Though your early morning class is normally held right outside of the barn, Professor Draper has decided to switch it up for the day. Following the instructions on your house noticeboard, you make it down to the lake for your first class of the morning. Luckily your Professor was feeling merciful and left a sign by the usual meeting place for those who failed to check the announcements. However, if that applies to you, you better be running to class. James doesn't tolerate tardiness.
The crisp late-January air greets you as you make your way towards a row of benches that sit a good distance from the lake. The grass is sporting a fresh layer of cold dew, however, the lake looks peaceful and undisturbed. Hopefully you wore layers, it’s a little chilly out.
Your seat on the bench faces both the lake and a portable chalkboard that Professor Draper rolled out for the lesson. And speaking of your Professor, he can be found standing in front of a large table off to the side. He stands there not only to greet you as you come forward to find your seat, but also to make sure that you don’t touch any of the empty glass jars on the table, those are for later.
Please pick a spot on the bench, class will begin promptly at 9:00 am!
OOC: Hi I’m BEYOND excited and incredibly nervous for our first official CoMC lesson together! However, please note that this should NOT be your character’s first lesson of the term! By this point in the year they should’ve already attended several lessons and will at least know some very basics about the subject!
Please remember all SS Rules and Classroom Rules apply. I have ways of knowing who didn't read them!
+ I will post in approximately 13-16 hours to start the lesson. Please get comfortable in the meantime, but try to keep excess chatter at a minimum ^^
Class has officially started! If you're just joining us now, please post as if you've been present the entire time. We'd love to have you join in at any point!!
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
After the instructions, Yoongi walked over to the table to grab one of the jars like Professor Jerkface had said. So when they got a flying seahorse they would trap it in here? Sounded easy but Yoongi knew how difficult it could be. Like fishing which required patience and patience wasn’t one of his virtues.
He moved to the edge of the lake, holding the large jar under his arm as he walked. He secretly hoped Norah would stand next to him. But she was probably going to stand near other younger kids to assist them when needed. Which was something he should be doing as well but first he needed to take care of his own task. Which was filling the jar with water.
Pouring water with a non-verbal ‘aguamenti’ in to the jar, the Head Boy turned to the lake and pointed his wand.

Oh look…activity.
Well some activity.
They were moving on from the discussion to learning some magic which was always cool. It also meant everyone was to actively participate so Olivia had to play a part. Not that she was against the matter because at least they would be moving and warming up. And learning a spell to boot. The seize and pull charm, the incantation, rough pronunciation and wand movement added to her notes for her personal reference and studying. Now into the practicing.
Separately.
“Carpe Retractum…” the first year spoke trying it out. “Carpe Retractum,” she repeated working out the feel and sounds of the two required words. “Carpe Retractum…KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum…Carpe Retractum.” Olivia spoke the words over and over, going over them over and over in hopes of mimicking the professor’s example as close as she could to ensure the correctness. Troublesome Latin and its feel on one’s tongue.
Well. WELL. What was the point of coming to class if you weren't going to get the thing done??? Matt had LEARNED a new spell and he wanted to see it WORKING. Even though he had to catch some awful yet not so awful because tiny seahorses water creature.
"Right, come on." He said as he shifted his weight from one leg to the other, eventually settling on a balanced standing position, READY to cast the spell PROPERLY. The first time he hadn't really meant it. "Carpe Retractum!"WHOOPAH!
OH, SOMETHING HAPPENED IN THE WATER, MATT SAW IT!! It hadn't been a Flying Seahorse coming his way or anything - that was what he supposed that would happen, at least - but the water splashed at the exact point he was staring at. It was either his spell that had done that, some other kid's spell or some evil water creature decided to move around that area just as Matt cast the spell.
There was no way Matt would figure out which of the options had happened, so he shrugged again. He liked to think it had been his spell, so there. It had been his spell then. Heh!

