Art was standing behind his desk with Madame Curie perched on his left shoulder. He was organising all of the ingredients into an order which would allow his students to easily come to the desk when it was time and collect them. His white lab coat was on, and all of his personal equipment was set up ready to be used, to brew the potion today.
As it was nearing 10:30, he opened the door to allow the students to come in and get ready for class.
Ingredients
• 6 cups water
• 15 fresh Belladonna leaves
• 3 dried Fluxweed sprigs, roughly crushed in mortar and pestle (picked during a full moon, and dried over one week)
• 0.5mL Wormwood essence
• 2Tbsp Lacewing flies
• 1tsp honey
• 1tsp water
• 0.1mL Boomslang venom
• 1 crushed Unicorn Horn
• 1 measure of your animal
Method
1. Add 6 cups of water to you cauldron, and light a small flame. Simmer the water for 5 minutes to slowly heat to an appropriate temperature
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise
6. Measure, with a 1ml syringe, your Wormwood essence, and add to the cauldron.
7. Measure 0.1mL Boomslang venom in a different syringe and place to the side for a moment
8. Clean the mortar and pestle, add one unicorn horn, and crush it to a fine powder, then add the Boomslang venom. Mix together (it will not make a paste) and set aside for three minutes, then add to the cauldron.
9. Simmer the cauldron for three minutes, then stir three times, clockwise
10. Clean the mortar and pestle, and add two tablespoons of Lacewing flies, one teaspoon of honey, and one teaspoon of water, and crush until it makes a smooth paste. Carefully add the paste to the cauldron
OOC: Hi everyone, welcome to lesson two! I hope you remembered to bring your characters pets in their cages, and put on their lab coats, which are lining the wall, ready for class.
OOC: Class has officially began! Just pretend you've been here all along.

Animal whispering potion.....
Did he really want to know what went on in his nutty bird's brain??? Really? He doubted it somehow.
Nevertheless, as instructed, Zeke approached Professor Newton's desk and retrieved the ingredients that he would need. Each on separate dishes so as not to cross contaminate, and of course they were measured too. Such a good Gryffindor he was.
With everything he needed at his fingertips, Zeke measured out six cups of water using a stop-start "Aguamenti," to do so. Each cup was added to his cauldron and with that set, he lit the flame beneath. "Incendio." He adjusted the flame accordingly and checked the next direction.

Rachel nodded, the nod joining the comforting smile on her face. She made up her mind to keep an eye out at intervals for Esme. The Hufflepuff had looked after her during that lesson when they had all gotten poisoned and even put up with some of the mean things Rachel vaguely remembering saying. She was just returning the favour and in any case, it was what friends would do for each other.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Belladonna leaves added, Rachel turned her attention to her mortar and pestle which she had just pulled directly before her. She dropped three sprigs of dried fluxweed and dropped them into the mortar then began to crush them altogether. She was thankful there wasn't a need for a very fine powder or she would have been crushing longer than usual.
When the girl was satisfied that she had crushed the fluxweed to the right consistency and amount that Professor Art had as well, she added that to the cauldron.
Post 3 (I love how he mentioned surface area as the reason, so pharmaceutic-esque XD)

After she added belladona leaves to the cauldron... What should she do next? Ava read the instruction from her notebook. The dried fluxweed leaves, right....
She needed to crush the leaves first before adding them to the cauldron. Okay, she found the mortar and pestle, then cleaned them with the scouring charm first (yes, her father always said that clean all the utensils before using them is very necessary.) and then crushed the leaves. Crush, crush, crush... The professor did mention that they don't need to crush them into a very fine powder because they just needed to increase the surface area... Though she had zero idea what that mean.
Maybe soon there's a Ravenclaw student was gonna ask about what that surface area thingy mean.

The next set of instructions told them to wait for three minutes as the combination of ingredients simmered further. Rachel checked her burner to ensure it was still lighted and timed herself using her watch, just in case something went wrong with Professor Art's timer.
One minute.
In the meanwhile, she updated her notes by adding the last few steps and ingredients she had used.
Two minutes.
The girl quickly re-read what she had written before directing her attention back to the simmering cauldron and her watch. The time should pass by soon.

