Though your early morning class is normally held right outside of the barn, Professor Draper has decided to switch it up for the day. Following the instructions on your house noticeboard, you make it down to the lake for your first class of the morning. Luckily your Professor was feeling merciful and left a sign by the usual meeting place for those who failed to check the announcements. However, if that applies to you, you better be running to class. James doesn't tolerate tardiness.
The crisp late-January air greets you as you make your way towards a row of benches that sit a good distance from the lake. The grass is sporting a fresh layer of cold dew, however, the lake looks peaceful and undisturbed. Hopefully you wore layers, it’s a little chilly out.
Your seat on the bench faces both the lake and a portable chalkboard that Professor Draper rolled out for the lesson. And speaking of your Professor, he can be found standing in front of a large table off to the side. He stands there not only to greet you as you come forward to find your seat, but also to make sure that you don’t touch any of the empty glass jars on the table, those are for later.
Please pick a spot on the bench, class will begin promptly at 9:00 am!
OOC: Hi I’m BEYOND excited and incredibly nervous for our first official CoMC lesson together! However, please note that this should NOT be your character’s first lesson of the term! By this point in the year they should’ve already attended several lessons and will at least know some very basics about the subject!
Please remember all SS Rules and Classroom Rules apply. I have ways of knowing who didn't read them!
+ I will post in approximately 13-16 hours to start the lesson. Please get comfortable in the meantime, but try to keep excess chatter at a minimum ^^

After filling up the jar with cool water, Kitty went to try to find a spot to fish for seahorses. She wandered away from the rest of the class and sat down on the grass.
"Carpe Retractum!" Kitty shouted excitedly and flicked her wand back and forth. A golden thread flashed out over the water. It flickered and fell to water, vanishing as it hit the water.
Okay no problem. She would try it again. "Carpe Retactrum!"
Ilia ignored Haddie's performance and simply disrespectfully rolled her eyes at the ickle child. As if she was going to buy that routine. No, Ilia didn't believe her a bit. It really wasn't anything to do with her acting, she didn't necessarily seem like she was acting. Maybe it was ,in fact, a mistake. Ilia simply didn't trust the child and therefore did not believe her. She saw the eaglet's actions at the feast, beginning of the term. Oh no, this child liked to be trouble. The thing is....you don't poke a snake and expect not to get bit. It may be a delayed reaction, but Ilia was not so simply dismissing or forgiving the child. Rachel got a look of disdain, as if to say she expected something better of her. To think, she was going to try and be nice to the child for Henric's sake.....

Ignoring the brats, she decided to get to work. At least Henric was by her side. Quietly she filled her jar with "Aguamenti" being careful not to spill anything. Half way full was sufficient, she could always fill more later. If it wasn't chilly she might have splashed Henric accidentally on purpose.....but he didn't tolerate the cold as well as she did, so she thought better of it. Smiling at him, she carried her jar a little closer to the water. Fishing time she supposed.

Why was the ground so hard? She groaned softly as she collided with the shore, thankfully, she didn't land on her face, she had sort of fallen over to the side a bit.. and landed on her side..
She winced as Elsa helped her up and then she turned to look at Jace! who had also gotten attacked by the seaweed ball!
It was her first instinct to rush over and help him out, but Elsa had gotten there first! She sighed softly as she brushed her hand over her face, smudging the seaweed mark even more. "Thanks Elsa." She said with a warm smile, "And it's all right." She was fine, Jace was fine.. everyone was fine right? Except for the fact that Jace wasn't REALLY talking to her.. and she still hadn't managed to cast a spell yet.
"Are you all right?" She asked Jace, being smothered by seaweed couldn't have been to fun. She then turned back to the lake and attempted her spell again! "Carpe Retractum! This time the golden light flicked out across the lake and Azura had caught something!!
A flying seahorse??
She tugged more on her wand, it didn't seem to want to come to her!!
She gave one last final tug before a smallrock with strings of seaweed hanging from it came flying at her!! EEEKKKKK!!!!
Thankfully she turned her face just in time for it to miss her nose and hit her cheek and then fall to the ground..
OWWWW..
This was not her day.

