Default Dueling Club Meeting One

A classroom wasn't the best place to hold a meeting, even if he had gotten rid of the usual desks and chairs there so, Hirsch had set up a small meeting place in the Arena itself. This was about dueling, after all. It made next to no sense to hold something like this in the classroom in the first place.

So, the man had arranged an array of cushions and mats on the floor of the middle of the arena in between two of the raised platforms. The room itself had a weak winter sunlight streaming in through the high windows and a heating charm in place, in case the cold was starting to get to anyone.

And Hirsch? Hirsch was leaning against one of the platforms, casting casual glances at his watch every now and then. His expression was neutral, maybe somewhat giddy if you looked closely, but something he wasn't about to show was any signs of nervousness.

So come in, pick a seat on the cushions, mats, floor or even the platform itself and wait for the first Dueling Club meeting to begin!

OOC: Please make sure to adhere to the Dueling Club Rules, Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules. I'll post again tomorrow in the afternoon GMT ^^

Please remember that ONLY those of you who've signed up for the club can post in here.

It was about time!

The day of the first club meeting had finally arrived and Hadleigh probably couldn't have been more happier. She had been waiting as patiently as one could wait for something like this since finding out that the dueling club would be continuing waaaayy back in the beginning of the term. So a long time...much much to long.

Wide awake and perfectly ready for whatever was to come Hady made her way into the arena when it was time. A quick glance around at those around her before her attention fell upon that of the man holding the meeting. "Hello Professor Hirsch," she greeted with a slight grin and nod of her head, eyes shifting on another a second later, "Admiral Airey." Hady smiled giving him the Vulcan salute. They weren't in class and she didn't need to but really she sort of liked it.

Opting for a seat away from most others she sat up on the platform, legs dangling down off the side. Anyone could think what they like about her choice of seating but really she was sat up higher for one reason...a better view of the entrance. Quite possibly she was looking for someone.

With an enthusiasm and full spirit, the young lioness walked into the dueling arena. She tried to act cool like the older students but still, her smile could say that she was VERY EXCITED with this. This wasn't the tournament yet, but still she was very enthusiast. "Hello Professor Hirsch! Thank you for bringing the club back, I have been waiting for this meeting!" She greeted the man. She picked a blue cushion and sat on the front. Woooohooooo!!!!

Was he surprised that Ava Burton was the first person here? Not in the slightest. In fact, the man found himself grinning from ear to ear when he looked up and saw her coming. He probably should have anticipated this, to be honest.

"Hello, Miss Burton. I'm glad that you're excited for this. Thank you for coming."

She moved into the class room and greeted the Professor with a warm smile! "Hello Professor Hirsch!" She said as she looked around and then found a nice spot on the platform and settled there.

She was right: Hirsh really was surprised to see her coming. Flashbacks of the previous lesson came back to him, especially the bloody nose and the wrist incident. Unless that was the very reason as to why she wanted to be here: to learn how to fight in the magical way without hurting yourself? "Hello, Miss Kennedy. Glad to see that you're all better now."

Dragging her feet, Suri slouched as she walked into the arena, her bag hanging off one shoulder and a very grumpy expression on her face. She'd wanted to be in this club when she'd sent her permission slip home, but that all changed when it had come back signed WRONG. She'd tried sending at LEAST five angry letters, but nothing had helped. APPARENTLY, mum didn't think she was talented enough to be in the tournament. She'd said something about "lack of control over wand" and "too competitive" and "rude". Which was SO. NOT. FAIR. UGH.

So, now she was FORCED to be here and learn about dueling but she couldn't actually duel. Benzi had said she needed to uphold the Rider name but she couldn't DO that if she WASN'T ALLOWED TO BE IN THE TOURNAMENT. Sure, he'd also said the challenges were fun but it was totally not the same thing and she was angry and grumpy and she was going to PROTEST the ENTIRE TIME.

Not looking at the professor at all - clearly it was his fault too, somehow - Suri plopped down on a cushion towards the back and hugged her knees to her chest. The twelve year old eyed the excited students with distaste and promptly decided that dueling club was for nerds anyway, and they were all beneath her. Curling her lip, she sighed and waiting for the club to start.

And here was the epitome of an angsty teenage girl.

Hirsch kept a neutral expression on his face as he watched the young girl come in to the classroom, not even so much as look at him before sitting down on a cushion. Honestly, he should've seen this coming. Not everyone was going to be excited about dueling or fighting in any way, his first lesson had taught him that.

But as for the girl, he didn't say anything. He simply shot her a smile and prayed to Merlin that there wasn't going to be more angst in this classroom.

"How you do, Professor Hirsch?" Henric greeted with a smile. He seemed to be looking well...he didn't know how to put it. Hmm? He just hoped the meeting would go well. Right....time to choose seats now! Ah he spotted his favourite blue cushion over by the corner! Henric tugged on his satchel bag as he made his way towards his seat.

He didn't forget to grin and wave at Ava,of course, "Hey Cake!"

This Prefect was so polite, wasn't he? He was used to hellos and good mornings and even questions about Defence, but a question he didn't get often from students was about his health. Huh. "I'm very well, thank you. How are you?"

Also. Cake?! Should he ask?

Probably not.

He wanted to see it.

"Hey Professor, It's cool you're letting this continue. It was fun last year"

Dante went over to an empty mat and flopped down on it. There down he was ready to listen to meaningless detail. Unless he is changing things up.