Five minutes of simply staring at the school owl and trying to determine a legit name for the creature left Tia with feeling more disconnected then when she'd selected him from the owlery just moments before. But she was confident in her ability to brew a potion and thus lack of a connection didn't necessarily mean she'd fail at this particular potion.
2. Pluck the 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, will need approximately 2 sprigs, and add them to the cauldron once five minutes is up
Reading over the next step, the seventh year counted out fifteen leaves of the Belladonna plant, carefully adding them to the potion once she double counted the leaves to ensure they were all there and the count was accurate.

Once Ava had finished crushing the leaves, she added the coarse fluxweed to her cauldron. And then she read back her notebook to see what should she do next after she added the fluxweed.
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes.
So now she have to wait again? Wow, this potions required sooooo many waiting steps (just two for now, but she already felt like there were five steps of waiting already.) And now, while waiting for the three minutes... What should she do? Maybe nothing. Just stay silent and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait.......

Three minutes.
Rachel scooped up her wooden stirrer and placed it into the cauldron. She was actually surprised that so far she had managed to do everything right. Had her talk with Austin really boosted her confidence so much? She simply must remember to tell him that she was comfortable brewing now. He had been right; brewing a potion was much like following a recipe when cooking and baking.

Once Scarlett was sure that she hadn't over-mashed her fluxweed sprigs, she took them and tossed them in the pot. Now that that was done, the next step was...to let it simmer for three minutes. So more waiting...
As she sat back in her chair, she looked at Snowball and smiled. "I bet I know exactly what you're thinking - hairless cat master has dragged me to some infernal dungeon and is making me wait for lunch. I'm plotting her death tonight while confined here," she grinned, sticking her fingers through the carrier holes again and playing with his whiskers. He gave a content purr and started to paw at her finger playfully. At least she knew he wasn't THAT mad at her...as of now, that may change after the potion was given...

Haddie didn't say anything while Professor Newton reassured her. He thought she was afraid of getting poisoned again. But that hadn't crossed her mind really. Actually, that wasn't true. It had crossed her mind, but not because she was afraid of bad ingredients or anything. She was afraid she was going to poison herself with her own lousy potioneering.
Yep.
She was doomed.
Sigh.
Oh. They were going to be able to understand their pets! Cool! It was going to help her and Asher bond more as she had yet to really connect with Asher. They just didn't get each other as easily as Wimple and she did. So, while it wasn't turning into animals, it was still really cool and Haddie still really wanted to get this one. And if she did, she was going to save some to talk with Wimple, because that owl was practically her soulmate.
Haddie played with Asher through the bars while she listened to the Professor. When he was done she jotted down the instructions on the board and took a deep, reassuring breath. She tried to be her normal confident self, but a lifetime of disasters in the kitchen and a year of poorly brewed potions made it really, really hard. This time she'd get it. That's what she tried to tell herself while she got up, grabbed her lab coat on the way to get the ingredients and brought them all back to her seat. She kept repeating it like a mantra the whole time.
dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff
Janelle had no idea why Professor Newton asked them to bring their pets. Actually she had several ideas, but none of them were probably correct. She decided to remain silent on this one. When the professor explained the real reason, Janelle was surprised. She had not seen that coming. She was going to be a pygmy puff whisperer? Well ok then.
Janelle had cleaned most of her equipment already. She copied down the instructions from the board, then went up to retrieve her supplies. Having checked her list, Janelle grabbed the provided dishes and gathered the ingredients that she would need for the potion. She carried everything back to her work station and then returned for the syringes and measuring spoons. Once she got back to her station a second time, she made sure to clean the additional equipment. Now she was ready to brew.

Ariadne looked around the classroom. It really made her miss her family and her home. Sure, she'd gone home for Christmas, but that really hadn't been enough for a twelve-year-old who had never been gone from home before. This was her mother's classroom... Ariadne would have given anything to have been taught by her mom.
Sigh.
While lost in her thoughts, she'd gathered the three sprigs of dried fluxweed. She added it to her mortar and pestle (which she'd cleaned at the beginning of the lesson) and began to roughly crush it. only enough to increase the surface area, the instructions read. Whatever that meant.
Ariadne did what she thought it meant and then added it to the cauldron, as well.

