"Where are you guys?" Kitty had lost her worms. This was terrible! This morning they had been with her when she was heading to class but when the day was over they were gone. She was retracing all her steps, starting with the last she had seen them - the staircases.
Kitty got down on her knees and began crawling down the stairs, not noticing that they were about to move...

Rachel was on the fence about the Moving Staircases. On one hand they were pretty handy when it came to getting from floor to floor and if one were in a hurry but on the other, they were quite exasperating. Fortunately, she was in no hurry today and had the leisure of taking whichever floor the Staircases would take her.
However, this idea was abandoned at the sound of one Kitty Valentine's voice. Who was she looking for? Rachel approached the older girl. "Kitty? Whom did you loose?" Perhaps she could help. Oh no! They staircase they were standing on was about to move! Rachel grabbed onto the rail for safety, her eyes still curiously on her friend.

Kitty clutched the railing to avoid falling over the stairs started to move. Then she turned at the sound of someone calling her name."Hi Rachel. Have you seen my worms? I lost them this morning when I was on the stairs and I can't call them back because the magic keeping them alive expired." They were the clay familiars she had made in Transfiguration - her real worms were back at home. Kitty stood and brushed her robes off. "Probably would have found them by now if the stairs weren't moving so much. What floor are you trying to get too?"

Worms? Did Kitty really say worms? Rachel was not remotely afraid of worms. No, on contrary, she would sometimes play with them whenever she found them in soils. This was one princess who was not afraid to get dirty but she was surprised that Kitty owned the little wriggly creatures. The mention of the spell left her curious. “What spell is that?’’ She had no inking that these were fake worms.
The younger Eagle, still clutching to the rail, swept her eyes in all directions slowly and carefully as she tried to spot the worms. “Yes, the staircases do foil your attempt to find them. If only one of us could perform the Summoning Charm, we could have Summoned them.’’ This would have made things much easier. “Oh, none in particular. I was wandering the Castle and decided to go wherever the stairs took me.’’

"It was the spell we learned in Transfiguration: Piertotum Locomotor Annexus," said Kitty in reply to Rachel's question. "The original spell wore off after two days but I animated them again by cutting a small lock of my hair off. I didn't want to cry again. I just wish there WAS a way to make it permanent. I love my hair and I'm not going to keep cutting it off, and no way I'm going to start spitting on my beautiful worms." She sighed, but then her eyes widened as she caught sight of something on one of the flights of chairs.
"Ooh Rachel look!" She pointed down two flights of chairs. "There my lovelies are right there!" All three of her clay worms were laying in a corner on one of the moving stairs. Perhaps they fallen out of her pockets and some student walking by had put them in a pile in the corner over there.
"Accio Familiars!" While she waited for the spell to work she turned to Rachel and asked curiously, "What was your familiar? Do you still have it around?"

Oh. Now Rachel fully understood. "Mine wore off too even though we used tears. I had hoped that the magic would have lasted a little longer because the Professor said that tears were the strongest.'' She nodded. "I wish that too. I've tried researching to find out if it could be everlasting but I found nothing.''
Rachel inclined her head over the side of the rail to peer down to where Kitty was indicating. "Lovely! I'm glad you found them. Now if only this staircase would deposit us to the right floor, we could nip over to that particular flight of stairs.'' She gave a questioning look at the stair she and Kitty were presently standing on as though hoping for it listen to her request.
Would the Summoning Charm work? The girl peered over to the side again to check. "Oh, it was an Eagle. I made it to symbolise Ravenclaw. I do have it but it's in my dorm. I didn't put the spell back on it since class, though. You know, you should get some real worms if you like them so much.'' She had no inkling that Kitty already had some at home.