Rachel watched Haddie as she actually tried out the spell. "I don't think that's what Professor Draper had in mi-.'' She stopped abruptly, impressed with her best friend's work. "Wow. Excellently done, Haddie. Some more practice and you'll be perfect!'' Rachel was smiling but then it faltered somewhat as Haddie took aim at Ilia. "Haddie!'' She grabbed the other girl's wrist. But it was too late. Despite herself, she couldn't help but giggle. "I reason this is revenge for the dueling club meeting.'' She knew Haddie wouldn't go to the extreme to 'accidentally' hurt Ilia, however.
The Eagle turned her head back in Draper's direction. She was happy that he hadn't caught on to what Haddie had been doing. Oh! They were about to get started. Lovely! "Let's go get started, Haddie,'' she said after the instructions had been given. She collected a jar from the front. "Aguamenti,'' she said confidently. Just a teeny trickle of water leaked into her jar. "Aguamenti.'' Nothing happened this time. "Aguamenti.'' Hello, water! "Finite.'' She was ready to begin fishing now.

It yanked, hard enough to mess up her bun and she let out a yelp.
Holding the back of her head and wincing she looked back at a couple of misbehaving eaglets. Her eyes narrowed on the pair and glared. Baby bird was holding Chirp Twerp's wrist. The little brat was probably miffed over the duel, but she needed to get over it. You don't take it out an opponent later for no reason. She was not even the person who knocked her off of the platform, she just silenced her. She'd remember it brat, her glare said as much to the child. "I believe that the professor said to practice the words and motions separately for a reason. Mind where you aim your wand and what you peep, Chirp." That would be your only warning kid.
Focusing back on the matter at hand, she rose from her seat and brushed her hand against Henric. Walking up to the desk, she grabbed a jar and walked into the grass. Now she could fix her hair....loosing her golden mane from the remaining bonds, she preened and smoothed it before just braiding it this time. There, that would do for now, back to this jar business.
Haddie's eyes went wide with shock and she covered her mouth with hands. "Oh god! I'm so sorry, Ilia! So so sorry!" She genuinely looked horrified by what happened. "I can't believe that just happened. Rachel! Why didn't you point out where I was aiming sooner!?" She really should win an Oscar for this performance. The sheepish, embarrassed, My life is over act didn't drop until Ilia's attention turned away from Haddie again. Finally. She glanced over at Rachel and shrugged. She was smirking though. "No one picks on you but me." Okay, and maybe a little bit of payback for the Snake's gloating after the practice duel. Just a bit though.
Still grinning, Haddie followed Rachel over to the table and collected her own jar. She couldn't help but notice that for once her best friend wasn't trying to lecture her about what she did. But then, she knew her best friend would enjoy that as much as she did. Haddie grabbed a jar and aimed her wand at it. "Aguamenti!" A geyser erupted out of the tip of her black, silver and gold wand with such force that the water sprayed back out of the jar, soaking her. "F-finite!" Casting the spell with a mouth full of water wasn't easy, but she somehow managed. But now she was soaked and twice as cold as she had been. "Aguamenti." Haddie muttered sourly. A much softer stream of water flowed from Kira's tip, filling the jar. "Finite." The stream of water stopped again. "Hold this." Haddie handed Rachel her full jar of water and cast the hot-air charm, before turning the wand on herself to dry off.