"Carpe Retractum!" Kitty tried again, snapping her wand back and forth as she had done last time. This time she didn't let go until after the golden thread had vanished below the water and was starting to come up. "I got something!" A giant fish about the size of her head flew out of the lake and landed a few inches from her feet.
"EEK!" Kitty jumped backwards in surprise as it flapped around in the ground in front of her. Thankfully they were so close to the water that the fish was able to splash back inside and swim safely to deeper water.

With a watery home ready for whatever flying seahorses she managed to catch, Olivia knew it was time to get to work on trying to catch them. However she was a tad apprehensive on doing do. What with it involving a whole new spell that she had no experience with and having just flubbed up a spell she had been using all term. Was it just going to be screwy that one or rather two times, or was it an example of her temperamental wand acting up?
Could she chance the spell?
She didn’t want to hurt the creatures if something happened with her spells. The Ravenclaw glanced in the direction of the professor as she debated saying something or asking for help. But then Olivia thought the better of it. She had to master the spell…and her wand…on her own. Just needed the confidence to do so. The first year finally decided to take a few minutes to watch the others work to see what they were doing, especially the older students. Maybe then, she’d have some tips and tricks on what to do and what not to do.

Ariadne had big plans for this lesson. BIG.
She was going to reel in a TON of flying seahorses and have LOADS of potions ingredients, just like her mom would do! Nevermind the fact that she was just a first year. Nevermind the fact that this was her very first time using the charm and her very first time going flying seahorse fishing. This was just going to miraculously work out for her.
SHE JUST KNEW IT.
She hung on to every word of the instructions, nodding along at all the key parts. First, she had to get a jar. GOT IT! She fidgeted a little in anticipation of ALLLLL the flying seahorses she'd catch, and then when it time to get started, she headed straight for the jars. Ariadne collected one then claimed herself a work area. THIS is where she would get ALLLL the flying seahorses!
Now she supposed it was time to actually catch something. Well, try half heartedly to fish out something. Really she didn't want to catch the little creatures. She knew that they were used in potions and such, she knew that many animals were yes. Still, she had no inclination to condemn these little guys to that fate. Who was she to pluck them out of their little life for that? No, it was the professor's call, not her own sadly. There was supposedly an overpopulation, maybe there was, but she would prefer to relocate them. She knew that the professor was a creatures person and wouldn't allow them to be treated cruelly but....well she didn't have to be successful but she had to play and try.
Ilia crouched by the lake and began to look and see what she could find. As she sat, she cast a reflective protection charm upon herself. She didn't trust nasty eaglet brats while she sat so close to the water's edge.

Ariadne was in such a hurry to get ALLLLL her flying seahorses that she forgot all about filling her jar with water. She had almost starting casting the charm, when she remembered that she didn't do this. OOPS. Sorry, ickle flying seahorses! Was she supposed to just run to the lake and fill the jar up with water? Where was this water supposed to come from?!
...oh, right. She was a WITCH. She had this little thing called a WAND.
Duh, Ariadne.
She flicked her wand out her holster and aimed it into the jar. "Aguamenti!" she said, waving her wand in a sideways S shape. She watched the water as it began to fill the jar. When it was almost to the rim, she flicked her wand and said, "Finite!" The water stopped coming out her wand, and she was left with a filled jar just READY for loads of flying seahorses.
Henric raised his wand and began casting the spell easily into the water. Would he want to catch them? The answer was no. He rather watched them frolicking about in their natural environment. Hmm? Those little flying seahorses didn't know what was coming at them. He sat beside llia and pretending to look engrossed catching them. How long did he have to be here? Shouldn't there be a bait or something? "llia, did you manage to catch one?" he asked.

