While your everyday classroom would be set up with desks, chairs and maybe even an indication as to what the lesson was going to be about, this classroom was different. The chairs were gone, the desks had vanished and the only ‘new’ thing about this class were the two boxes sitting by Professor Hirsch’s desk. One box, sealed, was sitting on the floor by the desk and the other, open and empty, was sitting on the man's desk itself.
With the desks and chairs gone, the Defence Professor has placed comfortable mats and cushions around the room. Each cushion has a small name tag on it and every inch of the floor is covered with the same mats that can be found in the Defence Training Room, if anyone has had a peek in there. If you look up at the board, you'll find out exactly what it is you're meant to do with your name tags...

Speaking of, Professor Hirsch himself can be found leaning against his desk, his arms crossed across his chest and his legs crossed at the ankles.
So come in, grab a cushion, and wait for the lesson to begin.

Dear Merlin NO NO NO! She had to fight now? Oh this wasn't going to end well for anyone involved..
Just please don't let me break my nose again.. please don't let me break my nose again." She thought to herself as she scrambled to her feet, fell over and then got up once more.. She cleared the tears out of her eyes and cast a half smile over at Garreth.. Here's hoping they could do this..
If not, she knew how to heal noses!
It took all of Azura's might not to back up from the advancing dummy, and she bit her lip a little as she held her position until it got close enough so she could hit it!
EEK! It was tall.. and big.. and.. Merlin help!! It was moving too! She wanted to cry for REAL now!! The purple eyed little Ravenclaw held her ground while trying to decide what pressure point to go for!
The nose! It seemed rather fitting!! She ducked a bit as it tried to "Hit" her and then she pushed her hand up, palm first into it's nose..
And that force made her feet skid out from under her and she fell over!
She sighed softly as she sat on the mat... At least it wasn't her nose!
EEEK!! Dummy Still moving!
Rather pleased with himself, Garreth took a step back from the dummies, content to let someone else have a go at the one he had paired up with before trying again. He shot a glance over to the right and spotted Azura sitting on the mat with her dummy still advancing! "Heads up!" he called out to her, instinctively maneuvering himself so that he was between the girl and the dummy. By the time he got there, of course, it was far too late to start deciding on what pressure point to go for, or if he should hit it at all. The dummy's arms - to his great displeasure - gently wrapped themselves around the boy. Eugh! It was so weird! He looked down at Azura still sitting on the mat and reached a hand down toward her. "Did you fall? Are you alright?" he smiled, despite the dummy hug.
"I know this wasn't how I thought this was going to go either." he began, shuffling uncomfortably in the dummy's grasp. "But if we have to fight dummies, it's best to get it over with quickly." Now, growing tired of the dummy, the boy took a deep breath and placed a well-aimed kick right into the dummy's groin. He rather feared the attack had hurt himself more than it had "hurt" the dummy, but at least it let go of him. He turned his attention back to Azura and his smile returned.

It was the perfect setup, one he would have been an idiot to pass up in the second.
Ducking as quickly as he did had caused the dummy to swing much further than it probably intended to. It left its back wide open and seeing that was enough to have Blaise hopping to his feet with immediate effect. The dummy was already turning to face him again which meant he was running out of time. The back of its neck--the back of its neck. WHY WAS THIS DUMMY SO TALL???
The young Gryffindor shuffled as the dummy turned, being sure to keep behind it for as long as he could while he worked out how he would get in a hit effective enough from an angle like this. When nothing immediately came to mind it became clear this would be a yolo moment in his young life and so he lunged at it with his best battle cry, latching onto it's back and shimmying his way into a better position.
It swung this way and that, trying to shake him and before long it was like that hippogriff ride they had at the fair but he clung tight and when he felt he'd gotten a good enough hold on it, he brought his right hand down with as much determination as he could muster.
The hand throbbing in pain after? Thaaaaaaaaat was the signal he'd hit too HARD. Sweet Merlin! Sweet Merlin! Sweet Merlin! IT WAS BROKEN! HE WAS DEAD! HE COULD SEE THE LIGHT--oh actually, it didn't hurt that much. Hey look the dummy had stop too.