Ah, a familiar face! Weren't those nice to see?

Roderik found himself smiling wide again at the sight of Dante Barrington. Always fun to have in his class. "Hello, Dante! Nice to see you here." And was he glad that the room wasn't orange? He should be. He'd taken colour choices into consideration for this. "Thank you for coming. I hope you have fun again this year."

However, his ordeal was too much for the eleven year old to handle alone so, he obviously had to turn to someone who has more knowledge about defending one’s self; Hirsch.

It took him a good while to convince himself that it was perfectly okay to turn up and participate that morning. Surely, the professor won’t discriminate and single him out, right?

Quietly, Jace entered the room, bowed at the professor in greeting, and took a seat near Ava and Azura. Jace gave them a grin and waited for the meeting to start.

No, Hirsch wasn't going to mention the incident in the Training Room. While he may have long since gone past the age where looking cool was everything, he knew how much it meant to not let your guard down. So, for the sake of this boy and his ego, no. There would be no mentions of that.

"Hello, Mr Reed." Smiles and a bow of the head for you.

She entered the arena, pausing to take a look around. Rachel noticed Professor Hirsch and sent him a smile. Her friends got smiles too but she opted to sit next to her second favourite student leader. "Hello, Henric. I hope you don't mind me sitting with you." She made herself comfortable on a cushion closest to him.

The silent friendly type? He didn't mind those one bit. The man usually preferred the ones who really enjoyed fighting and getting their hands dirty but he had nothing against the silent friendly ones. In fact, they were welcomed. Like this girl here.

So when he saw the girl come in and smile at him, the man smiled back at her and let her go off to her friends.

He bowed his head in greeting, and on the way to a cushions, gathered himself enough so that by the time he was sitting full lotus on the cushion, he was calm and patiently waiting for the meeting to begin.

This kid sure had his way with entrances.

Hirsch vaguely remembered him from his lesson. His combative technique had been impressive so, naturally, it wasn't surprising to see the young kid here for this meeting. In fact, the man was glad he was here to take part. It would be interesting to see what the boy's fighting stance was like.

"Hello, Mr Toussaint!" he said, bowing his own head back at the young boy.

This was going to be awesome!

"Hi, Professor Hirsch!" she greeted, as she maneuvered through the maze of cushions and mats and found one she thought suited her. She sat down cross-legged on the mat and waved to Rachel and Azura. So who else had joined the club? What about DAVIE? With his exploding lemonade, he kind of seemed like the type to be here. Looking around, though, she didn't see him. Oh, well. Things had just gotten underway and friends or not, this was going to be AMAZING.

Oh, the excitable type.

Roderik smiled at the next student to enter the arena, wondering just how so much energy could be packed up into one small person. It was remarkable, actually. And it didn't seem as thought this was something only sweets could make happen.

"Hello, Miss Greingoth! Nice to see you so excited."

Mason gave the someone in question a nod and a smile, "Hello, Professor Hirsh!"

She made her way towards where Rachel and an unknown Ravenclaw sat. She plopped down next to Rach and elbowed her in the ribs. "Didn't know that you'd be joining." she said, "Do you know if Haddie is joining as well?" She knew that things had been kinda rocky for the best friends, but she really hoped that they had worked it out.

And now to wait for the meeting to commence.

Oh, another excitable type? Merlin, Ava and Davie were right: a lot of people really were excited for this club to begin. Good! It was good to get them into the swing of dueling from a young age.

"Hello, Miss Stevens."

And was it just him or was Miss Watson very popular?

The man rarely grew close with any of his colleagues, keeping most at a professional 10 foot distance, so when he did it became hard to stomach someone else in their position. It had been that way when Calista had left, and Maddox, and then when Sabel had taken Medea's role when she had left...and now was the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the New Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Entering the room, the Astronomy professor offered a quick salute to the man and then hung out towards the back of the room leaning against the wall.

Ah, yes! Ah yes, of course!

Roderik smiled at the next newcomer, glad to see that the man had made it to this little meeting. He was also glad that the man had agreed to assist him in this, especially since he'd been here longer and therefore, knew how things were run. So yes, thank you, Flamsteed.

As for the salute, the man gave him a two finger salute in return, all the while wondering why he was standing all the way towards the back. There was plenty of space up front.

It was not that she was a coward, it was just that she was naturally shy and not very strong - activities like in front of large crowds terrified her. It was the same reason why she never played Quidditch. The only difference in her mind between Dueling and Quidditch was that she didn't understand the rules of Dueling.

And now the day she had been dreading was upon her. Kitty walked in to the classroom, feeling lonely and on the verge of panic. Everyone else was excited. They probably would be very good at this. Her newest friend Mason was here, as was Rachel and her Muggle Studies partner Ariadne. Great. Now they would get to see her embarrass herself in front of everyone. Haddie wasn't here yet, but Kitty was sure she would be coming soon.

"Hello Professor Hirsh. Hi Professor Airey." Kitty tried to smile but found she couldn't. She wanted to tell them that she didn't understand the rules very well, and that she didn't want to be there. But if she didn't participate and her mom found out she would be furious. So she said nothing more and instead went to join her fellow students.

............. ??

Nothing else could have explained the man's feelings as he watched the young girl walk into the arena. Was she okay? Was she feeling angsty? Should he ask?

Probably not.

"Hello, Miss Valentine. Thank you for coming."