With the water in the cauldron and her cauldron set on the burner Hady was ready to get the flame going.
"Incendio," she muttered softly using her wand and pointing at the flame beneath her cauldron setting it to low. Now the wait for five minutes was next and she did this after making sure to set the timer for it. While waiting Hady checked on her other ingredients yet again just in case. This didn't take her long at all seeing as she already knew she had everything.
Picking up her two sprigs of Belladonna she counted out to fifteen while plucking the leaves from them. It helped some of the five minutes pass by a bit faster as well.
Five. Four. Three. Two and finally one. When the timer went off Hadleigh carefully added the fifteen Belladonna leaves into the cauldron.

When she was back at her workstation, her fragile confidence shattered; overwhelmed by loose ingredients and her strong desire to get this one right. Three reassuring breaths and a full minute later, and Haddie had built herself up enough again to reach out and grab the cup with a nervous, slightly shaky hand. She aimed her wand at the cup's basin.
"Aguamenti!" A strong blast of water erupted from her wand, knocking the cup out of her hand and spraying back into her face. Just like it did during the fishing CoMC lesson... "Finite!" The water stopped, but Haddie was already drenched. "Great." Her tone dripped with frustration. This was a superb start... but it was more than that. Her magic was wonky and chaotic lately and she couldn't figure out why. Haddie rung out the sleeves of her robes and picked the full cup back up and poured the water into the cauldron. Only five more to go. Great.

All right, now that her belladonna leaves were floating in her water, she looked up at the board to see what was next.
Right, she gathered the three sprigs of dried fluxweed, put it in her mortar and started to crush it up with her pestle. She did a few crushes before she checked to make sure that it seemed right..
She checked the board again and nodded.
Right.. Just enough to increase the surface area..
She checked her fluxweed again and after one last crush she tipped it into her cauldron and nodded a bit as it seemed right.
Goodness she loved potions! This was so fun! she could sit here and brew potions all day!!

Hady's eyes drifted to her parchment for a split second helping her remember what was next. The fluxweed. Gathering the three sprigs needed and dropping them into her mortar she began to smash them up using her pestle. Not to much so that it looked like powder but just enough to increase the surface area.
All it really took was a few good hits and a little pressure with the pestle to achieve. Nothing to difficult as of yet. Looking down into her mortar at the now crushed up fluxweed and assuring herself that it was how it shoulder be, Hady added it into her waiting cauldron.
All looked to be good so far.

Step four was just to simmer for another three minutes, so seeing as Ariadne had some time to spare, she decided to do a quick clean-up of her area. She began did a quick cleaning of her work station and a few of the materials she'd used do far. She'd always been taught that when you least expect it, the tiniest amount of dust can land on one of your materials and throw off your entire potion.
The last thing she wanted to do was kill her owl instead of just trying to read its thoughts.
..she'd JUST gotten it for Christmas!
Ariadne checked the time and noted she still had a minute remaining to let things simmer. She legitimately had nothing else to do while she waited, so she just stood there and waited...and waited. Time crawled when you were waiting for it to pass.

Maybe it was the stubborn and independent nature that she possessed that kept Esme from asking Rachel for help or pointing out to Professor Newton that she COULDN'T do this. In her state she had forgotten to even refer to him as Rat Man. Maybe she should have been in Gryffindor because at the moment she was trying to be strong.
Deep breath.
Three sprigs of dried Fluxweed were added to her mortar and Esme set about crushing them. Crush. Crush. Crush. The motions were actually rather calming for some reason and she had to work hard to make sure that she didn't end up forming a powder. Exactly HOW much was enough to increase the surface area was beyond her, so she decided to look around at what her classmates were doing. At least that way she would more or less be doing things correctly; unless of course the bunch of them ended up doing things wrong. It wasn't in her nature to look at things in a glass half empty kind of way so she didn't entertain that thought for more than a second or two.
When she felt that she had crushed the Fluxweed enough, she added it to the cauldron.

This next step was incredibly simple. All that she needed to do was set her timer one more and wait three minutes. That was it.
Picking up the timer and setting it for the correct amount of time Hady placed it back on her table. With not much else to do she picked up her quill and lightly put a small 'x' in front of each step on her parchment to show she had already done that one. It hardly took her a few seconds to do this before she was laying the quill back down.
Slowly her eyes drifted downwards to the cage beside her chair. It appeared that Hagan was perfectly content inside it still curled up into a ball on his blanket along with his stuffed toy asleep. He was really making it easy on her so far and for this she was thankful.