There wasn't even time to say 'boo' before the dummies started to advance on them. Creepy stuff, really, these faceless stuffed sacks waving arms wildly in their direction as they stumbled closer and closer. It was possible Dot was going to have a nightmare about this later.
So thanks for that, Professor.
The creepy thing got closer, and Dot batted at it half-heartedly. "Okay, no thanks. Just get on with you and I'll... I said no thank you." It kept at her, and Dot planted a palm squarely in its chest and shoved backwards. Not like that was doing much to stop it completely... the dummy paused a moment and then the arms were swinging around her. "I SAID NO THANK YOU."
This felt like something out of the comedy shows he had seen that parodied scary shows. All around the room there were students fighting dummies, knocking them still or being grabbed by them. The one following him moved in a way not completely unlike a slow-walking horror movie killer, and it was unsettling.
Speaking of the dummy. While Jay was distracted, because people were SCREAMING and holy Merlin screaming never boded well, his had managed to catch him. The miniature boy yelped when arms went around his middle and lifted him off the floor, squishing his back against a soft dummy chest. He flailed a bit, kicking in hopes it would drop him, but it didn't seem inclined to do so...
The boy groaned and pinched at a soft arm. He'd been caught and it wasn't letting go. Added to that was the indignity that his feet were just dangling there, unable to reach the floor. He was about to give in and yell for the professor before realising that he could still escape the snuggly cuddle of death. There was one way.
Jaemin leaned himself forward as far as he could before rearing back as hard as possible, smashing the back of his head into the dummy's nose area.
HAH. HOW YOU LIKE YOUR NOSE IN YOUR STUFFING BRAIN, BUDDY???
...his victory was short-lived, however. It had frozen, but it had not dropped him. UNFAIR.
"Put me DOWN!" He yelled at it, squirming like an unhappy cat being cuddled by a toddler.
She wanted to go for the pressure points she hadn't really known about, or... used before.
And, holy carp! Every class in this place has just been getting better and better and... Did Ailsa just...? She did! Haddie was shocked for a moment, then broke out of and cheered, loudly! "WHOOOO! That's my cousin!" Even Ailsa was getting into this. Maybe there was hope for her yet.
Haddie twisted back to her own dummy just in time to avoid being hugged. Ohhhhh, scary, hugs!!! Coming back up, Haddie delivered a sharp, decisive kick to the dummy's side. It didn't stop moving. Odd she thought she'd hit in the right place. She tried the neck but it still kept coming.

"Now. I know that not everyone in this class is good at fighting, or even wants to fight, but no one goes through their life without some sort of confrontation and the sooner you learn how to defend yourselves, the better. So, if everyone can get up onto their feet, I've set up a little activity for you guys to practice attacking these pressure points." And not everyone was going to love it.

With a flick of his wand, the man let go of a disillusionment charm that had been in place to reveal a bunch of dummies standing behind his desk. They were your average dummies that you'd find in gyms where you can practice boxing on, and they looked, more or less, harmless.
Looked.
Turning to the rest of the class, he smiled, "Pair up with an animated dummy, pick out one or two of the pressure points you want to concentrate on, and try and defend yourselves against the oncoming threat." Of a dummy. Yes, very scary, wasn't it?

"Keep in mind that, like these dummies, if anyone's going to attack you, they're going to do so at close proximity. Use that to your advantage. And your elbow is a SHARP place of the body: a sharp strike using this will make your dummy go down. In fact, attack ANY of the pressure points properly and your dummy will go down. SPEED and PRECISION is key. Be fast, be precise, and use your body to your advantage."
"And, of course, you're going to need this." A flick of his wand and some of the words the students had mentioned appeared on the board.
That looked good enough, right? Good. "Because this is a non-magical based activity, I want everyone to put their wands AWAY, either in their bags or in the box in front."
"Oh, and one last thing: good luck."
And with that, the dummies moved forward.
OOC: MINI ACTIVITY TIME! YAY!
Okay so let me explain: the dummies are going to be coming at your charries. They might reach up a hand to your charrie but what your charrie has to do is to protect themselves by attacking the pressure points. If done correctly, the dummy will stop moving.
You CAN RP for the dummies if you want but the dummies will NOT cause a lot of damage, if at all. If they don't manage to attack the pressure points in time, their dummy with simply wrap their arms around your charrie, that is all. There should be NO serious injuries, please. My Hufflepuff heart says no.
Be as creative and outgoing as you want but please make sure to adhere to the site and Hirsch's rules.
You have roughly 24 hours to make at least 2 posts. I'm looking for effort, so even if your charrie doesn't get it right, they'll still get points for effort ^^
Unfortunately, Rula didn't have much to add to the answers people were giving about the pressure points, but she DID take notes while it was being discussed. And now there was an activity! Fun!
Didn't look like the dummies were something she could try her pretend-to-be-helpless-then-surprise-attack plan, but oh well. She could still do this successfully. Hopefully.
So she hopped up and took her position in front of the dummy that seemed to be coming for her. Okay, which pressure point would she go for? Hmm...
The neck? Yes, that'd be fine.