The fifth year headed to the arena and there were other students already there, he greeted Hirsch "What's up, professor?" and spotted Henric. Hehehehe. He chose to sit next to him, "Sooo....did you thought about what the letter said?"

Ah, one of the cool kids. And a prefect, too. He understood this all too well. He did.

This was just nerves.

Once they got started MAYBE she would enjoy it.

Stepping into the arena she looked around. Errrr... they weren't going to jump right to it, were they? Esme wasn't comfortable with that. Theory generally wasn't her thing, but she didn't want to start attacking her sister right off the bat. The Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson was bad enough. Only plus in her book is that wands would be used instead of fists.

"Hello, Professor." Spotting Rachel and cutie Henric she took a seat by them. "Hey," she said to them with a smile before giving Professor Flamsteed a Vulcan salute. She was sure he'd like that.

You know, Hirsch would've been lying if he said that he wasn't surprised to see this young girl in here. After their previous lesson, he wasn't expecting her to be here at all and yet, here she was in all her glory. Glad, he was. Maybe she wanted to learn a bit more?

"Hello Miss Darcy!" Smiles for you.

He knew nothing and he did not like that.

As he entered the meeting place, Yoongi wasn't running inside, greeting everyone with enthusiasm like last year. He knew now that the duelling club wasnt just a side subject. It could safe his life later if he ever got in a sticky situation.

it was not Hirsh that he spotted first but Professor Flamsteed as he entered. He looked at the man, gave a nod to greet his Head of House before he proceedded to walk further. "Hello Professor Hirsh" he greeted with a smile. "I'm glad you decided to keep the club running again this year" much better than fighting with his bare hands.

And more surprises came in the form of the Head Boy. Again, he remembered the lesson and what the boy was like during it. Merlin only knows how much opposition he'd gotten from that. So yes, he was surprised to see the boy wiling to duel against someone else.

Unless, of course, he simply had something against physical combat.

"Welcome, Head Boy Hyland."

Even if some of them weren't very good at magic, the professor would make sure that he left here with his cute, squishy face intact. Riiiiiiight?

He zoomed into the arena in much his usual 'I have too much energy' sort of way, waved to both the professors on duty, and then looked around at all the other students already there. HMMMMM. He wanted to be somewhere he could see everything, especially Professor Hirsch... they could sit anywhere, apparently, as students seemed to be strategically placing themselves all around. The small boy squinted at the cushions and mats before nodding to himself. He knew where he was going.

He perched himself on the edge of one of the platforms, as near as he could get to the professor without being too close. Now he was high up enough to see eeeeeeeeverything.

Oh, this kid.

Roderik found himself smiling wide as he watched the boy, his dimples on full display. So much energy from one kid. Look at the way he was zooming into the arena! Merlin, it was almost contagious. "Hello, Mr Song. Glad that you made it."

And yes, you're going to leave here with your cute, squishy face intact.

But, um, well, Hirsch was holding these meetings. And the twelve year old couldn't decide whether she wanted to be everywhere he was or as far away from him as possible. Crushes were really confusing and she hated them.

That look? That look of disgust? It threw Roderik off completely. So much so, that he almost wondered if he had something on his face that made her react to him in such a way. A hand started stroking his scruffy chin, as if to make sure.

Wide awake and perfectly ready for whatever was to come Hady made her way into the arena when it was time. A quick glance around at those around her before her attention fell upon that of the man holding the meeting. Ah, Hady! Oh Hady, yes, we remember you.

Roderik smiled wide at the young girl as she entered the arena. Here was someone else whom he was excited to see dueling. Something to do with their fighting performance. Physical fights were much different to duels, after all.

"Hello, Miss Lynch!"

Hirsch had been counting down the time to the beginning of the meeting as the students started trickling in but it was only when Hady sat down that he stole another glance at his watch and then decided to get this show on the road.

Was it time? It was time!

Taking out his wand in one swift move, he flicked it so that the arena doors shut of their own accord. A click rang out in the arena before he turned to the students gathered there, a smile on his face. "Hello and welcome to the Dueling Club! I'm so glad to see that so many of you have signed up for this." Really. Could they see how giddy he was?

"Now, firstly, let's go over a few rules. This Club is your choice to join but that does NOT mean that I expect any unsportsmanlike behaviour from any of you. This includes, not bowing, being generally rude to your opponent and using Unforgiveable Curses. Any disregard for the rules will result in your immediate departure from this club." Good? Was that sorted?

Good.

"Now," he said, relaxing a little and hopping up onto the platform next to Mr Song, "I have a question for all of you: which spell is always at your personal disposal? Which spell is the one spell that you'd always turn to when it comes to dueling?" Pause. "In short: which spell are you most likely to use? And why?"

And if they didn't want to answer because of personal, I-don't-want-anyone-else-knowing-my-favourite-spell reasons, they didn't have to. He was simply curious.

OOC: KJHDGKJHGKJFHDGKJDF LOOK AT THE TURNOUT!

Janelle was soooo excited, she could barely contain herself. When Professor Hirsch called the meeting to order, all of her attention went to him. The first question was posed and her hand went into the air immediately. It never occurred to her that maybe she shouldn't be revealing her secret weapon spell. Only it wasn't really a secret weapon. She figured it was a pretty obvious go-to spell.

