Default CoMC Lesson 1: A Day at the Lake!

Though your early morning class is normally held right outside of the barn, Professor Draper has decided to switch it up for the day. Following the instructions on your house noticeboard, you make it down to the lake for your first class of the morning. Luckily your Professor was feeling merciful and left a sign by the usual meeting place for those who failed to check the announcements. However, if that applies to you, you better be running to class. James doesn't tolerate tardiness.

The crisp late-January air greets you as you make your way towards a row of benches that sit a good distance from the lake. The grass is sporting a fresh layer of cold dew, however, the lake looks peaceful and undisturbed. Hopefully you wore layers, it’s a little chilly out.

Your seat on the bench faces both the lake and a portable chalkboard that Professor Draper rolled out for the lesson. And speaking of your Professor, he can be found standing in front of a large table off to the side. He stands there not only to greet you as you come forward to find your seat, but also to make sure that you don’t touch any of the empty glass jars on the table, those are for later.

Please pick a spot on the bench, class will begin promptly at 9:00 am!

OOC: Hi I’m BEYOND excited and incredibly nervous for our first official CoMC lesson together! However, please note that this should NOT be your character’s first lesson of the term! By this point in the year they should’ve already attended several lessons and will at least know some very basics about the subject!

Please remember all SS Rules and Classroom Rules apply. I have ways of knowing who didn't read them!
+ I will post in approximately 13-16 hours to start the lesson. Please get comfortable in the meantime, but try to keep excess chatter at a minimum ^^

Class has officially started! If you're just joining us now, please post as if you've been present the entire time. We'd love to have you join in at any point!!

Class Progression:
+ Greetings + First Question
+ Responses to First Question + Second Question
> > > Clarification for the second question
+ Responses to Second Question + Third Question
+ Responses to Third Question + MiniActivity
+ Main Activity!
> > > Activity Update!
+ End of Lesson

Class was beginning and Janelle was ready. At least she thought she was ready. It was cold, but for some reason Janelle felt fine. She didn't need a warming charm.......at least not yet. Anyway, she had more important things to focus on. The first question for instance. Janelle wasn't sure whether the professor meant creatures that were native to the Hogwarts area or any creature that could be found on the grounds. She decided to go with the latter.

Janelle raised her hand and began to speak. "You can find Hippogriffs at Hogwarts." She loved the Hippogriffs. Janelle pretty much loved all of the animals at Hogwarts........except maybe flobberworms. After answering, the Ravenclaw jotted down a few notes based on her classmates' answers.

Well now magic themselves warm. See Tenacius wouldve thought of that had he known how to do that. But warming up magic and clothes? What are the risks that will end up with bonfire from clothes?

So he got up and started B O U N C I N G around, jumping jacks, zumba, silly stupid motions he was making up to the beat of an invisible tune. Somebody said the giant squid "Yeah!..." huff huff "I saw it in the lake when we went under!" What a wonderful way to start off the first day of school.

But all this warm excitable blood rushing to his head suddenly got a thought percolating in the back burner of his brain to suddenly come front and center "Professah... Are there any hogs around Hogwarts? I mean its in the school name and we have them boars by the gate, but I don’t think I've actually ever seen one." huff huff huff "Or do we actually keep them in a pen somewhere and that’s what we cook for dinner?"

Because then technically they have encountered hogs around these parts.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

From her seat beside Haddie, Rachel crossed her hands over her chest in an attempt to make herself a little warmer and to watch as her peers arrived. "Hello, Janelle.'' Her fellow Ravenclaw received a smile as did Kitty. But then she was looking back at her best friend. "Have it your way, Haddie. Holding grudges will get you no where.'' She paused before saying quietly. "You really ought to have respect for Professor Draper. Whatever happened before is int he past; he still is your Professor.'' Rachel disliked disrespect in any form. It was just plain rude.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The cold wasn't a bother to her now that the lesson was starting. So long as she had something to distract her, she would be fine. She frowned in David's direction. Hags? They were lovely? Had he gone mad? Hags were creepy! With a bewildered look at him, she turned her attention back to Draper with her hand raised. "There are crups in the barnyard.'' She thought back fondly to Spot whom she had once taken out so he could play with him.

Jace inclined his head toward Professor Draper, saying his muffled thanks as he complimented his scarf. At least the blue and bronze shade suited his skin perfectly, right? Oblivious to more of his friends coming, the Ravenclaw's eyes were on the peaceful lake. He didn't like this cold class one bit. Rubbing his nose with his scarf, Jace sat straighter on the bench, his full attention now on the professor as he started to talk.

Warming spell? No thanks. Still thinking about his misfortune of stunning a Headmistress a few months ago, he thought he'd lay low with the wand work for now. He didn't want to accidentally burn himself, okay? Instead, he hooked the edge of his scarf on his ear, rubbing it vigorously to keep the heat from escaping his ears. A trick he has mastered over the years.

