes now though, and he had all of his belladonna leaves, which meant that it was time for him to put them in the potion. Jaemin hummed to himself and scooped them up, leaning over the cauldron a bit to drop them in carefully. Once that was done, he had to move on to the next step! Which was... the fluxweed.
The small Slytherin pulled his mortar and pestle toward him before reaching for the fluxweed he'd gotten from the professor before. Three sprigs... he counted them of as he dropped them into the little bowl, then looked at the directions again. He just had to increase the surface area? That meant not reducing it to powder, which shouldn't be all that hard. The small boy picked up the pestle...
...aaaaaaaaand squish squish squish squish squiiiiiiish. He kinda liked this part! Jaemin continued to squish and squash the fluxweed happily, thoroughly enjoying himself.
Okay, she was ready to try again. Maybe. Hopefully. Haddie took another deep breath and picked up the syringe again. She held it to the Boomslang venom and eased the venom into the syringe. 0.16ml. She exhaled the breath she'd been holding as she emptied a bit of the venom out of the syringe. 0.11ml. Maybe just under that. It wasn't perfect, but it was going to have to do.
Setting the syringe aside, and glad for it, Haddie picked up her mortar and pestle and... sat down. Trying to get exactly 0.1ml of a very concentrated venom into the syringe had been a hell of a lot more nerve racking than she thought. And now that she'd gotten it as close as she could, she could literally feel all that tension and adrenaline drain out of her. She needed a minute.
Haddie felt a lot better now, if a bit exhausted, and picked up her mortar and pestle again. She aimed her wand at them, starting with the mortar. "Scourgify." Then the pestle. "Scourgify."

All right, seeing as her mortar and pestle were already clean. She tipped the lacewing flies into her mortar along with the appropriate amounts of honey and water..
She was going to have to drink flies later.. As well leaves, unicorn horn and boomslang venom..
Blech! While she loved potions.. Actually thinking about the ingredients made her gaga little..
Anyways.. She took her pestle and then started to crush and mix the flies, water and honey.. Until it was a smooth paste and then she carefully added it into her cauldron..
She cleaned out her mortar and pestle and then waited for the next set of instructions.
The worst thing was waiting. Jaemin looked into the mortar at the fluxweed, deciding that it was well and done enough, and picked up the little bowl to dump it into the cauldron. Now he had to let it simmer for three minutes again... he scrunched his nose and peered into the cauldron at the contents, wondering if it was supposed to start doing things soon, before picking up his wand again.
Since he was waiting, he could clean up his stuff. The diminutive Slytherin went about it, casting cleaning charms on all of the stuff he'd already used so it would be nice and clean to possibly be used again.

Janelle copied down the next set of instructions and took a moment to read them carefully. It was time to move on. As instructed, Janelle picked up a 1ml syringe. After moving the container of Wormwood Essence closer to her, she pushed the plunger down on her syringe. Then Janelle opened the container and put her syringe inside. Slowly she pulled up on the plunger, drawing the essence into the syringe. She removed it and checked to make sure that she had the right amount.
Noticing that she had just a bit too much Wormwood Essence, Janelle squirted a little back into the container. She checked again and saw that it was now at the .5ml line. Now that that was taken care of, Janelle squirted the essence into her potion. She set the syringe down and began to prepare for the next step.

She scooped up two tablespoons of Lacewing flies (which she found morbidly cool) and put them inside her cup. Then Kitty added a teaspoon of water and began crushing with her mortar. Her hands shook a little nervously as she did it, knowing that she was coming to the end of making the potion and that soon they would begin testing it. Hopefully it would be fun. Lastly she carefully, slowly added the paste to the cauldron.

So far this potion didn't seem like it'd be that much more challenging then anything else she'd brewed. There was still the problem of lack of connection, but that was surely only a minor problem and most if it's success would have to do with how well a potion brewer you were. After adding her belladonna leaves to the cauldron, Tia gathered three sprigs of dried fluxweed and stared for a minute or two at the instructions.
Crush them. But not too much? Just enough to increase their surface area? Well, wasn't somebody talking like a mathematician. Shaking her head, amused at the instructions, she crushed them roughly until they were crushed to an amount just larger than their original amount in her mortar.
Gently, the seventh year added the crushed fluxweed to her cauldron.