"I think the spell that I would be most like to use would be Protego. A good defense it the best offense, right? You have to be able to protect yourself so you have a chance to attack." Of course Janelle had enough sense not to reveal her favorite offensive spell. She did not want to be that predictable. She had been studying her options and had a few that she had really been working on. Hopefully she'd be able to do well in her duels. Anyway, this club was all about learning, right?

Ava couldn't help but a little bit blushed when Professor Hirsch smiled and greeted her back. Deep down she still missed Professor Dakest, but this guy wasn't that bad. Did she just say someone call her cake? She already knew who did that, no other than the Hufflepuff prefect Henric Nicolei. "Hi, Giraffe." She insulted him back. The young lioness was gonna tickle him because HOW DARE HE CALLED HER SHORTCAKE IN FRONT OF OTHER PEOPLE? But maybe later. Watch out, Nicolei. And also, Hello there Professor Flamsteed!

it seemed like the member of dueling club this year was more than before.

Now the meeting had started, she listened to the Professor Hirsch about the rules and stuffs. Yeah, she did understand about it perfectly. It was kinda hit on her because last term when she failed defeating Colt Winchester and ended up being a second place in younger group, she was a little bit bummed. But well, she had moved on and ready for the tournament again. Winning or Losing it wasn't really an issue for her now (Though still she hoped that she could win. Hehe)

And their favorite spell? Well, she didn't want people know her trick how could she win against Davie Truebridge and Phillip Romalotti last year. "The shield charm, Professor. Because I can manage it to protect myself from the opponent and deflected it back in one cast."

Well, Professor Hirsh surely was giddy. If Mason didn't know any better, she'd say that he was more excited than the students. But then again, it felt like it was impossible for anybody to be more excited than she was.

Mason made note of the rules, she was generally a very outspoken person, so she was going to have to learn how to keep her mouth shut. Had anybody seriously ever tried doing an Unforgivable Curse? Hopefully no one in this class had that idea.

Mason raised her hand her hand at the Professor's question: Obviously she had two of her favourite spells in mind. "I like using Flipendo in duels, Professor. It gives you a little time to figure out what you want to do, since it would be pretty hard for your opponent to attack you instantly after he did a spine-breaking backflip. But I suppose they could counter it with Finite Incantatum." she told him, "Rictusempra is also one of my favourite defence spells, expect it is very unpleasant if you are the victim."

Laughing was good and all, but that excessive laughter was horrible. But she liked making people laugh, so it was a win-win spell in her book.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Rachel giggled after sitting beside Henric. "Boy, you're really excited, Henric.'' She couldn't blame him, even she was excited. "Yes, it is. I can tell from your reaction that it's going to be.'' She watched to see who else had signed up and was rewarded when she noticed many of her friends had. She waved excitedly to Ariadne and Kitty. When Mason took a seat close to her and elbowed her, Rachel gave her a mock reproachful look. "Hello, Mason. She signed up for the Club so she should be here soon.'' She then smiled at the other person joining them. "Hello, Esme.'' Her expression changed to a slightly stony one when Ilia came around. She didn't say anything to her, however.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Rachel turned her attention to Professor Hirsch. They were getting started! She listened to him with rapt attention. He didn't have to worry about her not showing any sportsmanship. She would always do so as well as observe the rules.

An answer to this question she had so the first year raised her hand. "The Disarming Charm comes to mind, Professor, because if done correctly, it can render an opponent 'handicapped' so to speak, in terms of doing magic without a wand.'' There were some persons capable of wandless magic, after all.

SPOILER!!: Before Class

"I'm good, professor! Can't wait for your club meeting to start, sir." His professor seemed eager to start too. Brilliant! He wondered what defensive/attacking techniques they would get to learn soon. He was so ready.

"Not the hair, llia!"Henric chuckled a little when his girlfriend ruffled his hair. He reached up to fix it back before tickling her on the side. "Glad you can make it too," he smiled. And yes...he really hoped llia and Rachel could at least act civil with other over the remainder of the meeting. Merlin...it was uncomfortable sitting in between these two. He tugged on his tie a little, feeling a little hot in here all of a sudden.

First spells he would think of was definitely the 'Expelliarmus' spell. He raised his hand,"Professor, I think disarming the opponent's wand first will probably be a good way for us to have an advantage over them. They wouldn't be able to attack us without their wands right?" honestly, his favourite spell would be 'Melofors', everyone need a good pumpkin for a head once. Hehe."Or we could blind them with "Obscuro" spell so they couldn't see us?"he added.

Of course Maggie was here.

Why would she pass up on an opportunity to see Professor Hirsch's beautiful face LEARN more about dueling? Exactly. Plus, she was dating the dueling champion from last year. Obviously, she HAD to come. And she did in fact like dueling too. It had been fun last year. Mostly. Apart from the broken collarbone. But even that had healed pretty quickly.

Smiiiiiiiling at the professor when she entered she bowed her head in greeting. Hiii. After that she quickly made her way over to where Zeke was sitting. "Hey." Maggie said softly and leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek once she'd sat down next to him. ON the cushion. Did his butt not hurt when he was sitting on the floor like that? Hers definitely would.

Aaaah. But they were starting!!!

Her eyes followed the professor when he moved. He could've totally come stand beside her too. She wouldn't have minded. Just saying. About the spell, though, Maggie didn't really have to think too long. "Everte Statum." That was the spell she'd been using most often last year at least. "It hurts and like gives you time to...regroup." And stuff. A+ answer right there.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Yoongi ignored the look of surprise on the Professors face when he had greeted him and went to sit down on the ground. He took out his notebook and quill from his bag in case something new was mentioned that could come in handy later.