Enlarged jar. Check. Water. Check. Knowledge of seize and pull charm. Check.
Tia was ready to go in terms of capturing a seahorse, even though she wasn't one hundred percent sure how the charm would work at singling out just seahorses. It wasn't like there was bait that they had which only seahorses were attracted to. What was to stop them from seizing seaweed or garbage or other lake creatures? Absolutely nothing, Tia decided. She did overhear some peers electing to attempt a summoning charm, but there was no guarantee of that working either. Besides if a summoning charm would work, Tia was sure that would have been more efficient.
Still sticking with non-verbal charms, Tia readied herself into adequate fishing position and flicked her wand in a whip-like movement, like she was casting an invisible fishing line into the Great Lake. 'Carpe Retractum!' she thought, all her attention focused on the spell.

She whispered just loud enough for only him to hear. The professor probably wouldn't want to know that, but she figured that Henric would understand her....if anyone did it was him. Henric wasn't really trying either was he? Hmm, her kindred spirit.

Now that she had a jar full of water, Brooklyn had a decision to make. Did she really want to deal with fishing for her own seahorses, or did she want to find someone willing to do it for her? Except, as she’d watched the others who had already begun casting the spell, the former seemed the better decision. At least she could have confidence in her own abilities, since it didn’t seem like there was much reason to be confident in anyone else’s. She highly doubted she could talk Professor Draper into fishing for her. As the professor, she figured he, at least, would be relatively successful.
Approaching the water’s edge, she stood at a safe distance from the water so as not to risk falling in, before she set her jar down by her feet. She wasn’t going to accomplish anything while still holding the jar. Taking her wand out, she took a breath to center herself. “Carpe Retractum,” she cast, flicking her wand toward the lake in the familiar whip-like movement. Now she just had to wait.

Whip, whip, whip. Carl was getting used to the wand movement. He looked up as Professor Draper spoke again. Were they doing the main activity? Yes! He was on the edge of his bench, listening to the instructions. At first, he was not so willing to participate in this activity, but after practicing the Seize and Pull Charm, he decided that the Flying Seahorses would be okay.
As soon as the Professor finished talking, he stood up and raced to the table. He could run outdoors, right? The Hufflepuff grabbed a large jar and very carefully, carried it back to his bench.

Olivia shook her head to quit getting herself distracted. Time to just buck up and try it herself. She repeated the spell over and over silently in her head as she kneeled down by the water’s edge to look within, her jar a short distance away. Needed to find the flying seahorses to be able to try and grab one or more of them. Well a decent number of them to make it all worthwhile for the exercise. Come out come out wherever you are little creatures.

No time like the present. “Carpe Retractum!” she cast whipping her wand in the direction she was seeing them. There was an orangey spark showing some reaction from her wand but not much. Olivia gathered her focus and tried again. “Carpe Retractum!” The orange light returned but only splashed the water not successful in its attempt at grabbing the swimming and flittering flying seahorses beneath the surface.