The mortar and pestle were clean. Next was the unicorn horn... where was that. She couldn't see it in her pile of ingredients. But she knew she had one. She saw it while picking the leaves off the sprigs. Of course her workstation was a bit messier now than it was then, but still... it's a freaking horn, how hard was it to spot?
Where are you unicorn horn? Come to me, unicorn horn. Be my friend. I'm a great friend. Very fun. Come on, unicorn horn, let's be swell friends... Ah!
Found it. She snatched up the horn before it could hide from her again, and then with a pang of guilty, put it in the mortar and began to crushing it. Sorry, unicorn horn. Apparently she wasn't a good friend after all.
Haddie's eyes flicked to Rachel as she crushed up the horn. The guilt intensified, mixed with some feeling in her gut that probably meant she'd touched on the truth there. That shutting out her best friend because she brought her crush to a fun game going on, when Haddie never told her the issue... yeah, she was a great friend, wasn't she? It was probably better the horn was getting crushed before it too learned how not a good friend she could be.
"Sorry," Haddie said to Rachel. She stopped crushing and examined the contents in the mortar. That was a fine powder right? It looked pretty fine. UGH! Why did directions have to be so vague. Fine was a relative term, people! Oh, well, it was fine. Definitely in the range of fine, so, moving on. "For everything, earlier." Hadley grabbed the syringe and nervously injected it onto the powdered unicorn horn. "You know, with...Davie, and all that." She began mixing them together.

This brewing process was getting long. Loooong. It already felt like they'd done 15 steps when they'd only done five. Ariadne guessed it was because she was so skeptical about what it would be like to hear the thoughts of her owl. They hadn't even known each other that long. On the other hand, though, what if she found our her owl really did like her? That would kind of be AWESOME.
She looked up when the professor started talking again and listened as he began working through the next step. Mmkay. That was her cue to get going again!
Ariadne assumed the syringe was already clean, but just in case, she did a quick re-cleaning. She drew 0.5 of the wormwood essence into her syringe then double checked her measurement. Yup. It was exactly 0.5! She tipped it over into cauldron and watched it work its way into the brew...
Once everything was clean, Austin set to mixing his ingredients. Step one was to add and crush the horn. It needed to be crushed into a fine powder, and he knew that took a while. So, while he crushed, he walked over to his owl in her cage.
She must have realized nothing was happening yet because she was glancing around at everyone. It was interesting to watch her watch other people. Her eyes were wide, and any time there was a new noise, her head turned right to it. How amazing would it be to read her thoughts. What was going through her mind? These were all things he wanted to know.
Looking into his mortar, he found that his horn was completely crushed. Pleased, he added his 0.1mL of Venom, and set his dragon egg timer to 3 minutes. Now all he had to do was wait.
Jaemin was practically bouncing in his seat by the time the three minutes was up. He was counting the seconds under his breath, fingers gripping the edge of the workstation; he wanted to see how this potion worked, so it needed to brew faster. He knew though, that trying to force his way through it would just mess it all up and probably end with another 'vague poison' situation... so he waited. And waited. AND WAITED.
Could time move any slower?
When it was finally time for it, Jaemin snatched up his wooden stirrer and set about the next step. THREE STIRS CLOCKWISE.
And one step closer to knowing how Sniffler really felt about his linty pockets.

Alright, three minutes were up! Time for the next step...stirring. Easy enough. Scarlett took her stirring rod and put it in her potion, and then stirred one, two, three times clockwise, as instructed.
Scarlett was enjoying this potion so far - mostly it was a lot of waiting for things to simmer. At least in the beginning. Kind of hard to mess THAT up!

Hadley watched as the last of the sand drained to the bottom for the third time in a row, and picked up the mortar, dumping the mixture into the cauldron. The feeling of dread lingered in her gut. Maybe she should have kept trying until she got exactly 0.1ml of Boomslang venom and no more...
It would be fine. Yeah. Totally fine. Haddie pulled out her wand, deciding not dwell on whether or not the extra 0.01ml of venom was gonna seal her doom or not. "Incendio!" The tiny puff of flame shot out of her wand like before and ignited the burner. She could definitely go bigger, but this was working and more importantly it wasn't setting her face, or the desk on fire. So, she was stickin' with it. Now to wait another three minutes.
Haddie flipped the minute glass over and once more went back to playing with Asher in the cage. What would his first thoughts to her be? More peanut butter, probably. And she'd have to explain to him that he was a ferret and couldn't have peanut butter, and they'd get into a huge argument and... okay, she was bored.

