Once the pairings had been posted Maggie had been weirdly looking forward to this duel. That wasn't weird right? Wanting to face your boyfriend in a duel? And the reigning champion in their age group at that? Nah. Totally normal. What was also totally normal was that she had to put a LOT of effort into not bouncing on the spot once she'd entered the arena.
Totally normal.
With her wand drawn, she walked over to Zeke and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek (not even Flamsteed could object to that RIGHT???). "Told you I'd hex you some day." She whispered in his ear with a soft giggle before taking a few steps backwards. Could she curtsey instead of bowing? Probably not. So she did the latter, sending Zeke another smirk.
Hi boyfriend.
Once they were both ready to go, Maggie immediately grabbed her wand more tightly and sent a Tickling Hex Zeke's way. "Titillando." Nonverbals would come later maybe. She was going to surprise him with those. She'd been practicing too. Now, was he going to be surprised by how she'd beat him to the first spell? Or was he being a gentleman about all this?
Was she going to win? Was he going to LET her win?

He hated this. He was dreading it, and his stomach was in knots already.
From the moment the pairings were released, Zeke had been trying to think of a way to avoid this, but to no avail. A part of him had hoped Maggie might forfeit, or somehow convince Hirsch to switch with someone else. Like, he didn't want to curse his girlfriend, it wasn't his style and he was sure Maggie wouldn't appreciate it either. It wasn't to say he didn't value the challenge that she set for him (though really she would hardly be competition), but he would have preferred NOT to open the tournament in this way.
Circe help him.
The thing he feared most in all of this, was hurting her. Winning was his only option, he simply had to make sure she remained safe in the process. Somehow's Dot's warning kept coming back to him. Fire though, would not be on the cards for him today.
With a solemn expression dominating his features, Zeke entered the arena and approached Ma-----
--ggie. He hadn't been anticipating the kiss, but he'd returned it nonetheless. "Make it a good one," he replied, actually hoping she would. He'd deserve it. It was strange to see her so... okay with this, considering he was NOT okay with it. Reflecting on this, Zeke bowed in her direction - his wand slicing through the air with his movement.
While he had his training to give him an edge, he couldn't afford to be distracted, so with a little effort he tried to ignore the fact that Maggie was his girlfriend and instead poised himself to defend. Why? Simply because he had no interest in being the first to make an offensive move.
When her first hex came at him, he was ready, but surprised. She really did want to hex him... and there was little that he considered worse than the Tickling Hex.
"Protego!" he cast, deflecting the spell to the blonde.
Still there was no real offensive move of his own, save for the deflection, instead he opted to remain prepared. The match strategy he was adopting today was still yet to be determined.

But he was quick enough to deflect the spell back to her it seemed and while she could have easily cast a shield, Maggie chose to duck instead. Quickly taking a few steps to make sure she was always on the move (because like, moving target and all that you know), she smirked at him. She was also readying herself for a counterattack from his side but....there was nothing.
Nada.
Zeke didn't cast an offensive spell. What did that mean? Did that mean he was scared to attack her? Or was he simply waiting for her to exhaust herself before attacking her once she was weak? Was all of this some thoroughly planned out tactic or was he simply worried? He hadn't looked AS excited about this duel as she felt. Hmm. Interesting.
Still holding up her wand in case he DID choose to attack after all, Maggie blew him a kiss before sending a non-verbal Everte Statum his way. Let's see what he was going to do with that now. Unfortunately, seeing as she was still practicing her nonverbals (thank you, Cox & thank you, Dima) the spell wasn't quite AS strong as she would have hoped but it was effective nonetheless.

It didn't sit right with him, not acting, not attacking... but it would have felt worse had he done so.
Sigh.
His struggles were real.
Thankfully Maggie was quick, and somehow he couldn't help but smirk at the way she ducked and kept moving. She was moving, yes, but she would tire eventually if she kept it up.
But then she was blowing a kiss to him? How cheeky of her. Knowing full well that he was going to get hit with SOMETHING, Zeke raised his free palm to catch her kiss regardless. He could take a hit or two, if it meant not feeling like a complete troll for what he could potentially do in his own time.
The non-verbal was a nice touch though, because while he saw her wand movement he had little idea what was actually coming for him. The urge to dive out of the way was real, but all he could manage was turning to the side so his back would absorb the impact... and what an impact. Being launched forward, Zeke managed to land on the curve of his arm and instead used the momentum to roll to his side and spring himself to his feet - which was a preferred alternative to face-planting.
Unable to keep himself from flexing his wand muscles, Zeke fired off two spells in quick succession making sure to keep his voice low and steady. "Obscuro, Expelliarmus," he cast, aiming first at her and next at her wand.

