First person mentioned in the thread title is the first person to start off the duel.
Cornelius was SO pumped! He had not ingested as much sugar as he had last time. Only five sugar quills this time around, but it was enough to get him up and bouncing. And that's exactly what he did while he waited for the duel to start. The curls atop his head bounced like springs as he hopped on the balls of his feet. He would stretch his hamstrings occasionally, sticking his leg out and leaning forward; switching between legs to warm them both up. He would also do small arm exercises to get the blood flowing there.
He. Was. Ready. HISS!RAAAAAAAAWR!
Just like last time, Cornelius made a little prayer of sorts in his head. Please, PLEASE help him win. It'd be mighty awful if he had to tell his dad to buy a cow to simply shame it.
Oh, hey, Jaemin! Cornelius waved at him from across the arena, a great big smile on his face. He was going to get to duel his first bud, how awesome was that?! The youngest Baltazar bowed, just like his mum had taught him; duel etiquette, y'know? And off he went, his mind switching gears, the things and skills he's recently learned from his older mates and what his mumma has taught him coming to the front lines of his mind.
This time it was someone he actually knew. Jaemin wasn't excited at the prospect of dueling someone he knew, but... he'd gotten a new friend out of Haddie the last time around, so what could really happen? It wasn't like Cornelius could like him less or something, just for a duel. Right? The small boy bounced himself to where he was supposed to be and returned the bow before immediately getting himself ready for whatever would be coming.
He knew he couldn't underestimate the tall boy. He'd watched some of the duels from the last round, which... had been rather helpful, actually. He sorta had some idea how certain people would react to things now, at least... not everything, and of course people weren't that easy to predict, but he had some guidelines and stuff now. So when Cornelius went right into it, so did Jaemin, biting his lip before yelling "Protego!" because tickling definitely got a no from him!
The spell hit the shield that sprang up, just barely in time, and dissipated; the small boy looked at it with wide eyes for a fraction of a second before firing back with a Stinging Hex. It had worked in the last duel, why not in this one, hm? Sorry, Corny!

Cornelius' heart fluttered in nervous excitement. It was coming...it was coming...it..was...coming and--"PROTEGOOO!" A shield was produced in front of him, his fingers tingling from the stellar connection between him and his wand. It was AWESOME. Gosh gosh. A smirk slowly pulled at his lips. He was DEFLECTING Jaemin's hex, that way while the hex rebounded right back to his friend, Cornelius took opportunity to shoot another spell. That's what his older mates told him. SHOOT SHOOT.

He had sooooo learned enough about rebounds from shield spells to have come to expect them sometimes, and this was one of those times. He wasn't surprised at all, Corny! Not at all! Jaemin ducked to one side with a quiet gasp, getting out of the way just in time, and thank Merlin for th-
Oooooof.
The trip jinx had come right on the heels of the rebounded spell, and Jaemin's own momentum from moving turned against him as he didn't have time enough to react to the spell. The small boy's eyes widened again, this time in a bit of horror as his ankle suddenly seemed to snag on something rather invisible; he stumbled, trying to keep his balance, and did his best to keep his wand pointed in Corny's direction. A barrage of loud, bright purple firecrackers exploded out of his wand toward the tall boy before the little Slytherin hit the floor.
And now there were loud firecrackers heading his way. For a split second it reminded him of Johnathan and his love of firecrackers. Had Cornelius not been exposed to them or loved them just as much as his brother-from-another-mother, he'd be scrambling away at the sound of it, just like his sister Yvanna had that one time John almost set her hair on fire on accident.
Cornelius was standing his ground. His feet stayed planted on the ground in which he stood, wand firmly gripped in his left hand. Green eyes never left the purple spark, and for a moment, Cornelius could have sworn he smelled them before his Shield went up, deflecting the sparks back at Jaemin. Maybe this was a signature move that was budding to life, or maybe he was just getting used to having to opportunities to hit back. Whatever it was, Cornelius has that little urge in him to have more opportunities.
And he took them when he saw them.
The purple sparks headed back to his friend (thanks for sharing, but no thanks), a bead of sweat running down the side of his face. Woooh! This was a tough duel! He was breaking a SWEAT. The youngest Baltazar struck back, yelping a loud, "Colloshoo!" RAWR!HISSSS!

If the small Slytherin knew more than a few very mild swear words, he would have used them when his purple firecrackers came flying back at him. As he was already on the floor, Jaemin rolled himself to one side swiftly; narrowly avoiding the rebounded spell, he used the movement to roll himself onto his feet again, thin chest rising and falling a bit quickly as he threw up his wand and yelped "Protego!" at the call of another spell.
This time it was his turn to send Corny's spell flying back at him. Frowning deeply as it flickered back off the shield, the short boy immediately shifted himself to cast again, his voice coming out quiet and determined as he cast a swift "Incarcerous" after the rebounded spell. He'd been working on that spell since the previous duel, because he hadn't felt secure enough in knowing it to actually use it. But now he did, and hopefully it managed to catch one of Corny's long body parts. One of the spells had to hit, right?!

Cornelius was NOT going to get stuck to the floor by his OWN spell. What a disgrace. He'd even shame Mustard the lizard if he let this atrocity happen! A shield came up, negating the spell once more. Just stay still for a little while, Jaemin. It'll be okay. :3
That was one thing down, there were ropes heading his way now. Cornelius' eyes bulged from their sockets, surprise marring his cherub face. Nooooooooooo! There was no time to block that one so the boy ROLLED onto the floor, avoiding the ropes by a smidgen. A freaking SMIDGEN. His hear pounded in his chest.
BRING IT ON TINY FRIEND. HISS!RAWR!HISSSS!

This was a duel that had him on the edge.
Why? Because he had a rather soft spot for both of the participants.
The man watched eagerly as both parties took to the arena and started casting spells towards one another. Huh, there were a lot of shield charms going around, weren't there? Was this a speciality? A go-to spell? Maybe there wasn't a belief that a strong defence is a good offence. Maybe.
He still paid close attention to the two first years' fighting styles up until the last minute. Once the time had passed, the shield, as always, went up to indicate that it was over. Along with that, he approached the two boys and cast a simple 'Finite Incantatem' to get rid of those pesky lingering effects that no one needed. "Well done! Well done both of you. That was an excellent duel." Really. "But there can only be one winner and so, I congratulate you, Mr Baltazer, for taking the lead in this round. And well done on putting up a good fight, Mr Song." Smile!
