Once allowed inside the office, one of the first things you may notice is the sudden drop in temperature. Though there is a fireplace resting along the back wall of the room, Professor Draper prefers the cold, thus the fireplace will most likely remain unused all term. And if the cool air wasn’t the first thing to draw your attention, perhaps you've found Merlin sitting on a cushion beside the Professor’s desk.
As for the room itself, aside from the seats meant for student visitors and the few lamps that light the room when it’s dark out, most everything is made of wood. The office is quite simplistic. Professor Draper doesn’t see the need in excess or clutter. Instead, preferring simplicity and believing in minimal decor. He does, however, keep a few journals on a shelf behind his chair, along with a book or two sat on his desk at all times.
Best get comfortable on your own, the Professor probably won’t offer you anything while you’re here.
OOC: Please only post here if you have been invited in and have posted in the waiting area first.
How polite was Professor Draper for getting up and opening the door for her? She was going to do her BEST for him, just so he knew! So she got up, eyed the beast one last time before walking quickly out (she might have been careful to keep the man between herself and it ahem) as she said "Have a nice day, sir."
Melbourne absolutely thought Professor Draper was awesome…his face was even more so of course. “Yeah…well…she is my guardian” so that probably made things make sense right? “But Sherlock’s possessive too” she nodded.
Yes she was serious. Professors probably had a better grasp on some of these books didn’t they? At least that was what Mel thought. “Of course…that’s probably a good idea” she nodded a bit and smirked a bit when thinking about a whole section about creatures.
“Of course Professor Draper,” she grinned. “Thank you for all the help…” well it wasn’t really help but seeing his face had been nice right? “It’s been nice meeting you, I should head off now I think? M’gonna check out the library section you mentioned” she nodded while backing slowly closer to the door. "You have a nice day Professor," she grinned.

Oh yes, he noted how keen she was on staying as far away from Merlin as she could. It'd make for an interesting time in lessons, that's for sure. He was incredibly curious to see how she'd behave around bigger creatures and actual beasts. Only time could tell. So he let her walk off before returning to his desk and cracking open his book.
SPOILER!!: Mel!

Of course it was a good idea. There wasn't a single 'probably' about it. James knew what he was doing. He was the professional around here. Clearly.
"Anytime," he nodded. Not really. There were specific times. He had office hours. And particular hours that merited better moods. "You as well," he gave her a polite nod again and watched as she bounced.
Interesting kid.
Though they all were, in some respect.

SPOILER!!: Draper
James was drowning in all this paperwork. Well, not exactly paperwork. More like homework. Why did he assign all of this to begin with? Next week, the kids were getting no homework. Officially. As much as he felt they all needed the discipline, he also felt he needed a break. This job was much more exhausting than they made it sound in the description.
Taking another sip of his coffee, he reached to dill his quill in some more red ink. And that's when he heard the knock on the door. Yes that's right! James Draper was for once very HAPPY to hear a knock on his door. Unless it was the hag returning from the forrest, then she could leave. But otherwise, any distraction from this unfortunate pit of never ending work, was welcome.
Taking his time to get out of his seat, the Professor made his way to his door and turned the nob. He was a bit surprised to see the visitor sat on one of the seats, though he supposed that's why he had them there to begin with. For comfort... Or something like that. "Miss Lynch," he nodded. Yes, he took his time to remember some names. She was a good student, therefore her name was one of them. It was simple. Strategic. "Come in," he held the door open for her. You're welcome.
Really, she hadn't been sitting down all that long before the door to the office had opened. There stood Professor Draper looking at her. The man was probably wondering why exactly she was even there. SHE was now wondering the exact same thing. It was much to late to change her mind however.
With a small smile set in place Hady rose to her feet slipping the strap to her bag over her shoulder. "Hello Professor Draper, I hope I didn't come at a bad time." Yes, yes in fact she did hope that. He could send her away to return at another time he he was to busy! Please let him be to busy!
Only it didn't appear that he was. For if the professor had been to busy to answer the knock he wouldn't have done so. And her certainly wouldn't have invited her in which he did. Stepping slowly into the room her hazel eyes swept over everything including (Merlin) where they lingered for a moment or two longer then anywhere else. Turning her attention and her focus back onto the reason for her visit she spoke quietly, "I've been thinking more about my career path when I finish my lessons but I was hoping I could speak with you about it." He worked with animals daily and that's what she wanted to do...sort of. Heal them anyhow.