As his classmates started to offer questions, Jace mentally ticked off the creatures in his mind that he memorized, and pretty much just stayed quiet in his seat. Merpeople, Giant Squid, Centaurs, Hags, Bowtruckles, Grindylows...hm. There must be some other creature out there in the Lake that hasn't been mentioned yet. There must be a reason why they are so near the body of water right now...unless the Professor just felt like being a sadist for the day, which was likely. With a gloved hand, Jace raised his arm, and waved it to get the professor's attention. Dwarf Ravenclaw person here, sir! "Flying Seahorses professor! I believe we've got them in our Lake..." his voice trailing off, taking a side glance at the body of water beside them, then to the clear jars before them.

And say what? Boars? Hogs? Jace looked at the Gryffindor amused, and entertained with his...dancing, if you can call it one. Surely, they won't be doing pickled pork today, right? He'd rather go and do Flying Seahorse Fishing than pickle raw meat...just saying.

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

Sam wasn't really cold, since she was used to far worse, but she still tugged on her scarf and re-wrapped it round her neck as she waited for the lesson to start. She was curious about their location, and all of those glass jars. Clearly the Giant Squid wasn't going to fit in any of those containers, but couldn't help but wonder if today would be the day she'd finally get to meet him.

She struggled to think of any different creatures as her classmates started rattling off all the obvious ones. She'd seen the thestrals on her first day, of course, and she'd only just been thinking about the Giant Squid. And then she thought about other places on the grounds, ones she'd actually visited, like the Herbology greenhouses and garden. And then she had her answer.

"Dere's sumtimes garden gnomes in 'erbology, so I 'eard."

Henric ought to cast 'melofors' on some of the little ickles heads for disrespecting and complaining about the cold. They should be lucky to have a lesson out here, not many students in the world have these kind of engaging opportunities in their classroom. Why were they complaining? Henric disliked hearing them the most. It was a shame to see his juniors acted in such a way. He sighed, shaking his head. Honestly, he was disappointed. Henric sat at the very back beside llia, observing and listening to their answers before offering his answer of his own, "Professor, Bowtruckles, I heard some of them attacked students recently." Yup, he heard about it. Hope nobody was injured during the attack.

Melbourne was quietly sitting there watching Professor pretty Draper interact with people…and…well, a part of her was nervous about looking silly and Mr. doesn’t-like-her-friend-Haddie was being a giant pile of troll poop. Seriously. Hags were not lovely if you looked at them right.

Raising her hand Melbourne grinned up at the Professor. “There are supposedly Thestrals in the forest,” Melbourne grinned at the Professor. Yep. See. This girl knew her stuff…and she wasn’t totally fluttering her lashes at a man waaaaaaaaaay too old for her. Not at all.

. Since they were outside and down by the lake Bella didn't want to take any chances of catching a cold, so she was completely bundled up in a few layers so she could stay nice and warm through class. She was already seated on the bench as Professor Draper started class and asked the first question. She thought for a moment of all of the creatures that could be found on the Hogwarts grounds and wanted to make sure she didn't say the same answer as someone else, which was hard because a lot of good answers had already been said.

"House-elves," she finally blurted out. They were considered creatures that could be found at Hogwarts, but maybe the Professor meant just on the grounds. "Oh well they're inside the castle.... umm... flobberworms."

Mel grinned over to Isabella when she brought up house elves. That was a good point they were in the castle. Looking around at the other students she raised her hand again before spitting out the name of another creature.

“Professor…seeing as we are rather close to Loch Ness is there a possibility that there are Kelpies in the region?” She asked and glanced over at the lake. Yeah, that would not be fun if one of those were in their lake now would it? It would be kind of deadly dangerous...but the squid would have a beast to play with!

Was it that cold? Really? She looked at other people around her. Hmm, she supposed so.......maybe she was an ice queen or something..... Oh well, it didn't bother her. Although....she make have scooted toward Henric a little.....that wasn't because it was cold though. Ilia sat quietly and listened to the other students answers, calmly looking at the empty jars. With a small, unmoving smile her hand raised and she waited to be addressed. "Sir, Flitterbies are rather common in the right weather." She loved to watch them dance through the air. She could list more, but it was far more amusing to watch the other students repeat each other and wrack their brains. Ilia would not deny that her snakey streak was quite prominent as she got older.

James stood around waiting, checking his watch every few seconds. Had he been too hopeful in thinking Hogwarts students would be capable of following directions properly? Must he take them by the hand and actively lead them to class next time? Every time he managed to give any of them the slightest benefit of the doubt, they disappointed.

However, he was most disappointed in the blue house. Weren’t they supposed to be the first at lessons every single time? With that thought in mind, it was surprising to see that the first arrival was not of the blue variation. She was yellow. And with a badge, too.

After having spoken with the Head Child, James was starting to think they just gave badges to anyone these days. Though, arriving first did earn this peppy one a few points in his book. Congrats. ”… Good morning, Miss Kittridge,” the extra syllables were completely unnecessary and would therefore not be repeated in his own greeting. She had too much pep in her step. He didn’t like it. And the staring was strange. Not unsettling, but strange.