Maggie was torn between feeling concerned and smug as she watched her spell hit Zeke. Like, on the one hand she had managed to catch him off-guard but on the other hand he was also hit by a spell. Which he mastered very well, by the way. That roll was very impressive. Like, it was obvious he'd been practicing that. She was going to have to compliment him on-
HEY!
She'd sort of gotten used to him NOT attacking so when she suddenly found not one but TWO spells headed her way, Maggie was...surprised to say the least. Which also meant that her reflexes were a little off. Her "Protego!" came a little belated so when she suddenly felt herself BLINDED (or, yk, blindfolded) she could only stand completely still and wait for the impact of the second spell.
Only it didn't come.
Apparently her shield had come just in time. "Finite." Maggie muttered, pointing her wand at her own face and successfully ridding herself of the blindfold. Okay. This was war. Or was going to be. Once she'd got her bearings again. Taking a few steps to the right, she narrowed her eyes at Zeke.

He had been training indeed, so yes thank you for noticing, Maggie. In fact, between his own efforts, Sabel's from the previous year and summer, and Hirsch's recent tuition... well he was doing quite well, considering. It wasn't taking him long to warm into the duel now, especially seeing as how Maggie wasn't hurt yet. It made him believe he could avoid it all together, and still win. It was all about strategy, and now he had one.
The honeymoon period was over, sorry Maggie.
Zeke's hope was to disarm Maggie, claim her wand and be done with this show, but she was too good for that, but too slow for his initial hit. Capitalising on her distractedness, Zeke swiftly followed up with another assault on her senses, an important one at that. "Silencio." Though, it could potentially mean trouble for him, seeing as it appeared she too had been practicing - though her spell work seemed to be the focus of it. But he still had sight to determine what she was doing. The thing about non-verbals though, was that they were unpredictable if not mastered, and she couldn't have mastered the art that quickly. Hopefully. Maybe.
Taking his own advice, Zeke's strategy was to disarm, disable and confine... only going about it in a slightly different order. Disabling seemed a good way to give himself the opportunity to disarm more effectively. After all, he didn't want to use too much force. Not to mention, so long as she absolutely disarmed, he'd win so confining her wouldn't be necessary... but it would be fun.

"Protego!" Her shield had almost faltered already but was back up just in time to deflect Zeke's other spell. He was trying to finish this as quickly as possible, wasn't he? But they were only just starting to have fun. And by fun she meant....well, not fun really. Because right now it had occurred to her that based on experience and practice Zeke was a LOT better than she was. He also appeared to have a tactical advantage.
Tactic. Right. She needed one of those.
Still just kind of circling Zeke with her wand in her hand, Maggie thought about possible moves. Which was kind of difficult too. Mostly because she was (a) a bit irritated now and (b) because it was Zeke. Actually it was mainly (a) now. At least he hadn't tried one of the embarrassing spells on her yet. No, but he wouldn't right? He wouldn't want to see her with like boils on her face or something, right?
No, he definitely wouldn't.
Which did pose an interesting question, though. What WAS Zeke ready to do to win this duel? Honestly, she didn't know. And this uncertainty made it even more difficult for Maggie to figure out what he was going to do next. She'd watched him duel. She knew him pretty well. Yet still, she wasn't sure what his next move would be. All she could do was provoke him somehow.
"Bombarda!" She directed the spell at the ground before Zeke's feet.

Quick, she was quick, and he was only just quick enough jumping out of the way of her deflection. He could have copped it, he knew he could have copped it, but relying on non-verbals was a pressure he could live without... he still had to play this right.
It was funny, how Maggie moved, keeping herself agile and training her wand on him - which he also did in return. Though if there was one thing he learnt from last tournament, was that there was being on ones feet, and there was falling over ones feet... and he had done enough of the latter to realise the difference. Face planting the floor was not something he was going to repeat this year. As such, he was curiously assessing Maggie, wondering what he next move might be. Would she give him antlers? Make him belch up slugs?-- he really hoped not, because those were foul and he was still expecting kisses after this.
What he didn't expect, was for her to try to blow him off his feet, but he managed to side-step a few paces just in time to miss the unsettling feeling of the imapct. The floor to the side of him kicked up in flecks and scattered around him. Like, she just destroyed that part of the floor... he was impressed.
Okay Maggie, we'll play.
Game on.
"You're cute when you're like this," he called out, he was of course serious... but he was also aiming to put her off her game. Because she had game, obvs.
To let her know she was playing a dangerous game, egging him on like that, Zeke sent her a warning in the form of lovely red flares, "Perciulum!" he cast, following that up swiftly with the Confundus Charm, "Confundo!"
Messing with her head was something he didn't want to do, so selfishly he hoped she would defeat it, and maybe defeat him. Or not, but... the idea was there.