Yes well, they could call it efficiency. James was good at that. Efficiency, like most other things really. And at this rate, he'd be willing to let even Backpack boy in. And thus we have a rare moment in which James Draper is welcoming.
Which brought him to point A, "Not at all," it was perfect timing, actually. Just about to start looking at another essay. And by the looks of it, this one was pound to get a T. Horrendous. Did the students not realize that they'd be lowered down a mark for every stain they left on their parchment? Here's some expert advice kids, don't do your assignments whilst midnight snacking. It never turned out well.
James waited for the girl to step inside before letting go of the door and walking to his seat. "Have a seat," he gestured to the chairs facing his desk, before leaning back in his own and listening to what she had to say. Career path, he nodded. The others who had come to him convinced that creatures were their calling... They were all fetuses. No well, they were all underclassmen. The first years. Too excitable, too naive, hadn't taken a single exam in their life. Didn't know what any of it meant. So of course he wouldn't turn them away completely, but they wouldn't be taken seriously just yet. Not until they proved themselves.
Miss Lynch on the other hand, was older, had more experience, approached this office visit the right way, and... James was also in a good mood, which helped.
"So you're considering a career in the field of creatures, then?" He raised a brow, assuming that this is why she had chosen to come to him in particular seeing as James wasn't the most friendly looking Professor of the bunch, it had to be something other than his warm, shining personality. That, and maybe the question would encourage her to elaborate.

Aaww so she hadn't interrupted anything important? Darn it. That meant that he had time for her. Time to talk and as good as this was she was nervous. More so then talking to the other professors of even her Head of House. Why, she really had no idea. It was so silly of her and she knew it.
Hady smiled gently along with giving a small nod of her head. Thank you for NOT being busy just then. Slowly walking further into the office she choose a seat and sat down, her bag on her lap when told to do so. "Thank you." Did he even hear her? Why was she being so quiet today? Gosh where was Frankie or Zeke or someone that could help her relax and make her feel not so shy all of a sudden. Her career was important to her.
"I am, Professor," Hady replied softly tucking a piece of hair behind her ear getting if off of her face. "I've always liked being around different creatures Sir, big and small alike. I have no trouble at all in allowing them their own space and time needed to come to me on their own or get right down and in there doing whatever task might need to be done. Specifically in the future I want to be a Healer for all creatures but everyone needs to start somewhere, right? And what better way to begin then to really get in there and form a bond or at the very least a friendship and some trust with as many creatures as I can." Did any of this make sense? James couldn't tell how nervous she was, could he? Gosh she really hoped not.

James couldn't tell how nervous she was, could he? Gosh she really hoped not.
He nodded in response to her thanks and took a sip of his tea as he listened to her explanation.
Her elaboration was quite detailed and James really only partially payed attention to all the particulars. He of course nodded the entire time as if he were mentally taking note of each adjective, however, really he was only keeping track of the bigger picture words.
And despite her hopes, he could tell she was nervous, but he wouldn’t make mention of it. Already he had decided he liked this one. She was humble. They others? Not so much. He didn’t say anything immediately after she finished explaining, though he looked at her with consideration. He hadn’t ever officially advised a student on a matter such as this before… So he needed to choose his words wisely, make sure he did it justice.
”Well Miss Lynch, the healing field is certainly a very competitive one,” he nodded. ”Even in regard to creatures.” He didn’t mean to discourage and hopefully this didn’t do such a thing. ”But you’ve picked the perfect time to being delving deeper into your exploration with this path of study.” Most students waited until the very last minute to figure things out, but the fact that she was here early in her Fifth Year meant she was taking matters seriously. Very good.
”Though of course, most of your options would require further education after Hogwarts,” he paused waiting to hear what she thought of this. Was she aware that going to uni would be a required step and would she be willing? He raised a single brow, hoping that she would take initiative to voice her thoughts or any concerns that she may have. Hopefully none, but he could work with it.