With her mortar and pestle already cleaned again, Olivia skipped right to adding the various given ingredients into it to make the paste that Professor Newton was demonstrating. First two tablespoons of Lacewing flies went in. Then one teaspoon of honey was added to that. And finally one teaspoon of water before it was ready to be mixed all together. The pestle in her grasp pounding and crushing the mixture until the Ravenclaw was satisfied that it looked enough like what they had been shown it was supposed to look like.
A smooth paste.
A paste that was carefully added into her cauldron like so. Which was the end of the current list of steps and ingredients to work with. So Olivia turned her attention back to the front of the classroom and awaited further instructions from the professor so they could move on or wrap it up.

So now she had to measure out half a millimeter - that was so SMALL - of wormwood essence. Scarlett took the syringe in her hand and made sure she knew exactly which little mark on the syringe marked the half millimeter mark. It was TEENY, but it could have been worse. She could have had a BIGGER syringe and that would have REALLY made things worse.
She took the wormwood essence and sucked it up into the syringe, then made small adjustments until she had the correct amount in there. Half a millimeter. Done. Now to add to the cauldron...she took it and aimed it right into her cauldron before pushing down on the plunger and adding it to the potion. Done with that step!

Finally the last of three minutes were up. Again. And it looked like this was the last three minutes she'd have to wait on. Which was a relief, because if Hadley had to have a pretend mental debate with her ferret about why he couldn't have peanut butter, for another three minutes, she was going to lose it. For real, yo.
Yes, Haddie was secretly really lame.
She grabbed the wooden stirrer thingy... was it actually called a stirrer? And stuck it into the cauldron. Three times, clockwise. Got it. One, two, four. Three sir. Three... Haddie snickered to herself and took the stirrer out. She was really starting to understand why it might be that she stunk at cooking/potioneering. Apparently her mind was everywhere when forced to wait before continuing to the next step and all that junk.

Once the three minutes were up, Brooklyn already had her stirrer cleaned and ready to slide into the cauldron. She wasn’t about to take any longer than she had to, and besides, it hadn’t taken three minutes to write the new steps of the potion down. She’d had to find something to do for the rest of the time, and Scourgifying the next few tools she was going to need seemed like as good an idea as any. One, two, three. She stirred the contents of her cauldron, and then set things aside for the moment. It was time to check to see what was next. She was planning on keeping the tools, no matter what. They’d been given to her, and she never knew when a tiny syringe might come in useful.
Gathering up a syringe, she cleaned it quickly before measuring out half a milliliter of wormwood essence, which got added to the potion in her cauldron. Afterward, she used the second syringe to measure out the tiny amount of boomslang venom. 0.1 milliliters barely even showed up in the syringe, as far as she was concerned, but that was what the potion called for. All she could do was set it aside, waiting for the next step.

Okay, clean the mortar and pestle again. "Scourgify and... scourgify. Check." Next up is... Lacewing flies. Ew. The young Californian made a face as she scooped a tablespoon of flies and added them to the mortar. Then a second spoonful. Oh, honey. Much better. One teaspoon, and two teaspoons and a teaspoon of... water? Haddie looked at the teaspoon and decided it would be a bad idea to try and aguamenti the water onto the spoon.
So she would need a cup. Like that measuring cup over there. She had to lean across the workstation to reach it. Seriously, how did it even get over there? No matter. "Aguamenti!" No chances. Not this close to being finished, with possibly the first decent attempt at a potion she's done. "Finite!" The water stopped as it neared the top of the cup. Perfect. She didn't know what she was going to do with the water she didn't need, but it was perfect. Haddie dipped the teaspoon into the water and added it to her mortar. Then she went to mashing it all into a paste, refusing to look at it for a whole minute as she did. She wasn't really in the mood to watch fly guts spill out. Asher was apparently, his eyes never left the mortar. Such a boy.
There, that was pasty enough, don't you think, Asher? Of course he did. And now add it... carefully? To the cauldron. Why? Why carefully? And Carefully how? See, vague instructions were too vague. What if she didn't add it carefully enough, would the potion turn into acid and melt her stomach or something? Would it explode? All these questions and more played out on Haddie's face.
She decided that adding it carefully meant holding it at arms length away from her and scraping it into the cauldron without actually looking at it. She scourgified her mortar and pestle again as soon as she was done, just in case it decided it wasn't lying around on the table carefully enough. You never know when fly guts were involved. Oh, that was the last step. So she was done then?