Now, time to explain Aguamenti. "So this spell is quite simple, as long as you can visualize what you want to achieve. Think of watery things, like waterfalls and water faucets and bathtubs and rubber ducks." LOOK AT THAT, he was starting to understand Muggle lingo! "It might help you to clear your mind if you look at the lake a bit, so that all the water gets into your mind, not literally of course, but visually, before you try the spell again. To shut off the spell, you just imagine turning your wand off, as though you're turning off a tap!"
Quite easy, quite quite. Davie glanced out at the lake as though modeling the spell, and then glanced back at Azura to see if she was ready to try it or not.
"It's nice to officially meet you as well Davie." She said with a warm smile and a nod. It was one thing to know about a person and it was another thing all together to actually meet them. Azura had remained neutral in the whole Haddie/Rachel war. But she was glad they were friends again.
She was pulled from her thoughts as he tried to explain Aguamenti to her and she didn't have the heart to tell him that she knew and could perform the spell, but with her mind and her heart not in it.. It wasn't working..She had had this same problem in her duel.
Though that the last part..
"Clear my mind and look at the lake?" She repeated as she looked out at the lake for a moment, her purple eyes gazing at the water, it was gently lapping on the shore and the movement and sound was soothing to her. She pushed Jace from her mind, that ridiculous potions class and her sham of a duel and took a deep breath.
"Thank you Davie, I think that helped." She at least could focus on the task at hand now!
She looked down at her jar and then visualizing the lake in her mind and nothing else, she said.. "Aquamenti! And just like that, water started to flow out of her wand and into her jar.
"Thanks so much!! The visualizing the lake really helped out." She said as she shot the boy a grateful happy smile.
It's nice to have you back magic! She thought to herself.
So after he was done practicing the wand movement, he was now onto the wand movement. He squinted on the board to see what the teacher wrote and it was a whip like movement. Huh...he could do that. He walked away though from the big crowd and found his own spot. He got his wand out of his robes and began to practice. He whipped his wand a few times. He thought why not put it together and see if something comes out of it. He felt a little foolish waving his wand. He felt more like a cowboy.
He concentrated and said, "CARPE RETRACTUM!" and then did the whip like movement with his wand and hmm....nothing came out. Was there supposed to be a golden/orange light? Huh...well it seemed they were moving on. He went back to join the others.

Scarlett KNEW she had the incantation down. There was not really a whole lot too it - and now the wand movement. Which was really the most fun part of this whole spell. WHIPPING YOUR WAND LIKE A WHIP. THAT was what was so cool about this spell, and she was really excited to try it out! But she knew she had to just try the movement first - didn't want to get the professor all mad at her for getting ahead of herself!
She took her wand and focused on the spot in front of her, and pulled her wand back and forth sharply just as instructed. She imagined the red yellow looking magic rope hitting the spot she was focusing on. Alright, she was ready for the main activity now!

Now that Austin had the talking down, it was time to practice the wand movement. It wasn't too hard, just a simple one. He practiced it slowly at first, making sure his wand arm got used to the movement. After a few tries, he sped up his moving, eventually speeding it up to where it was one swift movement.
After a few minutes of practicing the professor told them what they were doing today. Fishing... great. The only plus side about this was that Austin was learning about where his ingredients came from. He wanted to know about what he was using, understand that they didn't just grow on trees. Weeell, some of them did, but not flying seahorses.
The first step was grabbing a jar, which he did. And with a quick "Auguamenti" He filled it with water. Step 2 was figuring out where to stand. A few of the students were already lining up along the lake bed to fish. Where would he stand?

After a while Olivia figured she was satisfied with her pronunciation of the incantation. There was only so much practice that she could do, especially since they were going to have to move on at some point so she couldn’t linger on the practice. So now she had to try out the wand movement the professor had explained and demonstrated for them all. A whip-like gesture which kinda was well-fitting given the name and action and purpose for the spell.
The Ravenclaw exchanged her quill for her wand as she retrieved it from her safe place. Starting with it pointed upwards, she tilted it forward and quickly swished it back. Then again. Upwards and back, then forward, and then whipped backwards. Over and over again Olivia practiced this move just as she had the incantation. She just had to get it good and ready for when she put it all together.

That sorted, Esme made her way slowly towards the lake.
Despite the fact that she wasn't thrilled at the prospect of grabbing innocent seahorses and containing them in a jar she was going to do this. Mostly because she realized that chances were she wouldn't be incredibly successful in the endeavor. The much more likely scenario was pulling up vast quantities of seaweed and maybe bits of rubbish tossed in by litterbugs. Even Hogwarts wasn't immune to that problem. Sadly.
Setting up not too far off from Rachel and Hady, she glanced out at the water. Yeah, she was definitely not heading any closer than she needed to. Seeing the Healer for a case of hypothermia wasn't on her bucket list so she would pass on that. Instead she kept her feet firmly planted a few feet away from the edge and used that whip like wand movement like a boss.

