Follow the Groundskeeper down the street from the Hogsmeade platform, over a shady, steep, rock path, and down to the shore of the Black Lake.
A fleet of magical boats bob gently on the dark, deep lake, waiting for your arrival. Four first-years per boat, please, and be careful not to tip over.
The Giant Squid might be looking for a feast tonight too.

One singular spasm of the corner of her left eye was the only response Julia gave, and it was an uncontrollable one at that. She most emphatically did not know Star Wars. She did not, no matter how much he might think otherwise. She didn’t even know what about what she’d said had triggered him to think so: calling out his cowardice? Maybe?
But she didn’t want to give any more consideration to it, and was saved from having to do so by Matt once again criticizing the first years’ method of transportation.

…there was something about the boats, wasn’t there? Something specific to Matt Solo, that made him want to run the other way. She watched his face as he called out to the other boy on the water, and how quickly his exuberance (she was getting a lot of use out of that word today) came and went depending on his looking at the boats before him.
If his dread had continued, she may have suggested asking the professor if they could go some other way, but then exuberant!Matt was back and dragging her towards the boats. Victory? And anyway, she had no problem with taking the time to carefully climb into a boat. She did not want to be ‘that kid who fell in the lake’, and if Matt didn’t want that title either so much the better.
Julia reached over and gave Matt Solo’s helmeted head a consoling pat pat, “You’re very brave.”
And she wasn’t going to say anything more about it.

He would NOT fall into that hazardous dark lake, so Matt held onto dear life his seat so tightly his knuckles were going white. "I'll get to you later." He casually told the yelling kids from the other boat. He was BUSY here trying to survive this boat trip.
Bleeeurghhh, he felt like puking again. This was terrible! Matt was looking forward to A FUN EVENING NOT A BLASTING BOAT. OH my Merlin, no, no blasting the boat, GOODNESSGRACIOUSME.
Julia gave him a pat on the helmet and told him he was brave. "Yeah, thanks." He said giving her a forced grin that she wouldn't see. He looked straight ahead of him again because he had to STAY ALERT. There was no way he would let himself be attacked by marine monsters. If any evil creature decided to attack them, he would be READY. KILL ALL THE AQUATIC EVIL, which was the WORST kind of evil, if you asked him.

And speaking of against the flow… Matt Solo sounded like he was going to throw up. Inside a helmet. Eurgh. She nudged his foot with hers and suggested, “Fresh air might help?”

Nothing in particular. Was that sad? "How do we know? Maybe the people who saw him disappeared and didn't get to tell us." She countered in what she thought was a sophisticated argument on her part, thank you very much.
WHY did he keep saying that? And to a new girl! Genny's face turned slightly red (though who could tell in this dark night?) and the words came out of her mouth instantly, "This boy's name's Sharksy." TAKE THAT. "And you're welcome to our boat. I'm Genny, a normal, human name." Unlike Sam's.
Whew, her small ball of anger vanished. Being mean was such a good outlet.

Nice ta meet ya. Me name's Sam." She ran her fingers over the rim of the boat lightly, almost tempted to dip them in the water, large squid or not.
"So, did ya only jus' meet, or y'known each'ovver fo' a while?"

"I'm okay!" Her face was bright red as righted herself with some effort. "Wonderful," she grumbled.
In the darkness, Ariande could tell another student was coming to the boat to join them. She tried to focus on the figure to see if she recognized the person, but it was just too dark. "You can sit here if you--...," Ariadne offered. Only, she never got to finish that sentence due to the girl tumbling in the boat and nearly taking them all for a swim. "Whooooa," Ariadne said trying to steady the boat.
It swayed back and forth for a bit until it finally went back to its calm bob on the surface of the water. "Oh, thank, Merlin," she said. She was sure SOMEBODY knew a drying spell, but she didn't want to take her chances. She didn't want to be known as the girl who swam to the castle instead of riding in a boat. "Are you okay?" she finally thought to ask the girl.
In the darkness, Ariande could tell another student was coming to the boat to join them. She tried to focus on the figure to see if she recognized the person, but it was just too dark. "You can sit here if you--...," Ariadne offered. Only, she never got to finish that sentence due to the girl tumbling in the boat and nearly taking them all for a swim. "I've never seen a real castle before, and I guess I was a bit too distracted by it to pay attention to were I was walking." Thankfully she'd tumbled into a boat and not the lake. It might have been summer still, but that water didn't look overly warm to her. "I'm Haddie, by the way."

