Art was standing behind his desk with Madame Curie perched on his left shoulder. He was organising all of the ingredients into an order which would allow his students to easily come to the desk when it was time and collect them. His white lab coat was on, and all of his personal equipment was set up ready to be used, to brew the potion today.
As it was nearing 10:30, he opened the door to allow the students to come in and get ready for class.
Ingredients
• 6 cups water
• 15 fresh Belladonna leaves
• 3 dried Fluxweed sprigs, roughly crushed in mortar and pestle (picked during a full moon, and dried over one week)
• 0.5mL Wormwood essence
• 2Tbsp Lacewing flies
• 1tsp honey
• 1tsp water
• 0.1mL Boomslang venom
• 1 crushed Unicorn Horn
• 1 measure of your animal
Method
1. Add 6 cups of water to you cauldron, and light a small flame. Simmer the water for 5 minutes to slowly heat to an appropriate temperature
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise
6. Measure, with a 1ml syringe, your Wormwood essence, and add to the cauldron.
7. Measure 0.1mL Boomslang venom in a different syringe and place to the side for a moment
8. Clean the mortar and pestle, add one unicorn horn, and crush it to a fine powder, then add the Boomslang venom. Mix together (it will not make a paste) and set aside for three minutes, then add to the cauldron.
9. Simmer the cauldron for three minutes, then stir three times, clockwise
10. Clean the mortar and pestle, and add two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey, and one teaspoon of water, and crush until it makes a smooth paste. Carefully add the paste to the cauldron

Esme could hear Rachel approaching, but didn't look up. She didn't want to be seen right now because she was crying. She hated people seeing her cry if she could help it. The only exception was her sister; Juno was the exception when it came to a lot of things. Instead of answering the question, she merely nodded. It was definitely the owls.
Of course she would have attracted the attention of Professor Newton. Esme should have realized that but it didn't really matter. Wiping her eyes, she looked up once she felt that she looked decent again - even if she didn't FEEL that way. "I'm terrified of birds." She wanted to hide under the desk.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Rachel looked around as Professor Art joined them. "No, Professor. It's not that.'' She hesitated, not sure she wanted to reveal Esme's fear. That was her friend's decision. The Eagle looked down at her again as she raised her head. The first year contracted her arm around Esme in a comforting squeeze. "All the owls in here are overwhelming her. But I'm right here, Esme, and I won't be far when I go to continue my potion.'' She paused, thinking. "I don't know if you want to or if Professor Art will allow it but you are welcome to levitate your cauldron over to my workstation. Haddie and Sam are nearby and the best thing is none of us brought owls or any birds. We'll keep you company.'' There was no need for Esme to feel overwhelmed by birds when she was surrounded by baby Eagles. They were not real birds after all.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Leaving the decision about whether Esme would join her or not, Rachel made her way back to her station. She also needed to keep an eye on Haddie. So far her best friend seemed to be doing everything right but that was as far as Rachel had witnessed while she had not been working on her potion or had been over by Esme.
The first year took one of the syringes and carefully measured out half a millimeter of wormwood essence into it. Then she added it to the cauldron. She decided she would keep the syringe for her kit since the Professor didn't mind if they did. She left it on her desk in one corner for now. She would clean it later because right now, she needed to move on to the next step.

A glance at the steps on the board reminded Olivia that again they needed to wait. Again they needed to let the brewing potion simmer. So once the fluxweed was all inside the cauldron, did just that. The Ravenclaw then kept good watch of the time, being sure to make sure to let it simmer for 3 minutes. No more…and no less. Easy enough and it meant they weren’t just doing one thing after another after another.
It was then that she got a pause and a chance to look around and take notice of things. For one, she seemed to be a few clicks behind the professor and thus needed to be extra careful in keeping track of own work. Following the man exactly and doing what he said at exactly the same moments might not be right. Just do it close enough and at the times he mentioned and she should be good she supposed.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
It seemed that the next step was just prepping an ingredient. Rachel picked up the second syringe, suddenly feeling nervous. Professor Art had said that the Boomslang venom was rather concentrated. She didn't want to even go over the required 0.1 of a milliliter by even by the tiniest bit because it could be a huge set back for her potion.
Biting her lip, she slowly drew venom into the syringe, looking at the markings on it to guide her into collecting the right amount. "I think I've gotten it right,'' she murmured to herself. She double checked the markings and breathed a sigh of relief. Yes, that was 0.1 of a milliliter of boomslang venom.