Janelle walked around with her water filled jar, until she found the perfect spot. At least she thought it was the perfect spot. Now it was time to concentrate. Janelle looked out into the water and visualized a flying seahorse coming her way. Trying to convince herself that she could do this, Janelle was ready to give it a try.
Janelle set her jar down in front of her and took out her wand. Making the whip like motion, Janelle said, "Carpe Retractum". Annnnnd nothing. No flying seahorse, no flying water, no flying anything. Ok, so it was back to square one for Janelle. She knew this wasn't going to be easy. She was just going to work harder and focus more. If at first you don't succeed.

Oh look at that, she was getting the hang of it already! Naturally Davie thought he'd taught Azura the spell, so talented was he, that he simply beamed and nodded at her as she filled up her jar. "Good job! Now on to the whip part..." And he mostly said that to himself, because it was time for him to get this ball rolling. Even if he didn't WANT to collect wittle seahorses.
Davie cleared his mind, focused on the cool whip action of his wand, and gave it a flick toward the water. "Carpe retractum!" he cast enthusiastically, mostly just excited to see his wand do that thang again. And sure enough, it did! ITDIDIT. Where was Char. Was she watching? This was cool. This was BFF-level of cool stuff.
He'd have to try it again, only on the water now. "Carpe retractum!"

Austin eventually picked an open spot near Azura since she was one of the few people he knew. She seemed to be busy, though, so he just opted for a small nod in her direction.
Turning his attention to the water in front of him, he watched as flying seahorses started jumping out of the water. It was an amazing sight indeed. Their scales glistened in the sunlight, and reflected against the water. It took a few minutes, but it wasn't until students next to him started yelling their spells that he broke his trance. He just wished there was some way to capture this moment. Maybe he'd invest in a camera for next term.
Looking around he realized he hadn't even started gathering seahorses. Welp. Here goes nothing.
Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
Perfect timing!
She was getting the hang of the wand movement, relatively simple as described, and Professor Draper was moving them on and introducing the main activity where it was to be put all together. Olivia listened intently to the instructions being to the class so she could duplicate it all once they were released to do so. Jar…water…spell. Easy enough, her magic just had to behave well enough for it all to work together. But first, a step that only required physical movement.
Momentarily stashing her wand securely in her pocket, the Ravenclaw got up from her seat on the benches to retrieve one of the jars from the front. Simple pimple. Once she had one on her grasp, Olivia was about to bring it back to her seat when she stopped herself. She needed to spread out and collect flying seahorses so why would she hang out away from the lake edge. And there was no point filling it up and then moving it so the first went in search of a perfect perch while still remaining among the others.
It was time for them to actually get the flying seahorses now? Oh good. The small boy stood up again and moved toward where the jars were set up as the other students were doing the same, reaching with gloved fingers to pick one up. He hugged it to his chest before moving closer to the water.
Others seemed to be filling the jars with the aguamenti spell, and the boy wrinkled his nose as he considered that. Was that really okay? Some of the students had brought up that the lake had really specific thingies about it that the creatures in the water were used to... what if he put a seahorse in the aguamenti water, and it missed its old water so much it just up and died?! Fishies were like plants with soil, right? If you didn't have the right water, or the right soil, the fish or plant couldn't really do well.
So, with a look at the professor, Jaemin slipped off his gloves and tip-toed to the edge of the lake to scoop some lake water into the jar. The small boy squatted down carefully and reaaaaaaached to dip the jar into the water; he didn't manage to fill the jar up, but it was nearly to the point it needed to be. Maybe it'd be okay if the rest was aguamenti'd? He pulled the jar back and took a few steps away from the water, looking at what he'd managed to gather before feeling around for his wand to fill the jar the rest of the way.
If they died now, they couldn't say he didn't try to keep them alive.