This activity was not exactly hard. The dummies were right in front of them and they knew that they were going to attack. That was literally their only purpose. It took away the element of surprise. The activity would be much more useful if there was some sort of surprise attack. But that would be dangerous. So probably not something that they could have done in a class.
The dummy in front of Olly started moving toward him. See, he knew exactly what was going to happen so he knew exactly how to avoid it. He decided to try to go for the eyes this time. He pushed his fingers up, but before they made contact, the dummies arms were around him. Like a hug. Except in a murdery way.
"Goodbye cruel world," he called dramatically as he struggled. How was he supposed to get away now?

So the eye thing had been a bust - and Scarlett was NOT going to let the dummy beat her again! As the dummy got it's bearing and Scarlett got back on her feet, she decided right away that she was going to go for the stomach this time. Her knee would surely do much more damage than her fingers - OH MERLIN! SHE'D BROKEN A NAIL. GREAT. This lesson just got better and better...
She had no time to think about a ruined manicure, though. The dummy was coming back at her at full force. This time, she waited until it got close, and she reached out and grabbed it's shoulders. A split second later, her right knee was in the stuffing of the dummy, and this time, she'd made contact HARD. The dummy fell backwards onto the ground, and even though Scarlett's knee was now KILLING her (the professor had failed to mention how much it HURT using your body as defense!) she had been successful this time. BOOM! Now she knew for future reference - knees were WAY better than fingers!

Okay. Sooo Dora was totally prepared for this! And seeing as she mentioned sensitive areas in her previous answer, she didn't feel it was necessary to elaborate further. Mhmm. And like... SABEL DAKEST was her UNCLE, so she had a slight advantage over the others, yes? YES! Hehehe.
Going to the front, she paired herself with a dummy and got her focused face on. Yep! No one was going to distract her. Not even Daxton Prince and his bare feet, or Chloe Newman and her blushing! Nope. None of it.
Okay... The obvious choices would be groin and knee seeing as she was a smaller person... mhm. So, Dora straight attacked the dummy groin area viciously! Anger was a thing she possessed!
Colt was pleased he got it right. It was even cooler and satisfying the teacher was enthusiastic about the class. His teacher in durm wasn't particularly liking the subject she was teaching. He gave credit to this dude. Alright finally the activity. He beamed and was so prepared for this. So he needed to attack the pressure points on the dummies. That shouldn't be too hard right? He was kind of nervous something would go wrong but I mean he did dueling club. He shouldn't be nervous. These dummies can't even do enough damage to bring him to the hospital wing like the Professor said.
He got up from his seat and got his wand out of his robes. This wand was his trusted possession in dueling club. Don't let him down now. He thought about which pressure point he could hit first? He debated about the eyes or the groin. I mean both areas people had time to defend themselves unless he was quick which he usually was.
The slytherin saw the dummy coming towards him. "Bring it on dummy.." he said putting his plan into action and was going to aim for the eyes. If he could get the eyes then he could delay the dummy into attacking him twice.
It was coming at him too fast. Cornelius was just assessing how he would go on about this and where he would jab and kick and punch and bite and all the things when the dummy CHARGED at him. Sure it had been charging at him but...
...BUT HE WAS ASSESSING THINGS.
ASSESSING.
There was no time. The dummy was all up on his FACE trying to grab at him like it KNEW him. Eyes wide as saucers, Cornelius threw himself to the ground, tucked and ROLLED away. He's had all too many almost-kidnapping-situations that he was almost an expert at tuck-and-roll. That and his mum was really hard on him when it came to defense. Huh. He could see why now. He'll thank her later.
The dummy came at him once more, and still on the ground, Cornelius did what came easiest to him. He kicked the dummy behind it's calf. RAWR-HISS!
Kaylee squeaked. There were dummies attack them now! She froze. The little girl didn't fight. EVER! She forgot everything that her fellow students, including herself, said about the pressure points.
She paled when she saw one heading straight towards her! Before the curly haired girl could even think of any possible move, the dummy slammed in to her.
The little Hufflepuff fell on to the mat with an "OOF!" She groaned as she sit up. 'Well that wasn't fun!'
Oliver wrote down more notes and then the list on the board appeared. He was ready to write about those things too when the saw "Eyes: gouging, poking, scratching attacker’s eyes with fingers or knuckles." Now that was just gross. Professor Hirsch wanted them to GOUGE OUT SOMEONE'S EYES. Ew. The boy knew they were just doing it to a dummy, but the lesson of the day was how to defend himself in real life. Which meant in REAL LIFE, Professor Hirsch was telling him to POKE SOMEONE'S EYE OUT. Eeeewwwww. Ew.
Quickly, Ollie wrote down the rest of the notes on the board, trying his best not to freak out because ew. Once done, he put his wand away and stood up, waiting for a dummy to come at him. Yeah. That's right. He was ready.
Turning around in circles, he searched for the one that was for him, and then he spotted it making its way closer to him. "COME AT ME BRO." Ollie grinned to himself because he'd really always wanted to say that. Once the dummy was close enough for Ollie to reach, he aimed for the dummy's groin with a kick but missed and got the thing's thigh. "Seriously???" The dummy came closer to him and he tried his best to push it away, too distracted with how bad his kick was to focus on the pressure points part. And now the dummy's arms were around him. This was it. This was going to be how Oliver died. He was pretty sure nothing was going to happen to him but what if this was a rogue dummy and it decided he was the one to take?????!!
"Tell my mum and Jon and siblings I love them...tell Timmy to save meeeee." Yes. He was very dramatic for a fourteen year old Slytherin.