As the meeting began, Yoongi listened and then thought of the first question. "Well, last year Professor Dakest" or was it just Dakest now? Huh...."teached us a spell called Persequoris and i found out that i used it in duels last year quite often" he said. "The spell locks on to a target and it wont stop following it till the target is hit or if an object is thrown at it. Its a cool spell that can be used in combination with any other spell" yes, that one was definitely his favorite now.

Perhaps predictably, Daxton had sat himself as far away from everyone else as it was possible to get, up against the wall and without a mat or cushion, just as he had chosen to do in the first Defence Against the Dark Arts class of the term. And, just like in that class, he was barefoot, his shoes and socks down by his side. Looking as bored as ever, Daxton glanced around at the others in attendance, occasionally glancing back to Hirsch. Airey Flamsteed's presence had not gone unnoticed either.

Daxton's expression did not change even when Hirsch launched into his spiel, but he did finally manage to keep his eyes on the professor for longer than a few seconds. The rules might be something of a problem; Daxton was regularly accused of being rude, despite never talking and the fact that he was not always intentionally rude. If it was grounds for being kicked out of Duelling Club, he may as well up and leave now.

But he did not. Instead, Daxton went back to looking around the room as Hirsch posed a question to the club, thinking up his own answer but having no intentions of sharing it. The natural response was 'shield charm', but that was boring and so predictable. Daxton had come to the conclusion (or rather, he had started hoping) that this was likely a trick question - depending on the context of the duel, if one knew the opponent's duelling habits, if it was a fight to the death against a dark wizard or a friendly duel, and so on - when he caught sight of Suri nearby. He did not look at her for long, but considered her and her hair and her general demeanour, then leaned back against the wall and looked back at Hirsch, instinctively glaring at the man he still hated.

When the sound of the clicking lock rang throughout the arena, Ariadne fidgeted on her mat in anticipation of getting started. She only returned the professor's comment to her with a smile, because he was getting started on addressing everyone as a whole. Rules? Riiight, of course she'd follow THOSE rules. Who in their right mind would cast an Unforgivable right here at Hogwarts? Or anywhere for that matter? Now the bowing she would have to drill in to her mind to remember to do.

QUESTIONS first. Always the questions first. Ariadne just wanted to hop off her mat, point her wand at somebody, and get started. ANSWERS, though. She waved her hand in the air. "Expelliarmus!" she said. "I'd want to disarm them, so they can't attack me anymore. At least not with magic." Protego was GOOD, but it would only help for the time-being. She didn't know about any of the spells taught last school year, because she hadn't been here. Also, she had no idea about all those advanced spells people were suggesting. Just the basics here.

Kitty waved back at Rachel and tried to smile, but she still couldn't. All of her fellow students seemed happy to be here, and they probably would be very good at Dueling. They probably knew some offensive spells, unlike her. Kitty just hoped that they would still talk to her after this lesson if she embarrassed herself.

Kitty didn't know any offensive spells. That was one of the biggest reasons why she was certain she would get embarrassed today. How could she possible win if she didn't know any fighting spells??? But she knew which spell she would use if she knew how. "Expelliarmus" she said, answered Professor Hirsh's question. "That's the spell I would use, because then my opponent wouldn't be able to do anything."

Azura's purple eyes lit up ever so slightly as she saw Jace enter the room and she smiled warmly and waved at him. "Hey." She said softly to the boy as she turned to see Rachel come in as well. Azura was seated close to her and she smiled down at her friend as well. "Hi Rachel." She said as she waved at Ariadne Goodness, she seemed so popular lately! Okay.. well four people said hi to her!

And then she saw another Slytherin sit next to Rachel and Azura waved at her as well. "Hi, I'm Azura." She said with a warm smile,.

Azura looked up at Professor Hirsch as he spoke to her, she could tell she had surprised him, but she was determined to get better at this whole fighting thing and she was going to learn how to protect herself, with.. or without magic.

Clumsy or not!

Professor Hirsch would see..

She raised her hand as he asked his question. "I would use the shield charm professor. To protect myself as well as to deflect spells coming at me, it would give me a few seconds to think about my next move as well."

That’s a relief. Jace turned pink when the professor greeted him. He did feel bad though because he didn’t even utter the man’s name. Though he bowed to him, he felt like it wasn’t enough. The Ravenclaw realized that he should be grateful to his sensei for keeping his mouth shut. He will fix that as soon as the meeting starts. He planned to be active in the meeting’s activity anyway. The awkwardness was broken when his eyes met Azura’s. The greeting was reciprocated by a soft, “Hi.” And a small grin.

---

It didn’t take long for the meeting to start, and when it did, Jace’s full attention was given to the man up front. Etiquette? Bowing? He’s been doing that ever since he could walk, and even if he’s not in a duel. It’s an everyday thing for the half-Japanese since it is a sign of humility, and respect. He doesn’t have any plans to remove the custom from his system. More like, never.

And of course, the golden galleon question for the day.