Rachel pressed her fist against her mouth to stop herself from giggling at Haddie's performance. Really, her best friend could put up such a good act. She lowered her fist. "It was an accident, Ilia,'' she said as innocently as she could. Luckily, Ilia didn't say much more and turned on the pair of Eagles. Rachel smiled. "I love you too, Haddie. Now let's go do some fishing.'' Yes, Rachel understood that Haddie showed her affections differently.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
This time around, she made no attempt to hide her giggles and did so openly when water sprayed all over the other girl. Clutching Haddie's jar, she mulled over the situation of Flying Seahorse fishing. "I think we have to cast the charm into the Lake.'' Bending gracefully, she placed the jars on the ground next to their feet. Standing straight, once more, she concentrated on the charm she had practiced a few moments ago.
"Carpe Retractum.'' The whip like movement was done to no avail. Rachel looked over at Haddie, disappointment on her face. "I know it'll take some time. Let's try together.'' She looked back out at the Lake. ''Carpe Retractum.'' Not so much as a flash of wand light happened. ''Carpe Retractum.'' Hello, magic rope! She watched excitedly as it landed in the lake, still attached to her wand. She had done it!
Henric wasn't really paying attention and just continued doing the wand incantation quietly on his own , until something happened to llia's cute hairbun. "You alright?"he asked his girlfriend. He glanced back at Rachel's group. He frowned at them especially at the girl, Haddie. He cast a slightly disappointed look at Rachel too. He hadn't talk to her of late since the activity over in DADA class. He wrote something on his parchment and enchanted the note, before silently sending it and slipping it into Rachel's bag. There were things he wanted to say to her, regrettably. He stood up and followed llia, picking up one jar as he walked by the desk.
"Aguamenti.." he muttered softly, filling the jar up with water. Although, he had no mood whatsoever to catch flying seahorses, there was still a level of participation he needed to achieve for this class. He watched what llia did...and half-heartedly cast "Carpe retractum" as well.

Now that she’d gotten her not entirely necessary practice done, all that was left for Brooklyn to do was apply herself to the activity. Granted, if she could have gotten someone else to do the fishing for her, she would have welcomed that with open arms. Hypothetically, as she still didn’t particularly like hugs. Although she’d survived that one, so she imagined another wouldn’t kill her. As long as it wasn’t done without her express approval. Plus, preferably not by someone sweaty and smelling disgusting. She didn’t think it was too much to ask. Besides, even she knew there would have to be some form of repayment if someone volunteered to collect the seahorses for her. She wasn’t stupid, just very particular.
For now, though, she was resigned to having to perform the activity herself. Getting up from her bench, she went up to retrieve a jar, inwardly nodding as she heard the reprimand over the hair pulling. That had just been immature, but then what could anyone expect from a first year. She certainly didn’t expect much. Returning to her bench, she pulled her wand out again and aimed it inside. “Aguamenti,” she cast, quickly filling the jar. That was easier than filling a cauldron, after all. Less water. Now she just had to bother about casting the charm again.

Jar full of water in one hand and her wand in the other Hady stood near the lake just looking out into the water for several moments. Slowly her hazel eyes shifted from the water and it's creatures to those around her surveying their tactics with the tasks. Not all that many of them appeared to be doing that well.
Letting out a small breath and tightening her grip on her wand she was ready. "Carpe Retractum!," she cast confidently making perfectly sure it was in time with the whip-like motion. Instantly there was an orangish glow and a magical robe appeared attached to her wand. Shifting her weight just slightly onto her other foot Hady watched as the end of the rope sailed smoothly into the water.

Elsa waited patiently in line to get her jar. Her feet kept tapping anxiously on the floor. She was really excited to try and really use the seize and pull charm.
She finally grabbed her jar and hurriedly filled it with lake water and began searching for a nice quiet place to try and begin her fishing adventures.

Jace nodded in understanding, scribbled down some more notes, and went on to retrieve a jar from the table up front. Again, he didn't like the idea of fishing because of the cold weather, but then again, he didn't have any choice. Besides he doesn't have any intention of wasting his efforts in studying for the day just to get a zero in the activity portion. He ought to show his teacher that he's really serious with his studies.
Tucking the jar under his arm, Jace got himself a good spot, far away from the other kids. Since he was going to go "fishing", silence and concentration is a must. Besides, he does enjoy working alone.
First things first. Crouching near the lake's edge, Jace placed the jar in front of him, and carefully filled it with water. "Aguamenti." The Ravenclaw watched his jar be filled with liquid, and stopped when it was three-quarters full, "Finite."
Now that's done...it's time to fish.