The second arrival showed up only seconds after the first, again not a blue. Interesting. This one, however, was a complete different turn in demeanor. The difference between Brooklyn and Norah was that Brooklyn was fairly easy to tolerate, whilst Norah took much more patience. Either way, the Slytherin was appreciated.

”Miss Andrews,” he nodded in response. It would be nice to have a class full of Brooklyn-types, however, he knew better than to get his hopes up. This was Hogwarts.

The first arrival from the blue house, it seemed. The only color they were missing was red.

...And this is exactly why he didn’t get his hopes up.

The permanent smug expression he wore on his face didn’t falter as she grumpily greeted him. However, he did raise his brows ever-so-slightly. He almost preferred Peppy Prefect over there. ”Watch your tongue, Denaker. That’s three points from Ravenclaw.” Additionally, he did not care at all to figure out what she was referring to. Oh and she was automatically starting at strike two.

And a red. The had finished the set now, yeah?

James was almost pleased to see participation across all the houses, however the snide comment from this one took away any sign of pleasantness from his face. "It is lovely," he nodded with absolutely no hint of sarcasm. James loved this kind of weather. Though lovely wasn't a word that often graced his tongue. However, "Watch your tone, Miss Burton. Two points," which he was obviously taking away, not rewarding.

Ah, this next arrival was one all too familiar to James. The Head Child had arrived. James wore an extra warm smile just for him. So that he didn't tap into breaking that sensitive heart again. How thoughtful. James ought to get an award for this. "Hello Yoongi," he watched curiously as the Gryffindor made his way to sit over with ah. Did the badges collect together? Is that how it worked these days?

And yes, he noticed the frustration on the boys face. It was amusing.

Little Katherine Moss, always prepared. James had been keeping a close eye on this one ever since her little office visit. A child afraid of dogs wasn't one well fit for Care of Magical Creatures. However, she proved to have a lot of resilience and she earned respect for that.

He gave her a small nod, watching as she went to choose her seat. Careful in even seat selection. This little girl was of a complete different variety.

.... No comment.

This one got a nod. He was interesting, James had to give him that much.

The beauty of switching up the lesson venue was getting to see the bright red faces of those who hadn't prepared by checking the noticeboards. It was also a great way of teaching them a lesson. Sometimes it takes running to class one time in order to stress the importance of preparation.

"Good morning, Mr. Leonard," he gave the boy the smallest-hint-of-a-smile. Despite the slightly red face, the enthusiasm from this one was appreciated. He was starting to think he'd have a full class of drama queens by the time everyone had arrived. These rare yellow-house kids were nice to have in small doses.

Despite having learned most names by now, James didn't much more about most of his students. Aside from how terrible they were at , that is. However, there were the select few that had made an effort to visit during office hours.

Which is how he knew the next arrival. "Miss Lynch," he let a small smile slip as she walked by. She was one of the good ones. Always prepared. Never complained. Always willing.

Perhaps they were on a lucky streak here? Hopefully this continued because there needed to be an offset with the amount of younger students they had. The older ones tended to be much more respectful. Which is why he appreciated Zeke Browne. Kid was respectful as long as he was respected back. More of them ought to take a page out of Zeke's book.

"Good Morning, Mr. Browne," he nodded.

James much preferred Tia over her counterpart. She was much less dramatic. "Morning," he nodded in return, noting that she chose to sit by a younger student. Yes, definitely liked her more than the Hyland kid.

... Merlin, drama queens. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.

He gave her a look before nodding, "Good morning, Rachel," and watched as she went to take a seat. He did hear her response to Ms. Denaker and despite being right, if the other Ravenclaw wanted to assume it had been done intentionally... Then James wasn't about to clear the air. Let her think it was intentional. It was more amusing that way.

A non-angsty Ravenclaw was refreshing. Which is exactly why he liked this one. Giving her a slight nod as she made her way over, he watched as she made her way to a spot on the bench. He liked the quiet ones.

.... Oh Merlin.

They had a crier already and James hadn't even said anything to her yet. Great. "Good morning," he paused, watching her curiously. If she cried it wasn't his fault... Yet.

This one was a dwarf. But a respectful dwarf. A respectful dwarf who preferred to greet people in foreign languages, it seemed. There wasn't really a problem with that. He was sure Nana did it too in her head.

James nodded at the boy, "Nice scarf," hopefully it wasn't on too tight, yeah?

Ah, another one who looked like he had just rolled out of bed. James was wondering how many of those he'd get. "Good morning, Austin," he replied the greeting in a strong voice to contrast with the kid's own mumbling. "If you think you'll fall asleep, I suggest jogging in place." Falling asleep would not be tolerated. Fyi.

This one was fast. "Good morning," he watched as she waved to pratically every single kid on the bench. Didn't these kids have any enemies? Were was the fun in being friends with everyone?

