Gobstones Preliminary Match: Hufflepuff vs. Ravenclaw The building used for the Gobstones matches had had its doors closed against the early fall morning chill. Its surfaces magically dusted by Mr McLeod and Mr. Kitridge, the school's Gobstones sponsors and made ready for the term's first preliminary match. Mr Kitridge walked in with his hands stuck in his coat pockets against the brisk fall air, with Mr McLeod the schools groundskeepr and they together set up the hall for the first match lightening the fireplaces. On the way down from the castle Leo had seen the growing leaf piles under the trees. As the teams assembled Leo put his wand to his mouth to enhance his whistle to get the players attention. "Good morning and welcome to the Gobstones club, today's our first game of the season, I hope you're all as excited and geared up as I and Mr McLeod are!" Not waiting for any responses Leo quickly signalled for the teams to choose their representatives for the first shot of the game. "Let's begin!" The first players to step out with theeir houses respective shooters were first year Rachel Watson and fifth year Henric Nicolai. To cheers from the viewing area they released their marbles. The yellow marble rounded two obstacles before it lost all speed and stopped. No amount of cheers could get it to move. The blue marble surpassed its opponent and 4 more obstacles to claim the first points of the match. "First point of the Preliminary match goes to Ravenclaw!" Leo declared from the sideline. The badgers opted to switch players as Carl Leonard walked out on the court. Rachel Watson stayed for the eagle to complete a first year duel. The two released their marbles and watch them roll off side by side. They paced each other around the first 5 obstacles before the yellow marble swerved heavily to the right and stopped oozing out just a bit of smelly smoke. The blue marble surpassed its opponent and one more obstacle for the points. "2 points to Ravenclaw! Come on badgers!" Leo declared from the sideline. Neither team switched for the next roll as Rachel and Carl remained on the court with their houses respective shooters. Rachel seemed to have picked up some sort of luck with her next try with the shooter. She was getting her house's stone closer and closer to the Hufflepuff's stone, and the goal in extension. "3 points to Ravenclaw at the end of the first round. Ravenclaw leads 6-0 as we head into the second round! Come on badgers!" Leo cheered on. The badgers sent out fifth year Henric Nicolai again after the short break while the eagles relied on first year Rachel Watson. The duo swung their shooters and kicked their marbles forward in the court. The blue marble rolled around one obstacle without trouble but SMACKED nose first into the next one causing it to stop and ooze up a gush of smelly gob into the air and towards the spectators in the stands. Rachel left the court and handed over the shooter to another first year, Jace Reed. The badgers kept playing with Henric. The two boys swung their shooters and released their marbles simultaneously. The yellow stook picked up pace fast as it rounded obstacles but unfortunatley for the badger side it lost its speed just as fast and came to a stop just short of its next obstacle. The blue marble surpassed its opponent and barley made it around it next obstacle before it too stopped. "2 points to Ravenclaw!" Leo declared still wrinkling his nose at the gob stench still in the air.