Hadleigh shifted in her seat. James' eyes were on her and she knew he was studying her. Going over everything she had just said and then some. He was evaluation her and this somehow unnerved her even more. Whatever came from this day could tilt how her future went for her. Well not entirely but she knew that he could help her with her choices and plans that needed to be set into motion.
This she knew. The whole healing thing was a very big field. Was she competitive enough to pull herself through it all to make a name for herself. YES! "I know Sir," she replied softly with a firm nod of her head. Extra studying. Further education wouldn't be a problem in the least. This she had expected and knew of since she was young.
"I understand that it will most likely mean my going on to uni and I have no trouble at all with that. In fact I like the idea of learning all that I can about the field." Being a healer was her goal. Being a healer for creatures was where her heart lay and whatever she needed to do would be done. Even if she had to move to another state or the other side of the world to attend the best uni in the field then she would do it. A small smile played around her lips as she lifted her hazel eyes to meet those of the man before her, "Whatever it takes Professor Draper. I'm going to do it."

James hadn’t brought up the competitive side in order to scare her off, so he was quite pleased when it didn’t. Besides, the green house was for the ambitious, yes? He listened as she explained further and nodded along when she mentioned University because that would most definitely be a requirement for someone planning to go into the field she had in mind. What she said last got a SMALL smile out of him.
”Good,” he nodded. ”That’s the proper attitude to have,” and though he didn’t like seeing cockiness within his students, this one didn’t seem to spill over in that bucket yet. He could tell by the way she was shifting in her seat. There was humility there. ”You’re in your… Fifth year, yeah?” Despite the fact that he pretended not to care, James actually did pay attention to who was in which of his classes. Couldn’t let them know, but he did care. Even if just a bit. ”It’s a pivotal year in regards to your future in this field.” She hopefully already knew that, but if not he wanted to stress the importance.
”You will need OWL scores of at least an E for Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, and Potions,” all courses which would help her in this process. ”And you will also want to choose at least two more elective classes to continue through NEWT level in addition to those three; I suggest Transfiguration as one.” Was she getting all that?
”It’d also be a good time to consider looking into other options to make your applications more competitive,” he nodded slowly. ”You’ve still got some time, but summers provide a great time to get some experience.” Maybe he could see about pulling some strings to get her an internship or something… If she wanted. However, he waited to see what she had to say about all of this, hoping that maybe she already had ideas of her own that would help her add an extra edge.

Was that a smile? It appeared to at least be a hint of a smile which was certainly something to be happy about. Something she had said made him happy in some way. Sitting up a little taller in her seat she kept her attention on the man sat across from her.
"Yes Sir, I am." Fifth year. One of the tougher years. OWLs to take and the time to really decide what she was going to make of herself. This was the year she needed to shine and show everyone what she was made of and she planned on doing just that. Hady was silently taking in what was being said to her giving a small nod of her head to show she was in fact very much listening and did understand what was being said to her. "It is and that's the main reason I'd like to get everything I need to do straightened out and started on." And she meant everything.
CoMC, Charms and Potions. Two of those three were already her top classes. That meant she just needed to push herself a little more in Potions. This she could do easily. As for electives the Slytherin was happy to hear James suggest Transfiguration and it earned a small grin from her. This wasn't a lesson she would be dropping at all as it went hand in hand with her other studies. "What other electives would you suggest I take in addition to Transfiguration?" He would know best, yes? How could it be to take these classes when she was currently taking them ALL anyhow?
And the heart of the conversation right there. This was in a small way why she was currently sitting right here. "My summer is currently completely open to anything that would help me get a step ahead in my goals. I don't exactly have anything specific in mind, I'm open to anything you might be able to suggest," she answered after just a moments pause. If he would be able to help her get that tiny step further she wouldn't be turning it down.