It was nice to hear everyone’s answers really. If only his father allowed him to join the tournament, he would have memorized each and everyone’s strongest defensive spell, and try to find a loophole for each. Jace glanced around, unsure whether or not he should answer the professor’s question. Will people know it was him who stunned the Headmistress during the Hag’s escape? By the looks of it, most of them were in a daze to even notice. It was enough reason for Jace to slowly raise his hand and answer the professor’s question. “I’d use the Stunning Spell professor. Not only the caster can disarm an opponent, he could also make the other party more vulnerable to offensive spells.”

Gulp. And that’s exactly what he did to the Headmistress. It was an accident though!

Thing was, Amur wasn't entirely sure about this whole dueling club. When the annoucement had first come, she'd jumped at the opportunity, thinking that she'd be awesome and impossible to defeat. When the meeting had come, she remembered that she wasn't particularly skilled in dueling and her fighting style might have been a bit more tooth-and-nail than decorum and bows. It, might be a problem.

Not to mention, rules in fighting? That seemed a bit....pointless. It wasn't like dark wizards followed any rules.

Due to the uncertainty in her little head, Amur wanted to stay closer to the door and relatively unnoticed. So, she had taken up a seat beside a rather glum looking firstie, and pulled one knee up to her chest, resting her chin on it in almost mirror impression of the girl beside her.

Professor Hirsch's first question was curious, as were her classmates answers. Which spell did she use most often and have on hand most often? Well, that was easy. "Draconifors." Plus, in a duel, how freaky would that be? To suddenly turn, a tree or a pillar of stone into a dragon that followed the caster's will? She'd throw down her wand in an instant!

Ilia gave the professor an excited smile and a head nod."Greetings Professor." Yes she was very happy to be here, she already liked this professor.

She ignored Rachel's existence, after all the child had nothing helpful to add to her and Henric's existence and nothing but rude or nasty things to say about her. She would tolerate the brat being next to her boyfriend only because they were in class.

Henric though....well he was adorable. She smirked when he said not to ruffle his hair. When he tickled her though she blushed a little. "Not in class." She did her best not to giggle, though she smiled at him lovingly. They couldn't do PDA in class honey.

A spell to start off a duel? She had several plans of attack and there was always the expected disarming charm but....she would answer something fun for class. She didn't care if anyone knew one of the spells she liked, after all it wouldn't necessarily save them from her. "Personally, I fancy a silencing charm. Unless your opponent can use non-verbal magic, it is a rather effective handicap to start with." After all, you couldn't even use a disarming charm without saying it unless you had become proficient in non verbal magic. If you couldn't use non verbal it made it all the more effective didn't it?

The professor looked so happy to see him. Jay wiggled excitedly on the edge of the platform, positively beaming. It was a good thing when professors liked their students! It made it so much easier to learn things, y'know? And he just loved to learn new magic things.

The first question, however, caught him off-guard. Almost more off-guard than the rules including something about Unforgivable Curses, because while he knew those existed... surely none of the students would consider using them in school? Jay hadn't actually done any dueling yet in his short magical career, which meant that... well, he didn't have a spell that he knew worked well for him in a pinch. It'd have to be one that didn't really hurt someone else, but still let him win... because when it came to hurting people, he wasn't about that life. Hesitantly, the boy volunteered an answer.

"Incarcerous, maybe?" he said thoughtfully, tilting his head. "Cause if it doesn't tie them up, it's still distracting and gets them off guard, right? Cause they gotta do something to the ropes to avoid getting them..."

Yes. Tie them up so they can't fight back and then you won! He nodded, wiggling a bit more where he sat, and taking special notice to his absolute favourite Gryffindor girl a bit away. HIIIII FRIEND.

Suri was much too busy staring at her shoes to notice who came in before the doors were locked - which, by the way, how dramatic - but she did notice when a somewhat older girl (Amur) sat down next to her. She turned her head and stared at said girl for a few moments as she debated whether she wanted to tell her to go away or not. Was she one of those annoying prefect-type people who walked around and encouraged other students? Because Suri was not in the mood for one of those at all.

Before she could make her decision, Professor Not-Dakest was off.

She tuned out after the third word and began playing with the hem of her skirt, bending and folding it as she waited for something to happen. When no one pulled out a wand and people started talking instead of Professor Four Eyes, Suri finally raised her head to look around. She didn't recognise too many people here. There was Maggie, Dante and of course Daxton was by the door, Ava and a few others. Oh and Flamsteed. Suri smiled briefly. She liked Flamsteed, he made her laugh.

Right, this... question. Seems as if they were talking about spells. Well she knew a spell. "Expelliarmus," Suri huffed out, her elbow raised in lieu of her arm. There. She'd participated.

Mason and Azura were sitting with her, and many of her the other school mates Haddie knew and got along with were close to her ex-BFF as well. It was enough to sour her excitement slightly. She didn't bother to wave to any of them, mostly because of how close they were to Rachel. "Hey, Professor Hirsch."

Haddie made her way to the other side of the room from Rachel and sat down on one of the comfy cushions that Professor Hirsch was so found of. Ignoring Rachel allowed her excitement to return full force and Haddie bounced a little on the cushion while she waited for the meeting to begin. She deflated a little when it did start and Hirsch asked which go to spell she'd use. The problem was she didn't really know any decent combative spells, and thus far, her go to was Scourgify, which was about as inept in a fight as a sponge would be. Haddie bit her lip and didn't say anything, listening instead to the answers the other students were giving. Lots of good spells to take note of.