Wellllll this was a bit dull, this being-hugged-by-a-dummy thing. Sure it was soothing, but they weren't in nap class right now. Davie needed to think. He was good at thinking; he was a very book smart kid. Very very. Too book smart to be rescued by a damsel, apparently. Now what was that thing, that acronym one kid had shouted, which Hirsch had liked quite a lot?
"SING...." he mumbled to himself. Yes, SING! He had to SING! Not literally, no. He was going for the Solar-Plexus, In-Step, Nose, and G... well, let's hope the first three would work without the G. So first he had to hit the solar plexus, which was somewhere under the ribs... with his... uh, elbows! Yes! David quickly jabbed his elbow back into the dummy's midsection, aiming for just under the ribs, then stepped down hard on the dummy's foot while he was at it.
That combo worked well enough that the dummy let go of him, and the skinny second-year scrambled away from his would-be attacker. He thought about taking out the dummy's nose or throat for good measure, but honestly, it was just a gently dummy. So instead he backed away, keeping his hands up in a bit of a chopping motion just in case. Just in case the professor made the dummy attack him again.

Elliot flailed a little, too long limbs moving with a little less grace than he had planned as the dummy shot toward him. He went for the nose, trying to remember how to use his hand but before he could remember it was too late and the dummy has enveloped him in an unwanted embrace and sent him stumbling backward a bit. He grumbled as he tripped and fell on his backside. Hmpf. Well there was a first time for everything he supposed.
Time to put his plan into action. He noticed the dummy coming closer and closer. Perfect just right where he wants him. He got his wand at the ready and pointed it at the dummies face. But wait he didn't need his wand. He put it away. He was going to go at it bare hands and all. He was pumped and started to move his legs. He grinned and he was gonna tackle it like he did in his football practices. He ran at it full force and tackled it to the ground.

That was little harder than he thought. Owwwww. He rubbed his head because he hit it kind of hard. He even fell back onto the floor. He butt kind of hurt too. "Alright dummy, it's on." he said mentally psyching himself up. He jumped and he managed to get his hands behind the neck of his dummy and pressed into it. He got it and he saw the dummy wasn't moving. Success at it's finest. He grinned with glee. He actually had Braedon to thank for this. Something he would never say. Like ever.
"All in a days work.." he said cleaning off his hands off the dust.