Soon enough she glanced at her watch and found she was almost at the three minute mark. Olivia started a quiet countdown in her head as she awaited the time to be right. Once the last of the seconds drifted by, her attention was back on the list of steps ready to move one. “Scourgify…” she cast on her wooden stirrer not sure if she had taken care of it earlier and wanting to be sure it was clean. The she slipped the one end into the stewing liquid and began to stir it as directed.

Fluxweed properly crushed, or at least Brooklyn was assuming it was, she then proceeded to put it into her cauldron. It wasn’t as if she could stall, or as if she had any reason to stall. Even the question that had been asked about belladonna being poisonous hadn’t made her pause. As far as she knew, it wasn’t necessarily the leaves that were the poisonous part anyhow, and after the previous lesson, she doubted the professor would risk poisoning them again. He seemed way too nervous about everything for that to be a threat, and she trusted her own skills too.
Now she had to go back to waiting, for three minutes this time. The fact Professor Newton had moved them forward hardly bothered her, since she was mostly working at her own pace anyhow and she knew what she was doing. Besides, writing down the new steps gave her a distraction from simply waiting. It made things a little less annoying.

Carl was extremely silent today. He did not want to stand out, after what he did that lesson when he was poisoned. His pet owl was making quite a racket though. He tried to calm the excited animal down, while his eyes were fixed on Professor Newton. Truth be told, he was not sure if he had a connection with his pet. Every time he tried to communicate with her, she flew away from him. It was all a bit depressing.
Having cleaned his tools before the lesson had begun, the Hufflepuff went up to the desk and grabbed the ingredients. After pouring out six cups of water, he added them to his cauldron. As he had not mastered the Fire-Making Spell, he imitated the Professor by lighting his Bunsen burner. He adjusted the flame and heaved his cauldron over it. Then came the waiting. Carl set his timer and stared at it really hard, afraid of losing even one second.

Hady's eyes drifted towards the board checking out the next step the moment Professor Newton began speaking. Hearing, seeing and doing things always was a good combination for her.
Ready to move on she reached for her already clean syringe. With it in hand she then carefully measured out 1ml worth of the Wormwood essence. No more. No less. How one got the essence of wormwood she didn't exactly know but that wasn't entirely all that important right now. However it was something she could look up later on when she was in her common room if she felt the need to do so.
Into the cauldron went the full amount of the contents held inside her syringe that was needed. This step was now officially completed.

He'd set the timer for five minutes and busied himself with his notes and next ingredients while it timed out. The Belladonna leaves were easy enough to pick, and in no time he had fifteen of them ready and rearing to go. When the timer went off, he was prepared to execute the next step.
Counting them out ONE more time just to be sure, Zeke added them to the cauldron. With that done, he placed the three sprigs of dried Fluxweed into his pestle and mortar and worked it enough that there was a greater area of it to infuse. With that too added to his cauldron, Zeke set the timer once more but this time it was set for three minutes instead.
When the timer went off - after what still felt like a long time - the Gryffindor fifth year took up his wooden stirrer and gave the contents of his cauldron three stirs in a clockwise direction.

"Scourgify.'' The simple Scouring Charm cleaned out her mortar and pestle and thus Rachel was able to add one unicorn horn. She picked up the pestle to crush it. This took an immense amount of time since they were required to have a powder but she was very patient. While she did this, the girl would sometimes cast Esme concerned looks while Haddie's action got looked over as best as she could to ensure her friend was carrying on well.
Finally, the horn was reduced to a fine powder. The girl added the Boomslang venom and then mixed for a while. There was no paste forming here. Once done, she emptied the mixture into a clean dish and began to time the waiting period.

Okay so what came next?
Hady glanced over at her parchment with the instructions. Quickly skimming down over each one she finally came to the next part. Picking up a clean and unused syringe she carefully measured out .01mL of the Boomslang Venom and double checking it just because before setting the syringe aside as instructed.
That seemed rather to easy to just be one step all in itself but it was. Could she move on to the next step since Hagan was still being way to quiet and she had nothing else left to do?