Yes, yes it was a hint of a smile. But she better not go around telling that to all her friends because then he could guarantee that it would be the only one she'd ever receive. In the short time that he had become a Professor here, he had already built a reputation for himself. One that he was planning on upholding. Unlike some pansy Professors like Poncho Paul, James demanded a sense of respect from his students. And he planned on keeping it that way.
"Then I hope it's safe to presume that you've already begun studying?" Of she was aware and all that. Though, James was one of those that studied at the very last minute so... Ahem. But even if she hadn't started yet, this would be a good wake up call. He wouldn't be disappointed either way. Just needed to stress the importance a bit. Plus, scaring them was always a good way of getting a point across.
Again, Hady didn't seem to be taken aback by the information he fed her. Instead of seeing her light dim, he only saw her brighten. It was also evident that her confidence rose as the conversation continued. He appreciated that. Adjusting his collar, James listened to her question, deciding it was one he liked and would therefore answer. "Other electives are entirely up to you," he considered it for a moment. "I believe there is a branch for healing if you were to consider continuing Runes, but it isn't as important as your healing charms and potions would be." Also fun. She should probably decide based on what she thought was fun. But this wasn't advice James was planning on voicing. Hopefully she knew to consider fun.
Her summer was empty? Perfect. That opened up the possibility for incredible opportunities. "Have you had the chance to look into any possible summer internships or job opportunities?" He also had a few he could present, but best see if she already had anything in mind. And as long as she continued to excel in his class the way she has been, then he wouldn't even mind passing on recommendations. "... Would this be something you're interested in?" The internships and jobs.
Needed to see if she even fancied the idea, y'know?

This wasn't a situation to take lightly and whatever suggestions or opportunities would come from this needed to be thought over.
For her OWLs? Heck yeah she had already started. "Yes, Sir," Hady replied with a firm nod of her head. When she wasn't in a lesson, doing homework, assisting a peer with something, or just enjoying some much needed down time on her own/with a friend or with Frankie she was studying. It's what she did.
Just so she continued to both take and excel in CoMC, CHarms, Potions and Transfiguration she could take any other classes she wanted. Certainly something to think about. Listening as James answered her question about other possible electives a tiny hint of a frown formed on her lips, just as fast as it come it was gone. Runes wasn't her best subject at all! In fact she wasn't really that good at it buuuuttttt Zeke would be take it. Surely he wouldn't mind if she had some questions about it all. "I have some considering to do then there. I'm not the best at Runes so I don't know if I'll be continuing with that one or not," she admitted quietly.
"No I haven't." At least not yet. How much was open for a fifth year really? If it had something to do with creatures and or healing though she would do it. When asked if it was something she was interested in she smiled nodding her head once more. "It would be, yes." Her father would understand if it was something that would help her career wise. An internship or a job in the right field could open up all the other doors she needed to achieve her goal.

James appreciated how attentive Miss Lynch was, though he wouldn't comment on it. He was grateful. Didn't have to waste any of his patience on her. It was refreshing and she ought to teach some of her fellow students one or two things about respect. Maybe she could even teach some of the Professors about it too. Merlin knew a few of them really needed it.
He was glad to see that she had already started studying as it put her in a good position. "Then you're already a few steps ahead of other Fifth Years," it was meant to be a compliment... As close as James would probably get to one. It took more than just one office visit and a few right answers to merit that sort of praise.
And her answer to his question regarding internships or summer jobs hadn't caught him by surprise. It was still early and most places wouldn't take anyone under their Fifth Year. However, Fifth Years themselves were perfect candidates. "I still have a few contacts from University..." he nodded, writing a note for himself on a spare piece of parchment. "I'll see what I can do," he gave her another small hint of a grin.
Twice now.
"Anything else you want to discuss?" He had done a lot of the talking here, which was a rarity in itself. He considered her briefly, wondering if she had any pressing questions they hadn't touched on.

Oh, was she now? Her studying habits had always been a little at a time. Slow and study reading over everything. Nothing got overlooked and things she needed to work on more got marked and checked up on at a later time. Hearing this though made her slightly more proud of herself and the light smile that graced her lips for a few moments was all showed this.
If bouncing about in her seat would've been something she could've gotten away with just then surely she would've been doing so. However this was important and Professor Draper was a 'tougher' man. One she wasn't about to anger when his help would get her further then anyone elses right now could. "That would be amazing Professor, thank you," she responded politely a warm grin tugging at her lips yet again this time she allowed it to stay. She was very happy with this.
Hmm. No, none that she could think of. "I don't believe so. Is there anything I should keep in mind or work on in order to further my chances in this career?" Anything at all. It didn't even matter what it was.