The astronomer nodded quiet greetings to each student as they entered, tossing in the occasional Vulcan salute and standard salute every now and then, but for the most part the astronomer kept quiet to the back. Professor Not Sabel received a special acknowledgement, but the man did not move to the front just yet. He would, of course, if prompted to do so. Surely the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor wouldn't put him to use in the same manner that Headmistress Truebridge had - it had been exhausting.

His own bread and butter when it came to dueling? He supposed one could argue that he was taking a page out of wizarding history with his section being Expelliarmus, of the non-verbal variety. Disarm and that would be the end of things. Quick and efficient and everyone could go home.

Which is why he offered a few students, those that seemed to share his sentiments, thumbs up. Which would be surprising that they actually see it considering he was standing behind them. Well done, Flamsteed.

As much as he could respect discussion and things, especially regarding tactics a d the like, he was more of a put-into-action kind of guy, so his stomach dropped a little at the thought of them sitting idle for too long. All in good time, he told himself. The kiss from Maggie helped too, "Hey babe," he greeted in reply, leaning in to give her a kiss in return, a grin turning up the corners of his lips. Hi girlfriend.

And no, no, his bum was fine on the floor.

But since the meeting was underway... his attention returned to Hirsch.

It all made sense, but he found he had more than one response on the tip of his tongue.

Maggie's answer made him smirk a little, because she was cute when she was being all fierce and things... and Amur's answer near made him laugh. OF COURSE DRAGONS. But he was perhaps most impressed with Ilia's answer. Like, he agreed with her? Whoa.

Hand raised he chimed in with a response of his own, "I aim to restrict movement and the senses by any means possible, if they can't move, see, hear or speak... then they're as good as gone." It was a tactic that served him well in the past. But it was something he'd have to adapt for the future. He would not be predictable.

Carl focused on Professor Hirsch as the meeting officially began. He listened to the first question attentively. There were a couple of spells he could think of, but as he had never actually dueled before, he did not know which one he would always turn to. Therefore, he hesitantly chose a spell he would be most likely to use and raised his hand.

"I would use the Dancing Feet Spell, Tarantallegra. It distracts the opponent and gives you some advantage." He did not mention that it also had a hilarious effect. He had attempted it once at a chair in the Hufflepuff Common Room and watched as it started doing back flips.

Meanwhile, Carl was also mentally noting down the spells other people were mentioning. They would certainly be useful!

Esme was happy to sit with Rachel and Henric because if spells started blasting they could protect her - or at least Henric could. Juno went without saying because she was her sister.

SHE DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT HERE.

Unforgivable Curses? O_O Had... anyone ever tried that before? She didn't want to know the answer. If someone tried any funny business they would have to deal with her dad and even dark wizards feared him. At least they were starting off with a question and not full-blown attacks. Relieved, Esme raised her hand. Despite never duelling before she knew what spell she'd keep up her sleeve. "Expelliarmus because it disarms your opponent." Simple and effective.

Ah, Protego! Ah yes, Protego!

While it was an obvious answer, Hirsch was glad that she had mentioned it. It really was one of the best spells you can use, albeit a little expected. "A good defence is the best offense. Well done for bringing it up, Miss Guidry." Oh, he was glad that they'd remembered. "Good spell to use."

Another shield charm answer? Not surprising. Not surprising in one bit. "That's a good way of saving yourself while attacking the other person at the same time with their own spell. Fewer moves needed. Good answer."

This was.......... a new answer.

"Flipendo would be an interesting spell to use, I guess, but, like you said, they could easily block it. If you do manage to hit them with it, I don't see why it can't work in your favour." And he wasn't sure about Rictusempra but some people were ticklish so.......... he was going to leave it at that.

Oh, this was another answer he was expecting! The man smiled and nodded at the girl. "You're absolutely right! Expelliarmus is an excellent spell to use. And good mention of not being able to do magic without a wand." Remember his lesson on how to defend yourself without magic? Yes?

Hirsch simply nodded at the Expelliarmus answer but wasn't going to go too much into that. Not when the Prefect had brought up another good spell. "Yes! Yes, excellent!" Was everyone listening to this? "People generally rely a lot on their sight so stopping that using Obscuro would put them at a great disadvantage and so, you'd be at a greater advantage. Excellent thinking."

While Roderik had smiled and bowed his head in return to Miss Traulton, he was going to ignore the PDA going on like the fantastic professor that he was.

Cough.

Oh! Oh, this answer! "This is an excellent spell to use! And, if done correctly, they can be flipped backwards and off their feet completely. Their main concern wouldn't be to attack you. Well done, Miss Traulton."

Persequoris. This. This was a very interesting answer. And he kind of........ admired it? Was a bit surprised that it was mentioned?

What in the name of?

Difficult. He was being difficult and Hirsch had no idea why. The man matched the boy's expression with a small frown of his own before deciding against saying anything. As long as he took part and didn't intentionally cause severe harm, he didn't care.

Hirsch couldn't help but smile wide at Miss Greingoth's answer, especially the part about not being able to attack using magic. "Nice to see that you remembered the lessons learnt from my lesson on muggle defense. Well done, Miss Greingoth."

Another shield charm answer. But this one was interesting because she'd mentioned something about thinking about her next move. "I'm glad to see that you're thinking about possible future moves as well. Shows that you're thinking ahead." Yes, well done.

The Stunning spell.