The hiking up of scarves was highly unnecessary in James' opinion, but he decided to refrain from commenting on it. Maybe it was a new trend, though James thought it was nothing but a dramatic display. The muffled greeting was... interesting and the boy received a firm nod in return.

Huh, what had he done to make her so happy? "Good morning, Ms. Valke," he nodded. The green house was very impressive today.

Ah, yellow. They were good in moderation and for now it seemed there weren't an overwhelming amount of them. So this one could stay. He'd allow for it.

Though her lack of a greeting didn't go unnoticed.

This one was in a hurry. He had to keep himself from showing any signs of amusement, however, the smug smile stayed in place as always. He gave the little girl a small nod in acknowledgment and watched as she went to sit down.

..... Right.

She got a nod. And a heap of silent judgement.

Another yellow, joy. They weren't overcapacity yet, were they? He'd have to count. For now, she could stay as well.... He supposed.

"Hello and good morning," he nodded firmly.

Miss 500 Miles Per Hour. Not a surprise to see her skipping her way over. He had to brace himself. "It is indeed," he nodded in agreement. Her attitude was appreciated, at least.

Ah another blue. There seemed to be an arsenal of those lately. Hopefully this one would be angst free, yeah? A man could only hope. "Good morning," he nodded. Almost time, yeah?

They were getting down to the last few minutes here and James was already growing impatient. He wanted to get things moving already. "Hugo," he nodded. "Just about ready to start." That's what's up.

Another one who looked like he was on the brink of hibernation. Didn't these kids sleep? 9 am was hardly even early. Seeing as the Slytherin wasn't up for a voiced greeting, James wouldn't return with one either. Simply a nod.

Glancing down at his watch, he waited until the last few seconds ticked by. Right when the small hand hit the nine, he walked over so that he was now directly in front of the benches, leaving the table with empty jars behind. Not waiting another minute--as he wanted them to have as much time as they could for the lesson--he addressed the class as a whole. "Good morning, I hope everyone is wide awake today." Looking at you, Mr. Moore.

"As you can tell, it's slightly chilly out," yes, he said slightly. No need to be dramatic, people. It wasn't snowing, the lake wasn't frozen, and there was a bit of sun peeking through. It could've been worse. And they ought to know to wear layers. However, "If you have a problem with the cold, feel free to cast or ask an older student to help you cast an insulating charm on your clothes. A hot-air charm and jogging in place will also do the trick, so I don't want to hear any complaints."

He paused briefly to allow them to do any of the above. He was curious to see if any would opt for jogging. It was the easiest fix, James' personal favorite. It'd wake them up as well. Work twice the magic without using any magic at all. A good skill to have.

"We're going to start off nice and easy. I expect everyone to participate." Meaning he didn't want anyone trying to take a nap. That wouldn't be happening on his watch. "As you have hopefully noticed by now," he used the world 'hopefully' because there was always one unobservant kid in the bunch. Though surprisingly, they were normally the ones that buried their heads in textbooks all year. "There are many different species local to Hogwarts grounds. I want everyone to think of and name at least one creature you can encounter around these parts."

See? Not hard. It wasn't an answer they needed to look in the textbook for either. James didn't care much for textbooks. This class was all about experience. That's how he fell in love with the subject, anyways. Besides, they had to have exposed to some Hogwarts' creatures before, yes?

As he waited for hands to start shooting up, he pulled the chalkboard closer so that he could begin taking note of answers.

OOC: Eeeee first of all, thank you all so much for joining in! I'm so giddy right now asdf <3

+ Anyways, as Professor Draper just announced this is the OFFICIAL START of the lesson! So we'd advise you not to post any arrivals after this point! Just pretend you've been around the whole time, we won't know the difference

+ We won't move on for at least another 12 hours
Madge was fairly excited to begin learning about magical creatures. but she was at a true disadvantage, not knowing anything about the magical world until about six months prior to this moment. She thought hard about her time spent here. Creatures at Hogwarts? She then thought of the kitchens by the Hufflepuff Common Room entrance, and her hand shot up.

"Well, we have house elves in the kitchens." she offered, she wanted to participate even if she didn't know much beyond her experience in the past few months.

Creatures, from around Hogwarts, this was so easily done... but he didn't want to give a boring answer either, like, some of them were a little cliche, no?

"Kneazles, Sir... the dreaded kneazles." Like, they were everywhere and nowhere and in places where you least expected them to be... like in a library, on chairs where people sat. Nasty things they could be. Gosh. Domestic or not, some were just plain feral... others weren't too bad, but he was more of a canine person if anything.

Ouh Great in a sarcastic tone of course

he raised his hand, wait till pointed out and answering it with a lazy but yet sassy as he usually done

"How 'bout paused "a Skrewt sir? i meet up with them in the Wooden Bridge, you know the story sir" he smile not a sincere one but a bitter one, it seem he still hold a grudge over it.. very revengefull kid is he?