"An eagle. Cool! Could it fly?" Kitty found the idea of a flying familiar to be pretty cool, though she didn't know if clay familiars could do that. Hers were worms so obviously she hadn't asked them to fly. "After the next Transfiguration class I'm going to ask about making the spell permanent." She remembered that Haddie had asked that same question right after they had animated their familiars, but she hadn't heard the answer if there had been one.
"Oh I do have worms," said Kitty excitedly as Rachel asked her why she didn't have worms. "I have a whole colony, but are just back at home. I don't think I'm allowed to bring worms to school, and I didn't want anyone to accidentally bump into their container and knock them down. But I think I'm going to ask for permission to bring them next term, because my mom REALLY hates having to take care of them after she comes back from work at the Ministry. She doesn't love worms as much as I do." Kitty sighed as she said that, not understanding how anyone could not like worms. "So next term I could keep them in their container by my bed and forbid anyone from touching it unless they asked permission. I'll ask Professor Kitridge for permission next time I go to the library. Think he'll say yes?"
At first her spell was working: all three familiars flew threw the air towards her. One of them went much faster than the others and she caught it in midair, but then the other two faltered and crashed back towards the stairs.
"Um...I'm still learning that spell," replied Kitty in embarrassment to Rachel.

Kitty seemed excited about the prospect of Rachel's familiar flying and the brown haired girl was pleased that she could answer the question positively. "Indeed it could. I had asked it to hover for a bit and it did so quite easily. But I didn't ask it to fly about because I was afraid it would soar away.'' She bobbed her head. "I think there are a set of us who would like that spell to be permanent.''
The girl wasn't very startled when Kitty revealed she already possessed worms. She listened with great interest about the said wriggly creatures. "You must miss them.'' She and her friend were in the same plight- they had left their beloved creatures behind at home and aimed to seek permission to bring them next term to Hogwarts. "I think he will as long as you're careful with not leaving them in anyone's way. Or perhaps you'll have to keep them in the barnyard; it could go either way.'' She smiled again. "I would like to meet your worms.''
Wow! Kitty had actually made progress with the Summoning charm. "You have nothing explain,'' Rachel said, leaning over to look at the worms that had fallen. "I haven't made any progress with it at all. Look.'' She aimed her wand in the worms' direction. "Accio worms.'' Nothing happened but that was to be expected even though she had spent some of her time practicing that and a small amount of other spells that were above her level. She had a feeling that practicing them would come in handy for the Dueling Club.

"Cool! Tonight can I see it? If that's okay I mean," Kitty added the last part hurriedly. Seriously though, a flying familiar was awesome.
"Yeah I miss them every day. You're right I could keep them in the barn." Honestly she hadn't thought of the barnyard before now, but it did sort of make sense. Back at home she kept her container near the window in her bedroom so that the worms could retreat to the darkness of the soil but at the same time get the nutrition from the sun they needed. If she kept them by the window in the Ravenclaw tower someone might accidentally bump them and break the container. "When I bring them you can be the first to meet them. There are nine of them in all and they all have names. You're going to love them Rachel, I know it." She wasn't going to tell her their names now - they could be named properly when she introduced them.
She felt her embarrassment go away when she saw Rachel not being to perform the summoning spell. It felt good to know she was at or around the same level with at least one of her friends on magic. "I've been trying to learn new spells for my next duel," she told her.
Just then the stairs began to move towards the landing where Kitty's other two familiars were.

"Of course, Kitty. You're welcome to come over to the first year dorm. Or if you're too busy, I can bring it over to yours.'' Rachel didn't mind a bit about showing Kitty her familiar nor making the short trek to the second year dorm.
Rachel nodded. She wanted Kitty's worms to be safe and sound and was pleased the other girl agreed about the barn. "You can visit them everyday and I can go with you if you like.'' She would love checking in with the wriggly creatures ever so often. "I can't wait to meet them, Kitty. How can you tell them apart enough to name them? Do they all look a tad different form each other?''
The younger eagle smiled. "So have I. I've been mainly trying second year spells and I have had some progress with them.'' Sometimes it would take her days or even weeks to master one. "Perhaps we could practice together sometimes. It would be more fun and I'm sure we could use some encouragement from each other.''
She continued to hold onto the rails as the stairs moved once more. "You'll have those worms back now,'' she said, peering over at them.