You know, Hirsch had been expecting more answers along these lines and to find that the boy was the first one to mention this was surprising. Would no one else use the Stunning Spell to their advantage? Hm?

"Good answer, Mr Reed. You're completely right: if your opponent is rendered frozen, they can't exactly fight you back, can they? Not in the magical way and certainly not in the muggle way either. Well done."

She'd throw down her wand in an instant!

.................. This was not an answer he was expecting.

The man looked at the girl and then around and then back at the girl. She was joking, wasn't she? There was no way that she planned on transfiguring an object into a giant dragon to use against her opponent?

Oh, wait, she was being serious.

Right.

"That's a good way of using your surroundings to your advantage and making sure that you distract your opponent enough to cast another spell at them if you wanted to. Good thinking, Miss Neverwinter."

Oh, Miss Valke, thank you for not letting him down.

Roderik found himself smiling at the young Slytherin's answer. "And non-verbal magic is extremely difficult so they'd have to be particularly proficient in magic to do that. Well done, Miss Valke."

Almost more off-guard than the rules including something about Unforgivable Curses, because while he knew those existed... surely none of the students would consider using them in school? Yes. Tie them up so they can't fight back and then you won! He nodded, wiggling a bit more where he sat, and taking special notice to his absolute favourite Gryffindor girl a bit away. HIIIII FRIEND.

If Hirsch was the type to fanboy, he really would have at this answer.

"Yes!" he said, nodding and smiling brightly, "It's not everyone's first choice in spells to use but it's certainly a good one. I particularly like your mention of distracting them, even if it doesn't hit them directly. Excellent answer, Mr Song."

Haddie was probably lucky that this wasn't a class and that his uptake on lateness was a little lax. So, instead of singling her out and telling her to be on time like he normally would've done, he simply nodded at the girl as she sat down. Just pay attention, okay?

He still didn't understand the deal with those salutes but this wasn't the time to ask so he wasn't going to ask. Maybe at the staff dias when the two found themselves eating dinner at the same time? Maybe.

So, instead of saying anything, he simply cast the man a curious eye before turning towards the next student that answered.

Wasn't it interesting that Zeke Browne had opted for a generalised answer instead of a specific one? Interesting.

"That's an excellent tactic, Mr Browne. Without their normal senses or freedom to move, humans find themselves at a loss for what to do. Puts them in a more disadvantageous position, in terms of dueling. Great approach!"

This was another spell that hadn't been mentioned before. And, of course, it was one of the simpler spells but he did like the way the boy was applying this to a dueling situation. "I like your way of thinking, Mr Leonard."

This was a very simple answer, wasn't it? "Expelliarmus works very well, especially if done correctly. And you don't even use up a lot of your magical abilities to use it, nor do you tire out from using the spell. Well done!"

Once he was done talking to Mr Leonard, the man turned towards the rest of the class. "We've had some obvious answers from people and some very interesting answers from people as well. I really like the way people have gone on to thought about how these spells could benefit them in a duel and put your opponent at a disadvantage. Good! That's exactly the type of thinking that'll get you far in this club."

Smiling, the man bounded up to stand on top of the platform. Sorry, Mr Song. "Now! That's enough talk, let's get down to some spell casting, eh?" Were they excited? He certainly was. "This isn't the most exciting of activities but it's an activity that's going to test your reflexes. Because, in duels, your spells are important but your reflexes are just as important. Lack of a quick reflex and you'll find yourself hit by more spells than you can count, even if you use an exceptional spell to attack your opponent." Deep breath. "Besides, when you're in an actual duel that isn't in a controlled environment," Unlike this one. "you're going to be faced with all kinds of spells from, possibly, different directions. What better way to test that than here?"

"Often times, you might find yourself dueling against dark wizards in a group so, we're also going to try and work on that, even if you're not going to be working in groups in your actual duels in this club. This should help you be able to look out for each other as well as yourselves." And in a case where no one would be the damsel in distress.

"SO! I want you all to split up into four groups and position yourselves so that two are on this platform," The platform Mr Song was sitting on. "And on that platform. You should be arranged in a square formation so that you can see the other three teams clearly. When getting into groups, please make sure to have an array of different aged people in there: I do NOT want first years finding themselves bullied into a corner by the older students. Got it?" Good.

"Once you've found a group, split everyone up into roles: the attackers and the defenders. The attackers will cast whichever spell they want to attack the other teams while the defenders have the duty of protecting their team. Off you go!"

OOC: EEEEEEEEE!!

Okay, so this is fairly simple: split up into four groups and decide who the attackers and the defenders are. Activity won't actually start until early tomorrow morning GMT to decide on your groups. Please label EVERY SINGLE POST as Group A, B, C, or D (very creative, I know) and whether you'll be an attacker or a defender

Here is a small diagram that I've thought of in my head ^^ (excuse my lack of drawing skills)

SPOILER!!: Diagram

I will post again sometime tomorrow morning GMT. All rules/actual activity stuff will be explained then, Sorry for rushing this meeting so much <3

Azura found herself with a smile on her face as Professor Hirsch replied to her! Yessss! She hadn't gotten a frown this time! It was a good answer!

She was so excited she could nearly squeal! But she didn't of course! She had SO much to prove to this professor! And she just sat there like a good Ravenclaw until she listened to all of his instructions!

Groups? Oh Merlin!

She was not good with people in other classes! But might as well try ehh?

"Any body wanna be in my group?" She asked as she looked around.