Kitty approached the counter to gather the ingredients. While she was doing this she turned to Professor Art and said, "I think this is a really interesting potion, professor. I always wondered what my worms think and I guess I'll be able to find out now. Oh, and I'm going to name the frog Olaf, if that's okay."
Then she returned to her spot and pointed her wand at the cup."Aguamenti!" A small stream of water flowed out of her wand and into the cup. She filled and emptied the cup six times into the cauldron, before turning her wand towards the cauldron and muttering "Incendio." A small flame spurted out of her wand and went to the bottom of the cauldron. That went well. Gone were the days where Kitty had stumbled over performing simply spells, now this type of work came easy to her.
Now all she had to do was wait for five minutes. Nearby she noticed Haddie having some trouble with filling the water and wondered what the problem was.
Otter This World ♡ Catpurrccino ♡ Slotherin ♡ Pandamonium
Waiting three minutes wasn't so bad as opposed to ten or more for some other potions. Plus watching her furry kitty friend even if he was asleep really helped the time tick by faster. It wasn't all that long before she heard the buzzing of her timer making her turn in her seat and reach for her nicely cleaned wooden stirrer.
Dipping the stirring into her cauldron she stirred one...two...three times in a clockwise motion. When that was finished she used her wand to 'scourgify' the stirrer clean once more before setting it aside. Now all she had to do was wait for the next set of instructions and hope those were as easy to handle as the previous ones had been thus far.
Even if this particular potion was going well Hady had to admit she was actually glad that Professor was brewing his own potion along with them. This also made the steps much easier to follow along with.

More waiting was required for this step. Oh joy. Esme supposed that she was rather glad that it was three minutes instead of 15 or 20 but she still wasn't very keen on it at the moment. She supposed she could spend the time keeping herself busy the same way as she had done last time.
Bending over, she checked to see that the fire under her cauldron was burning as it should. There shouldn't be any problem with it, she just felt that it was better to look at that than to let her eyes wander over to the cages of owls that she was trying so hard to avoid right now. Couldn't people see that most birds were EVIL? The only exception was her little Barnaby.
One minute.
Satisfied with that, Esme focused her attention on the potion itself. True, she wasn't exactly sure what it was SUPPOSED to look like, but the fact that it hadn't began smoking or turned vibrant red had to mean that she was doing something right. For a moment she had considered taking a glance at the Professor's cauldron but that was too risky. She'd just have to go under the assumption that things were as they should be - not as if she hadn't been following the steps despite the feelings of shakiness and paranoia.
Two minutes.
Her attention now shifted to Sparkle, who she affectionately petted through the bars of her cage. The little red fluff ball began to bounce and squeak and it made her feel bad for imprisoning her. It was the only way that this could be done; otherwise she would have bounced off the table, possibly landing into someone else's cauldron. Shaking her head, she looked once more to see what time it was.
The three minutes had just passed.

While she waited for the cauldron to boil Kitty began picking the leaves off the Belladonna. She counted fifteen and took two sprigs as well, following the instructions super carefully. If there was going to be another accident it wasn't going to be her fault, not that it was her fault last time.
When she finished she waited three more minutes for the cauldron to boil, watching her fellow students doing the same thing and going ahead. Then once the five minutes were over she added the leaves and the sprigs to the cauldron.

Were they in the home stretch yet?
Esme looked at the ingredients list and felt the urge to cry. There were so many things that hadn't been added to the potions yet and that meant that there was still quite a way for them to go. Coming here had been a mistake and she really didn't know how much more of this she could handle - certainly not enough to finish the potion. She was no Gryffindor, just a weak little girl.
Sniffling, she picked up her wooden stirrer and stirred the potion 1... 2... 3... times in what she thought was a clockwise direction; at this point it was hard for her to tell what way was up and what way was down let alone which way a clock worked. With the stirrer still in hand, she let her head fall back down to her desk and began to cry softly while trying to make sure that no one noticed it.
Even at times like this she wanted to appear strong.

All right, now that her fluxweed was in.. It just had to simmer for another three minutes..
Right!
Azura glanced up at the clock taking note of the time before she looked over at Snowy, the owl was watching her closey and she smiled at him..
She reached her finger into the cage and gently rubbed his head and was rewarded with a soft hoot. "I'll be able to talk to you soon.. Are you exited about that? " She asked her owl softly before looking up at the clock!