The man wasn't Sabel, but he'd earned Zeke's respect... Hirsch was passing.
He listened as Hirsch explained the pressure points and how they were advantages not only in muggle combat, but also magical. Something that he already knew, but was perhaps reinforced somewhat. It was something he would have to be mindful of in Dueling Club this year.
Upon receiving instructions for their activity, Zeke did as told and surrendered his wand to his bag - not trusting it to mingle with other peoples' wands in a box, pssshhh. But then, it was game on.

Or would have been, had Maggie's voice not distracted him. The dummy got her?! His head turned to where she was standing, caught in the dummy's arms... and then he realised. She was being Maggie. For Hirsch?

Huffing Zeke returned to the task at hand, the fact that his GIRLFRIEND was ogling the professor displeased him greatly, and now he really was happy to punch something. Not cool girlfriend, not cool. Why couldn't she just NOT be one of those girls... it was, embarrassing.
Zeke rolled his shoulders as he approached an on-coming dummy with long purposeful strides, happy to meet it part the way. Closer... closer.... closer..... when close enough with merely a step between them, Zeke executed his first move.
Starting with something small, Zeke stepped in with his preferred foot, his palm open and heel angled correctly, jabbing forward and upward against the dummy's nose causing it to freeze and go down.
... it wasn't nearly satisfying enough though. Ugh.
Glancing around at the people near her while the mechanical dummy began to approach steadily. It’s movements were mechanical and robotic of course but that was expected with a charmed item wasn’t it? Shifting her feet so that they were a hips width apart she slowed and watched the robotic arms and legs to see what it was going to do.
As it’s leg rose she dove the opposite direction and tumbled until she was behind the dummy. Twisting around and slamming her foot into the back of the dummy’s knee was the easy part. Pivoting as it stalled so she could run was the harder part.
The voice in the back of her head was saying to run, while the butterflies and feelings…they were telling her to squash the little thing like it was a bug. After all they were a bug weren’t they?

He was still on the ground kicking at the dummy as it tried to push its way closer to him. Even though he was such a fighter, Cornelius was still miffed that the dummy had not given him enough time to ASSESS the situation. The first year used that small fire in him and kicked the dummy hard enough to only make it stumble. Not one of it's pressure points.
........Shoots.
Cornelius was quick on his feet, using his Quidditch skills for this. All those falls from his broom came in handy today. But just as he was about to ASSESS the situation his eyes landed on someone who was dancing through this. It HAD to be art. Cornelius STARED, mouth slightly opened.
"That...was...so...cool," he exclaimed breathlessly, green eyes flitting up to the guy (Zeke). HE wanted to do that. HE wanted to kick butt so hard it looked effortless.
With reinvigorated motivation, Cornelius turned around just as the dummy came to him, arms ready to grab him. The curly haired boy did the only thing that came to mind and HEAD BUTTED the dummy. "OUUUUUUUCH!" It hurt. Not a lot but the surprise of it--WAIT.

The dummy had its arms wrapped around Dot, although it wasn't squeezing the life out of her or anything. She didn't like it, but WHO WOULD like being hugged by a creepy dummy thing? After a moment of wiggling to get loose, Dot quieted in its grip and tried to calm her mind.
1) This was Defense and she needed to display some tactics as they'd just been taught.
2) She knew how to defend herself - both through the class conversation AND her previous karate lessons.
3) No one was going to die today.
So. She needed to aim for the dummy's pressure points, and her choices were limited by the fact that her arms were pinned to her sides. Her feet. "NOPE," Dot was still in shouty mode as she stepped hard on the dummy's insole. His grip loosened, and Dot danced free.
No more creepy dummy, okay? Hands up, Dot took up a position opposite her dummy and waited for it to come at her again.

Soooooo, Professor Hirsch was agreeing with her point. Kind of. Esme was going to take it as agreement and run with it. She wasn't very good at this subject even if she liked it, so any points in her favour were good.
And she got another one!
The brain was a good pressure point; she was going to store that in the memory bank! Maybe it would come in handy later even if she'd still prefer her dad protecting her. She wasn't a fighter like her sister.
Going up against dummies wasn't exactly her idea of fun, but if she kept a note of the pressure points... MAYBE she would do okay? It was worth a shot. Just focus attention on areas like the head and solar plexus. A good whacking with her elbow could do the trick, though a part of her worried about causing pain - in real situations, not against a prop.
She was such a Hufflepuff.
Getting to her feet, she stood in front of a dummy and prepared herself as it came towards her. A hand reached out for her and she tried to dodge it and get her elbow in, but it got a hold of her.