Ariadne turned toward the water in haste, anxious to get started, but then paused again. Last time she'd done this, she'd forgotten a key step. MAJOR key step. Had she forgotten anything else? Jar? Check! Filled jar? Check! Wand? Check! Flying seahorses? NOPE. She had everything BUT the flying seahorses, which meant she was now ready to go fishing!
AWESOME! This was going to be SUPER COOL!
Jar in one hand and her wand in the other, Ariadne turned completely toward the lake. She very quickly reviewed the incantation and wand movement in her head. Okay, OKAYYY, she had it! All of it! She aimed her wand toward the lake then began the steps.
"Carpe Retractum!" she called out, and she gave her wand a nice whip.
She held her breath as she waited for the flying seahorse to come sailing toward her. COME ON, SEAHORSE!!! The water gave a ripple, and out popped a flying seahorse...only, it wasn't a flying seahorse. SPLAT. Seaweed hit Ariadne in the face and plastered all over her eyes, nose, and mouth.
"EWWWW!" she said, pulling the seaweed off. SeaHORSE, not seaWEED! Merlin, LAKE, get it right! Yes. It was all the lake's fault.
He had to get a seahorse. He had to. The fish flopped around behind him, now on the ground, and Jaemin gave it a disdainful look. Why wasn't it a seahorse?! He very gently nudged it back toward the water with his toe as it flipped and flopped; as soon as it was in deep enough, it disappeared back into the depths, and he sighed. At least it wasn't the pike.
"One more time," he grumbled, holding his wand up and setting himself in his proper stance. He had to get one, he just... had to. He performed the whip movement and called out the spell again. "Carpe Retractum!"
Light string into the water again, and the small boy pulled back on it insistently. There was something attached again... he pulled harder, and it flew to shore. The very small seahorse flopped around, and Jaemin stared at it in surprise for a good long moment when it hit the ground. It was actually a seahorse! It was there!
WAIT. These things flew! Jaemin grabbed the thing up immediately, holding it gently before putting it carefully into his jar. He had gotten one! He put his hands over the top of the jar, just in case it was going to try and escape. He couldn't have that happening. Not until the professor saw that he'd managed to catch one!

Once again a rope of light emitted from her wand before disappearing into the depths of the lake.
This time Esme was trying to be smoother while bringing her find back to the shore but there was only so much a person could do when waving a fake whip. Honestly she felt a little silly. Best to pretend that she was fishing at a lake even though she didn't like the concept of fishing. Whoever thought it was cool to hook innocent fish was a crazy person. People didn't even do it solely for eating half the time. At least hunger was a good excuse for the activity because people DID need to eat in order to survive.
Looking back at her feet was she really surprised to see more seaweed? Not really, no.
Shaking her head slightly Esme picked it up and tossed it back into the water. It would serve the marine life of the lake a lot better than it ever would her.
Maybe all the seahorses were hiding. Good on them.

Once he was back at his seat, he took out his wand. The next step was to fill his jar up with water so that the Flying Seahorses could breathe and live normally. To be honest, he doubted that he would be able to catch any considering how difficult the spell was. However, it was always good to look on the bright side!
That was when he realized that the spell he was about to perform was his favorite one. "Aguamenti!" He said clearly, pointing his wand at the interior of his jar. Water shot out of the tip and stopped when the jar was about three quarters filled. That would be good enough, yeah? After all, the creatures would need oxygen as well.

Esme was relieved that she wasn't bringing up anything else because it would be a rather rude wake up call for any fish. It seemed that at least one person had caught one - not too far off from her she saw a First Year boy gently nudge one back into the water. At least this didn't hurt them like the hooks did.
Almost forgetting where she was, she was suddenly brought back to the present. There was a job for her to do even if she found this whole endeavor rather pointless. Shaking her head slightly, she brought the line out of the water before making a face of disgust. "EWWWW!" Why had there been a SOCK in the water? It was all dirty and wet and smelly. BLEH. Immediately she kicked it back into the lake. She wasn't dealing with dirty clothing. She was also done with this activity.

James was rather amused, watching the kids attempt at the process. Definitely entertained. He especially thought it was funny when they plucked things out such as seaweed… And that one soggy book was also an interesting find. However, he didn’t show any sign of amusement in his face. He remained stoic and focused. But on the inside, he thought this was absolutely hilarious.
He kept a keen eye on all the students, making sure they were following instructions properly. No kid was drowning on his watch. That’s really all he cared about at this rate. He did, however, take his eyes off the children for only a millisecond, too quickly glance down at his watch.
Just as he looked up again... Came the most problematic child of all (Haddie Denaker). Wonderful. Did she want to lose more points? He waited to hear what she had to say this time around. It was always something. ”Excellent,” not incredibly excellent, she had one seahorse. Eh. But honestly, he didn’t want to keep her here any longer than necessary because his headache would most likely double. She could leave. ”Then you’re dismissed.”
Then he turned to address the rest of the class, ”You can pack up and leave once you’ve caught a seahorse, just be sure to label your jar and leave it by the table.” Easy enough, yeah? ”If you haven’t caught anything, keep going! There’s still another fifteen minutes of class left.”
Once their class time was over, they could leave whether or not they had caught anything.