"You can tell the difference between them depending on their size and where they are segmented on. But still it can be confusing and sometimes I mix them up." Kitty felt thrilled that Rachel was so interested in her worms.
She nodded when Rachel suggested practicing together."Yes we totally should practice together. What spells do you know? My favorite spell is Cantis, but I haven't ever practiced it on anyone other than myself so I don't know if it would work."
The stairs stopped moving then and Kitty got off to bend down and retrieve her familiar worms. Thankfully neither one of them had been damaged from people stepping on them, in fact it seemed as if someone had pushed them to the side where they would be safe. She got back on the stairs afterwards so she could continue accompany Rachel to her destination and keep talking in the meantime.

"Do you have nay pets at home?"
Oh! This made perfect sense, the way Kitty knew how to tell her worms apart. Rachel pictured in her head what her friend was describing and reasoned that though it was an excellent way of differentiating the worms, the method would still have its disadvantages. "Will you teach me how to recognise them? Also their names?''
"That's the spell that makes persons sing, yes? I have never tried it but you're welcome to try it on me sometime.'' Rachel was quite happy to help a friend out. "I know the Fire Making Charm. I've practiced that one quite a bit. The Bluebell Flames spell as well. I could show you if you like, if you're not able to do either one as well as you would like.''
The younger Eagle watched as Kitty retrieved her worms. "Are they all there? Unhurt?'' Of course they weren't real worms but they were obviously very precious to Kitty. "Yes, I do. I have a Jack Russel Terrier named Barkley. He's only about three years old. I can show you a picture of him.''

"Yep, Cantis makes you sing. It's actually a really funny spell, much safer than most dueling spells because you can't get hurt. It's not like being thrown backwards or being lifted up by the heel or anything. I can teach you to do it if you want." Kitty would definitely have preferred if her opponent at the last match had used Cantis on her than that tickling spell which he did. "I can't do the Blue Fireball Flames or the Fire Making Spell, no. What are they like?"
Kitty held up the three familiars in her palms to show that they were okay. "They are okay, thankfully. With so many students coming up and down the stairs I was worried that someone might step on them and damage them but someone moved them out of the way so they are fine." She smiled when Rachel mentioned having a Jack Russel Terrier. "Dogs are so adorable! I'd love to see Barkley." She never had a dog but she knew that most people did, including her neighbor who had a Pomeranian.

"What lovely names!'' Rachel was impressed by the names chosen for the wriggly creatures. "Elsa and Anna, I assume, are from the movie 'Frozen'.'' Without a doubt he had watched and re-watched the movies countless times. Olaf happened to be her favourite.
She thought over the effects of the Cantis spell. "I think you're absoloutely right. I'm always worried about hurting my friends but this is quite a safe spell. I will definitely use it and I would love for you to show me how to cast it properly.'' Rachel smiled gratefully. "Oh, they're just like other spells. You need to focus and practice before getting them perfect.'' It was obvious that she and Kitty could help each other out a lot in the way of spell work.
"That was awfully nice of that person.'' The younger Eagle examined the familiars a little closer. Yes, they seemed perfectly fine. "Did you name these too?'' She couldn't help but be extremely happy when Kitty showed interest in Barkley. "If I don't get to bring him next term, I can have you over at my house sometime and you can get to meet him then.''

"Thank you," replied Kitty smiling at Rachel. "Yes, Elsa and Anna are named after Elsa and Anna from Frozen. It's one of my favorite movies ever. Elsa is my role model."
"Exactly!" Kitty nodded as Rachel described not wanting to hurt anyone in the duel. It was cool that Rachel wanted to learn Cantis and that she wanted to teach Kitty the fire spells. "We could practice them this weekend if you wanted. Maybe in the room of requirement or outside since its getting warmer."
Good question. I didn't name my familiars yet but I'm probably going to. I'll have to think about it. Do you have any ideas?"
Kitty felt touched when Rachel said that she could come over to her house sometime in the future. No one had ever invited Kitty to their house, so Rachel doing that was a very big thing, even if she didn't know how much so. She tried not to show how touched she was though(not wanting her to know that no one had ever invited her to their house) and instead smiled and said, "I hope you are able to bring him to Hogwarts. That would be really cool. I'll try to convince the professor you'll be asking to let you take him at the same time that I'm asking about my worms."