"Or how about we try something soft and cherish like.. a house elves maybe??" he shuddering his shoulder and smiled, this time looks like a mockery.. Geez.. looking for trouble eh? please don't

Perhaps the cold and still sleepy as hell made Raven bit more annoying.. he stayed up late because reading Horror's Novel, lend by a friend.. he did wear few layer and tighten up his scarf but yet still feel the cold.. or maybe he's a bit unwell makes him can't stand the cold, he loves gloomy weather like this but the cold makes him so grumpy

did the other kid feel the cold too? but they seem okay with it.. he looks around.. aaand finds most of them are as cold as he is..

"Very good," he nodded, flicking his wand behind him towards the piece of chalk that rested on the ledge of the board. "They pull your carriages every year despite appearing invisible to most." So in other words, yes they have all encountered them before even unknowingly. Aside from the first years, that is. They'd get their time too.

The chalk quickly took note of the answer as James moved on to call on the next student.

James was glad to see this one was still awake. Though it was still early in the lesson. Kid was on his Professor's radar now. "Excellent!" he said, turning to make sure the chalk was still taking note, it was of course.

Did he have to explain further. Only an idiot would not know about them and trying to their language sounds exhausting.
Ah Dante, this one was always something else. James expected interesting answers from this kid, always. However, the answer offered up this time was quite normal. A little boring. But correct, for the most part. "Merpeople in the lake, yes," he nodded as the words were written on the board. For the most part... But there was one thing, "However, be careful with the fine wording there Mr. Barrington," he slightly raised his brows, wondering if the boy had caught on to his own mistake yet.

"Although you may be inclined to label the Merpeople as beings," he was addressing the entire class here, by the way. "They declined the offer for that particular classification. Therefore, they are classified under the 'beast' category along with Centaurs who had also declined the offer." And now they knew.

Eager she was. Wasn't this the child who had almost cried because of words James didn't even say? Well, thank Merlin that was over. Whatever that was, anyways. He didn't need any more angsty Claws. It seemed that Haddie child already had them covered on that front.

"Yes," he nodded. Her answer was correct. It was also correct when the sleepy boy had said it only a few moments ago. "Pay attention to your classmates' answers," his tone wasn't harsh, just a gentle reminder. Or... As gentle of a reminder as James could get at. The Professor wasn't all that gentle, alright? Only when it came to the creatures. And children were an entirely different category of beasts. Especially Ravenclaws.

"Grindylows sir," the female snakette answered only after raising her hand, hazel eyes flicking towards the lake for a brief second.
Slightly annoyed for some of the students' blatant disregard for repeated answers, James was glad to see Hady's hand in the air. She wouldn't disappoint, he was sure. "Good," he nodded. Glad to see some were paying attention.

He would of course help out any younger students with performing the hot air charm on them if they asked him. His eyes went to Katherine next to him for a second before thinking of an answer to the Jerkface’s question. “Acromantulas” he said after raising his hand in the air. It was the first creature that popped in to his mind.
Professor Jerkface next looked over to the Head Child. This ought to be interesting. He nodded at the dramatic boy, thoroughly interested to see what he had to offer up. "Gave you lot quite some trouble a few terms back, yeah?" He nodded as the answer was noted on the board.

If not that... he tilted his head thoughtfully.

"Do centaurs count? They're in the forest, right?" But centaurs were weird, cause they were... sorta creatures but not really creatures. They talked and stuff. Had conversations. They were like humans, except not.
James shook his head, "You can name mundane ones as well," he nodded. After all, he hadn't specified. With that being said, both of the answers were good ones and he let the chalk scribble both down. "Both acceptable answers, Mr. Song," though the anecdote wasn't very interesting.

Now the class had started, Ava went back to her seat and listened to the cold heartless creature man. "There are centaurs living in the forbidden forest." The young lioness said. "Last term it taught them how to be a centaur it it was quiet... interesting. The class, I mean." Cue sarcastic comment.
Little Burton was wise to keep her mouth shut after losing points previously. And she was also the first he noticed to stand up and begin jogging. Good. Meant she was done complaining, yeah?

"Yes, much like Mr. Song just informed us," was he being too direct? Did he care? No. They ought to listen to their peers. Maybe learn a few things.

While the others answered his question she pulled her small hand mirror out and examined herself to make certain that her scarf hadn't messed up her Gothic complexion or hair. Her hair was a little messed up, but thankfully the pale make up hadn't been smeared. Satisfied, she snapped the mirror shut and refocused on the lesson.
.... Another repeated answer. Merlin, these children were testing his patience already and it was only minute eight. Yes. He nodded. 'Thestrals' were still a correct answer. Hadn't changed since the first time it was said.

"We do not pamper ourselves in the middle of class, Miss Valentine," yes he had seen that. He was standing right there in front of them after all. He wasn't blind. "Save that for after the lesson," he warned her firmly. She could touch up her facepaint when they were released.