Rachel followed Haddie over to Professor Draper where she allowed her friend to explain to him that they were finished. Oh, excellent! They could leave now that they were done. She got her quill out again to label a piece of parchment with her name, year and House then said goodbye to the seahorse in the jar. She was still rather giggly about Haddie and the incident with the fish earlier though at the same time she was feeling sorry for the said creature.
"Are you ready to go, Haddie?'' Once she had gathered all of her belongings, Rachel smiled in the Professor's direction. "This was a lovely lesson, Professor. Good bye.'' She hoped that next time he would be a little more friendly. Then again, she had hoped that at the end of the last class.

Looking up as the professor had spoken again, Brooklyn’s focus had faltered. Which meant a rude awakening, as instead of a flying seahorse or two answering her call, a bubble of water had flown toward her. That meant a bit of quick thinking, as she ducked and didn’t exactly pay attention to where the water had landed. As long as it wasn’t on her, she didn’t particularly care. It was definitely not the weather to want to get drenched, after all. She preferred not looking like a ginger drowned rat in front of everyone, but then she also appreciated that she hadn’t gotten smacked in the face by seaweed or a fish. She felt the tiniest bit accomplished for that, since if she had to fail, she hadn’t wanted to do it spectacularly. She’d much rather it not be noticed.
As long as the water bubble hadn’t hit anyone, since then she knew it would have been noticed. There was no way it couldn’t have been, but as long as she didn’t react, nobody would know it had been her. It was as good a plan as any, as she got to her feet again and prepared her wand. She wasn’t leaving without a seahorse. At least hypothetically. She didn’t think Tywin or the dragons would appreciate a seahorse companion.

She heard the professor call out the fifteen minute mark and she pretended to actually try harder. "Carpe Retractum!" Ilia made a whip like motion at the water and.............oh, oh crap....she actually got a hold of something! That something wasn't a seahorse thankfully, no...it was dark and inanimate. She couldn't see until it was on the bank really, but it was a deteriorating boot. Eww....that was disgusting......Accidentally, of course, she used the whip-like spell and tossed it backward in Haddie and Rachel's direction..........though not close enough to hit Professor Draper. She didn't want to peg him with something, he didn't do a thing to her really. She didn't expect the boot to hit them either honestly, but it smelled terribly foul and wafting its stench over there was punishment enough probably.
She focused on the water to at least momentarily ignore any reaction from her 'accidental' toss. "Carpe Retractum" She cast again, whipping the water, she stirred up a large chunk of seaweed. Letting, it plop back into the water gently.

Water notwithstanding, Brooklyn wasn’t giving up. She’d chosen to actually attempt this herself, and that meant she was going to end up with something. Determination wasn’t anything she was unfamiliar with, although she knew others at the school probably thought her attention s were on irrelevant things. She just didn’t particularly care about the same things, not when there was power to be had. Proving herself to the professors only gave her that much more power, and as such, she wouldn’t give up. She just also wasn’t planning on getting dirty while doing it.
“Carpe Retractum!,” she cast again, aiming the whip-like motion of her wand toward the lake and preferably a group of seahorses within. The familiar orange glow snaked out and into the water, as if it was a fishing line, and all she had to do was hope that it hit something. She wasn’t going to lose her focus this time.

"You can still catch them sti-..."he paused when she whispered to him the truth. Ahh! He leaned in closer and whispered back,"Me too...shhh...your secret is safe with me llia..." He believed that seahorses were not meant to be out of their homes at all. He sighed. "Carpe Retractum..."he uttered the spell again, casting a small line into the water or...above it...not sure, he didn't really check if he did. He watched llia's line with amusement.