Yes she was. Most students didn't start studying until the night before. Didn't need any statistics to confirm it. Just a fact of life. James would know. He was a student once. Hardly managed any passing scores in his time. Which was to say, didn't mean the procrastination wouldn't come without a price. Those tests were brutal. So he was rather impressed that Miss Lynch had been off to an early start, though there was always potential that she had been lying. Only time would tell on that front.
Refraining from bouncing was a good idea. Lynch was smart. There was no doubt in that. "I can't make any promises," besides, he didn't do commitments anyways. "But I'm sure one of my contacts will have suggestions." Yeah, he knew people. No one who he'd be willing to reach out to from his Hogwarts' days, but there were plenty from Uni to reach out to.
"As long as you continue excelling in your coursework as you have been doing," he paused, "I see no reason as to why you wouldn't make a competitive candidate." The highest compliments coming from James Draper, okay?

Promises weren't needed. Just his saying he would look into it, make note or simply let someone know she what she was looking for was more then she could really ask for. This was a large step in the right direction and whatever assistance she could manage with moving forward would be very much accepted even if she wasn't one that liked help. "That's alright Professor, I really appreciate this." Truly she did.
Cue large smile! Hadleigh was incredibly happy right now. Why shouldn't she be? That was a compliment. A awesomely wonderful splendid compliment from a not always smiling happy type Professor. This day was glorious and nothing was going to dampen her mood now. "I will Professor." Promise. Nothing would cause her to mess this up. Nothing!
With all her questions asked and answered there was nothing more for her to do other then take her leave. Getting to her feet she smiled at James once more and hitched the strap of her bag up higher on her shoulder. "I'll leave you to your work now since I'm sure you were probably busy. Thanks again Professor Draper and your dog is really cute by the way." Hady glanced towards said doggy and even gave him a little wave. Cute thing he was.

He watched in amusement as he noted the change in her demeanor from the first few minutes when she had walked in. It was an interesting change. Her confidence had certainly skyrocketed and she was now emulating happiness. Qualities many others didn't leave his office with. Office visits were normally nasty little chores, James found.
This one, however, wasn't terribly unbearable. It was pleasant.
"I'll see you in class, Miss Lynch," he said with a nod before looking over at Merlin who looked entirely too smug. James gave him a single look to translate 'Oi, don't let it go to your head'. Stupid dog.

James wasn't exactly doing anything important, not yet. He had only just sat down with a stack of papers in one hand and quill in the other. Oh the constant joys of being a Professor. Just when he'd finish grading one stack, there was yet another pile that needed attending to.
It was a vicious cycle.
A vicious cycle with occasional interruptions like a knock on his door. Or three.
James was starting to notice a pattern with some of his students. Who knocked once. Who knocked twice. There were some that liked to keep a melody. Others who chose not to knock at all. It was starting to become a game now, seeing if he could name the face before even seeing it. As he considered who this possible visitor could be, he lazily flicked his wand over at the door and called, "Come in," not bothering to look outside.
OOC: Come play in our office pls thnx
Oh she most certainly would come in. At first, it was a very determined strut into the room. A walking method which was abruptly interrupted by how blooming cold it was in the office. Did the man know? Surely he did! After all, he'd worked in a jungle before, so one would think that he preferred the cold.
And to Amur, at the moment and with her head where it was, that could only mean one thing.....
In a second, her wand was in her hand and ready to be pointed at the Professor. It hadn't quite made it up to 'pointing-level' yet though, because really she wasn't entirely sure. And it was always a good idea to be entirely sure before facing off with any of the Hogwarts staff.
Her eyes narrowed, her lips pressed into a thin line and she scrutinized the man for all she, and he, was worth. To cast, or not to cast?
"What did I feed the augurey the first day we met?" HA! Take that Professor Impostor! Or should she say, Impostor Professor!

James was not a man easily caught off guard. He didn't jump at the sudden wand pointing, nor did he show any hint of surprise at the harsh accusatory looks. In fact, he only looked up when she posed her question.
A faint ghost-of-a-smilie graced his lips, whilst he debated whether or not to laugh out loud. He chose against it, however, it was tempting. "That's hardly any way to greet a Professor," he replied coolly. This particular student was among one of the more amusing Hogwarts had to offer. The Care of Magical Creatures Professor often prided himself on being able to read others easily, but Amur proved to be more of a challenge.
And yet again, he found himself wondering what exactly was going on in that complex mind of hers. He could practically see the gears in her head turning full force. "And I believe, attempt to feed would be the better question," he momentarily returned his gaze to the stack of papers, which he pushed to the side. This was far more interesting. "Not fans of celery, you see."