Is it true?" she asked, raising her hand before speaking "oh, I also believe Grindylows habit the Great Lake Sir" Yes, that was a proper answer.
Avid note-takers, they were appreciated for the most part. He gave her an amused look as she spoke up to answer. Basilsk, that was a new one. "There was one in the castle at one point in time, but we no longer have one residing here." Murder was a heavy subject to discuss with so many tiny dwarf-children around. "You may, however, find snakes deep in the forrest." Eh, at least she had tried?

More than he could say for some of them. And for that reason, he'd let her second answer slide. Another repeat. Maybe they should end the lesson here and turn it into one on respect? Merlin knew they needed it.

There were MANY creatures that lived in the forest. "Unicorns, sir. In the Forest, there's been known to be Unicorns that take residence there." Tia said upon raising her hand. Not that she's ever been in the Forest personally to see one, sadly.
The Head Girl, James expected great things. Mostly because her counterpart would always fall short of expectations and she'd have to pull the weight. But also because she hadn't done anything to make him expect otherwise.... Yet. There was always a yet with these kids.

As for her answer, James appreciated the variety she offered with hers. "Unicorns, yes," he nodded in confirmation. "Native to many forests in Europe, including our own."

She wasn't even cold. THANKS, PROFESSOR! Still steadily jogging in place and feeling like a hamster at the wheel, Ariadne began thinking of a creature she could find here at Hogwarts. "Merpeople!" she excitedly said, pausing for a split second to raise her hand. Those things were SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS scary!
Another jogger, it seemed. And another answer repeater as well. James was growing very annoyed, very quickly. He simply gave the girl a nod. Before moving on to the next student.

Noelle jotted down the answers other students were given. Then she raised her had while still writing. "I heard nifflers were in the barn." Did that count?
"You heard correctly," he nodded. He had heard about this one. She had quite the eventful term, hadn't she? "Welcome back," and that's as warm as he'd get. Though he did genuinely hope she was readjusting well. And that she had learned her lesson. Utter stupidity it took to get kidnapped in Knockturn Alley, there wasn't much sympathy there.

He raised his hand and when he was called, answered, "I heard there are Fairies here." Though he had not encountered one before. Were they as cute as they were imagined in the Muggle World?

And Tia mentioned Unicorns. He already liked her a lot.
Again with the hearing. Where were the kids hearing these things and why didn't they just go take a look for themselves? He nodded, "There are a few domesticated ones in our barn." Belonging to students from a lesson a few terms back. At least that's what his records read.

Besides the practical part of the lesson should help since it would require them to get up and move about.

For now she was happy talking about creatures since she were incredibly interested in them.

When they were asked to list a creature that they could find around the school grounds it was no surprise that one in particular occurred to her right off the bat. "Unicorns!" she called out excitedly as soon as her hand was in the air. If they ended up doing another lesson on them, Esme would be REALLY happy.
Her excitement was noted and so was the answer: Previously. He gave her a short nod before turning his attention to the next student. James had decided that these kids had zero attention span.

"Or what?" Haddie asked. "You'll leave me a frozen statue for the Hag to pick off at her leisure? Oh, wait. You did that already." No one ever accused Haddie of being smart. Well, the Sorting Hat did, but the Sorting Hat was, in fact, a magical moron, so...

"Mermaids." Her voice was dripping even more with loathing and snark, even though she was legitimately participating. "Or the Hag in the woods." Well, semi-legitimately.
James just about had it with this particular child. "Another three points, Denaker," clearly points meant nothing to her at this point, but her other classmates would give her a hard time about it. He was sure. If he remembered one thing from his Hogwarts years it was that most students did care. "You have said quite enough. We can discuss the rest after class," he was not happy. "Or in detention if you would prefer." Yes, that was a warning. She was on thin ice.

Ah, Backpack Boy Wonder. What. A. Joy.

James gave him a tight-lipped-smile. A smile that translated anything but happy. Kid thought he was oh-so-funny now, didn't he?

A tight-lipped smile and nothing else. Because as a Professor it'd be hardly frowned upon to reply with sarcasm. His permanent smug look twitched slightly, and after a small pause he continued, "Interesting observation."

That's all.

"... Correct," technically, yes. But it was a strange answer. And why she was so enthusiastic about it was beyond him. But he was done trying to understand the mind of a 13 year-old child. Best left alone. He moved his wand so that the chalk scribbled her answer down on the board as well.

"Bowtruckles, sir, and they'll scratch out your eyes if you get too close to their wand trees." And Dot liked her eyes, thanks. They were helpful for seeing.
"Excellent, Miss Wojack, he said as the chalk took note. "And they are indeed very protective of their trees." Now if the others could pay attention here. Maybe they would get more original answers such as Dot's. Yes, the badge was a good fit for this one. Not an easy feat, by the way.

"Hippogriffs," he nodded as her answer was written on the board. "Very good," among other creatures found in the barn. They had quite a few of them.

But all this warm excitable blood rushing to his head suddenly got a thought percolating in the back burner of his brain to suddenly come front and center "Professah... Are there any hogs around Hogwarts? I mean its in the school name and we have them boars by the gate, but I don’t think I've actually ever seen one." huff huff huff "Or do we actually keep them in a pen somewhere and that’s what we cook for dinner?"

