The front of the train is the perfect seat for those eager to see, be seen, and get to school FIRST. Avoid the Prefects' Compartment, unless you're looking for trouble, but there is plenty of seating available in these compartments.

There had been a lot of thought put into where Brooklyn had decided to look for a compartment to relax in for the ride back to London. At least she’d managed to get rid of any remnants of the poltergeists’ feast prank, but then there was a lot a change of clothes and one last bath could do. Either way, she made her way toward the front of the train as if none of that had happened, ready to curl up and occupy herself for the trip home. Besides, there were plenty of other things to think about that weren’t involving feathers or any of the other unfortunate incidents that had occurred over the term.
Choosing from the compartments was rather easier than she expected too, mostly because it appeared most people were stalling. She liked having first pick anyway, and soon enough she was curled up on a seat in an unoccupied compartment, stretching her legs out on the seat and leaning against the window. Time to pretend like irritations didn’t exist, and she pulled her book out and started reading. The other advantage to her position was that she could still keep an eye on the door, even if she wasn’t really looking straight at it. That way nobody could surprise her.

Eleven year olds ought to be lively, friendly and excited. However, Katherine was none of those. If her features weren't of a child, one would think that she was a 30 year old woman deceived by life, and the last part wasn't a lie, either: she had come to Hogwarts to supposedly attend the best wizarding school in the world, and yet her very first feast was completely ruined by a food fight. Then, her second feast was ruined by two poltergeists, and she had to spend both nights hungry. Moreover, she had managed to do about 0 of the things she had promised herself - being the leading points earner; having a few hardworking, good friends; making every professor know her name... she was a complete failure, but that was going to change next term. She had already finished studying the second year's History of Magic textbook and was onto the Potions now. Over the summer, she was going to finish all, and THEN everyone would see what she was capable of.
Hopping onto the train, she entered the first empty compartment she found and shut the door closed. She didn't want to be disturbed.

With her snacks from the trolley safely tucked away into the bag slung over her shoulder Hady made her way towards the compartments. All she wanted to do right now was find an empty one, set her bag down and let Hagan select a spot to sleep, the fluff ball in mention currently padding along at her side.
Peering into one or two of the first compartments and finding them taken she continued on. Sliding a door open and seeing this one empty Hady slipped inside letting the compartment door close behind her. Her bag was allowed to slide off her arm landing with a quiet 'thud' on the floor just beside the seats. Sitting down she stretched her legs out in front of her along the bench and leaned her head back on the wall closing her eyes.
It had been a looooooooong term. More things had taken place then usual and all she really wanted to do was relax for a few moments.

The thing was, Charlotte Kettleburn was a) not a mind reader and b) not particularly predisposed to NOT disturbing people. It was her GENERAL STATE OF EXISTENCE. She was LOUD even when she was quiet, and right now was no exception as she basically BURST into the compartment, and in a whirlwind, flopped dramatically in the seat opposite the first year.
PHEW.
PHEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
She had to unpack her TRAIN SUPPLIES. That meant candy (in packets that rustled annoyingly), a magazine (with shiny shiny pages), and best of all, a wind up radio on which she could listen to the WWN. EVERYONE LOVED THE WWN!
OOooooh an AGROMANTULA SONG! Charlotte hummed along and unwrapped the rustly wrapper of a particularly noisy piece of candy.

...?
Wasn't this THE girl who came late to the transfiguration class and cried over snails? Charlotte Kettleburn, second year Gryffindor. Katherine was annoyed by her the instant she BURST into HER compartment, but she didn't say anything... yet.
So, apparently, the first year HAD TO share HER compartment with this girl, because the said girl made no effort to ask for permission. On the contrary, the girl got comfortable: she turned on the radio and unwrapped a piece candy - no, not just any candy but a special one with an exceptionally annoying wrapping.
"Hi, yes, of course you can just barge in my compartment!" Katherine said with an edge in her voice and rolled her eyes dramatically.

OMG, it was finally time to go home! Yes, Ariadne had had one awesome first year at Hogwarts, but she was ready for a few months of relaxation and fun in the sun! She had no idea where they were going this summer, but surely it would be SOMEWHERE. They always did go on an exciting vacation. Sierra had said something about Hawaii when she had been a second year, so if there weren't already set plans, that was where Ariadne wanted to go! Her older sister had said it had been amazing!
After dropping off her luggage, she made her way further into the train. She had no idea who she was going to sit with, but she'd find someone. She knew way more people this train ride than she did the last one! She passed up a few crowded compartments and peered into the next one. It was a Hady! Hady was one of the SUPER COOL older snakes! Not seeing anyone else inside, Ariadne slid the door open and peeked her head in. "Feel like any company, Hady?" she asked, because some people really just like to ride alone.

She wasn't leaving, though. Snaily was.
Huh what? Char looked up and beamed then nodded in a casual sort of agreement.
"Of course I can. I'm a second year. You're just a first year. That's how these things work you know." She had a little brother and a little sister, she was a pro at this. And there weren't THAT many people in the school that were shrimpier than Charlotte, so she was very inclined to take advantage of that whole 'I am older' rule. BESIDES she was totally good company!
"Want some candy?" She asked THROUGH a mouthful of said candy. OMNOMNOM.

SPOILER!!: Ariadne

Not seeing anyone else inside, Ariadne slid the door open and peeked her head in. "Feel like any company, Hady?" she asked, because some people really just like to ride alone.
Eyes closed and head resting back against the window of the compartment Hady might have appeared asleep, only she wasn't. She would've liked to be honestly but what with all her summer plans coming into play really soon it was tough to focus on anything else. Just this first week of summer break alone had so much going on from dads wedding, to meeting with Adi to shopping with Lux. As it liked for her this was going to be an eventful break.
During the time the brunette had sat down and closed her eyes to the moment the compartment door slid open Hagan must've gotten himself onto her lap. Fingers lightly stroking the cats fur was enough to keep her relaxed. Well okay just the fact that OWLs were done was more then enough but this helped. A small voice pulled Hady from her thoughts her hazel eyes opening slowly looking to the girl peeking into the compartment. "Sure Ariadne, come on it," she responded with a light smile. She had no problem with company.