He wasn't even phased! Seriously, what was with this guy? Most Professors would be on their feet making all sorts of flailing hand motions and harsh statements. Professor Draper may as well just have said 'hey'.
It had Amur admittedly stumped for a moment, caught between indecision and a hard place. He seemed like the Professor she remembered, but then people could seem any way they wanted, couldn't they?
Her grip tightened on her wand and she tried not to shift. What eased her mind a little bit, was his answer. He was right. Attempt was totally the right word. Her lips worked in a moment of indecision, before she turned and shut the door behind her.
The wand stayed out though. She didn't know many spells, but she was full willing to bet that Draper wouldn't be so cool and collected as a cucumber if his desk suddenly turned into a dragon. Actually, that thought was highly tempting. She might get some quick, straight answers and cut around all the hedges that adults liked to put up.
Taking a few steps into the room, Amur eyed the man very carefully. "What was I wearing on my feet the first day we met?"
Maybe she should ask if he thought she was 5'5" or pushing 5'6" too?

Why had she been so nervous about coming here? Now that the 'meeting' was over Hady really couldn't figure out what her problem had been before. It all turned out nicely. Better then nicely in fact. If all things went well she could very well have some type of internship or even a small job this up coming summer. Things were wonderful.
With another light smile Hady nodded her head in return. "Yes Sir." No doubt about it she would be in class. Now it was time for her to continue on and return to her studies. One more glance to the dog and she was gone having walked out of his office.

Was his answer not good enough? He raised a single brow, watching her. The way she scrutinized him with her eyes said it all. There was something incredibly taxing going on in that head of hers and James couldn’t exactly pin point what it may be. But whatever it was, was amusing.
He watched her carefully as she stepped further into the room. Her moves were very calculated and his could be too. However, he remained as calm as ever. Like this was the way most of his students chose to greet him. He was sure that the calmer he stayed, the more annoyed she’d grow. It was a very amusing game they were playing here.
”Was my first answer not satisfying enough?” he watched her. Of course this answer was even easier than the first. Barefoot. It was her nickname now, after all.

Nice kid,' he thought now turning his attention back to the pile on his desk. It was one of the more pleasant office visits this term. Most of them were like pulling teeth, but this was easy and to the point. He could use more of them.
The door shut behind her and once again he was left to grade papers. Joy.

Amur stopped in her tracks. Her eyes narrowed. Her nostrils might have flared a bit. What he didn't see was the cold sweat that trickled down her spine.
She should have brought back-up. Why had she not brought back up?
Silly, foolish child.
She straightened her own, singular back. Held her wand a bit tighter. Spoke with all the calm courage she could muster. "Are you asking as a Professor, or because you don't know the answer?"

... So they were still at it then? Barefoot looked like she wasn't about to let her guard down anytime soon. And as amusing as this all was, there was clearly something bothering her. Her eyes, they said it all. The scrutinizing look, as if she felt threatened.
And though he couldn't see the cold sweat that was trickling down her spine, he could see how alert she stood. A tiger ready to pounce. If she had fur, it would be standing upright.
He was still amused, but not entirely anymore. There was real concern she was feeling here and he felt a trickle of it too. So he raised his brows, leaning back easily in his chair. "As a Professor, I'm glad to see you chose to wear shoes this time." He nodded at her feet. "You got off easy in the barn. And here you had me thinking I'd have to write you up for violating dress code again."
So to answer her previous question: She wasn't wearing anything on her feet when they first met.
So she could stop gripping her wand like that. Thing ought to break with that tight of a hold.

See, that wasn't really an answer. It was a bit like beating around a bush with a broom. He hadn't answered her direct question, and Amur was of the mindset of letting him know just as much. However, technically, his answer was right and there wasn't much that she could hold onto in that regard.
A discontent huff let her and she averted her eyes briefly. Her hold only tightened on her wand. Determination seeped into her and she returned her gaze to meet his eyes as levelly as she could manage. "Write me up, or boil me in a stew?"
That's right. She still wasn't entirely convinced this wasn't the hag in hiding. After all, there were things called pensives, weren't there?