Curls whipped around when Tory's voice came from right beside him "Dang Ugo, you and your ninja moves." Tenacius chuckled as he settled down.
But his face went when Mel said something about the beloved Corellian junk freighter. But now she was caught up on a word "Well ok, yeah dingy like piece of junk but I was also joking about the dinghy, which is also a small boat...." Ok never mind, maritime jokes only hits big at the Waterhead apparently heh.
Tenacius nodded and grinned at Tory's words "Purtee hugely epic times ten when we get there!" Brofist on that brutha!
And finally Mel got caught up "Yeah that’s right my Padawan. Star Wars."
But yes they must go FASTER. "What no oars?? Hyperdrive malfunctioned again!" he exclaimed dramatically, waving his arms about his head like a frustrated Wookie. Then Mel said something "Nah I don’t want you to get out and push."
Paddling with their hands seems like the only option left.
"Alright everybody, arms in the water and Stroke! Stroke! Stroke!"
........... Wait a sec, was that a Stormtrooper??
"Stormtrooper carrier off to the starboard side!" he bellowed pointing at the cool kid with a Stormtooper helmet "Man the laser canons!"

Samantha laughed at Mel's confusion, and gave the boy up front a playful nudge, "Face it Ace, you're just not funny." She was kidding though, she was sure she knew that. Because he was pretty great and made things exciting. And he knew all the old movies she did, probably thanks to Emmaleigh.
"The hyperdrive is alllways malfunctioning." And then burst out laughing and the exchange between Tenacius and Mel. "Does this mean Mel is the Princess?"
She was thankful when Ace got the others to help with the paddling, and when they all started working together, she could tell that they were moving a little faster. All of a sudden, there was an enemy ship! She grinned when she looked over and realized it really was a stormtrooper. "We gotta get them before they report to the Emperor!" Still paddling they way they were, they weren't changing the direction at all. "We've gotta lean," She said, pulling on Mel's arm, "and paddle on this side too." Between all her leaning and paddling, and trying to get out of the way for Mel to help, there was just too much leaning. She let out a shriek as the little boat tipped over, and SPLASH in the water she went.

The Giant Squid? Friendly? Ohohoho. Genny had a feeling the new girl needed a serious talking-to about the ins and outs of Hogwarts and its creatures. Luckily, SHE was well equipped and glad to share all her wisdom and made-up stories with her. "No, no, it's not friendly. Although..." She cast her eyes to the black waters. "... maybe it's always hungry? Which is why it eats kids? Maybe if we bring it food regularly it won't eat people?" Look at her making intelligent conclusions. Maybe she'd end up in Ravenclaw after all! Hah.
Hehehhehehehehe. Look at Sam (the boy) freaking out over a name. Hehhehehe. Genny looked very proud of herself for a moment before the new girl revealed her name. Now, Genny simply laaaaaughed loudly, "You're both Sams," very funny for some reason. "It would be fun for you two to end up in the same house." Grin. "Guess you'll have to take on Sharksy, huh?" To boy!Sam. Hehehhee.
"I'm okay." He nodded and let out a breath in a huff, still trying to get the air to come back easily to his lungs. His round little cheeks had gone pink, whether from embarrassment or the sudden cut-off of his breathing nobody else would know. Without any form of decorum he plopped onto one of the seats and looked at the hand that had gone into the water.
Oohhhh. Plant stuff.
Huh what? They were moving. He looked up, head turning this way and that as the boats propelled themselves forward. THIS WAS SOOOOOO COOL.
"Cornelius," he pronounced carefully, settling on the tall boy again. Coooooornelius. Corney. Yes. "I'm Jaemin. Er. Jaemin Song."
He held up the seaweed-y looking stuff on his fingers. "What kind of plant you suppose this is?"