With reinvigorated motivation, Cornelius turned around just as the dummy came to him, arms ready to grab him. The curly haired boy did the only thing that came to mind and HEAD BUTTED the dummy. "OUUUUUUUCH!" It hurt. Not a lot but the surprise of it--WAIT.
HE DID IT. DID ANYONE SEE?????????????

Hazel eyes shot to the side as he heard an ickles exclamation, and HE wanted to see what was so 'cool'. When he turned though, the boy was looking at him. Yes, ickly Slytherin, he was all sorts of cool. "Hey," he greeted with a head nod - giving his dummy time to become animate again.
....... and ouch.
Zeke had watched curiously as the kid faced his dummy opponent, and head butt it.
"Try to avoid head butting, as effective as it can be, you'll do yourself damage too." Not good.
What was also not good, was he was currently distracted, and hadn't noticed his dummy recoup itself. Stiff arms closing in around him from behind, and instinctively Zeke stomped down on its foot, and shot an elbow into it's solar plexus.
BAM!
Dummy down.

Oliver looked around for someone to help but they were all busy saving themselves. HE NEEDED TO BE HIS OWN HERO.
He stopped flailing after realizing he was even doing it in the first place, and tried not to focus on the dummy's hands tightening around him (they were definitely tightening, mhm). Trying his best, he sloooowly turned with the dummy and squinted up at the board to see what his next option would be. He could try the groin again but really, with how badly that went the first time, he wasn't about to try it again.
Oliver's eyes searched the board and realized the best and easiest one for him to do was the eyes. The gross disgusting eyes. Great.
The boy wiggled a little in the dummy's grip, wondering if maybe it would let him go but nothing happened. He focused on his breath, making sure he COULD still breath and then worked in getting the image of someone poking someone else's out out of his head. Once he managed that, he closed his eyes and focused.
Oliver reached his hands back and felt around for the dummy's fake grooooss eyes. So gross. This was it. He was going to do it."LEAVE ME ALOOOOONE." GOUGE GOUGE GOUGE.
He was still yelling out the last word after the dummy had let go of him. SUCCESS. After about a minute, he realized he was freeeee and he quieted down and blushed a little. "...sorry." Ollie generally wasn't roudy but he didn't enjoy being attacked...or gouging eyes. Nope. He rubbed his hands on his robes, hoping he'd feel less gross, and took a seat again.

She was scrambling back on the mat when suddenly.. it what seemed to be a blinding flashing light, someone was there in front of her! Was it her knight in shining armor?
What? Where did the light come from? Did she hit her head? And Oh! It Was Garreth!
"Watch out!! She squeaked a little too late as the dummy wrapped his arms around her friend and she bit her lip a little as she made a face at him..as he reached down to help her up.. "I did fall and I think I'm all right."Except for delusions of someone coming to save her..
"Are you okay?" The purple eyed girl looked up at her friend as she stood up and brushed off her pants.. "It's hugging you." She said as she bit her lip and tried not to giggle.
She watched as he kicked it and it let him go and she smiled warmly at him! "You did it!! She said with a bit of a jump in the air before!! ACK!!!
It was moving again!!!

Cornelius rubbed his forehead where a red mark was already starting to form. He was as tough as bricks but bruised like a peach. "'s the first thing I thought to do." Actually, he hadn't even thought about it because he had no time to ASSESS the situation. "You did it all cool and hiiiyah and BAM!" The dummy behind him stumbled forward, not ready to fight yet. "How'd you do it?" Was his mum an Auror too?! Or was he just like...a natural?
And just as he asked that the dude's dummy came back to life and attacked him. Cornelius held his fists in front of him, mock punching the air. Get him! GET HIM! HE GOT HIM! "Wiiiiicked," he breathed with a slow, cool nod. DUDE!
Inspired by what he just saw, he turned to his dummy, SMIRKED and charged at it with his elbow sticking out. He ducked the outstretched arms out to get him and STRUCK...........right in the family jewels. He turned back to the dude with proud grin on his face. "Did you see THAT?"