..... James had said jog in place, yes? Not bounce-like-an-uncontrollable-pogo-stick in place, that was far too many syllables. He watched in amusement as the kid bobbed up and down. There wasn't a problem with it as long as he could manage to do that and pay attention all at the same time.

"You may be able to find wild boar in this region of the country," he considered the question. Despite being posed off a silly thought, it was still a good question. Something that was a rarity among this generation. "Though I can't say that any of their species lives around Hogwarts." He hadn't ever encountered one here either. As for the comment about their dinner, no comment.

He'd let the kid figure that one out on his own.

James owed her points for getting creative, yes. So he nodded, encouraging her answer. "Sometimes to Professor Myer's dismay, yes, they can infest the gardens," he flicked his wand, letting the chalk take note of this answer. "Though they aren't normally permanent residents here." So it wasn't completely right. But it was plausible. And creative. And not repetition. So good.

He expected more from a Prefect. This one fell into the same category as the Head Child over there. Repeated answers would end this lesson much sooner than expected if this continued. He had no patience for it.

Sometimes James had half the mind to think these children just liked hearing the sound of their own voice. "Not at Hogwarts, no." And seeing as that was the question posed, they weren't going to deviate and talk about other possibilities.

Yes, James remembered this one very well. Which is why he waited to call on the boy last. Hopefully he had something constructive to add. A hope which he was sure would only be that. "Skrewts, yes, you know all too well," he nodded adding the answer to their running list. However the last bit about the elves, he wouldn't comment. They were already mentioned. TWICE.

Moving to the side, James gave everyone a second to look over the list they come up with for the chalkboard.

"As you can see, we have quite a lot of creatures living along side us at Hogwarts," and if they couldn't see then they ought to invest in glasses. An easy fix, really. Or they could move up closer to the front. James didn't bite most of the time. "We also have many different habitat possibilities." As he had so kindly organized for them. "If you haven't already pieced it together, Merlin so help them if they haven't, "Today we'll be focusing on creatures of the lake and more specifically, Flying Seahorses as Mr. Reed pointed out."

So yes, he hadn't just dragged them to the lake because he was a sadist. Though that was also a good guess. No. He had reason. "Before we go into more specifics, I would like everyone to take a moment to brainstorm characteristics, needs, and behaviors that lake-residing creatures tend to share." Not everyone all at once. Oh and important, "Pay attention to what your peers say." No more repetition, he had almost enough of it.

OOC: Sorry that took so long! And I really hope I got everyone in there!! I'm still trying to get the hang of this! I'm going to try my best to get my next post up in at least 13 hours from the time of this post.

Feel free to have your characters get creative for this answer! James doesn't have anything specific in mind. Though we'd encourage you to only to give one answer so that others have an opportunity as well!

"Fine." Haddie said sourly. She was about to say more when she caught the look from Rachel out of the corner of her eye. She closed her mouth. "Whatever."

What characteristics did the creatures that live in the lake need? Gee, let us think. "Gills... the ability to breathe underwater." There, she's participated, without snark. Was everyone happy? Why Hogwarts hire teachers that didn't even like children in the first place, Haddie would never know.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Rachel watched with interest as the chalk wrote down their answers into categories. What was the spell that bewitched it to do this? She needed to find out and decided she would ask Professor Primeaux sometime soon. For now, she returned her attention back to Professor Draper as he made mention of the creature they would be studying.

The Eagle raised her hand. "They need to have a clean source of water since this is where they get their oxygen and swim around in. A dirty lake would hamper these and could harm the creatures.'' The poor creatures. This was why no one should throw harmful materials into the Lake or any body of water where they lived.

What the.......

She didn't MEAN to repeat that Slytherin boy. Perhaps he was talking in low voice so she couldn't hear it? That man reminded her of her old muggle school teacher. So grumpy. How could this man be a teacher for teen-age students? Because it seemed like he didn't like teenagers.

Whatever.

And now they're gonna talk about the flying seahorse. Hmmm....

Ava tried to participate again by answering this d-bag professor. "I think they all have fins to help them swim." She spoke loudly as she raised her hand so NOBODY could repeat her answer. Listen to that, Drape?

Elsa was satisfied-ish with the acceptance of her answer. She would have to do better now. She took her time thinking her answer through, she even drew a Flying Seahorse, or what she hoped one looked like, and did a diagram of the characteristics she knew this animal had.

After having everything organized in her head she raised her hand, leaning forward in her bench with anticipation "Flying Seahorses are capable of flying when provoked, I suppose that means they're hybrid creatures, able to breath in the water as well as outside of it" she declared. That seemed like an obvious characteristic to her, so she continued "which also means their gills have to work as wings outside the water. Being able to fly distinguish them from other sorts of Seahorses since for that they had to develop vertebral columns to provide strength to pull theirs bodies from the water and fly" yep, most fishes' spines were soft and bendable. That was a proper answer. She knew her love for animals would pay-off sometime.