Maggie wasn't surprised he managed to dodge her deflected spell. Moreover, she'd expected (or hoped) that he wouldn't be hit by her Bombarda either. Like. That would've been dangerous and she'd deliberately directed the spell at the floor and not at him. Not only might that have seriously hurt him but she would've also probably been disqualified.
So no..that was just to see what he'd do.
Cute? She was cute when she was like this? Maggie probably proved exactly that by poking her tongue out at him. But apart from that he didn't get any kind of reaction from her. Nothing. Because she was busy focusing on his wand. To see what he'd do next. If her choice of spell had had ANY sort of effect on his next move. Maybe he'd be a bit more-
What was that?
Red sparks? Maggie was SO confused (and his next spell hadn't even hit her yet) when all he did was make his wand emit red sparks. Like how was that useful? And why was he-? Oh. "Prot-" She'd been so surprised by his first spell that she didn't really see the second one coming and it hit her square in the chest.
...
.......
.........
Maggie blinked. And again. And again. Like. What was...where was she? What was....happening? What was she doing here? Also where was here? And why was she holding her wand? Closing her eyes she tried to focus and remember but...just couldn't. Like ???? Once she opened them again she noticed Zeke. Zeke she recognized. Zeke. She was dating him. He could probably help. Maybe he could explain.
So she did something that was probably the worst move ever in a duel: She walked towards Zeke. Until she was close enough to hug him.
Hi, please help?

She really was the cutest, which was why it pained him to be in this... conflict with her. Perhaps Sabel had been right... perhaps he would have to have his butt kicked and lose, for her. It would only be for her. But then, what kind of person would he be? For throwing a match? Or more to the point, for not giving it his all? He was still torn, so her tongue-poking was like a little stab wound to his chest before he watched her expression turn blank... and then grow confused.
It hit.
...
Zeke held his breath for a moment. Under normal circumstances, he'd have attacked again by now, thrown everything he had at them, ended it swiftly and with force. But... it was Maggie, and he couldn't do that. He wouldn't do that.
Furthermore, when she started walking toward him, all he could do was watch, regretting in-part, his actions. The only solace he had in this was that the spell would wear off, and he could even remove it should it come to that...
... but arms. He loved her arms.
Instinctively he wrapped one of his around her too, but quickly swallowed the knot in his throat and pulled back just enough for him to do what he felt needed to be done.
"I love you so much..." he said softly, his wand moving to cast at her as he annunciated not one, but two incantations quickly and clearly. "Incarcerous, Expelliarmus."
It would all be okay, right? If he just held her... she'd be okay with it? With his... deception.

Ah yes she'd totally made the right decision. Zeke would protect her. He'd even put an arm around her. Good. Smiling when he said he loved her, Maggie pulled him a little closer. She did still have her own wand too but there was definitely a reason as to why she'd had it out in the first place. So...there was probably an attacker somewhere. Only where? And why couldn't she remember?
Also why was she not feeling QUITE as safe as she should have?
Not even when Zeke moved his wand and cast spells did she realize her mistake. That is until she found herself at the receiving end of said spells.
WHAT ON EARTH....?? WHAT WAS.....??? OH NO!
HOW DARE HE??????????????????????????????????
Finding herself without a wand and ability to move Maggie wriggled in Zeke's arm to get away from him. THE BETRAYAL! Along with her other current handicaps she also appeared to have lost the ability to form coherent sentences. So instead she just gaped at the Gryffindor and opened her mouth a few times, only to close it again a second later. That had been SUCH a low blow!

He felt AWFUL, really he did, but WHAT was he supposed to do? His hands were tied - not literally obviously, but this was an impossible thing. How does one spare thier SIGNIFICANT OTHER from physical and emotional pain and from humiliation, like, it was hard. He was doing the best he could here.
The look on his face was apologetic, and he knew that would count for squat, especially when she started wriggling out of his arm. Like... ouch much?
"I'm sorry! Maggie, I'm so sorry," he stated clearly, meaning it 110% "I didn't want to..."
WHOSE IDEA WAS THIS ANYWAY?! HIRSCH?!
It wasn't funny. It wasn't cool. It was sick. He was sick... god he was sick.
Zeke's gaze was locked on hers, the hurt in her eyes was difficult to ignore and impossible to avoid. He was done for. He knew it now... only instead of a verbal berating - which is the FIRST thing he expected, he got a swift kick to the shin. A good one too.

This duel was less of a duel and more of a dramatic episode of a soap opera. It had every element one could hope for in there: love, spells and deception. Gripping, wasn't it?
At first, he simply stood in the background with his eyebrows raised and praying to Merlin that they weren't going to turn this duel into, well, something else entirely. This was a duel, after all, and there was a Professor present. But it seemed that he didn't need to worry about that once they got into the duel and started fighting. Soon, however, Miss Traulton took the term a little too literally with the kick that sounded like it hurt. Hirsch winced.
Yeah, Zeke? You have some making up to do.
As for the duel itself, the time was up, which was probably lucky for Zeke. Merlin only knows what other kind of damage Miss Traulton would have done right then and there. The magical barrier went up between the two contestants and the man rushed forwards towards the Gryffindor. "Are you okay?"
Clearing his throat, the man straightened up and looked towards Miss Traulton. With a flick of his wand, the remaining effects were lifted so, you're free, Maggie. "You have a lot of fire in you, Miss Traulton. Well done on putting up a good fight. Really well done." He gave her a swift smile before turning to Zeke, where the smile turned into a proud one. "Congratulations, Mr Browne!" Need he say anything more?