Rachel smiled even more when Kitty said Elsa was her role model. She liked it very much that a princess was her friend's idol. "That's great! I think that's a great choice.'' But all the princesses would be perfect role models in her opinion. "Outside. How about somewhere out in the open but with not much students around? We wouldn't want to mistakenly hit them with any misaimed spells.''
"Belle and Sebastian are two names that immediately come to mind,'' the first year replied. She adored Belle because of her love for books and Sebastian the crab for his fussiness about following King Triton's orders.
Kitty seemed relatively pleased about the invitation to her house and Rachel decided that she would have her over one summer at least. Possibly all the girls of her dorm too. The poor girls. They would be bored to death because Rachel would talk a lot about and show them her cacti collection continuously. "Thank you. We can go see him together.'' Professor Draper was such a grump though. Rachel would not deny that she was worried about him agreeing.

"I agree, it should be somewhere out in the open where there are no students."
"Good names! Bella and Sebastian they are." They were good names for her familiars and Kitty liked that Rachel was interested enough to help name them, so that is what they would be named.
Kitty smiled when Rachel accepted her offer to see the professor together whom she was going to ask permission to bring her Jack Russel Terrier. "What professor are we going to ask?"
Just then the stairs stopped moving again. "Is this where you want to go?" Kitty had forgotten where Rachel said was heading.
Dante liked down on people from the moving staircase. Even dropping stuff on unsuspecting first years. Though they had to be ones he did not know because if they recognized him. It would be a pain. But alas he had nothing to throw on him at this moment. Also You would also think by this time people would realize they are on a moving staircase. But nope. Dante was just going to sit on this staircase and see where it goes.
He would busy himself with looking in his black notebook and jotting down how much money he owed people and watching people.
Yeah he was bored.

But nope. Hot, hot, it was just too hot.
Despite living in a castle, with it's draughty corridors and thick stone walls keeping the interiors shady and cool, Daxton found himself seriously overheating yet again. It was that time of year when everyone flocked to the grounds to soak up the sun, which was good for Daxton as there was not a chance he was going out there, and therefore had the empty corridors more or less to himself.
Which would be good if it was not so hot. Daxton knew he was oversensitive to the heat, he knew he felt it more than a lot of people did, but it still seemed strange to him that he was the only one Suffering.
Suspicious.
It was actually the heat that had brought him to the moving staircase. Here, he could sit and let the stairs move him around, perhaps generating some sort of breeze without his having to move an inch. It had taken him far too long to find it, thanks to the way the staircase refused to stay in one place, and when he did, there was an older boy already there.
Well, whatever. With a huff, Daxton flopped down onto the step a short way away from the older boy, keeping an eye on him as the staircase moved them around the large hall.

It was a little hot. But that only made Dante realize that it was getting closer and closer to Summer and that meant OWLs and well after that. He would be visiting people and that was going to be fun. Then maybe go to the muggle toy shop. But enough about that since it was getting kind of hard not to realize he had company on his step or close enough step. Whatever, he was close enough to Dante for him to take notice. Plus he could feel eyes on him. Even if for a brief moment. It was always unsettling. But more because it was Daxton.
The boy who did not talk. Kind of hard not to know about someone like that.
"Daxton"
Dante greeted him nodding. No idea why he was here on the moving staircase But Dante did not really care about that.

Rachel smiled, pleased that Kitty thought that the names were good enough to name her familiars. They were indeed good names. "I think Professor Draper would be the one to ask.'' She looked at Kitty with a slightly mellow expression on her face. Professor Draper didn't exactly exude the friendly vibe like Professors Hirsch, Ansley and Myers and Mr Kitridge, the staff members of whom she was fond of. "Let's go now if you haven't got anything to do.'' The earlier they asked, the quicker she would have an answer.
She held onto the rail as the staircase came to a standstill. "Not really but it will do.'' Rachel gracefully moved from the stair and onto the corridor. "Still have your familiars, Kitty? Then let's go see Professor Draper.''