Default I'm so dumb! I didn't even see Austins answer! Sorry!
Snow Miser | Munchy | Molly Hooper | T | Hey, you | Phantom | Mrs. Chris Evans | Brat Pack | Tristalen

Azura shrank back ever so slightly as the professor responded to her. She had been so distracted with her thoughts that she hadn't even noticed Austin had said the exact same thing..

Minus ten points for Azura!!

She listened carefully and made sure no one was going to say what she was going to!

Again her hand went into the air, slower this time because well.. Embarrassed Ravenclaw Party of one.,

But she spoke up!

"They are all fresh water creatures aren't they? So they need fresh water and not salt water to survive."

Please oh please let no one have said that!

Her answer hadn't gotten more then a one word reply but that didn't mean much to the fifth year. She had given an answer and a decent one which was correct so that's all she currently cared about. As the lesson slowly progressed Hady's gaze shifted to the board where the creatures they had all listed soon appeared along with where they were located. Easy enough to understand.

And so it seemed they would be talking about Flying Seahorses. Well okay then. As some answers were already being given she once more raised her hand, "Most of them would be classified as 'Beasts'." Or well at least three out of the five would be that she knew of for sure.

Austin, who was really more focused on his tea than anything else, waited a few minutes before responding. He had seen a few of the seahorses from time to time, but he never got close to them. They could swim and fly, but those you could get from their name. If he was going to answer, he needed to come up with something else.

The teen took another sip of his tea as he thought. He remembered reading about something in his potions books. They were actually used as ingredients, although the manner in which their preserved was beyond him. He was always given them, or bought them in Diagon Alley. He never needed to go and get them himself.

After a few minutes he raised his hand. "They're actually used in potion making. Commonly known for the potion that gives you endurance." He wasn't going to say Girding Potion, although that was the proper name for it. It was probable that most people didn't know it by the name. He looked down at the warm cup in his hands, hoping to hide the fact that he read potions books in his free time.

Hold on to what? Jace blinked several times when the professor winked at him...and gave him the faintest grin he could muster. The poor Ravenclaw has no idea what to make of it. One moment he's scary...the next minute he's being appreciative? It was safe to say that Jace was clueless, and he thought it wise not to make sense of it.

...

Oh...oh, so deduction was right! There ought to be an explanation why they are out near the Lake, freezing their buttocks off. However...will they actually go and fish? And...and...and does this mean that they will be harvesting the flying seahorses for their Potions class? Lol, Potions though. If the subject isn't mandatory, he'd rather not take it after being poisoned. But even if he was given the chance not to take it, his mother will freak out.

Anyway, back to the lesson. Jace did shrink back in his scarf like an awkward turtle as his answer was acknowledged, and then tried to think of a common behaviour amongst Lake dwellers. Again, he raised his gloved hand and offered his answer, "I think most of them are harmless whenever they are in their element, as well as co-existing with their fellow water creatures. They become restless by activating their defense mechanism when someone or something intrudes their habitat, making them dangerous creatures if provoked..." he trailed off, his eyes casting a wary glance at the too still Lake surface. Jace has a hunch that that peace will soon be disturbed.

"Glad to see some of you are already thinking ahead," he nodded in response to the answers already offered. "For the moment, let's talk about lake-dwelling creatures in general." As some of them already had. "And after we get more ideas flowing, we can move into today's subject."

OOC: Sorry for not making this as clear before! For this second question, we're just taking about lake creatures in general to help for brainstorming purposes for the next question!

If you've already posted about the seahorses, no worries! That was totally my fault. Sorry again for the confusion!

Well, if Professor Draper wanted to be his usual grumpy pants self that wasn't Esme's problem. So far he hadn't said anything to HER but he had reminded someone else not to repeat answers. Was it so bad that some people - like her - mentioned something said by another classmate? People got enthusiastic about creatures that they liked.

The topic changed its focus to lake dwelling creatures and she had quite a bit to say on the matter but it seemed that some of her classmates had jumped to it before she could. Since it seemed that no one could think along the same lines as any of their classmates maybe she should stay silent on the matter.

However... something DID come to her mind. She raised her hand anyway. "I think that a lot of them live in communities among themselves. I know that the merpeople have underground cities or something..."

So today was going to be about lake creatures. Flying Seahorses particularly? Hmm, maybe this would be interesting. She listened closely to the gr- professors question. Easy enough. " Flying Seahorses are generally a golden yellow in color with solid black eyes. The males tend to be slightly larger than the females because, like their Mundane counterparts, the males carry the offspring. They are gregarious and take different mates every breeding season. The integrity of the plant life in their habitat is essential to their survival as it is with all members of the seahorse family. The plants are nearly as important to their survival as the water itself. " She probably could have given him an essay right then and there but she'd leave things for other students to mention so that perhaps they didn't get scolded for repetition.