Two minutes.
While Rachel waited for the minutes to pass, she began updating her notes by adding the just completed steps and ingredients they had used.
Three minutes.
The Boomslang venom and unicorn horn mixture was added to her cauldron. Now she had to let the cauldron simmer for another three minutes. Three seemed to be a major number when it involved this potion.

The next step on her parchment gave her a little something to do. With the use of her wand she cast a soft, "scourgify" on her mortar and pestle first. When both items were clean she set one Unicorn Horn into the mortar to be crushed with the use of the pestle. Which she did without much thought.
It took a little bit of time and effort to get the unicorn horn ground up nicely into a powder as instructed. When it was Hady then added the Boomsland venom into it which she had set aside earlier in the syringe. She then mixed both together.
There was no time being wasted here as she added the mixture from the mortar into the cauldron and set her timer for just one minute.

With her wooden stirrer, Rachel stirred the mixture in the cauldron.
One clockwise stir.
Two clockwise stirs.
Three clockwise stirs.
"Scourgify.'' With the Scouring charm, her mortar and pestle were clean again. The girl tossed two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of water before starting to mash it all together. Slowly but surely, it turned into a smooth paste and Rachel added it to her cauldron.
Athena hooted in her cage. Austin figured she was unhappy with her current state. She wasn't too fond of her cage, unless it was on the train home. The train seemed to soothe her, and she usually fell asleep. But today she seemed a little restless. Like she would rather go out flying and hunting than sit in the dark classroom.
But Austin was in his element. He had already cleaned his tools and cauldron, and even put on his lab coat in his dorm, rather than in the classroom. This class was going to be a good one, he knew it.
Once the instructions were on the board, he wrote them in his notebook, and got to work. "Six cups of water..." The teen mumbled to himself. He only had the one measuring cup, so he was going to have to refill his cup. No worries. He thought. With a quick "Auguamenti", he filled his cup and poured it into his cauldron. "One... Two... Three... Four... Five... Six..." He mumbled the next number each time he poured another cup.
After that, he put on a small flame, and turned his dragon egg timer for five minutes. All he had to do now was wait and hope Athena didn't break from her cage.

Azura watched the Professor carefully as he gave them the next set of instructions. Those syringes were cute!! She was going to keep them! The next part of the potions looked a bit more difficult but nothing Az couldn't handle!
She liked things like this!
Right! Time to start!!
She took her syringe and got the proper amount of wormwood essence and added it to her potion, before getting another smaller dose of the boomslang venom and setting that aside..
Oh cool they got to keep the syringes. Kitty didn't own any potion making ingredients aside from the ones she had to buy for classes, though she planned to expand her collection and she definitely was going to make this potion during summer vacation.
Okay, now on to the next five steps. Taking the cute syringe, Kitty measured out half a milliliter of wormwood and added it to her potion. Then she set it aside and took out her wand and pointed it at it. "Scourgify!"

Was something up with Esme?
Olivia had noticed her and Rachel talking and the older girl seemed to be a bit out of it. Unfortunately since they were moving on and she didn’t want to get too far behind, especially after slipping a little behind already, she couldn’t inquire anything of either friend. But she did make a note to check in with Esme once class was over and if she still seemed off. But for now she was supposed to work with those little syringes the professor had offered from his personal stash.
She picked up one cautiously and turned to the wormwood essence collected. Placing the smaller end into the liquid, Olivia worked on maneuvering the other piece like Newton had demonstrated and attempted getting a sample. It took a few tries but eventually she got it completely filled up and figured she could add it into the cauldron as directed.
While the five minutes were going, Austin used this time to pluck the leaves from the Belladonna sprigs. He did his best to work efficiently, mainly because he wanted the leaves to be whole. Any part missing could change the potion, or ruin it altogether. The last thing he wanted was to start over. Austin A. Moore wanted this done right the first time.
Ding!
Once the timer went off, he counted his leaves one last time, making sure he had 15. Then he added them into his cauldron. Next he crushed the Fluxweed sprigs with his clean mortar and pestle. The instructions said they had to be picked during a full moon, and dried over one week. When you're working with someone else's ingredients, you find that they may not be picked or grown right. You had to trust the person giving you the ingredients. And Austin did trust the professor, but there was always that wonder. That maybe something was done wrong. He really didn't want a repeat of earlier in the year. At least this potion wasn't fed to his pet... right?
Pushing the thought from his mind, he put the roughly crushed sprigs into his potion. Then he set his timer for three minutes, and turned his attention to his owl. She was his most trusted pet, and he loved her. The last thing he wanted was to hurt her in any way, which is why getting this potion right was important. If it had to be given to her, and it was poisonous in any way, she would surely lose trust in him. That was the last thing he wanted.
Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
Wait…what?
They were allowed to keep the syringes if they wanted to?
Olivia looked over the ones in her possession as if debating. Maybe she would since she had at least four years of more potions lessons and she wasn’t sure just what might be needed along the way. That being decided, she picked up a clean syringe so she could do the next step. Switching from wormwood essence to the boomslang venom, careful to use a smaller amount this time around as the instructions told them to.
It was a touch tricky since it had to be precise and she didn’t want to wind up poisoning someone if she went at it wrong. Who knew the impact of the concentrated liquid they were using that was already labeled as a venom. Well maybe Newton at least. Nevertheless, it didn’t look like it would matter much once the first year finally got her sample, carefully setting it aside as mentioned.