They had made it alive. The rest of the evening should go smoothly now that they were getting across the lake in one piece. A tiny wet piece considering his new mate dunked his hand into the water and got some gunk on it.
Cornelius nodded absentmindedly at Jaemin as he sounded his name. Yeah, he got that a lot. Didn't know why either, but it was probably because of what Miss Libby had said; he was destined for greatness. "Nice to meet you," he extended his hand and then looked at Jaemin and his hand. "Were supposed to shake. That's what my dad does." NOT that he wanted to be like his dad, but he had the opportunity to be all cool on his own.
Glancing back at the thing on Jaemin's hand, Cornelius leaned forward and took a whiff. "Smells...ocean-y. Can't be gillyweed." He shrugged.
SHE WAS IN THE WATER! The last thing she had remembered before the boat tipped over was Sam leaning…maybe too far so that she could grab the paddle and help with the paddling…the squeal was probably the only thing people heard as she landed in the water under their boat.
She was fine, perfectly fine. Right? They had a pocket of air under their boat even she was just WET like standing under a waterfall wet…but actually more she was soaked everything about her would reek too…hah, she just laughed before swimming out from under the boat and looking around for one of the other boats to climb into…or well, hang onto like a barnacle.

"But there are people alive who have seen him," Samuel returned with a small smile. Was she just trying to dispute everything he said? Hmm, probably yes.
The way Genny's face turned red went unnoticed to Sam, thanks to the night sky, but he gaped slightly when she introduced him to the new girl as Sharksy. "No, no, my name's not Sharksy," he added hastily. Really, that made him sound like he was three, and he glared at Genny through the curtain of darkness. But his glaring was, in fact, quickly replaced by surprise when the new girl gave her name. "Er, really..?" He blinked. "My name's Sam, too." That made him feel somewhat awkward. Like, now there was girl Sam and boy Sam.
"We met recently." To answer girl Sam's question.

Maybe she shouldn't have asked about the big squid. She looked over the side of the boat dubiously. "Keeping 'n 'ungry squid at 'ogwarts seems a bit weird. 'spec'ly if it eats kids." She'd keep her hands inside the boat from now on though, just in case. She quite liked having all her fingers.
"S'not? Why'd she call ya dat then? S'a bit 'arsh." She looked at Genny somewhat pointedly for an explanation, although her gaze through the darkness was broken as the boy announced his own name. So that's why she'd thought someone was calling her!
"Sam's a good name," she said with a nod and grin. She hadn't met another Sam before, and she thought it really cool she'd met an actual boy Sam. As opposed to her just looking like a boy, that was. "It ain't dat funny," she commented, shooting another look at Genny. They hadn't even left this side of the lake yet, and she was starting to wonder whether the girl was being contentious on purpose. "Short fa S'man'fa, ain't it?" she explained to boy Sam. "But Sam's safa on the street," and she'd forgotten how to spell Samantha anyways.
And they met recently. Well, that was uninformative, but she had no intention of prying. Instead, she picked up on Genny's house comment. "Da evver of ya know the 'ouse you wanna be in?"

"Its so dark. I didn't even see your face until you got in the boat with me."
"I've actually been to Hogwarts before, but not as a student. My mom used to be a professor here, and I came to the castle with her a few times," she said. "I've never had to ride a boat to the castle, though." She cast a glance up toward the castle. The older students were probably already there. No fair. They had a nice, water-free ride. "I'm Ariadne Greingoth," she said.