Ok, this isn't that hard. She glanced around to her colleagues and could spot a few familiar faces nearby as she kept walking to an empty portion of the lake's shore. She set her jar in the ground, stretched her arms above her head and gave her limbs a good shake.
Let's do this! She tested the whip-like movement with her wand a few more times before adding the incantation words. Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum...
"KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum" she tried out loud a few more times, working her pronunciation. This wasn't that hard.
She took a deep breath, focused her gaze on the lake and combined with the whip-like movement she cast the spell "KAHR-paaay ruh-TRACK-tum". But nothing happened, no Golden/Orange Light, no nothing. Buggers.
She scratched her head and looked around to see if someone had managed it to work yet.

With her jar almost filled with water, Rachel went off to find the ideal Flying Seahorse fishing spot, her left arm linked through Haddie's right one. She didn't have to go far to look, of course. She simply chose one a little distance away from the spot where the class had been held. She thought that if she were around where less students were, she would have a good chance of catching at least one seahorse because less students meant less noise to scare the seahorses away. "Is this spot okay? We can always move if you want to.''
She was still worried about if the Seize and pull charm would hurt the little creatures but Professor Draper wouldn't have let them do this activity if they would be harmed... would he?
Mulling over Draper and his constant grumpiness, Rachel scanned the Black Lake. She just needed to wait now for the flying seahorses. "Do we just wait for them to fly out of the water?" she asked Haddie uncertainly. It seemed the logical thing to do so for now, she was waiting, her eyes focused on the water.

"See, you love my mischief." Haddie followed her best friend, shivering as she used her wand to dry herself off. The hot air was glorious though. By the time they stopped, she was too busy enjoying the warmth that she almost didn't realize Rachel had asked her a question. "Oh yeah, this place is fine." Not only had the hot air dried her nicely, but it had left her robes nice and toasty warm. Grinning, Haddie aimed her wand at Rachel, letting the other girl enjoy the hot-air before finally saying, "finite." The hot air stopped blowing out of her Kira.
"No idea if we're supposed to wait for them to fly or not... do they really fly? Or do they just jump out of the water like flying fish?" She shrugged, and watched Rachel try to cast the spell. "See, this is why I practiced it for real before. Don't worry, you'll get it." Sure enough, Rachel got it. "See, told you so." Haddie gave her best friend a smirk and aimed her wand at the lake. "Carpe Retractum!"

Letting his scarf hang loose around his neck, Jace cleared his throat, visualized what he wanted to happen and achieve, and practised the whipping movement of his wand.

By the time they stopped, she was too busy enjoying the warmth that she almost didn't realize Rachel had asked her a question. "Oh yeah, this place is fine." Not only had the hot air dried her nicely, but it had left her robes nice and toasty warm. "I had the idea that they may jump out like Flying fish but I've never seen any of them doing this at any time I came down to the Lake so I think we have to do this as though were are actually fishing.'' Rachel smiled at the encouragement. She giggled. "Professor Draper might had thrown me out of the lesson if he saw me do that.''
The dark haired Eagle stared out at the Lake, watching and waiting patiently for a seahorse to be attracted to her rope. She hoped to feel the pull on the other end soon as she dearly wanted to catch at least one of the creatures. "I wonder how long it usually takes to capture one. I've never been fishing before so I don't know much about it,'' she informed Haddie.
The seconds turned into minutes and still she felt no tug. Rachel was just starting to think that no seahorses were coming when she felt her magical rope a tad heavier on the other end as though it had wrapped itself around something. "Haddie, I think I've got something!'' She started to pull it in, filled with excitement. But as the rope came in closer, her excitement evaporated. "It's only a clump of seaweed.''