All right, now it was time to clean her mortar and pestle. "Scourify!" she said as she aimed her wand at her mortar and the remnants of her fluxweed disappeared.
Good! She put her one unicorn horn in it and grabbed her pestle and started to work at the horn.. Gah! This wasn't going to be easy! Especially if they had to get it into a fine powder!
Crush.. Crush.. Crush.. Azura was starting to work up a sweat from all this work and pressure she was putting on the horn.. At least it sort of crumbled easily?
Meh..
She kept crushing.. Hopefully it wouldn't take her too much more time to do this! She didn't want to ruin the potion!
She blew her bangs up off her forehead as she kept pulverizing the horn into powder.
The mortar and pestle were now completely clean so Kitty took one beautiful unicorn horn (seriously, unicorns were awesome) and began crushing it with the mortar and pestle. As she was crushing it she couldn't help but wonder how these unicorn horns happened to be at their desks. She vaguely remembered that one other student had asked this last lesson but she hadn't been paying attention.
While she was crushing the unicorn horn she realized that she had forgotten to paint her nails black this morning. Oh well. She'd apply later. It was probably better this way so that her nails didn't get dirty during the lesson.
Once she finished crushing the horn she added the Boomslang venom and began mixing them together.
Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
Now they were cleaning again. Mortar and pestle was to be used again and it needed to be clean and spotless for no cross-contamination from earlier materials. Something that was kind of drilled into them at various points of the lessons they had had this year. Very important. So out came her wand once more and Olivia went to cleaning. “Scourgify,” she cast on the mortar, echoing the spell individually on the pestle for good measure. That all done, Olivia added the requisite unicorn horn into the bowl and began crushing it as needed.
Crush...crush...crush.
Crush...crush...crush.
Eventually it looked like powder and she hoped it was a fine enough powder at that. Then as instructed, she emptied the vial of the Boomslang venom into the powder and proceeded to mix it all up. Yeah...certainly not a paste, but then it wasn't supposed to be apparently. Setting it aside to wait, Olivia simply sat on her stool and waited with the occasional look at her watch, her legs absently swinging a little. And once the three minutes were up...bam it went in as well.
Haddie smiled thankfully at Professor Newton and took the towel. She spent the next minute drying herself off as best she could. Okay, back to the potion... the potentially soon to be poisonous potion. Haddie gave Rachel as small nervous glance, almost as if to say goodbye and thank you for being her friend.
The wormwood wasn't the issue, but it was the next step and a good bit of practice for drawing only the correct amount of the ingredient. Haddie picked up a syringe and placed it against the wormwood, drawing it into the syringe. 0.3ml. 0.44ml. 0.55ml... carp. She emptied the syringe a little. 0.42ml. Carp! Drew a bit more in. 0.59ml. Double Carp! Emptied a bit. 0.52ml. 0.48ml. 0.56ml DANG IT! 0.46ml. 0.53ml. She was getting frustrated and impatient. 0.47ml. 0.51ml.
...
Close enough.
She was done trying to get exactly half a millilitre of wormwood. With an annoyed sigh, Haddie emptied the syringe into the cauldron. Now for the potential poison... please let this go better.