Whoa. Was that somebody IN the water? As in, just bobbing along like they were out for a swim? "You should probably get into a boat," she said. "I've heard there are creatures like grindylows in the water." Scary. Very scary. Scarier than the embarrassment of falling into the water in front of all your peers. "Do you want to ride with us?" she asked. Their boat was nearby, after all.

Why did Genny call him that, she asked? "'Cause she's weird," he answered over the redhead's laughter. And when that laughter subsided enough for her to say that he ought to take on the nickname Sharksy simply because there were two Sams, boy Sam rolled his eyes. He wasn't even going to dignify that with a response!
"It is a good name," he agreed. An amused smirk danced around his lips when he caught girl Sam throwing Genny a look. Hah! Smirk still fixed in place, he returned his eyes to his redhead friend and gave a tacit look of triumph.
There were times when Sam had to concentrate somewhat hard on deciphering girl Sam's accent. 'Sam' was safer than 'Samantha' on the street? That was what she'd said, yes? His brow furrowed slightly. That was an odd thing to say. "Mine's short for Samuel." Naturally, it wasn't short for Samantha too because that was a girl's name!
"I'd like Gryffindor, but I think I might be put in Ravenclaw, which I also wouldn't mind." He already knew Genny's answer to this. "How about you?"

Whoooooooa Nelly. How did this one manage to slip his eyes as he heard a shrill squeal followed by a splash. So much for a dry journey for them all.
"Hang on, I got you." Justin said before grabbing onto one of her arms to yank her out of the waters. "Now hang on, this'll dry off your robes." He drew his wand out to quickly blow dry them off. "There we are, you should be just as toasty as you arrived by the time we reach the castle."
Just before any others have any funny ideas, "Stay within the boats everyone, we wouldn't want your shoes being the only things left we send back home of you." A little exaggeration, but not completely untrue.

Aside from feeling deeply betrayed and furious at him suggesting that, it would be such a noble thing to do. Beside, she believed she was strong and she'd wrestle the giant squid and win the battle and emerge a hero from the lake. For now, she just frowned at him. The suggestion was cruel. CRUEL. They were friends no more.
Calling him Sharksy was harsh? Pffft, someone wasn't fit for the most courageous house of all. Genny missed the looks the girl Sam was giving her because she reached inside her pocket and was unwrapping a gummy wand to entertain herself with on this endless trip. She did, however, saw Sharksy being all smirky and triumphant. She frowned again at her NON-friend, confused. ?????

For people having only recently met, these two were starting to sound like squabbling siblings. "Even so, dey'd get rid of it if twas a problem." Regardless of who was there first. Humans were like that. "So I dou' sacrifice is needed." Just saying, logically speaking. She wasn't supporting any one person's side here.
How come Sam was safer? Sam bit her lip, suddenly conscious of herself. She hadn't needed to worry with Dora; they'd met right there in Diagon Alley with Sam doing her thing. These two might be different, and judge her right then and there, before she'd even reached the castle. She was what she was though. No real point in hiding it.
"Less likely ta get mugged if ya look 'n' sound like a boy," she with a nonchalant shrug after a moment. "Where's I come from, anyways." Maybe they hadn't clicked onto her boyish hairstyle in the fading light.
And with that said, she considered boy Sam's reply about houses. "Why'd ya fink dat?" She was curious. She felt no such attachment to a house, although it'd be cool to be in Gryffindor with Dora. "'n wat 'bout you, Gen?"

So now it was like if they were holding hands. Fine, whatever. Very little bothered Cornelius.

Cornelius nodded at Jaemin's comment on Gillyweed. "That's what I thought." He wasn't going to mention anything about his astigmatism in the dark and that couldn't really see what was in his new mate's hand. He did squint his eyes, though. "I reckon you can eat it, and then you'll get these wicked gills and webby hands and feet." the Gillyweed. One day, he was going to be a fish.
Glancing back at the castle, Cornelius double-backed. "Soon what?" Was Jaemin planning on taking a swim with the fishies?
